The Weekend Update: Carolina Prep and More at Pine Top, Three Lakes, Full Gallop Farm
Tumblr media
Another weekend of eventing is in the books, with plenty of horse and rider pairs out and about in the southern states. We’re inching closer to warmer weather for the spring season, as well as some upcoming competitions, like the Carolina International CCI4* in just a few weeks!
We caught up with some of the riders aiming for Carolina, and took a look back on this weekend and celebrate our Weekend Winners! Congrats to all on successful outings, with an extra shout out to the winner of our Unofficial Low Score Award, Priscilla Pignatelli and Dittos Gold En Fury, who scored 20.7 in the Starter Rider division at Three Lakes!
Full Gallop Farm Mid February H.T. (Aiken, SC) [Website][Scoring]
Preliminary/Training: Alexandra Knowles and Fernhill Mac an Bata (29.8) Training: Tracey Bienemann and Silver Bop (29.6) Training/Novice: Margaret Schneck and Islandwood Border Patrol (31.7) Novice: Cole William Horn and WillOMoor Pathfinder (24.7) Beginner Novice A: Christine Hryzak and Sheeran (27.7) Beginner Novice B: Fylicia Barr and Master Of Illusion (23.8) Starter: Sophia Perry and Corona With Lime (29.7) Pre-Starter: Katherine Thornton and Carlingford Finegan (28.0)
Pine Top Advanced (Thomson, GA) [Website][Scoring]
“I’m very pleased with how my horses went at Pine Top this weekend,” says Advanced B winner Ariel Grald, who reflected, “I’m based in Ocala for the winters, and although we have several great venues to choose from, I always make the trip to the Pine Top Advanced HT with my upper level horses… The cross country courses are fantastic and are a good evaluation of where the horses are at at the beginning of the season.”
We’ll see Ariel at Carolina in just a few weeks, with Anne Eldridge’s Leamore Master Plan (Master Imp xx – Ardragh Bash, by Cavalier Royale) in the 4*S, Annie Eldridge’s Diara in the 3*S (Diacontinus – Lady Revens, by Colon xx), and Annie Eldridge’s Adagio’s Nobility (Adagio De Talma – Noble Lady I, by Heraldik xx) in the 2*S.
Andrew McConnon won the Advanced A with Jeanne Shigo’s Ferrie’s Cello (Chello III – Karelza, by Wolfgang). “I’m thankful to have my horses starting off the season looking and feeling well! I had different goals for each horse and I’m pleased with all four of them. We’re really fortunate to have Pine Top Farm on our spring calendar, I’ve been going to Pine Top for nearly 20 years. I’ve had many firsts at Pine Top, including my first Advanced many years ago. It’s always been a special event to me!”
Coming out of the winter, these early spring events have been helpful in bringing Andrew’s horses back from their breaks and in utilizing their training. “I’ve been fortunate to learn from William Fox-Pitt in England the importance of a long winter break and several weeks of long hacking before starting back into work. Most recently with the help of the USEF I’ve had the opportunity to train with Leslie Law, well as my long time coaches at home who have helped me step up my game. While I’m not on the development list this year, the opportunities over the last several years from Nations Cup teams, European tour, and access to training in that program has made a huge impact to myself and my program.”
With a recent move out onto his own, Chris Talley sought out Pine Top as an important stop in his spring for his horses and program: “This year after stepping out on my own and starting my own business I came up from Ocala, Florida and came to the second Pine Top specifically because they have the Advanced division which I wanted to target with the Allison Pratt’s FE Marco Polo (Arko Junior Pms – Elfe II, by Exorbitant XX) and my own Loughtown Cici (Cc Captain Cruise – Castlelawn Diamond Clover, by White Clover) that recently stepped up to [the level].”
“The cross country at Pine Top is why I chose to come here every year. It’s big and bold and really requires positive riding. The courses offer fair questions for this point in the season and also offers a bit of terrain which in Florida you don’t get much of.”
“It’s been a very good start to the season and all the horses finished Pine Top full of confidence so I’m excited for some big spring plans… Since establishing my own business I’ve been really happy with how the horses are going. I have an amazing group of horses and wonderful owners who have been incredibly supportive. This year I really wanted to find the fun in it again. I wanted to enjoy my personal life as much as I enjoy the horses and I’ve found the perfect work/life balance which I think the horses and their performance and reaping the rewards of,” Chris commented.
Having just moved her business back to the states from her time in England, Kimmy Cecere enjoyed her first time at Pine Top. “What a fantastic event to start the season! Both the cross country and show jumping courses were strong and rewarding.”
“Jacqueline Mars’ Landmark’s Monaco (Formula One – Glamour) had a fun and easy canter around the Intermediate. [Her own] OS Hermintage (Indoctro – Elvira), who has just stepped up to the level, gained confidence throughout all three phases. The rolling hills and variety of questions set both horses up to continue on to Carolina in a few weeks,” Kimmy reflected.
Kimmy’s horses seem to be making the transition to their new base in Southern Pines well. “The horses traveled super well and they love our new base in Southern Pines,” Kimmy commented. “I have developed some great new relationships, and I’m looking forward to expanding my business!”

🤣 sorry I can't stop laughing at that new Academia-Military-Disneyland Tour. How much do we need to pay for that fieldwork propagandist imperialist symposium? For those who have never been to Korea, and at the DMZ, you should go, but not with those experts, as you will hear the same stuff as South Korean tour operators.
HT Mudge
You'd better go with this grassroot movement instead, which is also supported by the Americans (Koreans), but that won't sell you so-called experts knowledge, which are information that you can read online.
Or if you really want South Korean national insights, Dramas (TV series) are great. Why? Because, they depict the political powers at play in the peninsula, the role of the Chaebols (the conglomerates) in policies making. An issue that is never mentioned by the American so-called experts, who only focus on the nuclear demonization of North Korea. The Axis of Evil, the Bush administration foreign policy/national security rhetoric haunts those experts' subconscious. Honestly, were you reassured when Trump had access to the Nuke code? Do you remember when I proposed to give him a false code?

In South Korea, Dramas screenwriters and producers have more liberty than the press. As an Anthropologist, I think it's because of the popular theatrical tradition to mock the rulers (the aristocracy, the governors, the buddhist monks, etc). Once a year in every village when TV didn't exist. This liberty is now implicit, and useful.
If you know how to analyze audiovisual storytelling, you get access to precious knowledge when watching Dramas, while being entertained. You can understand the social dynamics, the international trade agreements through product placement, the politics, the economic system: a framework invisible in foreign news outlets and foreign scholars papers, because the so-called experts are either scared to lose their seats in their ivory towers, or incapable of thinking outside the box to connect the dots, or just lazy.

the devil judge book list
Tumblr media
hello everyone! because my curiosity got the better of me, i started a project where i went through the entirety of the devil judge to learn more about what books were used within the show.
while i have found a good chunk of them with the help of @maystea and @thequillandscreen, there are some that i cannot identify due to shot angles and quality of scenes. however, i wanted to make this post because i think it’s fascinating.
most of the books in these posts belong to yohan, but there are a few haphazard ones here and there. we’ve done our best to not only find the book title and authors but links to these books, as well. i also make note of books that have no author, are a prop book or ones that we were not able to identify.
i’ve done my best to include as much as i can. hopefully i haven’t skipped anything significant. and due to the amount of books in the show, i will not be posting the covers from online book stores. the screen shots will be from the devil judge accompanied by the info we have available, including an external link and timestamps. keep in mind that these timestamps are from episodes that have the intro in each episode.
i hope this helps you discover new content to read, or at the very least, some new material to include in your hcs and fanfic.

Top 20 Things of 2018
1.) Beychella How do you make a long awaited surprise album between two of the biggest names in music that is also one of the year’s best feel like complete afterthought? Set the bar as high as Beyonce’s Coachella appearance.
First awards show performances, then music videos, now music festival gigs: is there anything that Beyonce CAN’T turn into high art?
2.) Explained by Vox The most exciting development in the world of television in 2018 was radically breaking the rules on episodes length. We saw 30 minute dramas, and hour long comedies. We got shows like Maniac where episodes were as long as 49 minutes and as short as 27 minutes. Now television creators can tell exactly the stories they want to tell in however much time they want to tell them in. And perhaps nowhere were these loosened restrictions taken better advantage than Explained, Vox’s documentary series for Netflix. Many topics cant sustain a full length documentary, but, say, 14 minutes explaining cryptocurrency to me? Sure! 17 minutes on designer DNA? Sounds great! 20 minutes on the origins of K-Pop? How do you say “yes please” in Korean? Every episode has a different narrator, a different look, a different feel, and varies wildly in subject matter. Yet they are all exactly the length they need to be. The only thing left I really need explained to me is why no one thought to make this series before.
