Born to Texas farm workers with Mexican ancestors, Leopoldo Tanguma was inspired by the Chicano civil rights movement—El Movimiento—sweeping the nation in the ‘60s and ‘70s and in 1973 painted his most iconic work, the 240-ft "Rebirth of Our Nationality" in Houston's East End. Growing up nearby a young Mario Enrique Figueroa, aka Gonzo247, was mesmerized by the work and inspired to legitimize graffiti and to use art "to create, inspire, and uplift." Gonzo went on to found @AerosolWarfare as a safe space for graffiti artists to exhibit their work and in 2018 was recognized by the city for his work promoting the beauty of Latino culture. Gonzo believes Houston is under-appreciated and in 2014 he worked with @RedBull to create this work on Chartres St on the side of the Houston Graffiti Building.  @gonzo247/

Made it out to the #houstongraffiti area yesterday evening with the family. Had a lot of fun and got to see some amazing artwork! Also provided a lot of inspiration and ideas for the book I am scripting. I have quite a few ideas for setting some scenes in this area! I spent several years practicing with my bad just down the street from this location. And I have spent many more years visiting the local bars and destinations in the area. Can't wait for everyone to read what I have been writing. More importantly, I can't wait to find an artist excited to draw what I see! “Saw this beaut high in the sky and wondered what it was. The city of Houston have worked with local artists to put their work on billboards. This one is by @capdavjon and I just love it! | There are lots of murals around the city and I can’t wait to check them out. But first of all there’s still SO much life admin to get sorted out this week.We found a great house at the weekend and also have a home finding tour this week arranged by Craig’s work. We aim to finish the week with a permanent home and hopefully a new car! That would be quite an achievement.My drivers ed is coming along, the practical side more than the robot app, which I’m only 53% complete.
