Paul Dano Pokemon Teams P2

I made too many of these! We'll get the There Will Be Blood ones out of the way first!

Eli Sunday's team when he's in Little Boston. Mostly made of Pokemon a kid can catch without going too far off the farm. Kaddabra being there to help him in being a prophet

Eli's team in the city: More majestic and fancy Pokemon. Like he's trying to shred any part of him that could be seen as a simple farmboy.

Daniel Plainview's team is based around one: kicking Eli's ass and two working and mining. Strong Pokemon that support prospecting or can work on a oil drill. Chansey is there to act as a nanny for HW.

Speaking of! HW's team is made up of Pokemon a kid can easily catch! Whismur is a little ironic all things considered but he's just started his Pokemon journey so the kid is trying his best!

Alright! Back to Paul Dano! Here's a sad one!

Barry Milland/Alex Jones: Now that's a team a kid who was just starting out on their journey would make. It's weird he's never gotten any badges. Strange how kids went missing on Route 1...

Jay I don't think would partake in Pokemon battles but he's got them to help ALF with non-lethal moves. Who else would have the paitence to raise a Magikarp to a Gyarados?

Jay has a slowpoke because they rescued a herd of them from getting their tails cut off. The last one that was freed refused to leave his side and now they're inseparable.

Louis Ives: Pretty Pokemon with some power is their entire thing! I think Louis wouldn't be as interested in battling as they are in contests! Also ha! Egg Pokémon for a person struggling with a gender identity.

Thaddaeus: His Pokémon are all dark, toxic and nasty just like their owner! Nothing much to say but Wheezing will eat his cigarette butts.

Martin Asher: He's got a Growler cause he smashed that guy's head in with a rock. But his real aces are Frostlass and Mawile: his two spoiled, powerful ice queens. (One is literally an ice queen and the other has that personality)

Calvin Weir Fields: He's got fancy Pokemon two dog shinnies are pretty iconic! Before you ask no he doesn't have Vamporeon for THAT reason. One Poison type to show how toxic he is

That's true. It's a valid way of looking at this. I like seeing other characterizations being explored, so it's always a shame when people only go with one and fit characters like Manfred von Karma into this mold where they're horrible abusive monsters with no redeeming qualities. There's so much to interpret that isn't outright shown in the games, including his relationships with coworkers and what happens after he ends up in jail (for instance, what his reaction to getting the death penalty would be). Although the scene from Turnabout Goodbyes where Phoenix and Maya enter the evidence room, and he tazes Maya, was screwed up. But I feel like Manfred is capable of valuing others above perfection, which is what he ultimately strives for when it comes to prosecuting. He thinks that if he isn't flawless in every sense of the word, it counts as weakness, and he chooses to avoid that at all times which mostly causes damage in the long run, never asking anyone for help. That's probably why he's so incapable of letting go of anger as well as the grudges he holds. Manfred is haunted by memories, mostly involving DL-6, and unwittingly makes that worse by acting on impulse. He's not satisfied that other people are living easier lives and drags them down to his level, which includes his pupils, unfortunately. But I do think he wants to avoid those same mistakes, trying to do that with his children by acting as a strict mentor, toughening them up so they can be prepared for the future.

Maybe he didn't have the best parents himself, and that carried over. While he fails in the long run and ruins what respect Miles developed for him, Franziska still admires her father to the very end, wanting to carry on Manfred's legacy independently. And they'll still have good memories, even if there are mostly bad ones.

Unrelated, but there's a movie I watched with a similar villainous protagonist who has self-centered ideals, There Will Be Blood.

Daniel Plainview is an oil baron who isolates himself from everyone after striking it rich. The relationship he has with his son is pretty close to what Manfred and Edgeworth have; Daniel uses H.W. to look professional during meetings and play the part of a caring father even though he's relatively indifferent about it.

Daniel also develops an extreme grudge against Eli, a pastor who humilates him in front of a congregation and wants to encroach on Daniel's property, which is more or less how Manfred regards Gregory Edgeworth (though for different reasons). Both of these antagonists end up killing their worst enemy, losing everything in the process. But Daniel starts to hate how he's become and feels guilt for it, so he doesn't really seem to view himself as being perfect in comparison. He also remorsefully states that he abandoned his child after being goaded into it by Eli, during the humilation scene. So he does actually care about H.W., but it's sort of justified that his son cuts him off later in the film as a successful adult.

The whole thing reminded me a lot of Turnabout Goodbyes, though since TWBB came out in 2007 I doubt this was intended as a direct reference.

