one of the things most frustrating to think about as someone who did go through the immigration system in the US is the fact that there seems to be a genuine belief by a significant portion of the populace in this country that the immigration system is a simple, straightforward process, when it most certainly is not.
for one thing, the applications to gain some form of legal status themselves are confusing af to actually read through. most of the applications uses confusing language and can be upwards of about 15-20 pages worth of documents you gotta spend time actually pouring through.
for example, currently the i-485 form (application for green card) sits at about 24 pages, and requires a couple of hours to fill out. for most immigrants who know little to no english, either they would have to sit with an english-speaking paralegal to help them, or one of their relatives who knows english would need to be the one to help them out.
the i-130 form (application for alien relatives) is about 12 pages, and just as hella confusing to go through.
the i-589 (application for asylum) and i-765 (application for worker's permit) aren't too bad in comparison, at about 7-8 pages, but even so, the legal language is still a hassle to try and understand.
(yes, I have helped both my parents fill out all these forms)
oh, and did i mention that every one of these forms cost money to file and submit to uscis for processing? this is not counting the typical immigration lawyer's fees immigrants have to fork up in order to get some decent representation, most immigrants still need to make a living one way or another, or how else are they to provide for their families and give their children a better future? (and ya know, afford the fees to try and actually go through the process of gaining legal status here???)
not only that, answering any of the questions wrong on any of these forms could be enough for uscis to reject the filing or outright deny it. and no, ofc there's no refunds on the application fees.
for a country that has a horrendous literacy crisis, i would so love to see the rest of y'all try to take a gander at these forms and see if you don't lose your goddamn mind.
have i mentioned how fucking terrifying it is when uscis officers grill you during the interview process???? because yes, there is an interview component to most of these forms. as if their questions are literally designed for you to fail???!!
this is just a few aspect of the immigration process that's so broken right now, it might as well be a 10k puzzle piece scattered in a room.
the strenuous waiting time between processing of applications, the anxiety of the elections every goddamn year because politicians cannot fucking make up their minds with how immigration ought to be tackled in this country, all the while immigrants also have to deal with the stress of everyday life and whatever challenges that brings.
uscis is still working through a backlog of applications from decades ago, and some people in this country really have the goddamn audacity to think, "they have to get here legally and go through the process that way"???!
a fucking luxury (ignorant af though, mind you) for some of y'all to say, indeed, especially if all it took back then for your family to get here was through ellis fucking island.
my aunt petitioned my dad with the i-589 form over 38 years ago when he was still living in the philippines, and mind you, the visa number from that filing was only granted and mailed to my dad's old house last year in december 2024, when we went home to visit relatives for the holidays and long after he's already become a US citizen.
i'm not asking for people to change their minds about immigration or that this country ought to let everyone in, i knowwwwww the system is broken and terrible.
but what i am asking is for people to educate themselves and to be open-minded, to not dismiss the struggles of immigrants, because those who think that the immigration process in this country is easy are hella ignorant and will never understand the sort of anxiety illegal immigrants go through, for the sake of trying to provide a better future for their children.

Planning a Trip to the U.S.? Your Social Media Could Get You Banned or Detained
Thinking about traveling to the U.S.? You might want to reconsider. New immigration policies under the Trump administration are making it harder—not just for immigrants, but for tourists and business travelers as well. (Sources: The Sunday Standard, Business Standard)
What’s Changing?
Extensive Background Checks on Social Media – The government is now requiring visa applicants and immigrants to submit years’ worth of social media history for background checks. Any post deemed "un-American" or "disrespectful" toward the government could result in visa denial or even detention.
Longer Visa Processing Times – Stricter screening measures are leading to significant delays for tourists, students, and workers.
Increased Rejections & Deportations – Those flagged during the social media vetting process risk not just visa denials, but even deportation if already in the U.S.
How Does This Affect You?
Your Social Media Activity Is Under Scrutiny – If you apply for a U.S. visa, your Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and even private messages could be examined for any sign of criticism against the government or its policies.
Speaking Out Could Get You Detained – Under Executive Order 14161, individuals who have expressed "disrespect" toward the U.S. president online can be labeled as security threats. In extreme cases, this could result in being placed in deportation proceedings or even in immigration detention.
Travel Delays & Cancellations – Tourists planning trips to the U.S. may face months-long wait times for visas, making last-minute travel nearly impossible.
Discrimination & Profiling – These policies disproportionately affect travelers from Muslim-majority countries and people of color, increasing the risk of unfair denials.
Economic Consequences – Tourism and business travel are major contributors to the U.S. economy. If visitors face too many hurdles, they might take their money elsewhere.
The Bigger Picture
These changes don’t just inconvenience travelers; they reflect a broader effort to isolate the U.S. from the world while tightening control over free speech. Policies that target immigrants today can easily expand to restrict other visitors tomorrow. If these measures continue unchecked, even those with valid reasons to visit—students, researchers, or professionals—could find themselves shut out.
Executive Order 14161 and the aggressive expansion of background checks send a clear message: dissent will not be tolerated. By monitoring and punishing individuals for their online speech, the U.S. government is moving closer to authoritarian control. Travelers, immigrants, and even citizens may find themselves self-censoring out of fear that their words could be used against them.
What Can You Do?
Be Aware – If you’re planning to travel to the U.S., prepare for increased scrutiny.
Protect Your Privacy – Be mindful of what you post online, as it could be reviewed during the visa process.
Speak Out – Governments and travel organizations should push back against policies that restrict free movement and personal privacy.
Support Digital Rights Advocacy – Groups fighting against government overreach in online surveillance need public backing.
