Chapter 33: How High

Author's note: So the “secret she carries with her always” that John needed reminding of from Rip has been revealed! I’m sincerely hoping this reveal is as cool as I was trying to make it lol. Next chapter we have a little celebration for our girl! I hope everyone is enjoying so far! I hope you love this chapter as well!

Kayce woke up from the sliver of light that snuck way in through the curtains in the bedroom. His eyes fluttered while consciousness greeted him. He felt weight on his right arm. Looking down, he recognized the mousy brown hair. Stella was nestled in his side, facing away from him. She used his arm as a pillow. He had finally gotten her to settle long enough to let sleep actually take her. He didn’t want to wake her just yet.

Stella moved in his direction again. Kayce appreciated the soft curve of her full cheeks all the way down to her hip in the glow of the morning light. He couldn’t resist placing a light kiss on her forehead. He wasn’t sure what had come over him. He had no idea how to move forward.

She started moving her head around like she was searching for a comfortable position again. She lifted her face and her lips found his jawline before he figured out what she was doing. He thought he heard her whisper his name. It was soft and quick, but Kayce closed his eyes. He almost couldn’t open them again.

Stella opened her eyes slowly, not ready to wake up for the day. “Is it time to get up yet?” Her right arm came up over her head and her toes pointed downward as she stretched with a groan.

Kayce chuckled deep in his chest and wrapped his arm around her shoulders drawing her in closer. “No, sugar. It’s still early.”

“And I’m awake, what the fuck?”

He laughed at her irritation. “Your body is set on ranch time.”

“Yeah well ranch time can go fuck itself for the next few days.” Stella curled her arms into herself, and turned her hands to place them on Kayce’s chest. She traced the scarred rocking Y that resided there. “Can I ask you something?”

A heavy handed knocking came to the door and startled both of them. He wrapped his arm around her shoulder tightly to keep her grounded.

She came up for air. “Kayce, who is it this early?” She mumbled with sleep filled eyes.

“You stay here. I’ll check.” He went to kiss her head again, but she turned his head and caught his lips with her own in her sleepy haze. Kayce smiled into the kiss and pulled the covers off of him.

She rolled toward his warm spot. “Be safe please.” She closed her eyes as she made herself comfortable again. He threw on the sweats he’d abandoned last night.

The pounding continued as he made his way to the door. “Alright, alright! I’m coming!” He swung the door open and was met with Ryan standing there.

“Where is she?”

“Hello to you too.” Stella’s brother tried to come in, but Kayce threw his arm in front of him. “She’s still sleeping. She had a rough night. I’m gonna let her sleep until later.” He blocked the door in a protective manner.

“Let me just go see her. Please?” Ryan wasn’t begging, but Kayce understood he just wanted to see her safe. He moved his arm to let him pass.

“She’s in the bedroom.” Kayce offered. A brief panic hit his chest as he tried to remember if his very naked best friend was covered.

Ryan nodded. He quietly stepped up to the door and peeked in. Stella laid there, peacefully unaware under the blankets. He could tell she hadn’t slept for long. The circles under her eyes gave that away. Ryan had seen her like this plenty of times when she was growing up. Dark circles, hair all over the place, sprawled across the bed in any position she found comfortable. Usually Kayce had some part in her dishevelment because they were galavanting all night. He breathed a sigh of relief. She was safe and that’s what mattered.

He stopped breathing when he became painfully aware of Kayce’s hat, pants and boots off to the side of the bed. Squinting his eyes, he turned back to Kayce. He was in sweats and nothing else. He looked at the couch and there were no signs of someone sleeping there. Ryan quickly glanced back at his sister, not sure if she was clothed. His heart rate picked up at the implication and he spun on his heel to retreat back to the outside.

“I’m gonna go catch up with everyone. Y’all meet us when she’s ready, okay?” He didn’t leave time for Kayce to reply. He knew he had to get out of there before he said something he might regret.

Kayce stood there at the door perplexed. From behind him, he heard, “Kace? Who was it?” Stella shuffled out to him rubbing her eyes. She had slipped on her white t-shirt and pants from the night before.

“It was your brother telling us to meet up with them when you’re ready.”

“Oh.” Stella came up to him and wrapped her arms around him. She felt warm and fuzzy. Safe. Kayce gazed down at her and leaned in to kiss her, testing the waters. When they pulled away from each other Stella asked, “did he want to see me at all?”

“Yeah, but I asked him to let you sleep. Don’t blame him for that.”

Stella yawned. “I’m gonna grab a shower.” She needed coffee before the day started. She stepped back from Kayce, holding one one of his hands, and smiled shyly at him. “Hit me with some coffee when I come out?”

Kayce squeezed her hand and laughed. “Yeah, sugar. It’ll be waitin’ for you.”

“Thank you!” She twirled and headed off to the shower.

Colby hung back from the rest of the wranglers. He waited for Ryan. He heard the tell tale sound of hoofbeats coming from the barn. He could see the tension in Ryan’s demeanor before he got to him. Colby pulled his eyebrows together.

Ryan said bluntly, “I think my sister and Kayce are sleeping together again.” Colby’s face lit up with shock as he watched Ryan continue to trot past him on his horse.

He nudged his horse to catch up. “Hold up, hold up! Did I hear you right? Again?”

“I didn’t stutter, did I?”

“That’s a big accusation, Ryan. Did you ask Stella? Kayce??”

“No. She was sleeping. She was safe and that’s what mattered. I had to get outta there.”

“What made you think they’re sleeping together? Supposedly again?”

“They had been in the same bed.”

“Okay?” Colby questioned. He understood his friend’s hesitancy on the subject, but without having the facts from the proverbial horse’s mouth, he didn’t understand jumping to conclusions. Yet. “We all know that couch is ass. I honestly don’t blame two grown adults for sharing a bed.”

“That’s not the point. They’ve hooked up before. A few weeks ago.”

Colby’s eyes widened. He couldn’t help but think to himself about how they’d finally made the jump. He shook his head. He would talk to Stella later. He had to focus. “Then what is the point? I mean, we all know that there’s always been something there. They’re just either too hard headed, or too oblivious to see it. Which is on par for both of them.”

Ryan glanced around, trying to slow his racing thoughts. Colby was right. There had always been a little something there if you watched the pair. Even through Kayce going off to the military, getting married, having a child, coming back home. His little sister had never made mention, or tried to make a move on it though. She seemed content to watch from the sidelines. She would jump in when necessary, but then resume her position on the flank. Until the one time she didn’t. In the most complicated way possible.

“He’s our foreman now.”

“And he was her best friend way before that even became an option on the table for him.”

“I don’t know, Colby.”

“Are you bothered because it's your baby sister?”

Ryan stopped his horse. That was the thing. He wasn’t sure. She wasn’t a baby anymore. He knew she could handle herself. He was bothered because Kayce was still married. He whispered, “he’s still married, Colby. Nothing good can come from that.”

Colby dropped his head. That was a detail he didn’t think about. Seeing Kayce here without Monica made him assume.

Ryan continued in a quiet voice. “I’ve never wanted the cowboy life for her. I never wanted her to stay in it, but she fell for it. Just like we did.”

“Well she is one, but also you have to think about what she would want. She’s a smart girl. And Kayce won’t do her dirty.”

Ryan sighed, “he’s already hurt her once. I don’t want it to happen again.”

“Why didn’t you tell me, man?”

“Stella was already embarrassed enough and I was furious with her. I didn’t want to humiliate her even more.”

“Well, we’ll cross that bridge when it comes. And I’ll help you with whatever we need to do. If, and that’s a big if, something is going on between them.”

Ryan sighed. He tapped his horse and moved forward. “We’ll see, I guess.” He went off to meet up with Jimmy and Lloyd. Colby stayed behind to keep up with the cattle.

Kayce heard the shower turn off 10 minutes ago. He was already dressed and ready to head out. The only thing stopping him was Stella. They didn’t have to rush because he had thought ahead and texted Jimmy to get their horses ready before he headed off with Lloyd. Thinking it might be safe to wander to the door, he knocked.

He heard Stella’s muffled reply. “Yeah?”

“Is it safe to come in?” The door whipped open in front of him. Looking up at him in all her glory was Stella, in just her bra and a pair of jeans. His gaze wanted to linger, but he quickly averted his eyes.

“Lord woman, put a shirt on before you open the door!”

