AAAAAYYYYY WE FINALLY MADE IT!!!!!
Six years later, and Lost Souls is in it's final chapter (and will be completed before the year ends YIPPEEE!!!) and I realized that I hadn't made good on something I said I would do: frequent comparisons between appearances of the characters to show how my art has changed and improved throughout the comic's run. Completely forgot. Oops...
So I figured what better way to celebrate how far we've come than to visually SHOW how different the start and the end are! Here we go! (LONG POST AHEAD!)
PROLOGUE
Not much to say about the first chapter--other than it shows its age. 💀 At the time I really struggled with contrast and color theory, because everything is muddy and blends together.
I found all the Fazbears challenging to draw, but I especially remember struggling with Chica the most SOLEY because of her beak--I was having difficulty wrapping my head around making it look the way I wanted it to. Once I let myself treat Chica's beak less like an actual beak and more like a pair of extra thick lips she became one of the easier characters to draw.
CHAPTER ONE
Its so weird seeing where my blood children started and where they ended up design-wise. Cody's hair is a lot more tamer in style in these first chapters, and it took a while to get the hang of how I wanted to depict Bridget's wavy hair.
CHAPTER TWO
UGGHH MORE MUDDY COLORS GET IT AWAY GET IT AWAY
Back during this chapter the fog looked more like actual fog than a manifestation of all the animal souls Gold had collected and tenuously tied together with sheer force of will. All I can say is I guess I was still figuring out the art direction I was going.
CHAPTER THREE
I was REALLY proud how I subverted expectations by not letting Cody or Bridget faint upon meeting the Fazbears. XD
I also did this dumb thing where I would block the farther limbs in shadow to try and save time (you can see it most notably on Halo and Bonnie's ears.)
This did not in fact save much time and ended up looking kinda dumb and making people think characters were missing limbs. >_<
CHAPTER FOUR
Character designs are notably more consistent.
Here was where I dropped using Photoshop Elements 7 for my drawing and used Krita. I still used Photoshop for finishing details etc.
CHAPTER FIVE & SIX
If I had to pin a chapter in which character designs were pretty much solidified, it would be these chapters.
CHAPTER SEVEN
The only major characters here are Cody and Regan.
I made this chapter during the height of 2020. So naturally I was in the throws of a MAJOR depressive episode.
I took a lot of short cuts in an attempt to just get this chapter DONE. Don't know if it's noticeable or not, but yeah it was rough.
I didn't include the Bidibabs and Minireenas because there's too darn many if them, and they're not always grouped together for the most effective comparison shots.
CHAPTER EIGHT & NINE
Grouped because eight wasn't particularly noteworthy.
Other than it's where I made the switch to Clip Studio Paint.
I had experimented with it when I made the prior Crybaby chapters and fell in love with the program before I even finished the free trial.
CHAPTER TEN
Ooh I was SO anxious for this chapter, because here was when the story would reach the point of no return--it was literally all downhill from here and I wouldn't be able to just drop the comic if I lost interest.
(But I didn't! )
Point being, lots of anxiety surrounding this chapter.
CHAPTER ELEVEN
Here is officially past the event horizon. At this point I had no idea how much farther I had to go in spite of the fact it was the start of the final night.
CHAPTER TWELVE
We officially enter the labyrinth here, and it is here where I officially decided I HATE the color green.
I really don't know what it was, but there wasn't many things I could do to make the characters stand out from the sheer GREEN of the vicinity, and it muddied up a lot of the colors of the characters.
Thankfully I had more experience under my belt to balance it all out (I hope 😬)
CHAPTER THIRTEEN
More green.
So much green.
CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Which is why when Cody's group went into the mirror maze I switched it up and went more aquamarine/turquoise to make it more bearable for me.
Making the light emit from the glow-in-the-dark floor panels was a happy accident--I wad playing around with layer modes and the Add Dodge (Glow) layer mode in CSP caused an interesting effect that I took and ran.
Markiplier cameos here. (And dies. Sorry Mark.)
CHAPTER FIFTEEN
The double uploads started here and OH MY GOD I can't believe I managed to survive it. I really put my pedal to the metal here, and I came out on top!
(It was a race against myself really but HOT DAMN I WAS ON FIYA.)
Side note: this chapter went through SO MANY rough drafts guys it's not even funny.
The vibes weren't jiving, the pacing was all skiddly-wompus, and at one point the chapter was FIFTY PAGES LARGE (HELL NAW)

CHAPTER SIXTEEN
This was the hardest chapter to finish, if you can believe it.