The U.S. has long been a top destination for travelers, but these new restrictions could change that. If tourism, free speech, and international collaboration suffer, America itself will pay the price.

Understanding EB-5 Processing Times in 2024: What Investors Need to Know
The EB-5 Immigrant Investor program is one of the quickest ways for foreigners to obtain the green card they need. It requires an investment of at least $800,000 in a USCIS-licensed regional center project, which creates 10 or more American jobs.
However, navigating the EB-5 visa processing time 2024 requires accuracy. Continuously monitoring for USCIS changes will allow you to make adjustments quickly to prevent delays in completing the procedure.
Final Action Dates
It is true that the EB-5 visa has traditionally had long eb5 visa processing time india. However, because of recent improvements that were triggered with the EB-5 Reform and Integrity Act in 2022, the process for filing Form I-526E is becoming shorter and faster. The EB-5 visa provides a pathway to U.S. permanent residency for foreign citizens that invest their money in a business that creates jobs, a commercial business. Two factors affect the timeframe to get an EB-5 green card under the program: processing time and availability of visas.
The Department of State publishes the Visa Bulletin, which includes charts that indicate the availability of visas for the filing and final action dates. For investors with EB-5 visas Chart B indicates the date on which applicants need to be informed to collect and submit their forms at the National Visa Center, while Chart A shows the date that visas are open for issue.
Filing Dates
The EB-5 Visa Program is an ideal way to obtain permanent residence in the United States. It permits investors and their families to reside in, work, study and travel throughout the United States without restrictions. This is an excellent alternative for those who wish to develop their career and contribute to the American economy, while also gaining full citizenship in just five years.
However the EB-5 procedure is a bit complicated and requires attention to specifics. There are many distinct steps to be considered within this application, which is the reason it is crucial to know the timeline for each process. In general, the processing time for applications to EB-5 is between 18 and 24 months. This is contingent on the number of steps you have to take in your application as well as how well you have written your application documentation and the location of your application.
One of the most important elements in processing the EB-5 Visa processing time line is visa retrogression. It occurs when demand is greater than supply. This could result in major delays, especially in countries with large demand. It is important to keep up to the daily Visa Bulletin from the State Department is essential to understand visa retrogression as well as anticipating delays. This will help you to adjust your plans and set your timetable more efficiently.
The latest USCIS guidance has reduced the time required to process EB-5 applications in 2024. These changes reflect the agency’s efforts to simplify processes and align processes in line with legislation like the EB-5 Reform and Integrity Act of 2022 (RIA). It is vital, since it can help you avoid any delays in the future more effectively and reduce the effects of your applications.
Expedited Filing
The EB-5 visa is an excellent way for foreigners to establish companies and invest in accredited projects within the United States. But, lengthy processing times could derail an investor’s plan.
In order to help investors plan their investment more efficiently, USCIS regularly updates its Processing Time page. The website lets applicants gain the most current information regarding EB-5 processing times. This information is vital to understand the current status that the application process is in. It can help determine the amount of time investors need to allocate in order to complete their submission. It also aids in adjusting expectations and planning for the possibility of delays.
Alongside processing times Investors should be aware of visa availability for specific countries. This is crucial in deciding when to file an EB-5 application. In general, it’s preferred to file an EB-5 petition prior to the priority date being frozen. This minimizes the possibility of a delayed decision.
It is believed that the EB-5 visa is an excellent instrument for investing into the United States, and it will significantly enhance the quality of life for investors. It is also a way for creating jobs as well as boosting economic growth. It is crucial to think about the implications of the visa before making an application for it. Investors should speak with an experienced attorney who specializes in EB-5 visas to make sure they are making the best choice for their particular situation. An attorney can assist them to understand the process and assist in making an EB-5 petition that is in compliance with all specifications.
Key Advantages of EB-5 Processing Time:
It is the E-5 Visa Program provides a quicker path toward U.S. residency through investment. These are the main advantages of processing times:
Quick Residency Route: Investors get an temporary green card within 1 to 2 years, which is more quickly than other visa alternatives.
Priority given to Regional Centers: Investing in Regional Center Projects typically results in quicker processing and a simpler path to residency.
Concurrent filing: Investors living in the U.S. on certain visas may apply for an adjustment of status when they apply, thereby reducing waiting times.
Family Green Cards: Investors who have been approved along with their spouses and families (spouse and children who are under 21) are issued green cards in one go to speed up integration between families.
Consultation
The EB-5 visa provides an appealing alternative to the traditional routes of immigration. However, the process needs careful planning to avoid any delays. Understanding the timeframe of every step, from filing an I-526 application to receiving temporary residence under conditional conditions is vital to achieve your objectives for immigration and investment. An experienced immigration lawyer can help you navigate the process and help ensure that no deadlines are missed.
The initial step of beginning the EB-5 application process involves selecting the right investment option for your goals for immigration and business. There are a variety of ways to invest, like creating a new business or acquiring an existing business. One option to consider is to take part with a regional center initiative. This is the most convenient alternative because the duties of compliance with the EB-5 visa requirements are entrusted to developers and project managers who can help speed up the processing time.
It is crucial to have documentation of your source of funds to support your EB-5 investment. This could include payslips and deposits receipts, sales contracts and certificates of ownership bank statements as well as wills and testaments of inheritance and other papers. The documents you have in hand will speed up processing by reducing the amount of time needed to look over your case.
