1689 is hitting me again today, because when Morpheus asks Hob "Do you still wish to live?" and looks like he's almost crying? It's not only because he knows what kind of pain Hob went through and can relate and would himself rather not feel it anymore - it's also because he might think he has lost Hob to Despair.

I thought about the story of the Emperor of America and the bet between Dream and Despair and how he makes a depressed man a king and gives him a dream which ultimately shields him from the influence of all his other siblings (except Death and Destiny), confirming again the superiority of dreams over desire, despair and delirium.

If Hob chooses Death now, in 1689, Dream will have failed him. Dreams will have failed him. Because dreams are meant to inspire and invigorate, to help not to burden or hinder, and if Hob chooses to end his life now then Dream will have proof (he thinks) that he is broken beyond repair. If he can no longer make men want to live, what good is he as the Lord of Dreams?

If Hob chooses to give up, then Dream will likely choose so as well.