It took the longest production-wise, because after SIX YEARS of non-stop comic work I was definitely burned out. Thank god I had already solidified the script and thumbnails beforehand because with that guide rail in place I could drag myself across the finish line by my fingernails because if there was ONE THING I DIDN'T WANT IT WAS A FRICKIN RUSHED ENDING. >:[
(Burned by too many unsatisfying webtoon/webcomic endings that basically went "and we lived happily ever after 😌")
Visually this is my favorite chapter. I love how the colors turned out, and all the characters felt truly "mine."
And that's that!
Man I started writing a whole paragraph and I realized that I should PROBABLY save it for the Afterword, when the comic is well and truly finished. So I'll hold off on that big ol' schpiel until then, but I will say:

Holy shit I was working on this since late October, and I'm the most proud I've ever been of a picture I've drawn?
Details and graffiti transcriptions below the cut! 'Cause I worked on that shit for like three entire days, and I'll be damned if I don't show off some environmental storytelling word crimes.
So, first we have a couple closer looks of Sasha! Their outfit was pretty fun. I haven't done modern outfits in... probably ever, and it was nice having a lot more references to work off of.
Their sefirot necklace was fun to draw because I have one almost exactly like it. The flannel was the first time trying to do plaid by hand with a new little technique (Base colors+Multiply layer for dark stripes+Overlay layer for light stripes) but it went way faster than the god damn quilt?
All in all, my favorite detail was doing cosmetics, because I got to do little chips missing in the nail polish, and that's probably the first time I've drawn eyeshadow and willingly shown the result! : D
Next we have the little rat family in the background, with the wall-dwelling Rat King peeking through the wall, which is where I did dipped into tracing a couple photos instead of just looking at references.
Generally my process has been doing anatomy lines over a reference, then working off of those for about... three to four layers for body->clothes->hair->Full sketch, then another with whatever brush I wanna do the lineart with (usually a watercolor detail brush from one of two sets on Krita), but I'll note where I skipped that process and committed some art crimes.
The two background rats (Pestis and Mortar) are from a pair of stock photos from Getty, while the one in the foreground (Yersinia) is a mix of a pic that pops up in meme dumps from time to time of a smoking rat and a few bits that weren't in the original image. (Jewelry, the legs that were covered by an ash tray in the original pics, the "Buns and Roses" lighter she clearly stole from Sasha.)
Time for some graffiti transcriptions! Most of the variation in the graffiti came from switching the size of my brush and trying to mix up my handwriting, but there's a few segments where I use a font, then outlined the font with a 2px across brush to make it fit more into the art. Mostly, this was through screenshotting google docs, but some of the fancier fonts are from cooltext.com.

So, the map behind Sasha is made up on the spot, with some inspiration from a map of the Seattle Bay. Kinda proud of just how dirty this fucking place is, but the final, and greatest achievment in making this picture look grimy...
THE RUST
I didn't exactly nail the perspective on some of these (The sketchy layer for the floor grating was done once, then dragged into place and warped with the perspective... and then completely fucked that up) but god DAMN do I love texturing the fuck out of things!
There's like six Multiply layers scattered about because it turned out it's a phenomenal way to make the shading of multiple textures make sense without losing that texture, and I feel so god damn powerful!
Oh, right, the posters.
Not much to say about them. The righthand one was 95% traced from a mafia stock photo, while the hands in the left came from another stock photo.
Honestly, I drew the frames, then had no idea what to put in them. There was briefly gonna be a pic referencing a cosplay photo I have of myself, but eh...
The rats and the guy in the wall were originally referencing a Vampire the Masquerade character I had named Pretty Paulie, who was a mafioso turned nosferatu who dubbed his crew the Rat Pack. I figured if there was some kind of dramatic, Scarface-esque movie about him, he'd definitely find a way to keep the poster nearby, and I wanted to slap in one of those "Give blood!" posters from the Red Cross except... not from the red cross.
I don't really feel like I put in much effort into these (compared to the Graffiti-a-thon with several subplots), but hey... they covered the tile, which before shading was boring and very flat, so they did their job.
I'll leave you with some zoomed in textures, because I do feel proud about those! I make them via a combo of oil paint and watercolor brushes, usually with a whole lot of different coats of varying opacity until it looks like the thing it's supposed to be. :)
I've only just started drawing again this year (I've been editing a looooot longer) so there's a lot of spaces where I have hiccups, but I'm figuring out the areas I do well in.