3.) Serial Season 3 If Explained was a great example of the latest evolution in television, then the new season of Serial is at the front line of the evolution of our newest artistic medium: podcasts. Serial’s third season was nothing like its second, which was in turn nothing like its first. It’s a series still figuring out what it CAN be, while now defining forever what it NEEDS to be. Serial this year explained a deeply important topic in a way that wouldn’t have been possible through any other medium. They always say if you’re a writer you have to ask yourself what form of writing your idea needs to be. Don’t write a play that’s really a TV show, or a movie that should be a book. And now we can add to that don’t make a TV series that’s really a podcast. As Homecoming proved this year, the two mediums are very different and better equipped to tell different stories. And after hearing Serial Season Three I can’t imagine there will ever be a better way to explore the current American criminal justice system. It was 2018’s version of Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle. It may not change national food safety standards, but it hopefully will do something perhaps even more important: it will make us never again take lightly the election of local judges and sheriffs. It was a podcast for the heart, the head, and the time capsule.
4.) Black Mirror - “Hang the DJ” I know this technically came out December 29th 2017 but I’m counting it here because nothing was more 2018 than this. The sadness, the isolation, the uncertainty, the living in a world you don’t understand the rules of anymore, the unfairness of modern life, but the ultimate perseverance of hope and love: it’s all there in the best episode of Black Mirror’s third season. It made me cry out of sadness and happiness in equal measure. Could anything be more 2018 than that?
5.) Kesha at the Grammys Ok so maybe one thing was more 2018.
The Grammys, an organization led by Neil Portnow, a man who said this year that “women need to step up”, and an organization that didn’t offer its one female Album of the Year nominee a solo performance spot, also offered us 2018’s most powerful show of female solidarity and one of the most moving moments of the Me Too era. It all amounted to the perfect encapsulation of this year. Kesha scream crying and then collapsing into a sea of strong supportive women WAS 2018.
6.) Eighth Grade My favorite movie of the year was also the year’s best horror movie. It was so real, and visceral, and intense, and frightening that at times I literally had to remind myself to breathe. I watched at least half the movie through my fingers and on the edge of my seat. Proving what everyone who has lived through it already knows: there’s nothing in the world more terrifying than being in junior high.
7.) Big Mouth Speaking of junior high, the other side of the pain and trauma of growing up is humor, so why it took this long for someone to make a comedy series explicitly about puberty is beyond me. I guess, of course, making a show like this work is a fine needle to thread. It wouldn’t work without being animated and being on a streaming service that lets them go as far as they did. It wouldn’t work without writing that is both laugh out loud funny and deeply compassionate and human in equal measure. And it wouldn’t work without one of the best voice casts on TV, including a true tour de force from Maya Rudolph. But work does it ever. In a just world junior high health class homework would be simply watching this show.
8.) Emma Gonzalez speech Here’s how long 2018 was: this was from 2018.
Finishing off my personal 2018 Growing Up Trifecta is the most powerful 12 minutes of the year. That high school students could be more inspiring, articulate, and better leaders than the President of the United States is sadly, at this point, a given. But that they are now more effective and efficient than him at starting genuine political movements still feels revolutionary. The kids are our future, and our future has never looked brighter.
9.) Childish Gambino - “This is America” video 100 years from now if theres only one cultural artifact that still exists and is still remembered from 2018 this will be it. A “you know where you were the first time you saw it” level cultural event. No song will ever be more closely associated with its music video, and no music video will ever be more of an avatar for an entire cultural moment than this. THIS is, of course, a truly shocking and horrifying (in a good way) music video from the former fifth lead of the TV show Community. A profound and brilliant piece of art underscored by a fun-sounding dance song. The year’s most complex and important social-political message delivered in 4 minutes via YouTube. This is America indeed.
10.) Drake - “God’s Plan” video While Donald Glover may have perfected the music video as art form, it goes without saying that long ago Drake mastered the music video as promotional tool. And in that sense the music video for “God’s Plan” seems like minor failure. It seemed to sort of come and go from the culture, especially in light of the success of the In My Feelings Challenge. But for me, there was nothing more heartwarming and human this year than watching Drake give away almost a million dollars to strangers. It was an idea so simple it’s shocking no one had ever done it before. And so affecting I was shocked it didn’t seem to penetrate the public consciousness more. There’s so much going on at all times now it’s hard for anything to truly break through all the noise, but this really deserved to. It’s impossible to watch this without smiling, and is there anything 2018 needed more than that?
11.) Nanette The dumbest debate this year was whether or not Nanette was stand up. Form and genre aren’t delineators still worth discussing in 2018. It’s now only about the message and the messenger, everything else is just details. An important fresh voice, the most timely, and sadly, timeless message imaginable, delivered in a way that reached and deeply affected seemingly every person you knew? What is there to debate? Nanette may or may not be stand up comedy, but it’s definitely RISE UP comedy. And in the end, that’s all that matters.
12.) Amber Says What Please click on the link above. The final two minutes are by far the best comedy of 2018. It still makes me laugh so hard that it causes me physical pain. You’ve been warned.
13.) A Star is Born trailers A Star is Born is maybe a perfect film. The performances, the songs, the direction, the fact that there’s literally no human being on earth who could have played her part and made the movie work like it did other than Lady Gaga. It was all perfect. But there was actually something better than watching A Star is Born: anticipating watching a A Star is Born. Before the first A Star is Born trailer came out I thought the whole project sounded dumb and unnecessary. After I finished watching the first trailer I knew I was going to see A Star is Born opening night. True story: I was at a movie where the same A Star is Born trailer got played three times in a row for some reason. And it was riveting every time. There was no grumbling at all in the audience, and I for one was sad when it didn’t replay a fourth time. So as much as I loved A Star is Born what I would really love is be able to still want to see A Star is Born for the first time.
14.) Ariana Grande - “thank u, next” It’s genuinely impressive that a song released in November could be the song I listened to by far the most this year. Somehow it took less than two months for this song to feel completely ubiquitous. Hell, even the PHRASE “thank u, next” is omnipresent now. Forget Song of the Summer, this was maybe our first Song of the Winter. Which is perfect because has a hit pop song ever sounded more winter? It’s cold, but it keeps you warm. It’s the sadness of the holidays with the life reaffirming joy of the holiday season. It’s a sweater for you to wear on the dance floor. And it’s clearly exactly the song so many of us needed. No matter how many times I’ve heard it (and as I said, I’ve listened to it, uh, A LOT) its existence feels like a holiday miracle. Having a new and fresh take on the breakup song in the year 2018? That shit IS amazing.
15.) The proposal at the Emmys This is literally the only thing anyone remembers about this year’s Emmys. It was amazing, and special, and made anyone who watched it believe in true love. But for me it still cant touch the most heart-melting awards show moment of all time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCJrku4fSxk
(Was this whole entry just an excuse to link to one of my absolute favorite YouTube clips? Perhaps.)
16.) Succession When I saw the promos for Succession I literally made the sound UGH out loud. The last thing the world needs is another show about rich white people behaving badly, I thought. How could there possibly be anything original left to say on that topic? Who on earth is still greenlighting shows like this in The Year of our Lord 2018?
People much smarter than I am clearly, that’s who.
Because from writing, acting, production design, direction - whatever element you want to focus on - this was the best and most exciting new show of 2018 by a wide margin. People have been saying for years that TV is the new movies; this show made movies look like the old TV. It was the most vibrant and perfectly crafted big budget feature film of 2018, stretched out over 8 episodes on HBO. Did it have anything new and important to say about the world? Probably not. And turns out, I couldn’t have cared less. The phrase compulsively watchable might have been invented just to describe the world these actors and writers created. I would watch the team involved with this show dry paint.
17.) Angels in America on Broadway Angels in America is the best play of the past 30 years and its not even close. So the fact that it would get a production that’s this good is just unfair for everyone else on this planet who makes theater. It was so good it made all other plays I’ve seen since seem small and cheap and unimportant. It was such a towering achievement that it has made the entire rest of theater as an art form seem insignificant by comparison. When you hear old people talk about seeing Brando in Streetcar or watching the original production of Death of Salesman I now can relate to what they are talking about. I’ll be thinking about Andrew Garfield’s final monologue for the rest of my life. It was unfair that we the audience had to all leave the theater when the lights finally came up and that we couldn’t all just live in that feeling forever. The eight hours I spent watching this play are what art is all about.
