We've been having some issues with our hot water heater so B did a little investigating and decided that the anode rod needed replacing. that post about architecture becoming homogenous across the world is true but it doesn't even mention how DANGEROUS something like that can be. like. humans started building permanent settlements depending on wherever their group ended up, and their individual climate determined what materials they built their shelters out of, how high off the ground/how deep they built them, how far from shore they built them, etc..... like. i'm not an architect i know next to nothing about architecture but you know what pisses me off? brick houses with asphalt or clay tile shingle roofs and a basement with solid brick foundation walls are the ultimate superior option where i live for climate control reasons. they are more resilient to tornadoes (especially the debris being flung around by the tornado so they're less likely to collapse from the debris), the inside of your house is kept cool during hot summer temperatures especially if you have trees and plants for shade outside your home above your roof, the inside stays warm when you heat it up and the heat doesn't readily escape through the brick walls or the roof tiles during the cold extended winter months, and you can open up the windows as you please during spring and fall because it's usually room temperature outside for most of those seasons anyway and then you can save on the heating/cooling bill and all that. like literally all year round. especially if you have a fireplace and a little bit of insulation in all your walls and the roof, you literally will have no heat escape and you won't even need to turn your heater on. the clay/asphalt roof tiles with any type of insulation under them make it so that your roof won't collapse if there's a ton of snow sitting on top of it even for weeks on end. both the material of the shingles and the insulation will stop the cold from seeping in and it'll stay warm even though there's like a foot of snow on your roof. we have asphalt tile shingles that have not been replaced or even touched in 20 years since this house was built and there has never been a single leak of water into this house from the ceiling and by god does it rain something fierce here. there have been tree limbs and rocks and shit flung at the roof during small tornadoes and the worst thing that happened was a few tiles got dislodged and we put them back up after the storm was over.

this is an extremely wooded area. pennsylvania is literally means "Penn's forest country" we are THE state for timber and wood and whatnot. if a tree were to fall on your brick house with clay/asphalt shingles after it was blown over or struck by lightning in a storm, it has a lot better of a chance of staying intact than a flimsy wooden beam house with a thin metal sheet for a roof and some more wooden beams underneath it. your plastic siding panels made to look like wood are all going to crack and crumble and like. explode. the moment that tree hits your house. that tree is coming into your living room. if lightning strikes your house, or your porch, or anything near your house like a tree or your garage or anything flammable, your house could be engulfed in flames and you will burn to death. that literally happened here not even a year ago btw. there was a really bad storm and lightning struck a tree in someone's backyard and the tree caught fire and it eventually fell and crashed through their porch and lit their whole house on fire and to add salt to the wound it landed on their power box outside their house so it exploded everything inside so all their wires caught fire as well and everyone except a little girl died because it happened in the middle of the night. brick houses are fire resistant and so are clay&asphalt tiles and that was a freak ass accident and since the flaming tree hit their power box they probably still would have been fucked anyway if they didn't have a cheap ass modern infrastructure fuck ass house but maybe stuff like that would happen less if we paid attention to what our climates are like and what materials are best for our area........... rip to that family i drive past the lot that their house was on almost everyday and think about them

Didn’t kill my husband.

Very near thing, but I didn’t.

So yesterday I told my husband to watch the baby while I baked the cranberry pie I have been wanting to bake for the last month (and in my exhaustion addled state I put raisins in it too, for some damn reason).  This was an easy task.  They are in the living room, the living room is next to the kitchen, and the baby is sleeping.

When the baby wakes up they’ll need a bottle.  The bottle just needs to be warmed up.

I was wrong.

So the baby started screaming, as baby does when they wake up hungry.  0-world is ending screaming, I swear.  Poor thing, they didn’t wake up full because they didn’t eat in their sleep (though they have fallen asleep eating plenty of times).  Husband comes into the kitchen to pour the hot water for the bottle... and then stays.

He doesn’t take the bottle into the living room to warm up.  He just stays in the kitchen while the baby screams alone in the living room.  And then the baby goes silent.

