The Paintings of Yannis Tsarouchis
Yannis Tsarouchis is one of a group of twentieth-century Greek artists who portrayed and defined modern Greek identity. A sensual painter influenced by French Impressionism, Tsarouchis is a significant gay artist who painted images of vulnerable men and occasionally strong women.
Born in January of 1910 in Piraeus, Greece, Yannis Tsarouchis initially trained in the studio of Byzantine artist Fotis Kontoglou, an influential Greek modernist who introduced him to Byzantine iconography. He later studied at the Athens School of Fine Art, graduating in 1935, The major influence on Tsarouchis’ work, however, came from a trip to Paris, Istanbul, and Italy in the mid-1930s that exposed him to the bohemian lifestyle and both Renaissance and Impressionist art.
Tsarouchis’ work moved in two main directions: toward the orientalist and sensual, with strong influences from Matisse, and toward the ancient Greek ideal as expressed by the Renaissance and the Baroque movements. In doing so, Tsarouchis played a pivotal role, alongside his contemporaries,  in portraying and shaping modern Greek identity.
Returning to a war-torn Greece in 1936, Tsarouchis become a soldier in the Greco-Italian war in 1940. With a more political and humanist perspective after his service, he  began painting scenes of young men who were preparing to defend their homeland from the rise of Fascist Italy. Gay artist depiction of the soldiers and sailors was controversial; some of his exhibits were taken down by censors, who saw his work as unpatriotic and  degrading to the Greek male image.

Tsarouchis’ paintings of soldiers and sailors he admired captured not only a Greek identity, but also a gay awareness. Transforming Rodin’s bronze statue into an icon for Greek culture, he painted his 1936 “The Thinker”, showing a modern young Greek sitting on a cafe stool, a cigarette in hand, with a faraway look in his eye. Among Tsarouchis’ other paintings are:  the 1939 “Young Man Posing as an Olympic Statue”; “Sailor with Coffee Cup”painted in 1954; and the 1956 “Forgotten Guard”.
Yannis Tsarouchis established in 1949, along with other Greek artists including sculptor Nikos Nikolaou and seascape painter Panayiotis Tetsis, the “Armos” art group which worked to promote Greek traditional painting. In 1951 he had exhibitions in Paris and London and participated in the 1958 Venice Biennale. Gay artist moved to Paris in 1967 in a self-imposed exile to.wait out the years of military dictatorship in Greece.
During this exile, Tsarouchis designed theater sets for productions at Milan’s La Scala opera house, the Greek National Theater, the Dallas Opera, and London’s Covent Gardens, as well as the annual Avignon Art Festival in France. He also designed sets and costumes for films by Jules Dassin and Michael Cacoyannis. After his return to Greece in the middle of the 1970s, he designed an acclaimed operatic set for director Franco Zeffirelli’s production of Italian classical composer Luigi Cherubini’s comedic opera “Médée” at the ancient amphitheater at Epidauros.
Residing in northern Athens at the age of seventy nine, Yannis Tsarouchis died on July 20th of 1989. The Yannis Tsarouchis Museum, an art collection hosted in the artist’s home in Maroussi, Athens, was officially opened in 1982 in recognition of Tsarouchis’ contributions and respect for Greek culture. Upon the reading of his will and testament, it was found that Tsarouchis bequeathed all his assets to the Yannis Tsarouchis Foundation.

Mable Barbra Bennett, 21 almost 22 year old out of dallas texas was somebody that now oozed confidence and collectivness. Never straying far from what was expected of her. She grew up in a hockey loving family, with two older sisters - counting her as the youngest. Her two sisters played basketball and volleyball, while she pursued the arts. She is an avid piano player and quite honestly an amateur professional at this point. She also is a poised painter, and has spent many summers dedicated to her practices. Her family is also life long friends of the Hughes, always meeting up in New Hampshire at their respective Lake Houses. Never daring to stray from any tradition, Mable did. She decided that after he freshman year at University of Souther California for music, she would stay out there every summer until the summer between her Junior and Senior year. Which meant she had missed out on so much, she had missed two summers away from the Lake. Much to her parent's dismay, they obliged and helped her every step of the way. So she was now fully, a Dallas,Texas transplant in the state of California. Her dream home, and a place where she could be exactly who she wanted to be.