Stella rolled her eyes. “Oh pfft. You’ve literally seen me naked.” Walking back from the door, she grabbed a light blue tank top to throw on. She walked into the bathroom and continued to finish getting ready before she put her shirt on. “You’ve cum in me. Multiple times at this point.” Kayce could see her in the reflection smirking at him in the mirror from the spot he was leaning.

He thought about that for a split second. “Yeah, we gotta be more careful about that.”

“I’m on birth control Kace, don’t worry.”

The gentle light from the bathroom made her look delicate. He questioned himself. ‘Since when?’ He tried to scrounge up any possible moment when his vision of her changed. He thought about the small kiss she gave him this morning in her sleep. The times they’d kissed before. ‘No, it couldn’t be then. What are you? 16? She didn’t realize what she was doing.’ He saw her turn and grab the tank top she brought with her.

Stella caught his gaze in the mirror. Her eyes softened and she put on a little smile. Kayce stopped breathing for a split second. ‘Oh.’ He figured it out.

“Hey, did you hear me?”

He shook his head and brought himself back to the present and breathing. “No, I’m sorry. I can’t focus when you look at me like that. Say it again?”

“Wait, what?”

“No, I missed what you said. Repeat it please?”

Stella nodded in slow motion with her eyebrows pulled together. “Uh huh.” She drug out the syllables. Her brain tried to process if she had heard him right.

She chose to ignore it for later. “Okay. Anyway, I said, we should probably get going if I’m gonna be there as moral support for Ryan.”

He continued leaning and waited for her. “You realize he’s gonna have a bull calf when he finds out, right?”

She took a deep breath and said, “oh I know,” and huffed out a laugh, “but I’m hoping the sizzle of his own skin will distract him enough.” She threw the tank top on and quickly snapped the door fully open. He glanced at her exposed skin of the scar on her chest and cleared his throat. It wasn’t every day that Stella wore a tank top that wasn't a high neck racer back.

Stella had a bashful blush on the apples of her cheeks as she looked up at him. “What? Do I still have sex hair?” She ran her fingers through her hair and redid her bun low on her neck to leave room for the ball cap she was gonna put on.

Kayce smiled warmly at her. “No. It’s nothin’. Just lookin’ at you.” He grabbed a plaid button up of his to give to her.

She scrunched her face up both trying to figure out his motive for that statement and also to focus on what he was handing her. He’d said that the morning they’d slept together. ‘What is he getting at?’ She questioned. He handed her glasses to her. He wanted to lean in and kiss her, but he didn’t want to push his luck. “Let’s go, sugar.” She followed, but paused to grab her ball cap on the way.

She and Kayce slowed to a trot as they came to the front of the trapper cabin that the branding always took place at. Stella hopped off of Abigail. Tying a quick slip knot, she panned her eyes around to find Ryan, Jimmy and Lloyd standing by a fire. Ryan pulled her to the side, away from prying ears.

“Did you and Kayce sleep together?”

“What?!” Stella hadn’t planned on being caught.

“Are you sleeping with Kayce again?”

“Jesus Ryan!” She quickly glanced back at Kayce and then back to her brother. “No! I mean we shared the bed, but I didn’t want to sleep by myself.” Stella tried to forget the confession early this morning and the following events. She felt bad lying, but she wanted to enjoy whatever was coming before something else happened. They needed to figure out what was going on first before they told anyone.

“We’re talking about this later.” He declared. Stella rolled her eyes at him because there was nothing to talk about. Well, there would be.

Everyone was quiet as the siblings rejoined the group. It was a heavy thing. Ritualistic at this point. Stella felt bad because she was the reason Ryan had been backed into this corner. If she wouldn’t have killed — ‘No. Stop. If you wouldn’t have killed them, you would be in a body bag right now.’

“You sure you really wanna do this, Ryan? You don’t have to do this just for me.”

“I’m so deep into this, Stellee.” He turned to her. “You know as well as I do that we’re not leaving this place.”

Stella nodded her head to the left while raising her eyebrows. Ryan was right. “Do you want to hold my hand? It’s really gonna fuckin’ suck.” She handed him something to bite down on.

Ryan pulled his eyebrows together. “Obviously it’s gonna suck.” He looked at Lloyd. “Don’t you touch her with that brand.”

Stella looked at Kayce first. Then to Lloyd who was getting closer with the hot brand. “It’s a little late for that.” Stella pulled back Kayce’s plaid shirt. The raised pink scar sat lower on her chest. A portion of the top of the Y could be seen above her tank top neckline. It was obvious it had been there a while. Ryan’s eyes nearly bugged out of his head.

“What the fu—,” he was interrupted by the sizzling of his skin, “— ahhhh!” He screamed through clenched teeth. Kayce and Jimmy caught Ryan underneath his arms. Lloyd rocked the brand on his chest and finally pulled it away. Stella came forward with some antiseptic and gauze.

“Sit him down over there.” She pointed to a log around the fire. “I’m so sorry, but this is gonna suck even more.” She began working on his wound. He pissed and moaned the whole time.

“Oh my god, you’re a fuckin’ butcher Stella!” Ryan fussed.

“Quit whining. Would you rather one of them do it? Because I can guarantee you they will be much less gentle than I’m being.” Kayce and Lloyd could be heard chuckling off to the side.

Ryan motioned to her brand trying to distract himself. “So when the hell did you get that?”

Stella fixed her glasses and ripped off a piece of medical tape for Ryan’s gauze. She squinted, trying to remember exactly when she got branded. “I was just about 18.” She admitted quietly.

Ryan breathed heavily. Partly from pain, but the other part was anger. He couldn’t believe she kept it from him. She couldn’t believe she let them do it in the first place. Or why they had done it. He couldn’t fix his gaze on one solid point.

Kayce broke him out of his irritable haze. “She did it for me, Ryan.”

“What?!” Ryan roared. He scrambled to his feet, ready to take a swing. Stella poked him in the fresh brand, successfully dropping him back onto the log he was sitting on.

Stella placed herself between the two men. “Knock it off, Ryan Stephen!” She huffed and brushed her hands on her pants. “Damn bunch of children.” She scoffed.

Lloyd was an unexpected participant in the conversation. “She was pissed Mr. Dutton was doing it to his own son. The reasons he was doing it for. Her best friend, if you recall? She stepped up, told Mr. Dutton to fuck himself and get off his high horse and do it to her too.” He added, “you remember when things got tense for your sister around then? She wasn’t at the ranch as much?”

“I went to stay with Kayce for like a year.” Stella reminisced on helping them out with Tate when he first came along. “If John Dutton was going to have any regret about doing that to his own son because he wouldn’t, “follow his orders,” I was gonna make him have me, an innocent bystander, on his conscience too.” Everyone could tell from the way she said it, she still meant every word. “And he didn’t take too kindly to me telling him to fuck off. Which was my whole goal. I wanted him to do it.” Kayce and Stella locked eyes across the dying fire. Their look lingered until Ryan cleared his throat.

They milled about while Ryan got ready to go back to work. Lloyd messed around with the fire. Jimmy made his way over to Stella. “You’re full of surprises, aren’t you?”

She smirked at him while putting the medical supplies in her saddle bag. “Full to the brim, Jaybird.”

“So how long have you had it?”

Stella turned on him and scrunched her face in thought. “Well I was almost 18 when it happened. So 8 years?” She thought about the time of year it was. “Wait, what's today's date?” She asked anyone who would answer.

Jimmy gave it some thought. “Uh, November 2nd?”

Her eyes bugged out of her head and she turned to the other men. “Oh shit, it’s my birthday today.”

Jimmy chuckled. “Wait, you forgot your own birthday?”

“In her defense there’s been a lot of near death going on. Kinda took over.” Kayce defended Stella.

“How old are you?” Jimmy asked.

“Weren't you ever told it’s rude to ask a lady her age?”

Jimmy shot a zinger her way. “I wasn’t aware I was asking a lady. I thought I was asking a cowboy.”

Stella’s whole body shook with laughter as she threw her head back. “Damn that was a good one, Jaybird.” She wiped tears out of her eyes. “Kace, you’re 29 now right?”

“Affirmative.”

“That would make me 27 as of today at,” she looked at Ryan for confirmation, “6:30 pm.” He nodded at her. He remembered the time like it was yesterday.

“Well we should do something for you, don’t you guys agree?” Jimmy looked to the men for help.

Stella shook her head. “Nah I dunno about all that. I just wanna hang out and be grateful I’m alive after yesterday.”