I have to run out of the kitchen while halfway through chopping an apple to rub the baby’s chest because they were screaming so hard they couldn’t breathe in while screaming, and they had screamed themselves into a bloody nose.

All while my husband continues to still be in the kitchen.

The baby’s diaper has also exploded everywhere, meaning that baby had needed it changed at least once while I was in the kitchen.

My husband came into the living room a few minutes later with me rocking the baby and trying to soothe them, and just hands me the bottle and goes back to fucking around on his phone.

I lost it at him, and told him off, and his response?  Well he didn’t know any better, and he didn’t notice the diaper being an issue.

So I can’t leave the baby alone with him because the baby won’t really be looked after.  Their diaper won’t get changed, and they could die because of a screaming fit.  

Fucking hell.  I had wanted to start running again in the evenings, but now I can’t trust that I can take half an hour to myself while leaving the baby with him, so I’ll have to check my mother in laws schedule to see if she can watch the baby for half an hour in the evenings.  Because clearly her son can’t.

Oh, and on top of everything the air con downstairs doesn’t heat (hasn’t for two years, but me trying to get my husband to have it fixed has gone nowhere), and the kerosene heater is failing and keeps shutting off after ten minutes.  So I’ve pretty much abandoned the downstairs of the house because we’re getting snow this week.  Thankfully my mother in law stepped in on that and a repair guy is coming tomorrow, and if they can’t fix it (it’s an older air con, it may just be cheaper to replace it to be honest, and more cost effective in the long run), we’ll go and get a new kerosene heater.

Because no heat in main areas of a Japanese house sucks.  Japanese houses don’t have insulation and have single pane windows, it double sucks.

I’m so fucking tired.  I was busy holding the baby all day (it was bath day, baby is especially needy after a bath), I didn’t get lunch.  Or much of breakfast.  I ate two pieces of candy and downed a CC Lemon Big.  It’s been an entire fucking week and it’s only Monday.

And the hospital decided to schedule mine and the baby’s appointments on two different days rather than the same day, so I get to have that fun headache twice this week.

Things Japanese hospitals do not have: changing tables anywhere (literally, no changing tables, not even in the baby area), no water fountains, and a culture that views breastfeed as sexual and no way to heat up a bottle or a place to breastfeed in private.

It’s going to be the 2020 of weeks by the end this week, and I still have to bake a Christmas cake.  Thank fuck it’s tradition to just buy KFC for Christmas dinner.

My house was built in the early 50s, and then flipped in 2013 before I bought it in 2017. The flippers did a decent job, but it was obvious that they tried to do things themselves without using professionals for certain things. My dad finished the attic of our house growing up and did the same thing- used some friends, but otherwise did most of the work himself.

We aren't sure what the deal with the pipes were. There was clearly some piping that was original to the house from the 50s, and it was cast iron. There was other pipe that was most likely from the 70s when we are assuming the house was switched from a septic tank to a sewer. We've never found any evidence of a septic tank out back so my guess is that it was dug up a long time ago, especially because there' also no evidence of a leach field out back either, but regardless; when they switched to sewer, they used cast iron pipes. Some of the piping in the basement didn't look super old from the outside but based on everything this month, we are guessing that they painted the old cast iron pipes for some unknown reason. The basement was finished during the 2013 flipping and the pipes weren't exposed, so we don't know why they painted them.

Anyway. The pipes from the bathroom and kitchen were cast iron in the basement, all the way out the foundation and into the yard where they then switched to plastic pipes (our guess is that the town did this when switching to sewer and was unrelated to the house flipping).

