Self-identified "curator" here. This is an interesting management-style lens to look through, particularly having stayed away from hypergrowth in my career.

If you're used to downloading and installing drivers (because Windows loses drivers every update)
If you're going into the WIndows registry to remove the spyware "features" Windows comes with after every update
If you're removing bloatware from your WIndows machine as soon as you get it and you never really stop
If most of the games you play are local/single player, and the online games you play with your friends you can play on console
If you are a game modder , a speedrunner, or an emulator and you are used to digging through undocumented configuration files
If you are a librarian and used to using a search engine with proper query formatting
Then Linux might be a good fit for you.
A good starting point is Ubuntu, or another Debian-based system. Ubuntu was meant to be beginner friendly, and Debian has an incredibly wide range of hardware compatibilities. Many systems that Windows claims are too old will be able to run some form of Debian. There are lots of other good Linux distributions, but if the plethora of choices seems overwhelming this is one place to start. As you mess around with them you'll learn what you do/don't like and why.
Do not pick up Linux if:
You @ staff on tumblr posts.
In Linux, you are the @ staff. You didn't pay for this, nobody is driving this ship, the people who contribute do so for beer and funsies. Everything is always a mess, and it's your mission to fix the things that matter to you.
Linux users run everything from Wikipedia to Archive of Our Own to the tumblr servers this post lives on. Armed with nothing more than the man pages, a four year old forum thread, and a bravado born of ignorance, you too can learn to craft your own perfect exomind.
Telling young zoomers to "just switch to linux" is nuts some of these ipad kids have never even heard of a cmd.exe or BIOS you're throwing them to the wolves
#sorry the philosophy crept in at the end there#but linux attracts a certain type of nerd#i got tired of paying money for a shitty ui#decided to stop paying money and use command line instead#there are days when i think it must be possible to pay to make my problems go away#and then i remember that those solutions only last about 3 years in the modern tech landscape#3 years of venture capital hypergrowth and then the enshittification starts

"Hey, I'm just leaving you this message because I've gotten that android you bought fixed, but I don't think the last owner was completely honest with you on this guy being a factory android. The body is really strong, but I think the AI was trained on a completely different dataset because..."
"Insufficient stimulation. Initiating Hypergrowth Protocol."
"Ah shit I gotta deal with that. If you don't touch his muscles often, he starts thinking he's not big enough. It's fascinating really, I've never seen an android generate synthetic muscle so fast. I'd let him go until he reaches his limit, but I'm not breaking my apartment for this. Anyway yeah, I don't think he's gonna be great for what you need, but if you don't want him I'll keep him. I would not mind having him around."

This is a really good layman's explanation of some of the business forces behind the Hollywood strikes. This is what I've been trying to explain to people every time someone asks me about it. With bonus extensive quoting of Adam Conover. This is my favorite quote from the article:
It’s a sticking point in the negotiations — actors and writers on streaming series want a better way to calculate the value of their work, given that the residuals they earn are so much lower than for network or cable shows. The studios have resisted. “The reason nobody really wants to open the books on this is because if Wall Street got a look,” one Hollywood insider told New York Magazine, “they’d have a collective stroke.”
#the business model doesn't work#but it can't be fixed on the backs of the workers#that's about all i can say about that

Comradery is a digital platform where creators can receive monthly payments from supporters, and optionally give those supporters exclusive access to posts and media.
What makes Comradery different is we are a worker cooperative democratically owned and controlled equally by all the creators in our organization (that means you!). Our philosophy is ‘one worker, one vote’, where each creator owns a non sellable share of the cooperative, participates in democratic decision making, governance, and day-to-day operation tasks.
Comradery’s structure is inspired by the democratic organization of rank-and-file led unions. Our goal is to be a resource and leadership opportunity to any creators, activists, and cooperative organizations who share our mission.
Comradery rejects the “hypergrowth” paradigm of the tech industry. Instead, we focus on sustainable growth that is guided by our community principles. Below are details on how our organization works. These details explore how you can be a part of Comradery as a creator and member-owner of our organization.

i don't think i've been getting (")objectively(") (whatever that means) worse, either .... i know i've been trying new things and studying and practicing, and i know my skills in some areas have strengthened. i am trying a lot of new things stylistically and obviously not nailing all of them on the first pass which is whatever ... so maybe it has to do with being outside of my comfort zone? giving myself more opportunities to "fail" than "succeed"? But even then some of the stuff i said in the last post should still be able to apply.
I think focusing on learning and trying to get better is probably contributing to my issues here but that is how i approach just about everything in life. Hypergrowth mindset. It works because i'm smart and capable and can figure out a lot of things but it does mean i have trouble accepting where i am or feeling compassion for previous, less-skilled selves and their failures. and it is just so baked into my approach to life and i enjoy it so much that idk if i can alter it. Idk maybe i'm making excuses.
in the end none of this really matters cuz like hell is any of it going to stop me from drawing. But it does matter because i hate hating my work. One day i guess maybe i'll get good enough that i'll stop hating my work. Or maybe i will just always think it's bad no matter how good i get.