...Also sweet Jesus this started as me trying to figure out what a character looked like. It says 3 full days worth of editing was done in Krita on this file, and I don't think it's counting the idle time.

Oh, and because apparently nobody wanted to know anything from that artist ask post, here’s all the answers anyway:
Do you prefer traditional drawing, or digital? I actually feel a lot more comfortable with sketching and lines in traditional, but I've been spoiled by digital tools for coloring and refining. I'd say digital for now since I don't have a good means to do traditional lines and then transfer them to PC for coloring; no room for a scanner and too lazy to clean up a photo. How long have you been drawing? Technically since pre-school, but I started drawing seriously with intent to improve in 6th grade, which was 1997-1998, so about 20 years. :> How many classes have you taken? I took technically four years in high school, but the teacher didn't so much teach drawing techniques as she did nurture students' existing abilities and provide challenges, usually in the form of prompts and different mediums. I also took one summer in college that was an introductory course that didn't really teach me anything I didn't already know, I just had to take it as compulsory 'diversification' (since I was majoring in biology). It probably helped a lot, though, in the sense that it forced a lot of still life drawing, something that's of great value to all artists that I tend to shun because it's 'boring' and such, which is a very bad mentality to have, haha. Do you have a DeviantArt, personal website, or art blog? I have a DevArt (Daimera) but it's defunct and I will never update it again. It's a good way to see how I've grown, though, since it goes back pretty far and I haven't deleted much, only hidden a bunch of my original character art due to annoying children and art thieves. My dedicated art blog now is artslush here on Tumblr. What’s your favorite thing to draw? Whatever I'm having fun with at the time! Usually monsters, but not always! What’s your least favorite thing to draw? Realistic people. Realistic anything. Seriously, just take a photo. How often do you use references? Much less than I probably should. Do you draw professionally, or just for fun? Just for fun. Not sure if I'd enjoy drawing professionally; if it becomes my job I fear I may grow to resent one of my only forms of enjoyment. How much time do you spend drawing on an average day? Not nearly long enough. Are you confident about your art? I'm sort of see-sawing. I used to draw way more for others in the past, but when I started attracting the attention of a younger and more entitled crowd (not gonna say who but if you've been there you know), I've become more and more reclusive out of the desire to just not have to deal with the drama of kids trying to guilt me into doing free art for them. "I love your work! See, I've complimented you! You owe me now! You've done free art for others, so why not meee???! Wow, you're such a horrible person! I'm going to treat you like garbage and tell everyone what an awful person you are for not giving me free stuff or reciprocating my 'kindness' to you!!" Maybe I'm overreacting or projecting, but it's something I just want to avoid, even if it's not likely to happen. I just can't deal with that kind of trash. Do you ever collaborate with others? I think I've only done a small handful of collabs, and even then, it was more "someone did a black and white pic for me for reason A or B and I decided to color it", or someone seeing lineart I’ve done and going “Hey, that’ s awesome! Can I color it? :D” I don’t think I’ve ever been in on a project that was a collab from the get-go. How long does an average piece take you to complete? Depends on the complexity, I'm fairly impatient so I prefer to take as little time as possible, preferably in one sitting split up by short breaks. I'd say 3-6 hours? I get VERY disheartened if I spend a lot of time on something only for it to not get attention proportionate to the effort I'd put in. Do you draw more today than you did in the past, or do you draw less? Less, unfortunately. I was a lot more confident and dedicated back in the day until art students I'd surrounded myself with destroyed my drive with their self-destructive attitudes. I felt very "Well, they're way better than I will ever be and they think their work is garbage, what hope do I have of ever being anything more than what amounts to worse than garbage?" I don't feel that way now, but I was never able to pick my momentum back up fully after hitting that wall. Do you think you’re justified in giving other people art advice? No, but I often find myself being asked for it anyway, haha. What are you currently trying to improve on? Nothing specifically, though I'm trying to make single character pieces slightly more dynamic than "character standing there in default idle pose." I'm not fully successful, but baby steps. What is the most difficult thing for you to draw? Backgrounds and sensible lightsourcing. What is the easiest thing for you to draw? Nonsensical eldritch monsters. Do you like to challenge yourself? Not really. I'm very much a comfort zone person. Are you confident that you’re improving steadily? Yep! It's a very slow steadily though, haha. Do you draw more fanart, or more original art? Lately it's been more fanart; it gets more attention more