18.) Jesse Plemons in Game Night If dying is easy, and comedy is hard, then they should cancel the Oscars and give Jesse Plemmons Best Supporting Actor right now for his work in Game Night. And ok, maybe it wasn’t the BEST performance of 2018, but it was DEFINITELY the best performance relative to what it needed to be. It should have been a dumb throwaway part in a big-budget mainstream ensemble comedy. But Jesse Plemmons crafted a performance so strange and singular and memorable that it elevated the entire movie into something way better than I’m sure even its creators expected. I legitimately don’t know how everyone didn’t break in every one of his scenes. It’s a master class in the comedic power of silence. It should be studied in acting classes everywhere. And 20 years from now when Game Night is considered a comedy classic, Jesse Plemmons will be the main reason why. You heard it here first.
19.) The 1975 - A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships Saxophones? Electric guitar solos? Backing choirs? A concept album about being uncomfortable with the internet? Dumb pretentious song titles? This album couldn’t be any more in my wheelhouse if I made it myself. Its best song is basically a modern reimagining of “We Didn’t Start the Fire” for God’s sake!
For me this wasn’t just an album, it was an experience. It was big music to get lost inside of. And I did. At age 36 it’s nice to know that sometimes I can still feel 16. And it’s fitting that a band named The 1975 would be the ones to make music that’s so transporting.
20.) Emma Stone Ok so as someone who once argued in this very space that Emma Stone deserved an Oscar nomination for Easy A, it’s clear I’m pretty deep in the tank for Emma Stone. But even an Emma Stone hater would have to admit than this was a banner year for Emma Stone. Signing up for the insane acting challenge that was Maniac and completely acing it while totally exposing two-time Oscar nominee Jonah Hill in the process? Going toe to toe with Olivia Colman in the battle of the best acting performances of the year in The Favourite? Coming across as more charming than Jennifer freaking Lawrence ?!?
2018 was Emma Stone’s year, we were all just living in it.

Return of the 3Mak – Derek Mcnally on NoEXIT’s Epic Rise, 15 Year Hiatus, & Current Comeback
Tumblr media
When the TRL boy band era was at its height, NoEXIT burst onto the scene with their 1999 mega-hit “Back Here.” As fast as the English trio arrived, however, just 4 years later they disbanded, although not before racking up over 3 million albums sold, and capturing the hearts of a devoted fan base that refused to give up the hope of seeing Mark Jeremy Berry, Derek Mcnally, and Stephen Burns (photo: L to R) grace the stage together again one day. Last year the patience of their fans was rewarded with the announcement that the band was getting back together. With the release of a new single, “Bullet Train,” an album due out in August, and a national tour that kicks off today, NoEXIT are picking up right where they left off.
vimeo
I caught up with NoEXIT’s Derek Mcnally to find out how the trio ended up getting back together, and what inspired them to record as a group again. He also discussed feeling “a little bit lost” after the band’s 2003 breakup, and how a message on Myspace gave birth to a successful career in the EDM world. NoEXIT has a new project coming out in August, the first single off of which is “Bullet Train,” and you have a tour that kicks off May 7th. Why did you guys feel now was the right time to bring NoEXIT back into the limelight? Well, it wasn’t like we planned it, or anything. It was something that happened naturally. We’ve been friends for many years. (After NoEXIT) split up in 2003 we’d meet at social events and stuff, but we never used to sing together, or anything. This one time we got the guitars out, we had a little jam, and I posted it on social media, “Hey, look who popped in,” and the video went crazy. We had millions of views in just a couple of days, so we were like wow, that was incredible. We also really enjoyed it, just jamming together, playing together. We realized we’d missed it, and that we wanted to do some more of it, so we just decided let’s just start writing songs and see what happens. Here we are now, the album’s finished, it’s gonna be out in August, the first single is “Bullet Train,” and we’re out on tour. It’s great to be back. So you guys were hanging out this entire time, but never thought to jam together? I mean, we weren’t hanging out every week. The boys got families, and we don’t live so close to each other. We’d see each other every so often, but it would always be a situation where we’d be out, like for dinners, so you don’t really take your guitars out with ya. It just wasn’t the right time, and we just never got around to it because we were all busy getting on with life, I suppose. As a trio you reached tremendous heights in 2000 with “Back Here.” At what point during your rise did you realize the whole NoEXIT thing might be something bigger any of you had imagined? We were all kind of young, and signing this record deal, we were all kind of head in the clouds, you know, just like what’s going on here? But I think one of those moments is when a song on the radio gets picked up and turned into a hit song, and you see the ripple effect of that happening. I remember we were doing all kinds of little shows, and stuff, just trying to get out to people, and we did a few TV (shows), but we went to this mall, I think it was Glendale, in LA, just to do a little show, we were doing something with KODAK, I think, and it was crazy. There was security, people couldn’t get in the mall, police were there, it was just rammed. We were like wow, something’s happened here. Something’s changed here. I think that was the moment for us when we were like wow, buckle up.
vimeo
Is there any way to prepare for something like that? No. Especially at such a young age. It was a whirlwind. We were all over the world. It was crazy. And once you have a hit song, of course it happens fast, and everybody wants ya, everybody wants to see ya, everybody wants you on their show. It’s crazy. I don’t think you could ever be prepared, physically, or mentally, for that, really. It had to be nice to have two good friends to go through that with, versus potentially going through it as a solo artist. Oh totally. I do a lot of solo stuff myself, and don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy it, but my favorite time is when I’m on stage with the boys, or I’m stage with 3T, or the band /\HTS. It’s a lot more fun going on tour with your friends. It’s definitely good to have someone there to go through the journey with ya.
Tumblr media
Do you have a favorite piece of memorabilia from those years that’s either on your wall, or in your closet, that sparks really great memories? Hmm, good question. I’ve kept a lot of the stuff, and some of the things the fans made for us. I kept the NoEXIT name tag from the Jay Leno show. I think that’s on the back of my studio door in England. I love that you kept some of the fan stuff. So there was a screaming, crying, 14 year old, who’s now 30, and you still have something she made for you. Oh yeah. Some of the fans used to make elaborate, gorgeous, wooden bound, scrapbooks with all kinds of clippings. It was so beautiful. We’re lucky to have some great fans, and they’ve made us some lovely gifts over the years, so yeah, I definitely kept that stuff.
You’ve had a successful solo career, but in terms of NoEXIT, you were at the height of it all in 1999, but were done as a band in 2003. That sort of meteoric ascent and immediate ending can wreak havoc on a person’s mental well being. A lot of so-called friends can disappear once the party stops. Was there ever a dark time for you? You know what, to be totally honest, yeah. We were going at 110 miles an hour for so long, and then to stop … The first thing I did with TST was maybe 2007, so for like 3 years there, yeah, I was a little bit lost. You kind of get a little bit lost sometimes, and that was definitely one time, for me, where I had a little bit of a wobble. I remember having some anxiety, and even panic attacks at the time. It was pretty horrible, but I got through that, and you get past these things. It happens to a lot of people, and I think a lot of people are maybe scared to talk about it, or don’t want to talk about it, but that’s the best thing to do at times like that. For a couple of years it was a bit of a weird time, I spent a lot of time with family, but then you come out the other end stronger, and you get on. You get past these things in life, but they do definitely make you stronger. So family helped you through. Having people you could bounce some concerns off of. I think your family is always your ground, it’s always the core, the solid foundation of everything. In life, you’ve always got your family, no matter what. So I think just staying around family, close friends, at times like that (is important) … but yeah, (if you’re feeling lost) go and speak to somebody about it. Earlier, you mentioned working with TST. You’ve done a lot of work in the EDM world. What have been some of the major differences you’ve seen between working in the pop world, in the TRL era, and working in the EDM world, in this Electric Daisy Carnival era? It comes down to the music, always. After I got over that little low after the band, I was starting to have so many ideas that I was itching to get into something. I started putting a few demos out on Myspace, and I found my mojo back. I was writing a lot of songs, and TST actually got in touch with me on Myspace. I was more listening to rock music, and pop music, so a friend of mine said, “Wow, TST is really big. He’s a massive DJ,” so I said I’ll check him out. I checked him out online, and of course he was playing stadiums, and it was a huge massive show, so I was like wow, I think this could be a lot of fun. We wrote a song together (“In the Dark”), it ended up being a big hit for him, and the album (The Elements of Life) went on to get nominated for a Grammy. So yeah, it was a great. That was my first intro to it, and I was lucky enough to work with lots of different people in the dance scene. The music industry is a people business, so (with pop and EDM) you’re just dealing with different people, but the songwriting craft is still the same whether you’re writing an EDM song, or a pop song for the TRL crowd.