In the words of Commander James Stephanie Fucking Sterling (son!), companies these days don't just want to make money. They want to make all the money. The tech industry's years of hypergrowth, takeover of the entertainment industry, and ethos of valuing market share over profits got it in their heads that, if you're not Conquering the World, you're a dinosaur to be left in the dust.
You can't even call it capitalism anymore. At least capitalists care about turning a profit. This is megalomania, an obsession with being the BIGGEST there is as an end in and of itself out of a belief that sheer size can create a reality distortion field around a company.
it's fucking me up how tv shows, movies, and even video games can't be "niche" content anymore

Why Every SaaS Business Needs a Professional SaaS Design Agency
Does success in the Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) sector hinge on whether you have a great SaaS design partner? Yes. In this article, we explain how great design fuels the most successful SaaS businesses.
SaaS Businesses in 2024
SaaS businesses grew considerably in 2022 and 2023
But they did so at a much slower rate than in the previous two years of pandemic-fueled hypergrowth
In 2024 the SaaS market is back on the hypergrowth trajectory
The main source of this growth? User spending:
Users spent approximately $208 billion on SaaS app subscriptions in 2023
That figure is expected to grow significantly in 2024
Sources: Apps Run The World, Forbes, Gartner
*Projected figures
Most of this revenue comes from businesses who use SaaS tools to optimize their operations and scale sales. According to Flexera’s 2024 State of the Cloud Report on SaaS spending:
17% of businesses report spending between $2.4 million - $6 million
17% spend between $6 million - $12 million
7% spend between $12 million and $24 million
6% are in the range of $24 million to $60 million
9% of businesses report spending over $60 million on SaaS annually
The SaaS B2B (business-to-business) sector is raking in a lot of revenue.
But, the SaaS B2C (business-to-consumer) sector isn’t far behind, especially in terms of recent growth:
The compound-annual-growth-rate (CAGR) of the B2C SaaS sector reached 6.3% in Q1 2024
This is double the growth seen in Q4 2023
It marks the best quarter for the B2C SaaS sector since Q1 2022
New sales activity in the B2C market has consistently increased since late 2023
There was a huge spike of 17.5% in subscription upgrades in February 2024 alone
This growth is promising for the B2B sector as increased consumer revenue often signals future growth in business revenue
In short – business and consumer spending are the two backbones of the global SaaS industry in 2024. Guess what both of these groups want from SaaS businesses – better experiences.
Selling SaaS: The Importance of SaaS User Experiences
A SaaS business’s success relies on acquiring and retaining users
While an amazing SaaS app will always attract curious customers – only great user experiences will make them stay and return
SaaS UX design is a discipline that focuses on ensuring that your SaaS app always delivers great user experiences
It ensures that every interaction users have with your SaaS app or its brand messaging across every platform and device – is optimized to impress
Investing in world-class SaaS design services is the best way for a SaaS business to achieve this level of perfection at serving users
What is Professional SaaS Design?
Professional SaaS design refers to the strategic, user-focused, and business-grade approach to designing SaaS apps
It covers both the SaaS app’s user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) elements
The goal of professional SaaS design services is to help businesses create SaaS products that can reliably attract and retain loyal subscriber bases
All the major businesses that rake in millions of dollars in monthly subscription fees invest in professional SaaS design. Their logic is simple:
A SaaS app that is professionally designed to deliver friction-free and enjoyable user experiences will attract and retain more users
A SaaS app that is not professionally designed will have way less chances of attracting and retaining users consistently
Why Every SaaS Business Needs Professional SaaS Design Services
Here’s what happens when a SaaS business invests in professional SaaS design services:
Holistic Project Management
SaaS design professionals handle everything - from visualizing the perfect interface to manually designing each micro-interaction to tracking post-launch app success
By ‘SaaS design professionals’ we mean seasoned experts in UX research, visual design, interaction design, prototyping, and more
Working with such professionals relieves clients of the burden of managing multiple vendors
A SaaS design professional’s design process begins with understanding user needs through in-depth UX research
It does not end until every user need is addressed and every business objective is met
Scalable, SaaS-Specific Design Expertise
SaaS design professionals have collectively created thousands of SaaS-specific UIs, layouts, navigation frameworks, etc.
This specialized expertise is crucial for creating experiences that resonate with seasoned SaaS users
SaaS design professionals fuel app growth by integrating the latest SaaS design trends like microinteractions or contextual onboarding
SaaS design professionals also know how to scale their design efforts as SaaS apps grow in user activation, retention, and revenue
They design systems that can handle increasing user bases without compromising performance
Creating Intuitive SaaS Interfaces
SaaS design professionals focus on creating intuitive interfaces that allow users to manage their accounts independently
This self-service capability that users get through clever design empowers them and makes them feel more loyal to the app
SaaS design professionals provide clear overviews of user subscriptions, including plan details and billing information on the app’s interface
Users can easily update subscription tiers or add/remove features as needed
These interfaces also enable quick access to user information, allowing customer support teams to assist clients efficiently
Design agencies also implement multiple communication channels, such as in-app notifications and email alerts
All of this keeps users always informed about important details like account changes, renewals, and important updates
This knowledge leads to trust and loyalty
Reduced Costs and Improved Business Efficiency
While hiring SaaS design professionals may involve higher upfront costs, the investment pays off in many ways in the long run
The investment is justified by faster time-to-market, delivering better user experiences, and staying ahead of the competition
Their expertise also helps businesses avoid costly mistakes and rework
It also leads to better resource allocation
Design pros share detailed reports on user activity, engagement, and subscription trends with clients
These routine insights inform product development, marketing strategies, and customer success initiatives
All of these factors combine to drastically improve SaaS business efficiency and ultimately reduce costs
Tailored Solutions for Enterprise Clients
Professional design agencies can accommodate complex requirements from enterprise clients
These requirements can range from designing custom role hierarchies in enterprise apps to integrating secure Single Sign-On (SSO) systems with project management apps
By giving clients the ability to flexibly control their apps’ features, designers help SaaS brands secure more lucrative business contracts
Support for Growth Departments
Many major SaaS companies have dedicated “growth departments”
These departments focus on boosting their SaaS app’s presence on different platforms
Professional SaaS design agencies collaborate with growth teams to help them achieve their goals
Here are some of the things SaaS design agencies do to help their clients grow their businesses:
Designing high-converting landing pages that clearly communicate the product's value proposition and drive signups
Developing engaging, SEO-optimized content like blogs, case studies, and product demos to attract and educate potential customers via the app’s official website
Creating visually appealing, on-brand ads and social media assets to boost the SaaS app's visibility
Crafting intuitive, personalized user interfaces that make it easy for users to discover new features
Designing in-app onboarding experiences that guide users to success
Developing targeted email and push notification designs to keep users informed
Conducting user research and testing to constantly identify friction points and optimize the signup and onboarding flows
Implementing A/B testing and personalization to deliver tailored experiences that maximize conversions
Designing self-service features like account management and subscription controls to reduce churn
Conclusion
A professional SaaS design agency will bring years of experience in creating profitable yet user-centric SaaS experiences to the table. Most SaaS businesses do not have this type of experience in-house. Investing in such experience by teaming up with an agency is probably the best decision a SaaS business can make.