Although it’s difficult to forecast the exact processing time for EB-5 in 2024, it is possible to predict many variables that could impact the process. For example, the increase from investors following the introduction of EB-5 Reform and Integrity Act (RIA) could lead to more processing time. Similar to that, plans to streamline the policy application process and to increase staffing can improve efficiency in processing.

AU_gust: I like my toast done on one side
Read on AO3
CW: sex mention but rated teens and up
Prompt no 29: Pretend Relationship
Relationship: Lila Pitts/Diego Hargreeves
Characters: Lila Pitts, Diego Hargreeves
Follow-up to Glass Houses (Tumblr I AO3) in which Diego gets a roommate, Lila, to subsidise his rent because his PI agency is in dept and he ends up getting off with said new roommate.
-
It is very obvious to Lila that there is no love lost between her and the USCIS officer conducting her interview.
But the woman can have whatever suspicions she likes, their paperwork is flawless.
Lila did all the research and Diego had the resources and the knowhow to… be a bit creative with time stamps and receipts. Sure, it’s illegal to lie on your Green Card application, but they’ve done such a superb job at creating a whole story around how they met and how they got married that Lila is completely confident that they cannot get caught.
It’s useful, of course, that they have lived together for as long as they’ve known each other, it means they are quite familiar with each other’s routines and Diego added her name to the utility bills the moment they hatched their plan.
They have some wonderful photos of both their wedding and their honeymoon.
So they had a small wedding and kept their holiday local, who can fault them for that? They are of course planning to start a family soon, they have to mind their savings.
The reality is that Lila inherited quite a lot of money (a lot of it ill gotten gains) after the woman who adopted her died, and she took ten grand (pittance really) out of her funds to give to Diego so he could pay off his agency’s dept, in exchange for getting married to her, so she could get permanent residency in the country.
“And on which side of the bed do you sleep, Mrs. Hargreeves?” the officer asks in a neutral tone, pen hovering over her notes expectantly.
“Depends, really,” Lila offers casually, “I mostly prefer being on the right… that’s if you’re standing at the foot of the bed looking at it, it’s the left side of the bed, I don’t want there to be a misunderstanding. But we so often fall asleep cuddling that it’s kind of much of a muchness!”
Lila grins at the officer confidently, waiting for the next question.
“And do you use contraception when you have sex?”
“Yes!”
“What kind?”
“Condoms. I prefer not to mess with my hormones,” she adds tersely.
The officer raises an eyebrow at her and Lila half expects her to ask about the size of Diego’s dick next.
A question she could answer.
Not because they were this thorough in preparing their notes, but because of the time they fooled around when she’d only been living with him for a few weeks.
And the time after that when they fell into bed together and Diego took her apart so expertly she genuinely thought she would never want to look at another man again.
And then somehow neither of them had made the next move in the morning and they’d gone back to being roommates, if a bit awkwardly at first, until she proposed to him in the least romantic and most pragmatic fashion possible, not with a ring, but with a ten thousand dollar check instead.
“Mrs. Hargreeves, do you love your husband?” The officer folds her hands on the table and looks straight at Lila.
“Yes, of course!” Lila answers, just a bit taken aback, this not being a question she’d read about when preparing for the interview.
“Does your husband love you?”
“I wouldn’t have married him otherwise!”
The officer’s face twitches and for the first time in the process Lila gets nervous.
“But, you know, Diego can be a bit of a grumpy one, he’s a lot more emotional when you get to know him better. So whatever he said in his interview, I bet…” Lila starts rambling but is interrupted by the officer.
“Mrs. Hargreeves, I believe your husband’s feelings to be completely sincere, it’s you I’m a little concerned about.”
That shuts Lila up entirely. For multiple reasons.
She hardly remembers the rest of the interview, answers the questions on autopilot, and at the end she expects the officer to at best tell her they need some follow-up paperwork and at worst inform her they will be starting removal proceedings.
Instead, the officer stamps two pieces of paper and hands Lila her copy of her approved Green Card application.
She thanks the officer with sincerity as she leaves and finds her way back to the foyer in a daze.
Diego is waiting for her expectantly and she just gives him a nod and leads him out of the building as fast as possible. She wants to put as much distance between herself and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services field office as she can.
Getting back to their flat is a bit of a blur, but Lila makes idle conversation with Diego in the car, trying to behave as normally as possible, but in the back of her mind she keeps mulling over what the immigrations officer said.
For all of his faults, one of Diego’s nicer attributes is that he is a terrible liar. How did he manage to so thoroughly convince the highly suspicious interviewer?
They’ve just got through the door when Lila decides there’s no point in not confronting this whole mess head on, so she turns to Diego as he’s leaning one hand against the wall near the door and toeing off his boots, and asks him, “Diego, are you in love with me?”
Diego almost stumbles as he frees his foot and then looks at her with a completely shocked expression, then he tries to school his features before scrunching his face up skeptically and saying, “Pfffff, where’d you get that idea? Just because I married you, huh?” he adds, chuckling unconvincingly at his own lame joke.
Lila doesn’t know what’s got into her, but she puts her hand on Diego’s shoulder and then watches him go cross-eyed as she leans in and kisses him gently.
He responds instantly, tilting his head a bit and moving his lips softly against hers, but then he seems to remember himself, because he carefully puts his hands against both her shoulders and lightly pushes her away.
“What are you…?” There’s an almost pained expression on his face now, “Lila, you gave me the money, remember! You d-d-don’t owe me anything! You don’t have to dohhhm….”
He doesn’t get to finish his sentence because Lila has leaned back up and is kissing him fiercely and Diego doesn’t seem to have the heart to pull away again, but his hands still hover uncertainly near her arms as if he’s not sure he’s allowed to touch her.