“Well then we’ll hang out.” Jimmy smiled at her.

Kayce interjected. “But first, my dad wants us up at breakfast, Stella.”

Her eyebrows rose. “What for?”

He shrugged. “I dunno. We should probably find out.”

Kayce held the door open for Stella and she weaved inside. She flipped her baseball cap backwards. The house smelled wonderful. Her stomach grumbled and growled, coming to life at the smells of bacon and eggs.

“Ugh I didn’t realize how hungry I was,” Stella groaned. Her mouth was almost watering at the thought of food. She turned quickly and stopped Kayce with a hand on his chest. He looked down at her. “So what did your dad want us up here for? I know I ate meals here often growing up, but it’s been a hell of a long time. What gives?”

Kayce placed his hands on her hips and spoke softly. “I really don’t know, Stell. C’mon.” He gently pushed her toward the dining room. He spotted his son at the table and kissed his head before sitting down.

“Hi daddy!” The youngster immediately brightened. He saw Stella and smiled. “Hi Aunt Stella!”

“Hey buddy.” She smiled softly at him. Stella’s eyes landed on Kayce’s sister when she stepped into the room. “What the hell happened to you?! Was it,” she stopped her question short because of the little ears that were still in the room.

John came into the room behind her. “It was.”

Stella whipped her head to her boss. “When?”

Beth cleared her throat. “Night before last.”

Stella looked between Kayce and John as John sat at the head of the table. “At the same time as me?”

Kayce shook his head. “No, after. I had just finished leaving a message to them when you called me. That’s why I was able to get to you so fast.”

“Why the hell didn’t anyone say anything?” She couldn’t believe that wasn’t the first thing out of their mouths.

“You both were a little busy.” Kayce defended as he grabbed his fork.

Stella locked eyes with the only daughter of the family. “Jesus Beth. I’m sorry.”

Beth gave her a smirk. “We both said there would be an attempt.”

“Yeah but I didn’t think it would have been this or what happened to me.”

“You underestimated them then.” Beth looked at the doorway. “Hey Gator?”

“Yeah?”

“Would you mind making me a smoothie, please?”

“Sure.” He stepped back into the room to get her request. “What kind of smoothie?”

“Two scoops of ice cream, three shots of vodka.”

“Two scoops, three shots. Got it.” He nodded and went off to the kitchen.

“And would you mind bringing it to me on the porch? Please?” Beth called out to the chef and started to rise out of her chair painfully slow.

“Of course.” Gator continued heading for the kitchen to get Beth’s smoothie made.

Beth leaned close to Stella. “You should see the other guy, I promise.”

“That I have no doubt of.” There was something unspoken between the women. They shared a look and Beth made her way out to the porch.

John wiped his mouth off. “Excuse me.” He stood and followed after his daughter.

Stella propped her hands against the back of the chair next to Tate and breathed out slowly. “Shit, Kayce.”

He popped some eggs in his mouth. “I know. They’re taken care of though. We’ll get the Beck brothers. Don’t worry.” He glanced at her before taking another bite. “Sit and eat. We’re gonna start Tate’s horse today.”

She shrugged. “I’m not hungry anymore. You two finish. I’ll be down at the barn.”

Chrollo Lucilfer had finally arrived up to the Prime Minister's extravagant bedroom, standing in front of the door and eyeing the browning blood splattered all over the floor with distaste. Carefully, he stepped over the body and head of the cadaverous corpse and eventually took his place beside you, looking down to face you. "You said that he touched you- that is why you killed him?"

"Yes, that's right... should I have refrained?" you queried cautiously, not meeting Chrollo's gaze, instead staring disdainfully at your bloodied dress.

Chrollo remained silent for a few seconds before answering. "No- I suppose we had no use for him; he'd already given up the location of his artifacts. Besides... I'm not sure that I'm very fond of the idea of him with his hands all over you..." Chrollo's jaw tightened ever so slightly as he folded his arms across his chest, staring at the floor with contempt.

You glanced up at your boss, a little caught off guard by his expression. It wasn't like he seemed outraged- but there was certainly something a bit off about his reaction. Since when did Chrollo care about anyone touching you? Usually it was anything for the mission- but now he seemed... displeased as he eyed the corpse before him dubiously. It was strange- there had been many times on missions where Troupe women had had to sleep with or seduce targets, but Chrollo had never seemed bothered by it when Machi or Pakunoda did it. Why were you suddenly an issue?

Opting to put the matter aside, you shrugged dismissively. "What matters is that we know where the treasures are- have the other Spiders been sent down to the chapel already?"

Chrollo seemed to snap out of his daze, abruptly lifting his head back up to look back at you. "Oh- yes, they were dispatched around fifteen minutes ago. They should be alright- a few guards shouldn't be a problem for them at all."

You were even more confused now, furrowing your brow. "Aren't we going to go join them?"

Chrollo's perpetually pensive gaze seemed to intensify as he looked you directly in the eyes, and suddenly you were overly conscious of the fact that your dress was still totally unzipped, leaving your Spider tattoo and much of your bare waist and back visible. Feeling a little embarrassed at being half-naked in front of your boss, you dropped your gaze to your heels, completely blood-soaked as well.

"Why would we? Retrieving a few artifacts should not be a difficult task for them- if they do happen to need us, they'll contact us."

"Oh. Uh- alright." You didn't know what else to say, pulling at your fingertips awkwardly before deciding to reach behind you to try and zip up your dress to escape from the tension. However, the angle you were positioned in stopped your arms from bending far enough to reach your zipper.

Oh, great.

"B- Chrollo, would you mind helping me redress?" you queried reluctantly, a bit mortified to have to ask the man to help you dress. "I'm sorry- I hope I didn't off-put you with my dress unzipped like that." You got to your feet, moving toward Chrollo with your eyes still fixed on the floor.

"As a matter of fact, I do mind." Chrollo replied, gazing down at you with an unreadable expression on his face.

You blinked hard before immediately defaulting to apologizing profusely, trying to correct yourself. Obviously he'd be uncomfortable- that was weird! It was weird to have your superior put your clothes back on. You shouldn't even have asked.

"You do? I apologize, I really should have known that wouldn't be proper. I'll get it myself-"

"Why would you want to cover up such beautiful skin?"

You froze- as in, you came to a complete dead stop.

What did your boss just say to you?

"I- huh?" was all you could manage to blurt. Had you heard Chrollo right? What was going on?

When Chrollo didn't respond immediately, you decided that the remark had just been your ears playing suspiciously realistic pranks on you. You blinked and wrinkled your nose, baffled, before realizing that you were still standing awkwardly in front of Chrollo, your dress still unzipped, and you immediately dropped your eyes to the ground.

"I see you're a little perplexed," Chrollo began suddenly, making you jerk your head back up in surprise. So you hadn't been hearing things- he'd actually told you that you had beautiful skin. Now you felt totally discombobulated- Chrollo wasn't making any sense. Not knowing what to say, you opted to simply stay silent as he continued, his voice calm and even as usual despite the uncharacteristically... personal words that were coming out of his mouth.

"Don't look so bewildered, Y/N." Chrollo smiled, a warm gesture with a hint of cockiness, and you couldn't believe he was acting so nonchalant. "Surely I'm not so much your superior that I can't pay you a small compliment without you getting flustered?" He tilted his head at you with a pitifully smug look on his face, his hair dropping down his head to cover his bandage.

It was getting ridiculously difficult to hide the hot blush spreading across your cheeks, but not wanting to sacrifice your dignity, you stared Chrollo in the eyes defiantly, crossing your arms across your chest, most of your upper body with the exception of your breasts still exposed.

"Well- are you enjoying the view, Chrollo?" you asked bluntly and a little peevishly, at a loss for anything else; his expression changed into one of surprise at your words.

The second the question left your mouth, you cringed internally, cursing yourself for saying something like that to your boss. He could say what he wanted- but you couldn't. You felt like an absolute mess- why did Chrollo even feel the need to compliment you to begin with? You were never going to recover from this.

But you were rather caught off guard when Chrollo responded with: "As a matter of fact, I believe I am."

Without thinking, you let out a quick disgruntled exhale- now you'd never be able to regain your composure. Unable to come up with anything flirtatious and still quite confused, you made a lame attempt to maneuver your way out of the situation using reason, taking several steps back from the man to make yourself seem more disinterested than you admittedly actually were. "Chrollo, all I do is work for you. There's just no way we can-"

You knew it was a weaker protest than you'd hoped it to be when Chrollo interrupted you with an audible chuckle before fixing you with a stare that made your knees wobble a little. Still, you held his tranquil but mischievous gaze the best you could.

