meet me at midnight.
track four ━━ snow on the beach.
They're stopped somewhere near the top of the wheel, taking pictures of London glimmering underneath their feet when Tobin speaks up. "You're really pretty when you smile." It's a line if Christen's ever heard one, but it's said so gently and earnestly that it does the trick in making her blush. Tobin grins at the reaction. "Even prettier when you blush." "Not so bad yourself," Christen quips in response, tucking her phone into the back pocket of her jeans. Tobin leans over, the point of her elbow poking into the side of Christen's arms. "Just alright?" she fishes. "Incandescent."

TMA: Episode 9, “A Father’s Love”
Summary: Jonathan reads the statement of Julia Montauk, regarding “the actions and motivations of her father, the serial killer Robert Montauk.”
I never understood people's obsession with serial killers. I work with people who are into it, and I never really got it, but I know it’s a pretty big thing. So when Jonathan introduced the episode, I had really low expectations, because I was still pretty new to TMA and kind of expected it to just be some gruesome filler episode catering to those people. I’ve never been happier to be wrong.
This episode is the first of many with a theme I’m going to call “dark religion.” (Technically, Father Burroughs performing the “exorcism" last episode fits this theme as well, but we don’t actually know anything about that yet since his statement is later in the season.) Her father is chanting in what appears to be some kind of ceremony or ritual before stabbing the last heart and fleeing, and Jonathan informs us after the statement of the connection between the symbol on the pendants and the cult “the People’s Church of the Divine Host”.
The arrangement of the hearts in the shed is particularly interesting - 11 along each inner wall and 7 on the wall by the door, totaling 40. 40 is a very biblical number - probably the most well known instance is in Genesis, when it rained for 40 days and 40 nights during the great flood. If the internet is to be believed, there are over 100 references to the number “40″ throughout the Bible, and it “generally symbolizes a period of testing, trial or probation” (https://www.biblestudy.org/bibleref/meaning-of-numbers-in-bible/40.html) (also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/40_(number)). This is especially interesting to me given the anger and reluctance her father shows towards the whole thing in his phone conversation with Rayner, and I got the distinct impression that he was protecting her somehow. He’s willing enough to do the killing and the chanting and whatever creepy ritual he was doing in that shed, but he’s not happy about it. Is he being tested somehow? Or were the ritualized deaths all leading up to something? And why was he taking pictures of the dead? I have so many questions about the nature of his involvement with this cult. (And speaking of those pictures, I would love to know more about those symbols on the faces of the dead - more Sanskrit, perhaps?)
Julia spends a lot of time in this statement painting a picture of her family’s (such as it were) life, and right off the bat it starts off odd - she says that her “memory of early childhood is patchy - mostly isolated images and impressions”. My understanding is that’s pretty unusual (my own memory is shit so I can’t really speak to it myself). Yet she recalls the night her mother went missing and the years following it living alone with her father pretty vividly. Did something happen that caused her to forget large chunks of her life prior to age 7? Her lack of young memories feels like more than flavor text to me.
It’s obvious that there is a reason for her father’s killings that Julia isn’t privy to, and that he had some amount of knowledge of this whole thing before her mom went missing. As soon as he sees her pendant, he checks the water in the kitchen sink and finds it “dirty-looking” and “brackish”, and then left for almost an entire day. Since I doubt we’re ever getting his statement, I can only hope we get a statement from someone who saw him that day, because I would really like to know where he went and what happened.
Also interesting is that no one seemed to really notice that her mom was gone. She didn’t have family or was estranged from them, OK, I can buy that. But despite having only vague memories of her early years, Julia does remember her mother having friends over a lot. It doesn’t seem quite the same as Not-Graham - there’s no pod person replacing her obviously, but also it isn’t like all traces of her vanish. It seems more subtle - she wasn’t erased, she was just...forgotten.
The last two major things I’d like to mention are the pendants with the closed eyes on them (those goddamn eyes again - nothing more to say there, really) and “Detective” Rayner. In episode 7, Wilfred Owen was found lying in the remains of a “Joseph Rayner” for a week and a half before being found and taken to a hospital. In 1917. And the events of this statement happen from about 1990 to 1995. Even if the remains in 1917 weren’t Joseph’s, if he fought in that war he’d be, at a bare minimum, 90 years old when he spoke to Julia on the phone circa 1993. The non-supernatural explanation is that it’s a descendant of Joseph’s - after all, “Detective” Rayner never gave his first name. But this isn’t the first time we’ve seen someone alive and well long after they supposedly died. Yep - Mary Key, alive in 2012 after officially dying in 2008 (episode 4). Or maybe he’s functionally immortal (or immortal-adjacent) like the unaging Agnes in episode 8. Is there something “tethering” Mary Key and Joseph Rayner the way that Agnes seemed to be tethered by that tree?
Random questions I’m also thinking about but that didn’t make it into any of the other paragraphs: What was that blue glow during the ritual in the shed? Why does the approaching monster/evil-coded entity in this statement accompany dirty, brackish water? And what the hell is going to happen when all these eyes open?