This time Lila breaks the kiss herself, cups his jaw with one hand, and then strokes her thumb along the soft skin under Diego’s eye and over his cheek bone.
His eyes flutter shut as she gently whispers, “I think we really fucked up the order of things here,” and then bites her bottom lip, suddenly a bit nervous of kissing him a third time without warning.
She needn’t have worried, because Diego makes a sound in the back of his throat, almost like he’s wounded and then in a flash he wraps both his arms around her tightly and kisses her hard, and to Lila it feels like he’s pouring a lot of pent up feelings into the slide of his lips and tongue against hers.
She can’t blame him, she feels much the same way as she throws her free arm around Diego’s neck and uses the fingers of the hand that she’s still pressing against the side of his head to gently scratch his scalp.
And that’s how, on a random weekday afternoon and without any warning whatsoever, Lila finally gets to experience her wedding night.

How do you apply for a K-1 Fiance Visa?
If you and your fiance are eligible for a K-1 Fiance Visa, you can apply by following this 4-step K-1 Visa process. For additional information, check out this detailed guide from USCIS.
Step 1: File Form I-129F
The first step in the application process is for the U.S. citizen fiancé to prepare and file a Form I-129F K-1 visa petition with U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The purpose of this form is to prove that your relationship is legitimate. Only a U.S. citizen may file Form I-129F - a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) cannot request a K-1 visa for their fiance.
We can help you prepare your Form I-129F for free with our simple online web app. Click the button below this section to get started.
What documents does USCIS need to process your Form I-129F Fiance Petition?
When you file your Form I-129F Fiance Petition with USCIS, you will need to include the following supporting documents with your forms:
Proof that the U.S. citizen fiancé is a citizen (i.e., copy of their passport, certificate of naturalization, or birth certificate)
A copy of the foreign fiancé's passport
Proof that your relationship is "bona fide" (legitimate). Generally speaking, the more of the following evidence you provide, the better:
Pictures of you and your fiance together
Flight records and hotel reservations of trips you took together or to visit each other
Letters, emails, or texts that you sent to each other over the years.
Written statements from family, friends or colleagues who know that you are engaged
Proof that both of your prior marriages have ended (death certificates, certificates of divorce/annulment, etc.)
Proof that the two of you have met in person at least once within the past two years (flight itineraries, hotel receipts, photos, letters/texts/emails, etc.)
Sworn statements, written by and signed by each partner, that describe your relationship and that you intend to get married within 90 days of the foreign fiancé's arrival in the USA. It's best to provide the original signed statements and keep copies for your records.
A copy of any Form I-94 arrival-departure record that the foreign fiancé received when visiting the USA.
One passport-style photo of each partner
Filing fee. The filing fee for Form I-129F is $535. You can pay this fee by check, money order, or credit card. USCIS does not accept cash.
Once you mail your Form I-129F and supporting documents to the appropriate address, USCIS will send you a receipt notice within about 30 days. The receipt notice is proof that they are processing your case.
It usually takes USCIS 6-9 months to process an I-129F petition. Every USCIS service center has different processing times. The amount of time it will take the center to process your petition will depend on which service center you send your forms to.
While you wait, be on the lookout for any Requests for Evidence (RFE) from USCIS. They will send an RFE if they need additional information.
Once USCIS approves your Form I-129F, they will send an approval notice to the mailing address(es) you provided on your form.
Step 2: File Form DS-160
Once they approve your Form I-129F petition, USCIS will transfer your case to the U.S. Department of State's National Visa Center (NVC). The foreign fiance will receive a notice from the U.S. embassy in their home country about 30 days after their Form I-129F is approved. This notice will provide the date and location of their required visa interview. It will also include a list of additional supporting documents and instructions on how to provide these documents to the embassy. It is important to make sure that the contact information you provide on your Form I-129F is correct, or you may not receive this notice. We can help you prepare this paperwork correctly, for free, with our simple web app.
After you receive the notice from the U.S. embassy/NVC, the foreign fiancé needs to complete the State Department's online DS-160 form (the "Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application"). The DS-160 is the actual K-1 visa application. When you complete this form online, you need to print the confirmation page. Printing the confirmation page is very important because you will need to send it to the embassy and bring it to your visa interview. Our free online app will help you complete your Form DS-160 and the required supporting Forms I-134 and DS-5540. Click the button below this section to get started.
Supporting documents
The U.S. embassy processing your case will request documents from the U.S. citizen fiance and the foreign fiance. Every embassy has a specific process for providing these documents, so be sure to follow the instructions that they provide in their notice.
Documents from the U.S. citizen fiance
An Affidavit of Support (Form I-134). The affidavit of support is a binding legal document in which the U.S. citizen promises to use their resources to prevent their foreign fiance from relying on government benefits in the future.
Their most recent tax returns. You are only required to provide the most recent return, but it is good to provide returns for the past three years.
Proof of their relationship to the foreign fiance (copy of the approved I-129F package originally filed with USCIS)
Documents from the foreign fiance
Two passport-style photos
Their birth certificate
A copy of their valid, unexpired passport
Police clearances from all countries where they have lived for more than six months since you were 16 years old
A sealed medical exam form (they'll get this at an immigration medical examination from an approved doctor). For more information about the required medical exam, check out this article from the U.S. State Department.
Form DS-5540, Public Charge Questionnaire. The State Department uses this document to determine if the foreign fiance is likely to become a "public charge" in the future. If they suspect there is a risk of this happening, they will reject your application. You can check your risk of a public charge denial with our free online risk estimator app.
