FULL REVIEWS: “Enchanting Grom Fright”

The hype for this episode was unreal. We got the crew telling us that we weren’t ready on social media. It was a madhouse. To think that the little ship that could would have this big a leap in canon is unreal. Let’s just get to it.

The cold open starts with Luz trying to find more glyphs in her off time. I thinks it really shows her development so far. Now she’s willing to do the work to figure out her kind of magic, as oppose to say episode two where she just wanted to be great because she was “chosen.”

“My glyph skills are blossoming”

But then reality ensues...

Using the portal to let the wifi signal into The Owl House is not the dumbest reason I’ve heard to open an interdimensional portal between worlds but it is one of the most mundane. SOMEHOW, Luz can still receive texts from her mom FROM ANOTHER WORLD. Not that it makes too much of a difference since Luz barely answers them. 

As much fun as it is to focus on the magic and the shipping and the friendship and the curse, Luz still knows that she’s still lying to her mom. The guilt is there, but luckily being a main character keeps her too busy to think about it.

“Luz, time to fill that darling head of yours with...huuh huuh huuh HAKKK, mmm, mmm, mmh, delicious knowledge.”

It’s that time of year again that Luz doesn’t know about yet, Grom: The Boiling Isles’ weird version of prom. Every fantasy world has one.

Amity bumps into Luz, and I know this is going to sound weird, but I really like Amity’s “Watch it, nitwit.” Amity’s character has changed and developed from our perspective which is the perspective of Luz and The Owl House fam. But she’s not a completely different character. Amity still has a bit of a temper and gets agitated easily. It makes sense to me and I’m glad I haven’t found anyone be like “Hey if Amity is nicer, why did she get mad when she bumped into someone?” 

Amity is nicer to Luz and co. because she’s gotten to know Luz and co. You don’t treat everyone in your life the same. Amity is one of those people that you need to defrost with first. Belief is backed up by experience and so are people’s personas. (Not that persona. I’m being serious here.) Because of Amity’s experiences, she’s believed that in order to survive she has to put people at arm’s length, then when she gets to know you, she’ll decide if she wants to let you in or not. So I guess that means that based on her interactions with Luz, Amity has decided...

You know what? I’ll save that for my Lumity meta.

The popular theory is that Amity was going to put her note in Luz’s locker, hence why she bumped into them. But actually seeing Luz and being announced as grom queen probably made her lose her nerve.

Amity is announced to be this year’s grom queen. Luz is happy for her before Amity runs in shock and embarrassment. Okay.

Luz discovers the gym’s weapons cache (not a thing I thought I would ever type) and Amity explains grom. Since Luz is from the human world and all that.

Grom is a monster that lives under the school and needs to be defeated every year so it doesn’t invade the town. It’s a classic shape-shifting fear monster. Odd are I have (and so have you) at least seen three or four of these in our lives already. Amity doesn’t want to show the entire school her greatest fear, especially since she already knows what it is. Luz suggest talking to Bump and Amity says she’ll try.

Another scene of Eda and King laughing and mocking Luz. Because I liked it so much the first time.

Eda gets dressed up herself because she’s volunteered to chaperone grom. Luz tells her that Amity is grom queen but wishes that she could take her place. We get...you know and Luz walks off. 

“I think we should kiss to ease the tension.”

Luz randomly meets up with Amity in the woods because I guess Amity had the same idea to take a walk to clear her head. Whatever. Amity tells Luz that Bump wasn’t going to change his mind unless Amity found a replacement. Luz volunteers because...she’s Luz, friend to all.

Except maybe that spider.

Top 10 Anime Betrayals

The Blight Siblings try to help Luz train against grom only for Eda to find out about their little plan. Here’s where we find out why Eda volunteered to chaperone a Hexside event even though she hates that place:

That’s hilarious. To me. 

Luz and Amity have a moment before Luz’s debut and Amity thanks Luz for everything she’s done. They have more adorable banter before Luz takes the stage. 

“Wish me luck.”

“Luck.”

I’m guessing that’s not an expression in The Boiling Isles.

Luz faces Grom and it seems to be going better than everyone predicted until...you know

“Mija, this would be such a good shot for the trailer.”

Yup, we all predicted this. Luz’s greatest fear is her mom finding out that she’s been lying to her. Luz panics and takes off with Eda and Amity to chase after her.

Eda comes in for the save when Amity bursts in the scene saying “Boy let me tell you what.” She doesn’t really I just like saying that. You know, in my head. I mean, if you heard the way I was saying it out loud you’d probably think it was funny too but you know...text.

Grom gets a hold of Amity and transforms into her greatest fear. And we see why Amity didn’t want to face Grom in front of the whole school. She didn’t want everyone to see that Amity’s fear is very...emotional. Not physical. She’s not afraid of a giant spider or anything. It’s a little closer to the heart.

Amity clutching at her dress like a little kid is both the cutest and the saddest thing. This fear of hers is so bad it makes this fourteen year old feel like she’s four. I’m so sure she was about to cry right there. Or maybe that’s me. Could be both.

Luz picks up the note and discovers that Amity was trying to ask somebody out before she was announced as grom queen. Amity was afraid of being rejected. Luz tries to ease her fears by asking her out to grom. 

Trying seeing it from Luz’s point of view. She has no idea who Amity wants to ask out. Luz doesn’t even consider that it could be her because again, belief is backed by experience. Luz was considered a weirdo with no friends in the human world. She even said earlier in the episode that she got kicked out of her last school dance for dressing like an otter. Luz has no reason to believe that someone would like her romantically. She would like to. It is a fantasy of hers, but her experience tells her that other people don’t see her that way so she doesn’t consider that Amity wanted to ask Luz out.

I’ll save the rest for another blog post, although I did talk about this last year too.

But since Amity did want to ask Luz out and Luz asked her out instead, Amity’s fears are eased. Grom does what every fear monster does when their target overcomes their fears and says “Screw it, I’m just going to kick your ass!”

And then this happens:

As a Star vs the Forces of Evil fan, let me just say this is our Blood Moon Ball moment. The moment that the show tells the audience in John Oliver’s voice, “Yup this is the ship we’re doing so strap in folks.”

Luz and Amity work together to combine magic to take down Grom. It also helps that they eased each others’ fears. Luz can’t think about her mom if she’s focused on helping Amity. 

Luz and Amity defeat Grom in a blaze of glory. Luz being Luz, decides to ask Amity who she wanted to ask out just to see if she would tell you. Amity brushes it off.

“It doesn’t matter. After all, I already got to dance with the girl I like.”

Everyone celebrates but when Luz gets home she’s more tired than anything.

Maybe it was Grom, but Luz decides to give her mom a real answer. It’s been tough but it’s also been fun. There are good and bad days. Sometimes she feels like she doesn’t belong. But she has friends. They care about her, she cares about them, and that’s more than enough reason to stay. 

THEN THIS SHIT HAPPENS!

Yeah, the Meteora moment in Star vs the Forces of Evil. The moment where the show went “Never mind that shit. Here comes a complete change in the status quo.” 

Someone or something is sending Luz’s mom letters. It’s Luz’s handwriting, but it’s clearly not Luz since she can’t spell her name right. Season one already finished and we still have no idea what this is. 

I was all happy a second ago. Now I’m nervous as all hell. It’s a madhouse I tells ya. A madhouse!

FINAL SCORE: 5 - LOVED IT!

Wow. Just wow. This episode had everything. Jokes, plot, romance, character development, cameos, dancing, girls, MOM(?), crashing on your couch because technically I’m homeless.

I shipped Lumity before this, but this was the episode that told me that yes it was going to happen. We’re all in. 

But it’s not perfect.

Yeah, did any of you noticed that I didn’t even mention the B-plot? I’m going to be honest. The reason is...

I hate it.