"Y/N," Chrollo murmured, almost whispered- "I don't want to hear your excuses. Come here."

Okay, so he definitely saw straight through your facade. Great- at the very least, you hoped he couldn't sense your growing arousal, the moisture pooling in between your legs. It would be humiliating if he found out you were already turned on.

A little warily, you walked back towards him, your dress halfway down your shoulders and barely covering your chest anymore. What was he doing? Was he displeased with you?

Your questions were answered when Chrollo took your chin in his hands delicately and pressed your lips gently to his, and instinctively you lifted your own arm and wrapped a hand around the wrist that had your chin. Chrollo seemed to sense that you were on edge, however, and wrapped his other arm around your waist firmly, as if to protect you from some unseen danger. The gesture did help your body relax some, and it was just after you closed your eyes as well that Chrollo pulled away.

"Chrollo, why-?"

Chrollo held up a hand to stop you mid-sentence, already knowing what you would ask him. "Ah- it's a little hard to pinpoint just when I began to feel something for you, I'm afraid. But as for why?"

You stood there expectantly, still a little dazed from Chrollo's tender kiss, waiting for him to tell you what had drawn him to you.

"I'm afraid I can't tell you exactly what it was." Chrollo's stare suddenly intensified, and he leaned down to kiss you again, unexpectedly; this time you did not stiffen.

You were quiet for a little while. "Well... I suppose I can't say I don't feel the same way... but what about the others? Of course, right now we still have a mission to carry out, and I'm sure the other spiders are waiting for us. And not just now- if we try to go anywhere with this, what would it do to the Troupe's dynamic?" The initial euphoria of Chrollo's kiss had faded away and doubt began to set in. "Perhaps this isn't the best idea- there's just so much to consider-"

"Didn't I say I didn't want to hear any more excuses, Y/N?" Chrollo cut you off, his expression somewhat goading with an eyebrow raised. "If anybody has anything to say about this, I'll deal with it myself. Do you understand?" His tone was firm and authoritative, and it put you a little back on edge.

When you didn't respond, Chrollo took it as to mean that you agreed. "Why don't you calm down, my dear- nobody will harm you. I only want to please you."

You still weren't that convinced- this all felt quite sudden and you weren't sure how to process it. The words were sweet and they seemed sincere- but what was really behind them? Dubious, you remained silent.

"God, you're stubborn," Chrollo muttered, and you turned to him in shock- but you barely had time to process the remark before you felt Chrollo's arm slip around your waist and your body being pushed back until you were at the foot of the bed- and once you were there, you toppled over, Chrollo forcing your back down onto the bed.

"Chrollo-" you gasped, but he cut you off with a passionate kiss, one that made you glad you were already laying down- and without thinking, you kissed him back as his hands made their way to the loose straps of your dress and slid them down your arms; you made no move to stop him.

"Don't worry," Chrollo promised, voice breathless but level as always. "As I said- I only want to please you."

feral cat dad: No, there isn't. UA is full of future heroes who will likely need to build muscle to save others, to do that, you need to eat well, Nezu's rule for us dorm kids has always been to make sure we eat, he doesn't care how much it costs as long as you're healthy.

deku deck-you: Usually I had to cost less than 1,000¥ per week. It was hard, especially building muscle to be a hero. I ate rice and eggs a lot so I wasn't completely starving but it was always hard living with them.

ranch flavored jello: Aren't your parents like famous or something? Why did they want you to be on a budget?

deku deck-you: They didn't like dealing with me besides to scream at me. I think it was to keep me from leaving them. They'd hand me exactly 1,000¥ every week I had to use my money for food because they wouldn't buy food for me after I turned 5. Then they'd still tell me what I couldn't buy.

feral cat dad: Kind of. Back then, fifteen years ago, there was no teacher or other students in the dorms, just me and Nezu. I was fresh from nine years in a foster home that would spend the money meant to support me on their own son.

feral cat dad: For the first month, I didn't buy myself food. I'd eat breakfast and lunch on school days and skip dinner and meals on weekends because I was scared of spending UA's money.

feral cat dad: After almost a month with no financial transactions on my account and the Sports Festival coming up, Nezu did a surprise inspection and flipped out when there was no food in the kitchen. He forced me to the store and made me buy dinner for us two because he wouldn't allow a student under his roof to not have food for themselves.

feral cat dad: Nezu sat me down and told me the same thing I told you and, after the Sports Festival, I actually bought myself and four friends dinner at a nice restaurant to celebrate me and my friend's winning tie and I paid the bill without even thinking about it.

au:// hiiii, so a lot of people have been asking about a part 2 for Baby Blues (thank y’all so much for all the support btw i didn’t expect that many people to read it <33) and i am working on a part 2 currently so expect that to be out soon! but for now here’s a david one that i’ve been working on for the past couple of days :)

The first time you met the boys, you had been absolutely captivated by David. It was like he demanded all attention be on him as soon as he made his way into a room, and you had fallen right into his trap. Despite the immediate infatuation you had of him, you distanced yourself. You weren’t stupid, you knew about those four boys - they were bad news, they weren’t good people to spend your free time with.

The second time you ran into the boys, his eyes met yours almost as soon as you were within distance of them. His lips pulled into a jagged smirk as he moved to make his way towards you. As soon as you realized what was happening, you quickly turned and busied yourself with searching through the shelves of jewelry set up at a small outside stand.

You would have never known he was standing behind you if he hadn't spoken directly into your ear.

"It’s a scam, you know."

You jumped slightly, and whirled on your heels to face him. You squinted your eyes at him, putting on a much more confident persona than you were used to. "What is?"

"The prices for the jewelry. They just buy them and sell them here for double the price. If you want a piercing my friend will be happy to do it for you."

"Oh yeah? They any good?" You challenged, following after him as he once again began walking - this time making his way back towards the line of bikes. His friends were no longer lingering there, they must have wandered off shortly after parking their vehicles.

"She’s done most of our piercings, she also makes necklaces and bracelets so - she has whatever you want." He grinned back at you over his shoulder. You could almost immediately tell who he was talking about. A girl around his age, who always rode on and off the boardwalk with the gang but separated from them almost immediately after the bikes were stopped. Her wrists were lined with gorgeous, dainty bracelets and she must have had at least three piercings in each ear. "Wanna go for a ride?" He looked you straight in the eye as he leaned back against the railing separating the wood of the raised walkway from the beach sand.

"Oh I'd better not." You declined almost immediately. It wasn’t exactly in your best interest to leave with one of the most feared men in town - especially in a place like santa carla. "I have to meet back up with my friends in the parking lot soon, maybe another time though." You spoke quickly, feeling your confident facade begin to waver the longer his cold eyes burned holes into your own.

You waved quickly before turning and practically bolting towards the other end of the boardwalk. You had told him a blatant lie that you were sure he had seen straight through - you had no friends waiting for you in the parking lot. You were just hoping to make it home before running into any other sketchy people.

The third time you ran into the boys, you quite literally ran into them. There had been a man following you consistently on the boardwalk the entire night. It wasn’t until mostly everyone had cleared off the boardwalk, and you were leaving your work, that he really decided to come after you.

When walking out of the small shop after closing up for your boss for the night, he had been leaning against the wall next to the door. "Hey doll, looking for a good time?"

"Oh, uh, no thanks. Not tonight." You tried to turn him down gently and immediately after turned to continue making your way to the parking lot. You didn’t even make it a couple feet before the man tightly grabbed your wrist and whipped you back around.

"No, come on babe. I insist." He gritted out trying to pull you along with him. You tried to think quickly in your panic, frantically looking around to find a way out of your situation. You tried kicking at his legs and scratching at his fingers but it did little to deter the man from what he was set on doing.

In one last desperate attempt, you brought your leg back and stomped on the back of his knee as hard as you possibly could. His leg buckled and he let his grip slip from your wrist in surprise. You took the opportunity given to you and ripped yourself out of his wavering grip, turning and running as fast as you could towards the beach desperately hoping there was a bonfire going on.