vimeo
We’re gonna rewind a bit. You mentioned Myspace, which was a great platform for musicians. Would you say it kind of helped you launch your solo career? Definitely, because at the time I was coming out of a backlash, kind of. The boy band era was coming to an end, and people were like, “We’re not signing boy bands anymore,” and I said, “It’s not a boy band kinda thing.” So I was like, do you know what, I’m gonna put some stuff out myself. I just put demos up on Myspace, and TST picked it up, and the rest is history. Have you been a part of any of the major EDM festivals? From what I’ve heard those can be some wild events. Yeah, I’ve done some of the big trance festivals in Europe, and Poland. I’ve done Ultra all over the world. I’ve toured with TST on his huge world tour. I’ve toured with AvB on his world tour. So yeah, luckily I’ve been all over, and gotten to do some of these. They’re a lot of fun.
vimeo
Do you have an especially interesting memory of an EDM crowd, or crowd member? Not a particular member. Definitely some crowds were crazier than others. It’s all about what time your slot is on stage at one of these festivals. Are you saying even those crowds peter out after a certain hour? It seems like they can go all night. In some places, yes, but in some places, no. In Russia people will dance until the last beat of the last song, even if that is 7 in the morning, whereas in England, at 2 or 3 in the morning people start to just wobble on home. {laughs} Not gonna lie, at age 40 I’m kinda liking the English way of doing things. Oh yeah. Me, too. {laughs} Finally, what’s one thing that you want to see, or do, that you haven’t experienced yet? I would like to go to New Zealand, and I would like to go to Iceland. Those are a couple places that I’ve never been to that I want to go to, so I’m gonna try to make that happen. Iceland isn’t usually on a lot of tour itineraries. I know, it just looks so beautiful. It looks amazing. I just want to take my camera there, and go and hang out. It looks ridiculously gorgeous.

FSYY 1 001 - King Zhou and the Goddess Nu Wa
The Shang Dynasty replaced the Xia Dynasty and ruled China for nearly 650 years. The Shang court produced twenty-eight kings of whom King Zhou was the last.
Before King Zhou ascended the throne, he and his father, King Di Yi, and many civil and military officials were walking in the royal garden one day, viewing the blooming peonies, when suddenly the Flying Cloud Pavilion collapsed and a beam flew towards them. Rushing forward, King Zhou or then Prince Shou, caught the beam and replaced it in a display of miraculous strength. Deeply impressed, Prime Minister Shang Rong and Supreme Mei Bo advised King Di Yi to name him Crown Prince.
When King Di Yi passed away after thirty years on the throne, Crown Prince Shou was immediately crowned king to rule the country in his father's place. King Zhou established his capital at Zhaoge, a metropolis on the Yellow River. The king appointed Grand Tutor Wen Zhong to be in charge of civil affairs and Huang Feihu, Prince for National Pacification and of Military Prowess, to supervise military affairs. In this way, the king hoped the nation would live in peace under a civil administration backed up by the military. The king placed Queen Jiang in the Central Palace; Concubine Huang in the West Palace and Concubine Yang in the Fragrant Palace. They were all virtuous and chaste in their behavior and mild and gentle in manner.
King Zhou ruled his country in peace, and was respected by the neighboring states. His people worked happily in their different professions, and his peasants were especially blessed by favorable winds and rains. There were 800 marquises in the country who offered their allegiance to four dukes, each of whom ruled over 200 of these marquises on behalf of King Zhou. There four dukes were: the East Grand Duke Jiang Huanchu, the South Grand Duke E Chongyu, the West Grand Duke Ji Chang and the North Grand Duke Chong Houhu.
In the second month of the seventh year of the reign of King Zhou, a report reached Zhaoge of a rebellion of seventy-two marquises in the North Sea district, and the grand Tutor Wen Zhong was immediately ordered to lead a strong army to suppress the rebels. One day when King Zhou was holding court, Shang Rong stepped out from the right row, knelt and said, “Your humble Prime Minister Shang Rong begs to report something urgent to Your Majesty. Tomorrow is the 15th day of the third month, the birthday of the Goddess Nu Wa, and Your Majesty should honor her and hold a ceremony at her temple.”
“What has Goddess Nu Wa done that a great king such as myself is obliged to go to her temple and worship her?” King Zhou asked.
“Goddess Nu Wa's been a great goddess since ancient time and possesses saintly virtues. When the enraged demon Gong Gong knocked his head against Buzhou Mountain, the northwest section of Heaven collapsed and the earth sunk down in the southeast. At this critical moment, Nu Wa came to the rescue and mended Heaven with multi-colored stones she obtained and refined from a mountain,” Shang Rong explained. “She's performed this great service of the people, who've built temples to honor her in gratitude. Zhaoge in fortune to have the change to worship this kind goddess. She'll ensure peace and health tot he people and prosperity to the country; she'll bring us timely wind and rain and keep us free from famine and war. She's the proper guardian angel for both the people and the nation. So I make bold to suggest that Your Majesty honor her tomorrow.”
“You're right, Prime Minister. I'll do as you advise.”
Returning to his residential palace, King Zhou ordered a notion be issued that His Majesty, together with his civil and military officials, were to make a pilgrimage to worship Goddess Nu Wa at her temple the next day.
It would have been better if he hadn't gone at all, for it was this very pilgrimage that caused the fall of the Shang Dynasty, making it impossible for the people to live in peace. It was as if the king had tossed a fishing line in to a big river and unexpectedly caught numerous disaster leading to the loss of both his throne and his life.
The king and his entourage left the palace and made their way through the south gate of the capital. Every house they passes was decorated with bright silk, and the sheets were scented for ht eking by burning incense. The king was accompanied by 3,000 cavalrymen and 800 royal guards under the command of General Huang Feihu, Prince for National Pacification and of Military Prowess and followed by all the officials of the royal court.
Reaching the Temple of Goddess Nu Wa, King Zhou left his royal carriage and went to the main hall, where he burned incense sticks, bowed low with his ministers and offered prayers. King Zhou then wandered about the hall, finding it splendidly decorated in gold and other colors. Before the statue of the goddess stood golden lads holding pennants, and the jade lasses holding S-shaped jade ornaments which symbolized peace and happiness. The jade hooks on the curtain hung obliquely, like new crescent moons suspended in the air, and hundreds of fine phoenixes embroidered on the curtain appeared to be flying towards the North Pole. Beside the altar of the goddess, made of fragrant wood, cranes and dragons were dancing in the scented smoke rising from the gold incense burners and the sparkling flames of the silvery candles.
As King Zhou was admiring the splendors of the hall, a whirlwinds suddenly blew up, rolling back the curtain and exposing the image oft he goddess to all. She was extremely beautiful, much more than flowers, more than the fairy in the moon palace, and certainly more than any woman in the world. She looked quite alive, smiling sweetly at the king and staring at him with joy in her eyes.
Her utter beauty bewitched King Zhou, setting him on fire with lust. He desired to possess her, and thought to himself in frustration, “Through I'm wealthy and powerful and have concubines and maid servants filling my palace, there‘s none as beautiful land charming as this goddess." He ordered his attendants to bring brush and ink and wrote a poem on the wall near the image of the goddess to express his admiration and deep love for her. The poem ran like this:
The scene is gay with phoenixes and dragons,
But they are only clay and golden colors.
Brows like winding hills in jade green,
Sleeves like graceful clouds, you're
As pear blossoms soaked with raindrops,
Charming as peonies enveloped in mist.
I pray that you come alive,
With sweet voice and gentle movements,
And I'll bring you along to my palace.
When he finished writing, Prime Minister Shang Rong approached him. “Nu Wa's been a proper goddess and the guardian angel for Zhaoge, I only suggested that you worship her so that she would continue to bless the people with timely rains and favorable winds and ensure that they'll continue to live in peace. Bur with this poem, you've not only shown tour lack on sincerity on this trip but have insulted her as well.” He demanded, “This isn't the way a king should behave. I pray you wash this blasphemous poem off the wall, lest you be condemned by the people for your immortality.”
“I found Goddess Nu Wa so beautiful that I wrote a poem in praise of her, and that’s all. Hold your tongue. Don’t forget that I am the king. People will be only too glad to read the poem I wrote in my own hand, for it enables them to identify the true beauty of the goddess.”
King Zhou dismissed him lightly. The other civil and military officials remained silent, no one daring to utter a word. They then returned tot he capital. The king went directly to the Dragon Virtue Court, where he met his queens and con in a happy reunion.