I hate the B-plot so much that I skip it every time I watch this episode. I still don’t think Gus is that funny or interesting. Hell, Skara’s mini plot with her date and/or boyfriend was funnier.

But everything else about the episode more than outshines the B-plot so I still give it a five.

Next time we finish up the lumity trilogy next time.

The Queens + Dealing with online tech support

Did anyone ask for this weirdly specific list? No. Will I write it anyway? Yes. Am I writing this while Virgin Media keeps me on hold for hours on end? Also yes.

ANYWAY.

Aragon: Absolutely channelling big Karen vibes here. Very ‘Pass me over to your superior, please!’ At her most regal. Unfrotuntely for her, she has to be on hold for ages until she even gets to the point of having a real human to be Karen-ish at, so until then, she just gets more and more tense and angry. If she smoked, she would be stress-smoking. Has considered taking it up purely for this. The other queens stay OUT of the living room while Catalina is on the phone- the only one allowed in is Cathy, because she’s the only one Catalina probably won’t snap at if she offers tea or whatever. Basically, Cathy tells the others when it’s safe to go in,  which is usually an hour or so after the call has actually finished.

Anne: Messes with the pre-recorded question-and-answers and says silly stuff into the phone at it. ‘Please press four if you’re thinking of leaving us-’ ‘Oh my god you’re all so freakin’ NEEDY! No wonder this relationship is ending!’ Gradually gets more aggressive as she gets more annoyed until she’s making threats to the pre-recorded on-hold music. Cathy and Kitty generally try to listen in when Anne is on the phone like this because it’s quite amusing to listen to- it’s even funnier when someone picks up the phone and hears a bit of what Anne is saying and she has to frantically backtrack and apologise. ‘No, Sir, I promise I wasn’t- shut up Cathy, it isn’t funny! No, really, I hold you and your company in the highest regard- Kitty, I swear if you don’t stop laughing-’ 

Jane: Very patient and nice- doesn’t quite GET that it’s pre-recorded message and not a real person so she’s super polite to it. ‘Please press two for other options’ ‘Thank you SO much!’ The other queens find it really adorable and eventually Kitty gives up reminding her that no one can hear her. Being on hold doesn’t bother her- she just goes about her day with her phone on speaker (backfired once when the poor person on the other end put her through just as Jane was screaming about a spider and begging Anna to come and take it away.) She is also the person all the call-centre people HOPE they’ll get put through to because she’s so understanding: ‘Oh no don’t apologise, OF COURSE I understand you’re busy! You must be working so hard, you poor thing!’. Essentially the anti-Aragon in terms of Karen-ness.

Anna: Like Jane, doesn’t really care if she gets put on hold. Keeps her phone on speaker and dances to the on-hold music, no matter if it’s terrible. Especially if it’s terrible. Aragon once walked in on her and Kitty waltzing dramatically to a really tinny rendition of Santa Clause is Coming To Town and just walked right back out again. Will cheer up the phone person with stories about good dogs she’s seen if they sound at all stressed (or even if they don’t. Some appreciate it. Some.....don’t. ‘-I swear, I’ve never seen such a huge Malamute. 10/10, would definitely pet again. My hand was LOST in his fur.’ ‘Ma’am, do you actually want to reconnect the wifi or not?’

Kitty: Really, really hates having to make calls like this, it stresses her out and she can never remember all of her passwords, and usually by the time she’s put through, she’s so anxious she’s forgotten what she wanted in the first place. Has occasionally just chosen to go without the help she needed because she doesn’t want to make the call. Will actually tear up with the stress of it all sometimes- Jane or Anna will usually sit with her for support while she makes the call if they can, and then are really pleased with her when she’s got through it. Anne will sometimes walk by and drop chocolate buttons into her lap as a motivator if Jane and Anna are busy.

Cathy: Is super enthused about the technology that allows for pre-recorded messages and feels really lucky that she lives in an age where technology is a Thing RIGHT up until she actually has to make her first call. Then she realises how much it sucks and indulges in some dramatic flopping around and bewailing the fact that electricity was ever invented to curse them all. Like Kitty, disorganised af and never knows what password she has. Jane tries to make sure Cathy writes down all passwords etc when she makes them so she doesn’t forget- Cathy does so and then immediately loses the paper and/or forgets where she wrote it down. It’s not her fault- she has a LOT of things to write down, after all. (Is also fed chocolate buttons by Anne to keep her spirits up while on hold.)

Quick Thoughts on Is This The Real Life or Is This Just A Very Bizarre Fantasy?

• It's...Chapter 10. Often known as the midpoint. I know TRR isn't exactly the most nuanced series out there, but you know what used to happen by midpoints here? Important plot stuff that had buildup and development prior to it happening.

• Funny enough all three chapter 10s so far had something to do with Constantine! Book 1's had him announce he was stepping down and making Liam king, Book 2 had the reveal that the conspiracy against the MC was his idea. And then he actually dies in Book 3 Chapter 10. Now that he's no more, I guess they brought back another asshole dad to take his place.

• PB if you were really in a mood to bring back Bertrand's dad the least you could have done was build it up properly. You had an entire freaking chapter to at least build up on the Beaumont family relationships and issues! Yet all we see is that motorcycle with a hint that never fully gets told and very little besides that.

• Like, the narrative usually takes soooo much time to build everything properly, right? With chapters and chapters of hints? Look at all these things that you built up over chapters and sometimes over books: Liam's issues with his dad...The whereabouts of Savannah...Drake's connection to Bastien...Drake's mom's ranch...Drake's special relationship with his dad...Drake's duel...Drake's secret wedding...oh.

• ...how the hell did a motorcycle fit inside THAT BOX?

• I know, I know. It's mentioned time and again that the package is huuuuge. But that's...not the kind of packaging I'd be expecting for something that large. It wouldn't be SQUARE, at least.

• Okay wait. What was Maxwell panicking and stress-dancing about again? Bertrand isn't cottoning on to this plan as quickly as Maxwell/the LI was implying in that text.

• Okay wait so their great plan for the BBBB was...Bertrand putting away his cutlery and..."roughin' it"? Aren't bachelor/ette parties supposed to be catered to the guest of honour's needs?

Or is "something you want" only meant for Savannah? Because Hana actually read up and did research and tried to cater the entire party to whatever Savannah liked - not drag her along for something that wasn't her thing with "expand your horizons!" as an excuse.

• Like me, Bertrand doesn't fully trust his brother-in-law's motives.

• Wait what.

.• Bertrand is getting a new outfit. Oh he's wearing it already. Okay good. Must be free!

WHAT. WHAT. ARE YOU TELLING ME I'M NOT SEEING ESTHER FOR THE REST OF THIS CHAPTER

• I am NOT buying Bertrand new clothes. I didn't buy any last book, and I'm not going to start buying them now. Even if I didn't buy him the swanky maroon sweater last book he somehow wound up wearing it anyway in the finale. I'm sure he'll survive and they'll probably let him wear it for free some other time lol.

• Drake leads the boys to a nearby river, hoping to catch some fish that they can cook for dinner later.

• Bertrand gets...a dilapidated fishing pole. While everyone has prepared enough to get their own, perfectly alright ones. Drake is truly from Leona's bloodline, giving Bertrand stuff that'll make his task difficult (remember how she gave Bertrand a really rough horse to the country fair?). "I just wanted you to believe in yourself", my ass. You're doing this for your own entertainment.

• Also wasn't Maxwell organizing this party? Why does the end result look so much like Drake's idea? Or maybe the boys are splitting the activities between each other or something idk.

• That's a...puffer fish?

• The funniest option is the choose to grab Drake because Bertrand calls him "the Aggressively Rustic Drake" haha. It means of course that Bertrand will not get a fish but that's okay, Drake and Liam catch more than enough for dinner.