What you got instead, was much better. The four punks of the boardwalk were walking along the shoreline, their eyes lingering on each bonfire they passed. You took your chances and ran towards the platinum blond. He had tried to get you to leave with him not even three weeks ago, and even if the chances were dangerously slim - you begged to whatever higher power there was that the four would help get the creep running after you off your back.

You almost body-slammed into the lanky blond before frantically grabbing on to the platinum's arm. He turned around quickly enough to startle you but you were far too nervous to let it alter your decision.

"Hi, hi- um, I’m so sorry but could you please help me?" His eery smirk was replaced by a frown of utter confusion - eyebrows furrowing and icy blues traveling over your form to check for any injuries that you could possibly need help with. You turned to point out the creep standing at the top of the stairs who seemed to be scanning the beach for where you had run off to. "That man, he just tried to- I don’t even know what he was trying to do but he grabbed me and was trying to bring me somewhere after I declined his request to hang out and I don’t know, could you just-" You rambled, cutting yourself off however when the creep's eyes locked with your own.

His gaze immediately hardened as he jumped down the remaining stairs and jogged over to where you stood.

Once he stood within distance, he ignored the other four's presence and grabbed your wrist once more. "There you are babe, I thought I lost you for a second. Come on." He tried to drag you after him once more when you began to pull at his grip again.

"No, would you stop asshole? I don’t know you." You growled, but your words were ignored as you continued to be pulled back towards the stairs. You dug your heels into the sand and slowly your body came to a stop even as he continued to try and pull you behind him.

His attempts were proven useless as the platinum finally spoke up, grabbing onto your elbow to prevent you from being pulled any further. "Excuse me, the young lady said she doesn’t know you. I think it’s in your best interest to get lost bud." The other three teens moved to stand behind you, shoulders squared and chins raised to make themselves seem as intimidating as possible.

'With the way they rule the boardwalk I don’t think mire intimidation is entirely necessary.' The idea flashed across your mind and the creep seemed to have the same thought as he quite literally looked like he was about to shit his pants as he immediately ducked his head and took off back towards the parking lot.

"You alright?" Platinum grumbled, letting go of your elbow to light the cigarette in between his lips.

"Yeah, yeah. I’m good." You whispered, trying to convince yourself more than you were trying to convince him. "Just startled me is all." You whipped your palms on the legs of your pants, trying to calm your nerves even though they were going completely haywire in the presence of the boys.

"Name's Paul, dudette. And you are?" The lanky blond bubbled out, holding out his hand for a shake.

You smiled at his antics and reached out to shake his hand in your own. "I’m y/n." You answered, trying not to blush when you noticed platinum's eyes raking up and down your form. "Thank y'all so much for getting that dude off my back, he’s been freaking me out all night."

"Well, you won’t have to worry about him anymore." Platinum spoke, an underlying promise in his words that you weren’t able to pick up on. "David."

"Dwayne."

"I’m Marko babe, nice to meet you." A cheshire grin was sent your way as the other two of the group introduced themselves after David.

"Well thank you, once again. It means a lot." You smiled sweetly at each of them before beginning to turn on your heel. "I'd better get going, I’ll see y'all around."

You were stopped by David who reached out to wrap an arm around your should and hold you in place. "Do ya have to run off so soon? Hang out with us for a while doll."

And with little convincing, you agreed to spend the rest of the night with them. Before you knew it, weeks passed quickly. You had become quite the new asset to their tiny group and spent almost every night with them after getting off of work. You’d gotten closer with the four of them than you’d ever been with anyone in your entire life, it almost felt like fate that you had gotten twisted up with them.

Every night felt like a party, and you had never felt more happy than when you were with them. Paul had left the truth about what they were slip one night while high and immediately after had sobered up and stared at you with wide eyes.

You had been suspicious of them for awhile before the truth came out - coming to realize that they only came to the boardwalk strictly after the sun had set and had dodged all your attempts at making plans with them during the daytime. The most striking coincidence you've come to realize is that anytime anyone gave you or the boys a hard time, their face would wind up on a missing persons flyer the next day.

"What do you mean you already knew?" Marko had gaped at you after you shrugged off the confession.

"Well I didn’t know exactly what you were, I just knew something was up. Y’all aren’t the best at hiding it." You had grinned back at the four of them.

"Well, at least she didn’t flip the hell out and faint." Dwayne joked, and you all continued on with the night as if it had never happened.

The longer you hung around with the boys, the more the platinum leader continuously swept you off your feet. You didn’t want to admit it, too stubborn to accept the fact that you had feelings for someone like him who had girls throwing themselves at him every minute of every day.

Not to say the latter didn’t annoy you, because you could practically feel yourself smoking at the ears everytime he would leave with a girl.

'Sure,' You tried to convince yourself. 'He didn’t actually have feelings for them or anything, they were just meals.' But that never seemed to help the small pang in your chest each time it happened.

One night, you were feeling especially upset about the whole situation. He had a beach bunny tucked into his side the entire night, and the fact she was the exact opposite of you hurt the most.

Halfway through the night and you had already gotten completely agitated with the entire situation. The group had come up with the idea to go find a bonfire to find some other people to hangout with. You knew this was a ploy to get the girl and a group of easy targets alone for them to feast on, so you took it upon yourself and uninvited yourself from the plans.

The boys picked up on your sour mood as soon as you stood up to gather your things early. "Hey where you going?" Marko spoke up through a mouthful of fries. "We weren’t planning on going for another half hour."

"Yeah well I think I’m just gonna head back. I’ll see you guys later on, maybe." You spoke short and within a certain finality to your tone, letting them know that all you wanted at that moment was to lounge around the cave on your lonesome.

Each of the boys bid you a farewell, except for the one and only reason for your attitude. The leather clad vampire only spared you an eye-roll before turning his attention back to the chick clinging onto his side.

You made quite the show of rolling your eyes back at him before turning on the ball of your foot and walking out of the restaurant. Hours passed at the cave and you probably switched around to doing different things at least a dozen times. At one point you put on one of Dwayne's leather jackets and waddled around the main area, pretending to be tough and serious. Most things only managed to keep you entertained for a half hour at best and in the end you settled for spreading out across the couch, drumming your fingers against your thighs to the beat of the songs playing through the radio speakers.

It honestly felt like you had been waiting for days when your thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a motorcycle engine outside the cave. There were no shouts or yells of excitement however, and there only seemed to be one engine roaring. After a few seconds the noise was cut off and footsteps padded against the rickety stairs leading down to the opening of the cave.

You looked over to see David's boots come into view as he stepped down the fallen rocks leading into the main room. He stopped at the bottom of the rocks and his eyes locked on yours. "We’ve gotta talk."

"I don’t want to talk to you right now." You immediately refused, turning on your side to face the back of the couch and hopefully pretend to be trying to fall asleep. He jumped down from the platform and landed with a small thump, making his way over to where the radio sat and turning down the volume until the only noise in the cave was your breathing and the occasional flutter of wings from one of Marko's pigeons.

"Why did you storm off?"

"I was tired and had a headache."

"You know what I think?" You didn’t reply. He grabbed your legs and twisted you around to face him. He leaned forward until his hand was pressed against the back of the sofa, caging you in with his eyes locked onto yours. "I think you’re lying."

"Oh, do you?" You mocked, attempting to push him away and kick his hand away from your shin. You knew you were playing with fire. You had no real reason to be angry with him, he didn’t know about your feelings and he wasn’t required to like you back. But that didn’t stop you from being a little bitter about the whole thing.

"I don’t know what your problem is, but I think you need to chill out. I can’t help if you won’t talk to me normally." He was acting surprisingly calm, and you were sure that if anyone else had been around while you were giving him this attitude he would be completely tearing into you with just as much bitterness.

"My problem?" You cried. "What’s your problem?"

"My problem?" He echoed right back to you. "What in the fuck are you going on about?"

"At this point you must know I like you! And yet you walk around with some broad clung to your side every night and pay no mind to me until we’re back at the cave! It’s like you completely ignore my presence when you’re with someone else."

His face fell flat, and he stared into your eyes with blank pupils, no emotion shining through the blue. "I’m sorry, back up."

You stared right back at him, a hint of regret beginning to build in your bones. Maybe you shouldn’t have confessed to him, maybe he'd laugh in your face and never speak to you again. Or worse - maybe he'd tell the boys and they'd all laugh in your face and then never talk to you again.

"You like me? And I, was supposed to know that?" His eyebrow raised into a tilt as he laughed. "You've never showed any interest - how was I supposed to pick up on that?"