GREED WAS DIFFERENT IN THE MIDDLE AGES.
(PLS EXCUSE CAPS, SIGHT ISSUES)
“ Stanford historian Laura Stokes is uncovering how attitudes toward "acceptable greed" have done a turnaround in the past 500 years. Self-serving behavior deemed necessary on Wall Street today might have been despised in medieval Europe. One might even have been murdered for using wealth as a justification for circumventing societal norms. “
I WAS RAISED IN RURAL SCOTLAND. SINCE SCOTLAND IS OWNED BY ENGLAND, THE CONCEPT OF GREED WAS ALWAYS AROUND. LARGELY IN THE FAMILIAR FIGURE OF “THE ESTATE”. THESE ARE LARGE TRACTS OF SCOTTISH LANDSCAPE NORMALLY OWNED AND HELD BY ABSENTEE ENGLISH LANDLORDS.
THEY ARE USED FOR FORESTRY (CASH CROP) HUNTING, SHOOTING AND FISHING (MORE “CASH CROPS”) AND AS THEIR OWN PRIVATE GETAWAYS. PRETTY MUCH LIKE BALMORAL, WHICH QUEEN ELIZABETH, SECOND OF ENGLAND, FIRST OF SCOTS (NOT SCOTLAND..THE SCOTS ACTUALLY HAVE TO GIVE HER CONSENT TO BE THEIR QUEEN AND WHATEVER FECKING EEJITS DID THAT NEED SHOT IMO) AND WHERE CHARLIE RAN AND HID WHEN THE COVID19 SURFACED, PRETENDING TO BE “SELF ISOLATING” WHEN ALL THEY WERE DOING WAS SHOVING HIM SOMEWHERE REMOTE, SO THEY COULD PROTECT THE HEIR TO THE THRONE (DON’T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU READ IN THOSE TRASHY MAGS. ENGLISH ROYALTY HAS A SUPREMELY STRICT INHERITANCE STRUCTURE).
ANYWAY, AYE, *THAT* KIND OF GREED. SO VAST AREAS OF LAND THAT FORMERLY BELONGED TO THE PEOPLE OF SCOTLAND, WHO ELECTED CLAN CHIEFS TO ACT ON THEIR BEHALF, WELL, ALL OF THAT CHANGED WHEN THOSE CLAN CHIEFS WERE BOUGHT OFF BY ENGLISH GOLD AND WAYS AND INSTALLED THE ENGLISH FEUDAL SYSTEM.
NO, I’M NOT A FAN OF ENGLISH GOVERNANCE. IS ANYONE? IF YOU ARE, YOU’RE AN IDIOT OR A TORY. POSSIBLY BOTH. AND I’M LONG PAST THE AGE OF CARING WHAT FOLKS THINK OF ME.
SO, BACK TO GREED. WHAT THIS MEANS IS THAT, IN SCOTLAND, ABSENTEE LANDLORDISM CREATES ISSUES BECAUSE OF GREED FOR LAND. THERE ARE NO NEW HOMES BUILT FOR LOCALS AND THEIR CHILDREN. THIS IN TURN FORCES THE CHILDREN TO LEAVE THE PLACE OF THEIR BIRTH AND GO TRY TO FIND WORK, OFTEN SO FAR FROM HOME MANY OF THEM NEVER RETURN. IT DEPOPULATES COMMUNITIES THAT ONCE WERE TIGHT KNIT AND FULL OF PEOPLE WHO CARED FOR THE COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE. A “TRIBAL” SYSTEM WHICH BENEFITTED EVERYONE, IN WHICH EVERYONE HAD A FAIR SHARE, DID THEIR SHARE OF THE WORK NEEDED TO SURVIVE AND THRIVE, AND ANSWERED ONLY TO THEIR CHIEFTAIN.
ALL THAT WENT WHEN THE CONCEPT OF ENGLISH GREED ENTERED SCOTLAND AND CHANGED THE ENTIRE STRUCTURE OF HIGHLAND SOCIETY. (I’M NOT EVEN GOING THERE WITH THE CLEARANCES OR I’LL BE HERE ALL DAY)
AND THAT, MY FRIENDS, IS THE SHORT VERSION OF “HOW ENGLAND FUCKED UP AND KILLED SCOTLAND”. BY GREED. (IT’S STILL GOING ON, IF ANYONE’S INTERESTED...AN EXAMPLE BEING, 98% OF SCOTLAND’S OIL PROFITS GO TO WESTMINSTER. NEXT TIME THEY SAY THERE’S NO CASH FOR THE NHS ASK BORIS WHERE THOSE PROFITS WENT)
SO, I KNOW FIRSTHAND WHAT AN IMPACT GREED, AS WE KNOW IT TODAY, CAN HAVE ON SOCIETY, FAMILY AND INDIVIDUALS.
MY HISTORICAL INTERESTS GO BEYOND THAT OF PRE-UNION SCOTLAND, AND INTO THE ARCHAEOLOGY, HISTORY AND CULTURES OF THE BRONZE AND IRON AGES. A TIME WHERE GREED AS WE SEE IT TODAY WOULD NOT BE CONDONED.
YES, THE VIKINGS PLUNDERED. THEN THEY TOOK WHAT THEY HAD FOUGHT FOR, SHARED IT OUT (WOULD *YOU* GO A-VIKING IF THERE WAS NOTHING IN IT FOR YE?) AND TOOK THE EXCESS BACK HOME TO IMPROVE YOUR LANDHOLDINGS AND SHARE AMONGST YOUR PEOPLE. (THERE *WERE* THE ODD EXCEPTION. THEY WEREN’T LOOKED KINDLY UPON)
SEE, FOR VIKING AGE PEOPLES, “FUN” WAS IMPORTANT. FEASTING, DRINKING, MORE FEASTING AND DRINKING, THAT WAS A SOCIAL CONSTRUCT THAT FORMED ALLIANCES, (OR BROKE THEM DEPENDING ON HOW PLASTERED A GUEST GOT TO THE POINT HE INSULTED THE HOST) AND REINFORCED FAMILY TIES. TO DO THIS...BECAUSE IN THOSE TIMES AND PLACES, A STINGY HOST WAS NO HOST AT ALL...WEALTH WAS NEEDED. BECAUSE OFTEN, THE ONUS ON GIFT GIVING WAS ACTUALLY ON THE HOST, NOT THE PARTYGOER. AYE, THAT’S RIGHT. THE HOST GAVE PRESENTS TO THOSE ATTENDING HIS FEASTS. AND THE MORE LAVISH THE GIFTS, THE MORE CHANCE OF CEMENTING THAT ALLIANCE, OR FIRMING THOSE TIES.
YOU MIGHT THINK THAT SHALLOW AND IN IT’S OWN WAY, GREED DRIVEN. BUT IT WASN’T. IN THE SAME WAY AS WOMAN (AND MEN!) OF THOSE TIMES WORE THEIR WEALTH, OFTEN WALKING OUT IN EVERY PIECE OF JEWELLERY THEY OWNED. AT ONCE. SO THE WOMEN IN PARTICULAR COULD SAY “LOOK HOW STRONG AND GOOD AT PROVIDING FOR ME MY MAN IS” OR, YES, “LOOK AT HOW F*CKING GREAT I AM AT GETTING MYSELF SORTED* THEN THE LOCAL VIKING HERO OR CHIEFTAIN/KING WOULD GIVE THE MOST LAVISH GIFTS HE COULD. IT WAS A WAY OF SAY “LOOK AT ME. THE GODS FAVOUR ME. AND SINCE OUR GODS ARE KICKASS GODS, THINK HOW DAMN *GOOD* THEY MUST BELIEVE I AM, AS A KING, AS A WARRIOR, AS A MAN, TO BE SO FAVOURED. SO IT DOES YOU GOOD TO HOOK UP WITH ME, JUST REMEMBER THAT”.
(POTTED HISTORY OF WEALTH AND GIFT GIVING IN THE VIKING AGE)
NOWADAYS? WELL...I LOOK AT FOLKS LIKE THE KARDASHIANS, WHO CLAIM TO “WORK HARD” FOR THEIR MONEY BUT IN REALITY, HOW MUCH WILL THEY MAKE WHEN THEIR LOOKS GO? AND WHAT KIND OF A SOCIETY BUYS THEIR GOODS BASED JUST ON A PRETTY FACE? WHAT’S WRONG WITH THAT MINDSET? (I COULD TELL YE’S BUT I MIGHT BE LOCKED OUT OF TUMBLR BY DOING SO).
AND I LOOK AT CORRUPT POLITICIANS, LINING THEIR POCKETS AT THE EXPENSE OF SOCIETY’S MOST VULNERABLE, SO THAT PEOPLE DIE ON A DAILY BASIS OF STARVATION, LACK OF HEALTH CARE OF SHELTER, OR BY BEING ABUSED, MURDERED, AND WELL, YOU GET THE PICTURE. I’M SURE MOST OF YOU KNOW THE SITUATION REGARDING THE DISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH IN YOUR OWN COUNTRIES. CERTAINLY, IN SCOTLAND (I HAVE TO POINT OUT I LIVE IN IRELAND NOW, AS THE ENGLISH GOV WOULDN’T LET ME REMAIN IN MY NATIVE SCOTLAND BECAUSE I MARRIED A DISABLED BELGIAN MAN. BREXSHIT.) ENGLAND GETS THE BULK OF PROFITS FROM SCOTLAND’S NATURAL RESOURCES, TRADE AND INDUSTRY (EVEN TO THE POINT THEY REBRAND SCOTCH WHISKY WITH THE UNION FLAG AND CALL IT “BRITISH” WHICH KINDA MAKES ME FEEL....SICK....)
SO AYE, THIS ARTICLE’S WORTH A READ, I GUESS.
BUT WHAT MIGHT BE MORE IMPORTANT IS THAT THE UPCOMING GENERATION (SORRY GUYS, HAS TO BE YOU. WHEN YOU GET TO MY AGE YOUR ACTIVISM DAYS ARE BEHIND YOU. I JOINED CND AND MARCHED AGAINST NUKES BACK IN THE DAY. DID IT CHANGE ANYTHING? NOT ONE SINGLE THING. BUT DINNAE STOP TRYING PLEASE) ANYWAY, HOPING THE UPCOMING GENERATION, WHO ARE MORE SAVVY THAN SAID POLITICIANS AND ROYALS GIVE THEM CREDIT FOR ON THE WHOLE (KARDASHIAN WORSHIPPERS ASIDE) CAN CHANGE THINGS. BECAUSE AT THE ROOT OF IT ALL IS GREED. CLIMATE ISSUES..GREED FOR ENERGY. MILLIONS STARVING..GREED FOR NATURAL RESOURCES TO SELL ABROAD FOR CASH, GENERALLY. I WON’T GO ON.
AMASSING WEALTH ISN’T, IN ITSELF, A BAD THING. USING IT TO FURTHER STEAL FROM OTHERS IS. USING IT TO LORD IT OVER OTHERS AND DICTATE THEIR LIVES IS.
PERSONAL NOTE: THERE’S MORE OF US..THE POOR FOLKS...THAN THE RICH ELITE.
THEY’RE OUTNUMBERED.
SO SOMEONE TELL ME *WHY* WE ALLOW THEM TO DO WHAT THEY DO TO THE PLANET, TO US, AND TO OUR CHILDREN?
BECAUSE ALL THE “NON VIOLENT PROTESTS” IN THE WORLD CHANGES LITTLE. SOMETIMES, YOU NEED TO SMACK THE BULLY DOWN SO THEY DON’T GET UP AGAIN, SO THEY NEVER WANT TO BULLY ANYONE EVER AGAIN.
YES, THERE *ARE* TIMES WHEN VIOLENCE IS JUSTIFIED AND I MAKE NO APOLOGIES FOR SAYING SO.
SCOTLAND HAD AN INDEPENDENCE REFERENDUM IN 2014. ROUGHLY HALF OF SCOTS, SAID THE POLLS, WANTED FREEDOM. (SADLY, THE LARGE NUMBER OF ENGLISH SETTLERS IN SCOTLAND DON’T). THE REALITY WAS, WE WON. AND IT WAS STOLEN FROM US. BLANK BACKED BALLOT PAPERS (MINE, FOR EXAMPLE) WHICH WERE MEANT TO HAVE BAR CODES AND UNIQUE NUMBERS ON THE BACKS. MISSING BALLOT PAPERS (A WOMAN WHO FOUND A BUNDLE IN TRASH CANS HANDED THEM INTO THE POLICE. *SHE* WAS ARRESTED AND HAS BEEN MADE TO SIGN A SILENCE ORDER BEFORE BEING RELEASED. FACT.) POLITICIANS OPENING POSTAL VOTES BEFORE THE VOTING HAD EVEN ENDED, ON LIVE TELEVISION. (AYE, DAVIDSON, LOOKING YOU, WOMAN,,,) AND A CONSTANT BARRAGE OF ASSAULT ON THE OLD, BY THE ENGLISH MOUTHPIECE IN SCOTLAND, THE BBC, TELLING PENSIONERS THAT UNDER INDEPENDENCE THEY’D LOSE THEIR PENSION (LIES), THAT UNDER INDEPENDENCE FOLKS WOULD NEED PASSPORTS TO GO BETWEEN ENGLAND AND SCOTLAND (LIES) AND MORE, WHEN THE TRUTH IS THAT SCOTLAND’S RESOURCES SHORE UP ENGLAND’S ECONOMY.
NOW *THAT* IS GREED ON A GRAND SCALE. AND THAT IS WHY ENGLAND REFUSES TO LET GO OF IT’S OWN CASH COW...
WHATEVER THE FUTURE HOLDS, I HOPE THE UPCOMING GENERATION CAN COPE WITH IT. BUT MORE, I HOPE THEY CAN CHANGE IT. I HOPE THEY HAVE THE COURAGE TO DO WHAT IT TAKES. LOOK AT THE PAST, SEE WHAT OTHERS DID, DON’T REPEAT.
BECAUSE GREED IS WHAT’S KILLING US ALL, IN TRUTH.

Robin Hood, Bohemia Interactive, ESRB & Mathematically perfect steak
Welcome back. We've been expecting you.
We have a bit of a longer episode than usual this week because we just had so many interesting people to talk about, including a liar who looks like Hugh Jackman, and one of the most prolific Astronomers to ever live.
But, first up, the Nerds discuss the rumoured Disney Robin Hood remake. In live action. With photorealistic CGI. This sounds terrifying. This is a terrible idea. This will haunt your nightmares forever.
One of Professor's favourite game studios has had a great year, and Professor wants to talk about their future. Bohemia Interactive has some great projects in the works that are well worth checking out, so we've got a summary for you.
Dev-i-Boy has brought us the ESRB's disappointing attempt to resolve the Lootbox debate. He and Professor agree that this is a poor response. Maybe one day there will be a solution, but not today.
Dev-i has also found the algorithm for creating the perfect steak. It involves dozens of factors and complicated equations. But don't pull this paper out next time you go to a barbecue, or everyone will go home before you start cooking.
As usual, we bring you the games of the week. Professor and his girlfriend are finding out why they shouldn't have kids in Think of the Children. DJ and Professor are still playing Generation Zero. Professor is better at surviving the robot apocalypse than he is at raising kids. Dev-i is playing VR chat again. We wish him luck in his quest to become an anime girl.

John Conway, English mathematician active in the theory of finite groups, knot theory, number theory, combinatorial game theory and coding theory. He also made contributions to many branches of recreational mathematics, most notably the invention of the cellular automaton called the Game of Life. A Google search for "Conway's Game of Life" prompts the search engine to automatically start playing the game. It is now commonly used as an introductory exercise in computing classes. Conway used his love of games to connect with children, spending time at math camps across the country. He passed away from complications from COVID-19 at the age of 82 in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
12 April 2020 – Sir Stirling Moss, F1 driver known as one of the best behind the wheel, passes away - https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/obituaries/stirling-moss-f1-driver-known-as-one-of-the-best-behind-the-wheel-dies-at-90/2020/04/12/91f03b9c-7cd3-11ea-9040-68981f488eed_story.html
Sir Stirling Craufurd Moss, a British Formula One racing driver. An inductee into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, he won 212 of the 529 races he entered across several categories of competition and has been described as "the greatest driver never to win the World Championship". Mr. Moss was known in his sport as “Mr. Motor Racing.” Long after his retirement, he was also considered a British national treasure — a dashing gentleman racer who was chivalrous and always sportsmanlike to his competitors despite the cut and thrust of motor racing. He was knighted by Prince Charles, standing in for the queen, in 2000. Mr. Moss’s sportsmanship was perhaps most evident in 1958, when he could have won the world championship after taking the Portuguese Grand Prix in Porto in his British-made Vanwall racecar. His archrival, Mike Hawthorn, finished second, giving him a key six points, which would have clinched the world title. But Hawthorn, a fellow Englishman, was threatened with disqualification for pushing his stalled Ferrari back onto the track after a spin. His disqualification would have put Mr. Moss in the driver’s seat for the world title. But Mr. Moss told race officials that Hawthorn had pushed his Ferrari only on an off-the-track area and should not be disqualified. His intervention swayed the officials, who awarded Hawthorn second place, eventually enabling him to win the F1 world championship by a single point over Mr. Moss. He passed away from a long illness at the age of 90 in Mayfair, London.