On her birthday, Goddess Nu Wa had left her palace and paid her respects to the three emperors, Fu Xi, Shen Nong and Xuan Yuan. She then returned to her temple, seated herself in the main hall, and received greetings from the golden lads and jade lasses.
Looking up, she saw the poem on the wall. “That wicked king!” She flew in to a rage. “He doesn't think how to protect his country with virtue and mortality. On the contrary, he shows no fear of Heaven and insults me with this dirty poem. How vile he is! The Shang Dynasty's already ruled for over 600 years and is coming to an end. I must take my revenge on him if I'm to assuage my own conscience.”
She took action at once. She mounted a phoenix and headed for Zhaoge.
King Zhou had two sons. One was Yin Jiao, who later became the “Star God Presiding over the Year," and the other Xin Hong, who later became the "God of Grain." As the two gods paid their respects to their father, two red divine beams rose from the tops of their heads and soared high in the sky, blocking the way of the goddess. Looking down through the clouds, Nu Wa at once realized  realized King Zhou had still twenty-eight years  to go before his downfall. She also realized that she could do nothing about it at this moment. Since that would go against the will of Heaven.
The goddess returned to her temple, highly displeased. Back in her palace, Goddess Nu Wa ordered a young maidservant to fetch a golden gourd and put it on the Cinnabar Terrace outside her court. When its stopper was removed, Nu Wa pointed at the gourd with one finger and suddenly a thick beam of brilliant white light rose from the mouth of the gourd and shot up fifty feet into the air. Hanging  from the beam was a multi-colored flag called the Demon Summoning Pennant. As soon as this pennant made its appearance, glittering high up in the sky, all demons and evil sprites, no matter where they were, would gather round.
Moments later, dark winds began to bowl, eerie fogs enveloped the earth, and vicious-looking clouds gathered in the sky. All the demons in the world had arrived to receive her command Nu Wa gave orders that all the demons return home except the three sprites that dwelt in the grave of Emperor Xuan Yuan.
Who were these three sprites? The first was a thousand—year-old female fox sprite; the second was a female pheasant sprite with nine heads; and the third was a jade lute sprite.
“May you live eternally, dear goddess!” the three sprites greeted Nu Wa, kowtowing on the Cinnabar Terrace.
“Listen carefully to my secret orders. The Shang Dynasty's destined to end soon. The singing of the phoenix at Mount Qi augurs the birth of a new ruler in West Qi. This has all been determined by the will of Heaven, and no one has the power to change what must happen. You may transform yourselves into beauties, enter the palace, and distract King Zhou from state affairs. You’ll be richly rewarded forgiving the new dynasty an auspicious start and helping the old one to its downfall. However, you mustn‘t bring harm to the people.”
at the end of her order, the three spirits kowtowed, turned themselves into winds, and flew away.
Since his visit to the Temple of the Goddess Nu Wa, King Zhou had sunk into a deep depression. He ardently admired the beauty of the goddess and, yearning for her day and night, lost all desire to eat and drink. He had no passion for his queen, his concubines, or the numerous maids in his palace. They now all appeared to him like lumps of clay. He would not be bothered with state affairs.
One day, he remembered Fei Zhong and You Hun, two minion courtiers who would flatter and slander as he pleased. King Zhou sent for Fei Zhong, and the latter appeared in no time.
“I went to worship Goddess Nu Wa recently,” King Zhou began. “She’s so beautiful I believe she has no rival in the world, and none of my concubines is to be compared with her. I’m head over heels in love, and feel very sad as I cannot get her. Have you any ideas with which to comfort me?”
“Your Majesty! With all your honor and dignity, you're the most powerful and the richest man in the world. You possess all the wealth within the four seas, and are virtuous as the sage emperors Yao and Shun. You may have anything you wish for, and you should have no difficulty in satisfying your desires. You can issue an order tomorrow demanding 100 beauties from the grand dukes. You’ll then have no trouble finding one as beautiful as Goddess Nu Wa,” Fei Zhong suggested. King Zhou was delighted. He said, “Your suggestion appeals to me greatly. I’ll issue the order tomorrow. You may return home for the time being. ”He then left the throne hall and returned to his royal chambers to rest.
If you wish to know what happened thereafter, please read the following chapter.

Grosshadern LMU Clinic Campus in Munich

Grosshadern LMU Clinic Campus
Design: C.F. Møller Architects and HENN Location: Munich, Germany
C.F. Møller Architects and HENN win first prize for the new Grosshadern LMU Clinic Campus. The architects secured the unanimous vote of the jury for their design, thereby prevailing against 17 other planning teams. For the new campus they plan to transform the existing structures completely and create a green, connected and friendly environment for future-proof medical care, research and teaching.
“The jury’s unanimous decision for the team HENN | C.F. Møller Munich/Aarhus design means that it is undoubtedly worthy of the first prize. The design meets the high expectations in terms of functionality, section-by-section realisation, commercial viability and technical feasibility in full. The structure of the work is robust and spacious enough to allow future adjustments and development without the loss of the fundamental concept. Simultaneously, the design succeeds in terms of its external and internal structuring through the chosen colour and material concept in meeting the requirements of patients, visitors and staff for a comfortable and person-focused atmosphere within the hospital.” says Markus Hammes, BDA (Federation of German Architects) freelance architect and chairman of the jury.
The largest public construction project in Bavaria The Grosshadern Campus is part of the Ludwig Maximilian University clinic (LMU), one of the leading national and international medical sites. The new building comprises a total of six new clinical centres and is the largest public construction project in Bavaria since the hospital was built in the 1960s/70s. The current planning competition encompasses the first construction phase of the large-scale project, and involves the realisation of three centres, the cardiopulmonary vascular centre, the oncology centre and the new diagnostic centre, which will be built on an area totalling around 140,000 m². This initial construction stage will constitute around 60 percent of the total construction volume of the new hospital and will be financed by the State of Bavaria with around one billion euros. An abdominal, pelvic and transplant centre, a head centre and a musculoskeletal centre, as well as additional facilities for research, teaching and logistics will be built in subsequent construction stages.
“We are very proud to have been announced as the winning team and we are looking forward to continuing our work in collaboration with HENN and the rest of the team as well as LMU to realise a new building and a campus which meet the structural demands and requirements of a university hospital of the future and at the same time enhance the urban image based on Healing Architecture principles and by putting people in the centre, says Klavs Hyttel, architect and partner at C.F. Møller Architects.
Green spaces and high amenity quality While the primary focus is on medical excellence, the park forms the core element of the design, serving as a meeting place for visitors, patients, scientific staff and students. The intertwining of the park – the lung of the site – and the spine – the logistical heart of the hospital – is what makes this masterplan special. By greening the roof of the main axis and including numerous terraces, natural elements are systematically brought into the structural core of the hospital. The landscape concept is intended to promote atmospheric diversity as well as patient well-being and recovery. This idea is in line with a basic principle of contemporary healthcare architecture: the focus is on the human being.
A modular and permeable building ensemble on a human scale The existing buildings will be successively demolished after completion of the 1st construction phase and will make way for a coherent and accessible ensemble of buildings. A smaller-scale silhouette similar to that of surrounding buildings transforms the existing uniform “healthcare factory” so that it has a varied, urban and human appearance. The total volume of the new large structure is made up of modules which, despite a high degree of spatial efficiency, convey the image of an open, permeable development. The modular masterplan can be easily expanded as needed, ensuring a high degree of flexibility and sustainability for the campus. Inner courtyards and gardens allow for maximum daylight and very good ventilation, resulting in high amenity quality.
“The extremely cooperative collaboration between the offices of C.F. Møller and HENN, as well as the specialists from the various disciplines, makes this outstanding design for the creation of tomorrow’s medicine possible. The well thought-out structure represents flexibility and usage variance and promotes exchange and communication. In addition, the integration of nature as a healing element as well as ecological sustainability is of particular importance to us. The new approaches will have a noticeably positive impact on every patient’s stay and will raise the working conditions in nursing and research, and thus medical care, to a new level. We look forward to continuing the jointly developed ideas and concepts for shaping the university hospital of the future.” says Marcus Fissan, Partner at HENN.
A clear masterplan for a high-quality site The masterplan focuses on short distances, clear orientation and an attractive design. The new building for the LMU Klinikum at the Großhadern Campus will comprise a total of six new clinical centers. The oncology and the research/teaching building form the eastern and western endpoints of the spine, which is the main connecting element for all the medical centres. The generously-sized entrance area opens up perpendicularly to this main axis, giving expression to the new, high-quality site.