You grew flustered, twiddling your fingers on your lap. "I don’t know... mind reading?"

He laughed, a genuine one. Not his usual mocking one he used when he was playing with victims or teasing one of the boys. "I don’t usually use that trick, babe. You should’ve just said something."

"Why? So you could laugh it off?" You bit back, leaning back on the couch with a pout forming on your lips. He grinned, moving to sit next to you on the sofa and reaching out to grab at your waist and pull you into his side.

"No, so I could tell you that you threw a fit and stormed off for no reason." He smirked cockily at you before swooping in to capture you lips in a sultry kiss. You literally felt yourself lose your breath as you leaned into him, reaching up to cup the sides of his neck and hold him as close to you as possible.

When you both pulled away you gasped air into your lungs as you locked your own eyes with his. "I was being kind of dramatic, huh?"

His smirk returned to his lips as he stood, wrapping his fingers around your wrist to pull you after him. "Dramatic is a little of an understatement kitten."

He moved to sit on his wheelchair, pulling you along to sit on his lap. His arms immediately made their way around your waist as he rested his chin on your shoulder. "Talk it out next time?" You suggested, turning your head to smile at him as you heard the other three pull up outside the cave with a few whoops and cheers.

"Sounds good to me." He agreed, reaching to take out a cigarette.

Though this isn’t image heavy, it’s pretty wordy, so I’m gonna hide it behind a cut to save your dash (after a teaser, of course)

We come into this at 1:01 where Alex is getting noms for his date with Michael. We can see the smile on his face as he takes the food. There's a shift in the music, a sort of sudden, heavy beat that tapers off into mid-tone music as Alex turns and we see Michael in the left-hand side of the frame talking to a guy in a huge white cowboy hat who Definitely Doesn't Look Like He's Checking For The Cops. We watch Alex watch Michael shake the guy's hand, and then at 1:05 cut to a shot of their hands meeting in the shake and Michael getting a crisp few notes left behind. He starts counting it - and we don't get to see his face, just his hands - and cut to a wide shot at 1:09 of Alex watching this interaction go down. He looks around, then we come closer, to a mid-shot to focus on Alex's face, watching.

We swing to an over-the-shoulder as the guy takes a spool of copper wire from the truck and walks off, and Michael is completely nonchalant about the whole thing.

Remember the previous conversation that he'd had with his dad, and we watched the way that his head dropped, his eyes falling as the words that Jesse Manes said got into his head and under his skin (and played on the guilt complex that he has for the fact that he ruined Michael's life when they were teenagers)? This is playing directly into that.

1:14 we're back focused on Alex again and he shakes his head a little, he's in the centre of the shot rather than being edge-framed like he normally is and we see him walking out of the shot to the left instead of forwards, towards Michael (which we would have expected), looking conflicted. The camera pans up slowly to Michael, who's just sitting and - presumably - waiting for Alex to rejoin him, alone in his half of the frame.

(Also, from a continuity point of view, the lighting of the first section, when Alex was like 'lemme sit here dude I wanna hang' it was like, super bright out, like early afternoon. Now it's pitch dark? How many times did they watch Mars Attacks??!)

1:22 we see Michael close up the tailgate and head up towards the cabin of the truck. It's easy to assume that Alex hasn't been back, or that perhaps it was the end of the evening when Alex grabbed food? I don't even know how time works in this episode, I'm not sure anyone does.

Alex comes into the back of the shot as Michael opens the door and we're looking through the car window. This time there's no barrier between them; Michael's on the same side of the door as Alex. He's on the right and Alex is in the centre.

1:27 Michael's bedroom "you wanna go for a ride" face and head turn does things to me, y'all. He looks so open and flirtatious and happy here, mischief written on his face as he asks. Like, he's expecting the answer to be yes because that's what all the signs point to. Alex went back to him after talking with his father. Alex sat with him while they watched the movie. Alex approached him, first, and made himself comfortable in Michael's space (carving a place for himself again just like he had when they were teenagers and he'd said that the nights were cold and there was somewhere Michael could stay and sleep and be safe). There's hope lighting up his eyes that this is something. That Alex will stay again. That Alex won't leave.

Sorry, Michael, that's not a Thing right now.

1:29 we have a side-shot of Alex, but his eyeline's off; he's not consistently looking at Michael, his eyes are moving to the left and right, the camera isn't steady for the three seconds it's on him and the conflict on his face, in the dark lighting over half his face and the wobbly camera tell the audience that he's not confident in what he's saying. We can equate it back to the conversation with Jesse relatively easily when he starts talking and it's sort of an 'oh shit' moment for the audience because we realise that yep, Jesse Manes did this. "This isn't gonna work, Guerin."

1:31 we're back on Michael, on the right, the door's behind him and trapping him in the shot. He doesn't say anything and dear God Vlamis does SUCH a good job opposite Tyler. You can see his hopes being crushed in that second and a half that we're looking at his face. 1:31-1:33, go look, I'll wait.

Are you back?

Okay. So, you can literally see the light in Michael's eyes dying there. You can hear nothing but the sound of echoing crickets/cicadas (I live in the UK, alright, we have no chirping ambient insects), as he waits for Alex to keep talking. There's not even any background chatter from the extras, like there is when we're focused on Alex. There's a vacuum of silence as Michael just looks at Alex. Just looks. Waits. He knows what's coming. He's bracing himself for it. And Vlamis shows that in a second.

1:33. Alex. Left-hand side of the screen, face half in shadow (often used to denote conflict, sometimes seen in colours when people are fighting impulses, it's used in Return of the Jedi with Luke where he's lit one side in red and one in blue at one point). He talks about the side hustle and Michael (1:39) is officially realising what's happening. He's probably thinking back to the conversation he saw Jesse and Alex having earlier, since we know he saw them as he looked directly at them. Putting the pieces together.

1:41, he tosses something (probably not keys, kind of 'chinks' so definitely metallic) into the car. This shot's  another mid-shot, Alex's back is to us and we're looking at Michael, trapped between Alex and the door of his truck, looking smaller (by virtue of him being further away from the camera, but it works under the circumstances of the moment; Alex has just called him out, told him that whatever they've got, whatever they might have, won't work because of what, copper wire?).

We have a bit of back and forth shots going on for the next few seconds, where Michael admits to selling copper wire, and asking who cares. This involves a cut to a side shot over the truck bed which is an interesting choice to make when we’ve been using back and forth POV shots previously.  We view that conversation from the opposite side of the truck, the two of them small in their space under a literally midnight sky. It emphasises Michael and Alex in the space again, small under the sky, but small and apart rather than small and together as we’ve seen before. When Alex says "I do", he's on his own side of the frame but he leans forward. He's not moving into Michael's space fully, but he leans forward quite a lot. 

1:54 "I can't be with a criminal" Alex is literally regurgitating his father's words there and it's painful for us to watch because his expression is all hard lines and frowns, which is different to the soft brightness of earlier when Michael sat next to him and accepted his date offer.

1:55 Michael's on the right, Alex takes up literally half the screen with the back of his blurry head. Alex has made no concessions this time, he's stood his ground and not moved but that's okay. Michael's gonna do it. 1:56 we can almost see him piecing together that cowboy swagger before he rocks forward, the camera stays deadly still since Michael's the only movement, dropping a painfully honest truth bomb on Alex: "All my life, the system has put me at the mercy of criminals."  He steps right up into Alex's space, the same kind of closeness that there was during the reunion that led to The Kiss. Except we cut to Alex at 2:01 who is pulling a face similar to the dismissive one that Jesse pulled at Alex earlier on. He's looking away, partly because that's an excuse, Guerin, and probably again, because of that guilt complex, the rush of guilt that Michael needs to make ends meet by selling copper wire for cash that's been taken from the junkyard is partly linked to him not going to UNM, to not having a future, and as far as Alex is aware, that's his fault.

2:02 "I'm just trying to survive it."

Michael's still close and though this scene should be intimate it's not. The lighting's cold and almost clinical where we can see it hitting Michael's face. It's reminiscent of the aggressive confrontation in the pilot (you tryna hold my hand, Private?)

2:05 Alex looks back at Michael then, looking fed up (another Tyler Jaw Tick, thank you Tyler) and frustrated and defensive. Michael, however, is hurting and open and vulnerable until 2:07 when that swagger comes back, that sharp line of defensiveness, the sarcasm and bite that Michael uses as a defence mechanism.