He began voice acting in video games in the late 1990s, including roles as Peppy Hare and Andross in Star Fox 64, Peppy Hare might not be one of gaming's most famous characters, but May’s line in 1997's Star Fox 64 where he played Fox McCloud’s mentor is one of the most iconic lines in gaming history - so much so that even Google got in on the beloved meme. Go ahead, Google "Do a barrel roll". His other various campaign characters, include Genghis Khan, in Age of Empires II'; and Soldier in Team Fortress 2. He passed away from complications from COVID-19 at the age of 79 in Seattle,Washington.

Remembrances
5 April 2020 – Honor Blackman - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honor_Blackman
English actress, widely known for the roles of Cathy Gale in The Avengers, Bond girlPussy Galore in Goldfinger, Julia Daggett in Shalako and Hera in Jason and the Argonauts. She is also known for her role as Laura West in the ITV sitcom The Upper Hand. At 38, she was one of the oldest actresses to play a Bond girl, and was five years older than the star Sean Connery. Albert R. Broccoli said Blackman was cast opposite Sean Connery in the James Bond films based on her success in the British television series The Avengers. He knew that most American audiences would not have seen the programme. Broccoli said, "The Brits would love her because they knew her as Mrs. Gale, the Yanks would like her because she was so good, it was a perfect combination." She died from natural causes at the age of 94 in Lewes, Sussex.
13 April 1938 – Grey Owl - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grey_Owl
Archibald Stansfeld Belaney, commonly known as Grey Owl, was a British-born conservationist, fur trapper, and writer who pretended to be a First Nations person. While he achieved fame as a conservationist during his life, after his death the revelation that he was not Indigenous, along with other autobiographical fabrications, negatively affected his reputation. Belaney rose to prominence as a notable author and lecturer, primarily on environmental issues. In working with the National Parks Branch, Grey Owl became the subject of many films, and was established as the "'caretaker of park animals' at Riding Mountain National Park in Manitoba" in 1931. Together with his numerous articles, books, films and lectures, his views on conservation reached audiences beyond the borders of Canada. His conservation views largely focused on humans' negative impact on nature through their commodification of nature's resources for profits, and a need for humans to develop a respect for the natural world. Recognition of Belaney has included biographies, a historic plaque at his birthplace, and a 1999 biopic about his life by the director Richard Attenborough. He died from pneumonia at the age of 49 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.
13 April 1941 – Annie Jump Cannon - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annie_Jump_Cannon
American astronomer whose cataloging work was instrumental in the development of contemporary stellar classification. With Edward C. Pickering, she is credited with the creation of the Harvard Classification Scheme, which was the first serious attempt to organize and classify stars based on their temperatures and spectral types. She was nearly deaf throughout her career. She was a suffragist and a member of the National Women's Party. Cannon manually classified more stars in a lifetime than anyone else, with a total of around 350,000 stars. She discovered 300 variable stars, five novas, and one spectroscopic binary, creating a bibliography that included about 200,000 references. She discovered her first star in 1898, though she was not able to confirm it until 1905. When she first started cataloging the stars, she was able to classify 1,000 stars in three years, but by 1913, she was able to work on 200 stars an hour. Cannon could classify three stars a minute just by looking at their spectral patterns and, if using a magnifying glass, could classify stars down to the ninth magnitude, around 16 times fainter than the human eye can see. Her work was also highly accurate. In 1925 she became the first woman to receive an honorary doctorate of science from Oxford University. In 1935, she created the Annie J. Cannon Prize for "the woman of any country, whose contributions to the science of astronomy are the most distinguished." She died from congestive heart failure at the age of 77 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
13 April 1944 - Cécile Chaminade - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C%C3%A9cile_Chaminade
French composer and pianist. In 1913, she was awarded the Légion d'Honneur, a first for a female composer. Ambroise Thomas said, "This is not a woman who composes, but a composer who is a woman." In 1908 she visited the United States, where she was accorded a hearty welcome. Her compositions were tremendous favorites with the American public, and such pieces as the Scarf Dance or the Ballet No. 1 were to be found in the music libraries of many lovers of piano music of the time. She composed a Konzertstück for piano and orchestra, the ballet music to Callirhoé and other orchestral works. Her songs, such as The Silver Ring and Ritournelle, were also great favorites. In London in November 1901, she made gramophone recordings of seven of her compositions for the Gramophone and Typewriter Company; these are among the most sought-after piano recordings by collectors, though they have been reissued on compact disk. Chaminade was relegated to obscurity for the second half of the 20th century, her piano pieces and songs mostly forgotten, with the Flute Concertino in D major, Op. 107, composed for the 1902 Paris Conservatoire Concours, her most popular piece today. Chaminade's music has been described as tuneful, highly accessible and mildly chromatic, and it may be regarded as bearing the typical characteristics of late-Romantic French music. She died at the age of 86 in Monte Carlo.
Famous Birthdays
13 April 1570 – Guy Fawkes - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guy_Fawkes
Also known as Guido Fawkes while fighting for the Spanish, was a member of a group of provincial English Catholics who planned the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605. Fawkes converted to Catholicism and left for mainland Europe, where he fought for Catholic Spain in the Eighty Years' War against Protestant Dutch reformers in the Low Countries. He travelled to Spain to seek support for a Catholic rebellion in England without success. He later met Thomas Wintour, with whom he returned to England. Wintour introduced him to Robert Catesby, who planned to assassinate King James I and restore a Catholic monarch to the throne. The plotters leased an undercroft beneath the House of Lords; Fawkes was placed in charge of the gunpowder which they stockpiled there. The authorities were prompted by an anonymous letter to search Westminster Palace during the early hours of 5 November, and they found Fawkes guarding the explosives. He was questioned and tortured over the next few days and confessed to wanting to blow up the House of Lords. He became synonymous with the Gunpowder Plot, the failure of which has been commemorated in the UK as Guy Fawkes Night since 5 November 1605, when his effigy is traditionally burned on a bonfire, commonly accompanied by fireworks. He was born in Stonegate, York.
13 April 1892 - Robert Watson-Watt - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Watson-Watt
Sir Robert Alexander Watson-Watt, Scottish pioneer of radio direction finding and radar technology. Watt began his career in radio physics with a job at the Met Office, where he began looking for accurate ways to track thunderstorms using the radio signals given off by lightning. This led to the 1920s development of a system later known as huff-duff. Huff-duff allowed operators to determine the location of an enemy radio in seconds and it became a major part of the network of systems that helped defeat the U-boat threat. It is estimated that huff-duff was used in about a quarter of all attacks on U-boats. In 1935 Watt was asked to comment on reports of a German death ray based on radio. Watt and his assistant Arnold Frederic Wilkins quickly determined it was not possible, but Wilkins suggested using radio signals to locate aircraft at long distances. This led to a February 1935 demonstration where signals from a BBC short-wave transmitter were bounced off a Handley Page Heyford aircraft. Watt led the development of a practical version of this device, which entered service in 1938 under the code name Chain Home. Watson-Watt justified his choice of a non-optimal frequency for his radar, with his often-quoted “cult of the imperfect,” which he stated as “Give them the third-best to go on with; the second-best comes too late, [and] the best never comes.” He was born in Brechin,Angus.
13 April 1899 - Alfred Mosher Butts - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_Mosher_Butts
American architect, famous for inventing the board gameScrabble in 1938. In the early 1930s after working as an architect but now unemployed, Butts set out to design a board game. He studied existing games and found that games fell into three categories: number games such as dice and bingo; move games such as chess and checkers; and word games such as anagrams. Butts decided to create a game that utilized both chance and skill by combining elements of anagrams and crossword puzzles, a popular pastime of the 1920s. Players would draw seven lettered tiles from a pool and then attempt to form words from their seven letters. A key to the game was Butts' analysis of the English language. Butts studied the front page of The New York Times to calculate how frequently each letter of the alphabet was used. He then used each letter's frequency to determine how many of each letter he would include in the game. He included only four "S" tiles so that the ability to make words plural would not make the game too easy. Butts initially called the game "Lexiko", but later changed the name to "Criss Cross Words", after considering "It", and began to look for a buyer. The game makers he originally contacted rejected the idea, but Butts was tenacious. Eventually, he sold the rights to entrepreneur and game-lover James Brunot, who made a few minor adjustments to the design and renamed the game "Scrabble." To memorialize Butts's importance to the invention of the game, there is a street sign at 35th Avenue and 81st Street in Jackson Heights that is stylized using letters, with their values in Scrabble as a subscript. He was born in Poughkeepsie, New York.

13 April 1953 – Project MKUltra begins - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_MKUltra
Project MKUltra (or MK-Ultra), also called the CIA mind control program, is the code name given to a program of experiments on human subjects that were designed and undertaken by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, some of which were illegal. Experiments on humans were intended to identify and develop drugs and procedures to be used in interrogations in order to weaken the individual and force confessions through mind control. The project's intentionally obscure CIA cryptonym is made up of the digraph MK, meaning that the project was sponsored by the agency's Technical Services Staff, followed by the word Ultra which had previously been used to designate the most secret classification of World War II intelligence. Other related cryptonyms include Project MKNAOMI and Project MKDELTA. The project was organized through the Office of Scientific Intelligence of the CIA and coordinated with the United States Army Biological Warfare Laboratories. Code names for drug-related experiments were Project Bluebird and Project Artichoke. The program engaged in many illegal activities, including the use of U.S. and Canadian citizens as its unwitting test subjects, which led to controversy regarding its legitimacy. MKUltra used numerous methods to manipulate its subjects' mental states and brain functions. Techniques included the covert administration of high doses ofpsychoactive drugs (especially LSD) and other chemicals, electroshocks, hypnosis, sensory deprivation, isolation, verbal and sexual abuse, as well as other forms of torture. In December 2018, declassified documents included a letter to an unidentified doctor discussing work on six dogs made to run, turn and stop via remote control and brain implants.
13 April 1970 - Apollo 13 oxygen tank explodes - https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/apollo-13-oxygen-tank-explodes
On April 13, 1970, disaster strikes 200,000 miles from Earth when oxygen tank No. 2 blows up on Apollo 13, the third manned lunar landing mission. Astronauts James A. Lovell, John L. Swigert, and Fred W. Haise had left Earth two days before for the Fra Mauro highlands of the moon but were forced to turn their attention to simply making it home alive. Mission commander Lovell reported to mission control on Earth: “Houston, we’ve had a problem here,” and it was discovered that the normal supply of oxygen, electricity, light, and water had been disrupted. The landing mission was aborted, and the astronauts and controllers on Earth scrambled to come up with emergency procedures. The crippled spacecraft continued to the moon, circled it, and began a long, cold journey back to Earth. The astronauts and mission control were faced with enormous logistical problems in stabilizing the spacecraft and its air supply and providing enough energy to the damaged fuel cells to allow successful reentry into Earth’s atmosphere. Navigation was another problem, and Apollo 13‘s course was repeatedly corrected with dramatic and untested maneuvers. On April 17, with the world anxiously watching, tragedy turned to triumph as the Apollo 13 astronauts touched down safely in the Pacific Ocean.
13 April 2017 - The US drops the largest ever non-nuclear weapon on Nangarhar Province,Afghanistan.
- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_Nangarhar_airstrike
The GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast (commonly known as "Mother of All Bombs") is a large-yield bomb, developed for the United States military by Albert L. Weimorts, Jr. of the Air Force Research Laboratory. At the time of development, it was said to be the most powerful non-nuclear weapon in the American arsenal. The basic principle resembles that of the BLU-82 Daisy Cutter, which was used to clear heavily wooded areas in the Vietnam War. Pentagon officials suggested MOAB might be used as an anti-personnel weapon, as part of the "shock and awe" strategy integral to the 2003 invasion of Iraq. The MOAB is not a penetrator weapon and is primarily intended for soft to medium surface targets covering extended areas and targets in a contained environment such as a deep canyon or within a cave system. The MOAB was first dropped in combat in the 13 April 2017 airstrike against an Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant – Khorasan Province (ISIS) tunnel complex in Achin District, Afghanistan. Casualty figures were initially reported as 36 but increased over the following days as reconnaissance units investigated the site. On 18 April 2017, one senior Afghan security official said the bomb killed 96 Islamic State militants, among them 13 major commanders. Stars and Stripes reported that General Dawlat Waziri, spokesman for Afghanistan's Defense Ministry said that since the strike, the offensive operation in the area was resumed. An Afghan officer also said that trees 100 metres from the impact point had remained standing.

