I'm insanely close to clearing my first 10-star song in this game (highest star difficulty) and honestly it's kind of crazy to think that I've made this much progress already ;A;

the thing is i'm hyperaware of the fact that i'm Weird About Andrew Dabb but it comes from a place of me realizing back in fall 2021 that i wanted to identify why exactly i didn't like him and deciding to do a close watch of his spn eps. and when i realized i was enjoying parts of it, i decided to see what i could turn up any of his non-spn work. (this is something i've always tended to do with creatives: tracking down older stuff for a more holistic view of their work.)

i was so stuck on how much i hated some parts of his writing (s7 dabb-loflin is horrendous) and couldn't get past that... then i found out independently that he was showrunning the upcoming netflix resi show (a franchise i both love and have complicated feelings about) which filled me with dread that the guy who co-wrote 07x22 would helm a show with a predominantly black cast -- especially with the ultimate villain, albert wesker, played by a black man (RIP lance reddick, you are dearly missed). i wanted to be optimistic but i was ready to be infuriated and was so nervous that i'd hate something i'd been looking forward to as some camp horror tv.

but then. oh. OH. it was everything i ever wanted from resi and never thought i could have. i could not conceive of a resi like this. a resi where women and poc are treated with empathy and as nuanced characters with interiority. where they are the central characters. the video games have their own issues but the movies are truly egregious when it comes to black characters. so to have a predominantly black cast (and a black female protag, no less!) and have them treated respectfully was amazing. this was a show that had heart and a somewhat diverse writer's room and bts crew (not saying it was perfect) and you could see that difference in how characters were treated and how the plot and direction was handled. (i think having female directors and producers in particular helped a lot.)

for those who have not seen the anderson/jovovich movies: there is always a token black character and they will always die by the halfway mark bc they make stupid decisions. it's non-stop tits and ass shots of jovovich (which feels super weird when the director is her husband). alice (jovovich) is an Action Girl who is frequently subjected to sexualized violence but unfortunately, i love the camp horror of it. it's complicated. the video games have their own issues with the portrayal of women and ada wong being DLC feels really shitty when she's so pivotal. women are largely either helpless or Strong Sexy Action Women.

like i really cannot express just how much 8 episodes of tv so wholly changed my opinion of a writer/showrunner bc it showed such growth. a showrunner is only one piece of the puzzle of a tv show but they are the ones guiding it and the ones who have substantial influence in the hiring and development/direction of the story.

it's like. i don't forgive dabb for 07x22 and the shit he wrote with loflin (or solo, tho he improved a lot without loflin), but to see how resi turned out and to read/watch interviews with him and the bts crew is like. oh, okay. i think this person gets it now. i don't think i can forgive and forget bc s7 makes my blood boil, but i can accept that growth has happened here and that's what we should want from people.

also i'm gonna say that when i look at how i am Weird About Dabb and take a step back, i can see that i'm about as weird about him as some folks are about other writers and actors from spn (and willing to acknowledge his faults). i just chose a weird writer to be Weird about.

sorry but i just have a lot of feelings about resi.

#it really breaks my heart that in interviews with the bts folks they talked about how this was *supposed* to be a diff take on the franchise #that both worked with canon but didn't require the viewer to have 20 years of plot stored in their brains #to see these ppl who were so passionate and clearly loved the franchise and wanted it to grow and change and then have it cancelled #then there's the interview with dabb where they asked him about casting reddick to play a historically white character #with his answer basically being 'he expressed interest. you don't turn down lance fucking reddick. we adjusted the part accordingly.'#'if you watch the show you'll understand the changes to wesker and why he's alive even tho he died in the games'#the answer was just 'this wesker is a clone' with zero acknowledgment of the race change. it was amazing.#i'm so so so SO sad that we lost this show after one season and i've cried over it but i'm glad we at least got one season #it was so 'this is everything i ever wanted and didn't know i could have' that idk if i can go back to the main franchise #resi