Yet, this summer she decided to show up to the lake house unexpectdly. After spending the last few summers growing her practice with some of the best in the country, as well as dealing with much needed mental health therapy- she decided to on a whim to fly out there after speaking with her therapist. She knew she needed to go back at some point, and also deal with her past head on. Lake life is not for the faint of heart, she hated the clicks and the harrasment she recieved from the other kids on the lake. She was quiet, shy and so un competative which made her a avid watcher of games that she was unincluded in. She can't sit here and say she was not hurt, but she also knew she wouldn't be good at whatever game they decided to play. She accepted that, and the Hughes brothers + her sisters always made sure she was always included somehow. But, she spent many days in the house either practicing her piano skills or painting. What started as sad distractions of being left out, turned out to be some of her biggest passions. So when she booked her plane tickets for two days from now, she was nervous. She was excited. She was worried, that they wouldn't like her. The hughes wouldn't see her as there own anymore, like they had previously with her and her sisters. Yet, she knew she needed to face them head on as well as everybody else. She couldn't sit back anymore, and allow life to pass her by - outside of California and Texas.
Mable walked out into the familiar airport, and hurried to grab her suitcase in the midst of summer chaos. Yet, being a once seasoned flyer here she navigated like a pro. Her uber came quicker than expected, so she dashed to the pickup spot and greeted the woman. She thanked her as she took her suitcase, and hopped in the suv. "So what brings you to new hampshire?" The driver questioned, as they pulled out to start there 25 minute journey. Mable shrugged, "Just a quick to visit some family and then i'll be back to California." She answered honestly. The dark haired girl, still didn't have an exact reaosn why she was here - she just booked the plane ticket. Her therapist was happy she did, because she would have never done it otherwise. Yet, remained close by incase it became too much and she needed to get out. The familiar lake homes and trees, she had adored so much dawned the window views. It took her breath everytime, they reached this part of the treck. Transporting her everytime, back to the second summer they had come out here. It was when she was 6 and had met the Hughes family for the first time. Well, apparently the Ellen and Jim had met her as a baby but since they were in Canada for a few years, they hadn't seen them since then. And since then, it's been an unspoken tradition to spend time with them out here. Before the chaos of hockey started back up. And as they grew older, there time in the summer meant more and more. Especially now that two of the Hughes were full fledged NHL"ers. Mable hadn't been to the lake since Jack had been drafter n.1. She hadn't been back since Luke started at Michigan. She had missed big mile stones in there lives, and vice versa. She feared, that all that time missed had ruined there relationship. She always saw Jack as her twin and bestie, and Luke as her younger brother. And Quinn as the older (only by half a year, she always reminded him.) broody brother. One that was quite reserved with her, but she didn't care after awhile. She just focused on her paiting and piano, and moved on. Never, worrying about him again. Her two older sisters; Ella-Mae who was the oldest at 27, and Tabitha 25, were always the ring leader in any and all chaos the boys started. Always, always taking over. Much to the boys dismay, ofcourse.
She sighed, seeing the familiar sign of the lake and felt the butterflies in her stomach grow more and more. Her leg began to shake, and she didn't want to do this anymore. She wished she had stayed away, and had never brought up the idea to her therapist. But it was too late, she was already at the lake house. No cars were in the driveway which signaled that the family must of been down the road at the Hughes or back in the town. She hopped out, taking out her keys and took the suitcase gratefully. She thanked the driver, and walked towards the door. She prayed to god, they had not changed the locks. Or she would have to walk to the Hughes with her tail between her legs, if they were even there. Which by this point, and her family's schedule, they should be. Thankfully, the lock was the same, and she rolled her bag to the living room and heard nothing. Which meant she was alone. She smiled walking towards the french doors and opened them and took in the lake smell. She walked outside, and towards the dock. That had seen many rough summers, back in it's hayday. She took a moment to enjoy the stillness of the lake, and the quietness because she knew, soon enough it would be chaos. She walked back inside, and walked over towards the grand piano they had had since she was a baby. She smiled softly, sitting down, opening up the key cover and tapping one of the keys. Still intune and itching to be player.