My technological imperative
It’s 2006, I’m sitting in a computer lab watching a caterpillar jump from one letter to another, the teacher comes over and places a piece of white poster board over my hands. I’ve been cheating, I was looking at my fingers while also trying to match the letters to the caterpillar. It’s computer class and our grade are based off whether or not we can keep our fingers on the “home keys.” I’m home now, it’s time to feed my Neopet, my dad’s on the phone though, I hope my Neopet hasn’t died yet. I finally got online, my AIM pops up, my friends are online—we discuss how terrible computer class is; my Neopet is fed, time to fix my Myspace page. Its 2006 and my generation is great at coding HTMLs because Myspace is what’s important to us all. Its 2009, Facebook is all the rage, thank god I don’t have to spend hours coding and we no longer have dial up, I have a flip phone and have just gotten unlimited texting, we no longer type words out, now it’s only “brb, g2g, ttyl.” It’s all about PowerPoint, until about 2011 when I discovered Prezi, now we can make things zoom out and zoom in and whoosh through without having to click a bunch of buttons in PowerPoint. Its 2012 and I get my first laptop, it’s a refurbished Dell laptop, it runs out of storage so now I need a portable hard drive to keep room. Its 2013 and my laptop dies, I get a brand new one that has the capability of a split screen. It’s 2017 and I finally get a MacBook Pro, I have no idea what to do on this thing, I didn’t even know what to do on my Dell, I’ve spent a year just clicking around on my Mac trying to figure out what the buttons feel do. My email addresses have gone from aim emails, to a comcast, to a google and now an Akron one; from [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] now kennedyano7and kao34. I still am trying to learn what the excess buttons are at the bottom of the emails—I barely know how to send an attachment let alone full-blown pictures in the email.
Its 2006, we’re goofing off in computer class trying to draw pictures via the computer, the mouse doesn’t move in a circle. Its 2009, and now you just click a square to color its in. Its 2012 there are apps for everything, now you can just download a coloring app. Its 2019 and now coloring books are back, except there created for cuss words and jokes now. I don’t understand how apps work at all— like the “notes” section on your phone, I still don’t understand how that works. What buttons are you supposed to click when you want to create a new note/send a new note/save a new note. Now I’m just trying to figure out how to use MacBook Pro to just do my regular everyday work.
I tried to use Arbonne to make some extra something on the side with a new kid, but that needs so much technology I have no clue what I got into—none of it makes sense. Now I need to create something to house all my projects for this class? How am I supposed to do that? Aren’t millennials supposed to be able to do anything and everything technology related, am I even a millennial? I stopped trying to use Instagram to advocate for Arbonne, how does Instagram even work?
Its 2019, it’s all about Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter and I have no idea how anything actually works. What is technology, there’s so many issues with WIFI I’d rather go back to dial up, at least then I knew the reason it wasn’t working was because someone picked up the phone and tried to make a phone call. All that mumbo-jumbo about WIFI not working because their working on lines or the cable needs to be restarted, it’s just too much. I’m about to be 25 years old and I still don’t understand how Microsoft Word even works.
Its 2006 and I just learned how to change the color on my away message for AIM, it’s all set up so that when someone messages me they get my message. Its 2009 and I’m just learning how to setup Facebook. Its 2013 and I just discovered how to add people from my new dorm room onto my Facebook. Its 2019 and apparently you can change the color of your twitter page from light to dark, change your MacBook from light to dark. I even learned how to get my WIFI setup nicely. Its 2019 and I’m still trying to get used to Brightspace, Springboard was a lot easier to use than Brightspace. Why does everything have to be so complicated.
Its 2006 and you’ve never heard of buying things online. Its 2009 and online Amazon shopping is popular. Its 2012 and I just purchased majority of my dorm room things online. I just signed up for Amazon Prime. Everything came within two days, this is amazing—you used to have to wait for weeks for your items and at that point you completely forgot what you bought. Its 2019 and now I can have everything the next day, or even pick the day I want to have things sent to me. Online shopping makes more sense to me than setting up a website—I can even program Amazon to one-click where I don’t have to use any information and can just click a button.
Its 2006 and my mini iPod shuffle has music from LimeWire on it. I don’t know what song is going to appear because it doesn’t have a screen but it’s still pretty cool. Its 2009 and I have a flip phone, my iPod shuffle and my Walkman! Its 2012 and I have a sliding keyboard phone with an iPod that has a screen! LimeWire isn’t a “thing”anymore—good because half the music I downloaded wasn’t even what I really wanted. I continue to ask for iPod gift cards for every occasion possible, iTunes is expensive. Its 2019 and I have Apple Music, for $10.99 a month I get unlimited anything and everything. I don’t even need to download things anymore, that saves me so much time/effort.
Its 2006 and technology is basically nonexistent. Its 2009 and Apple is becoming a thing. Its 2012/2013 and now I just have to worry about the University of Akron’s WIFI actually working [it never really worked in the dorms]. Its 2019 and now I can just go up to people at a desk and ask them to help me with my WIFI because it doesn’t work, it’s as simple as just deleting the old WIFI setting and setting it up all over again. We have autosave and an iCloud.
Its 2006 and I just need a floppy disk to save my work. Its 2009 and we’ve gone from a floppy disk to USB drive, now you just have to make sure your computer is compatible to your USB drive. Its 2013 and I have an external hard drive plugged into my refurbished Dell laptop. Its 2019 and now everything is saved to a “cloud.” Which reminds me of the movie where the people accidentally send the contents of their “cloud” to their whole contact list—is that the danger we face nowadays?
Its 2006 and you cannot text until after 9pm. Its 2009 and my parents are having me use a pay-as-you-go flip phone in order for me to pay for my own minutes, I just want to be able to text people. Its 2010 and my Samsung flip keyboard doesn’t work. Its 2013 and I have my first iPhone, I’m never going back to Samsung. Its 2015 and I crack my screen, I call my mom crying. Its 2019 and I have to set up AutoPay for my new phone bill service. It asks for the twelfth day of the month, but it’ll be taken out on the fifteenth, I don’t understand how that works. I’m so confused, nothing makes sense. My boyfriend’s father does everything electronically, I still send a check in the mail when it’s time to pay my car.
Its 2006 and I spend majority of my money on buying DVDs and a portable DVD player for myself. Its 2009 and I illegally downloaded movies off the internet. Its 2013 and my TV has a DVD player in it. Its 2019 and now there’s Netflix, which I’m still learning how to use. I miss Blockbuster. I miss VHS’s, I still don’t know what feeling is worse—a broken VHS tape or scratched up DVD Player, either way I cry when one of them happens.
Its 2019 and I don’t understand how anything works anymore. Between PowerPoint, iMovie, Microsoft Word, and even Amazon either way when did everything get so difficult? I will be 25 this year, my son is almost four months old, technology makes no sense to me. I can barely figure out the control remote for our TV. Its 2019 and Disney is coming out with a new service with access to movies. Am I still old school for wanting to buy DVDs? Sometimes, when dealing with today’s technology, I ask myself am I 24 or am I 48?

You may of noticed the logo changed a bit recently! With the re-branding to Animated AF I wanted to create something new again. With that in mind who wants to see how the logo of my main website has changed over the last 18 years? Well keep on reading and I will take you on a long winded journey!
Oh boy! We start of way back in 2001 when I got my first PC and only really had MSpaint to work with! This logo is just a wonky re-draw of the old Manga Entertainment logo, as my website at the time mainly focused on talking about anime videos I picked up. The website started out in 2000 with mostly text and URL copy-pasted animated GIFs, hosted on Angelfire and edited on a Sega Dreamcast browser!
The debut of the un-named face thing! I first drew this creature with green tufts of hair as graffiti in a Sonic fan game the year prior and it’s inspired by the Japanese facial gesture called Akanbe which can be used as sarcasm or as a taunt. If you can’t tell in this MSpaint version it is pulling it’s eyelid down. I didn’t have a scanner at the time either so this was all mouse drawn.
Over the next couple years I got copies of Adobe software and a scanner so this was roughly around the time the webcomic started and my website was far more elaborate as I was learning all sorts of HTML coding. This version of the face was my first ever attempt at Illustrator vector art.
The website went under a minimalist low-kb redesign the same year mostly consisting of pixel art and fonts. This animated pixel version of the face was made back in 2003 among a host of other expressions for the message board but ended up becoming the main logo right up until Manga-Gaga was closed in 2006.
This Flash animated version of the face debuted in the ‘Manga-Gaga Issue 200′ animation that was treated as the final installment of the webcomic. The website had one final redesign in 2005 and I stopped updating it in 2006, but left it live for several years before closing it. It was also used for showreels and my Blog for many more years.
As Manga-Gaga was wrapping up, I was working on a new portfolio website as my final college course project called Tea N Crumpets, which was entirely made in Flash featuring a host of new characters I made up. No sign of the Akanbe face here as it was mainly associated with MGGG, though I still used it on social spaces and my blog.