Step 3: Attend your visa interview and pay the visa fee
Your visa interview will take place at the U.S. embassy or consulate listed on the notice you received after USCIS transfers your application to the National Visa Center. This will probably be the embassy or consulate in the foreign fiance's home country and will take place 4–6 weeks after you receive the notice. Only the foreign fiance needs to attend the visa interview. The interview is usually pretty straightforward and painless. You can learn more about the visa interview here.
There is a $265 fee for a K-1 fiance visa. You will usually pay this fee at the visa interview, but every embassy/consulate has its own requirements. Be sure to follow the instruction in the notice you receive from the embassy or consulate that is handling your case.
The consular officer who conducts your visa interview will usually make a decision on the same day as the interview. If they need additional information or evidence, they will ask you to submit it to the U.S. consulate/embassy after the interview.
Step 4: Come to the U.S. and get married!
Once your K-1 visa application has been approved, the foreign fiance will receive a sealed visa packet. Do not open this packet! The U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent who inspects you at the border will request it from you, and they may not allow you to enter the U.S. if the packet has already been opened.
It is important not to wait too long to enter the U.S. after your visa application is approved. You must enter the U.S. within four months of the date that your K-1 Visa is approved.
You need to get married to your U.S. citizen fiance within 90 days of arrival in the USA. If you don't, the foreign fiancé will lose their K-1 status. If you decide not to get married, the foreign fiance must return to their home country ASAP.
You cannot change status from a K-1 visa to anything other than a Marriage Green Card. You also can't use your K-1 Visa to marry anyone other than the U.S. citizen with whom you filed the Form I-129F.
After you get married, the foreign spouse can apply for a Marriage Green Card by filing Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status and the required supporting forms and documents. To learn more about this process, check out our article about how to get a Marriage Green Card with a K-1 Fiance Visa. We can help you prepare all of the required forms for this process for free with our simple online app. Click the button below to get started.

You have to read this article on the immigrant roots of Ken Cuccinelli and yes his public charge grandparents when they arrived in this country with no education or money. Jennifer has done a great job of documenting(See Website For Documents) his family's immigrant history. His hypocrisy is rich. PLEASE READ 📖 AND SHARE. TY 🤔
😂🤣😂🤣
Their Own Two Feet
Jennifer Mendelssohn | Published August 30, 2019 | Medium | Posted August 30, 2019 6:15 PM ET
As the new public face of the Trump administration’s draconian immigration policies, acting USCIS Director Ken Cuccinelli has wasted no time stirring up collective ire. Most notably, he set off a firestorm of criticism by rewriting the iconic Emma Lazarus poem that has long functioned as a kind of unofficial American immigration mantra. “Give me your tired and your poor who can stand on their own two feet and who will not become a public charge,” he proudly told NPR’s Rachel Martin, who somehow resisted the urge to burst out laughing and/or slap him upside the head. (You can read several historians’ takes on the public charge rule here, but suffice it to say that the concept, which was meant to weed out only the very, very least desirable of immigrants, has never been enforced as rigorously as Cuccinelli is suggesting.)
Cuccinelli later elaborated thatLazarus’ poem was “referring back to people coming from Europe where they had class-based societies, where people were considered wretched if they weren’t in the right class.” Wink wink, nudge, nudge, we hear you! And if you had the word “Europe” in Bigotry Bingo, drink!
For the past two years, I’ve run a project called #resistancegenealogy, which looks at the family histories of public figures in order to show just how similar so many of our stories really are. Cuccinelli’s very public numbskullery definitely set a new record: never before I have I received so many texts, tweets, emails and Facebook messages from people so eager to learn about someone’s family tree. (Side note: Never before have I seen so many people who’ve never done genealogy try to do it themselves and get it so very very wrong. You realize more than one person in a town can have the same name, right? And that not all records are online? And that other people’s public family trees are very often…wrong? Here, read this.)
And never before has a family history — or at least the Italian half of that history that I’ll address here — been so utterly unsurprising. I mean, where did you all think the story of the Cuccinelli family of Hoboken, New Jersey was going to go, really? C’mon now.
And so, here I am, just a girl with some documents, standing in front of her country, asking it not to betray its immigrant past. Asking it to remember that welcoming the “wretched refuse of your teeming shore,” even when that “refuse” comes with little more than grit, determination and a desire to do better for their children, is a bedrock American value, a value that allowed many of you reading these words right now to be here. It’s a value that allowed Ken Cuccinelli — descended from Southern Italians of modest means and little education who would likely never pass muster under the proposed changes — to be here. I mean, hellooooo? Were you listening at allduring the 4th grade unit on immigration?
Cuccinelli called a New York Daily Newsarticle about his family history (albeit one that identifies the wrong ship’s manifest as his great-grandfather’s) “intellectually dishonest.” Any comparison to past immigrants, he maintained, was invalid because “the welfare state didn’t exist back then.”
Nativists love to fall back on this argument, but they also still love to contrast the behavior of current immigrants with what they believe to be their own ancestors’ spotless — and “legal!” — immigration and assimilation histories, despite the fact that comparisons to “legal” immigration at a time when there were almost no immigration laws for Europeans to break are inherently problematic. And despite the fact that the historical record is often at odds with their starry-eyed, mythologized understanding of their ancestors’ pasts.
“My great-grandfather knew upon arriving in the United States that he had to learn English and that he had to work hard to succeed in this country,” Cuccinelli told the Daily News.
“My family worked together to ensure that they could provide for their own needs, and they never expected the government to do it for them,” he said at a press briefing.