She strummed her fingers along, slowly falling into a simple melody. Her eyes shut, humming along and playing into the abyss. Her music, always doing wonders for her. She continued playing, adding in a upbeat tempo and her hand speed increased, going right into a Beethoven classic, that at this point was her staple. She had been playing the concerto for about 10 minutes before somebody tapping her on the shoulder. She flung around, ready to defend herself. But she was met with her older sister, Tabitha who was grinning and dawned confused eyebrows. "Any particular reason why your playing in the middle of fucking new hampshire and not california?????!?!?!" She screamed, playfully wrapping her arms around the younger sister. Mable laughed, as her the older girl pulled her up and started to jump with her in excitment. "I know I know! I have some explaining to do." Mable said stopping, and taking in her sister's demaneor. "God, I missed you girl." She said in perfect Flipino and pulled her sister in for a big hug. "I've missed you too." Mable said softly. "Well, let's get you changed and we can bring you over to the Hughes since mom and dad are there with Ella-Mae and Joshua." Tabitha said pushing her up the stairs. "Joshua??? Awe, ive missed him." Mable said excitedly, about her future brother in law. Tabitha nodded, whipping out her phone and pushing the facetime icon on her older sisters contact.
"What- did you get lost on the way there?" Ella-mae joked, as she picked up the phone. Tabitha rolled her eyes and walked outside to the deck, "No, but I do think Mable Barbra Bennett did." She mused, sitting on the steps. "WAIT!!!!!!!" Ella said jumping up and alerting the family. "Wait!!!!!" She said walking over towards the edge of grass, debating if she wanted to jog over the few houses to see her youngest. "Holy shit- no way she is here." Ella said no grinning, darting her eye sight towards the confused family. "She is, run on over before she leaves." Tabitha, didn't need to say that twice. "Ill be back!!!" Ella said to the family, using her cross country skills to her ability. Jack and Luke peered over confused, before heading back up to the deck as they all asked questions. Ella had made it over there, as Mable had walked outside to greet her. "AHHHHHHH!" Ella said on top of her lungs, being heard from well past the Hughes house. "OH MY GOD!!!" She said jumping up and down, causing Mable to laugh uncontrollably. "YES YES YES!" Tabitha confirmed, joining in on the chaos that consumed the two. "Why they hell are you here? Wait no, I don't care. You're here!" Ella questioned the youngest, who just shrugged. The three sisters had barely saw eachother as it was, always on different schedules when she came back to Dallas for Christmas or Thanksgiving, and the once a year trip to visit the girl at school didn't cover it. "A whim?" Mable said unsurely, but the sisters didn't care. They wrapped there arms around her, just thanking the universe she was back. As they should, they had worried about her when she didn't come back out to the lake. They understood why, but it still made them nervous about the details she had never disclosed. "Let's get you overe there." Ella said pulling the girl down the deck, or atleast trying to. "I don't know." The youngest said unsurely. Her anxiety beginning to rise even more, "I haven't seen them in two years almost three, what if they don't like me?" She rasped, as an anxiety attack began. "Hey look at me." Tabitha said trying to help her breathe. "They want you here, they miss you. The information and stories plus pictures don't cover it. Ellen and Jim miss their third adoptive daughter, Jack misses his twin and Luke misses his favorite sister. And well Quinn, well I still don't know how to read him after all these years." Ella said, half-joking about the last part.
Mable nodded, her heart beat slowly dropping, her sister Tabitha's mimicking was helping her. The words that came out of Ella's mouth, was somewhat comforting. "You got this, no self doubt allowed." Tabitha grinned pulling her into her side, as they walked down the deck and out towards the outer edge of the grass that doubled as a makeshift beach. Ella ran ahead of the two, alerting the family of the impending and long overdue arrival of Mable. Next thing you heard was shout's of excitment, with there mama leaping out of her seat to see her. There mama walked with Ellen towards the edge of the grass, waiting for her. The dads, throwing back another sip of beer, relishing in the fact that there families were complete with the arrival of Mable. Jack and Luke dashed towards the grass as well, with Quinn sitting with there dad's unsure what to do.