What you said here checks out though. It's not OOC to depict Manfred as being "normal", having average conversations about things, or just enjoying himself. Like the scene from the anime when he takes the kids out to a diner and they get breakfast. So I'm not sure why some fans are so intent to prove otherwise; the evidence is right there. And von Karma definitely deserves another vacation from work. Or therapy. Dude doesn't know how to have fun, lol

i am as usual having Von Karma family thoughts. Manfred loves his daughter and takes her out for pancakes and brags about her to his coworkers and read her silly stories as a kid but when faced with directing his attention towards her or the perfect revenge that is Miles Edgeworth, he chooses the latter. His whole Thing is that his selfishness and pettiness subsumes every other aspect of his life. He let DL6 poison and consume him until it rotted away all his other relationships. It's about the deterioration over time! It's about loving things and hurting them anyway! Franziska grows up but he's stuck in the past and he can never be what she needs him to be as long as he refuses to let it go!! It's not that Manfred wants to hurt Franziska, it's not that he hates her, it's just that he hates the Edgeworths more than he will ever love her!!

Daniel plainview from There Will Be Blood is so fucking NPD it's insane. And this isn't about his capitalistic greed and murders and the abuse of HW showing how evil and villanous he is. It's about how his envy and need to see others fail causes the utter destruction of all meaningful familial relationships in his life. It's about how he's portrayed as dirty and empty and passed out and alcoholic and miserable in his opulent mansion as it's devoid of meaningful connections. It's about the single tear he sheds and the physical distance he created in his seat to will himself up to be able to abandon HW on the train. It's about how he implicitely states he views himself as above other by people by means of literally not being a person (as revealed by his voice tone) and in the same scene says if it's in himself it's in Henry, and as Henry is murdered he admits he's no one, showing a literaly split in Daniel's mind as Henry goes from a godlike status to no one at all. It's about how Daniel says things he straight up doesn't believe just to convince himself that they are true and it's about how he so struggles to admit he's abandoned his child but once he does speak it he twists into an aggressive display of pure mourning. It's about his guilt and remorse not at killing Henry but at the knowledge that he had a brother he never knew and no one will be able to fill that bond he never had.

going a little bonkers bananas about hw plainview therewillbeblood. like implicitly or explicitly it's been impressed upon him his role is to stand there and look cute. on some level he knows he acts as a prop for daniel, right, he knows that the father-son thing is a big draw. but it seems like his understanding is that they're leveraging something that actually exists, that daniel does love him and cares for him, and that even if they play it up to get investors, it's real. the first cracks in that show with the accident, when daniel leaves him hurt and confused and terrified, restrained by a worker, so he can watch the earth's blood shooting up in a geyser catch fire and cheer his good fortune. how much does hw know or suspect about daniel's motives once henry shows up? hw tries to warn him with the fire, a line drawn between them, and he sticks around to see what the aftermath will be, only running when daniel chases him. he must suspect that's why he's sent away, and when he's brought back henry is gone. but would he necessarily put the pieces together himself, that daniel is trading one supposed family member for another, just bolstering his image? it's fascinating how genuinely furious and unstable daniel gets when his family man image is threatened. it's not actually about hw of course, it is the IMAGE of it that he relies on - not how dare you tell me how to raise my son, but how dare you see through my painted disguise. anyway. so years and years on, and hw gets married. to someone who genuinely loves him it seems. and he goes to daniel and expresses that he still wants him in his life, but he doesn't want to be his business partner, he wants to be his son. he wants the truth that he thinks lies under the artifice. and he can't have it, he finds out, because it was never there. and he still acts like the prop, right, he's affecting the version of himself he thinks daniel wants to see, he's collected and calm and speaks kindly to him, even acquiesces and speaks out loud when it's demanded, and it doesn't! matter! because what he wants isn't there and was never there and you see that pain written so plainly on his face even though he barely twitches a muscle, and then that final catharsis comes: i thank god there is no part of you in me. he can sever that tie now, he can leave this empty mansion and this artifice behind and he can go live his life with people who care about him.

but he CAN'T!!!! he can't go live a good life can he!! because he's going to drill fucking OIL the corruption is IN him it's all down to the core, he was literally baptized in it, he's tied to it forever, there IS something of daniel in him, it ain't blood, it's OIL and it's never coming out!!!! GOD!!!!!!!!!

plot to an eli sunday fic i might or might not write depending on how many people are interested (it’ll be h my first fanfic as well!),,,

some vague little plot points i’d love to have,,, it’d be an eli sunday x reader (is danonation dead?)

the plot in my head is daniel plainview’s daughter who is his either

1. his by blood to explore how much easier he took to HW as a son even though later on he clearly saw some issue w taking care of a child that wasn’t “his” ?? like it was a gender thing ! HW is his pride and joy !

2. daniel is infertile and she’s a woman’s he was with’s child and now the woman either left or died (not sure) to explore HIS toxic masculinity in that manner. to be unable to have children as a man i think is always such an interesting thing ??

she loves HW though fuck making her have resentment towards a child. she can have it towards daniel though !

and i’d imagine she does a little more (manual) labor than most woman bc daniel probably needed the extra set of hands ?? sort of. not unlady like bc fuck that but by the standards then women might pity her for not having a “womanly presence” in her life and making her not be very wanted by men (men will fuck anything tbh so whatever but you know?

she attends church against daniel’s wishes bc it’s at least distracting her but she is so going just for eli lmao. i have a vision of her just staring at that man fr….
