Faulkner’s ‘The Bear’ is on equal ground with Hemingway’s ‘Old Man and The Sea.’ He said he intended the work to include the fourth part when read as a chapter of “Go Down, Moses,” but to exclude it when read independently. I kinda prefer it as a novella, where the narrative drive is in full force. Glad to reread this one in the coming days. The three toed bear image on the front boards is classic in my mind. Louisa May Alcott’s “How They Ran Away”
“Besides the two knives there were strings, nails, matches, a piece of putty, fish-hooks, and two very dirty handkerchiefs."There, sir, that's a first-rate fit-out for hunters; and with the jolly basket of lunch Mrs. Mullin gave us, we can get on tip-top for two or three days," said Tommy, eager to be off.” https://americanliterature.com/author/louisa-may-alcott/short-story/how-they-ran-away

FIRE LIGHT: both the fires crackle and roar around me. One on each side of the elk to provide light while I work, as well as add some comforting warmth. Inventory of flashlights between the three of us was dismal at best... the count revealed two in total, both were failing, and just cell phone lights remaining for the long journey out. We need to conserve batteries...bad! I snapped this picture with my phone then turned it off as a back up light. "Well, I will have to work by fire light in order to quarter and skin the bull." I said. This was going to take some extra time, as well as man power to keep the fires burning bright. "Gather up pine sap" I said to Jamison. "Pack it in the root end of a small dead pine and light it up as a torch." The sap torch helped cut the shadows allowing me to see my cuts as we flicked off our flashlights to save batteries. The warm glow of the torch, the surrounding snow, the crisp air, and the blade of my sharp knife gleaning in the fire light. This is elk hunting. A bull, hunters willing to work for it, and a memory of an amazing adventure. #livewildhunthard #guidelife #huntingstories #hunting #huntergather #elkhunting @uahunt @gerbergear

Amateur Radio - It kinda saved my ass once
So I got a new amateur radio for christmas, I’ve had it on my work bench for the last few days as I’ve been setting it up and getting it configured and all, but that’s not what I care to talk about.
I was thinking a bit about why I got into amateur radio, and what it’s done for me over the years. So I thought I’d throw in some stories about it...
I first got into amateur radio after a somewhat serious earthquake in 2008, it was an oddly shallow quake, and it was only a few miles from where I worked. I managed to get a quick call to my wife to let her know I was ok, and then I sent text messages to the rest of my family letting them know the same. In the modern world in which we live, the cellular network immediately crumbled, not because it was affected by the earthquake, but because everyone picked up the phone and either said “I’m ok, I’m safe, I’ll be home soon” or “whoa did you feel that?!”
We got lucky, it was a minor-ish quake (in the 5′s) and there was no serious damage. At the place I worked, I was surrounded by large heavy shelves, and a non-trivial amount of explosives. About 3 weeks later I had a ham license, and at my encouragement both my wife and several other family members also got licensed. It’s really just to be able to send that quick message “I’m ok, and I’ll see you soon” or in the odd case that you’re not OK, let them know that too.
Fast forward a few months, and I finally took my Aunt and Uncle up on the invitation to come up to their ranch and hunt wild pigs. I’ve spent a lot of my time roaming the empty deserts of southern california, however going up to this ranch was a new experience in terms of remoteness. It was an 8 hour drive up I-5 (it’s in norcal) then get off the highway, drive 30 miles west, and then another 20 miles north on a forest road.
We were going to be there for a week, hiking around getting a lay of the land, and try to find our footing as a group of new hunters. Most of this time was spent walking, looking at stuff through binoculars, and not seeing anything. However there was still the constant set of camp chores that needed to be done, firewood had to be gathered, cut and hauled, water had to be pulled from the guzzler system hauled to camp, and then filtered.
All was going well, until one night while we were at the far end my truck started making a strange noise. Well, as it turned out part of my fan-belt had ripped itself apart and was flapping around the inside of the engine compartment.
At this point, we had to limp it back to camp and figure out what we were going to do about it. I think at this point, we only had one vehicle on site, and were far enough into the sticks that cell phones just wasn’t going to happen.
For some reason, I had this wild idea about limping into town, buying a new belt, and then finishing the chores (It’s still early, it’s only 8pm right?) ignoring that the nearest small town probably rolled up it’s sidewalks at 7.
Fast forward a bit in our thinking and our planning, I was able to get onto one of the local HAM (another term for amateur radio) repeaters and get in touch with someone in another near-by town. He was nice enough to call a few places in town to A) see if they were open and B) see if they had the part I needed.
Being the hot-head I was, I was all packed up to drive into town that night (God knows why). A little bit later, the guy came back and informed me the only places they were still open didn’t have the part, and that I should try the local Napa that was only open between 9 and 5:30.
The following morning, that same fellow (I think his name was Mike) was nice enough to call the auto-parts place make sure they had the part, and put it on hold for us. Thankfully, another person had showed up in the morning, and was willing to drive me back into town to get the part.
I can’t say what could have happened if I had charged off to find the replacement part, it’s likely the belt would have cut loose, and I would have spent the night in a cold car on the side of a country road. Instead some stranger made it so I stayed in camp, warmed by the fire drinking cold beer.
I don’t remember your name anymore, but I still owe you one Stranger.

Whether it is your first bull or your sixth, they are all special because of the work that goes into it. Getting an elk on public land is no easy feat. Shaun started hunting with me seven years ago. On that trip he took his first bull with a bow after I called it into range. Since then he has taken six bulls in seven years. He has really dedicated himself by constantly shooting and staying in shape. Guiding and hunting with Shaun is something I look forward to each year. All his effort preparing for the hunt outside of the season always pays off when it comes time to hunt. Successful elk hunting has as much to do with what you do out of the field as what you do in the field. #livewildhunthard #guidelife #huntingstories #hunting #elkhunting #publiclandranch

CALLING: I make a series of bull grunts that seem to quickly dissipate in the vast surroundings. For such a large area it feels hopeless that anything would be able to hear the light call... much less respond. I freeze. Mostly in disbelief, as a large bodied animal pops out 15 yards away. A bull moose steps into the clearing without us hearing a single stick break beforehand. Larger than the tallest racehorse and yet, as quiet as a whitetail in the woods. The bull lets out a few muted grunts while looking straight through our camouflage. He then sways and continues on his war path to seek out what made the call moments before. @uahunt #livewildhunthard #ridgereaper #uahunt #bowhunting #hunting #huntingstories #moosehunting #alaska #archery #primebows @primearcheryg5 @yeti @wilderness_athlete @gerbergear @onxhunt