"If it isn't mable the munchkin." Jack grinned as they were now in earshot. Ellen gave him a look, but Mable didn't care. It was now engrained in her dna. "Hi mamas." Mable said as the two moms wrapped there arms around the young girl, before she parted to hug luke. "Okay, that's not fair you are this tall. I think you are almost exactly one foot taller now." She joked as they hugged. "And Mable has stayed the same." Jack threw another short joke out, causing the girl to roll her eyes. "Hi Jack, still a bitch after all these years. Huh?" She smirked as they threw there arms around one another. "And after all these years, still the same jokes." Jack said wrapping an arm around her shoulder as they walked up the grass to the deck. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." She said in her perfect- fake southern accent causing Jack and Luke to throw there heads back in laughter. "Okay, cheeky. Keep it up." Jack said shoving her in front of him, so she could greet Jim. "Hi, sweetheart." He said, and she parted smiling before moving over to her dad. He wrapped his arms around her, making her feel more at home then ever. After all, she was always closest to her dad.
"Hi dad." She murmured, as he kissed her head. "Looking like the true californian with that all year round tan I see." He joked as they parted. "Hmmm." She responded, walking over towards Quinn who had stood up from his seat. She smiled softly, giving him a quick stiff hug before sitting in her once, and now designated seat. That no one had sat in since the last time she was here. Josh walked out of the house, surprised to see the young one. She hopped up, jogging over and hugged the confused fiance. "Wait, did I miss a chapter or what." he joked causing everybody to laugh. She rolled her eyes playfully, walking back to her seat in between Jack and Luke. Preparing herself for the impending questions. "So why the hell are you here? Last time we heard anything, you had no plans to be back?" Jack said right out of the gate, causing them to chuckle softly. "Oh geez, lest we forget your punctality." She said resting her head on her propped up arm, giving him a funny face to mirror his. Mable shrugged, "Felt right. Finally had a chance to get away from San Diego. My permanent summer abode, and where I have been studying underneath some of the best pianists out there on the Southern coast." She said honestly, looking around. "Have you joined an orchestra yet?" Ellen asked, and the girl shook her head. "Not yet, I know at some point I will but not yet. But I know, I always have the oppurtunity to do so since I take all the worshops they offer there when I can. Sometimes spending my off days and weekends there, during the school year." She responded, to which Ellen smiled. "Well, from what you mom has been saying- you love it out there. And from what we've seen, it's true?" She questioned and Mable groaned. "Again? With the pictures?" The girl joked to her mom who only laughed. "Yeah, I love it out there. It's exactly where I am meant to be. You can't beat the dry heat." She mused, lacing her hands together to control her anxiety. Something, Quinn took notice of.
Mable walked into the Hughes summer home, looking for the washroom that last time had been decked out in beach theme decor. She found it swiftly again, taking her time to make sure she looked decent before going back out. Her phone buzzed in her pocket, as she walked out. She sighed, seeing it was from her ex- Lucifer. That name should have given it away, a walking red flag. Next thing you know, her phone was buzzing with a call from him. She sighed, picking it up, and making her way to the den that was off from the deck where everybody was. "Stop calling me." She started, as she paced. "What don't you understand about us being done, huh?" She questioned bitterly. "Well, im sorry that I want closure from a three year relationship Mable. Sorry that I want that." He bellowed from his end, causing her to cringe. She rubbed her hand over her face, sitting down. "Maybe if you hadn't acted the way you had, I would have given you a better answer. But no, you were mean Lucifer. Mean. And so, you don't deserve anything else." She said, feeling her lip begin to tremble. Her excuse for the past few years has always involved with painting and piano workshops. That was half the truth, unfortuntly. Her ex boyfriend of three years, Lucifer: the star hot shot of the men's basketball team, had been controlling of her summers. Only having her stay in the San Diego/Orange county area, where he spent his summers with his family. She didn't realize it at first, but he was toxic. Her second summer in, she noticed it. That's when she first began to go to therapy. She didn't realize that he was the reason why she didn't come back out here, that he didn't want her to. He didn't want her around the Hughes brothers who AGAIN were literally her brothers. She wouldn't think for the life of her, to have a crush on any of them. Well, that's half true.
