Ingrid Pollard Three Drops of Blood

The exhibition includes photography, print, mixed media, text, found objects and an extensive project archive. It is the culmination of a two-year research project which has seen Pollard travel across Devon. Drawing on her interests in classification, systems of knowledge, leisure, trade and money, Pollard has honed in on botanical gardens, ferns and the unique historical collections of books at the Devon and Exeter Institution. Part of Pollard's research involved exploring the representation of botanicals in local lace making, including the renowned Honiton lace.

Do we wanna talk about the by-elections? I kinda want to talk about the by-elections.

Wakefield is good, but probably expected.

Tiverton and Honiton on the other hand, a swing of 30% to Lib Dems- does it matter? I think it has to, if only because it’ll surely make Tory MPs run scared- because it means there’s no such thing as a safe seat for them.

Honiton has had a conservative MP since 1841. Changing that is not nothing. This is proper donkey in a blue rosette country.

I mean, maybe it’s relevant their last MP stood down after watching porn in public, maybe it’s relevant the Tories seemed to stand a vacant idiot as a candidate, obviously it’s a shit time for Boris and they have nothing to offer.

And it’s not like I think the Lib Dems are a good option- given half a chance they’d probably go into coalition with the Tories and fuck us all over again BUT maybe this and the public support for strikes I’m seeing right now might drag the country back from the far right authoritarian state we seem to have sleepwalked into.

Like, if you’ve followed me for long you know I dream of revolution. But right now I’ll also take “not shipping people to Rwanda” you know?

Britain’s Conservative Party convincingly lost two by-elections for the House of Commons on the same day. These latest in a string of defeats caused the party’s co-chair to tender his resignation.

Conservative co-chair Oliver Dowden has resigned following two by-election losses for the party to Labour and the Liberal Democrats.

The Lib Dems overturned a huge Tory majority in Tiverton and Honiton, Devon, their third by-election victory over Boris Johnson's party this year.

And Labour retook the seat of Wakefield, West Yorkshire, which it lost at the 2019 general election.

Mr Dowden said Tory supporters were "distressed and disappointed".

The West Yorkshire constituency of Wakefield and the Devon constituency of Tiverton and Honiton became vacant after the Conservatives who held them had to step down because of sex related scandals.

Wakefield had been held by Labour prior to the 2019 general election. So there had been a consensus among pundits that the seat would return to Labour. However the margin of the Labour victory was greater than anticipated.

The Conservative loss in Tiverton and Honiton was in some ways even more spectacular. The area had been represented in Parliament by Conservatives for about a hundred years. So it was stunning for the Lib Dems to get 52.9% of the vote.

The collapse in support for the Conservatives has been blamed on Prime Minister Boris Johnson. His Partygate scandal is just the latest reason for dissatisfaction.

BoJo is currently in Rwanda at the Commonwealth Summit. And he’ll be spending much of next week at either the NATO summit in Spain or the G7 summit in Germany. So he’ll be able to avoid most of the political fallout at home from these losses until early July.

But these results will only add to the disquiet of Tory backbenchers who already tried to oust Johnson a few weeks ago. There is speculation that they may attempt to change Conservative Party rules in order to have another go at removing Johnson.

It's Fichu Friday!

This lovely ca.1800-25 fichu is from the V&A collection.

A fichu is a triangle-shaped piece of fabric which was worn around the decolletage.

Object description from the V&A website:

"Triangular fichu of delicate, but fairly large, drochel net. Around the edges, a delicate pattern of thin stemmed flowers entirely worked in cloth stitch with raised, woven edges. Attached to the fichu is an edging of poor quality Honiton bobbin lace."
