Well, well, well. Would you look at what the cat dragged in. (it's me, Lou!)

The time is here, and oh man, do I have a lot to say! Ever since this post was posted on my personal tumblr, on the fifth of may, I have been working like a machine on all things OUROBOROS. I had originally planned for this to just be a progress report/ announcement on what I will be working on now that I am free of the shackles of work, but, somehow, I managed to finish all bullet points, and more. So, let's get into it!

First off, the title.  Ouroboros becomes all capitalized OUROBOROS. Idk. It's neat. Next!

Art. Whew. I didn't think I could draw like this anymore- drawing has been more of a struggle than writing has been, forever, always- it was something I really strived to become good at, for a time. And I gave up. Only to pick it up again when I started ouro, and ever since I released that pressure, something just clicked and I have been churning out art like never before. I don't know if this is a fluke, a stroke of luck or if all that hard work I once did slaving away with menial art practice… but I'm grateful nonetheless. (A note on official RO art: I lost my ipad pencil somewhere on the lawn, lmao. I haven't been able to get a new one yet, so there is a slight delay here.) I am hoping that I get to make some commissions too, in the near future. Visit the forum to see some works in progress (amongst them, Yor's RO portrait!)

Onto the hellscape that is coding! I have been growing more proficient with CSS and html with the help of the ones that run so that we can walk; I have studied and researched and tested and tinkered until my eyes crossed, finding my way into this medium with the incredible guidance of the giants of whose shoulders I stand on. I will talk about this in detail on a later date. So I think it's finally time to reveal that yes, I am working on a twine version of ouro. I will develop it in tandem with choicescript; the porting over from one to the other isn't the herculean task I thought it would be.

Why am I doing this? Because I need to have a save system. I am continuing to write the whole alpha draft in choicescript in hopes that CoG will announce the ability to have a native save/checkpoint system, but if that doesn’t happen, I can’t publish this story without one. Unfortunately, I am not willing to code in a savesystem in choicescript myself, because this will be a large game, with far too many variables for that to be sustainable. Trust me, no one is more disappointed by that fact than me. If it comes to the point that twine publishing will be what I do, I will set my sights on writing a smaller game for hosted games.

By the good graces, this was ROUGH to set up. Working with discord bots is akin to wrangling code, and it was well and truly, a war. But with the help of many, it is finally all done and ready for anyone to join and talk to me and others about OUROBOROS and anything else between heaven and earth.

Onto writing:

The best news out of this whole bunch is that I have worked so hard on editing and writing, that in the past month I have all but finished a two chapter update! I have a chunk of about 5-6 thousand words left to write, and I am going to buckle down over the weekend to see it through. I wanted to have it done so badly for today, but I lost three days of writing time last week due to still being weighed down with work. I hope it isn’t too disappointing to have to wait until monday for the demo update! I am going to post a link to an as-I-write updated demo on Patreon and Discord, if you want to see the ugly face of raw wip drafts. Otherwise I will post the demo update here on Monday with a comprehensive post!

And now!  the biggest news is… from now on, I am writing full time!

This is what I have been tossing and turning about every night ever since Easter. It started as a silly idea while talking to some friends and family about how I was looking for a change in career. And then, little by little, that idea whittled down to a plan, carefully carved by my partner and his whispers of a happy future, a finished dream project, and something to be proud of until the day I wither and die. 

Somewhere between then and now, I grasped a tiny sliver of bravery and held on for dear life. 

I quit my job as a teacher, and instead of accepting a cushy office job, I started behaving as if OUROBOROS and writing was my work (for all the moments I could afford). I have researched and tried different methods from week to week, and although I was still tired from work, I felt like I was onto something that could build into a sustainable future. 

I have no doubts that this journey will be bumpy and long, but sometimes all it takes is to take that first step, and do it with determination. It might all crash and burn and fail in a spectacular way, or with a whimper, but then I will know that I have tried. I will know that I gave myself the chance to be who I want to be, work on what means so much to me. 

And that’s it. I think the hardest part of formulating this post (I’ve written about 50 versions of it!) is getting to the point; the kernel of what makes it so special to me. So, in my heart of hearts, what I'm trying to tell you is that I'm gonna give it my all- and while I know the road to having a sustainable career in writing is rough and ever winding, I do know for sure that I am ready for a challenge, to pour my heart and soul into it until the day I rush out of the office screaming IT IS DONE. IT IS DOOOOONE!!!

I had to give a little attempt at a moment with them, a first attempt, and with how much I adore this game and the potential of what this relationship will be like, more might come <3

What, then, of the lauded Herald of Andraste? Her origins are as steeped in folktale as the deeds she wrought during the war. In the wake of the Elder One’s defeat, a thousand and one nobles from all corners of Thedas streamed to the fortress of Skyhold in hope of begging her favor. In the art world, ever a mirror image of our waking reality, the accompanying explosion was predictable; her image took it by storm, and to have such a piece in your collection became the vogue for well-to-do households across Orlais. The three I have arranged herein for the student’s consideration are some of the most sought-after examples.

The first is something of an outlier. Reportedly created by the dreaded Wolf himself, it was unearthed by Inquisition agents upon ransacking the scant possessions he had left behind, concealed in a sheaf of papers in his study. Though the medium is not plaster, the style itself is undeniably reminiscent of the now-famed elven frescoes adorning the walls in Skyhold’s rotunda. See how fondly he has captured the sharp angles of her face, the attention paid in every line. A romantic might fancy it a glimpse or window into another world to which most are not privy - contemplative, lonely, wistful - with spirits whispering in the paint. The background is indistinct - it is her features that the artist sees with utmost certainty and clarity, above all else. Curious that he chose to depict his subject prior to the mysterious vanishment of her elven markings, is it not? The meaning behind this decision is currently debated more hotly in scholarly circles than the exact year of Andraste’s birth.