"You were so incredibly toxic dude, I didn't realize until last summer. So no, I owe you nothing." She further explaining herself. "Are you gonna give me any examples, huh? Or are you gonna accuse me of something I know nothing about and bitch to me?" He spat, causing her to shake. Her lip trembled even more, as she felt a tear fall out. "You never..never-" She paused, barely whispering the words she had needed to say for over a year. "You never wanted me to see my family. You always wanted me to be near you in the summers so I wouldn't come out to the Lake. You did that, you told me numerous times and it showed in your actions, Luc." She said barely audiable, wiping her flowing tears. "Because I don't know? They aren't the best people to be around with? Did I ever exclude you from a game of beach volleyball? Did I ever exclude you from any other activity, simply because you were shy or not competative enough? I didn't, they did Mabes." He said, and I shook my head. "But it wasn't like that, they always had me be apart of things. They always did what I wanted to do-" She paused, sobbing. He was right in some twisted way, it was something she had gone over in therapy. But, he was using it to his advantage. She now knew, that he used her past summers to coax her back into his family's summer. Taking precedence, and promising a fun and exciting summer, that included her in everything. It was a way to assert dominance over the relationship, and make her think that coming back out to the lake was a bad idea.
"Yeah, you might be right in that sense, but I know what you are getting at. You think that they are horrible human beings because they were different than me. I chose to not participate, I chose to stay inside to paint, read and play piano. Like, how I decided to participate in volleyball, or fucking fishing with you even though I hate fishing. I willingly stood behind, because I was scared." She confessed, throwing the both of them off. Especially the dark haired boy, in the doorway. She sighed, wiping her tears. "Lucifer, please don't call anymore. I don't want to hear what you have to say or that you think it's best if I come back. Im not going back to you, ever. I am not going to be with you ever again." She said confidently, before ending the call. Her back hunched over, and she covered her eyes in exhaustion. The dark haired boy knocked softly on the wall, alerting the dark haired girl. She jumped up, seeing Quinn in the doorway. She wondered, how much he had heard. She hoped she didn't hear how she confessed that she was scared. Scared to be made fun of, by them. He stepped in, a foot at a time, unsure how to confront the situation. As he stepped closer, he saw the puffy nose, cheeks wet from crying, exhaustion creeping through her eyes. He saw the once-shy, always put together girl that he had secretly liked all these years, for once looking disgruntled and so not shy.
She wiped her undereyes, and sniffled before trying to walk out. "Wait. Are you ok?" He questioned, noticing the tears beginning to pool in her brown eyes. She debated on lying, but she didn't want to put on an act in front of him. She was tired, and simply over having to lie to her family and tell them how wonderful her life in California is, that she has the guy of her dreams and that she loves the idea of being part of an orchestra. Those three lies, crept in her thoughts each day and night. Her mind having enough now, left her with sleepless nights. Long, un fulfilling days in the sun. Quinn saw her shoulders slouch, before she broke out into a sob. He apprehensivly wrapped his arms around her, very confused at what was happening. "I hate my life. I hate it so much. I hate California, I hate my life out there. I- I - I've been lying to my family, when i've been miserable and isolated." She confessed, and he slowly rubbed a hand on her back. "Atleast they know, I broke up with my boyfriend but they don't know why or what he did." And with that, he moved back to study her face. She shook her head, "No he never hit me, I know that's what you are thinking." She said and he nodded, pulling her back in. "But he was mean, he was controlling. He was toxic and wanted the world to think we were a perfect couple, college sweethearts. But we were far from it." She continued on, "And you are probably wondering why I haven't been out here. I've never been honest as to why, always spewing lies." She added, pulling away from him to go sit back down. He followed her to the couch, as she confessed more. "He never wanted me to come here, Quinn. He wanted to keep me in California because he thought you three were mean, evil spirited and purposly isolated me as a kid." She paused, pulling some hair behind her ear. "But we weren't." Quinn retaliated, and she nodded. "I know that, and you were never mean to me. None of you guys. He doesn't believe me when I say I chose to keep to myself. He doesn't believe me when I say I enjoyed the solitude or doing my own thing, watching you guys at all hours. Because, he saw a different side of me. He always included me any game or activity during the summer. And so, he doesn't believe that as a kid I was vastly different. I changed a lot when I went to college, as college students usually do. And so, he saw a calm, collected and confidant Mable that you guys never saw. Well, the confidence part atleast. So when I took part in beach volleyball, I had fun doing it which was a stark differance than when we were kids. When I went for hikes, it was different than when I was a kid. And he's using the little information I had given him about you guys, throwing it back on me and telling me I shouldn't be around you because you guys are the one's who are toxic. Ironic, because he's the one that is." She finished, "Well he sounds like an ass." Quinn exclaimed, causing the sad girl to laugh. In agreemant, she nodded. She clasped her hands again, as her anxeity grew. Quinn noticing once again.