• But if Bertrand DOES catch that big fish his chest is all puffed out in pride and he notices no one else caught a fish as big as his 😄

• You can TELL Liam chose the next activity, because it's so aggressively Cordonian 😂 You need to shoot an apple with a weapon (preferably a bow and arrow, but the game offers you a rifle and an ornate gun as well).

• Of course I went ahead and shot Drake with a rubber bullet. Sorry Bertrand but I'm sure you can get your Knight-Marksmanship and Honorary Defender of the Realm award in a kinder person's playthrough 😅

• It's a nice scene, quite reminiscent of the first half of Maxwell's armoury scene last book, which involves Maxwell and the MC playing the same game.

• Now that we're done with the apples, it's time to bring out the bubbly!

• "This is not my bachelor party," says Drake when a surprised Liam asks him about why there's no whiskey. Coulda fooled me dude I've never heard of people giving the groom a dilapidated fishing pole to fish with for that kind of thing. I mean like more than 90% of this entire plan seems to cater to your tastes more than his.

• Bertrand (about the bubbly): This is from an excellent region of France!

Maxwell: Which one?

Bertrand: ...Champagne.

• It's now night, so time for some...idk heartfelt man-talk or something.

It starts out with the main LI speaking about Bertrand and Savannah's relationship, praising them for how far they've come and there is some emphasis on the fact that they have Bartie. This leads the LI in question (if they're there) to talk candidly about their relationship with the MC and their sadness that they aren't pregnant yet.

- Liam: Speaks of how amazing the MC is and wonders if he's putting her through too much pressure on his Queen with the expectations of an heir.

- Drake: Very similar to Liam's, but this time Liam apologizes for forcing them into this kind of pressure and promises to withdraw it if that's what they want. (Liam will allow it, the narrative won't!)

- Hana: Since neither of the women are there, the conversation goes straight into Liam wondering if he did the wrong thing by placing that much pressure on them, and Bertrand reassuring him that both are phenomenal women and any child they bring up will be a worthy successor to the throne.

- Maxwell: From what @itsbrindleybinch was telling me, there's no discussion about Liam's offer or the pressure from him! The conversation is more centered around his fear that he might screw up in parenting...to which his brother has some of the best responses:

Istg when the writers really allow for those two to blossom on their own, the Brothers Beaumont dynamic is fantastic. I loved both responses from Bertrand.

I'm still wondering why there isn't much from Liam about the pressure he's placing on them, though! I mean, Maxwell and his wife are put under the same amounts of pressure so you'd expect Liam to speak up there too, right? (correct me if I'm wrong, because I can't find a full playthrough of Maxwell's route anywhere).

• The discussion slowly progresses into one about Bertrand's love for Savannah and not knowing how to show it properly to her...to which Drake responds that Bertrand needs to SHOW what he feels and maybe do a big dramatic gesture like the ones you see in romcoms (racing through an airport to confess your love, or confessing it while standing in the rain)...lmao I love how big gestures are something Savannah wants for herself but somehow she can't do the smallest things to help Bertrand feel more comfortable in her own damn home.

• Also I need to laugh at how desperately the writers are now trying to show us how "open minded" Drake is LMAO. TRR Drake looked down on his nose on practically all things not macho (including authentic Chinese food and pink cakes) and now they're making it sound like he's a romcom fan and willing to experiment with a tutu.

• Not buying that serenading scene. I didn't handhold Bertrand into telling Savannah about the Beaumont finances, nor did I handhold him into proposing. He did pretty okay without my help so far.

• The serenading scene has two main components (besides the logistics of communicating and then climbing up to her window) - telling Savannah his feelings and then singing to her. The first main options include suggestions from the boys:

Liam: Very sweet and romantic, with the kind of flowery language you would expect from Liam, and that Bertrand feels so comfortable with that he smiles as he says the words.

Drake: Very much, "I was an idiot but now I've come to my senses and I'm the luckiest man ever because of you" which...sure I can put it down to bias for his sister but now it just annoys me when I hear this. Esp during a time when he's claiming he actually likes Bertrand now.

Maxwell: Is just so fucking funny 😂

Bertrand: Savannah, I'm here because you're my...boo???

Maxwell: Trust me! Keep going!

Bertrand: Ahem. You are my boo, and I'm your...okay I'm not going to say that.

Savannah: What are you saying???

• For actually serenading her with a song you can either choose to go sweet and romantic, or you go "sexy", which tbh seems to be the funnier option because most of it is Bertrand muttering MmmMMmMmmm in place of all the sexy parts. Which is funny considering he and Savannah conceived a child atop an office desk of all places way before any of us even got to KISS our LIs 🤣

• Savannah is happy, Bertrand is happy, the boys are all back in the camp where they'll be spending the night. There's a tiny bit of "foreshadowing" in the ensuing conversation since Barthelemy is mentioned, but very much in a "Dad would be proud of you" way. I put that word "foreshadowing" in quotes coz there is very little it gives us, as opposed to how other things that have received foreshadowing were built up.

• Uh oh. BEAR ATTACK. From Kenna's pet-bear-from-Aurelia's descendant. Who somehow ended up in the woods in Texas 😂

• Drake tries to distract the bear, and Bertrand can either join him or go with Liam and Maxwell who are leading the way to an alternative location.

• We're out in the wilderness somewhere, and getting back to our tents is a diamond option. It's a fun diamond option though, and it doesn't involve me doing any unnecessary matchmaking.

• Liam is the strategist who makes a battle plan. Why don't I get to see him do these kind of things in his actual job PB!! Drake "knows the most woodcraft" and will therefore make a good scout, both he and Liam can draw the bear away, and Maxwell's hitherto-unseen present is now their secret weapon. Bertrand isn't sure about this plan but goes along with it anyway.

• Everything goes as per plan, and Maxwell unleashes the "secret weapon": Bertrand's beloved Cavilieri Novanta 9S motorbike. There's a small hint about him having to perhaps give it away or sell it when his father, well, did whatever he did, and Maxwell somehow traced it and got it back. I'm kinda certain that bike may feature in Bertrand's flashback if he's having one next chapter. Bertrand is emotional AND ecstatic, learning again to control his bike and to enjoy being on it.

• The best part of the bear scene, is when he uses his Duke of Ramsford voice and gives the bear the ole what-for 😂

• Even the bear could not withstand the severe tongue lashing LMAO. Bertrand has the option of ending this...um...verbal duel by telling his furry opponent to tell his children he has been bested by a Beaumont.

• The bear slumps back home in shame, but Bertrand is worried about what other tests Drake has in store. 'Tests?' Drake says innocently.

•

You're forgetting the part where you constantly blamed Bertrand for everything, knowing full well your sister made her fair share of mistakes. Or the part where you pretty much sabotaged an investigation just to stroke your ego about Bertrand getting her pregnant. Or the part where you repeatedly made it clear that you thought he didn't deserve Savannah. Or the part where you made him cluck like a chicken just before he proposed, just so you could have your moment to gloat. Or the part where you would shoot looks at Bertrand if he even so much as hinted your sister wasn't perfect. Or the part where your aunt kept making snide remarks about him, disrespected him, and gave him a rough horse, while you and your mother and your sister stood by and watched. And NOW you claim that the only person doubting Bertrand is BERTRAND?

Yeah. Well...tldr:

• My gosh. The amount of retconning happening here is giving me a headache.

• Like...I like that Drake can be nicer to Bertrand now and that most of the tension is gone. But let's not act like Drake wasn't knowingly adding fuel to the fire before??

• Anyway, the boys tell Bertrand they are proud of him and proceed to sleep in their tents or wherever they've chosen to sleep for the night.

• PB gives Liam the very, very rare chance to remind Drake that he grew up in a palace. Doesn't mean much, but I'm fairly happy.

• FINALLY. Esther's home and I can finally play as her again!

• If you bought the serenading scene, there are a couple extra lines showing Savannah and Bertrand looking super super happy.

• There's an old man at the door.

