"Percurso Humano" - "Human Route". Acrylic on canvas. Painted in 1998, by one of my favourite artists: Malangatana Valente Ngwenya (1936-2011) - commonly known just as "Malangatana".

This amazing piece of art tells the story of the Portuguese colonialism and the oppression of the Mozambican people (Malangatana was from Mozambique). Take a second to pay attention to all the details and you will feel absolutely mesmerized.

I simply cannot tell you how much I love this paiting that I found in the Crato Municipal Museum.

The Watchers in my AU are meant to be complicated and confusing. It’s part of why Grian stays for so long, why he’s so conflicted and why it bothers him to the point of venting to Mumbo.

They can be very kind, they do love him, they compliment him on everything. He gets gifts and everything given to him.

But on the other hand, bc they love him, they can be critical, telling him why that and why this, not that not this, they have pretty high standards for Beings that have seen everything already, not easy to genuinely impress.

They give him food, as parental figures should, anything he asks, but that’s sorta the problem, he always has to ask, there’s no way around this, no independence. He can ask for ingredients to cook by himself, but they’ll watch him.

He’s given clothes to wear, always within Watcher standard, dark and loose garments, open for his wings. He’d honestly prefer brighter colours, but that’s not rly a choice.

They tell him he’s special, he was chosen, better than the rest, a champion, a hero, and while it pets his ego, he feels pressure, they went out on a limp for him and he still can’t do enough. There is so much guilt.

Being here in the end messes with his psyche a bit, he’s much shorter than everyone, he has to rely on everyone, they all treat him like a kid, petting his hair or moving him via his shoulders instead of asking. He accidentally leans into this sometimes as a subconscious coping mechanism, he cries easier than he thinks he should. Tantrums where he has to press his face into his hands, or grumble and stomp off. He always has to apologize.

Despite being treated like a child, he is a Watcher child, so he studies a lot, he trains a lot. If he throws up from training, that’s no excuse (well by Flora’s standards)

He does feel a sort of comfort or safety around Aether, She’s lenient with him, but they’re definitely still not equals. She still hides things from him She thinks is too serious, She’s still overtly positive. He thinks abt Her sometimes, in hindsight he knows it was a family dynamic, and he feels guilt abt this too.

The Watchers love him, but they are ultimately overbearing, overwhelming, and frankly quite scary if you don’t play by their rules. Grian has reason to be cautious, the silent threats that hang over his head, never directly said to him, but traitors are cast out, if you’re not worthy you don’t deserve these gifts of wings or eyes. I think he’s convinced if they ever find him they’ll rip his eyes out with talons.

He won’t admit that he likes the attention sometimes, when his efforts are acknowledged and/or praised, when his hair is brushed. He wants their approval.

However, this is the only ‘human’ contact he gets. He doesn’t have anyone else, so it’s taken with a grain of salt how genuine his feelings are abt the attention.

for real WHERE does the idea that [utdr humans] are nongendered so that "you can project on them" come from. their literal character arcs are about NOT being a blank slate to be filled in by the audience

i think i understand the assumption on some level for undertale, because there is a very intentional effort to make you identify with the "player character" in order to make your choices feel like your own (the beating heart of undertale's metanarrative lies in giving you an alternative path to violence against its enemies after all, and whether you're still willing to persue it for your own selfish reasons. YOUR agency is crucial).

of course, the cardinal plot twist of the main ending sweeps the rug from under your feet on that in every way, and frisk's individuality becomes, in turn, a tool to further UT's OTHER main theme: completionism as a form of diegetic violence within the story. replaying the game would steal frisk's life and happy ending from them for our own perverse sentimentality, emotionally forcing our hand away from the reset button.

i think their neutrality absolutely aids in that immersion. but also, there's this weird attitude by (mostly) cis fans where it being functional within the story makes it... somehow "editable" and "up to the player" as well? which is gross and shows their ass on how they approach gender neutrality in general lol.

but also like. there's plenty of neutral, non PCharacters in undertale and deltarune. even when undertale was just an earthbound fangame and the player immersion metanarrative was completely absent, toby still described frisk as a "young, androgynous person". sometimes characters are just neutral by design. it's not that hard to understand lol.

anyone who makes this argument for kris deltarune is braindead. nothing else to say about it.

Do you think theres more to vengeance clover than simply being a genocidal maniac?

Absolutely.

Clover's killing spree is motivated by his desire to deliver 'justice' to Monsterkind for what had happened to the Fallen Children but it's even deeper than that.

At the beginning of the Neutral Run Final Boss, Flowey revealed that he had Reset Clover's journey hundreds of times, each run ending in Clover's death with potentially even more in between. Can you imagine that, dying hundreds, maybe thousands of times but being unable to remember it?

Except, Clover definitely remembers. He can learn from previous runs, doing better each time and making different choices despite Flowey's insistence that he shouldn't remember anything. If a Monster can experience deja vu after a Reset, then a human like Clover would remember much more.

All that trauma, buried deep within Clover's subconscious, waiting to be let out. Eventually, that anger was released in the form of the twisted justice that we know Vengeance Clover for. He marched through the Underground, hunting down dangerous Monsters, potentially not even releasing that he would have never even considered something like this a few hours ago.

But despite the pain... despite the anger, suffering, trauma and corruption of Clover's morals, he still keeps a sense of honour. He doesn't attack Monsters that do not threaten him. He (in most instances I hope) honours Starlo's duel. He spares Martlet not once but twice. He even searches Zenith Martlet's memories not to find a weakness but for a reason to kill her.

And most notably, he fulfils the mission. Clover could have simply left the Underground, with no King and dozens dead. Instead, he takes the time to free the souls of his brethren, the reason he jumped into the Underground in the first place. The Axis fight alone proves to us that he cares deeply for his fellow humans. That devotion may have even been strengthened because of the pain that Monsters caused him.

Many people see Vengeance Clover as a mass murderer with extremist ideals.

What I see, is a kid with dreams of being a hero, tortured by a false god and Monsterkind's inability to see the errors of their ways. A kid who was forced to compromise his morals for the sake of survival. A kid who, despite the pain and suffering, still shows signs of goodness. A kid who became the very thing Monsters feared.

Humanity's Vengeance and Monsterkind's Punishment. True Justice.

That is who Vengeance Clover is.
