They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. If that’s the case, then in the social media arena, there has been a lot of flattery going on in recent years, and there’s no end in sight.

Back in the old days, when Facebook was squaring off with Twitter, and MySpace had already been relegated to the dustbin of digital history, it was all about how long your posts could be. Twitter limited users to 140 characters, while Facebook allowed 420, although if you posted a Facebook Note, you could go long-form if you wanted to. Think blog or endless rant.

Images then became the cause du jour, with Facebook leading the fray. Twitter was so streamlined in its early days that third-party apps popped up to handle all of the things that Twitter couldn’t or wouldn’t, which basically meant photo sites that provided users a link to a pic, as well as schedulers. I once scheduled a tweet to happen while I was getting a colonoscopy, but that’s probably TMI. I just wanted to see how it worked. (It worked just fine, and I was just fine also.)

Instagram came along in 2010, with the focus on the image first and foremost. Native filters, most of which were terrible by today’s standards, became all the rage, and the square format photos (a throwback nod to Polaroid, of course) set the app apart from everyone else. Facebook, threatened by this upstart, did what any smart company would do: They bought it in 2012.

Twitter then launched Periscope, a stand-alone app that allowed users to go live with video posts. These had to be done in portrait—meaning vertical—mode, which was prescient of what would come to pass a few years later. Facebook quickly copied it, but allowed for landscape—meaning horizontal—videos as well as portrait.

Moving along, SnapChat became popular with its disappearing stories. Instagram responded by adding a me-too version. Then TikTok gained traction here with their short-form videos, which Instagram quickly copied as Reels. They were then rolled into Facebook as well. And just last July, Meta, parent company of Facebook and Instagram, launched Threads, their Twitter—I mean X—rival, at a time when many X copycats were landing in the App Store. Threads has been the one with the most staying power, though.

But as much as TikTok has been in the headlines lately, it is Instagram with its two billion users, roughly 2X what TikTok has, that makes it the gold standard these days with all manner of imagery, from stills to stories to reels. They’ve got it going on.

And now comes rumors that TikTok is about to launch TikTok Notes, an odd name for a photo-intensive app that is designed to take on Instagram’s original intent. Never mind that TikTok’s future in the US is completely up in the air for now (and certainly dead in the water for state employees in 34 states). TikTok plans to duplicate posts from its users adding still photos, populating the new Notes app with initial content, and then hopes that it becomes a parallel channel for engagement.

Remember at this point that Instagram has managed to do it all in one, even though there has been much uproar over its algorithm deprecating still photos in favor of Reels. I felt that pain in the last year, because I prefer to focus my posts on stills. I neither have time nor interest in shooting lots of videos, as well as posting something less than polished.

So here we are now, with the looming possibility of yet another app and yet another time suck. I currently maintain steady streams on my Facebook, Insta, and Threads, and occasionally have dabbled in LinkedIn. But I have been terrible trying to keep my LinkedIn going, because I still see it as the site you use when you’re looking for a job. I’m not. I just don’t have enough bandwidth right now for a fourth app to maintain, much less even entertaining TikTok and its spawns.

At best, all this me-tooism is finding us slicing the pie into ever smaller pieces. That’s OK as long as you can find your tribe and have fun doing it, and the sites can make money. Furthermore, it helps bolster arguments against monopoly power that have been hurled at Meta. No, competition is still alive and well. It’s just I can’t contemplate too many competing platforms at the same time.

Besides, I would probably run out of photos and words to post.

“I feel like its lame, but here.” He showed the two a few photos to get the idea across.

They worked for a few hours, putting lights up, getting blankets and pillows laid down and just getting everything put together like Kuroo had imagined.

“Wow, it's really coming together guys!” Kuroo said excitedly.

“Do you know when Bokuto and Tsukishima are supposed to get here?” Lev asked.

Just as that was said, the two poked their heads in. “What was that about us?” Bokuto asked with a bright smile as he walked over and slung his arm around Kuroos shoulder.

“Nothing interesting, but that’s kinda hard to do about you anyway.” Kuroo nudged with a teasing smile.

“Ah- I'll have you know I'm the most interesting one of us here,” Bo said with a huff and crossed his arms.

“Sure you are.”

Everyone laughed and shook their heads at the twos banter while Bo just rolled his eyes and ignored Kuroo for a few minutes until he forgot about the incident.

It all seemed to be going smoothly. Bo and Tsuki brought a screen and projector to add to the setup. Everything looked perfect and just how Kuroo had imagined.

Since everything was ready to go, the group decided to go get a small meal together. The walk was nice and refreshing. It was nice to be able to really talk to Bo and Tsuki, catching up on everything going on in their lives.

As they were all sitting in the small café, a familiar face walked through the door. Lev and Tsuki were the two that saw him and they tried to discreetly hide and not be seen.

“What are you two doing? You look insane,” Kuroo said with a confused look.

“A wild y/n just walked through the door.”

“Oh shit- umm... just stay calm and try to act normal. Maybe he won't see us and just leave?”

“Yeah, I don’t think that’s going to work.”

Ah, a nice refreshing boba and a sandwich sound so good right now. The past few days have been weird to say the least. Everyone had been just sort of weird...? Honestly, I don’t know what Kuroo has planned, but I can only assume it’ll be... something.

I ordered my drink and sandwich on auto pilot, lost in my head. Once I got my order, I turned to look for an empty table I could yoink.

Across the room sat all of my friends in the corner booth. My head spun with confusion and hurt. What are they all doing here? Why wasn't I invited?

Bo had been avoiding me all day and wouldn’t even talk to me at practice this morning. What if this thing Kuroo wanted to talk to me about was the fact that they all hate me now and don’t what to be friends with me any- No, stop thinking like that, y/n. Just go over there and ask them. It's not that hard of an issue to figure out.

I shrugged off my thoughts from a second ago and walked to the corner they were in. “Hey guys, what are you all doing here?” I shot them a confused smile as I leaned against Kuroo and looked at him, trying not to think too hard about why I hadn't been invited.

“O-oh! Hi y/n,” Kuroo stuttered out. It was clear he was nervous about something.

“Uh hi?” I raised an eyebrow at him. “Am I intruding on something?”

“No, not at all!” Bo yelled excitedly, making us all flinch.

“Well in that case do you mind if I join you guys? But if you were getting ready to leave or anything, no need to feel pressured. You guys are obviously up to something.”

“Nono, we just got here a few minutes ago. Please feel free to sit,” he said patting his lap with a smirk plastered onto his pretty face.

I rolled my eyes and pushed him over, sitting on the end next to him. “In your dreams, kitten.” The nickname slipped passed my lips with ease and before I even knew what I had said, everyone was looking at the two of us like:  

I glanced up at them after taking a bite of my sandwich. “What’s with the staring, geez. If you guys need me to leave your little secret meeting I can, but just stop looking at me like that,” I said as my forehead crinkled in confusion. I glanced at Kuroo to see him blushing a crimson red.

I thought back over the last minute, trying to pinpoint what happened. Realization struck and I burst out laughing. “Oh, this is about your nickname,” I snickered. “I didn’t even realize I said it, but I also thought I had said it around all of you guys already.” I looked out them and we all laughed.

From there forward, it was smooth sailing. Conversation flowed smoothly and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves.

I glanced down at my watch and sighed. “Hate to leave you guys so soon, but I have a couple meetings I have to call into from home.” I frowned and started to stand up. “Oh hey, Kuroo, so this “surprise” at the park tonight. What time are you thinking? I'm afraid I won't be free for quite a while with these status report meetings. It might be late before I can meet up. Is that okay?”

“Oh yeah, that’s perfect actually. Just call or text me when you’re on your way.” He smiled and gave my hand a little squeeze before I stood up.

I smiled back at him and ruffled his hair as I said my goodbyes and headed out.

Geez, it's been a long day already and I bet it's only going to get worse. I sighed and walked home. The sky was bright, without a single cloud accenting the vibrant shade of blue.

Everyone seemed to relax more once y/n left. The relentless teasing about his nickname and interactions with y/n made him blush a bright red once again.

“You’re so soft for him- it's kinda sickening honestly,” Kenma complained.

“Y/n almost never gives me head pats anymore,” Bo whined.

“Yeah, I think it's pretty clear that you won't have any trouble sealing the deal tonight,” Tsuki said.

“Who really knows? Y/n is an affectionate person and it's hard to really pinpoint what he thinks about you. He’s too good at hiding his emotions towards people,” Bo said as he sipped his drink.

“I’ll never know if I don’t ask, right?” Kuroo said with a smile as he stood up and started cleaning up the table.

“I agree. I'm only saying don’t assume anything too fast or you’ll just end up getting yourself hurt.”

Kuroo nods and after getting everything cleaned up, the group heads out and goes to the store before splitting up and heading in their separate directions.

Girlfriend??? It rang in your ears.

“Pardon, what?” You tried to compose yourself as lump formed in your throat.

“We have been dating for two months now. Well, he doesn’t want to label it just yet nor to go public about it, but I feel he wants more.” She smiled and looked around. That didn’t sound like Ben.

“Oh, really?” Your voice cracked. Were you too late? Thousand thoughts were running through your mind at the moment. You looked around as tears gathered in your eyes, but you didn’t let them fall.

“Yes. He’s really amazing man… He told me a lot about you.” Nina said the last part with distaste while putting her bag on the living rooms sofa and taking a look around the room.

“He did mention that you might swing around sometime.” Nina said while she checked the photos on the wall. Some polaroids and printed pictures with friends, family, his dog and even you.

“And..?” you asked, feeling that something was coming.

“Nothing. When are you leaving?” Nina turned to you with serious look on her face.

“Tomorrow. Why?” You asked, carefully assessing her. Feeling that you might need to go back to the dorms.

“No reason. Don’t you have like dorms to go and studies to do? Homework? Something?” Nina asked. You could feel that she was not the friendliest type of people.

“I have enough time to do those.” You crossed your arms. Trying to calm down.

“Ben gave you a spare key?” You asked nodding towards the door.

“I wondered the same thing. Of course, he did.” Nina said looking you up and down. The fact that Ben had given you his spare key made you felt special, but not anymore as it seemed.

“I’m here to surprise him when he comes here tomorrow. Show me where is his room.” Nina said looking pass you.

“I’ll better show you guest room.” You said with distaste.

“So, you can take his?” Nina scoffed.

“So, you don’t make mess before he arrives.” You could bite too if you wanted to. And sofa in the living room didn’t look too bad.

“I would advise to watch your tongue before I call him and ask you to leave.” Nina said as she went in the guest room you had showed her.