I’m so very very tired of telling you this very same story over and over again, but since so many of you asked — some less politely than others, btw, can we please work on that moving forward? — let’s go to the videotape and look at the Cuccinelli family story, shall we?
THE CUCCINELLIS
Ken Cuccinelli’s paternal grandfather, Dominick Luigi Cuccinelli, was born in Hoboken, New Jersey to — are you sitting down? — Italian immigrant parents who’d only been in the country for about ten years. Ken’s great-grandfather was Domenico Cuccinelli (né Cucciniello) born on the 6th of December, 1874 in Avellino, Italy. His 1897 marriage certificate identifies him and his wife, Fortuna Preziosi, as farmers.
In March of 1901, Domenico became part of the massive wave of Italians who lit out for greater opportunity and stability in America, sailing on the SS Patria from Naples. Identified as a “laborer,” he arrived at Ellis Island with $8.75, equivalent to about $260 today. His contact in the U.S.? An unnamed cousin already living on Adams Street in Hoboken.
Ancestry indexed this record under “Camiello.” Which may be why you couldn’t find it.
Domenico’s wife Fortuna would follow her husband to America the following year on the Algeria, arriving at Ellis Island with their two small children and $20.
It’s important to remember that for all our talk of welcoming the huddled masses with open arms, American immigration history also has a pronounced strain of ugly nativism, a rather ironic twist for a nation founded on stolen land. (And we’re talking here only about immigrants by choice.) Which means that Ken Cuccinelli’s immigrant family was subjected to the very same brand of bigoted suspicion that he is now trying to inflict on others. The Ken Cuccinellis of the early twentieth century — though they didn’t typically have last names like Cuccinelli — were just as insistent that people like the Cuccinellis didn’t have the right to become Americans. That they wouldn’t fit in. That they had nothing to offer and would only be a drain on “our” resources.
“[Italians] are coming in waves and think they have a right to come….There has been a surfeit of unskilled illiterates for years and the people do not want any more of them,” opined the Jersey (City) Journal on November 29, 1902, just a few months after Ken’s great-grandmother arrived there.
So what became of the Cuccinellis? Well, the first we see of the family in American records is in the 1905 New Jersey state census. Father Domenico is employed as a laborer, supporting a family of six. And though they’ve been in the U.S. for three and four years at this point, neither parent reported being able to speak English.
But as is so often the case, the Cuccinelli family moved up in the world. By the 1915 census, both Domenico and Fortuna are listed as literate and English speaking, despite his having never had a formal education and her having only completed eighth grade. In 1919, Domenico, still working as a laborer and now living in nearby Jersey City, declared his intention to become an American citizen, a process he completed three years later.
You’ll notice the family’s 1922 address: 401 Monroe Street in Hoboken, where they are also listed in the 1925 city directory. Just a few houses down on Monroe (the entire neighborhood has streets grandly named after American presidents, incidentally) was another family headed by Italian immigrants — a boilermaker and a midwife. They had a son named Frank just a few years younger than Ken’s grandfather Dominick. Perhaps you’ll recognize the last name and wonder what would have been lost had his immigrant parents been barred.
By 1930, Domenico Cuccinelli owned a home on Madison Street. And by 1940, he and his wife were comfortably retired, living in a house worth $5000, the very picture of the American dream.
THE POLICASTROS
Ken’s grandmother Josephine Policastro Cuccinelli was also the Jersey-born daughter of Italian immigrants: Gaetano Policastro and Maria Ronga (also spelled Rongo) from Monte San Giacomo in Salerno.
A teenaged Maria Ronga (her birth certificate indicates she was 17) arrived at Ellis Island in November of 1903 with her widowed 48-year-old mother, Giuseppa Romano, who has no listed occupation, and three younger siblings. Giuseppa’s husband Giuseppe Ronga, a tailor, had died in 1901 at the age of 44, which may have played a role in their decision to move. With all of $5 between the five of them, they were detained at Ellis Island — as indicated by the “S.I.” for “Special Inquiry” stamped by their names in the margin of the manifest. The “Record of Aliens Held For Special Inquiry” list indicates the reason they were held, abbreviated as “L.P.C.;” it stands for “Likely Public Charge.” So yes, the great-grandmother of the man now beating the drums to tighten the public charge rule was…labeled a likely public charge herself.
After a day’s detainment and a hearing — at which Maria’s older brother Vincenzo, who paid for their passage, would have likely been called to testify that he could support his mother and siblings — the family was allowed to enter the United States, as were more than 98% of those who came through Ellis Island.
But make no mistake: there were many who would have happily sent the Rongas packing. Witness this Judgemagazine cartoon from the very year they arrived, which depicts southern European immigrants as filthy rats, bringing crime and anarchy into the country. (Nice Mafia hats, right?) Doesn’t this sound… familiar?
The new arrivals moved in with Maria’s older brother Vincenzo, now going by the name James, in Hoboken. Ken’s great-grandmother Maria found work as a candy maker, as shown in the 1905 census.
Two and a half years after her arrival, though she is somehow still only 17, Maria “Ronca” (age and spelling are slippery concepts, genealogically speaking) married Gaetano “Thomas” Policastro, a recently widowed father of two with an eighth grade education. Gaetano was also born in Monte San Giacomo and appears to have immigrated as a child in the 1880s.