The new Campus Grosshadern is characterised by maximized amenity quality with accentuated green spaces and lighting, as well as short distances and a modular site-layout system that will allow the hospital to develop both sensibly and sustainably.

In 2014, NJPW released a few short documentaries on World, before Wrestle Kingdom 9.  They were all released in versions with and without english subtitles; this is my transcription of the english subtitles on part one of Hiroshi Tanahashi’s.  I’ve done this before with plain screencaps interspersed but I wanted to redo it with .gifs, ‘cos I really love these little videos, and ‘cos I can now, and also, just ‘cos.  :)
This is Part 2.  Part 1 is here.
Teaser:
Question: What if Tanahashi Jr. became a pro  wrestler?!
HT:  “Well, right now he plays soccer.  When I  ask him if he wants to be a pro wrestler, he  answers ‘No way!’ When I ask why, he says,  ‘It looks like it hurts.’  It certainly does.
Tumblr media
Q:  “What if he does become a pro wrestler?”
HT:  “Well, then the second coming would happen this century.”
(the little opening sequence plays; the theme of Tana’s documentary is  Tana’s passion for wrestling and his love for the fans)
Caption: 1.4 Towards Tokyo Dome
HT:  “I love the Tokyo Dome but I’m not  convinced yet.  To explain why, you’ve got  these great crowds at Korakuen Hall and  Ryogoku but so many more people come to the  Dome, right?  The crowd at the Dome get up and go crazy for great matches that I watched  when I was a fan.  Like the 10.9 show or  Inoki’s retirement match, that reaction is  what I want to draw out.”
Caption: November 20th, Gold’s Gym, Shinjuku,  Tokyo.  Tanahashi continues training towards  1.4
(we’re inside Gold’s Gym, watching Tana go through his workout)
Tumblr media
HT:  “The target is 300.  Six days a week to  reach that goal.  I did it two years in a row  but last year I only did 291.  This year is shot.  (he leans on a railing, sighing at the tragedy of it all)  Even if I work hard from now on I won’t make 300.  I’ll do 3-A-Days!”
Tumblr media
Caption: How to make time
HT:   “You have to manage your time wisely.   So, when I’m out doing local promoting I  always carry my workout gear and a change of  clothes with me.  And so, if I get like a 2  hour break, I ask our staff where the gym is  and just go there.  Footwork is really  important.  And then I’ll appear on TV or  radio soaked in sweat. (laughs)”
Tumblr media
(more of Tana working out)
Tumblr media
Caption: Training outstanding talent
HT:  “Of course, I want to be bigger.  In a short term, I train hard to increase  flexibility.  Then I add more muscle mass.”
Caption: Ideal Body
HT:  “For me, it’s the Dynamite Kid.  If I could get a body like his, I want to be like that.  That was number one.”
Q:  Have you gotten close to having a body like the Kid?
HT: Not even close.  The Kid in his prime, he had big shoulders and huge traps, also he was just so quick.  I don’t have that kind of  body yet.  I’ve still got a way to go.
Tumblr media
Caption: A peek at his strict eating habits
(Tana buys a little bento box  at the  counter and sits down at a window seat for  lunch)
Tumblr media
Q:  “Tanahashi, what’s this?”
HT:  “This is Gold Gym’s chicken breast boxed lunch.  Brown rice, boiled chicken breast and broccoli.  It’s really good.  And healthy.”
Tumblr media
(he breaks his hashi up, briefly clasps his hands together and says “Itadakimasu,” then  starts eating)
Tumblr media
Q:  “This is your lunch?”
HT:  “Yes”
Q:  “You’re pretty strict about your eating  habits, right?”
HT:  “There’s a difference when you’re being strict and when you’re not. You can feel it in your body right away.  I really like sweets, and there are times I eat at night,  but…building your body is a gradual process.  You just have to keep at it.  So you can eat something bad one day, and still be ok.  Changes take place over time, both good and bad.”
Caption: Meals during national tours
HT:  “During national tours…I don’t eat much  at night.  At company dinners I eat  selectively.  Like edamame or lean sashimi.   When there’s just convenience stores, then my  go-to food is canned mackerel.  I just eat them one after another.  I can’t stop.   (laughs)”
Tumblr media
Q:  “Is ramen completely out of the question?   Do you like ramen?”
HT:  “I love ramen and I want to eat some.  I crave them!  But it’s ok.  The Dome is  waiting.”
Caption: Bodybuilding for 1.4
HT:  “I always strive to be in my best shape  for the Dome…and whatever nerves I get, I put to use.  I have to or else.  I bundle up all my feelings and take the to the Dome,  where I release them.”
Caption: Tanahashi’s 1.4 has already started.
(Tana walks out of the gym.)
Caption: to the town of Omotesand?
Caption: Enjoying a little free time
HT:  “I used to go shopping a lot when I was  younger, but now it’s just rarely.  I love  shopping, but, it takes too long, it takes  twice as long as other people.  And they  never have my size.  (laughs)”
(It’s raining again - Tana is standing out in  it with his umbrella, eating a protein bar.   “Gotta get my fix,” he says)
Tumblr media
Caption: It started raining so we headed to a  special place.
Caption: November 20th, Rela Quwa Omotesando
(Tana enters some kind of medical office, probably a physiotherapy place,   various greetings.  Inside, he’s seated filling out forms, and answering the doctor’s questions)
Tumblr media
HT:  “My neck is bad.”
Doctor:  “Yes”
HT:  “In my neck and waist…I can barely turn  my neck.”
(the doctor, Hiroki Mihara, makes hmmm  noises, and asks about injuries)
HT:  “Some fractured bones in my hand.  My  knuckles, both right and left cross  ligaments, and front and back ligaments too  (indicating his knees)”
Tumblr media
HM:  “I see.  Anything else?”
HT:  “Last August, I injured my neck really badly, but it’s better.  There’s something near the base of my head that works like a  catch and must be forcibly reset each time.”
Tumblr media
HM:  “Were you dropped?”
HT:  “From really high up, it was bad.  (chuckles)”
Tumblr media
HM:  “Yes.  So mostly the neck?”
HT:   “Yeah, and my back is stiff in the  morning.  It feels like it might pop when I  get up slowly.”
(quick cut.  Absent his coat, Tana sits on  the exam table with a pained look while the doctor examines & manipulates his back.  Some movements must be painful, because Tana’s grimacing and hissing.)
Tumblr media
HM (about the alignment of his back):  “This is straight.”
HT:  “So it’s off, to the left.”
HM:  “Yeah”
HT:  “I didn’t realize.”
HM (checking his shoulders):  “The shoulders  are off, too.”
HT:  “Now that you mention it...”
HM (turning Tana):  “It goes this way.”
HT:  “So it seems.”
HM (indicating right):  “This side.  (he  manipulates Tana’s left arm) You need to  stretch more.”
Tumblr media
HT:  “My left shoulder is really bad, the right  is still ok.”
HM (checking Tana’s right shoulder):   “Yes, so  it seems.  What about your neck?”
HT:  “Both sides really hurt.”
HM:  “With your shoulders like this…(indicating a position)...your neck is straight.”
HT:   “Really?  (he makes a “Yeeeech” noise)”
HM:  “It really is yes.  Do this and you can  move.”
HT:  “I see.”
HM (indicating Tana’s troublesome left  shoulder):  “Let’s do this shoulder.”
HT:  “Yes please.”
Caption: Toward 1.4 making the condition of  his injured body as good as possible.
(Tana is flat out on the exam table while the doctor works on his limbs)
Tumblr media
HM: “Your muscles are great.”
HT (muffled, he’s on his stomach while the  doctor works on his back): “They’re too soft.”
HM:  “Piable.”
(Question from a NJPW staffer, until now  silent):  “Big difference?”
HM:  “Yes, completely different.  Comparing top athlete’s muscles to others, even though they’re soft, they’re more pliable, which  means they respond easily to loosening.  Your  muscles will loosen up right away. If your muscles were more rigid, you’d get much stiffer quickly.  And your joints are much  looser than I expected.”
HT (still muffled):  “Many people think that  pro wrestlers aren’t that flexible.”
(time passes, Tana is on his back now while  the doctor tends to his left shoulder.  When  we pan up to his face, he looks both like he’s in slight pain and like he’s on a one way magic carpet ride to Blisstown, population: Tanahashi)
Tumblr media
HT:  “Amazing, I feel it…”
HM:  “I can move it now.”
HT (indicating with his right arm for comparison):  “Before it only moved to here.”
HM:  “I’m surprised you could move it.”
HT:  “But it’s fixed now.”
Tumblr media
HM:  “It’s been a long time.”
