Horatio Spafford was a well known and successful businessman in the 1800's. However, in 1871, he lost much of his wealth in a fire, and then lost his 4 daughters in a shipwreck. Even after all of this, he wrote the lyrics to "It is Well With My Soul."
God gave him peace, even though many terrible things had happened to him. If you have accepted Christ as your personal Savior, you can know that He will always be with you, no matter what you go through. He is faithful in good times and bad times!

One of my favorite hymns, made even more powerful knowing the history of it.
I am convicted every time I sing it. After going through so much tragedy and loss would I have had the faith to write “It is well with my soul”?
I can only pray that God will give me that much strength and faith in Him!

A large collection of fine postcards published by the American Colony, Jerusalem.
144 postcards each with photographic illustrations of Palestine and its citizens. Jerusalem: [c. 1930s].
SHARP, CLEAR, DARK IMPRESSIONS OF RARE AMERICAN COLONY POSTCARDS. The American Colony was founded in 1881 by Anna and Horatio Spafford, who led a small contingent of Americans to Jerusalem to create a Christian Utopian society. Philanthropic in its aims, the Colony engaged in charitable works in Jerusalem in order to alleviate the suffering of the poorest locals, opening soup kitchens, hospitals, and orphanages. Though shunned by the American consuls for their unusual lifestyle, members of the Colony were embraced by the native Jewish and Arab populations for their altruism. From the early 20th century, the Colony began to develop a photographic division for financial support and, during the war, was asked by the Turkish commanders to document life behind the lines in Palestine. A very important collection which highlights the ways in which presentations of Palestinian nationhood were created and conveyed.

1009: (the 24th or 25th of Safar 400; by some calculations, October 18th). Caliph Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah destroys the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, hacking out the church’s foundations down to bedrock.
1311: A General Council of the Church opens in Vienne. Its opening had been delayed, waiting for Knights Templars to arrive, but they were already under arrest.
1555: English reformers Nicholas Ridley and Hugh Latimer are burned at the stake under the government of Queen Mary.
1790: Death of Daniel Rowland, Welsh evangelist.
1861: After four days of torture, Che Jinguang, an elderly Chinese Christian in Boluo, is ordered to renounce Christianity. When he refuses, he is killed and his body thrown into a river, the first-known Protestant martyr in China.
1888: Death of Horatio Gates Spafford, who penned the hymn “It is Well with My Soul.”

I'm sure you've heard of Job and his afflictions before. It is in those times of pain that he made the statement:
"For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:" (Job 19:25).
The story of Job might not seem like much to people and they may not relate to it. To some, it just remains a story. If so, then let me tell you of Horatio Spafford.
He was a very affluent Lawyer that lived in the 1800's. Like Job however, things began to go sour for him. It began with the death of his son of 2 years. He was then ruined financially when a significant amount of his invested wealth went up in flames with the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Two years later, the little left of his wealth also got hit by an economic downturn. He decided to travel to Europe with his family only to be held up at the last minute by problems that arose as a result of the fire.
He soon received a heartbreaking message from his wife after the ship his family was on, had an accident at sea. The message read: "Saved alone …". All four of his daughters, died at sea.
Quite remarkable however, is the fact that it was on his way to meet his grieving wife that He composed the hymn, "It Is Well With My Soul", just as his ship passed near where his daughters had died. Despite all the tumultuous occurrences, he still trusted in the Lord. Despite all his pain, he didn't blame or curse God.
You can learn a thing or two from Horatio. No matter what comes your way or the ups and downs you may go through, forever trust and believe in the Lord. Tell yourself it is well with your soul. All things are working together for your good.

The song was written by a successful lawyer and businessman Horatio G. Spafford during a difficult time of his life when his young son died of pneumonia while most of their business was lost in the great Chicago fire.

One particular day, during the voyage, the captain summoned him to the bridge of the vessel. Pointing to his charts, he explained that they were then passing over the very spot where the Ville du Havre had sunk, and where his daughters had died. It is said that Spafford returned to his cabin and wrote the hymn “It is well with my soul” there and then, the first line of which is, “When peace like a river, attendeth my way..” There are other accounts which say that it was written at a later date, but obviously the voyage was one of deep pathos, and is the clear inspiration of the moving and well-loved hymn. Horatio’s faith in God never faltered. He later wrote to Anna’s half-sister, “On Thursday last, we passed over the spot where she went down, in mid-ocean, the waters three miles deep. But I do not think of our dear ones there. They are safe….. dear lambs”.