“Sure. You do that.” You mumbled so she couldn’t hear.

Rest of the evening was silent between you two. She seemed like really possessive person. And jealous of you. She had occupied the guest room as her closet and migrated to Ben’s room to watch TV. You were sure she was planning on staying in both rooms. With slight roll of your eyes you reached under one of the sofas and pulled out a blanket and a pillow. Slipping on Ben’s sweater over your head you nestled on one of the sofas. Too lazy to push the glass coffee table out of the way and pull out the sofa, you tried to fall asleep. 

But the only thoughts that filled your mind where those of Ben and all the good time you two had shared. You stared at the ceiling, hoping that your mind would stop running in circles. Tucking the blanket around your chest you reached for your phone. Checking your IG, your dating apps that you hardly used and only usually checked when you were drunk. And you scrolled through your messages. Your group chat Booty Hunters 69/420 with Maddie and Rose seemed appropriate.

y/n: You guys up?

mAdDie: What happened?

y/n: Ben has gf…

mAdDie: WHAT

After that you didn’t answer the texts, just let them roll in and shush your friends that you’ll somehow manage. Then you scrolled list and looked at Ben’s contact. Tapping on his name you let your fingers hover over the keyboard. This wasn’t the first time you had been staring at his contact like this. Letting your fingers slide across the screen you started typing.

y/n: im sorry if this wakes you up. But its 1:34 here and all I can think about is you…

You glanced at the text and instead of hitting send, you deleted it, and throwing your phone on the ground, went to bed.

You woke up some time later from someone’s whispers and shuffling near the front door. You quietly sat up, still covered by blanket and glanced behind the sofa to make sure that it wasn’t Nina walking around, but both bedroom doors were closed.

“Shhh… You’re going to wake up Nina, Frankie…” you heard a deep voice whisper near the door. Then the small lamp near the front door lit up. Emitting small glow around the door area. You fucking knew that voice everywhere.

“Ben?” you asked, your voice still full with sleep. He wasn’t supposed to be here until tomorrow afternoon. Did you accidentally hit send to that message?

Upon hearing your voice, Ben froze.

“Y/n?” your name escaped him in a small gasp.

“Am I dreaming?” you mumbled to yourself as you rubbed your eyes.

“Why are you…? If I had known… You’re not dreaming. Hello.” He seemed puzzled but then softly greeted you, stepping closer. You furrowed your brows for a second, munching on what he said. Shit, it was him!

“Ben!” You gasped, jumping off the sofa and sprinting to him, just to crush your body to his.

“I fucking missed you!” you mumbled as your hands wrapped around him.

“Missed you too, sweetheart.” Ben said fondly as his hands went around your waist and picked you up from the ground to capture you in bone crushing hug. For a moment both of you enjoyed each other’s closeness. Stealing that feeling of home that you associated with each.

He gently let go of you and in that moment, Ben realised that you weren’t fully decent. You were only wearing panties and sweater. Without a bra. HIS sweater. Looking you up and down, he tilted his head while biting his lip:

“Lovely number you have going on here.” He grinned.

“What?” you looked down at yourself.

“Shit! Fuck!” you rushed to your bag to grab some shorts.

“Relax. And besides, it looks better on you anyways.” Ben was referencing the sweater and chuckled at your frantic movements. So, he totally knew it was his sweater. Cool.

“Someone wants to meet you, y/n.” Ben said when he heard small whine behind himself. He had finally taken his pup with him. And you were too excited to finally meet the beagle girl he talked so much about.

“She’s here with you?” You smiled like child.

“Of course.” He turned around and urged Frankie to come closer to you.

“Oh, god! She’s so lovely!” you couldn’t stop laughing as the pup gave you kisses.

“Look, she likes you.” Ben smiled and kneeled beside you two.

“What the fuck is going on here?” Both of you heard tired voice from the hall.

“Nina.” Ben was up and looking at her. If you were allowed to guess then you would say that he didn’t seem so thrilled to see her here.

“Boo? You are here?” Nina’s voice turned into unnatural squeak.

“Hey, Nina.” Ben smiled at her as the named girl rushed to hug him and give him kiss on the lips. Awkwardly clearing his throat, Ben pulled away from her.

“It seems you two have already met.” He said looking from Nina to you, but letting his eyes stay on you.

“Yeah, she’s a nice girl. And it seems you have brought your little pet too.” Nina said with smile, looking at Frankie who was excitedly wiggling her tail next to you.

“Yeah, I know you’re not a fan of Franksta here, but I couldn’t leave her behind.” Ben said apologetically.

“Nonsense. It’s alright until she sleeps in different room.” Nina smiled at him and laid her head on his shoulder. With small nod he agreed.

“Come to bed, boo. You must be tired.” Nina pulled on his arm.

“Yeah, yeah, I’ll be there in a second.” He kissed her cheek.

“Don’t make me wait.” Nina winked at him and went down the hall.

“Sorry about that.” Ben shuffled awkwardly.

“It’s alright.” You smiled and looked down at Frankie. Still trying to process the fact that he had a girlfriend now. You had no idea how to bring this up. What do you even do in such situation?

“Why are you sleeping here in the living room, I have a perfect guest bedroom that you have never turned down before.” He gestured to the back.

“That’s Nina’s.” You said and petted the pup.

“You know you could just sleep in mine then.” He leaned back against the back of the sofa.

“That’s Nina’s too now.” You said straightening. Ben furrowed his eyebrows.

“Guest room sort of is her walk-in closet now. And I think she sleeps in yours.” You shrugged explaining.

“You could have just said something to her.” He smiled.

“I don’t think that she’s a fan of me either.” You sighed, looking at Frankie with whom you now had something in common.

“Don’t be silly.” Ben’s smile faltered.

“It’s alright, Ben. Your expensive sofas are enough.” You reassured, patting his shoulder.

“I think there might be a horny girlfriend that waits for you.” You tried to joke and not sound hurt. For you it hurt more than it made you laugh.

“Don’t even start. I rather stay with you here that deal with that.” Ben said and walked around the sofa to sit.

“Tired, huh?” You whispered.

“Jetlagged as hell.” He corrected.

“Ben?!” Both of you heard Nina’s voice from bedroom. With roll of his eyes, Ben sighed. You rested your forearms on the back of the sofa and looked at Ben. You quietly admired how he looked even if he was jetlagged. His messy hair, the dark hoodie, the way he sat with resting his elbows on his knees.

“How did- How did you meet—You know, the girlfriend Nina thing...?” You somehow tried to word it, but it only came out as weak whisper. You leaned down, now resting your chin on the sofa’s back.

“At one dinner after shooting. Somehow, she stuck around.” Ben sighed and leaned back, his head laying close to yours as his eyes bore into the ceiling, just like yours couple hours earlier.

“What about it?” He asked turning his head to look at you. His breath hitting your cheek now. You didn’t answer, feeling that your voice would give away how you truly feel, so you only shook your head.

“There’s something wrong.” Ben said as his eyes flickered around the side of your face.

“Is there?” You tried to sound uninterested.

“Yeah.” Ben sat up straight and turned to you.

“Don’t want to talk about it.” You said and walked around the sofa to pet Frankie and distract yourself.

“Is it about Nina? Because I know-” Ben started, but you interrupted him with a hiss:

“I said I don’t want to talk about it! Not now, please.” At the end you seemed almost desperate. With small nod, Ben didn’t say a word.

 “Can I leave Frankie here with you?” He pinched the bridge of his nose.

“Of course.” You scooped the pup in your arms. The dog nuzzled the sweater with her nose.

“Even she knows it’s my sweater.” Ben chuckled, trying to lighten up the mood.

“Sorry, I’ll give it back.” You apologized.

“Nah, keep it.” He stepped closer and pulled the collar of the sweater on your nose.

“Goodnight, y/n.” Ben said with tired smiled. He leaned down and pressed his lips to Frankie’s head, keeping his eyes locked with yours.

“Be good.” He said to his dog and left you there with his sweater over your nose and his dog in your arms. Only now you realised how much the sweater smelled of him.

“Goodnight, Ben…” You whispered and readied to the bed again. Mentally saying to yourself to get to sleep because he wasn’t even thinking about you.

A Second Chance

“I would’ve dropped  you off at Neil’s, but he’s been trying my patience lately. So why bother? I am sure someone will come pick you up eventually.” Alice smiled coldly as she watched formerly half-of Maso take his first shaky steps out of the grimdark Office. The body she had salvaged from another unfortunate Stellan - one whose soul had been reincarnated after his young demise – had been patched up and handed down.

"And remember! If you ever come back to cuase trouble in the grimdark Office again, your death will be an exceptionally long and painful one!" Alice chirped, her fingernails digging into Stellan's shoulder painfully. He jerked back, wincing, and averted his eyes.  

“Perfect! I am glad we understand each other. Now, off you go, shoo!”

Stellan turned down the hallway. It was unfamiliar, looked like every other Office they’ve been to. With a sinking heart, he remembered he wouldn’t have Bradley here to guide him. He wished he would’ve paid more attention to their previous travels.

However, the things out there were most likely much better than what he was leaving behind. He felt Alice’s gaze linger a few seconds longer as he limped away, before she vanished back in her Office.

And then Stellan was alone.

His new body ached and stung from the stitches Jagger had put in after it had been rescued from a grave. Its eyes felt weak and its feet clumsily stumbled over each other. Either they had given him a second rate body to sit in, or he had to get used to having a body on his own for the first time in years.

It was ironic, actually. Stellan had dreamed of owning a very own body for himself on many occaisons, one where he could do what he want and go wherever, with no one else there to tell him what to do. Now he just felt cold and empty. He wished Bradley were here to fill the silence. When he reached out for that presence at the forefront of his mind, he felt nothing but hollow numbness, like tonguing a missing tooth.

Finally free and Stellan was fucking miserable.

He made his way down the hallways, taking random turns in whatever direction felt like it could lead him somewhere better. The Lounge sat empty, its seats covered in thick dust and the vending machine leaking with unidentifiable fluids. Not an abnormal sight to see, if rare, but some Offices shut down after their Stanleys and Narrators leave, or are killed, or kidnapped, or fall in love and move to another one, abandoning their original Offices.

It felt like the Universe took great joy in mocking Stellan, reminding him of how utterly alone he was. For the first time in years, he wanted to find a bottle that smelled as strongly as the juices drenching the Lounge’s carpets and drink it until he forgot everything but the burning in his throat. He had curbed his alcoholism nearly a decade prior, dreaming without it he could hold a good job, pull himself out of the mess his life had become and afford starting again in a better community.