Version 2 of the Tea N Crumpets website was in development on and off for several years from 2009 in which I planned to completely re-design the Flash based layouts. In the end only one of the new pages was publicilly launched as well as this new version of the logo using some photography elements.
With Tea N Crumpets gathering dust for years I finally decided to re-brand to what I was known best for: my username The Gagaman. The new version of the logo was completely re-designed and re-animated for my showreel and a new text logo was also created. Looking back at it now the graffiti style text is a bit hard to read, but I'm still proud of the new akabe face and color scheme/background so I still use it to this day.
Two years later I dumped the weird old text and used something that was easier to read. This was from the end of my showreel back in 2012. From 2012 to here my main focus was on Lucky Hit.
For ages I had wanted to rename my main website from the Gagaman to something else, and while this logo brought about the name ‘AAF!’ all the URLs were still ‘thegagaman’. This logo is based on my signature on all artwork I do of my full initials. I still really like the simplicity of this one though I was worried that it would be confused with the Alliance of American Football ‘AAF’. I will still use it on artwork though.
Where I’m at now. I finally bit the bullet and renamed all my accounts to AnimatedAF and got a new e-mail address to match. I wanted to design a font that is bold, easily read but also still has my style ingrained in it. I might continue to tinker with it in future but for now I’m happy with it and I’m going to create a font for it for various new pages I want to add to the website.
If anyone has any other feedback on how I could make this website look more appealing let me know!

Copying over a bunch of comments I made on reddit, about Elm.
("Anyone using Elm in production?")
My team is. I have mixed feelings, along the lines of "I'm not a fan, but I wouldn't be surprised if I liked all the other options less". Being able to integrate with Haskell is very nice.
I haven't been looking forward to this release, which removes native modules (i.e. makes it much harder to interop with JavaScript; ports still exist, but they don't compare). It also removes user-defined operators, which I think is a shame.
("What parts of Elm do you like most and less?")
They're not really "parts of Elm", but...
I really like autogenerating the API. If I change my backend types, my frontend won't compile until I change that too. We've had some bugs with this (mostly in Haskell libraries), but for the most part it works fantastically. I just wish Haskell's records were as nice as Elm's.
Oh, and the timetravel debugger is super great. You can step back through the history of your page state and see exactly where things went wrong.
My list of dislikes is longer, but I should clarify that my prior frontend experience was stuck in 2012. And, well, I'm still not entirely convinced that we shouldn't all just go back to JQuery; but I can't compare Elm to any of its actual competitors. Just to my expectations, which may not be realistic.
Most concretely, there's a lot of boilerplate. If I add a new page, or a new widget, I need to edit several different places to tell them about it. There's no way to use Elm widgets like regular HTML ones, so if I have a lot of them there's just line after line of "if a message for widget1 comes through, run the widget1 update function on the widget1 model, and update my own model with the new widget1 model and whatever else it returned. If a message for widget2 comes through, run the widget2 update function..." There's no way to generate a dropdown list from a union type that doesn't involve just listing all elements of the union (and no way for the compiler to verify that you've got them all).
Less concretely, there's something of an all-or-nothing vibe. If you're writing in Elm, then either you use Elm components or you put in a bunch of effort to make it work with Javascript components. And the ecosystem isn't mature enough to reliably have great Elm components[1]. (I don't really blame Elm for this, it was probably unavoidable when writing a new language, but it's a pain.) For a while, we were using style-elements, which does the same thing again, you use components specifically written for style-elements. (You can embed elm components, but it doesn't work very well. I do somewhat blame style-elements for this.)
For the most part, I like elm. But it has enough annoyances that I wish I was using something kind-of-similar, without really knowing if that thing could exist even in theory.
And least concretely, there's also a paternalistic vibe, which I get especially strongly from this new release. Native modules are dangerous, so they're forbidden[2]. (We've been using one for handling XSRF cookies, and we have no clue how we're going to handle that now. Most of our others will just be annoying to lose, we'll rewrite with ports or pure Elm. But "annoying for no good reason" is even more annoying.) Some people wrote silly custom operators, so they got taken away. Deeply-nested records are a bad idea, so nested record updates are left super ugly. I'd like to be treated like an adult.
[1]: And I feel like in Javascript, the equivalent components would be easier to beat with a stick until they work. Elm doesn't really let you do that, once an HTML node has been generated you can't edit it, not even to add event handlers. It either goes on the page or it doesn't. That's good for making things work reliably, but sometimes you just need an ugly hack. This is related to the paternalism thing. (Not that I claim it was a deliberate choice. But I don't imagine that if someone offered a PR to add that ability to Elm, that it would be accepted.)
[2]: Honestly, I think removing native modules is the main reason I wouldn't recommend Elm to someone right now. Elm is young, it doesn't do everything yet; and that's fine, it can't be expected to. But in 0.18 it had an escape hatch, and now it doesn't, and I don't trust it not to need one.
(I just now realised that those footnotes were visible on old reddit and my mobile app, but not new reddit. Wtf, reddit.)
Some things I wish I'd mentioned here: the lack of cookie support, more explicitly than I did. And we haven't done much error handling yet, but it looks like that's going to be boilerplate up the wazoo; I wouldn't be shocked if we need to decorate every single Http requst.
(rtfeldman: "We resolved [XSRF cookies] with a few lines of back-end code - hit me up on Elm Slack and I can talk you through it!")
Thanks, I'll get in touch tomorrow.
Um, but at the risk of sounding churlish - I'll say another thing I don't really like about Elm. I get the distinct impression that a lot of discussion happens on slack instead of in public forums (like reddit or stack overflow), making it somewhat inaccessible. And then a lot of the supplementary material seems to come in the form of videos, which are also somewhat inaccessible.
I assume this works for many people, maybe even better than the forums-and-blog-posts thing that I like. But for me personally, it's just a (minor) barrier.
Still, I do appreciate your offer. If we get something that works, I hope you don't mind if I share it outside of the slack?
Update: so rtfeldman's suggestion is, in a nutshell: follow the OWASP recommendations, and instead of using a double-submit cookie (our current approach), switch to custom request headers. Elm sends content-type automatically with Http.jsonBody, and setting another custom header is also really easy.
It's a good suggestion, and we're checking whether it works with our backend auth libraries. If it does work, it'll have other advantages. I'm grateful to rtfeldman for his time and expertise.
Still, I think it reflects poorly on Elm that we're considering changing our auth mechanism because Elm can't handle cookies (at least not in a way that's at all easy to work with, without a hack that's been taken away).
I just can't get over that cookie thing. I think the reason they're not supported is that Evan decided local storage is better. I do not want Evan to make these kinds of decisions for me.
Like, if I was contemplating picking up Elm, and someone told me it couldn't handle cookies, I wouldn't even bother investigating further. Even if I didn't expect to need cookies, what else is missing?
And as it turns out, cookies are the only thing we've found that we absolutely needed Native modules for. But I still think that's a sane reaction.
("Elm's records seem to just be Haskell records with lenses built in.")
Among other problems, Haskell makes it hard to have multiple record types with the same name, hard to have one record type which is a superset of another, and hard to write functions which accept "any record type with this field". Even accessing them is a pain, you need to import everything.
It's improving, but slowly. Meanwhile, elm records have none of those problems. They're not perfect (I'd love to have shorthand syntax for a general update function), but they're miles ahead of Haskell.
(It's possible that "Haskell with a lens library" compares more favorably, but I haven't tried. My team is making tentative explorations into generic-lens, but that's it.)
In my foray on the Slack, I got nosey and seached to see if there was discussion of my comment. There was only a little. Evan recommended against people engaging with me, which I find a little annoying but I think partly because I get the vibe from that of "dismissing a troll", which is probably unfair of me. There's also a place he could be coming from of "this guy is making valid points, but yeah, Elm isn't doing what he wants and arguing about it won't help".
One thing he did say was like, «I guess that guy didn't find my points about optimising the generated code compelling. [ascii shrug]». I didn't reply on reddit because it wasn't intended for me to see, but my response might be something like:
Well yeah, when you were talking about the generated code you said it was important that there was no Javascript in the ecosystem. I don't want Javascript in the ecosystem, I want Javascript in my own codebase, like it worked in 0.18. Maybe I misinterpreted what you mean by "ecosystem", but to me that means "the packages that get shared and distributed".
Are the new optimisations incompatible with native modules? The thought never occured to me, and your comment doesn't give me a clear answer. I suppose it's possible. (But then how do the whitelisted packages handle it?.)
(Why did the thought never occur to me? Because removing native modules was never, that I saw, justified with "enables optimisations". If that was given as the reason, I would honestly find it significantly less annoying. Because then it feels like you're making difficult tradeoffs, not like you're treating me like a child.)
Still, even in that case I feel like you have a bunch of options other than removing native modules. You can say "native modules or optimization, pick one". You can say "native modules work, but optimization might fuck with them, be careful." (And probably we can find some hacks that make it work fairly reliably.) You can say "native modules work, and here are some ways to get the optimizer not to fuck with them." One of those feels like approximately no dev work, another feels like literally none.
Or maybe those solutions are all DOA, I dunno. I don't even know if there's a problem for them to solve.