• BARTHELEMY???

• Neither of his sons even look like him. And it reads as if Bertrand is less surprised about the possibility that Barthelemy is alive than Maxwell is. What's going on.

General Thoughts:

• Alright, so it looks like this week we will be exploring the Beaumont family history, looking into why Bertrand lost his zest for life and ended up taking care of the estate when all this time his father was actually alive, and how the Beaumonts wound up so poor. There had better be a substantial amount of Maxwell because he's not been getting a lot of attention this book.

• I'm wondering if Barthelemy's return will cause Bertrand and Maxwell's insecurities to rise again, and we'll probably need to help them through that or something.

• Looks like the next chapter might have a young!Maxwell scene or Maxwell's first diamond scene, or both? Idk. I can't say for sure because I don't exactly trust the team on these things.

• There were...elements of the chapter that were good, I'll give it that. Bertrand's got an interesting narrative voice. You can tell it's him by the way he uses titles, by the way he speaks when he is proud of something he has achieved, the language itself that is heavy in its bearing. The scenes were fun from what I've seen. The bonding was good. Problem was...in a better book this wouldn't have been so irritating and such a sign of how not into the most important things about this book the team is.

• Since they had the time and the ideas, why the hell was the buildup to this reveal so flimsy and half-baked? I mean if you're going to give Bertrand an entire freaking chapter, shouldn't you have been using at least that space to have Bertrand speak a little more about Barthelemy? Or build it up earlier? All this time we'd had to deal with Savannah's griping and complaining and Leona's snide remarks, we could have spent learning from Maxwell a little about his family.

• Usually buildup to a lot of these things happen through hints over chapters. But this? Little to none. Maybe like two half-sentences said just before the reveal. It's all kinds of shitty, and it's what happens when the most important Beaumont is a Walker.

• I'm also pretty surprised Liam doesn't get to apologize to Maxwell the way he does to Drake about the royal heir thing.

• So the Walker Ranch chapters started around Chapter 6, and might possibly end around Chapter 12 (with a detour to Auvernal around Chapter 9). That's 5 whole chapters + one more to tour the States itself.

• I know the original idea was to do an epilogue book revolving around the Walker ranch, so there's obviously a lot more clarity in those chapters than in the others. But that is still no excuse. If they were going to change track they should have been doing it properly. There's no excuse for this kind of selective laziness especially when it's been manifested countless times before.

• I also find the whole idea of revolving the epilogue book still pretty problematic. At the core of it that would be more of Drake and his family (which was already happening honestly) and it would mean they are absolutely front and center of everything. If the original idea was to focus fully on the Walkers...yikes.

• Yeah honestly, this chapter was pretty iffy for me. And I'm not exactly very enthusiastic about writing for it, or playing the next chapter.

Ok thoughts on Six on Broadway fresh out of the theater (2/16; 3PM show):

First and most importantly it totally lived up to the hype that I've been trying and failing to not build up in my head since last year. And this might be the hypest audience I've ever been in. Everyone in line was talking like they already knew what was up and I saw a good amount of people in like crowns and space buns and stuff. And every single time a Queen got burned during the show, everyone “OOOOOOH”-ed like we were on Wild ‘N Out or something. 

While I was in line, I’m 95% sure I saw Toby Marlow sprint past me and then return 10 minutes later with a slice of pizza. 

I got a pin and I asked the dude for an Aragon pin and he was like, "Is that queen of the castle?" Like lol buddy welcome to your first weekend working at Six.

Before the show starts, they play pop songs but I assume with the keyboard set to organ or harpsichord sounds. The two songs I recognized were Truth Hurts and Havana.

If you’re here looking for intel on the seating situation, I had seats second from the top and way to the left and I still saw everything fine (and I am not a tall person) so I wouldn’t worry too much about where you’re sitting.  

Like I said before, it's such a hype show. Like even if you've heard the soundtrack or seen the show through ~other means~ I promise you're not ready.

Right when the show starts, they project out these Tudor rose projections into the audience which is a nice touch. It’s such a nice looking set in general with the lights in the back and the band up on stage. I really like how highlighted the band members are in this show as compared to other shows I’ve seen. It’s a hard job and I bet it’s nice to get the props. 

“Live in Consort” is the best pun in Six because it’s a reach but said with such confidence that you have to give to to her. 

"Donde esta my crown?" is already a funny line but it’s even funnier when you picture two British 20-somethings conceiving of the line.

Any time Aragon waves at the crowd, which is a lot, she Princess Diary waves which I love. 

A lot of people have had a lot to say about the American accents and it's honestly ridiculous. Like, we're already taking these historical figures so out of their original context that could hardly be the straw that breaks the camel's back. Like, Kathrine Howard can sing a Brittney Spears song but it has to be in a British accent? Come on. And I actually think some songs (like No Way and Get Down in particular) sound a little more natural in an American accent considering the artists they’re taking inspiration from.

I can’t believe they do this show without a break. This is like 90 minutes of pure cardio. It’s, “I’m getting exhausted watching you,” choreo. They didn’t stagedoor after and, tbh, good. Go lay down before the 8pm show please. That’s 100% what I’d be doing.

I have heard the Anne Boleyn intro before but it’s a million times funnier watching her actively peace out as she’s being talked about and then take a selfie and quickly stash her phone before the song starts. 

They really scrubbed as many of the “mate”s out of the show as possible which I get but I feel like I would have just left them alone since it’s such a common British-ism that I feel like people know. 

I was led to believe that in “Wearing Yellow to a Funeral,” Anne is cut off from calling Aragon a massive bitch but lol that was def a hard C and not a B they stopped her after. 

“What a weekend,” is also a killer line imo. 

Still wild that Elizabeth is never mentioned in this show except indirectly when Anne says when she had a daughter Henry killed her. 

Heart of Stone has def grown on me since I first heard it and Abby Mueller is obv amazing but it’s still weird to hear after a song about how this dude literally decapitated someone (“You’ve got a good heart?” Jane, what? Citation needed) and I think it’s good that it’s basically undercut immediately by the, “Severed head,” line by Anne. Also, I lowkey spent most of the song preparing for the cut to Haus of Holbein. 

I was not prepared for the cut to Haus of Holbein. 

Literally, I could not wipe the stupid grin off my face during the entirety of Cleves’ pre-HoH speech because I knew exactly the nonsense that was about to happen and it still surpassed my expectations. 

If I didn’t already know that Boleyn’s line was, “the whole of the Holy Roman Empire,” there is no way I would have understood any of that. The German accents during that scene truly do sound like they were told, “Do literally whatever,” and it’s so funny. 

Cleves’ throne rising out of the stage so she can sit in it is such a Moment.  

Brittney Mack’s operatic riff or whatever it’s called during the slow-mo part of Get Down is so, so, so fill the room amazing. Man it was so good. Also, I 100% did not realize that on the “take my fur” line, they breakaway rip her little jacket off and it’s this cool sparkly bodice piece under. Based on audience reaction, neither did they. 

I feel like everyone always talks about Boleyn’s energy in this show and they should because they’re right but--speaking for the Broadway cast--she’s for sure second to Cleves in terms of raw energy. 

During the roast, I think to Aragon, Howard strokes her cheek with the back of her hand which is super funny, as is her shaking her fists at the sky after the, “When will justice be served,” line to Jane.

Not a Surprise: I also Wasn’t Ready for All You Wanna Do. 

AYWD is the song I was most curious to see audience reaction to (w/ HoH being a close second) because, you know, it’s an ostensibly fun song except that it’s awful. But I think the mood of the audience kinda followed Howard’s. When she was joking around, everyone kinda felt like they had permission to joke around too--like there’s a part in the choreo that happens more than once where they put her hands on her and she shrugs them off and the first time it happened there was a laugh but when it happened again during the third verse when she’s clearly Over It and dancing in a really rote and exhausted way, no laugh.