Ever since he took the first step for change, accepting an office job promising to uphold a decent lifestyle, things haven’t stopped spiraling downwards.

‘Maybe I should’ve stayed a drunkard,’ Stellan thought bitterly as he focused on placing a foot in front of the other. Both the pain and the fogginess in his mind made it difficult to walk straight.

‘Ending up with liver poison and a friendly face per night would’ve been a much better fate. Hell, I could’ve met someone nice and spent an average life with them. But noo, I had to become a better person and start dreaming. And look where that got me.’

So wrapped up in his self loathing, Stellan didn’t notice another Stanley standing in the middle of the hallway until he nearly ran straight into him. In a flash, his thoughts had vanished and he couldn’t help stare.

The other Stanley...looked normal enough. He had the typical brown hair parted in the middle and messy with a morning look, warm brown eyes, and freckles scattered playfully on his nose. His employee outfit clean and nicely ironed; the nametag which read 'Hi! My name is Stanley!' looked new.

He looked normal but he didnt feel normal. This Office was abandoned, no doubt, so where had he come from? If he were a new Stanley, surely he would be frightened with the change of scenery and lack of directions.

Yet he simply stood there and smiled at Stellan, like they had agreed to meet up and Stanley was happy he came.

"Uhh?" Stellan tried and his vocal cords cringed at the unaccustomed strain. He coughed awkwardly and tried again, this time managing a hoarse mutter.

“H-hey, can you help me? I think I’m lost.”

"Of course I can help!" The Stanley said, his voice surprisingly gentle. He offered his hand for Stellan to take. "Come with me, I can take you somewhere safe!"

His eyes gleamed brightly in the dim hallway and for a moment Stellan wondered if he had stumbled upon another illusion of a Jonathan. Maybe it had been abandoned after the Narrator left and was never taken care of. But when Stellan hesitantly took his hand, it was warm and human to the touch. Not even Jonathan could imagine an illusion that felt so real.

The other Stanley beamed with joy and Stellan glanced away.

The Office looked even worse than Stellan had expected. Beyond the Lounge, as they headed back towards room 427, he noticed some rooms had their ceilings caved in, others with windows shattered. The left door was blocked completely with some filing cabinets but his mysterious guide didn't bat an eye at the havoc.

They turned into another hallway past room 420, and headed deeper. Stellan gave up trying to make sense of where they are going so he focused on the warm hand clutching his. It felt so foreign to be holding it and comforting at the same time.

“You’ve got a long journey behind you, don’t you?” The other Stanley said, sometime after they passed through another portal finally, into another Office. It smelled warm like a heated kitchen and no matter how hard Stellan looked, he couldnt find even one piece of stray paper on the ground.

“You dont know the half of it,” Stellan muttered. He tried to focus on walking, grateful for the hand clutching his. Without it he would’ve surely tripped over his own feet.

“I think I might,” Stanley said, smiling. Stellan shot him a questioning look, but he didn’t offer to elaborate.

“...did someone send you to get me?”

“This way.”

It’s been barely an hour, they couldn’t have known the exact moment I was released, could they?

Whoever they were. Countless of people around the Offices stuck their nosy noses in other people’s business. Stellan could name ten on the top of his head who may have had even the abandoned Offices bugged, grimdarks and the laboratories of one certain evil Narrator included.

Maybe it was desperation talking, or his inability to care about what pain could be further induced on him at this point, emotional or physical. But the other Stanley didnt feel evil. Even if he was mysterious, came out of nowhere and now held a tight grip to his hand as they wandered further into the hallway’s mazes.

If he wanted to hurt Stellan, he could have done it by now.

Unless he is taking you back to the laboratories, a tiny voice quipped.

I’m useless now. Bradley has the body, not me.

You’re not useless. Their whole experiments were centered around pain, werent they? Maybe they’re trying to see how far they can break you.

… then let them. I don’t give a shit anymore, and if they want to fuse me with more Bradleys. I’m tired. I don’t care.

Stanley stopped suddenly in front of a door. He turned back to Stellan and, while he never stopped smiling, it brightened when he looked at him.

“In here.” Stanley said.

“What…?” Stellan glanced at the door. “What’s in there?”

“Oh, didnt I already say? It’s a second chance for both of you.”

Both? Stellan stared in bewilderment and got a knowing smile as an answer.

Wait...

“...Bradley….Bradley is in there too?” How did he get past Alice and her security and her monsters to get him out? She was very clear in what she wanted to do with his other half and how she would maim anyone who tried to free Bradley of his ‘punishment’. Even if the ‘good guys’ wanted to save Bradley, it wouldnt make any sense. Stellan’s own alternate, one of those self proclaimed Office Heroes, even he took part in their capture.

“Life is more than hurting and getting hurt.” The other Stanley continued, infuriatingly vague. “We all have done things we regret, but it doesnt mean we need to suffer for the rest of our lives for it.”

He reached out and cupped his hands around Stellan’s face, and Stel startled at how warm they were. Ever snce Maso – no. Ever since the Office, the hands touching him had been cruel, painful. Cold fingers of scientists prodding, Jagger and his scalpels, agony created by Alice and his very own hands. And yet Stanley’s were so gentle, soft and merciful. Stellan leaned into the touch unconsciously.

His chest stung with an unwanted tightness.

“You’re going to be okay.” The Stanley said. “You and him. I promise.”

Stel was tempted to bite back with sarcasm, but it felt ungrateful to spoil his optimism with bitterness. Instead he hung his head, ashamed.

“We dont deserve a second chance,” he muttered. The hands withdrew from his face and even in the surprisingly warm Office air, Stel felt colder. He waited, but no reply came and when he looked  up again, the hallway was empty.

The other Stanley had vanished.

Stellan sighed and turned back to the door. It looked so simple a few minutes ago and now it seemed more daunting, at the thought of seeing him again. Bradley might blame him for leaving him alone, but Stellan was more afraid he wouldn’t hesitate a second if Bradley offered him a chance to come back.

Anything was better than suffering alone. At least Bradley understood him.

Stellan gathered up his nerves and reached out for the door handle. It stuck, forcing him to rattle it a few times before he managed to get it open. His heart beat hard in his throat.

A single desk lamp struggled to light the room, though its glow couldn't reach past the cramped corner in which the cot sat. On the cot, wrapped in a few dozens blankets crouched a figure. Stellan couldn't make out its features so he hesitantly tried a,

"Bradley?"

The figure shuddered. As Stellan took another careful step inside, letting the door swing shut behind him, it shifted and a tired, tear stricken face peered out from underneath the sheets.

Stellan froze and he could feel his heart sink to his stomach.

That wasn’t his Bradley.

When's the last time you ran? I don’t know, I usually walk-run but I don’t fully run. The last time I did the former was last Wednesday when I was horribly late for my anthropology class. Not until after 4:17 – which was the last time he glanced over at Seb’s clock. Nerves for the Quidditch game later this afternoon as well as for his Charms test kept him awake. In an attempt to make himself fall asleep, he tried counting the stars above his bunk.

When a day starts off bad, it’s sort of hard to recover from.

Minho slept through breakfast as well as the first fifteen minutes of Transfiguration. When he woke to an empty dorm room, he glanced over at Seb’s alarm clock. 8:45

“Oh, crap!” He scrambled out of bed, bleary-eyed and panicked, and rushed over to the dresser to change into his uniform. In his hurry, it took him a while to find his things, and his hands trembled as he pulled on his socks.

Of course he would sleep in today…

He knew why he woke up late; he couldn’t fall asleep last night. Not until after 4:17 – which was the last time he glanced over at Seb’s clock. Nerves for the Quidditch game later this afternoon as well as for his Charms test kept him awake. In an attempt to make himself fall asleep, he tried counting the stars above his bunk.

It didn’t work.

Grabbing his heavy backpack, Minho slung it over his shoulder and ran out the door. The common room was painfully quiet as he shuffled across the hardwood floor on his socked feet. Once his shoes were on, he was out the door and on his way to the ground floor.

The door to Classroom 1 was propped open, so Minho sat down beside the doorway. He leaned back against the wall as he listened to Professor Crowell continue her lesson from yesterday on the theory of transfiguring living creatures to inanimate objects. He dug through his backpack and, after a moment, he sighed heavily. Last night, he had forgotten to exchange his afternoon-class books for his morning-class textbooks.

At least Kibum was in there right now, taking good notes to share with him, as usual.

Minho hugged his backpack and rested his chin on the top, waiting as patiently as he could for Transfiguration to finish. He jumped to his feet when the bell rang and he stepped away from the doorway, leaning forward to watch for Kibum. The students flooded out of the classroom, most smiling or greeting Minho as they passed by. When Kibum appeared, he found Minho instantly and surged through the other students to reach him.

“Are you okay? Where were you?”

“I over-slept.”

Kibum’s brow furrowed when the second bell rang and he glanced over at the Slytherins making their way up to Charms. “I’ll see you after lunch before the game, okay?” Minho nodded and Kibum ran off, catching up to Analecia before she started to climb the stairs.

Once Kibum was out of sight, Minho trudged back downstairs. It was Friday, which unfortunately meant that there was no Defense Against the Dark Arts class. He followed some of the other Hufflepuffs as they returned to the common room, and he quickly exchanged the books in his backpack before he went back upstairs and headed outside.

Birds were singing and chirping as Minho meandered through the greenhouses. The sky was bright, blue, and clear – not a cloud in sight. Good news for the game later this afternoon. He plopped his backpack in the dirt by Greenhouse 3 and crossed his legs as he sat.

There was a nice, cool breeze sweeping through the gardens, tousling Minho’s hair. He leaned back against one of the walls as he started to pull weeds, making a little pile beside his knee. As time passed, other students – Hufflepuffs and Gryffindors alike – soon started to cluster in the garden as they waited for their Herbology lesson.

Three pairs of shoes appeared on the cobblestone path in Minho’s line of sight, and he sighed as they sat down.

“Hey, buddy,” Damien said, a hint of a smile in his voice. “What’s up?” Minho just shrugged without looking up. Maybe Damien would go away if he didn’t respond. He clapped his hand on Minho’s shoulder. “Good luck on the game today. Ravenclaw is a good team.”

Minho glanced up, looking from Nick to Jared and finally to Damien. “Thanks.”

“One thing,” Jared said, his head cocking to the side. “You are aware that, as the Seeker, you’re supposed to catch the Snitch, right?”

