All right, this may be a stretch, but I’m genuinely curious. What do you think a normal day in the life of Hawks looks like? From dawn to dusk, what is that birb boy up to outside of hero work or while he’s doing it?
I’m getting so many Hawks requests, it’s great!!! This is basically what I think a “standard” day of work looks like for him without interviews or appearances and other “disruptive” meetings. Basically, a typical Tuesday.
5:00am - First alarm goes off. He knows he should get up, but just five more minutes...
5:15am - After several “five more minutes” he actually shuts off his alarm and browses his social media feed. He’s so bleary-eyed he doesn’t really know what he’s looking at, but he sees a couple of cute cat videos which help him get moving.
5:30am - Morning routine begins. Standard hygiene stuff like shaving and brushing his teeth, etc.
6:00am - Wing maintenance begins. It’s a pain, but he has to keep his wings and feathers healthy. He has a special brush and oils to go over each feather. Thankfully he can also send out feathers individually rather than needing to reach back to try and reach them all. At the end it’s time to get dressed with the clothes he laid out beforehand.
7:00am - Breakfast. Nothing particularly fancy, just toast, eggs, and coffee. Maybe a banana if he hasn’t forgotten to buy them. If he’s feeling especially hungry he’ll make some instant oatmeal/porridge.
7:45am - Off to work. He might get more time depending on how the commute looks that day, but he prefers to be at the office a little early and isn’t supposed to fly off hours.
8:45am - Arrive in the office, greet the other early commuters and sidekicks, second cup of coffee to get into the zone.
9:00am - Morning meetings and agenda reviews. Just to touch base with how his day has been planned.
9:20am - Patrol officially starts. The agency itself works in shifts so even when Hawks isn’t working himself someone is always patrolling and gathering info. With the combined tips and intel they’ve gathered they round up criminals and generally help civilians until lunch -leaving the sidekicks in the dust cleaning up behind him as he goes.
12:00pm - Lunch! Depending on his momentum he might cut into his own lunch a bit but usually stops to give his sidekicks their break. Grabs a chicken bento from a convenience store and enjoys the quiet company of the pigeons on some rooftop. Knows he shouldn’t feed them, but can’t help it. They’re just so cute!
1:00pm - Back to the office for incident reports. His agency has a system to keep paperwork time down as far as they can which usually means body cams for the sidekicks and an audio log for him to record important details ahead of time to just fill in forms later. He would wear a body cam, too, except his erratic movement and flurry of feathers makes details hard to make out. There’s almost always witnesses and CCTV footage to use, though, so not much to worry about there.
3:00pm - Second patrol. Sometimes the agency mixes up when patrols start, stop, and overlap to try to catch would-be criminals looking to game the system off-guard. It’s usually not an issue with how much they vary patrol patterns, but occasionally they bust some big ones!
4:30pm - More paperwork. Most are able to get it done well before end of day, but he usually stays past to do any additional research or catch up on past work.
5:30pm - If he has a lead or mission to follow this is the time he goes covert -albeit, still in uniform - to snoop around. This isn’t the time to be hauling in any perps unless he sees things going down and no other hero to help out, but he’s still very much active. Either the most or least productive part of his day depending on what’s going on.
6:30pm - Finally at home or on his way. He’s usually stops by the store on the way back to pick up groceries and dinner for the day. Depending on how tired he is, he may just skip making dinner and grab another meal at the store.
7:30pm - Food in his belly, shoes off his feet, in his own home - time to finally unwind with a shower and a bath! Time spent there varies, but he usually soaks for at least 30 minutes. Might put on a podcast or audiobook to listen to or MAYBE use that TV screen installed there, but usually likes the quiet with just the ambient noises of the bath.
8:45pm - Prep for the next day and night hygiene - putting in grounds for the coffee maker, setting out clothes, brushing his teeth, etc.
9:00pm - FINALLY some free personal time! He might catch up on a series he likes, read a book, or browse on his phone again, but he’s usually pretty out of it by this point. As fast as he moves when out and about, he’s pretty slow in his own home. Probably a good thing if he’s relaxed enough there to not be in a rush.
10:00-10:30pm - He doesn’t want to, but he SHOULD go to bed. He’s also usually exhausted so he plugs in his phone and lets himself scroll until he’s out cold, which usually doesn’t take long, and dreams of the weekend. He doesn’t usually get a full 8 hours every night, but he tries to.