(Sidenote: The juxtaposition of Cleves and Howard--arguably the most and least successful Queens--is always to interesting to me. The placement of such a “I’m so Dope,” song next to a, “My life was trash,” song. And, now having seen it, there’s a part in the Get Down choreo where all the other queens have their hands all over Cleves in a hyping her up kinda way and, as, in contrast, Howard is getting touched constantly in AYWD and it’s Bad.)

(Double sidenote: During verse four of AYWD, there’s a part where everyone walks in front of Howard and they duck so they don’t block her and Andrea like basically didn’t duck at all. It was lowkey super funny). 

Anyway, the breakdown was rough. By which I mean extremely good but rough to listen to. Like, I know it’s a part of the song so I knew it was coming but I’m so used to the studio version that listening to her full on sob through the last chorus was A Lot. You could feel the air sucked out of the room. Huge props to Sam Pauly.

So, iirc, in the West End version of the show, post Howard’s song is the fight which dissolves into literal hair pulling/having to break people up. In this version, it doesn’t got that far. They get to comparing miscarriages and the Cleves breaks it up and tells Parr it’s her turn. Then, she gets an intro to an upbeat sounding song that we never actually hear because she can’t bring herself to sing it. Then she goes into the same (or at least a similar) speech about, “We shouldn’t do this,” which leads into IDNYL.

When Katherine does the, “Katherine de Valois, I mean I don’t know,” line, Cleves looks at her like, “Bitch what?”

When Boleyn gives the, “Everyone notices that Jane can’t dance,” line, I didn’t catch Jane’s reaction like I wanted to because Aragon immediately breaks into a sidebar with her like, “Right? That’s totally true.”

During Jane’s verse in Six, everyone is actually pretty down with the Tudor Von Trapps line and then she says Royaling Stones and loses everyone. 

I didn’t realize that they did the same couples choreo during the Six that they do for Ex-Wives but I like that a lot. Very circular. 

It is extremely hard to not sing during a show like Six, especially once you’ve conditioned yourself for the past six or so month to start spitting out lyrics the second you hear any of these songs start. I really really hope they have Sing-A-Long tix at some point because I am willing to shell out for that and I think a lot of people in that audience would have as well.

Some random dude at a light say me holding my playbills and asked how I liked the show because he’d good things which, if an omen for the show’s prospects, is a good one. Opening weekend is probably not a fantastic gauge of show longevity because of course all of the hypest fans would be out now but if it can keep up this energy then man they’re gonna have a hit (well, a further hit).

I HAVE NO NAMES OF MY OWN. -- I thought she was this certain female artist, because the voice kinda seemed familair (sounded like hers to me), but none of the clues and other things seemed to fit. And after checking the clues it seems to confirm it cannot be her, cause nothing matches. Also... to me she doesn’t sound like any of the singers I thoughts she could be based on the clues, so... I havent actually figured her out...

I think people online are correct, and it’s a certain “reality star” (gramophone = reference to her dad being a sound engineer on a well-known past TV show) Though I am considering a few more options - mostly other reality stars/youtubers/family members of celebs... particularily one name. If my guess here is correct, then just like Llama, she would have a connection to a previous TMS contestant...but since I am not that familiar with her singing voice, I cannot be sure. But she has lost family members in the past few years, she has been in a media scandal, and you can even explain the australia thing kinda... so...until I hear more of her, I’ve got one name mainly in mind. Joey McIntyre  PS. I tried connecting the voice to any boy-bands (of 1990s & 2000s), but I coukdnt. Even after some “research” - listening to each possible candidate...and IMO it’s none of them. The voices dont match, the heights doesn’t match---But it did sound like someone, who for me was a one-hit-wonder. Yeah, I only know that one song (and one more) from him... but voice seemed familiar.

The three past TMS masks shown are all animals that are parts of  names of existing football teams: Ravens, Eagles, Lions. Meaning he is an athlete & specifically plays american football (NFL) 

The Lincoln quote translates to “87 years ago...”, so number 87 is the clue here. This could be a reference to player No. 87. 

He has had a very succesful career in his own field (sports). Singing is not his main job.

IF the voice-overs were done later, not during initial filming, then it’s possible that “smash” relates to the person smashing a lego-statue of a TV host during 2019/2020 New Years. Which in itself was supposed to be about his famous “Gronk Spike” during football games. 

A tiger (albeit “regular”, not white) was one of the characters & costumes + name of the sports team in the Katy Perry video “Swish Swich”, where this athlete also appeared. 

The Golden (Golden Mask) trophe - most likely a reference to his many wins (the trophees he/his team has won)

GUESSES: 

Rob Gronkowski (Gronk, athlete, 198cm) = 99% certain it’s him 

Because of the height alone (seems to be around/almost 2m = 6 feet 5) there are not that many possibilities at all. Even if we don’t listen to that voice or consider the clues. Based on height alone it can basiclaly be only one of these names: Dave Bautista (198cm); The Rock (196cm); Hulk Hogan (201cm); Tyler Perry (196cm); Brad Garrett (204cm); Joe Manganiello (196cm); Jeff Goldblum (194cm); Jason Mamoa (193cm); Tom Brady (193cm)..or the likes...

Even other possible names, like the ones listed by the panel, are not valid guesses, because of their height: John Cena for example is actually only 185cm tall. Also... several of these tall men are bigger/more muscular, so that makes it even easier to determine the name based on only the physical appeance...without even listening to the clues.

premise: ten years after her explosive split with her seven best friends, Song Aeja is back in her hometown with a goal and a looming deadline over her head. her wish? to have one more happy memory with her friends. however, her deadline only seems to grow closer and bigger. 

a/n: hi!! so i’ve had this idea for awhile, and it only started to grow into something after i watched the “LOVE YOURSELF: highlight reel”. please tell me what you think, and if i should continue with this!! **this story does contain mention of death, as the main character is diagnosed with cancer.

I never realized how many memories I carried about this town until I stepped off the train.

As my feet touch the platform, I am overwhelmed with past images, seeing my younger self run across the same platform, seven familiar boys on my heels, laughing and screaming. I allow a small smile as I reminisce in what I consider my good days. Shaking myself from old thoughts, I grab my suitcase from underneath the train, and make my way through the station, dialing a number I never thought I would call again.

I lift the phone to my ear, and I listen to the ringing with bated breath.

“Hello, you’ve reached Kim Nam-joon. To whom am I speaking to?” I allow a small laugh at how formal he sounded, and I could feel my nervousness fade.

“Never thought I would hear the day Nam-joon would actually speak formally,” I allow myself to tease him about his habit when he was younger to always forget formality.

I hear his breath catch on the other end. “A-Aeja-yah?” I smile lightly.

“Never thought you would hear my voice again, huh?” It’s painful to speak out loud, but with the way things ended, it’s not false.

“I never want to talk to you guys again!”

I shake myself from the old memories, instead remembering the reason I called. “Hey, listen, I know it’s late and I probably don’t deserve it, but I’m stuck at the old train station, and I don’t have a ride. Do you think you could hook a girl up?” I chuckle at the end, hoping to lighten the conversation.

It’s a while before he answers me, but I’m more surprised to hear the start of his engine before his voice. “I’m on my way. I’ll be there in fifteen minutes.” We hang up, and I slip my phone in my pocket, looking around at the citylife after I do so.

I catch sight of the faded graffiti on the side of the station, and before I know it, I’m walking towards it. I run my hands along the letters, done in sloppy English, remembering that night clearly. A tear slips out when I remember what happened only a week after, and I hurriedly wipe it away, instead turning to face the old buildings.

After admiring the landscape for a bit, I see an old truck pull up into the roundabout, and I grab my suitcase, making my way towards it. A tall man steps out, and I’m shocked to see the brown hair atop his head. A giggle escapes as I remember all the crazy colors our hair used to be. I tug on my own, grimacing when I remember the thinness.