“Like, that’s your one job,” Nick said, adding a couple of tiny weeds to Minho’s growing pile.

Taking a deep breath, Minho looked back down at the dirt. “I know.”

The three Gryffindors let out relieved chuckles, Damien patting Minho’s shoulder again. “I wasn’t sure if you understood because like, you haven’t caught one yet, so – “

Minho scooted away, out of Damien’s reach. “No, I know.”

“Okay, good.”

They talked amongst themselves then, their chatter getting louder when a couple of Gryffindor girls sat on either side of them. Minho heaved a heavy sigh and looked around for his dormmates. By the time he spotted them – Travis was trying to climb one of the apple trees while Marvin and Gilbert were pulling him off – Professor Sprout opened the door to Greenhouse 3.

“Come on inside, everyone!”

Minho brushed off the seat of his pants and the dirt off his robe as he hurried inside after the others. Everyone was going to their usual spots, but Minho stopped in his tracks when he found Chelsea in his seat. He usually sat by Amber, Chelsea’s best friend, so it made sense that she would want that spot.

She gave him an apologetic look and he smiled and shook his head. His smile fell, however, when he saw that the only open spot left around the table was between Nick and Damien.

Reluctantly, he hooked his backpack over the back of his chair and sat down.

“Take out your book, and turn to page 420.” There were a couple of giggles far down the table, but they were silenced when Sprout looked up. “We’re revisiting the Venomous Tentacula today and discussing how it can be easily disarmed.” Minho looked up from his textbook when he found the page, making eye contact with Professor Sprout. “Minho, if you would start the reading.” His chair creaked as he stood. “From the third paragraph, please.”

He found his place with a trembling finger. “The…the Tentacula is known for its a…appen…a – ”

“Appendage,” Sprout said, and Minho nodded, flinching when Damien snickered quietly beside him.

“ – appendage-like vines that are used to ensnare their prey.” He cringed at his lisp, willing it to disappear for until at least he was finished with this passage. “The thorns that cover the vines are filled with a…le…lethal venom that even the slightest prick can prove fatal within minutes, if not properly tended to.”

He took a deep breath in an attempt to calm his nerves before he continued. “Beware of coming too close to the Tentacula. Even if you don’t come close enough for the vines to latch onto you, the Tenacula is able to spray its venom from its shoots – “

“Thooths,” Nick whispered, and Damien snorted.

“Quiet,” Sprout said, her voice stern. Minho’s heart settled into his churning stomach when she said, “Continue, please, Minho.”

“ – from its…shoots…with a varying range. The, uh, the largest known Tentacula plant was three meters tall and had a five-meter reach with its longest vine. It was able to spray venom up to ten meters from its mouth.”

His bottom lip trembled as he tried to blink away the tears blurring the passage. They were just teasing him, he shouldn’t be affected by it. Kibum teased him all the time, after all, but it never made him feel bad about himself.

Minho tried to swallow away the knot in his throat. “Uh, when, uh, defending yourself from the Tentacula, e…especially if one has la…latched onto you, the best approach is to use the, um, the Severing Charm to dis…lodge it from your person.”

He paused, looking up at Sprout to see if she wanted him to stop yet or not. Of course not. “If one has latched onto you, stay completely still and say ‘Diffindo!’ The vine should fall away from the plant and un…unravel itself from you so you can make your escape.”

“Thank you, Minho. Elizabeth, if you’d pick up where Minho left off?”

Sighing, Minho returned to his seat, his eyes closing when Damien leaned forward to talk to Nick as Liz started to read. “You know what’d be helpful?” he whispered, and Nick hummed in question. “If Hogwarts had some sort of speech therapy.” Minho gulped, his gaze fixed on the illustration of the Venomous Tentacula. “I’ve heard its helpful to some people.”

“True.”

His parents had considered taking him to a speech therapist, specifically for his lisp, back in Korea. In the end, they decided it wasn’t worth the money, because it was sort of cute sometimes, according to his mother.

The rest of the lesson went by without Minho’s participation, or attention. Instead, he stared blankly at the page, turning it whenever he heard the others start to flip through their books. Herbology ended not soon enough, and Minho was out the door before anyone could stop him.

There was no History class today, because of the game after lunch, so everyone was on their way to the early lunch period. The indistinct chatter in the halls grated against his already frayed nerves, so Minho ducked into the stairwell and hurried back to his dorm room. Hopefully, he could find even the slightest bit of peace before the game.

In the Great Hall, Minho was nowhere to be seen. Even when the Quidditch team got up to go down to the pitch, Kibum couldn’t find Minho amongst them.

“Hey, have you guys seen Minho?” Kibum asked, looking across the table at Aaron and Analecia.

“Nope.”

“Anyways,” Callum said, clearing his throat, “like I was saying, that’s why I think the Ministry is connected to the Illuminati.”

“Interesting,” Aaron said, humming in thought. Analecia scoffed, and Kibum grabbed the other half of his sandwich, eating it slowly while he watched for any sort of sign of Minho on the other side of the Great Hall.

Once he was finished with his lunch, most of Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw were already on their way down to the game. He wiped this mouth free of crumbs with his sleeve and stood, heading to the door without waiting for the others to join him.

Once he reached the arena, he stopped by the Hufflepuff hallways, listening for the telltale music. It was faint, but there. They must be getting ready to go out to the pitch. Kibum jogged over to the stairwell leading up to the stands and took the steps two at a time, finding his and Minho’s usual spot free. Callum and Aaron joined him as the teams took to the field.

“Ready for this?” Aaron asked, his voice quiet against the loud cheering of the Hufflepuffs beside them.

“No.”

Hufflepuff had not won once this year. During the game against Slytherin, Christine, the Seeker, had found and caught the Snitch within the first minute of the game. Neither team had been able to even score. Minho refused to talk about Quidditch now, and he tended to flinch whenever someone brought it up around him. Kibum kept trying to tell him that their losing streak wasn’t his fault, but...

Just this morning after their Charms lesson, Kibum overheard a couple of the Ravenclaws saying that they had basically already won the game already since they were playing against Hufflepuff and their weak Seeker. Analecia had to physically drag him away from them before he did something he would regret.

Well, maybe not regret, but something he would get detention for.

Kibum was out of his seat when the players from both teams took to the air -- one hand cupped around his mouth as he cheered and the other waving at Minho. He couldn’t be sure, because of the distance, but it looked like Minho didn’t even glance his way. He stepped around his fellow students as he made his way to the banister.

“Go go, Choi Minho!” he yelled, both in English and then in Korean. Minho looked his way then, and Kibum waved, his smile falling when he didn’t return it.

Once the whistle blew, the game began.

One of the Ravenclaw Chasers caught straight away, but Kibum turned his attention away from the play and to Minho, who sat perched high above everyone else. Kibum held his hand up, shielding his eyes from the sun. His breath caught when Minho started to freefall -- or so it seemed -- but he was only getting out of the way of the Hufflepuff Beaters.

When the play moved away from him, he shot back up into the sky, this time flying around, no doubt scanning every centimeter for a flash of gold.

“You’ve got this, Choi,” he said under his breath.

Minho’s head twitched to look his way, and he started to dive toward the shared Hufflepuff and Slytherin stands. Kibum’s eyes widened when he came to an abrupt stop several meters away. He rubbed his eyes with one hand and shook his head, looking back out toward the pitch. Did he think he saw the Snitch? Kibum leaned over the banister and saw a golden streamer caught on one of the beams, the wind tossing it back and forth.

“Go, go, Choi Minho!” Kibum cheered, grinning when Minho glanced his way. He offered Kibum a small smile before returning his attention to the game.

A rousing cry erupted from the other side of the pitch, and Kibum looked up at the announcer’s stand when it was declared that Ravenclaw took the lead. He looked back up at Minho, who squared his shoulders. Kibum tensed as he darted away, swooping around the pitch to the opposite goal posts.

He stopped mid-flight when the Ravenclaw Seeker started to dive, and he followed her into the middle of the play. There it was, the slightest glimmer of gold flitting about the other players. Minho was closer to the Snitch than she was, maybe this would be it? Maybe he’d catch it? Maybe --

No...

It all happened so fast.

Minho was secure on his broom and then Kibum blinked. When he opened his eyes, Minho was falling to the grass below. Kibum’s breath caught and he froze as Madam Hooch ran out onto the field, her wand extended, slowing Minho’s fall.

The play stopped, and who Kibum assumed to be the Hufflepuff captain bolted over to catch him and lay him gently on the ground.

“I have to get down there...” Kibum turned to leave, but he was pressed in by the other students curious to see what happened. “Move!” He yelled, startling the group of girls behind him. “I have to go!”

Kibum pushed his way through the crowd and ran down the steps and to the Hufflepuff tunnel. His footsteps were loud in the empty hallway, and he stopped at the door, watching the mass of players on the pitch. Was he even allowed to go out there?

He stepped out of the way of two of the Hufflepuff players who were heading for the locker room. “Is he okay?” Kibum asked, his voice strained, as they ducked inside. They both reappeared, one of them carrying a small chest. “What happened?” The one with the chest ran back outside, ignoring Kibum, and the other stopped beside him.

“Quaffle...hit his head...” she said between breaths, patting Kibum’s back. “He’ll be...okay...don’t worry.”

Tears started welling up in Kibum’s eyes. “Can I see him?”

She took a deep breath. “Stay here. We’re gonna bring him in here to wait for Madam Pomfrey, okay?”

“O-o-okay.”

She patted his back again before she darted off toward the castle. Kibum sniffed and turned around to watch the slow progression of the Hufflepuff players across the pitch. He sniffed again, rubbing the tears from his eyes, and fidgeted with the sleeve of his robe while he waited. After what seemed like an eternity, they reached the hall and Kibum moved out of their way.

Minho was slumped against the captain of the team, who was guiding him and the rest of the team to the locker room. “Good, Kibum, you’re here,” he said as he passed. “Follow me.” Kibum trailed after the team, darting around them to stand at the captain’s side.

He had been placed on one of the many benches, his head leaning up against the wall. His eyes were half-closed, and he stared blankly at people in front of him. Kibum sat beside him on the bench, his arm instinctively wrapping around Minho’s waist to hold him steady. There was a bruise already purpling on his left temple. The captain said something, but Kibum hadn’t been focusing on him at all. He looked up when the captain tapped his shoulder.

“Can you watch over him for a minute? Make sure he doesn’t fall asleep or -- yes?” The captain turned when his name was called by someone -- Kibum wasn’t sure nor did he care who it was -- at the door.

“You’re okay, Min...You’re gonna be okay, alright?”