"Sorry uh, nobody really knows about all that besides my uh therapist." She sheepishly said, looking at the floor. He softly smiled, "Well thankyou for opening up to me, Im sure it hasnt been fun lying to everybody." He said and she looked up at him, and nodded. "Yeah, very." She smiled back before standing up. "Where are you going?" He questioned, honestly never wanting her to leave his sight ever again. And then potentially disappear for another two years. She grinned, "I think we have a frisebee competition to put on." She said walking out towards the back yard. You got it Mae!" He said jogging up to her, grabbing her, throwing her bridal style and running outside with her. "Frisbee-now!" He yelled out to the sibilings and they hurriedly got up to start the competition. Jack and Mable on one, Luke and Ella on one with Quinn and Tabitha on the last. Mable and Jack started off with the first win, every catch was 2 points unless it was a far or difficult one- that was 3. They beat Luke and Ella. mable stuck out her tongue to Luke as Jack lifted her up and spun her around. No longer a grudge for any of them, to have her on there team. She was somebody new, exciting and very competative. Her and Jack did there secret handshake from back in the day which now was no longer secret. "We got this J." She said starting to get into position to run after his throws. Her short but long legs, carrying her far landing the first point. "Who'd a thought munckin got skills?" He said as she threw it back to him. "Fuck off." The dark haired girl hollered causing everybody to laugh. Jack threw it again, and again and again. Beating Quinn and Tabitha by a long shot, which ended with Quinn getting his ass beat by Tabitha. Jack ran up to Mable and picked up up, as they screamed in excitment.
Luke finally got Tabitha off of Quinn, and they took part in the competition winning dance fest going on from Jack and Mable.
Mable was back, better than ever.
Mable looked at the clock, it was now 4:30 in the morning and she could no longer sleep. She huffed, throwing off the comforter and getting out of bed. She threw on a two piece suit, and headed out to the lake with a towel in hand. She smiled, looking up at the stars that were beginning to lift. After a few minutes of taking in the sky, she dropped her towel near the end of the grass before walking into the lake. She had missed late night swims, and morning ones. Inch by inch, her 5'3 stature taken away by cool water. She began to swim out towards the middle between her family's dock and the one in front of theres. She moved over to her back, looking up at the sky and allowing the soft waves to move her every few minutes. She had missed it here, she had missed the warmth of Ellen, the Cheeky sassy side of Jack, the lovey dovey Luke (which made sense with the three girls, having the most influence on him), Jim's dad jokes and Quinn's mysteric, very moody of a personality. She was appreciative that he had stayed with her, allowing herself to be vulnerable and honest with him. It had meant the world, to both of them. She sighed, turning back over and began to do breaststrokes towards the Hughes house. If she was right, Quinn would of been awake by now- getting ready for his morning run. Like her, Quinn too could not sleep very well. He couldn't believe she was back, and wanted to spend as much time with her as he could. She was intoxicating in the very best way. And now that she was out of her shell? Unedinably radiant, and ever beautiful. Quinn walked out to the dock, stretching and taking in the morning sky before heading out for his run.
"Lookey here, if it isn't mr.brood himself." Mable said, pulling him from his thoughts as she swam to the dock and stared up at him. He smiled, before sitting down. "Don't you have a run to get to?" She teased, raising an eyebrow. He smiled, looking down. "Im glad you know my schedule, ms.mable." He joked and she giggled. "I know a lot more than you think Quinny. Think of all the times I "read" outside as a kid, you don't think I didn't pick up on anything?" She smirked floating on her back once again. So he too was not the only one that looked, that held a stare longer than he should have,or listened in on conversations that had nothing to do with him. "Besides, I always had to make sure Jack was not pulling anything out of his ass about me." She added causing him to chuckle. She had missed that laugh. "Right, cuz that was something that he never did." He mused, causing her to laugh along. "Defintely the opposite of me as a kid." She mumbled, thinking he couldn't hear her- but he did. "That's why you got along so well together, adding even more to the unspoken bond between you two." Quinn started, "Thick as thieves, with you being the most sneaky." He finished and she nodded looking back up at him. "Yeah, you shouldn't have ever underestimated my quientess." She mused, "Oh I didn't dont worry." He responded. "That's how you figured us all out. A skill that allowed you to get the most info from us. I applaud you, I really do. It takes much dedication around us." He joked and she shook her head smiling. She swam over to the dock and hoisted herself up onto the dock. Quinn watched as she did so, taking in the newly exposed stature. She had changed a lot, since he last saw her. Her bathing suit, only adding to that testimony.
