Batman No Man’s Land Secret Files And Origins Vol 1 #1

We have now reached the last Cass-related comic of the No Man’s Land storyline, and I emphasize comic, because we have an entire novel to read after this. For now, though, let’s dig into Batman No Man’s Land Secret Files and Origins #1!

This is another one of those anthology comics that serve more as encyclopedias rather than actual stories. As a result, two of our Cass cameos come from character sheets. The first one is about the batfamily in general and teaches us nothing new, but puts great emphasis on the fact that Barbara’s glowing endorsement of Cass was fundamental in getting her the role of “Batgirl”.

The second one is specifically about Cass and it includes very few things we haven’t heard or seen before, except that we learn that she was nine years old when she first killed. However, the real killer here are her stats:

Real name: unknown [again, wtf, Batfam?] Occupation: Costumed Adventurer [“Adventurer” – Wtf did these writers think the batfam does during the night? Dig up ancient treasures?] Martial Status: Single [Yes, that typo really is there. I did not make this up.] Ht: 5’ 5’’ [Okay. Let’s wait for her weight.] Wt: 110 lbs. [That means she has a BMI of 18.3. Probably even less since Cass has been shown as being basically nothing but muscle in every panel we’ve seen. And she still only weighs 110 at 5’5’’. Jesus Christ, somebody please feed the Batgirls!!!!] Eyes: Blue [I could dig up the former panels here, but I can safely say I don’t recall a single panel in which her eyes were blue. Not one. Get off your black-haired blue-eyed batkid fetish, writers.] Hair: Black [They had to get something right.]

There are so many things wrong with these stats, it really makes my head spin.

And finally, there is a very short “what if” story that explores what No Man’s Land would be like if it was part of the animated series. It is a very short piece in which Batman and Batgirl watch a mobster lieutenant who is known for carrying a violin case around anywhere he goes getting set upon by a gang who looks ready to take him apart. As it turns out, these guys are just worn down by having spent seven months in No Man’s Land without proper food, showers or music and all they want is for him to play some cords. As it turns out, there really is a violin in the case, rather than a gun or something like that, and the mobster starts playing while everyone looks on, deeply touched. Now I am not sure if the Batgirl in this is supposed to be Cass or Helena, since she is chatty as fuck, but her body language matches Cass’, so I’m gonna count both.