“Al...right,” he said, his whisper slightly slurred.

Kibum’s bottom lip trembled as he rubbed Minho’s side. “You were doing really good out there today.” Minho huffed and Kibum looked up, expecting a change in expression. Nope, still blank. “I know you won’t believe me but it’s true. You -- “

His thought was cut off by the appearance of Madam Pomfrey as she bustled into the locker room. Kibum sat as still as possible as she bent over Minho, inspecting his temple. The entire team crowded around behind her until she turned, the steel in her eyes chilling the blood in Kibum’s veins. They backed off then, and she held open Minho’s eyes one by one as she held her lit wand before them.

“Looks like a simple concussion,” she said after she finished her many little tests. “Tanner, if you’d help me get him back to the infirmary, I’d appreciate it." The captain nodded and moved to help Minho up off the bench. “Everyone else, stay here. We don’t want to overstimulate him.” The rest of the team stayed behind while Tanner and Minho followed Madam Pomfrey out of the locker room.  

Kibum watched the door long after they disappeared from the doorway, his stomach churning. The team changed out of their uniforms and cleaned the locker room up after themselves. Once they were finished, they crowded by the door and looked back at Kibum, who still had not moved. The girl from earlier nodded to the others, sending them on their way, and moved back into the room.

She took a seat on the bench opposite of Kibum. “So, you’re the Kibum, huh?”

“The?”

“Minho talks about you a lot.” Kibum took a deep breath in an attempt to stem the oncoming tears. “He’s gonna be okay, you know? Pomfrey knows what the fuck she’s doing, I wouldn’t worry too much, hon.” He nodded slowly, and she gave him a small smile. “I know saying that doesn’t really help you right now, but it’s true.”

“Okay,” he said, his voice watery.

“I’ve gotten hurt a bunch like that during practice and games, and she’s always fixed me right up. “

“Really?”

“Absolutely.” She glanced at the door before looking back at Kibum. “Wanna head back? We’ll be able to hear if he’s doing better soon.” Kibum gulped and shot off the bench. He had to hold himself back from running across the lawn.

The rest of the day both dragged on and flew by. He didn’t get word about Minho’s condition until Herbology, when Tanner came in to tell him that Minho was fine and that he could see him at dinner. Kibum had been distracting himself with extremely diligent note-taking until that moment, but after that, he couldn’t concentrate on a word anyone was saying. He just wanted to leave.

When dinner finally came, Minho was, once again, nowhere to be found. Unlike lunch, however, Kibum didn’t wait until the end of the meal to find out where he was. He was up and out of his seat, hurrying to the other end of the Great Hall to where Tanner was sitting. When he said he didn’t know where Minho was, Kibum ran to the infirmary, finding it empty, except for Madam Pomfrey, who was remaking a bed. She said that Minho was fine and that she had sent him on his way about an hour ago.

Kibum ran all the up the six flights of steps to the seventh floor, the study closet door appearing even though Minho wasn’t with him. He opened it, frowning. Dark and empty.

Where was Minho?

He took a couple of deep breaths before he ran back down the stairs to the basement, sliding to a stop in front of the Hufflepuff barrels. “Is he in there?” he asked when Gilbert came through the entrance. Gilbert just shook his head and Kibum frowned, looking down the hall.

Where the hell was Minho?

It hit him as he started trudging back to Slytherin. He couldn’t...not the Quidditch pitch...he would know better than that, right?

Groaning, Kibum went back up the stairs and crept down the darkened hallway, sneaking out of the castle. The sun was setting now, dusk was upon them, setting the sky ablaze with brilliant oranges and pinks. Ordinarily, he might have stopped to admire the sunset, but at the moment, he just really didn’t care.

As he walked down the hall, he heard faint sort-of grunts coming from the pitch. All his worry and stress that had been accumulating within him all day now manifested in a burst of anger. Kibum’s hands balled tightly at his sides as he stepped through the doorway, looking up to find Minho tossing walnuts for himself to catch.  It took a moment for him to notice Kibum, and when he did, his shoulders fell for a second before he tossed another golden walnut.

Once he caught it, he slowly flew down to where Kibum was. He offered Kibum a sheepish smile once he landed, and he pocketed the walnuts in his robe. “Hey, how ar -- hey!”

Kibum had snatched the broom out of Minho’s hand and held it out of his reach as he stumbled forward. “I can’t believe you...”

“Give it back!”

“No!”

“Open up.”

Minho blinked slowly, cringing at the pale sunlight. His head throbbed, and he squinted up at Madam Pomfrey. Between her fingers, she held a thin strip of something green. “What...what i...s that?”

“Aereveli leaf. It’ll help with your headache.”

“Oh.” Minho slowly opened his mouth, and Pomfrey lifted his tongue with a gloved finger and placed the leaf underneath. It had...a sort of citrus and minty taste to it. It was faint, but there.

“You got a concussion during the game. You’ll have a bad headache for a few days, but it should go away in about a week or so.” Minho barely nodded before he froze, pain spiking from his neck to his temple. “You’re going to need to take it easy for the next few days. No Quidditch.” He whined. “No. Quidditch. Until I say so, alright?”

“Okay.”

“I also want you to come see me again before you go to bed tonight, as well as in the morning to see how you’re doing.”

A chill ran over him, tingling up his spine and into his neck and spreading into his head. It, thankfully, soothed the pain. Tentatively, Minho opened his eyes, surprised to find that the sunlight no longer hurt his eyes. Wait...he blinked and widened his eyes before he let them go back to normal. Was one of his eyelids drooping? Minho reached up to hold his left eyelid open.

“That’s a common side effect of concussions. It’s possible that your eyelid will return to normal, but it might not.”

“Oh.”

“Is he okay?” Both Minho and Madam Pomfrey looked over to the door to find Jennie Davies, one of Ravenclaw’s Chasers, standing just inside the infirmary. Pomfrey waved her inside and she came up to the foot of Minho’s bed, her hands wringing together before her. “I’m so sorry, Minho. I didn’t mean to hit your head, I just didn’t see you coming, I’m really sorry.”

He shook his head slowly, offering her a small smile. “It’s okay.” It was his fault, really. He shouldn’t have dove into the play. Why was he so stupid? He was too focused on the Snitch, he didn’t even notice his surroundings. “Who won?”

Jennie blinked, glancing over at Madam Pomfrey, who was rummaging around in one of her the cabinets, before returning her attention to Minho. “Uh, Hufflepuff forfeited.” His heart sank and he sighed. “We don’t, um, really consider it a win though, if that makes you feel better.” Minho tried to smile but he wasn’t sure if he pulled it off. Probably not.

Pomfrey returned with a little red velvet bag, and Jennie started to back away. “I’m glad you’re doing okay now. See you later, Minho!” He waved as she walked away.

“There are a couple extra leaves in here, in case the pain returns and you can’t get here soon enough.” She passed him the bag, and he shook it a little. “You’re free to go now, Minho, but don’t forget to come back in before you go to bed.”

“Yes, ma’am.” He slipped out of bed, leaning against the bedpost when a flurry of stars blew across his vision. Once they cleared, he shuffled out of the infirmary and into the hall.

What time was it? Minho traipsed to the courtyard below the clock tower, his hand tracing the wall as he walked.

There was a chill in the air when he stepped outside, and Minho shivered as he walked outside. He cupped his hand over his eyes as he looked up, trying to decipher the placement of the hands of the clock. Like usual, he had no idea what they said. Turning, Minho looked up at the sun, guessing that it was about time for dinner.

Was he hungry? Minho rubbed his stomach. He hadn’t eaten anything today if he remembered right, so he probably needed to. But, he still wasn’t hungry. Besides, he didn’t really want to show his face in the Great Hall quite yet.

He meandered through the courtyard, stopping at one of the banisters overlooking the lawn, and his gaze settled on the Quidditch pitch.

It really wasn’t a hard concept. Catch the Snitch...just, catch it...why couldn’t he do that? Had he not practiced enough? Was there really any point to him continuing if he was going to keep making his team lose?

Minho pulled himself over the banister and slowly dropped down on the other side, squinting when the bright flashes of lights returned behind his eyes. Once they cleared, he started toward the pitch. He slipped into the locker room and grabbed his practice walnuts before he went out to grab his broom from the cupboard.

It was slow going at first, practicing. He had trouble focusing on the walnuts; he kept dropping them. Eventually, though, by the time the sun started to set, Minho found his stride. He lost it, however, when he noticed Kibum standing in the doorway of the Hufflepuff corridor.

“Crap.”

He looked angry, or upset, rather. Minho threw one last walnut and zoomed away, catching it. Looking back, he found Kibum among the shadows and made toward him, his flight sort of unsteady. He leaned on his broom when he was safely on the ground, and he smiled at Kibum as he stuffed the walnuts into his robe pocket.

“Hey, how ar -- “ Kibum grabbed the broom out of Minho’s hand. “Hey!”

He just shook his head, holding it behind him when Minho reached for it. “I can’t believe you...”

“Give it back!”

“No!”

Minho huffed, crossing his arms when Kibum raised his chin. “I have to practice.”

“No, you got hurt. You need to rest.”

“Kibummie -- “

“Don’t...” Kibum closed his eyes, sighing. “Why are you out here?”

“I told you, I have to practice...so...so I can get good.”

Kibum tossed the broom aside, Minho making a sort of choked sound when it hit the ground. He sat, crossing his arms over his knees before he looked up at Minho. “Why do you beat yourself up so much?”

Blinking, Minho averted his eyes. “I...I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Minho, I have literally seen you hit yourself. Several times.” His jaw twitched and his fists clenched at his side. “You didn’t do that today, did you?” Minho shook his head. “Good.” He shifted his feet and froze when his head started to throb again. His hand shook as he dug into his pocket for the bag of aereveli leaves, pulling one out and placing it under his tongue.

Kibum patted the grass beside him and took a deep breath as Minho sat down. “What’s really going on?”

He shrugged, shaking his head. “It’s nothing.”

“It’s not nothing.” Kibum looked over at him, waiting for him to respond.

Minho propped his elbows on his knees and held his face in his hands, audibly wincing when his finger dug into his bruised temple. He took a deep breath, waiting for the aereveli leaf to take effect. Kibum started rubbing his back as the chill returned, eradicating his headache somewhat.

“It -- “ he started to say, his voice cracking a little. How should he put this? “I -- “ his voice morphed into a pained groan when as his head continued to throb.