Web App Development With Headless CMS And Respond
Throughout this guide, you'll learn what Headless CMS is, and the pros and cons of Headless CMS. Finally, you ll used
GraphCMS
(a (a backend-only content management system) to create a shopping cart. Using a headless CMS and Respond, you can then go ahead and create any web app of your choosing.
As digital goods keep changing, so does the content that we are consuming. A scalable, cross-platform content management system is important for ensuring the growth velocity of a company. Traditional CMS offers the convenience of providing in a single environment the text, the editing interface, templates and custom codes. Yet with the developments in the mobile age, this isn't enough anymore. We need a new breed of CMS-one that can make content available through any channel that requires a Headless CMS. A headless CMS lets you handle the content and distribute it to any site.
What in practice does this look like?
What happens while you are deleting a CMS frontend? The main difference is that you can not create a website by yourself with a headless CMS. Everything happens in the same place, with a traditional CMS.
A headless CMS does not have the features that allow you to create your site — it has no themes or templates for the web. To use a headless CMS, you must first build a website or app, or other experience, and then use the CMS API to plug in your content. Why are you looking for Headless?
A headless CMS comes with a friendly approach to the API, which allows content to be published via an API (RESTful or GraphQL). This allows you to use the same API to distribute content through various platforms, such as applications for Android or IOS, smartwatch, AR / VR, etc. A headless CMS helps developers to easily unleash the imagination. With a traditional CMS, changes can be time-consuming, so you need to re-implement the entire CMS, for example, to tweak a part of your site. You can make improvements to the frontend with a headless CMS without having any effect on the back-end infrastructure, thereby saving yourself time and money, which makes it easier. CMS Modern Vs Headless: The Pros And Cons
Choosing between a headless and a conventional CMS can be difficult. The fact is, they both possess potential benefits and disadvantages.
TRADITIONAL CMS PROS make it simple to customise. Most have drag and drop, this makes it easy for a person to work seamlessly with them without programming experience. It is easier to set up your content on a conventional CMS, because you already have everything you need (domain management , design, etc.).
TRADITIONAL CMS CONS has more time and resources for maintenance and configuration for the combined front-end and back-end performance.
Traditional CMS e.g. Wordpress relies heavily on plugins and themes that might contain malicious codes or bugs and slow the website or blog speed. Here's a list of weak WordPress plugins, themes, from 18,305. Security controls for Drupal developers are discussed here. Check out more facts here.
HEADLESS CMS PROS has As the frontend and the backend are isolated from each other, it allows you to select which front-end technology matches your requirements. It also provides versatility for the developer during the production process.
Platforms built with headless CMS (blogs , websites, etc.) can be deployed to work on various displays such as web , mobile, AR / VR, etc.
HEADLESS AGAINS CMS
They give you the troubles of running back-end infrastructures, setting up your site's presentation component, app.
They can be more costly to implement — the cost of developing a user-friendly analytics platform is high compared to using conventional CMS. BEST USE CASES FOR HEADLESS CMS
Tatic Site Generators (e.g. Gridsome, Gatsby) has several
Jamstack
sites generated with static site generators such as Gridsome, Hugo or Gatsby that use headless CMS to handle content, they are unable to access a database, so content can be stored in a headless CMS and retrieved as static files via an API.
Mobile Apps (iOS , Android) has the advantage of a headless CMS for mobile developers, as the API enables them to distribute apps from the same backend to an IOS / Android device that handles apps for their website, keeping it in sync.
The Mobile Software
This approach involves serving content via an API, which is then consumed by a web application but provides a centralized place for content management. An example of this is an e-commerce application designed using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript with content and product data stored in the CMS and supported via an external API.
TYPES OF HEADLESS CMS
There is a list of headless CMSs you might what to check out. Pleasant
A headless CMS powered by the API, designed to create, manage, and distribute content on any platform. They offer the opportunity to build your business model as opposed to a conventional CMS, so you can determine what sort of content you want to handle.
GraphCMS
A headless CMS for users looking to develop their digital products with a GraphQL web infrastructure. This CMS is completely developed as a ground-up based API, enabling developers to specify the parameters of the API frameworks, permissions, and relations. We 'd be using GraphCMS in this article because of its approach to the GraphQL API.
HoweverterCMS
A CMS that gives complete freedom to build a full SEO website or branded blog, and supports any tech stack. This tool saves you the time and resources to build the web. Butter CMS is a headless, maintenance-free CMS tool that can be incorporated with any language or system. The powerful interface assists you in defining and customizing every aspect of your website without any trouble.
Forward An open-source platform that envelops custom SQL databases with a dynamic API and provides an intuitive content management admin app. Free self-hosting, or using the on-demand Cloud service to handle all of your digital omnichannel experiences. Flexibility
A JAMStack focused Headless CMS with built-in Page Management. Create, handle, and deploy quicker. Agility CMS is a Content-First Headless CMS that allows you to pick any programming language while at the same time gaining versatility, speed and power from lightweight APIs. From there, incorporate Page Management, Ecommerce, Online Ticketing and Search features. Agility CMS is a full Digital Experience Framework that saves time, eliminates limitations and facilitates seamless experiences across all digital platforms. Thanks to GraphCMS
Content is both complex and multi-channel, but existing content management systems ( CMS) lack the versatility to meet modern-day digital content delivery requirements. GraphCMS is the first HeadlessCMS built around GraphQL and offers a solution to this problem with its goal to promote the painless flow of content between content creators, developers , and users.
GraphCMS embraces almost any form of data that you can imagine, including pictures, maps, etc. It makes even the responsibilities and permissions easier. Although there are other headless CMS solutions, GraphCMS aims to provide developers with trouble-free experience; by using an API specification called GraphQL. It removes the need for multiple SDKs to deal with content delivery, and provides easy accessibility of multi-channel content. It makes it very easy to build apps rich in content. GraphCMS Then GraphQL
GraphCMS relies heavily on GraphQL, its specification for the backbone API. GraphQL is the language of question and run time of the API. It was developed in 2012 by Facebook, and released in 2015 open-sourced. The likes of Pinterest, Github, Twitter, Intuit, Coursera have all adopted GraphQL to power their mobile apps , websites, and APIs ever since. GraphQL is similar to REST in its core purpose of providing a specification for the development and use of APIs. Unofficially dubbed "REST 2.0" however, GraphQL has streamlined various core features that REST provides.
GraphQL's key feature includes protocol-agnostic use, managed fetching of data, editable fields and forms, and in-depth handling of errors. The effects include eliminating application consistency, preventing data over and under fetching, and substantially reducing requests from the network.
As a concrete example, let’s take the relationship of a query to a newsfeed. A newsfeed put up has an author, a identify and comments. If we use a REST-based CMS, we would must make three specific server requests for these three one-of-a-kind endpoints, whereas, in a GraphQL primarily based CMS, we would most effective must make 1 request for all 3. Consequently, the results offer relatively faster queries and much less network flooding — in a practical use case, it would now not just be one entity making more than one requests, but hundreds and millions.
GraphQL reduces the complexity of constructing APIs by abstracting all requests to a unmarried endpoint. Unlike traditional REST APIs, it's miles declarative; some thing is asked is returned.
GraphCMS has a beneficiant loose tier of one million API operations requests in step with month and 500 GB property traffic. Also, GraphCMS presents a Graphiql admin interface that gives you complete access to your statistics and you may just download all of it after which execute a create many mutations in opposition to your new backend to migrate the whole thing over. Building Our Project
To see the energy of Headless CMS the usage of GraphCMS we would be building a simple shopping cart. GETTING STARTED
To get commenced with GraphCMS follow the steps. Create an account on GraphCMS. You can use the free tier.
At a hit signup, you’ll be taken to your dashboard. Click on create a new venture.
Ensure you click on on create a undertaking from scratch.
Set mission info for the mission click create.
In our dashboard, we would create our fashions and content.
Select the schema inside the sidebar of the dashboard to create a schema.
GraphCMS has an superb drag and drop UI, that make it clean to seamlessly create schema in minutes.
Let’s go in advance and create our gadget fields in our schema. name: “”
type: The area type is a String, Single line Text.
Is required
description: It’s the name of the product.
charge: “”
kind: The discipline kind is int.
Is required
description: It will comprise the fee of our product.
Description: “”
type: The area type is a String, Multi-line Text.
Is required
description: This area will contain the outline of our product.
photo: “”
type: The subject kind is the file, that is an Asset Picker.
Is required
description: This picture subject will comprise the photograph of our product. Currently, we haven't any content. Click on ‘Content’ within the sidebar that have to take you the Content section, and click on on ‘Create New’.
Let’s add some contents so we can show them later in our app using React.Add some greater content if you desire.
Next, replica the API endpoint URL (Click at the Dashboard) — that is the single endpoint for conversation between our React front stop and GraphCMS back stop.
Next, let’s make our API endpoint accessible. Navigate to Settings Under Public API Permission and click on at the drop-down and select OPEN and click the update button.
SETTING UP REACT
The easiest way to set up React is to use Create-React-App. (This is an formally supported way to create single-page React applications, and offers a modern build setup with out a configuration.) We’ll employ it to bootstrap the software we’ll be building. From your terminal, run the command below:
npx create-react-app smashing-stores && cd smashing-storesstart the React server by running-> npm start CREATING OUR LAYOUT
In developing the layout for our project, we are able to have 5 different additives. Navbar: To maintain our navigation and cart icon
Allproducts: To show a list of all products
Product: The markup for a unmarried product
Footer: The footer of our app
Cart: To preserve the items in our cart
For a short setup, we are able to be the use of Bootstrap to create our components. To consist of Bootstrap, we would use bootstrap CDN, open up your index.Html in the public folder, upload the hyperlink to the top section:
https://stackpath.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/4.4.1/css/bootstrap.min.css Now we can make use of bootstrap lessons in our application. Next, create a /components folder and create the following documents interior it:· Navbar.js· Allproducts.js· Product.js· Footer.js· Cart.js Creating Our Navbar
Creating Our Footer.js
Our footer needs some styling so we’d add the following styles to the App.css file:
footer { position: absolute; bottom: -55px; width: 100%; background-color: #333; color:#fff; }
Connecting To The GraphCMS Backend With GraphQL
To join our software to the backend, we want to put in a couple of GraphQL packages. One of the libraries we are able to use is apollo-improve which offers a consumer the street for connecting to the GraphQL backend using a URI (Uniform Resource Identifier). The URI is the endpoint supplied by using GraphCMS and is available on the endpoint phase of the dashboard. Run the subsequent command in your terminal to install the necessary packages: npm install apollo-boost graphql graphql-tag react-apollo
Displaying Our Products
Creating The Allproducts Component
Here, we wrapped our merchandise with the factor and exceeded the PRODUCTS_QUERY as props. Apollo injected numerous props into the thing’s render prop function. These props themselves provide information about the kingdom of the community request: loading: This takes place during ongoing requests.Error: This takes place while the requests fail.facts: This is statistics received from the server. Finally, we loop through all of the acquired gadgets and bypass them as a prop to our Product issue. Before we see what it looks like, let’s create our Product element. Creating Product Component
Open up Product.Js and add the subsequent code to it:
IMPORTING OUR COMPONENTS INTO APP.JS
Creating Our Cart Component
Conclusion
The definition learned in this article will help you build web applications nearly at any time without paying too much attention to your back-end infrastructure. Creating a full-fledged e-commerce shop and incorporating payment etc. will take it further. I'm going to love to see what you might do in the Comments section.

Our footer needs some styling so we’d add the following styles to the App.css file:
footer { position: absolute; bottom: -55px; width: 100%; background-color: #333; color:#fff; }

Angular Framework- A Winning Choice for App Development!