Nam-joon is looking at me in shock, and it’s me who says something first.

“Do I at least get a hug?” I giggle nervously. I am suddenly enveloped in surprisingly muscular arms, and not long after the hug is given, I feel my shoulder dampen. I pull away to look at Nam-joon’s face.

“Aww, are you crying?” I tease, wiping away his tears as I do. “You don’t need to cry, Joonie-oppa.” This sentence seems to spur even more tears, and I frantically try to fix the problem I caused. “No, no! Don’t cry!” I hurriedly try to find a spare tissue in my backpack, but I’m stopped by a low giggle.

“Aeja-yah, it’s okay,” Nam-joon wipes at his eyes. “I’m just… you’ve been gone ten years. I can’t believe you’re actually here, in front of me.”

I wince, feeling my chest constrict at the mention of my absence. I take a deep breath in hopes of relieving the tension. “I know, Joonie-oppa… but I’m here now, aren’t I?” I offer a sheepish smile, and Nam-joon laughs in response. He grabs my suitcase, and throws it into the bed of his truck, before opening the passenger door for me. “Such a gentleman,” I tease and he rolls his eyes at me.

Nam-joon gets in the driver’s seat, and starts the old car. I shake my head in awe.

“I can’t believe this dinosaur of a thing still works,” I say, running a hand over the dashboard, seeing imprints of shoe prints all over.

“Well, after that night, when you left, Jin-hyung left not soon after. He offered me the car, free, and I took it,” Nam-joon explains. “It’s one of the only things I still have from those years, so I do my best to keep it in working condition.” Soon, familiar scenery starts flying by the window. I catch sight of the old diner, and I’m grateful for the ability to change the subject.

“Han-ssi still runs that old diner?” I ask, laughing a little. Nam-joon cracks a small smile, nodding.

“Not just Han-ssi,” he replies, “but Dujun-ah as well.”

My mouth drops. “You’re kidding! That old bully from junior high?” Nam-joon nods as a form confirmation.

For awhile, the car ride is silent, filled only with the rumble of his truck and the quiet music over the radio. I can tell Nam-joon is bursting at the seams with questions, and I save him the painful wait.

“You must be wondering why I came back, huh?” I say, keeping my gaze on the window. I don’t wait for a response before continuing. “To be quite honest, I don’t really have a reason.” That you should know of, I silently add. “I guess… I just wanted to come back home.” I bite my lip at the lie, thinking of the real reason I came back.

“I’m so sorry, Ms. Song…” The doctor trails off on the other line. “The results came back positive, and more aggressive than we could have ever predicted. You have T-cell prolymphocytic leukemia. You don’t have much more than a year left.”

I stealthily wipe at my eyes to hide the growing tears, and instead try to think of a way to change the subject. Nam-joon beats me to the punch.

“So, where are you staying?” He asks.

I fall into silence, having to think of my answer for a second. “Oh! That hotel next to the old bakery, the one run by the ahjumma who always gave us free cupcakes.” It takes Nam-joon awhile to remember, but his eyes light up when he does.

“Oh! You mean Heaven’s Treats?” I snap my fingers at him.

“Bingo! I’m staying at the hotel right next to it,” I give a small smile, and Nam-joon bites his lip as he thinks.

“How… how about you stay with me?” He offers up, uncertain. “It… it can be pretty lonely, and I wouldn’t mind getting to spend more time with you, for however long you’re here.”

I think it over, realizing the benefits of the offer. “Yeah, I’d love to!” Nam-joon gives me a happy smile, and makes a u-turn.

We sit in silence for a few minutes, before I ask the question that’s been eating away at my mind.

“So… what happened to the others?” I ask, hesitantly.

Nam-joon lets out a sigh. “To be honest, I only know where Ji-min and Ho-seok are, and that’s because they still talk to me.” I grimace quietly. “They actually live down the street from me, and run a small dance studio together. The other four… I haven’t seen them in ten years.” Nam-joon sends me a side-eye look. “What… what happened to you? Where did you go?”

I run a tired hand through my hair. “I… I think that’s a story best told later.” I flash an apologetic smile. “Sorry, Joonie-oppa.” He sighs, shrugging.

“I kind of expected an answer like that,” he says as we pull up to a small one-story house. “Welcome to my humble abode.” We exit the car, and he grabs my suitcase, wheeling it inside for me.

I enter the house before him, and I’m overwhelmed by the smell of gasoline and candy.  

“Sorry about the smell,” Nam-joon enters soon after me. “I’m still working at that gas station, so most of my clothes smell like gasoline.”

I wave him off. “It’s fine, really.” I take a moment to look around, noticing a few pictures of our group strewn throughout the living room, and my breath catches when I catch sight of a certain picture.

It’s of the eight of us, by our little hangout. The background is of stone walls and graffiti, and we all look like we’re mid cracking up. I smile slightly as I remember that day, memories flashing before my eyelids. I see Seok-jin with his stupid little video camera, and Tae-hyung toting his bag of spray paint. Next is Yoon-gi and Ji-min tusseling lightly on the ground, with Nam-joon chiding them from the side. Jeong-guk flashes through my eyes, the image of him trying to casually throw his arm around me with Ho-seok always there to throw it back off. I can practically hear the conversation behind the photo. Seok-jin had told some stupid joke that we thought was way funnier than it was, and his video camera had captured the perfect picture.

“Hard to believe that was actually ten years ago.”

Nam-joon startles me, and I fumble with the picture frame in the process. Once I catch myself, I nod with a sigh. “Yeah… and now we’re adults.” I set the frame back on the table. “Jinnie-oppa turns 29 this year, right?” He gives me a nod, and I shake my head in disbelief. “It really only feels like yesterday.”

There’s a silence between the two of us for a bit. “Let me show you to your room,” he takes my hand, and we make our way down a hallway. He opens the door of a room almost at the end of the hall, and I follow him inside.

There’s a queen bed in the center of the room, with a dresser across from it, a television sitting on top of that. I walk in, pulling my suitcase along with me, and sit down on the bed. “Thank you, again, for letting me stay here. It’ll be lot easier for me.” I let out a small chuckle. Nam-joon cocks his head at my odd wording, but lets it slide.

“Well… seeing as how it’s late, I’m probably going to hit the hay myself. I’ll see you in the morning, ok, Aeja-ya?” Nam-joon kisses the top of my head, and starts to walk towards the door; however, he stops just before the entrance. “And… it’s really good to see you again.” He walks out without letting me reply, quietly shutting the door behind him.

I flop onto the bed, thoughts running rampant in my head. I roll over to the edge of the bed, and I grab my phone from my pocket, opening it to the notes app. I click open the only note I have in my phone, labeled “END GOAL.”

I jot down three names, and write beside them.

KIM NAM-JOON: still living in the town

JUNG HO-SEOK: still living in the town, works at a dance studio

PARK JI-MIN: still living in the town, works at a dance studio

I close the app with a sigh, but not before glancing at the words written at the end of the note.

END GOAL: to have a happy memory with everyone just one last time

I take my fingernail between my teeth, wondering if I’ve gotten myself in too far deep with my wish. I shake my head to rid myself of negative thoughts, and reach over to turn off the lamp beside the bed.

Lying in the darkness, I can feel sleep start to take over my body, the long day at last getting to me. I close my eyes, and drift off into sleep, thoughts of old friends running around my head.

Well, the year is nearly over, and Sunshine Season 2 is finally here. Can you believe it’s been two and a half years since Sunshine was announced?

For those of you who don’t recognise me, I used to go by @mikimikimii​ but there’s a change of username. It’s still Miki, don’t worry! Last season I recapped some Sunshine episodes outlining the good, the bad, and the gay. I’d like to do the same here!