“Hey, hey,” Kibum said, and Minho could hear him shifting beside him. “Lay down for a minute and rest.” Minho opened one eye when he heard a patting sound to see Kibum’s legs stretched out before him and his hand patting his lap. Slowly, Minho turned and laid down, his head resting on Kibum’s thigh. He started carding his fingers through Minho’s hair, applying the slightest bit of pressure to his scalp.

It felt...really nice, actually.

“My dad used to do this for my mom when she would get migraines,” Kibum said as his fingers spread over the crown of his head. “I hope it helps.”

“I think it might be already.”

“Mm.”

Minho listened to the chirps of the crickets while he sorted through his thoughts. Everything within him hated to lose, and yet, he kept losing. Again and again and again. What would his father even say, if he could see him now? “I told you so”? “You were never meant for this”? “Minseok would be better suited for this”?

He sighed heavily, and Kibum stopped his ministrations for a second. “What’s wrong?” he asked once he started massaging again.

“What’s the point of playing a game if you’re just gonna lose?”

“Hmm...for the enjoyment? The exercise? The thrill of the game?”

Minho tipped his head back slightly, looking up at a smirking Kibum. “I said that.” He did say that to Kibum a little over a year ago, almost word for word, when they were walking back to the castle after a Quidditch game. Kibum had asked why someone would even want to play Quidditch, and Minho had laughed.

“You did.” Minho looked back at the sky, watching the stars twinkle into their places in the darkening sky. “Someone has to be the loser, Choi, and sometimes that person has to be you. It absolutely sucks, but that’ll make the win all the sweeter.”

“I’ve made us lose every game so far though. I’m just not good enough.”

“Did Tanner say that?”

Minho sighed. “No.”

“Your teammates?”

“They’re probably all thinking it.”

Kibum scoffed. “If they are, then they’re wrong.” He ruffled Minho’s hair lightly. “You ready to go back to the infirmary?”

“She said I didn’t have to come back until morning." Wait, no...he was supposed to come see her before bed. How did he forget that?

“She also probably said no to Quidditch.” Oh...right. When Minho didn’t respond right away, Kibum stopped rubbing his head. “Come on, let’s get you up.”

Stars flooded his vision once again as he sat up, his stomach churning something fierce. He stopped midway to sitting straight up, and Kibum’s hand pressed against his back as he stood, holding him steady until he could help Minho off the ground. Kibum pulled his arm over his shoulders, holding onto his wrist.

“You okay to start walking?”

Minho could feel himself swaying a little, as well as Kibum’s grip tightening on his wrist. Once the white sparks disappeared from his vision, he stepped forward and Kibum followed. Their progress back to the castle was slow -- night had completely set in by the time they stepped inside. When they got to the infirmary, Minho expected Kibum to drop him off on one of the beds and go.

Instead, he pulled back the covers for him and helped him sit on the bed. “Stay here for a minute, okay?” Kibum left his side and went over to the closed door of the apartment within the infirmary, his staccato knocks loud in the quiet room. “Is it alright if Minho and I stay here tonight?” he asked when the door swung open to reveal Madam Pomfrey.

“Did something happen?”

“Well, he was practicing Quidditch,” Minho winced when Pomfrey gasped, but Kibum continued. “And that won’t happen again until you say it’s okay, I guarantee you. But, he’s still got a bit of a headache, and I’m worried about him.”

“Is that why you want to stay as well?”

“Yes, ma’am, for my own peace of mind.”

Neither said anything for a moment, and Minho wanted to turn around to see what was happening, but he also didn’t trust his stomach. “Take these,” Pomfrey said, and Minho perked up. “I’ll be just in here if something happens, so please come get me if he vomits or has a seizure.”

“Yes, ma’am.” The door clicked closed and soon Kibum was back in front of him with an armful of striped pajamas. “Do you want me to help with your boots?”

Minho looked down at himself, somewhat surprised to find himself still in his Quidditch uniform. But then again, why wouldn’t he be? “Sure.” He could manage the rest, probably, but he didn’t think he would have been able to take off his boots.

Kibum dropped the pajamas beside Minho and knelt before him, working on unlacing the boots. Minho had unbuttoned his robe by the time Kibum finished. It took some effort and Kibum’s help to get him the rest of the way out of his uniform and into the pajamas, but soon he was tucked in bed and Kibum was changing himself. Minho closed his eyes, to give Kibum a little bit of privacy while he changed, and opened them again when he thought he heard him slipping into bed.

“Are you okay?” Kibum asked when Minho met his eyes.

What did he ever do to deserve Kibum? He was always so kind and gentle and supportive. He never made him feel like he was stupid or that he didn’t belong here. Whenever Kibum was around, he could almost feel his soul become at peace, because there was no pretense with him.

He was just his best friend...just Kibum.

He wanted to thank him for everything he had done for him, both today and since the moment they met on the train to school, but the words escaped him now. Kibum’s brow scrunched in concern when Minho started to speak and then didn’t.

“Minho?”

“Yeah,” he said, and Kibum relaxed. “I’ll be fine.”

A twig cracked beneath Kibum’s foot and he stopped, glancing around at the menacing shadows. The Forbidden Forest was dark, even for midday. It might have just been his imagination, but earlier he definitely heard a growl somewhere deep in the forest. He listened for one now, but there was only the distant sound of snapping jaws…or mandibles…he had not forgotten the warning about there being giant spiders in these woods.

Shuddering, Kibum hugged himself, looking back in the direction he came. “Minho?” he said in a whispered yell, hoping that his voice would carry through the forest.

“Yeah?”

“Where are you?”

“Back here!” For some reason, Minho sounded exasperated. “How are you running so fast in this wind?”

“Wind?” Kibum muttered to himself. There was no wind; the forest was eerily still. Tentatively, he started trudging back to where he thought he had heard Minho’s voice. He found him quickly, bracing himself against a tree while his hair and robes whipped wildly about, as though he were caught in a terrible gust of wind.

Their eyes met, and Minho’s widened. “You don’t feel it?” he yelled, his voice echoing through the forest. Kibum shook his head, and Minho tried to push himself up off the tree, only to get slammed back against it. He gulped, looking back at Kibum. “Something’s wrong…”

Kibum awoke to the sound of a squeaky mattress. Fredrick was probably moving in his sleep again. He opened his eyes, confusion furrowing his brow. The infirmary…

He sat up, looking across the way to see Minho convulsing in his bed. Instantly he bolted out of bed and to Minho’s side, his hands hovering over his arms. One of Minho’s eyes was partially open, but he could only see the white of his eye. Before he could even decide if he should hold him down or not, Minho stilled, his head sinking into his pillow.

“Minho?” he whispered past the lump in his throat.

Drool dripped down his chin, soaking into his pillow. His breathing faltered and his left eye twitched as his body seized up. Was it happening again? He needed to get Madam Pomfrey…wake her up…have her help Minho because she would know what to do.

But, Kibum couldn’t move, couldn’t leave him alone. Not like this.

The mattress started squeaking again as Minho convulsed once more, his teeth gnashing as his head whipped back and forth and his arms and shoulder and legs repeatedly twitched. Before he could make himself run for Madam Pomfrey, she was there, stepping between Minho and Kibum.

She was still in her nightgown, and her hair was out of its usual bun, a wavy silver cascade down her back. At any other time, he would have thought it odd to see her like this, instead of her normal nurse’s uniform. But, at the moment he was just relieved.

He staggered back to his bed and sat on the edge, watching her through tear-pricked eyes as she sat Minho up once he stopped convulsing. She rested Minho’s head on her shoulder. “Kibum.” The sound of her stern voice in the infirmary was jarring. He wiped the tears from his eyes as he rushed to her. “Get me one of the buckets from the shelf behind the partition.”

Kibum bolted over to the ivory curtain and grabbed one of the small tin buckets. He hurried to pass it to her, just in time, too, because Minho started dry heaving. Gulping, Kibum tried to block out the sound, but he eventually had to leave the infirmary so he did not vomit himself.

He didn’t go far. The sound of retching was still faint, but not as bad as it would be if he were still in the room. Kibum sank to the ground, hugging his knees to his chest as he waited.

Tears sprang to his eyes, and he let them fall. He felt so…helpless. He had when Minho fell off his broom, and he had for the rest of the day, up until he finally saw him again. But now, he was hit with a fresh wave of helplessness. His sniffles were loud in the empty corridor, and he glanced around at the darkness, freezing when he saw several curious ghosts shimmering in the distance.

“Kibum,” Madam Pomfrey’s voice broke him of his trance. “He’s okay now, you ca – “

He was already on his feet and running back to the infirmary. Minho gave him a tired smile and relief flooded through him. “Are you okay?” he asked, his voice quiet.

“Yeah, I’m just tired.”

“Go ahead and sit on his bed, Kibum, “ Pomfrey said as she passed behind him on her way to her room. “We’re all staying up for a little bit.”

Kibum went around to the right side of his bed and sat beside him when Minho carefully scooted over. “Are you sure you’re okay?”

Minho started to nod but thought better of it. “Yeah. She said I had a seizure, but I don’t remember it.”

“Two.”

“Hmm?”

“You had two.”

Minho sank back into his pillow with a wince. His body must be aching now, after all that. “That’s probably why I’m so tired, huh.” Kibum nodded, and Madam Pomfrey came back into the infirmary, a stack of cards in her hand.

“Have either of you ever played Go Fish?” she asked as she sat down on Minho’s bed as well. Kibum shook his head as Minho hummed in affirmation. “It’s pretty straight-forward. You’re supposed to collect one of the same card from each suit.” She shuffled them one, twice on her knee before she dealt seven cards to each of them.

It was a pretty simple game, Kibum found himself getting the hang of it by the end of their second game. Minho struggled at first, too. He seemed confused by the game, despite saying that he had played it before. Pomfrey talked them both through it, her voice gentler than Kibum ever remembered it being.

Midway through their fifth hand, Minho slumped against Kibum, his head resting on his shoulder. Kibum hid his cards immediately, then glanced down at him. “Are you okay?”

“I…just really tired.”

“What did he say?” Pomfrey asked, the concern in her voice tearing Kibum’s attention away from Minho for a moment.

“That he’s really tired.” Oh…Kibum blinked, looking between Minho and Madam Pomfrey. Had he not been speaking English since his injury? No, he had…maybe a word or two, but he hadn’t since his seizure. “Can he not speak English anymore?”

Pomfrey’s brows rose in surprise, and she shook her head. “No, don’t worry! It’s fairly common for someone to revert back to their original language after a head injury. I’m sure he’ll be alright. It’ll just take some time and patience.”

“I can help him.”