It was in the year 2009 when Misko Hevery, an employee at Brat Tech LLC, started working on AngularJS and finally in 2012, released its first version- AngularJS 1.0 and later released multiple versions of Angular one after the other, Angular 9 is the latest. The project is officially supported by Google. Today, Angular has developed into one of the most popular frameworks in the software world. Several leading companies like PayPal, Freelancer, Netflix, The Guardian, and iStock have used it for their projects. Consequently, there is a high demand for an AngularJS app development company that develops world-class applications for its clients.
Let us also have a look at some statistics related to Angular as given below. They are estimated by SimilarTech, a renowned platform for insights on sales related to technologies.
Industrial domains using Angular:
Computer Electronics and Telecommunications- 6.60%
Entertainment and Arts- 4.90%
Education and Science- 3.43%
Media and News- 3.04%
Others- 82.02%
Country-wise usage of Angular in the world:
United States- 75,809
Russia- 48,874
Taiwan- 18,397
United Kingdom- 10,668
India- 10, 467
Rest of the world- 160198
We can see how the Angular framework has, in a short time, became the winning choice for app development as compared to other frameworks. So, in this blog, we will outline the reasons why this framework is a good choice over other frameworks. Let’s get started. Why Angular Framework is Highly preferred over other Frameworks?
Outstanding Productivity and Simplicity of Use
Angular is quite simple to use due to the availability of high-end features. Angular has a component-based model that facilitates the reusability of components inside the app. These features significantly reduce the efforts of an AngularJS app developer for coding the applications.
Also, AngularJS has customized IDEs that help the developers to track any errors instantly. This framework has numerous templates for the faster development of the UI. Another feature- CLI i.e. Common Line Interface in this framework lets the developers attach the components and create applications faster.
Easy Integration with Other Libraries
It is one of the best benefits that this framework offers. It integrates easily with other libraries, especially when it comes to web development projects, thus making the development speedy.
When an Angular app developer uses various object-oriented MVC frameworks for server-side development, the integration of AngularJS for client-side development becomes simpler.
Strong Support from Google’s Community
It is supported and maintained by the Tech giant- Google. It is one of the most active communities of talented developers who are capable of resolving any issues during the app development process. So, the community provides excellent support to anyone and everyone having any technical issues. Also, this community hosts conferences and invites global IT companies that introduce modifications and advancements in the framework. Now let us have a glance at some technical goodies that Angular offers:

MVC Architecture: Angular comes with an MVC i.e. Model View Controller architecture. Using the MVC, the AngiularJS developers can create an application in three separate layers and then merge the codes together. Also, this architecture allows synchronizing the data automatically and reduces complexity while coding. Thus, it becomes a time and effort-saving process altogether.
Two-way Data Binding Potential: This is an amazing feature that allows the modifications in the user interface to immediately reflect in the applications. Any module changes, user actions, browser events, etc. in the framework gets updated effectively across the app. The developers don’t need to save the links to DOM elements as they can be used immediately. Also, low-level constructions don’t need to be used.
Declarative Coding Style: Declarative coding paradigm is used for the creation of commonly accessible platforms. This includes only the code essential for producing necessary outcomes which makes reading and understanding the code easier and also makes the code lightweight.
POJO Model: Angular makes use of all objects that are POJO i.e. Plain Old JavaScript Object. This model provides all the standard JavaScript functionalities for manipulating objects. It offers spontaneous and well-planned objects, so, the developers don’t need any extra getter and setter functions.
Directives: Angular uses HTML which is a pattern language and has the facility of directives. As a result, the AngularJS app developers can easily build new HTML custom directives and code more effectively. It also improves the code readability.
Single Page Application (SPA) Features: This framework is packed with a host of SPA features which gives more control to developers over form validation abilities. SPAs allow easy creation and control of online forms. This results in productive outcomes and gives developers the freedom to modify the behavior of HTML elements in the UI.
The Facility of Using Filters: AngularJS comes with the directory of filters consisting of filters like Currency, Number, Date, Uppercase, OrderBy, etc. Also, in case more filters are required, developers can quickly register a new filter factory. The filters are quite helpful while developing database search functionality or while presenting large data chunks to the users.
RESTful Functionality: AngularJS supports REST functionality in the ngResource module which again contributes to the building of a quality application while saving the developer’s time.
Other Technical Benefits: Along with the aforesaid benefits, AngularJS development also provides a few other advantages. It allows the creation of a captivating, user-friendly, and lightweight user-interface. Another advantage it offers is the creation of several new modules for a single application for easing out the development process. Also, it comes with an in-built unit testing module which reduces the unnecessary wastage of time. This enables the developers to get real-time information about the projects.
Final Words:
We have seen the significant reasons why an AngularJS development company can be chosen for your next project. Although AngularJS or Angular may not be the best-suited option for every kind of requirement in the market, it definitely is one of the best technologies for creating a wide range of feature-rich and high-quality applications for several industrial verticals.
With this, we have come to the end of this blog and would like to know your vital thoughts in the comment section. You may even drop us a mail at [email protected] for any other details!

Does Trump haveskill to implent such a plan? NO HE’S TOO UNSTABLE TO GET ITDONE.
Yet even before the coronavirus arrived, America was suffering. Its economy, long the envy of the world, has simply stopped working for a large swathe of the population. Real wages have either remained flat or fallen for everyone except the top ten percentile, leaving 43 percent of Americans working for $15 an hour or less. The median middle-class family has just about $4,000 in liquid assets, and would have trouble scraping up $400 in case of an emergency. All the while, living costs—including rent, education, and healthcare—have skyrocketed. In fact, over 10 percent of Americans have no healthcare, with many more remaining underinsured. America’s once-mighty middle class has gone from being first to thirty-second per capita among OECD countries.
All this transpired before the coronavirus hit. Since then, tens of millions of Americans have become unemployed, with millions of jobs likely lost permanently. The virus has exposed a brutal yet simple reality, which is that the United States is acting like a failing nation, passively allowing the degradation of critical institutions and its economy at the hands of an out-of-touch elite—one that seems incapable of realistically assessing challenges, adapting to rapidly-changing circumstances, and responding to threats.
The frustration over this sorry state of affairs is palpable. Look no further than the protests against police after the death of George Floyd, which in some cities curdled in rampant looting and rioting. This behavior isn’t just the result of popular anger against police misbehavior; it’s about everything. It’s the American people being fed up with, among other things, predatory business practices, growing poverty, massive debt, constant violence, and shrinking economic opportunity.
It is painfully clear there is a massive demand for serious social, government, and economic reform. What America needs is an economic reform agenda on the scale of the New Deal, backed by a professional consensus and a bipartisan coalition that is willing to put some political issues to the side in the interest of saving the country from going down a dangerous path. Not only that, but a renewed U.S. economy must be up to the task of being once again competitive on the world stage, especially as it braces itself for long-term great power competition with China.
This will require bold policymaking, rivaling that of changes achieved in previous crises in American history, along with innovative new ideas for economic reform. Three ideas in particular stand out as worthy of consideration: the addition of a new government department to coordinate domestic and international economic and trade policy; the creation of a public state bank system to provide credit for businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs across the country; and a reform of existing land zoning codes, which prevent U.S. cities from being utilized to their maximum extent while simultaneously depriving millions of the opportunity for a better life.
FIRST, IF the United States is to once again pursue global competitiveness, renew its own strategic industry capacity, and address domestic economic needs, then it is essential to devise a new mechanism that can better coordinate and elevate economic and trade policy. This means the creation of an entirely new federal department that can develop and execute a national economic strategy.
This is not a new idea in American policymaking. In 1983, the Reagan administration submitted a very detailed proposal to Congress for a “Department of International Trade and Industry” that would “consolidate the trade and industry functions of the Commerce Department with the Office of the United States Trade Representative.” The concept appeared again in 1992, when third-party presidential candidate Ross Perot argued that the United States “should study Japan’s Ministry of International Trade and Industry, which co-ordinates government and private-sector economic strategy for that country, and adapt such a model for America.” And as recently as 2012, the Obama administration demonstrated similar thinking when it proposed to merge the Department of Commerce, the Small Business Administration (SBA), the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), the Export-Import Bank (EXIM), the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (now reformed and known as the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation, or DFC), and the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA). The resulting empowered Commerce Department would, in the White House’s words, “help entrepreneurs and businesses of all sizes grow, compete, and hire, leveraging one cohesive Department with one mission: to spur job creation and expand the U.S. economy.”
The idea for such a department was revived last year by professors Timothy Meyer and Ganesh Sitaraman at Vanderbilt Law School. In an article for American Affairs, they go further than all of the aforementioned proposals, calling for a “Department of Economic Growth and Security,” which would consolidate numerous offices, agencies, and programs that are currently either independent or located within existing government departments. These not only include the SBA, USTR, EXIM, DFC, and USTDA, but also the International Trade Administration, the Economic Development Administration, the Census Bureau, the National Institute for Standards and Technology, the Bureau of Industry and Security, the creation of a new Economic Security Agency, which “would combine the government’s fractured efforts at export controls, technology transfer, investment controls, and other economic security policies,” and more.
A new federal department focused on all of the above could achieve many things simultaneously: advance American trade interests abroad while, in Meyer and Sitaraman’s words, “addressing economic dislocations and economic security issues that arise from increased global economic interconnectedness” and disruptions; elevate the status of geoeconomic policymaking within the U.S. government; play a key informational function by gathering valuable economic intelligence that can be made available to Congress, the intelligence community, and the public; and reduce the harmful influence of “well-connected but unrepresentative industry interest groups” in policymaking.
Creating this new department will not be a simple task. Putting aside for a moment the formidable challenge of actually reorganizing a significant part of the federal bureaucracy, the sitting president will first have to call on Congress to reinstate the presidential authority necessary to do so. While there may be some partisan opposition to this, given the tumultuous state of American politics, both the necessity of this reform and its achievable benefits should serve as a bipartisan rallying point. Streamlining government to improve the effectiveness of U.S. trade policy while simultaneously making it easier for businesses, especially small ones, to find the help they need to expand and grow is a cause that everyone can get behind.
SECOND, INCREASING economic opportunity for ordinary Americans and addressing domestic inequality requires addressing the problem of concentrated financial power. “Big finance,” unfortunately, tends to be both predatory and speculative if unbound by rules and regulations, resulting in an unstable economic system. And at the moment, the industry is certainly concentrated: the top five institutions (JPMorgan, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citibank, and U.S. Bank) make up almost half (around 47 percent) of the total bank assets in the United States. It would behoove the nation if finance could be deconcentrated and credit made available to a wider range of small- and medium-sized businesses via a greater number of smaller, regional banks that are easier to regulate. Rather than taking up the challenge of breaking up the big banks, this task could also be accomplished via the creation of a system of public state banks.
Public banks are exactly what they sound like: financial institutions that are funded with taxpayer revenue and owned by and accountable to the government, serving as a viable alternative to private banks. At the moment, there exists only one instance of such in the United States: the Bank of North Dakota (BND). Created in 1919 with only $2 million, it was intended to serve as a way of protecting local farmers, businessmen, and other commercial concerns from the high interest rates and economic instability of the time. Over the past century though, the BND has proven to be something of an extraordinary success. The bank’s annual reports attest to this, with the 2018 report stating a profit of $159 million and a state return on investment of 18 percent. This funneling of funds to North Dakota’s state treasury has helped it avoid revenue shortfalls for years.
So how does this sort of bank work in practice, and how can it help decentralize American finance? The ongoing story of the Union State Bank—based in Hazen, North Dakota—and its relationship with the BND, as related by an in-depth report in YES! magazine, provides a helpful example. Though it is a small community bank with a bit over $130 million in deposits and $147 million in loans, investments, and other assets, Union State is able to punch above its weight. The bank “served as the lead local lender for a $30.5 million medical center that opened in 2016,” and also “helped finance manufactured housing for new workers attracted by the shale oil boom.”
This is possible because of State Union’s partnership with the BND, which works as a “bankers’ bank, partnering with local financial institutions to leverage the state’s deposits in ways designed to strengthen local banks and credit unions.” In the case of the aforementioned mortgages, for instance, the BND helped by buying up some of these mortgages, similar to how Fannie Mae, the U.S.-government sponsored enterprise that makes mortgages available to low- and moderate-income borrowers, operates.
There are other examples of how the BND helps local financial institutions. Participation loans is one:
In a participation loan, the loan originator covers part of the principal amount borrowed, then it brings in other lenders behind the scenes to cover the rest, and everyone shares in the interest paid on the loan. Participation loans let small banks share the risk with larger institutions, while keeping the larger institutions in the background. Most borrowers don’t know that the Bank of North Dakota is involved through a participation loan unless they ask, says Gary Petersen, chairperson for Cornerstone Banks.
That’s intentional. It allows local banks to leverage a deeper pool of money while maintaining their relationships with their clients. According to its 2018 Economic Development Report, the Bank of North Dakota made 491 commercial loans totaling $971 million and 402 agricultural loans totaling $182 million. The vast majority of those were participation loans in partnership with local financial institutions across the state.
The BND’s success in helping local banks support and grow local businesses also comes with a notable side effect: the partnership model and the accessibility to capital it allows encourages the creation of new financial institutions. As a result, North Dakota has more banks and credit unions per capita than any other state in the country. This is precisely the sort of financial decentralization that would benefit the rest of America and is particularly pertinent given existing economic and racial inequality, as the recent protests over the killing of George Floyd have reminded us. In fact, according to 2013 remarks by Martin Gruenberg, the former chair of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the role of minority depository institutions, or MDIs (i.e., banks owned by minorities), play a crucial role in economic advancement:
In 2011, the median African-American MDI made 67 percent of its mortgage loans to African-American borrowers. The median Hispanic MDI made 65 percent of its mortgage loans to Hispanic borrowers. And, the median Asian-American MDI made 57 percent of its mortgage loans to Asian-Americans. By contrast, the median non-MDI lender made less than one percent of its mortgage loans to each of these three groups.
Yet the number of MDIs has been steadily decreasing in past years, particularly following the 2008 financial crisis and the passage of Dodd-Frank, which imposed numerous burdensome regulations on all financial institutions. The number of African-American-owned banks has dropped by half, for example. Support from state banks could radically change this dynamic, and lead to the proliferation of new financial institutions that would help ordinary Americans across the country.
Understandably, the BND and its model has garnered attention across the United States. In New Jersey, a 2018 feasibility study for a public state bank estimated that every $10 million invested in lending could yield between $16 and $21 million in gross state product, as well as raise state earnings by $3.8 to $5.2 million and create many new jobs. In California, the state legislature opted to go even further with the idea last year, passing a law making it possible for local municipal/city governments to start their own public banks.
Yet there are a number of hurdles preventing the creation of public state banks, particularly when it comes to the matter of cost. A 2010 feasibility study in Massachusetts estimated that it would take about $3.6 billion to start a bank in the state. The city of Los Angeles realized that, unlike the BND, it cannot initially fund its own public bank using state bonds, and city bonds can only be used for infrastructure projects, thus requiring either allocated funds from the city’s budget or outside money from philanthropists.
It is here that the federal government can help. In 1862, Congress passed the first of the Morrill Land-Grant Acts, which distributed federal land to states and other localities for the purpose of creating agricultural and mechanical colleges. Supported by additional acts in 1890 and 1994, these colleges would grow into the state university system, as well as Cornell University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a number of other prestigious institutions. Congress should take inspiration from these examples and pass a law donating federal land and/or granting federal funds to the states for the purpose of creating a public state banking system that can encourage and facilitate economic growth and development.
THIRD AND finally, it is imperative that America reclaim the ability to build in urban areas by passing either national or state urban zoning codes. Doing so would unleash the true economic potential of America’s cities, resulting in significant growth, unlocking new opportunities for millions of people, and paving a path to the middle class. This is especially important, given the economic might of major U.S. cities: data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis indicates that a mere twenty-three metropolitan areas account for over half of U.S. GDP, and that share continues to rise. Yet these same metro areas are also plagued by a deep inequality that is threatening our nation’s stability.
Consider the most pressing problem currently plaguing the San Francisco metropolitan area, home to Silicon Valley and America’s tech giants: a lack of affordable housing. San Francisco has the highest median price for a one-bedroom rental (at the time of writing, a little over $3,600 a month) in the country. The av