Episode 1 leaves me with mixed expectations - our production budget has seen even more of an increase, and the backgrounds look genuinely beautiful this time around. We’ve got KanaMari, ChikaRiko, and par for the course of Love Live, angst.

Let’s get into it.

I told you it was pretty!

The episode starts with Chika reflecting on what exactly it is that makes people shine - note that, as per last season’s decision, this is no longer about following Muse, which is such a good decision. A lot of issue I took with last season stemmed from the fact that the show could not let go of Muse. I have enough trouble with that myself, thanks :v.

A paper plane flies around this very pretty light source, and eventually towards it, whilst Chika tries to chase after it and falls into nothingness. I really have no idea what the paper plane’s significance is - that their world is fragile? I...don’t know.

Regardless, this scene builds up some of the feeling the rest of the episode tries to capitalise on - the feeling of being just short of reaching your goal.

And the meme queen herself decides to break the 4th wall, because why not.

Chika realises that she’s late for school as she wakes up from her oh-so-symbolic dream, and walks in to have Mari declare to the entirety of the school that she’s late. Which is only like, 30 people maximum, but still. 

Interesting word choice, here. Too late are words that become meaningful as the episode goes on, but here, Mari delivers them cheerfully. Unintentional (likely) or foreshadowing (unlikely)? Who knows.

Oh, and in an almost forgettable fashion, we find out that yes, Aqours really didn’t make it past prelims. None of them seem all too upset about it, though - after all, they went there to have fun. In Chika’s words, to shine. So no harm done.

The next Love Live is announced, and of course, we have an extended sequence where everyone waits for Chika to say that yes, we’re going to enter Love Live again. Chika harks back to their pivotal decision back in Season One - they want to shine as themselves.

On another note, why is Love Live twice a year? I know this was a problem back in Muse days, but like. Seriously. This seems like an annual event, not...biannual. The plot demands what it demands, I suppose.

Some pointless fun facts:

There are 12 first years.

There are 24 second years.

There are 36 third years.

That makes for a total of 72 students, presuming no absences.

That is a very tiny school.

The opening sequence isn’t super memorable, honestly. I did like that it was a lot more dynamic that in previous seasons, but that can just be attributed to the the ramped up production budget.

Good god, this show is pretty.

We continue with Aqours practising on the roof, whilst Chika stares wordlessly at a poster of the upcoming open house, where Aqours intends to perform to incite new members to join. This is a leftover plot thread from last season, and as much as I hate that this is a repeated plot thread from the original Love Live series, it isn’t entirely out of left field - as seen before, this is a Very Tiny School.

Please don’t break her, Kanan.

Dia is the one to propose performing, whilst everyone else is thinking about the next Love Live. Dia’s way of thinking here is a very, very necessary thing here. I have no doubt the rest of Aqours would get stuck daydreaming about things far in the future instead of focussing on the now. God bless Dia Kurosawa.

However, the show quickly brings out the angst, as Mari gets a mysterious phonecall, and she does not look happy about it. Usually the center of Aqour’s shenanigans, this time she’s a little removed. It’s a different side of Mari, and one that I really hoped we’d get to see, based on the very first Aqours PV. Back then, Mari was portrayed to be a bit of a loner in the crowd, and that’d be a really interesting trait to see get developed here.

One thing I do really like is getting to see more Aqours parents! We got to see a ton through the course of the original Love Live series, and it’s been a bit odd that we only got to meet Chika’s mother very briefly in the original series. It does a lot to humanise the girls to see them in their own habitats, with their families. Yohane in particular, considering her vivid online life.

This entire scene is a little weird - we get some fun development with Yoshiko from Riko’s interaction with her parents, but other than that there’s nothing new. Aside from Kanan being the only one to notice Mari is standing angstily at the end of the little pier. Are the other seven members of Aqours blind? Come on guys :v.

I suppose you could argue it’s because of how divided into year groups Aqours currently are, but Dia certainly should have noticed.

Apparently the right way to shine is to leap off a pier in your uniform.

Chika monologues a bit about what performing at the prelims taught her - what it means to shine. Then, in a callback to the previous season, we get Chika running off the pier at full speed with a rotating camera, Susume Tomorrow-style, to boot.

However, this scene doesn’t really...work. It doesn’t fit in with the rest of the mood of the episode, or Chika and Riko’s next conversation.

Afterwards, Riko catches her just barely, in a throwback to when Chika thought Riko was about to jump, back in Season 1 Episode 1. Nowadays, Riko has found what she needs - Chika - and this time it’s Chika who’s searching for something.

I’d like to point out Mari’s body positioning here - hunched in on herself, vulnerable, which leads up to what’s coming, as Mari puts down the phone and once again, sees the light flashing on the pier.

I didn’t like the use of the light on the pier, honestly - back when it was used in Season 1, it was a painful yet heartwarming memory of their childhood, used in an attempt to rekindle their romance friendship. Here, there is no meaning other than “I need to talk to you”, which could just as easily be communicated via text. They have each other’s numbers. The light on the pier means something a little different, I think. It’s a waste to burn out the impact a scene like this could have had if placed later in the season, during an emotional high.

Kanan, in a stellar turnaround from last season, cuts the bullcrap.

Kanan confronts Mari about what’s been upsetting her - and if Mari’s determined to stand on the end of piers and be angsty, so be it, says Kanan, we’ll talk here.

This is by far the funniest thing to ever emerge from Mari Ohara’s mouth. The only way this could be funnier is if she said it in Japanese instead of English.

Mari continues to be evasive, trying at first to pretend there isn’t a problem, then deflecting with a weight comment.

Seems like you lost a shoe there, Mari.

Which leads us to this, which I imagine makes any KanaMari shipper very happy, just in case you had any doubt about which ship was going to be teased more than anything else. This is excuse to disprove Mari’s lie about gaining weight, which implies that Kanan bridal carries Mari enough to know there’s a difference or not in how much she weighs. That’s gay, my friends.

However, despite the fade-away shot as Mari cries into Kanan’s arms, things still feel rushed. Kanan barely has time to say Mari’s name before the scene cuts away, diminishing the impact of this scene even further, which is a shame.

We cut to the girls in their club room, where the third years vanish without a word. Kanan points out that Dia should know what’s going on, because yes, yet again, Dia has been left out of something very important concerning her supposed two best friends.

Something I really hope this seasons fixes is the disconnect between Dia and her peers - she was the only one to remain at Uranohoshi, whilst Mari studied abroad and Kanan took time off of school to help out with her dad’s shop. It must have been very lonely, and the show has yet to account for this. Currently, though, the prospects don’t look fantastic.

And finally, after thirteen minutes of dancing around the issue, the truth comes out: the open day will be cancelled, and the school will be closed. No second chances.

The way the show presents this isn’t great - it’s not immediately apparent that the lack of open day means the school is closing for good, and it wasn’t until Mari said herself that they would no longer be accepting new students that I understood why everyone was so upset.

And then, sort of subtly, Mari drops the not-bomb that is actually the focus theme of this episode: having fun, and trying to shine in your own way, is not enough to save the school.

It’s an unfair thought, really - the task may have been impossible from the start. Muse had the advantage of being in a location where there were already lots of students. Aqours does not. Regardless, the issue stands: they were not enough, and they did not achieve their secondary goals. Because, remember, their big goal was to shine in their own way, to have fun.

But that doesn’t feel so good now, because you can’t have your cake and eat it, too. Muse centered on one purpose in the first season - saving the school, nothing else. It wasn’t until their second season where they realised - “Hey, we don’t actually have a reason to exist anymore. Let’s just be idols for ourselves - for fun.”

It’s very weird that the show is framing this as a failure, because by the nature of how the first season turned out, they weren’t trying to win. They weren’t trying to save the school by being the best. They just wanted to be idols, in their own way.

This whole theme of the episode feels almost off, because I want to say, well, what did you expect?