tumblr survey no. 4
1. What is something in your life that you feel hopeful about right now? My potential as a community-level social worker. I have been loving my practicum so much, and I feel so valued there. It is doing wonders for my professional confidence, and I feel that my experiences I am currently having here are going to serve me so well for my future career.  2. What was the last thing you worried about that turned out better than expected? Moderating workshops at BLC last weekend. I am not great with public speaking, did not understand the moderator role very well, and barely got an orientation to what was expected of me but it ended up being actually fairly interesting and a good networking opportunity.  3. Name somewhere you are planning on visiting in the near future? I am hoping to go Jasper at some point in the new year to visit my Danish friend who is moving here for the winter season to teach snowboarding.  4. How often do you go grocery shopping and how much food do you usually get in one go? It depends. I have been a lot better at making my own meals this semester, because I spend less time at Famoso. I am still not great at planning for like, a week or more’s dinners. I tend to go to the grocery store, buy what I need for a single recipe, and don’t get anything else.
5. What is a meal you eat extremely often? Or do your meals & food choices vary a lot? Porkchops with tzatziki, steamed broccoli and rice. Cheap and easy to prepare and fills you up.  6. When was the last time you felt unable or unwilling to speak your mind to someone? Honestly...... I do not tend to hold back in this regard.  7. What was the last thing you changed your mind about? My respect and appreciation for people in my life who have assumed certain leadership roles.  8. Who was the last friend you saw, and what did you do together? I saw Maeghan, Madison and Cayley last night. We had what we affectionately call a “blob hang” which is basically where we all get together at someone’s house after our respective work days, drink wine and bitch.
9. Who tends to show up in your dreams? Do you ever wonder if you appear in anyone else’s dreams? Whoever I am sleeping with at a given time. I’m sure I do. Dreams are weird that way. 10. What is something you wish you could say to someone who is no longer in your life, or something you wish they could know? Sometimes I do wish I could talk to Zara and ask her what went wrong with her friendship to all of us in high school/what the unspoken words between everyone are. I don’t think there is anything I wish she could know. She probably knows most of it.  11. Instead of flat earth, what do you think of the simulated earth theory, that we’re basically all just a giant computer program or virtual reality? I used to think about this when I was young. I would entertain the idea in my head that we are all just spectacles in a lab somewhere that is part of the “actual” universe. Obviously, we have no evidence for this. It’s just funny to think about.  12. What worries you most about your future? That my lack of clinical experience in practicum will prevent me from getting well-paying jobs in social work, and that changes in our political climate in Alberta and Canada will see an even further tightening of the social services/not-for-profit sector that forces a lot of budgets to get cut and less jobs will be available.  13. What is something you do to feel better when you’re scared? Scared? Um. That one’s kind of hard to beat.  14. Who do you feel you can count on the most in life? Is there anyone you wish you could count on more? My family.  15. What makes you trust someone? When was the last time someone broke your trust? Hm, I don’t know how to really explain it. I just feel like I can with some people like if I feel comfortable talking to them. 16. When was the last time you shared a secret with someone, and how did they react? What even are “secrets” anymore? I told my friends this morning about a sexual experience I had recently that I thought I might keep secret but they just laughed and we moved on.  17. Are you more likely to give advice or to ask for it? I do both fairly equally, I think.
18. When was the last time you felt totally lost, figuratively speaking? How about literally? The last time I felt totally lost was shortly after I finished my degree requirements for the journalism program and had to apply for jobs. I was not used to not being in school, I had no idea what I was qualified to do, I wasn’t taking care of myself, and I needed to pay my bills. It was awful and very stressful. In terms of literally being lost - god, I don’t know. Maybe when Sydney and I were drunkenly trying to find the train station downtown on Canada Day. LOL.  19. In what ways are you emotionally strong? In what ways are you emotionally weak? I am emotionally strong in that I can handle/actually often instigate confrontation of issues. I like things to be out in the open, being discussed and addressed as they come up. I am emotionally weak in that when I begin to like someone I become extremely reliant on their affection to build up my own self-worth, and I do not handle rejection or extreme criticism well.  20. What is the strangest book you have ever read? How did you find out about it? Maybe A Scanner Darkly. Connor told me about it.  21. Do you prefer to watch movies or tv alone or with other people? Is there anything you refuse to watch alone? I’d much rather watch alone unless it’s a fun ass show like Queer Eye.  22. What was the last thing you broke? How about fixed? The zipper on these boots I bought from H&M! FUCK, I’m so mad about that actually. They are the perfect boots. The last thing I fixed was... I cannot recall.  23. Is there a sign or symbol that means a lot to you for whatever reason (eg. seeing certain animals or birds, 11:11 or other repeating numbers, syncs, butterflies, hearts in nature, etc)? Not really.  24. Do you have any personal ghost stories or paranormal experiences? No! So lame. I’m sure if I thought harder about it, I could conjure something up (pun intended) but I am actually REALLY easily scared and if I start reading about this kind of thing too much before bed or something, I’ll get like... sleep paralysis or some shit like that. It’s not good. My mind is weak.  25. What do you get complimented on the most? My handwriting, my eyes and my hair.  26. What is something unusual that you find attractive? Someone tall and super super skinny.  27. What time do you tend to eat your first meal of the day? And your last? The current routine begins with a cup of earl grey tea and 2-3 fried eggs with salsa around 8:45am before I catch the train to go to practicum and/or school! Last meal - who knows. Between 7 and 8pm.  28. What was the subject of the last video you watched? LMAO it was like a history of Kelly Ripa and Mark Counsuelos’ relationship.  29. When was the last time you traveled out of town, and where to? To Korea! In May.   30. How would you describe your overall aesthetic? I literally wear the same outfit every day. Black tights, black skirt, some kind of coloured top and black boots. Hair that is never done and bags under my eyes and giant backpack. Done & done.

