Here’s my #quoteoftheday❤️ to celebrate the first day of Black History Month. I spent time last night planning for the month and have 2 friends, @seecarriecolor and @_one_heart_beat_ joining me in this collaborative endeavor 🙌🏼. In any event, #mayaangelouwisdom for the kickoff. Normal is totally overrated! Maya Angelou was a poet, writer, activist, professor, director, actress, and wrote many works over her 50 year career. She was an activist alongside MLK and Malcolm X. Just some of the awards she received: #springarn, #grammyaward and the #presidentialmedaloffreedom. Feel free to save and share with credit!..... #mayaangelouquotes #mayaangelou #crayolachalk #blackhistorymonth2021 #hopeliveshere #cltchalk #chalkthewalk #chalkyourwalk #chalkart #roots #iknowwhythecagedbirdsings #cltiscreative #sidewalkinspiration #teachthechildrenwell #chalkart #sidewalkrevolution #makeitwithmichaels #cltartist #chalkforracialjustice #charlottechalk #blackhistoryisamericanhistory #chalkyourwalk #artwillhealtheworld #vandalettering #amplifymelanatedvoices #itsnotamovementitsarevolution #amplifyblackvoices https://www.instagram.com/p/CKyJaZJs1yd/?igshid=yz0937s70s2f

Many a days I sat with this quote from #desmondtutu and *rebuilt* hope in my heart: " HOPE is being able to see that there is LIGHT despite all of the DARKNESS. " I told myself: There SHOULD be a light that shines in the darkness. Can I LEARN to sit with this darkness until my eyes get used to it? May be someone needs to hear these words on this day that this man has left our 🌎: There’s a destiny waiting at the end of the road. There’s a dawn waiting at the edge of every midnight. #hope #hopeforthefuture #hopefortomorrow #hopeandpossibility #hopeliveshere #lifeafterloss #lifeandleadership #lifeandhealth (at Club Wyndham Grand Desert) https://www.instagram.com/p/CYCMyHQJ1gf/?utm_medium=tumblr

Hello, the last days were very intense. I am grateful to people that were supportive, asking questions, looking for Hope. I had few thoughts, inner dialogue was heavy, all was so loud. Social media were uncomfortable. Anyway cannot process all that happened in the last days. Violence is always a bad idea. Funny how suddenly everyone feel the need to have an opinion and feel the need to chose a side knowing it’s not a side question. Anyway not here to educate you but think twice before spreading messages or informations that can be harmful to anyone. 🖤I tried my best to spread messages of love, respect, and keep distance. 🖤Being a citizen in a land or another is life, and every life is sacred. As said before, I wish Us (all) Better. Jessica. 🕊 #hopeliveshere (at Tel Aviv, Israel) https://www.instagram.com/p/CO2u0cvHwgf/?igshid=1dse1w1fcdi2l

How great is it that the youth can recognize God working in their lives!!? How sad is it that some adults just refuse to acknowledge..they’ve done everything by themselves!!? Doing the Math
By: Craig Mayes
It is impossible to get a definitive number of citizens of NYC who are homeless. We know that there are about 60,000 in city run shelters. We know there are many in private shelters and many who spend the days and nights on our streets, in our parks, riding the subways and rarely find themselves sleeping in a bed. Perhaps the number is 80,000 or 100,000. It’s hard to know. What I do know is that it’s a large number, it’s growing in our city and we are desperate for effective solutions. I also know that last week, the number, whatever it is, dropped by 2. Two less homeless citizens.
Tumblr media
I’ll admit that 2 less is not a very impressive number given the enormity of the challenge. In fact, it is likely that more than a few men, women and children joined the ranks of the homeless yesterday. Those thoughts were running through my mind as we prepared for the Recovery Program graduation at the NYC Rescue Mission. “It’s only 2.”
This thinking dissipated quickly as the evening program began. A couple of powerful realities hit me:
First, I looked around the nearly full auditorium and took inventory of who was present. There were “Wall Streeter” volunteers who help the men write resumes and prepare for job interviews. I saw tutors who work with our men on math, English and computer skills. They even helped one of the graduates prepare for his high school equivalency exam. The room was filled with volunteers from the non-profit “Back On Your Feet,” a group who helps the men in our program get in physical shape by showing up and running with them at 5:30 AM three days a week. I saw pastors and spiritual leaders who pray for the men and provide spiritual guidance on their journey out of addiction. I saw mentors, sponsors and more. And finally I saw my colleagues, staff who have chosen to work tirelessly with the homeless to help them discover hope and life again. What a diverse community coming along side a people that are not a “problem to be fixed”, but rather people to restore.
Second, while listening to the two men give a brief account of their journey in and out of homelessness, it became clear to me again that what matters isn’t the large number that we don’t know how we can possibly help. What matters is each individual life that we can invest in and guide on his or her way to healing and wholeness.
One of our graduates, whom I’ll call Pete, described an incident that was unimaginable. After losing his apartment, job and eventually his family, drugs and alcohol filled the void caused by loneliness and despair as he found himself homeless. One evening, he was sleeping under a tarp on an NYC park bench and was awakened by a commotion. Pete looked out to see a group of young kids who were trying to set him on fire. You could have heard a pin drop in the auditorium as he described what happened and how it made him feel. How much he hurt. How hopeless his life had become.  And yet, here he was in a graduation gown, drug and alcohol free, healthy, hopeful, ready to engage again and give life another try.
One life. That’s all. But every life matters. Last night it was clear that Pete was no longer alone. After he finished his remarks, every person in the room stood to their feet and put their hands together, cheering his success and cheering him on into his future.
By the end of the evening, I was thinking about a number like 80,000 in a different way. To me, what I had experienced was a microcosm of what can and must happen: our community coming together to invest in those in despair and homelessness. In the auditorium, the ratio of supporters to transformed homeless individuals was about 60 to 1. Do the math. With a NYC population of 8.5 million, and a homeless population of 80,000, we have the human capital to impact them all… one life at a time.