quickly, and I find it more satisfying to draw something when I know more people like it. It's a double-edged sword, though; if people are clearly liking the content simply for being that content rather than for being my art of that content, I start feeling bitter. See: me any time half-assed Pokemon fanart of mine that I don't even think is all that good gets stupidly popular. Do you feel jealous when you see other people’s art, or inspired? (Be honest!) I used to, and on occasion I will on certain very specific kinds of designs (usually mechanical and cybernetic), but for the most part it's counter-productive to hold a bar high with the work of others and expect to achieve that. All it does is lead to despair. Do you like to draw in silence, or with music? MUSIC. I have a lot of playlists, and they're usually game-based. For digital artists: what program(s) do you use? I used to use OpenCanvas predominantly, but now I use Manga Studio. I'll occasionally touch up in an ancient copy of Photoshop 7. I occasionally dabble in Krita, especially if I want live symmetry. For sprites, I usually use Photoshop for the initial, and ImageReady to animate, but lately I've been trying to switch over to PyxelEdit. If I want to do animating that's not pixels, I use Pencil2D, but you'll almost never get to see my failures there, hahaha. For digital artists: how many layers does a typical piece require? Back when I was using OpenCanvas, which only had 'transparent' layer styles (Add, Multiply, Subtract), I'd usually have very few, and a lot of those habits held. Often times my layer flow looks like: - Lines - Highlight details - Broad highlight - Shadows - Color - Sketch And sometimes I'll just add one or two additional glowy or shadow detail layers to that. This is usually per-character, so multi-character pics will double what's there for the most part. If there's a background, though, expect like five thousand layers, lol. What inspires you to not just make art, but to be a better artist? My head is filled with a lot of crap, and I just want other people to kind of share in that. Since I'm not great with words on a descriptive level, drawing the things I see in my mind is the next best thing to magically gaining the ability to transmit my thoughts and mental images to others, lol. The better I am, the better I can get those ideas across.

Project Title: Project Proposal and Realisation in Art & Design
Section 1: Review
For my Final Major Project, I would like to focus on the themes ‘self-control and temptation’ and use Greek Myths to portray the message of both; without self-control, temptation will get the best of you and could ruin your future goals. Before doing this course, I did Fine art during GCSE’s, therefore I’ve had a lot of experience with drawing and painting, I’ve also practised making 3D objects, however, I’ve learnt new techniques in textiles, ceramics and also feel as though I’ve becoming a better artist because I’ve been given the chance to focus on art. For the recent projects I’ve completed, I’ve mainly created three dimensional outcomes, which is why I’ve chosen to focus on illustration for this project, I feel that it will help me improve on my drawing skills and also with the ability the draw proportionately. I would like to have access to the print room as I think it will be beneficial to me, especially when producing experimental pieces; making lino prints and etchings.
Section 2: Project Concept
Greek Mythology is something I’d like to expand my knowledge on; it’s a part of history which I find interesting because of it’s many stories and creatures. Stories like The Odyssey, which is what I’d like to use to depict my work, however I’d like to focus on only one part of the epic poem, which is where creatures called sirens lure sailers into death by singing to make them forget and eventually die out in the sea; this section symbolises temptation and self-control, which are interesting themes I’d like to base my work on. Illustration, is what I’ll do to depict my themes, because it’s a pathway I’ve not focussed on yet within this course, however it is something I do on the side, when practising my drawings and photoshop/krita skills, and I highly enjoy it.
When researching artists and imagery, I’ve mainly been looking at ones who focus on the fantasy world, because the mythical and fantasy worlds are very similar. I will get primary sources from museums like the British Museum and the V&A; places which hold Grecian artefacts, so that I could also collect images and a do a series of sketches, as a part of my research. I’ll also go to the Saatchi and Tate so that I get a first person view of artwork. I will receive secondary research from books and articles, as well as information and images found online.
Section 3: Evaluation
I have chosen to create a blog for my Final Major Project, because I prefer typing my work and journal. I also always keep my laptop and phone by my side, therefore writing ideas would be fast and simple. All of my work will be posted on my blog, including the sketches in my sketchbook, which I feel is easy to access and I feel is better when assessing my work. Aside from my blog, I would also keep a daily planner with me, to write down my targets for that day; things that need to get done and things that need refining. I will also ask others, such as my tutors and peers to assess my work, to check if my project is flowing well.
