↬ “The only kind of work I’ve ever really been interested in craftily holds up the mirror to what is really going on in the world, and from the safety of that ‘fictional’ construct, allow us to hopefully re-evaluate how we can live our lives for the better. It’s great to be a part of a piece that is so relatable.”

Emily Berrington photographed by Annemarie Sterian for Vulkan Magazine
I was shocked to discover last year that the ratio of men to woman shown on stage and screen in the UK is 2:1. There was actually greater gender equality on screen 100 years ago. The Era 50:50 campaign seeks to highlight the gender inequality that exists not only on the stage or in front of the camera, but behind the scenes too. It also proposes ways in which this can change, for example asking production companies to ensure that over the course of a year they employ 50:50 male and female writers, directors, actors and so on. I feel very passionate about it not just in terms of the opportunities available to women in creative arts, but also the impact it has on audiences and society as a whole.

Emily Berrington by Ram Shergill for Protagonist Magazine
↬ “I was so thrilled to be playing this character because she is very tough but also vulnerable, she’s very intelligent but also completely ignorant of a lot of how the world works.
It’s been very interesting to discover the world through the eyes of the character as somebody who hasn’t experienced much ‘normal’ life, and is learning as she goes along. There was something very satisfying about playing that.
As soon as I read the script last year, my first reaction was ‘well you know, I’m not necessarily a huge sci-fi fan , what’s this gonna be like?’ and as soon as I read it, I just loved it and thought it was the best script I had read in a really long time.”

What is the bravest thing you have ever done?
I guess pursuing my dream of becoming an actor. It’s every parent’s worst nightmare when their kid walks in and says they want to be an actor. I got a little pat on the head and was told: “Now back to the real world.” But I was never a child of the real world.