"Well, im glad somebody noticed." she said shoving him playfully. "I did, always." He said softly, and she pretended she did not hear it. "You know, I never did tell my parents but you wanna know who I stumbled upon in L.A?" She grinned, and he looked over at her. "Who?" He questioned. "Somebody with the last name Brisson..." She trailed off, and his eyes grew wide. "Turns out they are pretty big deal in L.A hockey." She grinned, "Didn't care for the oldest but eh, they were cool." She mused and he chuckled. "You met them? When?" He asked, a little too excited at 5 am, for Mable's liking. She laughed, "Before I came out here. I went to Manhattan beach with some friends and they like came up and wanted to talk to my friends." She explained, "Brendan defintely got my friend's number while Jordan got an instagram. He was shy and, I did not expect him to be able to get one." She joked and Quinn laughed. "Safe to say, nothing ever happened between him and my friend, but Brendan and my friend Lexi hit it of well." she added. "That's funny, small world." He mused and she nodded. "Well, if I am correct- you are ten minutes late to you run." She smirked before diving back into the lake. "Maybe, if youre lucky, I might meet you at our secret hiding spot around 2." She grinned before swimming back, not bothering to get a verbal response out of him. They already knew the answer.

Nick Goss (b. Bristol, 1981) is an Anglo Dutch painter whose (essentially figurative) paintings suggest apparently contradictory readings. On one hand there is the recognisable specificity of objects and environments rooted in factual, documentary reality: a photographic starting point perhaps, or an archival image offering an intensely palpable sense of place or experience.
On the other there is always something more liminal at play - an uncertainty and otherness that never quite explains itself. It is in this ambiguity and sometimes dreamlike strangeness that these images reveal their power and presence. They have an unreliable relationship to time, being connected to memory and a kind of nostalgia, and yet existing precisely in their own moment. They are built slowly in thin layers of often muted pigment over screen-printed images, with small shifts of focus that simultaneously coalesce and fragment.
At times they slide towards abstraction in form, but never in mood, which almost always remains resolutely tangible.Nick Goss has exhibited widely in Europe and America and has work in many distinguished collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Dallas Museum of Art; Cleveland Museum of Art and the Zabludowicz Collection, London. Recent exhibitions include: The Undercurrents at Mathew Brown, Los Angeles; Margaritas at the Mall, Contemporary Fine Arts, Berlin; Nine Mile Burn at Josh Lilley, London and Morley’s Mirror at Pallant House Art Gallery. His first exhibition at Ingleby will open in October 2023.