Here, we’re told that Mari has been working super hard behind the scenes to try to save the school. Which is great! I love knowing that Mari is very hardworking behind closed doors. The problem? We never, ever see any of that. Eli we knew was hardworking because we saw her constantly trying to plead with Principal Minami to take action. We saw her write speeches, we saw her constantly doing things. Mari we haven’t seen doing anything like this. It’s a bad of telling, not showing, and whilst it doesn’t feel dishonest to how Mari could be, I can’t bring myself to truly believe it, either.

Then, Chika goes home, and sees all the paper cranes that her classmates had made for Aqours for the prelims. And so it sinks in further: what they did wasn’t enough.

Riko continues to be inexplicably hilarious. That’s such a mood.

Something nice I’d like to point out is the reenforcement of the beach as Chika and Riko’s place. It’s where they have their important talks, where they can find each other in need, and where they met. Similarly, the end of the pier also holds meaning for Kanan and Mari. It reallys adds to the depth of the relationship between these characters. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear them refer to it as “our place”.

Riko rehashes their goal from last season to Chika - and Chika rejects it, completely. Riko acts goofy, to cheer Chika up. It’s very sweet - “You’re smiling again.”

But it’s not enough - Chika goes home and she’s still upset. Because, they weren’t enough. They didn’t save the school, and it’s over.

And then, after moping on her bed, Chika runs to the school, and yells her heart out. And the rest of Aqours is there, too. There was a scene like this in the original anime, too - “I guess we were all on the same wavelength.”

It feels odd here, I will admit, but Chika finds everyone waiting for her, as if to say, the answer was obvious to everyone but you.

I will admit, the music here got me pumped up.

But Chika’s right - they haven’t really done anything yet. Sure, they got to prelims, but not past it - there’s no need to give up when they have time and a goal to strive for.

Let’s strive for a miracle!

And so, Aqours reaffirm their goal: to struggle as hard as they can to save their school, no matter what. To strive for a miracle. Zero to One isn’t enough.

Well, that’s that.

I won’t go over the ED because it’s like, 7:30am and I still haven’t slept.

Overall, though, mixed feelings. The anime is certainly even prettier than last season, but I feel like it wasted itself showing a few too many of its cards. However, it’s only the first episode, so things can only get better.

I would really, really love to see some more focus put onto the Kurosawa sisters this sister. Ruby got shafted in her focus episode when Hanamaru usurped her as the true star, and Dia has been shunted out of the spotlight time and time again. I’d also really like to see some interaction in between the year groups, too.

I’ve been seeing posts from friends that there are people saying that philinda came out of nowhere. I find that shit hilarious. and to make it a bit funnier, some also said that Melinda Qiaolian May opening up to Phillip J. Coulson is out of character. Interesting.

So, here’s me shoving philinda down your throat because apparently that’s what season 4 does. I will not even be going to put ‘read more’ to this to shove it further. deeper. Until you gag.

Anyway..

Them..

Before we actually start, just so you know, Phil Coulson and Melinda May had been in each other’s history. That’s a fact.

We first saw Philinda back in season 1 during the Pilot episode. Melinda had been briefed about the group that Phil had been assembling. Words like these had been exchanged:

“and you don’t need me” “I do, cause we’ll be running ourselves, making the ops, making the calls...”

Words that somehow showed that they already knew each other back in the day. What they were to each other wasn’t clear for us then. Phil was also reassuring Melinda that they will not have a combat op but technically, it was inevitable because by next episode, they encountered one, in which Phil Coulson specifically visited Melinda in the cockpit to apologized because it wasn’t supposed to be that. And so, we found out that she wasn’t just a pilot considering Grant Ward knew her—heard of her, whatever. She’s a Legend. Even the Fitzsimmons heard things about her. (see: Season 1 Episode 2) It was something odd because why would a freaking legend be in administration? Turns out, Phil Coulson knew the story but well not all of it. (See: Season 1 Episode 9) Boundaries and all. (see: Season 2 Episode 20).

Phil described her as always quiet, warm, fearless in the different way, getting in trouble, pulling pranks, thought rules are made to broken. (See: Season 1 Episode 9) We’ve seen those traits back in Melinda episode on season 2 and in The Man Behind SHIELD episode in our current season, season 4.  In which by the way, they’re basically a huge part of each other there.

In Melinda episode, we’ve seen that Philinda were already partners there. Melinda was married to Andrew, and they were partners. Phil was there when Melinda walked out of that building that scarred her. Phil was there to tell her to let the girl go. Melinda there was all smiley, she’s different from the Melinda that we’ve seen in past episodes. The Melinda in this was playful and impatient. She still is but it’s more obvious.

In Man Behind SHIELD episode, we’ve seen snippets of their relationship before Bahrain and before their respective relationships. Melinda even teased Phil about their first undercover job where they were married couple. In which it seems as though, this particular undercover is Sausalito that they talked about back in 2x04, where Melinda said she just took the dance pre-requisite to graduate and Phil said she wasn’t thrilled when they were assigned in Sausalito.

And then, Bahrain happened. Phil died and he was resurrected so now we are watching this damn show and you obviously meet your favs, in my case, those dumb idiots called Phil Coulson and Melinda May.

Season 1 Episode 17: Turn Turn Turn. This episode is one of the most pivotal moments for the fandom. While patching her up—in which apparently, he’s the only one who can patch her up (see S01E13) – in the episode was where the lines that are carved in every philinda fans head came from. 

“You mean a lot to me. A lot.” 

Let’s talk about “I didn’t do it for Fury, I did it for you, to protect you, I— “line first. Fury may have ordered her to do what has to be done because Fury knew that they’re inseparable. Fury trusted Melinda for Phil’s safety but he also trusted her to make the right call and he knew that Melinda will always have his back. However, Melinda didn’t go back to field because Fury asked him to but because she wanted to. Maybe there’s guilt since she’s supposed to be part of Avengers initiative (see Melinda Episode S02E17) but Bahrain happened, she wasn’t there to protect him and he died. But noticed the “I—“part there and how she stopped and changed it to “You mean a lot to me.” and to even emphasized the point she repeated “a lot” If that doesn’t tell you something then I don’t know what to say really. And to help you more, Phil did say on season 4 this line: “Her name is Melinda May and she means everything to me.”·

FZZT Philinda End Scene, Melinda asked Phil a simple question before she said a line that engraved on every Philinda Shipper. She asked him this:               

 “Do you know how long it has taken me?” Phil nodded. 

That scene was just a small scene compared to the big “The point of these things is to remind us that... There is no going back, there's only moving forward. You feel different because you are different.” But that one scene actually show that Melinda had always been opened to Phil, in terms of feelings. Phil is her constant. We found out in Bahrain how things got shitty. And shitty is an understatement.  If you’re going to point out another type of openness? Have you watched the episode where she called him “rusty?” or that part where she actually smirked when she said she wanted the solitude? They even had a conversation in which Phil is the only one speaking while she’s doing tai-chi… like it’s the most normal thing to do for them. How open exactly are you talking about? I mean, Melinda had always been like that to Phil. Her LMD however, had no chill. 😉  

You see, they are also each other’s driving force. Not to mention, they didn’t know each other in the framework but they immediately trust each other.

What they have is loyalty, trust, friendship and deeper understanding of each other. There are signs all over the place that points out that they have something for each other. Have you seen May’s face when she thought Phil’s gone? Have you watched the sigh of relief every fucking time she figured out that he’s not dead? Where were you when Phil said “it’s like you never left?”, “i lost my right hand too?” or that moment when he prioritized her than the president? It’s been there all along. Out of nowhere? yeah right...

And really, no matter what points I say in this, in which, I basically missed probably more than half of it… but yeah, It’ll be hard to notice their subtlety back in season 1, 2, and 3 especially when you’re too focused on something else and not them. Only this time they were given this huge amount of acknowledgement because they are both finally healing.