CSS Grid
This week was more focused on the css grid to make some new responsive design for all devices. This week also looked at a re design for the websites design before coding began.
What is the Grid
Css grid is a layout method that is in css, it is designed for the two dimensional layout of items on the web page. The grids support for Chrome, Firefox and Safari was shipped in March 2017. Edge took a bit longer to ship support waiting till October 2017 before support was finally shipped for the browser. The gird is defined by the css and not the html. The grid is used to create layouts that can be redefined by media queries and adapt to different contexts. The grid lets designers and coders place elements in the page where they want and where best suits the design. The grid allows for designers to not have to worry about compromise with basic structure and responsive design in order to work on the web page and things are less likely to over lap due to size changes die to each element having its own area in the grid which also allows the content sot scale for the devices width which is unlike html which allows some elements to overlap if this is required for the design.
There is a simple amount to know in terms of grid terminology. There is the Grid Lines, Gird Tracks, Grid Cell and the Grid Area. Below are the simple explanations for the grids terminologies:
Grid Lines: The grid lines are simply lines that make up the grid. The lines can be horizontal or vertical and they can be refereed to by number or by name in css.
Gird Tracks: The grid tracks are the spaces between the grids and again these can be horizontal or vertical spaces that are defined in the css of the website.
Gird Cell: The grid cell is the space that is created from 4 gird lines, the basic way to think of it is that its one of the squares that the grid makes up. This is the smallest unit that is available in the grid and this is where elements are placed into for the grid. Another easy way to view it is that its similar to a table cell.
Gird Area: The grid area is any area of the gird that is defined by four gird lines. This is similar to a cell but can be any four grid lines. Thinking of the smallest square as a cell and the biggest possible four sided square as the area is an easy way to look at it. The grid can contain multiple cells.
Grid or Felxbox with auto fill and fit
Gird and flexbox are similar ways of making design for the web. There are a few differences the biggest being that flexbox is one dimensional while grid is tow dimensional. The Gird is also container based while flex box is content based meaning that the size for a felx depends on the size of the content and how much it makes the container flex while the grid is container based meaning that the size is determined in the css tag so its more fixed. When using the CSS Grid one can use the repeat tag this will repeat a defined number of columns that are defined such as five columns with spacing of one. Using the min max property one can determine the width of the columns in the row after the amount one would like to show. The difference between using auto fit and auto fill can be seen below. With auto fit the Continent will stretch to fill the entire row but with auto fill the browser will empty the columns to occupy space in the rows.

Media Queries
A media query is an html/css functionality that allows the elements of the page to scale and readjust to fit different sizes of screens for different media purposes such as viewing a site on a desktop, tablet or phone. This is considered a core technology for responsive design on the web and was implemented as a standard in 2012 along with CSS3 functionalists. Media queries of a media type and one or more expressions that will check for cretin media features mainly the size of a screen. The media query is always in a true or false state in the web browser the query is again always being alerted to media changes so that the second a window changes size it will turn from false to true activating a specific set of styles in the style sheet and when they are not required they are resulted to false where the main css can take over. The main website will be using the main css but other versions of the site for mobiles and tablets will be running on true states of the media query.

Where to learn
This short paragraph will briefly describe where the best places to lar some basic web code are. The best place to learn anything it google there are countless forums and articles about certain subjects and people talking about how to do things, in terms of web there are loads of forms where people are more than willing to help out with problems with code and some people put their blogs up showing how to make something in code for free. The best place for video tutorials is of course YouTube, YouTube is similar to google in that there is almost certainly a video fro any topic with active comment sections for help. Videos may be better to learn as they can take people step by step on how to make something and its less alarming to look at a 20 minute video compared to a very long list of text on a blog. The last place to learn is lynda.com, the website is a combination of text and video where one can see a YouTube video with all of the subtitles in a paragraph below, this platform also gives access to all the files one needs and provides additional test or task for people to test themselves and really learn.
Re-Design for website
The original design for the website was a first attempt and with any design it was felt that it could be done better or in a way that made more sense. The original showcased the full shield in the centre but in the below image it was deiced to make the word fullerton more prominent as this is what was the key factor to the logo and brand. The colour scheme didn't change but the logo was split in half to not have the logo stacked with the font but more to one side so that the fullerton name would be the first thing the eye seen.
The next design was done in the attempt to create a more bright and modern look to the site. Using black bold text with a brighter colour that matched with the original red of the shield was created and was placed into more angular looking segments for the logo and buttons while the main title text sued the large amount of white space. The word designer was made more prominent as to make it clear as possible what the site was about and the segments had a small shadow behind them to add some 3D elements to the page. The shield was striped back and simplified as it was belied there was to much on the shield and that a simplified version worked more universally especially on mobile devices.
The third iteration of the design went back to using the full logo and tried to replicated the design entirely from the shield causing the white and red split to emulate the split of colours down the middle of the shield and of course the red and white for the family colours as well. The logo was place onto of ones name which was a higher opacity compared to the underlining text or sub headings highlighting what was on the site. The buttons where black and white to be visible on the two sides of the background and where on opposites sides of the shields, the other big additon was putting facebook and twitter links on the main sight in the bottom right corner so that they wouldn't obstruct the main design to much but they also follow the rule of attraction for the eye by being down there.
The final design for the website followed the desire to simplify things and using the very basic of what the user needed to know when they landed on the page. The biggest change was that the name “Fullerton Designs” took up much more space on the page and it was placed on a white background, the buttons where moved to the top and centred so they would be able to stay in the same spot but not be confusing as they wouldn't move or get in the way of page content. The logo was taken again and the crown was taken from the shield and placed on top of the Fullerton name as this replicated what the shield was doing by showing that the family name is what the logo was about and the idea with the shield was to replicate a strong and royal look to emulate the pride in the family name but also in the work but the crown on its own replicates that due to some of the thoughts people think of when they see a crown. The crown was tied with the shield by combing the colours and splitting them down the middle, the things that a person can find on the page were right below the logo and the social media was taken off the landing as this was meant to only serve as a landing for the site.
having the logo looking like this allows for the use of the crown icon to be used as a symbol for the brand and making it versatile as all the pages on the site can replicate the main logo by using this crown as seen below.
Below are the revised editions of all of the pages in this new design. The first being the work page. The design for the pages was to use a blog like look where the sides of the pages would use a lot of white space while the centre would be where all the content would be and for the work page the css grid would be sued to make a gallery of the best pieces of work that are current for oneself.
The next page after that is the projects page, the projects page follows the same layout of the work pages due to them being so similar, the main difference being that the projects are placed in a single row column rather than a two rowed column. The other piece of design is a pencil to symbolise the different page and adding some personalisation to it, this is still an element that may be discarded for the site. The actual projects pages again follow this single column style but they also use a gallery that can be clicked giving a brief description of the image and below this a more in depth explanation should the user want to read this. The white space allows for the project pages to be more about the project by making backgrounds that relate tot eh projects as can be seen below.
The last page is the about page which includes a simple description about oneself and highlight the main education qualifications that one possess and is doing but there is also a CTA in the form of a large button for the full download of the cv should someone want to see everything.

Our footer needs some styling so we’d add the following styles to the App.css file:
footer { position: absolute; bottom: -55px; width: 100%; background-color: #333; color:#fff; }