Many years ago, almost another lifetime, I worked for a cable company in Dallas TX doing installs and disconnects. It was a job filled with extremes. You could find yourself in a living room hooking up someones cable with a half naked housewife lounging on her couch, eyeing you like a T-bone steak. Or else find yourself twenty feet off of the ground, hugging a telephone pole, with a Rottweiler waiting patiently for you to come down -for lunch. One day I found myself doing disconnects in a community that I had never been assigned to before. It was an extremely wealthy area of Dallas called Turtle Creek, where all of the properties were valued in the millions. The kind of homes that make you painfully aware of just how much money you don’t have. Mansions that take up acres, with giant trees and manicured landscapes. I drove up and onto a large property in the middle of this area, that had an older style estate on it. Most of the older homes had been sold at one time or another, then torn down to build larger and more expensive dwellings for the wealthy elite in the north Texas area. Somehow, this one was still standing- like a black and white photo, resting among the ostentatious. I knocked on the door, and was greeted by a very elderly woman who kindly invited me in, encouraging me to sit while she made tea for us and insisting that we have the tea before discussing anything further.   I sat there looking around the wide living room, with its vaulted ceilings, and its old ornate crown moldings. There were beautiful oil paintings of every sort, and antique furnishings filled the space to perfection. She eventually returned with a tray, and the tea, prompting me to take a cup. We sat quietly sipping tea for a few minutes. After a short while she sat up and asked if I would be very long with the disconnect of her cable service. I replied that it would only take moments. She seemed disappointed. I could sense that this sweet lady was lonely and looking for an excuse to visit, so I began asking about her lovely home and the beautiful furnishings. This brightened her up immediately, and she began to talk about her home, about her family, and eventually about the fact that she was the only one left. Her husband had died young, and they had never had children, so it was just her living in the home. She had decided to move into an assisted care facility because she could no longer keep up with so large a place. She confided in me that she wanted to have other people around to talk to and play cards with and  that living alone was something she was unwilling to carry on with. I eventually excused myself and walked around back of the property to disconnect her cable service, and when I returned she was waiting for me at the door asking me to follow her. She wound her way through the house and eventually ended up in a room that had obviously been used by an artist -a painter. There was a large easel with an empty frame on it, painting supplies everywhere, and numerous paintings lining the walls and floor. As I looked around she spoke about her art, and her love of painting, with the main subject being- flowers. The room looked like a flower shop with colorful blossoms everywhere. “Pick one out” she said. “ I want you to have one”  I wasn’t sure how to respond so I just stood there looking around. She gave me a little nudge with her cane and said “I’ll not let you leave without some of my flowers” and gave me another nudge to emphasize her words. I found a small watercolor painting of some Azaleas and picked it up to examine. She seemed very pleased with this, saying that it was one of her favorites. When I saw the date on the bottom edge of the painting it read 1897. I looked at her and said “I don’t want to be indelicate but, how old are you?”  She burst out laughing, and then explained that it was painted by her mother. When I tried to put it back she stopped me and said “It was meant to be, sometimes the portrait, picks you” I have thought about her often over the years. Her flowers still live on my wall. Her name was Rose.

LG Pinkston High School in Dallas, Texas was designed by Alta Architects and built by Rogers O'Brien Construction. The 226,000 square foot, 3-story DISD school houses an early college wing, a performing arts auditorium, two gymnasiums that also serve as community storm shelters, indoor and outdoor dining, and full athletic fields, all of which surround a large central courtyard where performances and outdoor classes can take place. It features various green technologies developed through consultation with a climatologist.
One of the highlights of the space is the Youth and Family Center which is run in cooperation with Parkland Hospital providing health and social resources to the community of Dallas. The design of the school was inspired by the 101-year-old Cuban-American painter Carmen Herrera. It brings a language of color and strong lines, highlighting the colors and identity of the school and its Viking mascot.
Additional consultants on the project were Pape-Dawson Engineers, Datum-Rios, KAI, WJHW, and JMK Consulting.

Dear friends, with this post published by Retrospect Studios of Kavita Maharaj, a very talented painter who painted the Spock picture that I bought, I want to offer my homage to Leonard Nimoy !
Carissimi amici, con questo post pubblicato dal Retrospect Studios di Kavita Maharaj pittrice di grande talento che ha dipinto il quadro di Spock che io ho acquistato, voglio offrire il mio omaggio a Leonard Nimoy !
The words, dedicated to me, of the talented painter Kavita:
"VERONA, NORTHERN ITALY
The large size “Into The Unknown” print in its new home in Verona, Italy! It’s new owner (Chiara) asked to include her thoughts here ❤️🖖:
Dearest Kavita, I finally picked up the framed Spock painting from the art gallery and posted it. I am happy to be able now to contemplate, in all its beauty, the work you made in the room of my house which my dad is renovating for me.
Tumblr media
For long time I wanted to buy a print of yours on Spock, but only after seeing your painting "Into the Unknown" did I realize that it was exactly what I was looking for.
This work, more than all your others, all beautiful, has three wonderful qualities: it is incredibly alive, it has the touch of the indeterminate, it has the gift of being in the making, and all this makes Spock appear to rise, move, take life from yours essential painting, from the drops of color which seem to drip as if you were still painting. It is, as the title describes it, entering the unknown, like Spock who seems to make an effort to exist and resist in an unknown reality and all this causes a strong emotion.”
Le parole, a me dedicate, della bravissima pittrice Kavita:
"VERONA, NORD ITALIA