Relationships: Living the Single Life (in a Relationship)
Hola, from Tulum! Having the BEST time on this girl's getaway (follow my adventures here) and it's perfectly fitting for today's relationship post. For those of you that are currently in one or have been in long term relationship you will know EXACTLY what I’m talking about. Remember those days of working out because you were trying to impress the guy next door (or yourself), actually getting sh*t done and being proactive? Well I do; I call it the SINGLE hustle. There are so many amazing things about being in a relationship but one thing that is a double-edged sword is being "comfortable."
Instead of waking up early and going for a run, Andy and I just lie in bed for an extra 30 minutes. (team cuddle!) Instead of cleaning the kitchen, going to the grocery store and running three errands on a Saturday we get a late start, take a stroll to Starbucks, grab lunch and lay by the pool. But if Andy's out of town I'll schedule a 7am Pilates class, meet a girlfriend for a smoothie, go to the grocery store, write a blog post, and start on laundry all before 12pm! I was reminded of this a few months back when I was house sitting / watching my younger sister at my parents in the Valley. That week of playing mom I woke up at 5:45am, drove my sisters to school, and worked from 7am to noon at a local Starbucks (that freelance life). I truly got more done in that amount of time then I do working 9 to 5 at home AND still had time to do a blog shoot, make it to my sister’s soccer game, and cook dinner for the fam. The MOM hustle is real - hah!  But Andy also told me during that week, he woke up early every day and ran along the beach before work…which literally never happens. Why?!
We're comfortable. Cuddling always outweighs the gym, right? Maybe we feel like we can be lazy with our significant other because we know there are 2 of us to get things done? ie: I'm not going to take the trash out because he can.... trash sits there for 2 days. No joke, Andy and I have been trying to plan an Europe trip for TWO YEARS. Meanwhile, I can (and have) easily planned an International trip for myself in 1 day.
I know I truly feel so great/ comfortable in my relationship that my no makeup, athleisure outfit, hair a hot mess days have just become totally acceptable.  BUT when I do get fully dressed I feel 10x better about myself and what I can accomplish in the day. When I push myself to go to pilates and eat healthy, it transforms my day as well. When I travel by myself, plan every minute of the trip FOR ME, and navigate through public transportation I come back with this feeling of "I can do anything!" As women, when we’re alone we feel empowered, self sufficient and successful when we manage to do everything on our own. You know what they say:
If you're not uncomfortable, you're not growing!
How do we implement this into our everyday life WITH our person and keep that hustle going? Here are a few ideas I have, let’s try to tackle these together!
1. Make a Weekly Calendar - Put 5 tasks you want to accomplish that week as if it were a meeting for work you wouldn’t be able to miss. Or a hair appointment – we all know you would never reschedule that, so why not make returning a package that’s been sitting by your door for a month a priority too?
2. Hold your Partner Accountable –  Andy and I try to discuss our weekly goals on Sunday nights - they can be related to tip #1. All goals are actionable (ie: I'm going to go to the gym 3 times this week or I'm going write and post at least 3 blog posts this week). Whatever it is, make them actionable. Saying "I want to eat healthier" isn't really cutting it. What will you do to eat healthier? Cook dinner twice a week? Only have salads for lunch? You get what I'm saying! Try to have check-ins every once in awhile to see if you're on track (this is where we always fail!). Another idea: BOTH set an alarm and wake up 1 hour earlier 3 days a week and see what you can accomplish in that time frame.
3. Fill a Day – One day a week, even if on the weekend, JAM pack a day. We seem to always get more done when we’re already super busy and not lounging in our PJ’s until 10am. Wake up early, tackle your to-do list, hit the gym, and then treat yourself to a date night dinner to celebrate being productive.
Alrighty, back to the beach for me! Can't wait to share some amazing looks and travel guides from Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
Psst.. don't forget to peep my previous relationship post about balancing work + personal life especially when we are digitally connected 24/7.