#my blog so imma post what i want #but I've been thinking abt two of my aus both to do with the second game fjhchgc but i don't think I've mentioned this one before soo #i like the idea of sera making an ai of my s/i just like she did with the others yeah it breaks my canon but idc #my s/i was always like an older sister figure to sera so why wouldn't she make my s/i too n of course her ai is shipped with heat c:#my other au revolves around the big incident basically sheffers isn't the only demon in that room #so ob is still shot but not fatally he's still bleeding out tho cause bros been shot but anyway sheffers leans down to do his whole #people are just tools thing my s/i either heard the shot n ran to see what was going on or she was there anyway but either way she kicks #sheffers straight in the face to get him away from ob n basically tries her best to stem the bleeding n keep him alive sera sees n hears it #as she does in game but in this version sheffers n my s/i become demons but while sheffers is just a ravenous creatute who slaughtered n ate #everyone in the facility my s/i is hell bent on protecting ob she basically stands guard over him like a guard dog n gets into a vicious #demon brawl with sheffers once he's devoured everyone else n has set his sights on ob n my s/i #she keeps him away till he's gunned down but cause my s/i shows no threat n is just ob's guard dog rn she's subdued n taken for studying #ob is taken for medical treatment cause he's barely hanging on n was one of the only two survivors from the incident #my s/i basically becomes his demon wifey n is pretty much glued to his side #they both still work for the Karma society but it's more to make sure seras safe then anything for the organisation itself #i do also like the idea of heat n ob meeting iyfyjfjhf #shut up rattie no one gives a shit lol

Okay I wanna ask you Blorbo wrapped questions back lmao. I'm also curious about who you thought was coolest, who you rotated in your head the most and who was most fun to write. But also, did you have anyone that was kinda driving you up a wall but then something clicked and you really figured out how to write them? If not, who's still driving you up a wall?

Kendrick! I think you saw that I got too excited and answered my own questions over here but who has been driving me up a wall is an excellent question, lol. There are a few who aren't actively driving me up a wall (what's up with Aza huh) but the people who I still haven't got a hold on are Declan, Horatio, and Sid.

I'm almost hesitant to say Declan because I don't think I have a hard time writing him but I also feel like I haven't fully keyed into the fact that he's an autism creature of a man (and also making it clear that the way the rest of the crew does things behind his back is not them infantilizing him because of it but more complicated than that. They do think he's fragile but that's because of how he's handled his grief). Also like. He literally trusts his crew with his life. But he is so so bad at talking to them and I haven't totally figured out how that all works out.

Oops this got long so here's a cut

Horatio got a character lift in this version. He's always been a sweetheart but that evolved out of him having A Sense Of Justice while also being generally pathetic and wet and soft. Now he has the Standing family deviousness that goes along with it and I don't know how to write that. Because also he looks completely different to Sid, who knows him very well and who he's open with, than he does to Avis, who hates him somewhat for the circumstances of his birth (she tries not to because it's not his fault) but extremely much for being sun-coded in the "cheerful" and "unavoidable and intense" ways. So like, what is he plotting (especially about getting Sorian and Avis back together) and how is he plotting it and how does this dovetail with the happy-go-lucky florist which is equally as much who he is?

Sid on the other hand is challenging in the sense that writing him feels fine. He's a real everyman if you will. Except I don't get his character and I think that's a major stumbling block for AOM as a whole. Yeah, on some level he has to be the sad traumatized guy but like. How does he handle his parents trying to run his life once he takes a massive step outside of their frame of reference? How does this work with Avis's story? (Can I successfully shove these two stories into one thing that is a whole? They have so many themes in common help) In his earliest iterations he was the devil-may-care I'm-doing-my-best guy who mildly tormented Horatio Sense Of Justice and I guess they've sort of flipped? Except Sid is always the Doing My Best guy.