The case iron piping was starting to rot and had a lot of sediment and flaking off that was occluding some of the piping. They tried to replace the first 15 feet, which was exposed due to the water damage from the leaky water heater. They had not been able to snake it or pass a camera because whoever did the piping had put an absolute insane amount of 90-degree turns and y-sites into it. However after they replaced that they were then able to feed a camera into the last 10 feet, which was all straight, and out the house into the street. The last 10 feet of cast iron was also rotten; additionally, where the pipes exited the foundation near the driveway, tree roots had invaded the pipes and left only 1/4 of the piping open, the rest full of dirt and leaves and tree roots. So they had to dig up a bout 5-6 feet of the yard to the side of the house and jackhammer into the house foundation to remove the old cast iron, remove the root, and replace with plastic pipe. The pipes were also all 3" diameter, whereas the plumber said the standard is to use 4".

The project manager told me that at this point there is a 10-year warranty on the new pipes they placed, and that they fixed the issues of the multiple turns and y-sites, got rid of the roots (and I actually had that tree removed a couple summers ago because it was in danger of falling on my house and was dying), and that the plastic pipes should outline me and my future children.

So. In all. Ended up replacing the hot water heater, snaking the pipes 3x (all unsuccessfully, or only temporarily successful), replacing the toilet, replacing all of the cast iron pipe with plastic pipe from where it started in the house all the way through the foundation into the yard where it met the plastic piping in the yard, and put in three new clean-outs so that if I do ever have issues, there are better places to snake. One is in the wall between the "finished" room of the basement and the bathroom in the basement, where we had to cut extra drywall beyond that of the water damage, and will be putting a door or access panel. Another clean-out is behind the wall in the laundry room (we had to tear the wall down yesterday with a hammer), and the third will actually be exposed next to the house so it can be accessed from outside.

Not that I wanted any of this to happen, but I guess I am pretty lucky that this issue was discovered now. We think it was probably exacerbated by draining the old hot water heater- the pipes just couldn't handle pumping 50 gallons of water out that quickly. The basement walls had already been partially removed due to the water damage from the old heater leaking. If this issue had waited 6 more months, the walls would have been re-done already and we would have had to tear out and replace the drywall for a second time. At least most of the piping was already exposed.

In total, replacing everything and the excavating and all, it was just over $18,000. So bring on on the overtime. lol.

It was one of the first times I have really felt like life can be easy sometimes.

I had been berating myself and so self-conscious for YEARS and still I couldn’t bring myself to shower more, when I was with Chris. I was convinced that either I was a total piece of shit OR my depression was so bad and constant that I couldn’t function normally.

The truth:

The bathroom at my old house was always freezing. Chris told me “easy fix! Just remember to turn the space heater on an hour before you shower!” So I did that…but then I wanted to know what the deal was with our water heater…..I felt like the hot water wasn’t lasting long enough for me to take a comfortable shower…so he told me the water heater wasn’t “turned up enough.” He then proceeded to wait for months/years (I can’t remember) to fix that. He “fixed it!” But I still ran out of hot water. Next (after waiting again for an undetermined amount of time) he finally took it apart and saw that the coils were completely covered in minerals. So he showed me the before coil and the after coil and explained to me that now that he cleaned them NOW it would be better. It wasn’t. Anyway, at some point over the years I found out our water heater had been installed in 1996 so I began asking him to replace it. He 100% refused, he told me “even a new hot water heater couldn’t do better than this one. You just take too long in the shower.”

So I continued struggling and believing that I had been “spoiled” because I was used to the old apartments having near endless hot water. I had complained to my dad about this over the years…and at one point I remembered that taking showers at dad’s place, when Chris and I were separated, were always fine. So I pointed that out to my dad, but it turned out (because their house used to have three separate apartments in it) that they had an extra large water heater. So I continued believing my loathing of showering was my own fault and that I was simply “spoiled.” This took place over a total of seven years.

The lie:

One month after I left Chris in June of 2021 I caught Chris in his lie. The hot water heater had finally completely broken and flooded the entire basement. He was then forced to replace it.

Trying to cajole me into coming home he bragged about how the new water heater was SO MUCH BETTER.

I was completely shocked and horrified at the sheer size and scope of his lie. When I confronted him, he completely back tracked and said something like, “Well, I mean, it’s not THAT much better…”