She gave Kibum a small smile. “I’m sure you can.” Minho nestled his head on Kibum’s shoulder, and they both watched him for a moment. “Let’s get him laying down again. That’ll be better for his head.”

Kibum supported his head as Pomfrey lowered him onto the bed, and then he fussed with the blanket while she went to go grab a rocking chair and her yarn. He pushed Minho’s hair off his forehead, his heart clenching as he inspected the garish violet bruise stretching from his temple and down his cheek.

“You can go ahead and go to sleep again, Kibum. I’ll watch over him.”

Reluctantly, Kibum left Minho’s side and trudged back to his bed. Once he slipped back under the covers, he arranged himself so that he could still see Minho whenever she would rock forward in her chair. All was silent for several moments, other than the creak of the rocking chair, the clacking of the knitting needles, and Minho’s steady breathing.

Kibum’s own eyes grew heavy, but he fought to stay awake. He had to. What if Minho needed him again?

The night stretched on, and Kibum roused himself when he dozed off for a few seconds. He glanced over at the windows lining the far wall and noticed the dark blue of night starting to lighten. It was probably five in the morning. He looked back at Minho, who hadn’t so much as moved since they laid him down to sleep.

His eyes slid shut as he remembered that it was Saturday, which meant that there were no classes today. They could both rest to their hearts’ content. The thought relieved him and he smiled, finally letting sleep take him.

Aesthetically speaking, Lowell Cafe is like any other West Hollywood restaurant: the nachos are vegan, the outdoor patio is lined with live plant walls, and the dappled sunlight sets customers up for a perfect boomerang of them ripping a bong.

Stylized as Lowell Farms: A Cannabis Cafe but also referred to as Lowell Cafe, the restaurant is the first of its kind in the United States. Part dispensary and part eatery, guests choose from an extensive menu of pre-rolled joints, ounces of flower, vape pods, and dabs. Customers can also snack on a variety of dishes designed to compliment the inevitable munchies. It's almost like visiting a gastropub, but instead of splitting fries and sipping whatever beer's on tap, you can smoke whatever flower is in season.

 "You’re entering the world of post-cannabis prohibition," the press release for the cafe promised. 

When I arrived at the cafe on Tuesday afternoon, the line of walk-in hopefuls was already wrapped around the block. 

All guests, regardless of whether or not they consume cannabis products on-site, must be over 21 years old. At the door, a bouncer with a tablet scanned my ID, which was added to an internal database used for cannabis purchases. After being seated, a Flower Host stopped by to give us the rundown. Instead of checking my ID when I later ordered weed, the host checked her tablet for proof of age.

Because regulated cannabis is a legislative nightmare, Lowell Cafe is actually two different businesses. Under California's current laws, cannabis lounges like Lowell Cafe aren't allowed to sell food or beverages, so the front patio facing the street is a basic, run-of-the-mill eatery that serves food but can't sell weed. The interior and enclosed back patio are 420-friendly areas where patrons can order food from the restaurant, buy cannabis products, and consume it. The restaurant, which serves food, beverages, and as soon as it secures its license, wine, is a separate entity from the dispensary. 

Basically, as West Hollywood's community and legislative affairs manager John Leonard told Eater LA, there are "two separate businesses on two separate premises."

"Patrons in the cannabis consumption area are allowed to order food from the adjacent restaurant," he continued. "And the food from the adjacent restaurant is delivered to the consumption area."

That whole set-up made ordering both weed and food pretty confusing. Guests order from two separate servers, one for food and one for weed. Likened to a sommelier, the Flower Host — the person serving weed — explains the various products, suggests food and flower pairings, and shows you how to use the paraphernalia available to rent. 

This is where the confusion comes in — since there was one server for food and a separate one for weed, figuring out who was staffing each overlapping section in the hectic restaurant seemed like a guessing game. 

Choosing weed can also be a ride. Lowell Cafe's cannabis selection is packaged in an intimidating leather-bound menu similar to wine menus at fancy restaurants. The cafe is a fully stocked dispensary, and its selection includes pre-roll packs ranging from six to 14 joints per package, edibles with up to 100 milligrams of THC, and an eighth of flower. And like buying alcohol in bars or restaurants, expect a steep up-charge; eighths will cost you $55 to $65. Patrons can also bring their own weed for a "toke-age" fee of $20, like a corkage fee in a traditional restaurant. 

For the most part, buying a pricey bottle of wine or an elaborate cocktail is justifiable because the party is likely to finish it before leaving. Only the strongest of stoners can finish off an eighth of weed or 14 whole joints in the recommended one and a half hours sitting at Lowell Cafe. Thanks to municipal regulations, guests can't take the leftover weed home with them, which can lead to some absurd speed hits in an effort to finish products, and will inevitably lead to wasted weed or upset guests. 

Granted, it didn't seem like the Flower Hosts stopped anyone from sneaking unfinished weed into pockets as diners paid their bills before leaving. 

I told our first Flower Host that I tended to stay away from THC-intense indica strains because of my tendency to cry in public when I consume them. The Flower Hosts' familiarity with cannabis varies. The first one I spoke to recommended whatever pre-roll had the highest amount of THC, but another, a former weed farmer who goes by Circa Suicide, told me that first time visitors should try to stick with low doses in case they get anxious. 

My friend Rebecca and I ended up splitting a pre-roll sativa joint called Kushberry Cheesecake, a 21.88 percent THC joint that cost $20. (A similarly fruity sativa pre-roll with a similar THC content, for reference, goes for about $10 through marijuana delivery services. Many dispensaries in Los Angeles will also toss in a pre-roll for free with the purchase of an eighth.) The menu described it as "Invigorating, Active" and it yielded the kind of high that makes the world more visually interesting while still letting you think clearly. It's also the kind of body high that motivates you to demolish a plate of vegan nachos at an alarming, but almost admirable pace. 

I was worried that once I started smoking, I'd be overwhelmed by the cafe. I've visited Amsterdam's coffeeshops before, and while most of my experiences were lovely, I have felt suffocated by the smoky air, dim lighting, and crowded spaces. I can get pretty paranoid when I smoke weed that contains just THC and no CBD, but I felt at peace lazily passing off that joint. At times, the tightly packed tables were a touch claustrophobic and a particularly lengthy cover of Fleetwood Mac's Dreams felt like it was four decibels too loud, but the "Invigorating, Active" part of this high never felt overbearing. The air inside wasn't excessively smoky, either, thanks to the cafe's ventilation system. 

"I would bring my parents here, I would bring my partners here," Circa Suicide said as I snacked on what may have been the best burger I've eaten in L.A. (That might have been the weed deciding that, though.) "I would even bring my coworkers here. It's a really nice, neutral vibe."

Circa Suicide added that since not everyone does well getting high in such an overstimulating environment, she recommends not smoking at all if you're anxious about being anxious. If you do decide to partake, take it slow. 

"Take one hit, put it out, give it ten minutes," she said, explaining how first-time smokers should try it out in a public setting like Lowell Cafe. "You can always go back in for one more. If you're feeling weird, we're here to bring water and talk to you." 

At times, the Flower Hosts seemed more like well-meaning parental units checking on an after school hang than typical budtenders. When the couple next to Rebecca and I fell into a couch lock, punctuated by bursts of giggles, a Flower Host stopped by and offered them bottled water. When I put out the last of the joint in the Lowell Farms-branded ashtray, a food server asked if I wanted any other munchies-quelling snacks off the menu. Circa Suicide recommended pairing the ice cream sundae with a Banana OG pre-roll before leaving to teach a first-time smoker how to roll a joint.

Overall, the first public American cannabis cafe didn't exceed high expectations, but that's more the fault of regulatory confusion than poor planning. On one hand, Lowell Cafe is just a public place to smoke weed. On the other, it's also pioneering the way American culture approaches consuming cannabis in public. Considering the exhaustive list of limitations Lowell Cafe had to work with — separating businesses, a ban on serving cannabis-infused food, and state laws forbidding the sale of alcohol and cannabis on the same premise — Lowell Cafe managed to pull off an impressive blend of bar culture and weed. 

But regulating weed like alcohol also holds back the cannabis industry. Laws that work for alcohol, like not allowing patrons to bring home extra product, don't make sense when applied to weed. That, though, is in the hands of municipal governments to reform. 

Lowell Cafe's social impact is complicated as well. Paying for overpriced weed and taking the afternoon off to get baked is an immense privilege. As L.A. Taco noted earlier this year, greater Los Angeles' booming marijuana industry is promising, but it leaves convicted felons with non-violent drug charges behind. People of color have been, and still are disproportionately incarcerated for it. Part of the application process to secure a spot as one of eight approved cannabis consumption lounges involved taking "social equity" into account, which includes prison reform and minority inclusion. In its FAQ, Lowell Cafe says it gives "special employment consideration" to recently pardoned, non-violent cannabis offenders. But like L.A. Taco says, "being given priority to work minimum wage or low paying jobs at the bottom of a billion-dollar business feels like too-little-too-late." 

I left Lowell Cafe satiated by delicious food and gently toasted, not quite baked enough to want to take a walk. Over 750 people visited during its opening day, according to a Lowell Cafe spokesperson. While it wasn't revolutionary, smoking on a lively outdoor patio certainly beat the "prohibition"-era experience of hotboxing a friend's grandpa's car and messily ordering pizza. And it's paving the way for the not only West Hollywood's cannabis consumption lounges, but the many sure to pop up as legalized states figure out how to regulate it.

Lowell Cafe sits at the awkward crossroad of legalized weed and clumsy regulation — the marijuana industry is moving forward, but the government can't keep up. At least the food is good while the rest of us wait.

I had an ok to good week. Subscriptions run better and there are more UI fixes and basic theming for Qt.

subscriptions

Subscriptions have always been resource heavy. As last year's downloader overhaul extended their capabilities, we saw increased CPU lag with many subscription operations. I had hoped to completely fix this this week, even permitting subs with >250,000 items cached, but the surgery needed to figure this out was more complicated than I expected. While I otherwise prepped for this next step, I also tightened up subscription timing code and wrote a new scheduler that reduces overall subscription resource needs.

Subscriptions will now try to load when they are due, and only then. So, if a query in your sub is due to check in 45 minutes, or if it has file to download but has run out bandwidth for 45 minutes, it should now run, typically, in 45-60 minutes. They will also respond better to cancelling and pause events, and if only 30 of 100 queries are due for a check in this run, or have outstanding files to download, you will now see x/30 on the popup progress text and gauge, just as better indication of how much work remains.