Also when it comes to Anni and Zel, Anni is so easy to write with all the technical stuff and much more challenging with the romance stuff and I don't want it to be that way aaaaaaa

As for who did click, I think I'm getting there with Patience (even though I haven't worked on TFA in a while), Rodney worked better when I just let him be soft, working out Fay's whole divorce history helped make her easier to write (she's not pretending to be the good suburban mom. she just is sometimes and other times she sucks), the fact that Wylie hates himself cracked his whole character wide open, and lately I've realized that a critical part of post-divorce Sorian is that he's tired. He's tired of Avis needling him, always being there but never being there for him. He's not even sure he deserves for her to be. But he kinda wishes she would just leave and move on so he can too.

#'but your presence still lingers here and it won't leave me alone'#every iteration I get closer with Anni & Zel. I promise they have chemistry. I just don't feel confident in my ability to bring it out #which is probably the real problem. I think I'm gonna just write a ton of them outside of TFA until I get it #also when I start writing Binna again I think she's going to be kind of tough but we'll get there #original Old Canon Sid was a fucking trip (highly affectionate). I think he was dead? and trapped in the time stream?#so he could just go through time and dimensions however he pleased to annoy everybody equally #he and horatio had this unexplored 'menaces to lovers' potential #his methods were questionable but he really was trying to do the right thing. I wish I had written seven million more pages of him #I originally solved Sid vs. his parents with what was essentially a heist plot crafted to convince them he was a lost cause #which was delightful but. I love the fact that I can work as hard as I can manage with a broken tooth and a dying tooth (one on each side, I've been chewing on the cavity for a year) and I still cannot save even $10 towards getting dental treatment (2 impacted wisdom teeth, + tooth broken off under the gum, + bad cavity) because I barely make enough to cover my food and board and the insane energy bill

#I'm just ranting don't mind me it's fine I am continuing to exist as usual I may delete this later bc it's a bit of a bummer to read #I prefer to keep my blogging to fun or otherwise nonserious content because it's supposed to be for decompression no real world drama here #I got into a 3 hour body language study and earned $50 so I spent that as fun money on a couple games during the Steam sale just to #take a break from the constant cycle of getting paid and then immediately saying goodbye to all but about 15 cents #(well it was 1 game Slime Rancher 2 and then 2 expansion packs one for Planet Zoo and another for Cities Skylines long play hours mileage)#I've tried to budget to buy small things like a fan or a toothbrush maybe (mine is 8yrs old and doesn't charge sometimes) but NOPE #let alone stashing away over $2000 for the amount of treatment I need given tooth extractions are $200-$500 each #I use about $50 of groceries a week ($30 USD) sometimes up to $80 if I need to buy some extra toiletries or bonuses like ham/falafel/bread #our last quarterly power bill was $1900 FOR NO REASON even for a winter one #olessan oration #the work I have is HIT/mturk type work which pays amazingly well and I am so grateful because I can't work in a traditional environment due #my inability to sleep/wake on anyone else's schedule and need for engaging work but it also means each worker is basically a contract worke #picking their own hours which is VERY HARD to stick to for me since I may also have ADHD-i but that diagnosis also costs like $2000 in Aus #so I'm doing my best fucking lmao #I have a set minimum hours I want to keep up to and move to full time but I am so exhausted by the constant background noise of #the tooth problems that I burn out very quickly #like the tooth ache isn't that bad #the tooth is actively dying but the pain isn't unbearable it just shits me off at all times #it's bearable most of the time and doesn't affect my sleep unless the temp is cold or something #it's been bad this week tho so I've gone through almost all my ibuprofen managing it #the tooth that broke off broke off earlier in the year and the gum has mostly healed over and the dead root is concealed inside my gums now #that stopped being painful in mid 2021 but when it died it was pretty bad it did stop me sleeping for a couple weeks #Christmas 2021 involved me contemplating ripping the tooth out myself lmao #the nerve eventually died seemingly without an abscess #unless I DID have an abscess but that seems extremely unlikely because abscesses are SEVERE AND HORRIBLE AND LIFE THREATENING #sometimes I can feel the tooth ligament wiggling on its own or I like flex it by accident it's so weird bc the tooth is gone so #the ligament is still holding onto the root but with way less weight #anyway I am eating my mac n cheese n veg with the side that has the missing tooth because the cavity tooth has a big bruise along the gumli #gumline which may be from overzealous brushing (I fill the tooth will temporarily filling putty and it needs to be cleaned well when the #putty falls out)

