“Geralt?” the man asked and Geralt suddenly remembered the cornflower blue eyes from his trek that morning.

“Jaskier?”

“Ah yes, hello! Sorry. Umm.. well Triss is in the shower and then her phone started ringing and I thought maybe I could take a message?” Jaskier stammered out and Geralt could practically see the way the younger man pulled at his hair.

It was odd. In his videos and interviews he was confident, charming, charismatic. He would never have imagined the nervous young man from this morning could be the same person as the man in the posters that were plastered all over Ciri’s bedroom walls.

“There’s an answer machine,” Geralt said bluntly.

“Shit, right. Yes, well… I. umm. I might have sort of seen your name come up on the I.D.?”

Geralt snorted. How the hell was this man a celebrity? He couldn’t imagine Yennefer getting on well with him either. What the fuck had she seen in him that was worth her time? She was ruthless with her clients and incredibly picky. She didn’t waste her time on people that wouldn’t bring her success.

Then again, Geralt had heard Jaskier’s music. He knew the way Jaskier’s music could enchant the soul. They were catchy tunes but they had heart. There was always at least one song per album that really broke all expectations of what pop music was, something heartbreaking and beautiful. Jaskier’s music made you feel as if you knew him. It was enticing. Geralt wasn’t immune to his charms either, but… that was Jaskier the celebrity.

Jaskier the person seemed to be a bit of a mess.

Geralt wasn’t sure what to think. He shook his head and smiled, grateful that Jaskier couldn’t see him, as he thought about the blinding smile Jaskier had given him that morning as if he hadn’t just pulled fucking bread from his trousers.

“I’m umm, well I’m. I’m sure Triss won’t be long, Geralt,” Jaskier rambled from the other end of the line, and Geralt realised he still hadn’t said anything.

“My daughter is supposed to stay with Triss this afternoon whilst I’m teaching.”

“Ciri?”

Geralt smiled. Jaskier remembered her name. Ciri would be over the moon if she knew. “Yeah, that’s her. She’s a bit of a fan, is that going to be alright?”

“Ooh right, I see,” Jaskier hummed, trailing off and Geralt waited for the musician to answer his question. “Oh yes! Sorry, yes of course. I would be delighted to meet her! Although perhaps you should drop her off a little earlier so she can get used to the idea of me being me before you leave.”

Geralt chuckled, Jaskier was rambling again. “Thanks, Jaskier.”

Jaskier let out his own laugh. “Great, I mean, no problem! Oh Triss is back, did you still want to talk to her?”

Geralt shook his head. “No, it’s fine. I’ll be round just after twelve.”

“Ok, see you later, Geralt.”

Geralt hung up and headed back to Roach’s stall. Ciri was chattering away to Roach, petting the side of her neck. Geralt watched from the edge of the stall for a moment, leaning on the wooden slats and crossing his arms in front of his chest. Ciri was so much like him at times, it made him feel… something he couldn’t quite put a finger on, something good. Seven years and he still had that rush of warmth that he’d felt at the hospital when he’d first looked at his baby girl. He wondered if it would ever fade, he really hoped it wouldn’t.

“Come on, let’s finish up and get some food,” he said, pushing off the wall as he walked closer to Ciri and Roach. “I have some news.”

“What is it?” Ciri asked, her emerald green eyes brightening. “Am I getting a present?”

Geralt scoffed and pulled her into a side hug. “You’ll see, princess.”

“But Dad!” she whined.

“You’ll see.”

She huffed and crossed her arms in front of her chest, but thankfully got on with her work.

Breakfast had been a noisy affair. Ciri hadn’t stopped badgering him about his news, and his brothers had caught onto it. Lambert was being insufferable, and even Eskel had joined in, but Geralt refused to tell them until the dishes were cleared away.

“So, Geralt,” Eskel grunted, tossing a clean tea towel in his direction, “what’s this big news?”

“Triss has a visitor staying with her for a while,” Geralt said, trying to keep his voice as neutral as possible. He knew it would wind up his brothers, but wasn’t that what siblings were for?

“Oh wow…” Lambert scoffed. “Is that it?”

“Mum!” Ciri cried, a wide smile on her face. “She hasn’t visited for ages.”

Eskel raised his eyebrow at Geralt. They’d always been close and Geralt knew he hadn’t fooled his brother. “Not your mum,” Geralt corrected his daughter, “one of her clients.”

“Her clients?”

“A musician?” Eskel guessed.

Geralt smirked, keeping his eyes on Ciri. “Mhmm.”

Ciri stared back at him, narrowing her eyes and scrunching up her nose. Geralt just tilted his head and raised an eyebrow at her. He saw the exact moment that she realised who he was talking about. Her eyes went wide and her hands flew up to cover her mouth.

“No,” she gasped.

“Who?” Lambert grunted, running a hand through his hair.

“Jaskier?!” Ciri squeaked and jumped up to hug him. Her legs wrapped around his waist and he laughed as he spun her around the kitchen.

“Now, you can’t tell anyone that he’s here, Ciri,” Geralt said firmly as he brushed her hair from her eyes. “If he’s visiting the farm then he’s here for a break. We don’t need any paparazzi around, bothering him.”

Ciri whined. “Can’t I tell Dara?”

Geralt shook his head and dropped her gently back to the floor. “No, Ciri.”

He was suddenly glad she didn’t have a mobile phone yet. She’d begged him for one but he wanted to wait until she was a little older before she got her own.

“Mistle is going to be so jealous,” Ciri cackled.

“No, she isn’t,” he refuted “because she won’t know.”

“But Dad!”

“I’ll talk to Yen once he’s gone home and then we’ll see?”

She scowled up at him and scoffed. “Fine, but it’s not fair!”

“Jaskier is still just a person, Ciri,” Eskel said, wrapping his arms around her. “Don’t you think he deserves a little privacy too?”

“This is the coolest thing to happen in this village and I can’t tell anyone!” Ciri whined.

“Not yet, promise me, princess?”

Ciri muttered something under her breath but nodded. “Fine, I promise.”

Geralt kissed her hair, thanking her for understanding before she ran upstairs to her room. Geralt was left alone in the kitchen with his brothers, both of them had shit eating grins on their faces. Geralt groaned and pinched the bridge of his nose. Unlike Ciri, Lambert and Eskel knew that Geralt was fond of the singer, and by the looks of it they weren’t going to let him live this down.

“Sooo….” Lambert sang with a wicked grin “Jaskier eh?”

“Fuck off, Lambert.”
