The basics of photography

I'm glad you found your way to my article on photography basics. I have taught countless photographers around the world the basics of photography through Improve Photography, so I understand how difficult it can seem to learn the basics of photography.

My goal is to win this goal. Photography Basics shows the easiest and easiest way to learn photography basics.

I think you will love this show because of everything you discover and I have no doubts that you will join the Improve Photography community as soon as you master the principles of photography. Let us go.

The equipment you will need

You are able to take photographs using the simplest of cameras. However, the fundamentals that I would love to teach are those who want to learn how to work with a DSLR camera, a micro four thirds camera, or at least a camera that allows the photographer to adjust the shutter speed, l openness and ISO. Some pocket cameras have this operation.

Now that you've got your camera, then it's a good time to learn about vulnerability.

Exposure: Basis of photography

When photographers talk about "vulnerability" we simply mean the darkness or brightness of a photo. It seems easy enough to get a photo properly exposed (which gets the proper darkness or brightness), but the truth is, it could be the trick.

If you're studying this Photo Basics show, it probably means you're shooting your camera's “green style” or auto-adjust. This means that the camera completely controls the vulnerability of this image.

Want proof that automatic is not the ideal way to go? Take a look at the graph below. This may sound okay to you… until you find the image on the right side. Same sunset. Same camera. Images were taken seconds apart. The difference? The image on the right was taken with manual exposure.

Maybe the image on the right! By creatively choosing a dark vulnerability, the rich colors of the sunset were allowed to shine.

But technically the photo on the left is “right” and the photo on the right would be “incorrect”. The camera was detected through the lens and attempted to reveal to the bird that it would not turn into a shadow. For me, the photo was not about exposing the bird correctly, but exposing the sunset correctly.

The opening

So suppose you take a photo that is too bright. How can you fix it? Just choose a larger opening. Simple! Aperture sizes are quantified by f-stops. A higher f-stop like the f-22 usually means the aperture slit is rather small, and also a very low f-stop like the f / 3.5 implies that the aperture is wide open.

Let us review your knowledge to make sure you have it all. If you choose an image that is too dark at 5.6, do you choose a lower or higher amount? Yes! The dimensions of this aperture, however, are greater than the darkness or brightness of this image.

Depth of field is the amount of sharpness in that movie, but also the amount of blur. If you want to have an image of an individual and the background is out of focus, use a shallow depth of field. If you want to get an image of a panoramic mountain view, use a small aperture dimension (high number of stops) so that the landscape is perfectly sharp. For those like me who are visual learners, then I think this image can help solidify information regarding openness. Have a moment and make sure you know this information before continuing.

Shutter speed

The camera is a small "curtain" of the camera that rolls over the image detector (the electronic version of the image) and allows light to shine on the imaging detector to get part of a moment.

A darker image is produced as the camera moves fairly quickly and simply lets light get from the imaging detector a very small fraction of the time. The length that the shutter lets pass over the image sensor is called the shutter speed and can be measured in fractions of a second.

So a shutter speed of 1/2 over another allows more light to get through the image sensor and will create a brighter image than the usual shutter speed of 1/200 of a moment. Therefore, if you take a photo that is too dark, you can use a slower shutter speed to allow the camera to capture more light.

As the aperture affects the vulnerability in addition to the depth of the area, the shutter has more impact than the vulnerability. Shutter speed can also be primarily responsible for controlling the amount of blur in a movie. If you consider it, it seems reasonable that the shutter speed determines the maximum blur of the image.

ISO

The funny thing about ISO is the fact that it's an acronym, but no one really understands what that means. We always talk about ISO, even though it is an international standardization organization.

A high ISO sensitivity, such as ISO 1600, will create a brighter image than a lower ISO sensitivity, such as ISO 100. The disadvantage of increasing ISO sensitivity is that it creates a noisier image. Digital sound is evident whenever a photograph appears grainy.

Maybe you took a night shot with your cell phone or your own pocket and found that it looked really grainy? This is because the camera tried to compensate for your dark scene by choosing a higher ISO, which resulted in more grain.

What makes a “big” ISO is constantly changing. Camera organizations are continually improving the ability of cameras to use large ISOs without so much grain.

Decades ago, only the most sophisticated professional DSLR cameras could achieve ISO 2000, and even entry-level DSLR cameras could handle this degree.

Since every camera is different, you might do well to run a few tests with your own camera to determine what size of an ISO you can shoot without creating an image that's too grainy.

Right now, you'll usually find newer DSLRs favoring widescreen ISO ranges.

Combine it all

My guide a I figured the flabby sheep in the playground was dying pretty quickly from whooping cough, so I worked hard that week to take pictures of the pair of sheep that were in that area of playground. a small group of bighorn sheep and started photographing them using a very long 600mm lens.The morning and cloudy skies made the situation very dark for the shot.

Some lenses can cost a small fortune… Anyway, it had a maximum aperture of f / 4. So I set my aperture to f / 4 to collect as much light as possible.

It also influenced the depth of the area to scramble the stones on the other side of the bighorn sheep. I put my shutter speed. I wanted to take pictures on the photo so I set my camera to 1/1000 of another shutter speed.

After I took a picture. WAAAY too low! I couldn't interfere with my shutter speed or aperture, so I knew I had to use the third participant in the vulnerability triangle, ISO.

I played around with my ISO and found that when I raised it to ISO 640 the image was bright enough that you could take it without making it too grainy. That’s it!

How fast can a camel run? This was my question when I was taking the photos of camels running in large groups when they were made to run in the Pushkar Camel and Cattle fair/festival. This is an early morning scene in Pushkar, during the fair season, the camels would arrive from the neighbouring villages for trading. The shepherd running behind all the camels guided them to Pushkar grounds. The desert sand will raise above 6 - 8 feet high as the camels run. The fastest camel that covers a short distance could run at a speed of 65km/hr.  These are the last two camels in the herd that were running. There would be hundreds of photographers documenting the Pushkar festival and it is almost difficult to get a frame without photographers. A low angle shot would show the camels tall and magnificent. When dust is the major challenge, keep your gear covered properly against the fine dust. Bottom line: A backlight angle could get the action artistic. Which image format is best for you?

If the photographer's digital camera allows it, it is advisable to shoot his shots in RAW format and then apply color corrections during image processing, with photo editing software. The advantage of this technique is that it maximizes the possibilities during post-production. 

Indeed, the RAW format, which is rich in image information, lends itself more to retouching than the black and white format and offers more possibilities for corrections during the processing phase. 

If the camera used does not allow the photo in RAW format, a simple color shot can always offer great opportunities to rework your black and white image later.

What are the settings to master?

Exposure is important because it is exposure that will define the shades of gray in the black and white image. An overexposed or underexposed photo will remove the contrast of light and dark tones. The aperture should also be watched because a small aperture will give more sharpness to the photograph. 

Finally, too much noise can quickly become a problem to get a beautiful black and white photo. However, this noise, also called grain, will not come to haunt the image if the ISOs are not too high. Thus, it is recommended to limit yourself to a setting between 100 and 800 to limit noise.

And the composition?

In black and white as in color, the rule of thirds and special attention to guidelines are paramount. The gaze must also practice seeing in black and white for the photo to be successful. 

In order to forget about color, the photographer must focus on the patterns, angles, shadows, contrasts of light and shadow that will bring texture to the image.

In the end? In black and white as in color, the photographer's eye and a good knowledge of the basic rules will be the keys to a successful photo.