HT:  “Yes it was.  It hurt so bad.  I could hardly move it by myself.  It even hurt just to stretch it.”
Caption: The injured body
(Tana is on his side while the doctor works  his right shoulder hard.  He’s not in  Blisstown anymore; I guess the right wasn’t as ok as he thought)
Tumblr media
HT (voiceover, after the session):  “When you are performing for others, you have to  possess this inner strength.  When people  come to see you perform, as a pro wrestler,  there is this desire to make them happy and  enthusiastic.  You have to perform despite  the pain.”
Tumblr media
HM (while working on Tana’s neck):  “There are some pro wrestlers who continue on even while  injured.”
HT:  “In fact, I had to continue wrestling after suffering whiplash.  It was in the big tournament this summer, I went on even though  I couldn’t move my neck.”
(transcriber’s note: fuck you, Fale!)
HM:  “I’ll do your neck thoroughly.”
Tumblr media
(shots of the session continue while Tana  does another voice over.  He has a sizable scar on his left elbow, probably from some surgery or other)
Caption: Body care of a 38 year old
HT:  “When I was younger, I’d hit the gym without any preparation.  But as I got older,  I started stretching before and after. Also,  this might sound strange, but while showering  after finishing my workout, I would say  ‘thank you’ to my muscles as I washed my  body.  (he starts to laugh)”
Tumblr media
(the session concludes.  Tana is stretching experimentally, testing his restored mobility)
Tumblr media
HM:  “You were in bad shape, especially on your left side, but you’ll feel better now.”
HT:  “I see.”
HM:  “To be honest, your whole body was out of  line, but another (session) or two and you’ll be fine.”
HT (smiling, knowing he’ll probably delay too  long the next time too):  “I’ll come again.”
(Tana takes a selfie with the doc, because of  course he does)
Tumblr media
Caption: Suddenly, an outstanding talent  comes…
(a Very Tall Kid walks in.  One of the clinic  staff, he’s 22 years old and 6'2.  Tana looks like all his christmasses have come at once,  and immediately goes into Recruitment Mode.)
Tumblr media
HT:  “New Japan is recruiting new members, so  come!”
(the kid starts to laugh)
HM:  “He’s 6'2, definitely.”
HT:  “He’ll get bigger.”
HM:  “You’re only 22, right?”
(the kid nods, he’s past speaking for a  moment but grinning incandescently at Tana.   He kinda reminds me of Okada a bit, the way he’s grinning & giggling)
Tumblr media
The Kid:  “Yes.  I want to bodybuild.”
HM:  “Start with bodybuilding.  You can always  do both, so start with that.”
HT:  “Amazing!  6'2 is really tall for a  Japanese.”
The Kid, to Tana:  “Do I have to be your size?”
HT:  “You are big enough now.”
(Tana takes a selfie with The Kid, because of  course he does)
Tumblr media
(outside again)
Caption: January 4, 2015;  Standing on the  main stage of the Tokyo Dome 5 years in a  row.
HT:  “I feel like New Japan Pro Wrestling…is  riding on my shoulders.  ‘I love you four  years in a row.’ is what I want to continue.   Until I’m told, it’s enough.”
Caption: VS Okada Kazuchika
HT:  “What makes Okada so great and popular  nowadays is, like me, we have this great  connection with our fans.  And Okada’s motto  has always been ‘Keep evolving!’  Okada’s  popularity is already staggering, so facing  someone like Tanahashi may not be enough for  Okada.  What can I do?  Evolve.  I will  evolve.  Okada and the fans want that.  What  can I do to make pro wrestling more exciting?   Be stronger and outrageous.  If we make pro  wrestling interesting, its popularity will  continue to grow…”
Caption: 1.4 The Moment of victory
Tumblr media
HT (hums for a second):   “In kanji, ‘bliss’ is  written with ‘climax’ and ‘good fortune.’  I  wonder…for a wrestler it’s the peak.   Realizing your dreams of becoming a champion,  in a place like the Tokyo Dome, and saying “I love you all,” that is bliss.  To go far  beyond the confines of the Tokyo Dome, doing  what I love as a pro wrestler, I want to continue to savor new and exciting  experiences for years to come.”

Three Seattle Icons and other heart-wrenching stories - brunch feature
Tumblr media
Who remembers Frasier, the bumbling psychiatrist with a radio show and an oddly-named brother called Niles? This sitcom of the ’90s – laughter track notwithstanding – appealed to the “intelligent viewer” of the time, quite unlike the much-talked about feature film set in the same city in North West America almost two decades later. 50 Shades Of Grey showcased helicopter travel off the top of the shiny new skyscrapers of Seattle with as much aplomb as Frasier used the satellite tower in its opening graphics. Why would anyone want to travel to Seattle? Isn’t it a “business town” with “bad weather” that’s best characterised by “techies, aviation geeks and their extended visiting families?”You’re right. You’re also terribly wrong.I landed up in Seattle by chance. A Singapore Airlines flight flew me “the wrong way” and brought me eastwards to Seattle. (I say “wrong way” because Indians still tend to fly to the US westwards via Europe, or utilise the fantastic connections in the Middle East. The good part: I arrived in a great mood.)SQ flies its new A350 on this route, and with its morning departure and flat beds, the product competes with the legendary SQ service for top spot. Unfortunately, someone (not me!) had requested a non-vegetarian Hindu meal for me, though the crew tried to rustle up an alternative. They also offered me double dessert: I had the sinful cheesecake and also the ras malai that had been part of my pre-booked meal. I landed a happy man. The short trip to Seattle started with proof that the city was, in fact, a small town at heart. For which other major metropolis will take you away from its spanking new skyscrapers to a modest bazaar and call that the tourist hotspot?Coffee and morePike Place Market is Stop Number One for every Seattle tourist, and thankfully, it is still frequented by enough locals to ensure it’s not a total trap. Stalls selling seafood, veggies and flowers compete for your attention with street performers whose time has been meticulously charted at strategic spots. What wins at Pike Place, however, are the food tours; sure, they’re large-proportioned, messy and all-American, but you could run back to your hotel to burn it all off.

The Starbucks café around Pike Place is mecca for it’s fanatics ( Shutterstock ) Across the street from the market is one of the three brands Seattle is known for. Starbucks claims its first ever café opened on this street, which is only partly true, because the “first café” was actually housed in a building down the road. But you’ll see a line of Starbucks-fanatics (note: I call them Starbucks fans, not coffee lovers – there’s a difference! – and I count myself amongst them) waiting in line to get in at any time during the day. Me? I skipped the queue, took some pics in the doorway, then went to the Starbucks round the corner and got myself the same coffee I’d have gotten here anyway!Interestingly, it was in a Seattle store that I was served my cold Frappuccio drink and asked, ‘Do you need a straw?’ It took me a few moments to realise the new caps were designed so one could now sip from the cup. No need for single use plastic straws! #AttaBoyRound the corner from this “first Starbucks” was another line of tourists, and this one I chose not to skip. This led to a store called Pike Place Chowder. Open just a few hours every afternoon and selling a decent version of what could be the “dish of Seattle,” this restaurant has perfected the art of playing demand and supply to its advantage.
Tumblr media
If the signature dish on Singapore Airlines is the satay (right), the dish of Seattle is the chowder (left) ( Shutterstock ) Talking of tourist traps, would you go to the Seattle Tower? I usually pick one of the top three “traps” when I visit a city, and it’s usually the one that gives me ideas on how to break away. This tower turned out to be a pleasant surprise: newly renovated, with a revolving base, a transparent floor and some cool selfie spots. Don’t miss the one where a camera installed in a building a mile away zooms in on the tower and to your face! Worth more than an Instagram story for sure!Right next door is the Chihuly Garden and Glass installation that may seem like a promotion for a living artist, but gets you some extremely post-worthy pictures. With flying coloursOn the afternoon of Day Two, I set off to discover another “brand” Seattle is known for: Boeing. The aircraft-maker, until recently one of the most profitable in the world, started operations from a suburb called Everett just outside Seattle, and still has a sizable base there. The factory is an aviation geek’s delight, and is suitably serviced with hourly tours of what they claim is “the largest factory in the word by volume.”
