Nifty 1000 (Classic Mac, collected by HyperCraft, 1995)

A Japanese CD-ROM collection of freeware and shareware programs downloaded from various forums and usergroups (the directory structure is sorted by download source). You can download it here (as Nifty1000.zip) or here.

To run it on modern systems, open this in-browser emulator, then when it's finished starting up, extract the .zip file you downloaded and drag the resulting .iso file onto the emulated desktop.

Note from second link: "This disc uses the image cataloguing app BILLETE (EX version) to present a browsable index of all included software. The image attached to each item is a screen grab of the related NIFTY-Serve listing."

HYPERCRAFT REFLECTION

Because I spend a lot of time over the past few years on Hypercraft, I have had a good amount of time to reflect on what the digital world means to me. I mostly see myself as a textile developer and physical designer, the digital world has felt foreign to me for a long time. 

The last few months I have committed myself fully to Hypercraft. I wanted to use Blender to create an environment because this adds a lot of depth to the project in my opinion. This was a really tough because I did not have any previous experience with this program. I thought myself the basics by using the internet and my intuition. The final environment I am quite proud of because it accurately reflects the ambience I was aiming for. I also did not have an avatar before so I also really wanted to create one, this made gives the garments more personality and an actual context. This was quite challenging to get right because the avatar has different proportions then a human body. I made it work and feel like this adds to the charisma of the overall project.

Although I am proud of the final results, I am unsure if I will use the tools in this way in the future. CLO is the tool I will probably use the most because it works well for toiling and getting a general idea of what the garments will look like. I did learn a lot, which makes me appreciate everything that digital designers do even more.

Print Process part 1: I didn’t really focused too much on print because at that time i was fixated on knit so I chose not to follow through with it. however I wanted to capture the emotion of love and the aesthetic of a virtual realm. So I traced over iridiscent and textured wool to recreate a pattern that looked like digital fire and terrain. Bizarre and warped

Because we are still very much in the concept phase, we had some speculations about the future fashion industry in class. Different kind of thoughts was shared. Some think we end up in communities within every community a designer which provides the community others think friends will help each other out by remaking, trading or favors and some think garments will be made in the future adaptable to the climate. I believe when it will be really necessary, trends will disappear and everyone will wear what they want to wear but all this clothing will be from the past. I think eventually there will be an end to the fast-fashion era and it will be vintage or remaking garments from the old and existing ones.  With the future in mind, we had to design garments from scratch. Together with Alexandra we designed pants that will be very protective for the future and will also be long-lasting. We made the design more with Alexandra’s concept in mind, her concept is all about living compact and protective. Also we added a pouch which travels easy, it also can serve as a pillow or blanket when you fold it open. Extra protection will be added for over the shoes so that the shoes will not wear out easily.

- Beyond manual making -

I love this name. It could be interpreted broadly, which makes its quality. It could be conceptual making; digital making; making things with your body, your feet (wtf); making things with your mind alone (Telekinesis); letting nature make things (animals, water, plants, air, fungi...); letting gravity make things. Not making things?