#Arright here I go again I gotta do some of these when I gotta vent #posting this on the 17th of August #So the elestral thing is going alright. My focus has shifted a LOT there but I'm still working with em #But the majority of my work comes from another client now. It's another one of these things that I'd love to make by myself #But someone else is making it and wanting me to do the art and music. It's gonna be huge. What a life it is. Anyway #This gif is from yet another project I started recently. Separate from Smile More HoaM and anything else. I keep fucking doing this #But this one's strange. It reflects my current working skills I've built up all these years. A multimedia experience that has a start n end #featuring all your favourite elphame characters in a new style. I'm enjoying making it but there's one problem #I haven't worked on it in like a month and a half #Work is piling up. Pixel art is something I don't do for myself anymore #It's not even a case of “as soon as I have time to myself my fingers can't move" it's that I just do not have any spare time lmao #I meet Ashley once or twice a week. We still play digimon a lot but we're taking this month off since she's petsitting and can't go out lat #My flatmate has basically taken the summer off work since his job pays well enough for him to do so #so having him around to play games with is nice. Feels awkward taking baths with him in the house tho lmao #He is kind of the only reason I take breaks. I got pikmin 4 and it is incredible. Genuinely might have replaced Digimon World as 1st place #Mum took Andy and I to Netherlands recently. It was incredible. I played in a local digimon tournament and ate shit #Have just been so excited about travelling lately. Ashy taking me to manchester soon and I think we'll go london next spring or sooner #Worried I'm overdoing it with the tags so I'll sign off here. Work is stressing me out but it looks like big things are happening.#OH MY GOD I HAVE STOPPED BLEEDING BTW. Like almost altogether. Haven't in like a month. once again devastated that I don't know how to make video games because my video game dreams are literally the coolest

#This one might be the most complicated game I've had so far tho #Like... Bc it's multiplayer and has no real ending #It's like Minecraft apocalypse edition ig #Like.. there is plot. But there's no other humans around unless you invite friends over #And like. Idk how to explain it? But you gather resources #You start with a boat and a basic fishing rod and your flute #And you actually don't have any songs for the flute in the beginning but you absolutely can learn them #By finding radios around the world #Also the world is made of like. Specific “levels”?#Like there's a city and some farmland and stuff #And. It's not that everything is flooded but you do get everywhere via boat #Which is why making sure your boat survives is very important bc you don't want to be stuck with evil possums and no way home #And then you like. Build your base in a specific “level” where a lot of the basic game lore can be found #And you can tame beasts from the overworld and stuff #And get upgrades to fish automatically to automate survival #And slowly you can begin to prosper #And then you go tread old ground and find more stuff now that you're not scared it'll kill you #Because so what if there's a drowned beast in the closet of upside down house you have your own beasts to beat it for you #My favorite part was actually arriving at the base of whoever was playing in my dream tho #Like bc they actually super upgraded the shack #So while it starts as a mostly decrepit fishing shack #With a fireplace to cook your catch so you don't starve and a bed #They got everything furnished nice and cleared to dead trees outside to get some farms going #And made a lot of the cool little structures like the ones that allow for beast breeding (so you get more beasts to fight for you)#And also remade all the walls so they're wood and glass #Also I love how they named their river beast martha that's lovely #Anyways though because the world is like 99% abandoned by humans? Apparently if you fix stuff up enough you get a reputation #And then the three alive humans come talk to you and tell you lore stuff #Like how big company was about to celebrate 181 years and had a break in happen that killed the ceo and his wife #(which you learn from their kid)