2:07 "Guess you're still the guy just looking for any excuse to walk away, huh."

We're focused solely on Michael as he makes his dig. He's leaning right into Alex, throwing himself into Alex's shadow, in his space. But as he pulls back, when he says 'walk away', he does that, backs up a few steps, pulls himself out of Alex's gravity and towards his truck door. He's backtracking the steps he'd taken earlier when the cowboy swagger was in place, challenging Alex's giving-a-shit about his side hustle. The realisation that nothing's changed - and here, this line of dialogue, supports the surprise when Michael said 'you stayed' like it was something precious and novel, it supports the 'is that what you want?' from the pilot because if Alex has walked away over and over, of course, he'd want Michael gone. It's also a good contrast for us, as an audience, to understand that though we've really only seen Alex walking toward there's a huge history of walking away that we haven't seen. It gives a palpable history to this pairing.

2:11 Michael physically turns to walk away from Alex and goes to climb into his truck. He stops at the door and moves out of the frame, so we're focused on watching Alex through the open car window, framed in the moment, narrowed and boxed in by the edges of the car door like a picture-frame (boxed in by his father's voice, by DADT - context matters, kids, and I'm pretty sure Alex would have at least spent a couple of years under DADT before it was repealed, boxed in by the person he had to become to survive being in the military when all he wanted to do was make music and love a curly-haired boy who made his home town feel like home) as he says "Maybe, and you're still so good at giving them to me."

The camera wobbles a little as Alex rocks on the spot, almost like he's doubting his convictions, challenging the narrative in his head that sounds like a lifetime under Jesse Manes and feels like the weight of ruining the life of the person he loves before he shakes his head and disappears off screen. He doesn't actually look away until the last possible moment, eyes still on Michael right up until the point where he turns his head to walk away.

It's important to note that here, between this "break up" conversation there's ambient music that kicks in at 1:46, it's soft and mournful, low and lyrical, there's no beat to it, it has a sort of low, sad feel to it. A thrumming beat kicks in almost like a heartbeat (the precursor to the Roswell Sting that plays over the opening credits) at 2:20, just before Michael gets into his truck, giving the audience a moment of heightened emotion as the thrumming is quick paced and linked with Michael climbing into the truck, a window into the tightness in his chest and just how hurt he is. The camera swings along with him as it does, finishing on a close up of him, framed by the window of the car, looking in his wing mirror and sighing heavily.

The break up in this feels stiff, the framing supports that Alex feels trapped by something, the way that the door was tight around him, the way that we repeatedly watched it from a lower angle (through the open window of Michael's open door) and then the way we watched Michael invading Alex's space in a similar way to his father in the previous clip (similar but different, I hasten to add, because Michael is not coming from a place of malice). It hurts, because we get a harken back to the pilot: "are you cooking meth?" "I cannot ignore what I saw tonight" "I can't be with a criminal" these phrases are all linked with his time in the Air Force one way or another, indicating to us that the wedge is there and has been there for a while. We know it was the ten-year high school reunion, so the hindsight gives us the scope of 'welp, they were obviously something in school'. It gives weight to the fact that earlier on there were Airmen between them in a lot of the daytime shots, a visual foreshadowing of what was to come at the end of the episode and we finish this meta with Michael, alone in the dark in his truck, boxed in by his own trappings and behaviours, left by Alex, who we have now learned is more conflicted and complicated than was first presented to us.

Chapter 34.

“Am I reading into things–” Noble wonders the question aloud as we trail a few steps behind Vinny and Bianca down West Fourth Street. “Or is that happening?”

Scrutinizing the pair in front of us – Noble’s sister and my partner, I watch them walk together. Their body language is fairly ordinary for two people having a conversation. But then again, I hadn’t really considered the possibilities so I’ve probably missed any signs that they could be into one another.

“I don’t know,” I murmur. “Vinny’s not as much of a horny jackass tonight which is sort of surprising.”

Noble considers it with a nod while he watches them. He tilts his head when his sister elbows Vinny in the side prompting a laugh as he tips his face to the sky. “Maybe he’s not interested,” Noble proposes, “so he’s toned down.”

“Or maybe he is interested, and he’s making an effort–” I theorize. Then I glance over to gauge Noble’s reaction to that idea. “What do you think about that?”

“No.” He cuts a decisive shake of his head. “That’s not happening. I mean, we’re here for a day, it’s not like they can exactly get attached.”

I have to laugh as I look over at him. “Huh. I feel like I told myself the same thing just a few months ago.”

“Don’t even compare.” He points. “We’re a different story.”

Smiling down at the ground, I shake my head. Then my hand wanders over to his to remind him that we definitely are, and I graze his palm with the tip of my finger.

He lifts his arm in response, slinging it around my shoulders where he pulls me in closer and presses a hard kiss on the side of my head. The move charms me, I won’t deny it and for a moment I bump my face against his shoulder.

“Are you having fun?” He wonders.

“Yes.” I look over at him. “How about you?”

“I would have fun with you–” His arm slips down my back and he sinks his hands into the pockets of his jacket. “–Waiting for the train, dude. You’re like, my favorite.”

Amusement tugs at my cheeks and I exhale a cloudy breath into the chilled late night air. “Oh my god.”

“But tonight, definitely yes.” Then he lets out a deep sigh. “Nights like these make me miss New York though.”

I know what he means. Something about the mood of the city at night. It can’t be matched, even by Miami’s energy. Plus when we’re together, I think it’s easy to forget the demons that once haunted him here.

I admire the quiet street. Christmas lights remain in most of the windows, glowing white from bare tree branches and even though this is my city, I feel the longing too. “I really like this neighborhood,” I notice.

“I do too. Maybe we’ll get mugged or something so that I can quit wishing I lived here.”

“Okay,” I laugh. “That’s a good solution.”

“Hey!” Bianca calls out ahead of us, turning to point toward the corner. “Down here, right?”

“It’s your place, I don’t know.” Noble shrugs and calls after her.

“No. What’s gonna happen,” I tell him as we catch up to them. “Is Vinny’s gonna sing karaoke at this bar and none of us will ever be able to show our face in this neighborhood again.”

“Y'all can keep saying it–” Vinny pipes up, slowing down to turn and address us. “But I’m not singing. I’m a spectator only.”

“You have to!” Bianca insists.

“You have to.” He stops at the door for Mary’s and tugs at the handle, backing up a step to let her in first.

“You both lost,” I reason as I pass through the entrance, retrieving my wallet for the bouncer checking ID’s at the door.

Vinny follows in behind us attempting to argue, “We tied. So officially no one lost.”

“I can’t believe we tied,” Bianca notes.

“Sixty-four–”

Vinny’s quick to brush off Noble’s reminder of their score. “Alright. Damn.”

Navigating the bar, I check out its walls decorated with framed, autographed celebrity headshots who’ve presumably visited along with random neon signs, album covers and vintage looking photographs. We pass through the mostly tame – but noticeably heavy on the guys – crowd and score a high top table for the four of us. 

At the front, a deejay – who Noble observes looks like a slightly more strung out Sammy Hagar – works to secure his karaoke setup, two microphone stands, a screen and the sound system take over the front of the bar.

After a cocktail server gets our drink orders, Bianca hops down from her seat, announcing, “I’m going to put my name on the list!”

With a shake of his head, Noble watches her go. “I hope you guys are ready for this epic setlist she’s planning in her head.” Then he leans onto his forearms on the table across from my partner.  "So Vinny. Did you grow up in New York?“

He nods. "Brooklyn born and raised.”

“What part?”

“Flatbush.”

“Nice,” Noble comments.

Vinny chuckles. “Not really.”

“You always wanted to be a cop?”

“Always?” Vinny considers it. “No. I mean, it was either shortstop for the Mets or cop. And the streets needed me, so–”

“You made the right call,” I remark as Bianca comes back and slides into her seat beside Vinny.

“The Mets are regretting it, but that’s their loss,” he shrugs. “No, I uh–” Vinny starts, peering down for a moment at the table. He picks up the cardboard drink coaster in front if him and mindlessly plays with it. “When I was fifteen, I lost my cousin Emilio. He was shot right next to me hanging outside the basketball courts on our block.”

Propping my elbow on the table, I run a hand along my jawline while I listen. I know this story but it still clenches my gut a little to hear it again.

“He was like my best friend. But. Y'know, in that neighborhood a lot of people felt like there was no way out. And running with a crew was your only choice.”