Previously, subs checked every four hours. It meant a bunch of wasted CPU for subs that were not due, late checks for subs that were due just moments after the check time, and also a delayed 'clumping up' of work. Today's change is subtle but significant, so I am interested in feedback from all users of subs--if you notice anything odd, bad, or great, please let me know. Ideally, subs will be quieter for you, running more often when you are not looking.

Although the data overhaul was too much work to do in one week, I now have a good plan and am in better position to get it done. I really want subs to load and save their metadata in milliseconds so the manage subs dialog can launch equally quickly and the client api can start talking to them. The year is fading, so I am not sure when this will get done, but hopefully this week's scheduling will at least relieve some of the work involved.

Qt

Hydrus now has very simple support for Qt styles. Please check the new options->style page. All users are encouraged to try out the 'style' option, which should have one or more flavours for your OS and also 'Fusion'. These will change how buttons and other widgets are drawn across the program.

Advanced users may wish to play with 'stylesheet' support, which uses css/qss files to change colours and layouts using portable files. This is still prototype, just rough importing of stylesheets from a barebones folder in the install dir, and is likely to be replaced with something more user-friendly and technically sensible in the coming weeks. If you play with this, I am interested in areas where hydrus's old colour system conflicts foolishly with a qss stylesheet (such as some panel backgrounds and the green/red yes/no buttons on many dialogs), and also recommendations for stylesheets you would like bundled as future hydrus defaults.

The macOS build can now do page tab drag and drop again! Media drag and drops between tabs should also work. Everything should line up right and work like the Windows and Linux builds, but please let me know if it does not. A tip here, if you still have trouble with a centered page tab bar, is just to set the Fusion style as above, which will make hydrus look more like a standard PC application. You may prefer the macOS look, but if not, you now have the option.

Beyond a bunch of general bugfixes, I also improved the stability of some review bandwidth panels and some bad 'should I close/exit?' dialogs that were either not respecting 'no' answers or causing unusual behaviour as 'yes' closes were going on.

Pixiv tag search and twitter username lookup get updated default downloaders this week. Pixiv should be fixed, and twitter should work more efficiently, only getting 'media' tweets.

Client shutdown should now be faster and snappier for most users.

File export filename phrases now support a new '{file_id}' term that substitutes a unique permanent numerical identifier. If you need to create guaranteed-unique filenames, this is easier than using the '{hash}' term.

wrote a new subscription manager to better look after subscription scheduling

rather than checking every four hours or after manage subs dialog close, subscriptions now record an indication of when they are next due for work, whether that is the estimated next check time or when bandwidth is free on remaining file downloads, and launch in a fifteen-minute window around that time. delays due to previous errors or user cancels are also taken into account. this reduces background cpu and i/o greatly for clients with large subs

if a sub is paused, or all its queries are paused, it will now never be reloaded after first load until a change via the manage subs dialog

furthermore, if a single sub takes a very long time to work, the whole sublist can re-cycle if they come up due for more work before it is finished

if a sub query is DEAD but still has outstanding files to download, it will no longer automatically pause

subs now clean up more tidily if they are running on a program exit

the subscription popup now shows check/file progress based on the number of queries that appear to have pending work. instead of 'query 300/450' with 420 that aren't due, you'll get 'query 12/30'. if a query becomes due during a round of checking, another round of checking will run

But to succeed, the bill will have to be passed by both the House and Kentucky Senate with just five working days left in the legislative session. Nemes said that there is still enough time for the bill to pass.

“It’s not too late,” said Nemes. “Where there’s a will there’s a way. We have enough days. We’re going to need a good push. It’s not probable.”

If both chambers are able to approve the bill before the session ends, it would head to Gov. Matt Bevin, who indicated last month that he would support a medical marijuana measure as long as its sole purpose was not to raise revenue for the state. HR 136 includes only a small excise tax on medical marijuana that would be used to regulate the program and provide cannabis to low-income patients.

“You raise any money, you’re raising it off the back of sick people and that’s not what we want,” Nemes said.

Patients Push for Change

Cassie Everett, who has epilepsy, appeared at the hearing with a bag full of pharmaceuticals she uses, with limited success, to treat her condition.

“I honestly just want a better option,” Everett said. “I personally have never tried medical marijuana. But I would like to have the choice.”

Eric Crawford told members of the committee that he already uses cannabis instead of opioids to treat the pain and muscle spasms from a spinal cord injury he experienced more than twenty years ago. Crawford wept after the vote to advance the bill.

“I’m overjoyed,” Crawford said. “This is a big deal. We’ve made a big moment.”

He said that even if the bill does not succeed this year, the cause has gained momentum and could be successful in 2020.

“People should have hope,” Crawford said.

Without legalization, Crawford said that he’ll continue to find himself on the wrong side of the law for using his medicine of choice.

“I am viewed as a criminal in the state I love,” he said.

I follow two things very closely — cleantech and US politics. I consider the latter a civic duty, but seldom weave it into my work. I listen to segments from many sources across the political spectrum and read articles across the political spectrum. I love MSNBC’s coverage because it is generally so good at cutting through the noise, digging into the topics that matter the most (imho), and calling B.S. what it is — B.S.

However, MSNBC doesn’t know cleantech. In fact, it has disturbed me to see how much some of its cleantech coverage (which is minimal in the first place) throws sensible logic and facts out the window in order to smear Tesla and Elon Musk. I’ve complained before about their lack of knowledge about the solar market and solar policies as well, and I’ve seen enough snide, stupid comments about Tesla and Elon Musk that I just typically skip over the Elon videos. However, I accidentally hit play on one today — holy shit was it disturbing.

Below are 10+ insanely stupid claims and insinuations made by MSNBC host Stephanie Ruhle (who I love on other topics) and this segment’s guest, Axios Chief Financial Correspondent Felix Salmon. Again, I find Axios to be a great source of political reporting, so it disturbs me how horrid this guy’s understanding of Tesla and basic business is.

1. The first problem is that they jump right in with an implication that Elon Musk and Tesla were guilty and $20 million isn’t a big enough fine for them! They did not note that Elon Musk did not admit guilt (and that was reportedly one reason he didn’t agree to the initial settlement). They did not even note that it was up for debate. The framing started with the presumption that Elon Musk and Tesla were guilty of something, and something very bad.

2. They also assume the rejection of the initial settlement offer was idiotic, without acknowledging that Elon Musk did not want to lie to himself and others and admit guilt (and did not have to admit guilt in the eventual settlement). Perhaps it was an effort to call the SEC’s bluff, given how extreme and unusual the SEC’s attack on Musk and Tesla was. Stephanie Ruhle and Felix Salmon do not mention any of this, which I think is idiotic if you actually want to discuss what happened and why it happened like it did.

3. The Axios reporter claims Tesla never made a profit — which is not true. Tesla reported a quarterly profit back in 2013.

4. Stephanie Ruhle gets on what seems like a resentful high horse and claims that Tesla’s vehicles don’t make money. They make a ton of money. In fact, the Model 3 pulled in more revenue than any other car in the US in August (and surely again in September). Tesla makes a lot of money on each car it sells, but it has long been putting that money into faster growth. It could have been profitable with the Model S years ago and just sat on that or slowly grown. Instead, it put all profits plus some extra cash into developing and bringing to mass production the Model X, Model 3, and batteries for other projects at Gigafactory 1, the largest battery factory in the world and the second largest building in the world (already). It has also put money into developing the Model Y, Tesla Semi, next-generation Tesla Roadster, and surely much more. This is really not a complicated or difficult thing to understand, yet Ruhle and Salmon act as if it is an invisible, irrelevant point and don’t even come close to bringing it up.

Frankly, it’s totally idiotic to a) pretend Tesla doesn’t make money on its cars and 2) isn’t pumping that money into rapid growth, growth that has already led to it going from 0 mass produced cars to a rate of ~200,000–300,000 a year in just ~6 years!

5. The Axios reported goes even further and claims Tesla hasn’t been able to build cars. What?!?!?!?! The Tesla Model 3 was the 5th best selling car in terms of units in August, and possibly ranked higher in September! Tesla is passing up Jaguar and Porsche in terms of annual production. It produced more cars in August than every other luxury carmaker! “Hasn’t been able to build cars?” He should be fired on the spot for such an inane comment.

6. His next line: “He’s made almost no cars over the 10 years or so that Tesla’s been in existence.” So. Much. Stupid. Seriously? The company in just 6 years has crushed every other automaker in the production of electric cars and is now crushing luxury automakers on the whole in their bread & butter luxury car markets. My brain cannot even fathom how someone who is supposedly an expert on Tesla can make such a stupid comment on national television.

7. He also claims that every time Elon Musk makes a promise, he fails to deliver on it. Obviously, people and institutional investors who have Tesla valuation at a cool $53 billion don’t think Elon Musk fails to deliver. Obviously, hundreds of thousands of owners and millions of will-be-owners see that Elon Musk delivers very well. Also, as we’ve shown recently, some of his forecasts from years ago appear to now be spot on. Maybe Felix should read CleanTechnica with an open mind and learn a thing or 300,000.

8. Stephanie Ruhle then chimed in to drop another lie, or at least misleading statement. She indicated that Elon said the company was going private. Nope. He specifically wrote that he was considering taking Tesla private.

9. She also mentioned that “competitors” were “getting cars out there.” What competitors? What cars? She obviously doesn’t know what she’s talking about and why Tesla doesn’t yet have any genuine competitors.

10. Felix decided then that he hadn’t been ridiculously out of touch with reality enough earlier in the interview and decided to say that Elon has a crazy, narrow, short-term obsession. Huh? What? The dude is one of the most long-term, visionary thinkers and doers of our age, of modern society. This guy wants to say that Elon is the one too focused on short-term matters?

I’m sure I could keep going, but I had to turn the video off. It got too absurd. As I was turning it off, the clueless reporter from Axios was saying that Elon told the SEC he chose $420 as the going-private price because he was trying to impress his girlfriend with a weed joke. There were several things wrong about that statement. Elon got to $419 based on math. Because it was so close to $420 and 420 is a popular term for jokes due to its connection with weed (and he loves jokes — not weed, which hurts productivity), he decided to round up to $420. It wasn’t the real basis of the price, and it definitely wasn’t to impress his girlfriend. Ugh. I am disappointed that I accidentally clicked play on the video and had to sit through that disturbing nonsense. It’s as bad as the stuff I’ve seen on Fox News about other matters.

I expect MSNBC to be better than Fox News on everything, not just politics & the overall economy. Come on, Stephanie.