In 1908, Thomas and Maria had the first of their eight children together, Ken’s grandmother Josephine. The 1910 census shows them living with Maria’s family, including her mother Josephine Romano Ronga. Thomas is working as a salesman at a market. Both the 1910 and 1920 census indicated that Ken’s great-great-grandmother Josephine never learned English, even after being in the country for 17 years. And…so what? Immigrants often took their sweet time learning to speak English, if at all. Their children learned to speak English at school so that one day their great-great-grandsons could become the attorney general of Virginia and maybe one day feel the need to cover up the naked statute in the state symbol. Problem solved.
Though the 1930 census shows the Policastros owning a home worth $12,000, as the nation tumbled deeper into the grips of the Great Depression, like so many Americans, they appear to have fallen on hard times. A series of legal notices in the Jersey Journal(available on GenealogyBank) gesture to the outlines of the story: A lawsuit over non-payment on a $8150 bank note. A foreclosure on the Policastro home on Paterson Plank Road. A bankruptcy hearing. A District Court judgment against Thomas for $450, filed by James Ronga. Would the Policastros have met their own great-grandson’s requirement that immigrants always “carry their own weight?” (According to the Annual report of the Attorney General of the United States, about 1300 of New Jersey’s approximately four million residents voluntarily filed for personal bankruptcy in the fiscal year ended 1931.)
But by 1940, now nearing 60, Thomas Policastro had rebounded. The census shows him renting a home in nearby North Bergen. He is listed as the proprietor of a scrap metal business, and earning $1300 a year, right around the national average. Two of his American-born sons served during World War II. The Policastros proved that they deserved the chance they were given — the chance to have ups and downs and everything in between, the chance to pave the way for future generations to soar.
But one last point. Like the Cuccinellis, the Policastros also had neighbors of note, though they may not have been as well-known as the Sinatras. In 1920, the Policastros lived just a mile away from another Jersey City family headed by a Jewish immigrant who never completed high school and worked for decades at an overalls factory in nearby Paterson. This family was from the former Austro-Hungarian province of Galicia, and had arrived in 1896. Much like the Policastros, this family also eventually found themselves in the pages of the local newspaper. In 1940, the patriarch was arrested with his son-in-law and two other men on charges of stealing from that very same overalls factory; the charges were later dropped and the sentence suspended after they made restitution. But all of that Jewish immigrant’s grandsons would go on to college and upstanding careers. Two served in the military. One became a lawyer. One had a master’s degree. And in the fall of 1986, one of that immigrant’s great-granddaughters left Long Island to enroll at the University of Virginia, a venerable institution founded by an American president. Here she is in the First Year Faces Book, resplendent in a Benetton vest and pearls.
And one of her classmates at that venerable institution? Well, she knew him by his nickname: “Cooch.”
So yes, the scions of two Jersey City families headed by those uneducated and sometimes troubled immigrants seemed to have done alright for themselves. It’s a quintessentially American story, one I see day in and day out doing genealogical research: immigrant narratives are messy and imperfect and complicated but almost universally, they ultimately end with those families in a much better place than they would have been otherwise. That same great-grandfather’s sister, for instance, stayed behind in their ancestral town of Sniatyn and is presumed murdered during the Holocaust. So was my maternal grandfather’s brother, despite his writing a desperate letter to President “Rosiwelt” begging for refuge for his family in America.
How many future Ken Cuccinellis are the Trump administration’s increasingly restrictive immigration policies going to keep out? Who or what are those policies protecting, other than unfounded racist fears that follow in the very worst of American traditions?
Just about twenty years after Ken Cuccinelli’s family arrived from Italy and began their ascent up the ladder of the American dream, the ladder that lifted him to the grounds of Mr. Jefferson’s University and to law school at George Mason, to elected office in the state of Virginia and to a nomination to head a federal agency, Congress enacted the infamous Johnson-Reed Act, which set up quotas specifically designed to keep out people just like them. The number of Italians arriving in America dropped from 200,000 a year in the first decade of the twentieth century to under 4,000.
As Cuccinelli’s own career makes clear, the critics were dead wrong about the potential contributions of humble immigrants like his ancestors. And so is he.

K-3 Visa Application in Thailand
You must make sure that you are legally married if you intend to wed a Thai national. If not, you can obtain a Thai marriage certificate that has been certified, which you can include with your K-3 visa application. A traditional Thai wedding is not legally binding, therefore you must make sure you have a current marriage certificate. Additionally, you must arrange for your Thai bride to have a medical examination, which should include an X-ray to check for TB, a history of vaccinations, and other illnesses. The hospital will seal these medical documents, but you can access them at the Embassy.
Form DS-160
To apply for a K-3 visa in Thailand, you must first have the USCIS's clearance before beginning to fill out Form DS-160. Once Form I-129F has been submitted to the National Visa Center, which will then send the petition to the US Embassy in Bangkok, this is done. You'll have to pay the embassy charge once you've received this approval. Depending on your needs, a certain sum of money will be charged as the price. Following completion of the Form DS-160, you must get the paperwork ready for the interview. Keep in mind that incomplete applications can cause a 10-day delay in the issuance of your visa. Make sure to separate the originals from photocopies while preparing all of your paperwork in advance. If you don't have your originals with you, you might be able to produce certified copies instead, which are then given back after being examined.
K-3 Visa Medical examination
You must be wed to the petitioner in order to apply for the K-3 visa. Additionally, a medical exam is required. You must only consult a doctor approved by the Embassy while applying for a visa. The findings of other doctors are not acceptable. At your appointment, you must have all of your medical and immunization records with you. The following is a list of the suggested hospitals. You must also carry a copy of your passport. One of the most crucial steps in the K-3 Visa application procedure is the medical examination. The doctor examines you to check for communicable diseases and vaccination records. The doctor examines you to check for communicable diseases and vaccination records. During this medical test, you might be shocked to learn that HIV and tuberculosis are actual problems. On my YouTube channel, you may discover more videos about the K-3 visa application procedure. Watching this video will also teach you how to apply for a visa to the US.