The burnout behind the billions: Time for a reality check
The article highlights the growing mental health crisis in India's startup ecosystem, where founders and employees face immense pressure to meet high expectations, often at the expense of their well-being. The culture of pushing for hypergrowth, glorifying long work hours, and celebrating burnout is becoming prevalent, with 74% of Indian entrepreneurs experiencing significant stress and mental health issues being 2-3 times higher than the general population.
The author calls for a change in how success is defined in the startup world, urging investors, founders, and the broader ecosystem to prioritize mental health and sustainable practices over the current focus on extreme dedication. They emphasize that mental well-being is not a weakness but a crucial asset for long-term success.
Investors are encouraged to incorporate mental health as a key metric in evaluating founders, and entrepreneurs are reminded to set boundaries, prioritize self-care, and build support networks. The article advocates for a shift in narrative, where mental health discussions are normalized, and sustainable growth is celebrated.
The author concludes by highlighting their efforts to support mental health in their investment approach and warns that if this crisis is not addressed, India risks losing its brightest minds. The future of the innovation economy depends on valuing both capital and compassion.
The author is chairman and managing director of Apollo International Group and Apollo Supply Chain.

I read a blog post from a tech company exec who talked about how they were trying, very hard, to encourage a respectful workplace high trust environment employee integrity etc etc. They had an Unlimited PTO policy.
The company is in a hypergrowth phase, and has recently gone from 10 employees to 100+. They haven't gone public yet, but... like... if the company grows much bigger, or starts taking more funding from venture capital, they will quickly be at a point where "human decency" is no longer king of the roost. There will be abusers, and they will need ways of finding and removing them. Unions put paid time off into contracts because it was necessary. Because it wasn't safe to let office politics get involved with people's time on/off - it created a situation of abuse.
You can't legislate human integrity, unfortunately.
Do not fall for the trap (moreso for salary workers), also known as fto (flexible time off)
#as engineers this is frustrating#because we wish the law could create good behaviour#like guardrails on catwalks#unions help#more unions please