Of the second, it must be noted that this is a classical masterwork that will withstand ages. Commissioned by an anonymous patron of the arts, it is currently on loan from the University of Orlais to Empress Celene, displayed in the gallery at the Winter Palace. That the painstakingly rendered likeness of an elf is now displayed so in Halamshiral, the ancestral home of their people, is a bittersweet irony lamented by none other than Divine Victoria herself in the days after she ascended the Sunburst Throne. The gilt frame compliments the Herald’s flaxen hair, particularly against the backdrop of the healed sky, but more than that, in her expression can be seen her talent for careful diplomacy. Ines Arancia identified the featured blooms as a rare variant of embrium, which counts itself a member of the orchid family. One would posit that here the artist was drawing a parallel between both the exceptional beauty and healing properties of embrium and those attributes of the Inquisitor herself. Their inclusion is also said to be an allusion to “the nobility of flowers”, a line heard in no less than three of the bard songs that have been composed about the Herald thus far.

The final piece is a portrait that was ordered in the fluid style popular among Antivan nobility. Here, the Herald’s countenance is such that she is both curious and wilful in equal measure. The dominant tones are red and green, hues which hark to her preferred manner of dress. A skilled observer shall doubtless notice a certain hurried quality in the brushstrokes; of the painting’s specifications, I am reliably informed that Lady Josephine Montilyet changed her mind on no less than three occasions during the dialogue process with the artist, wishing as she did to oversee the creation of a work which suitably paid tribute to the Inquisitor. Purportedly the Lady was so pleased with the final result that she parted with an additional full fifth of its worth on top of the price originally agreed (along with an eloquently-penned apology and enclosed box of choice Orlesian frilly cakes). The student might look upon this portrait and be critical of its subsequent feel, which has been described as incomplete. However, in private parlors and drawing rooms across the south, this aspect is held up as reflecting the fact that for the elven woman who shook Thedas, and saved all among us from the sky’s anger, hers is a tale yet unfinished.

You are absolutely delightful and I literally always wanna talk about TWC. 😁

My favorite is honestly really difficult to choose because I love everyone in the series so much, but if I had to choose one, it's probably Nate. I went into the books incredibly blind to everything about them, so, I had very few expectations, and he instantly stole my entire heart.

I have also played both books 5 times each so far! That's a fun coincidence!

I'm definitely about to play them again, too, because I need to romance Adam. Yes, 3 of my 5 playthroughs of each book so far have been romancing Nate. Then I finally got around to Mason, and then Felix. Gotta give Adam some love, too. 😆

I don't have many specifics about my Detective to share, mostly because I haven't decided who the mains I want to focus on are, yet! I make a different one for every playthrough and I need to organize my thoughts about em! 😅

But! The Wayhaven Chronicles sort of woke up my desire to be creative again after it was dormant for a long time, so I'm hoping to be able to at least doodle my Detectives and flesh things out a bit once I stop being mad rusty in the art department. 😆

Asher... Your mind, your heart👀 I can't get enough of your art. It's absolutely incredible. Tell me! How did you start? What was a driving force for you to stick through boring anatomy (or whatever you find boring? Landscapes? Animals? ) what made you stay with it? How do you handle bad art days? Sending you loads of love an many social distancing smooches ❤️ you're an inspiration!

1. How did I start - I started drawing when I was literally like 5 but I started actual digital art in 2011 when I got my first tablet and it was all downhill from there! Fun fact, I’m not super great at traditional art so digital art really opened up my world.

2. How do I stick through it - I have ADHD fhkshdfkjsdf which has ensured I draw obsessively. That’s a semi-serious answer; at least SOME of my dedication has probably been hyperfixation.

Other than that—I practice. That’s really the key and what I say to everyone who asks how my art is good. I look at lots of tutorials -- not just about painting techniques, but about things like... composition, the ‘rule of thirds’, and breaking down subjects for easier painting (e.g. breaking bodies down into shapes, painting with values, gesture drawings etc).

A few years ago I wasn’t all that confident in my art and I relied too heavily on references. I’m very good at exactly copying a pose or facial features, and some people in the fandom thought I was tracing my art, so they made me the target of some stuff that was frankly cyberbullying, harassment etc.

I lost confidence in my art and didn’t draw for a long time, but then I started getting back into it over the last...two years? I knew my art could be looser, but during that time I didn’t really have the spoons to start working on it, and the people who targeted me would often make fun of my art and writing, so it was hard to post anything new while knowing it would ‘make the rounds’ in the wank forum, as it were. But after tripling my antidepressants, a year off work and gaining a little more resilience I was able to get back to basics and start with gesture drawings, anatomy studies, etc.

3. What makes me stay with it - other than hyperfixation and the need to draw my OCs? I love designing characters, either my own or other people’s. I love bringing other people’s creative designs to life, collaborating through commissions. I love doing comics right now, where I’m learning to create something that is in between a static illustration and an animated piece.

I completed a Diploma of Concept Design in 2016 so ya boy’s a qualified concept artist. Unfortunately I didn’t do as well as I would have liked due to ADHD and depression (the former of which I did not realise I had at the time) but I still finished it and learned some good techniques, and my art has only improved since then.

I also get inspired by the art and writing I see from other creators in the fandoms I’m in. Everyone has something great to contribute and I love seeing all the creativity, it makes me want to try new things.

4. How do I handle bad art days - I don’t have bad art days. Seriously. It’s okay sometimes if what you draw doesn’t come out the way you envisioned it, that’s just part and parcel of being an artist. If you’re ever not feeling inspired, it’s alright to just take a break for a couple days. Watch a cool tutorial, do some basic sketches, even if it’s gestures. Help someone else out with their art—that gets me inspired.
