How I Study for Exams
Hi guys, happy February! I don’t know about you, but the semester is starting to pick up for me. Next week, I have a chemistry, genetics, and psychology exam, so I thought what better way to motivate myself and all of you than share the way I study for exams. This varies a little bit by subject, but in general, this is the method I use.
-Print out typed outlines. I made a post about how I take notes in class, which I highly recommend reading before this, as I’m going to just breeze over it. You can find that post here. So as mentioned, following each class I type the notes from each chapter/lecture and organize them into files on my google drive. A week before the exam, I print out each chapter that will be covered on the exam.
-Plan a schedule that works for you. Depending on the number of chapters, I usually divide the work up to one or two chapters a day, that way I’m not cramming or studying all at once. I leave about 2 days beforehand to do practice problems and things like that for all the chapters instead of focusing in. If you know you have a particularly busy day, plan around that in advance so you don’t stress yourself out.
-Highlight key points in the outlines. In general, the outline should already be a pretty condensed version of key information, but as you can see in the photos I attached, I still like to highlight and jot down notes. I use one color for big themes of the chapter, one for vocabulary, and one to box any examples given. This way the day before or the day of the exam you can just skim the highlighted sections to refresh what you studied.
-Quizlet. I definitely don’t recommend this for all subjects, but for any vocabulary or things to memorize this helps me A LOT. The learn feature makes you type out the exact definition, which really locks in the topic after doing this a ton. I recommend doing this as a way of overall studying after highlighting each outline.
-Practice Problems. Chances are throughout the course there have been quizzes or homework which are usually valuable to do again and make sure you retain the information from the outlines. If the course doesn’t have this supplemental work, the textbook will usually have practice problems at the end of each chapter. This is especially valuable in math and science, as it makes sure you can apply what you’ve learned.
Honestly, when it comes to studying, make sure you pay attention to what works for you. By no means am I an expert, I just thought I would share the method that works well for me. Make sure to take care of yourself even when studying, move your body, eat, sleep, and drink water. If you don’t take care of yourself you won’t have the energy to perform well. You got this, it’s all about balance, and one grade won’t ruin your life.

This will be my view for a bit and how I will have to study. Reading and quiz, then 10 page paper by tomorrow night... Even though my last post has been quite a while ago, I didn't forget that I wanted to update you on my study notes & learning system, and since I just took my first master’s exam (you guessed it, statistics duuh!) I feel like I can now report on the whole cycle: From taking notes and organising lecture documents to studying for the final exam: I created a really awesome system that serves its purpose in helping me to study more effectively.
What I do first of all, right after I enrolled for the courses I want to take that semester: I design / draw covers for each lecture in Procreate. This might not be the most important step (and also I can imagine that under time pressure this was the first thing I’d stop doing), but as long as I have time to do it, it is something that I look forward to, that gets me in the mood of a new semester and makes me excited to look at my notebooks 🤩. I usually do this in Procreate and afterwards import the files into GoodNotes as covers of the new notebooks (one notebook for each course).
To benefit optimally during the lectures, I then import the lecture slides (if available at the time) into GoodNotes. I REALLY love that GoodNotes syncs between devices and that there’s a desktop (macOS) version. Makes copy-pasting documents so much easier and faster! When I’m done, I can then just jot down my notes next to the slides, which later helps a lot with understanding the topic.
When studying for the final exam I almost always rewrite me notes, this helps me so much with making sense of everything and joining the dots, as well as with memorising the facts. I really try to work in all the information I have (eg from my own notes, lecture slides, books,…) and combine them with documents like graphics or pictures for easier comprehension. And even though in the end I am left with an encompassing script, it doesn’t take a lot of space (wheter physically nor digitally) so I can conveniently file it away to review the notes at a later date. And how magical that with GoodNotes you can search your own handwriting; this makes finding keywords so much easier!!
I am quite a haptical person, so for exams that are especially hard like oral exams, where I really need to know my stuff, I like to print my notes after I’m done writing / summarising them. I then bind them with the ARC dicbounding system (which is an AMAZING system that I will tell you in another post!!), and use that final textbook-like script for studying. Gladly I didn’t have too many exams so far, where I really had to learn something by heart, but when I have to do that, I really like flash cards to accelerate that process. I konw there are good revision-apps as well, but I’m no pro (yet) when it comes to those. Feel free to recommend me your favourites tho :)
So thats basically it! I’d really like to know wheter it’s just me, or if you guys benefit from rewriting everything in the end as well. Please tellll meeeee. And apart from that I hope this might help someone who is still trying to figure out a studying system that works for them ☺️😊 Save for later via IG (@riri.studies) or share with somebody who might benefit 💛

Meditation Nation
Meditation often inspires positive traits such as focus, clarity, willpower, empowerment and deep trust in individual capabilities and success towards what we commit to.
Through our lives, even in the course of a single day things can change and a person can go through a wide range of emotions. Meditating can create clear, and dominant traits we are aware of. The ability to put a label on how we feel is empowering. The complicated mind can find comfort when it’s able to recognise itself.
Finding the right word and recommended meditation technique is validating and helps feel cool and collected. Here are some traits and the corresponding meditation technique that is recommended when we experience a certain kind of mind:
An indulgent mind – is helped by the recollection of the body, starting the meditation in the body
An irritable mind – by practicing loving kindness meditation
An oblivious mind – relying on the breath helps
A doubtful mind – relying on the breath
A susceptible mind – can go back to being at peace with the exercise of making a reflection of values
A questioning mind – the recollection of peace is more than reassuring
The above is just a quick mapping, try not to get too caught up in the technique and enjoy the process.
“Worrying does not take away tomorrow’s troubles. It takes away today’s peace.” Randy Armstrong