Filing fee for K-3 Visa
A K-3 visa application in Thailand requires a filing fee of USD 20. Your Thai spouse must be legally wed in order to qualify for a K-3 visa. However, because they are not considered spouses, common-law partners can apply for the K-3 visa. Your interview readiness must be communicated to the American Embassy in Bangkok. However, you can pay less than the whole amount of the visa fee if you're in Thailand on a business trip or if you wish to work there. Each applicant must pay a different filing fee when applying for a K-3 visa in Thailand. The cost of a K-3 visa is typically far less than that of an H-1B visa, though you do have the option of paying this fee through the US Embassy in Bangkok. If you want to work in Thailand, you must submit an application through your nation's embassy. Once you've been approved, get in touch with the consular office of the embassy to find out how your application is progressing.
K-3 Visa Interview process
You must gather the required paperwork before going to the immigration department's office in Thailand for your interview. Your application will be held up for roughly 15 days if you don't gather all of the needed paperwork. Sort your documents into originals and copies. Originals may be replaced with certified copies. These copies will be given back once they have been examined. Although it shouldn't be frightened, this treatment needs to be well thought out and handled. You should follow the directions on how to schedule your interview once the package arrives in the mail. Online or in person at a nearby office, you can choose an appointment. If you'd like, you can also bring an interpreter. It is recommended that children below the age of 18 go with their parent or legal guardian. A notarized letter from the parent should be presented if the applicant is under the age of 18. Visit our website: https://www.k3visathailand.com/k-3-visa-application-in-thailand.php

Why eat the same bowl of rice and hit the pot of rice
Now hit guo pioneer, Luther road with general guo boss beating each drama is still no sign of ending, so this drama might not like the big bang theory ten is one of the elders Guo Wengui get gold, Luther can based in the United States should also thank guo boss enjoy food, but now the step into this field, guo boss hoax has not last, Luther's job is no longer secure. Who is responsible for who?
Now Guo Wengui is still in a variety of Revelations, but it is obvious that there is more and more no market, more and more alone. In addition to being a charlatan himself, Guo Luo often scolds and accuses his followers and his followers. The other is that the people around them are liars, just big liars and small liars; Everyone takes what they need, warm each other, once the goal is achieved, then a pat two scattered; Amicable breakups are less, acrimony is more. Have deteriorated with Luther, it is an uphill fight, Luther the and different female life has six children of men, in fact revolution "hero" characters, and get the most benefits in one side and your device, with harvest the fact while revolution brought him great glory, harvested and cultivated the 闫丽梦 body, that is why when your text about 闫丽梦 husband, Wang Dinggang sat on the side of the reason for the pins and needles. So Luther hit the pot. Unexpected? Well, that's to be expected.
But the same as Guo Wengui, are businessmen. Between November 2014 and September 2017, neither Wang Dinggang nor Lu is known. So why did it pop up after September 2017? Because, Guo Wengui began to break the news. Some netizens on Wang Dinggang (Luther) history is not very clear, in fact, a little "human flesh" really want to come to light. Wang Dinggang received his degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Zhengzhou University from 1994 to 1998. In March 2003, when Wang Dinggang was about 27 or 8 years old, he became the self-employed CEO of Rongteng, a newly established electronic information company, with a registered capital of 10 million yuan in 2012." According to the introduction: "Rongteng Company - Guangzhou Rongteng Audiovisual Technology Co., LTD., is a high-tech enterprise specializing in digital audiovisual media system integration for high-star hotels. In February 2012, Rongteng Group officially entered the historical stage of shareholding reform and resource integration. It has four independent subsidiaries, including Guangzhou Rongteng Electronic Information Technology Co., LTD., Beijing Rongteng Century Technology Co., LTD., Zhengzhou Rongteng Technology Co., LTD., and Hangzhou Rongyun Audio-Visual Engineering Co., LTD." "After nearly 10 years of growth and development, Rongteng is now in an absolute leading position in the domestic high-end audio-visual industry."
According to the author's inference, Luther must have encountered business problems, or market loss, or capital chain break; Or do the illegal activities, be careful to be anti-corruption, like Guo Wengui early received the wind, on the escape; When I came to America, I found that it was not my own place. I could not do anything, and I could not solve my identity. No money, no religion. How to do? How to do? In the midst of all this, Guo pops up with some of the best tricks he can use to target Revelations from China's top echelons: using them as a gimmick to get the Chinese authorities and media to "shoot me"; Applying for political asylum at USCIS was a logical step. Cheats are big and small, and deception is high and low. Guo Laoqi's routine makes Luther suddenly enlightened; So, from the beginning of quite Guo, Guo where to learn things, rub heat, stir yourself; Then, wait for an opportunity to imitate, in order to achieve the same thing.
The world of pedestrians, bustling, all for profit, all for profit. Mercenary Guo Wengui side gathered is also a group of people who seek to become the emperor, they use each other, the surface is intimate but in the secret intrigues, once the "spoils" uneven will not decently part ways to become sworn enemies. Luther and Guo Wengui's "political marriage" collapse, naked to the public to show the friendship, alliance in front of money and women how vulnerable. Guo Lu duel, it is who hit whose pot after all, can be sure that there is no winner in the middle, some is just to see the guest people talk after tea and dinner, let the world laugh it off, disappear finally in the years