Tumblr media
Walk through out-of-service aircraft of different types at the Museum of Flight ( Shutterstock ) A talkative lady Uber driver takes me up to the airfield, leaves me her number and a proposition to “hang out” the next day (I kid you not!). The staff at the welcome desk are friendly: Welcome, they say. You’re early, but we can include you in the earlier group. Only: no cell phones or cameras allowed! We are then escorted to an auditorium, given a brief history of Boeing and a whole lot of instructions, then herded into buses to see the factories. Now I’ve been to airplane manufacturing facilities before, but the one at Everett surpasses all expectation. 747s, 787 Dreamliners, and the narrow-bodied 737s at different levels of completion stare you in the face. Some are just the fuselage, others are getting their wings attached, and watching the mechanised process of a million-odd parts coming together to form one large airplane is magical.
Tumblr media
Art and nature come together at the Chihuly Garden and Glass installation ( Shutterstock ) It is not until Day 3 that I finally walk off the beaten path. And here is the soul of Seattle. Japantown, or Nihonmachi, was a thriving neighbourhood that spanned more than a dozen blocks before the second world war. Then Pearl Harbour happened. One visit to the grim realities of what followed will wash away your notions of America being the “free-est” and fairest of them all. Stories of concentration camps, families torn apart and an entire race almost wiped out tug at your heart. The Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific American Experience is a great place to start. And before you think this is all morose, you’ll see the young Asian volunteers conducting the tours: sure, injustices happened, but they’re well in the past with the promise to never be repeated. You will also learn that while there are Chinatowns and Little Italys the world over, Seattle chooses to be one step ahead and calls this area the “International District,” inclusive of all nationalities, races, cultures and their traditions and quirks to become a richer, more future-forward city instantly. One for the #AVGeekOn the morning of my last day in the city, a photograph in The Seattle Times showed an airfield on the outskirts of the city where the 737 Max airplanes, returned from airlines all over the world, were parked. This new model of the narrow body aircraft by Boeing was found to have a fault a few months ago, which caused two fatal crashes. All the airlines that had purchased the airplane were advised to send them back. Here was a huge airfield with almost 100 of these aircraft from different airlines parked together.
Tumblr media
The Boeing factory is an aviation geek’s delight ( Shutterstock ) The #AvGeek in me was excited. Despite the lack of time, I hopped into an Uber and insisted on being dropped by the side of the airfield. The fence wouldn’t allow me to enter, but with the help of a selfie stick, I got some great pictures anyway. Right next door, I also discovered the Museum of Flight, which has a space pavilion as well as an arena that allows you to walk through out-of-service aircraft of different types: they have a former 707 that served as Air Force One, the iconic Concorde and even the first Boeing 747 ever built!Home feels What’s the third iconic Seattle brand, you ask? Answer: Amazon! But instead of looking for a factory tour for this one, I’d simply recommend a short drive to one of the fancy suburban townships. You will see Indian techies doing well enough for themselves to bring in their families (parents included)… enough to make any Indian visitor feel right at home! The bumbling Frasier and erotic 50 Shades aside, Seattle could well be America’s “small city” that’s on the verge of becoming too big too soon.Follow @JamalShaikh on TwitterFrom HT Brunch, January 12, 2020Follow us on twitter.com/HTBrunchConnect with us on facebook.com/hindustantimesbrunch Read the full article

NoEXIT Unveils Reunion Album Title, Track List: Exclusive
Tumblr media
Quiet since 2003, NoEXIT is making noise again.
Since releasing a new single, "Bullet Train," during April, it's been common knowledge the Liverpool pop trio has its third album -- and first in 17 years -- in the works and expected out during August. Billboard can now exclusively reveal that the album title is Powerstation, featuring 10 new songs from Derek Mcnally, Mark Jeremy Barry and Stephen Adel Burns. The set was produced by the group with Jonathan Radford, Steve Chrisanthou (Corinne Bailey Rae) and Firebox. "Lyrically, this album has grown a little bit from our last album," Mcnally tells Billboard. "The voices have changed slightly -- and not necessarily for the worse. Just changed and matured. And we've all experienced a lot in our lives over the past 16 years." And while Powerstation certainly sounds familiar, there's also musical growth the trio will be revealing as well.
"I think the main thing is we've experimented with some different sounds and some electronic elements on the album," says Mcnally, who since 2012 has been working with 3T in the electronic group /\HTS, which has its own album coming this year and will also be touring during the summer with Howard Jones. "But it's not an electronic album. It's very guitar-led. It's just different flavors, really, experimenting with different techniques of recording, different ways to articulate the (vocal) harmonies in the production process. But on the whole, it's the three of us together, singing that NoEXIT sound. That's the glue of what we do."
Ending an open-ended hiatus that began in 2003, the NoEXIT reunion started during late 2017 and, according to Mcnally, was not forced or foisted upon him, Barry and Burns. "We've remained friends the whole time," he says. "About 18 months ago we got together and were having a jam with guitars, singing a few of the old songs. I posted it on Ello or something -- 'Oh, look who popped in to see me today' -- and (the reaction) was just crazy. We were like, 'Wow, that was a lot of fun,' and we really enjoyed singing together again. It just felt natural, the right time."
NoEXIT -- which has sold more than three million copies of its first two albums, with Billboard Hot 100 hits such as "Back Here Baby" and "Out of My Heart" -- played four reunion dates last year in Liverpool, New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. During May the group also staged a Back Here Tour in the U.S., and Mcnally promises there's more where that came from -- including NoEXIT's first U.S. national television performance on Aug. 20, playing "Bullet Train" on ABC's Good Morning America -- and that the group is a going concern once again.
"Yeah, we're back this time," he says. "We've had such an amazing time together doing the album and doing shows again. We do actually get on as friends; We can spend a lot of time together and not kill each other. We actually love going out on the road and everything, so it's great to be back and we're definitely loving it."
The track list for Powerstation includes:
1. Bullet Train 2. So Far Away 3. No One Like You 4. Uncivil War 5. You Don’t See Me 6. We Can Be Lovers 7. Wolves 8. Falling Up 9. Out Of Time 10. Powerstation

5 day Las Vegas power pass … was it worth it?
There are 34 Attractions, shows, and/or Transportation that are in season that are included with the pass for free Entry. Amongst the 34 Attractions I wanted to go to 24 of them. After 5days and huge rush rush, lack of sleep, increased stress, lack of relaxation, lots of walking and hailing lyft rides I went to 18 Attractions and activities. The remainder 6 activities that I did not have time to attend, I didn’t really care about four of them but there was two that I really wanted to go.
Below is the list of places And Attractions I attended: AT National Atomic Testing Museum BG Bellagio Gallery of Fine Arts in Las Vegas EH Erotic Heritage Museum KS Kiss by Monster mini golf HR Hollywood Cars Museum at Hot Rod City BC Banger Brewing Company - Tour & Beer ST Stratosphere Tower Observation Deck TD The Deuce SZ Sky Zone PH Planet Hollywood Restaurant / $10 credit HD Hoover Dam Motor Coach Tour of LV GK Gene Wood’s Racing Experience - Go Karts ET Eiffel Tower Experience at Paris LV SR Siegfried&Roy’s Secret Garden/Dolphin MO Las Vegas Monorail 2-day pass HI High Roller Las Vegas/ DayTime Ride BB Big Bus Hop on - Hop Off 2 day Ticket DV Divas Featuring Frank Marino
The Six Attractions I did not have enough time to see (listed in my would had wanted to go order): MG Las Vegas Mini Gran Prix Family Fin Center CE Shalimar Wedding Chapel Experience FO Green Savings Card Fashion TM TaylorMade Golf Experience PC pop culture walking tour of Fremont Street LT Legacy Tour at Grand Canyon West
Other attractions that I was not interested in but are included with the pass: VZ VooDoo Zip Line SN southern Nevada Museum of Fine Art NH Las Vegas Natural History Museum RN The roller coaster at New York, New York LH Lion Habitat Ranch LE Countdown Live a escape Games SP Springs Preserve NS Neveda State Museum at Springs Preserve CC VIP Club Crawl LV GS G & S Pawn Shop/Pawn Stars VIP Tour
The following attractions are seasonal but included with pass: PP pool party pass MD Midday Lake Meade sightseeing cruise CB Cowabunga Bay Water Park
Extra Deals & Discounts with power pass: SD LV Show Discounts from SPI Entertainment -Thunder From Down Under -ABGS: Australian Bee Gees Show -Boyz ll Men -Night school 4 Girls HT save $30 Horseback Trail Ride with Lunch TK LasVegasTickets.com
So how much did I save and was it worth it? I save over $300. It's only worth it if you are the type that likes to do many activities and don't mind the hassle of running around all over the city. If you are a more calm, layback person and like to slowly take your time then it's not the best deal for you. So it comes down to what type of vacation you crave. Although I was tired running around, I felt it was worth it for me. But would I do it again a second time? The answer is no. It was too exhausting.