“You were standing right there?” Bianca asks.

With this sort of far away look, he nods slowly. “After, I just… refused to end up like that. I didn’t want to be another kid from the projects getting caught up in that shit. It’s too easy.”

The bartender returns with a tray of drinks, setting the glasses out in front of us.

“I was lucky. I have good parents,” Vinny goes on. “My dad’s a barber. My mom… she used to work at a clinic. They pushed me, they were on my ass. I wanted to do right by my family. By Emilio. So… John Jay, then the Academy.”

Wrapping up his recap, he laughs softly then gestures to me. “And now I get to make the Commissioner’s son look good and it all turned out alright.”

With a knowing smirk, I nod. “I appreciate that.”

“Your mom…” Bianca starts with some hesitation. “Used to work at a clinic–”

He swallows a hard gulp of his drink and exhales. “Oh yeah. She went back to school and now she’s a nurse,” Vinny explains. “And they moved to Washington Heights.”

“Aww–” Her face lights up and she grins in relief, as if she’d been holding her breath his entire story. “That’s sweet.”

“So there’s the life story nobody asked for,” he finishes.

“Is your dad still a barber?” She wonders.

Vinny leans closer to her, dipping his head. “Hell yeah, girl. Check that fresh cut.”

Reaching over, she lightly scratches fingertips over the back of his neck, right at his hairline. “Your dad cuts your hair?”

He lifts his head to look at her and when he does, I feel Noble bump his leg into mine beside me. I don’t want to watch this exchange, but my attention just sort of helplessly settles on them.

“Yep,” Vinny answers.

She bobs her chin toward the front of the bar. “You ready to go sing with me?”

“Nope.”

“You…” With her face right in front of his, she draws her fingertip just over his cheek but doesn’t touch him. “Have these little freckles right below your eye that I just noticed.”

“Mm-hm.” He hums at her with this look, and a falling gaze that I can see from here.

“And they’re cute,” she tells him.

“I’m not singing.”

Bianca’s tongue teases the edge of her teeth. “Please.”

“Keep trying to convince me, though,” he says. “I like it.”

With a huff, she shoves a hand against his thigh and turns once more toward the table for her drink.

“Say please again.” He motions to himself. “But like, use my name with it–”

“Shut up.” She laughs into her glass.

Noble looks down at his drink, muttering, “Ah shit” before he goes for a hearty gulp.

“You alright?” I question.

“No.”

“It’s one night.” I remind him of his own excuse. “Are you gonna spend all night stressing about your sister instead of having fun with me?”

“I’m not stressing.”

Hitching my elbow on the back of my chair, I pretend to glance around. “Because damn, there’s plenty of guys here–”

“Hey–” He cuts me off and the deep, sharp note of it makes one of my eyebrows jump.

I dig my teeth into my lower lip and bite back a smile.

He looks at me just as the music overhead fades out and the deejay takes to the makeshift stage to get the karaoke underway. The track’s bongos and jingling tambourine notes announce the intro to Freedom by George Michael and the deejay starts off the night with himself as the opener.

“Jesus,” Noble murmurs with a laugh. “You’re right. It’s one night, who cares? But–” Then he brings his glass to his lips for a drink and after a heavy swallow, gestures toward the microphones and announces, “This is gonna be pretty terrible so we need to go ahead and order another round.”

“Yes, I agree.” Vinny points back to him. “I’ll order us some shots.”

Europe Day 13: Paris, France & Updates

NOVEMBER 14, 2013

Alright, you got me. I did it again. Just when I thought I was eventually becoming a better writer, I failed myself again. Well I guess old habits die hard. But remember what I said about this semester getting really intense for me and that I needed to spend every possible waking minute on my studies? That’s exactly what I was doing while I was away from the Internet. You know, I’ve got commitments to myself. I couldn’t be happier that my mid-terms were over. The last two weeks were probably the most difficult time during my academic years by far. I’ve never worked so hard on anything else apart from my business, the little success I have,  because let’s face it I was a lost soul in high school. I had no idea what I’d want to do with my life and thus, I had no motivations or whatsoever to carry on with my studies. That explains why I am naturally empathetic for troubled kids who are in need of guidance. I can relate myself to them and I guess I just wish someone had helped me back then. Despite everything, I actually felt good about it, me. I probably wouldn’t feel the same when I got my papers back. Nonetheless, the satisfaction of fighting for something you want and knowing that it’ll be worth it no matter what is indescribable. 

Same for traveling, you plan, do research and all kinds of tasks and finally the outcome is simply priceless. Trust me, I know exactly what it feels like. Back to school, mid-terms were over, but that just means exams are right around the corner. That’s the only shot I’ve got and I need to make sure that I’m going to fire at the target once and for all. Therefore, I’m asking my you to bear with me in the following days until Christmas. There won’t be very regular updates but I promise you that I do have plans for a Christmas series. It’s a tradition and I won’t miss it.

PS excuse all my incorrect English usage. I’m exhausted now and my brain is barely functioning so I can’t do too much of proofread.     

Here we go again. I don’t particularly like to end things or to see things end. But as mentioned in the previous diary, I was too tried to reject myself this time. Day 13 was the last day of my trip to Europe. I’m not sure whether I can say that I broke my limits because I didn’t even know what my limits were before. Forget it, I should be just proud for even doing this trip in the first place. And pushing myself to go further at the end of the day in Paris? I am hell winning the Ultimate Survivor of the Year. Although, I ought to give some credits to the breathtaking views of this romantic city. Without its charm, I wouldn’t be bothered to lift my eyes for a second. 

This day was mostly sightseeing but then wasn’t as relaxing as it may sound. The more pictures you see, the more places I visited in a day. And judging from today’s amount, it was definitely eventful to say the least. Starting with Moulin Rouge, a private garden and a cafe that might have been the setting of a French movie, we walked around the whole district and discovered a different side of Paris. I also saw a grape garden in the middle of finding my way to the metro. Right after that, we’re back in the center of Paris and hoping maybe we could go to a museum or two before our boat trip on the seine river. And dinner, oh dinner, I went to Bochica, the restaurant I kept raving about in my last post. It’s right next to my hotel - Gardette Park Hotel. I went there for three nights out of my three nights in Paris. The truth. Now you know how good it was. The owner was especially lovely when I asked if they could do takeout for me. The taste scored an A plus without a doubt. I was getting the same fish fillet for two days and a holy delicious grilled fish with a special Asian spicy sauce before I left. Holy mackerel! It was the most delicious food in my entire trip. I don’t know if it’s because of all the meat I’d had for the past 12 days or the fact that I have oriental cultures in my blood. Their fish is gotta be something! It totally deserves more love and likes!  I have the address below, be sure to try it out when you go to Paris. C’est bon!

Last year I was unemployed. To make a long story short, i took a job and was there for less than 2 weeks. I was forced to pray, and listen to scripture that was muslim. I am very understanding in all religions, but do not practice myself. I was very uncomfortable and left. EDD decided that i left without cause and that i did not deserve insurance. they made me pay back what they paid me and 30% more. I did so even though I didn't agree. Now that I am laid off again, I filled out a claim and got a response saying that I was eligible, and they gave me the forms to fill out for the first two weeks, the standard claim forn. I filled it out, and now got back letters saying that i am not eligible for benefits until i have filed a claim for each of the 5 weeks in which i am otherwise eligible for benefits. I haven't received new claim forms. I am assuming that I will get these, and I will fill them out for 5 weeks, and then they will pay me? So I am looking for clarification, after claiming 5 weeks they will give me my benefits? Thanks for your help, to anyone that has gone through this. It is so unfair! I paid them so much, for something I felt I was justified doing, and now I am still being punished! I am currently working a temporary job away from home in another state not my permanent residence (I am living there for the term of the employment). While there I bought another vehicle and registered it in that state and when insuring it moved my other car to the policy not realizing this could cause a problem. Now on my first vehicle, which was registered in my home state, the home state has refused to renew the registration because it carries out of state insurance. However, I also don't own the first vehicle, it is owned by my parents who are a resident of my home state, I just use it and pay the insurance. So unless I am missing anything, It looks like I am basically going to be forced to register that vehicle in a state where I do not have residence or cancel my insurance policy and get insurance for only that vehicle through a provider in my home state. Is this it or are there other options? I'm confused because they let me renew last year even though I had the out of state insurance, but I had switched during that year so maybe they considered me part-time or something.
