Dave Strider for the character thing
Dave Strider!
First Impression: This guy is gonna be a prick. He’s so full of himself. He is a huge asshole. Why do my friends like him so much?
Impression Now: Deeply broken. Powerful, with an air of confidence that’s only skin deep. He deserves happiness and time to recover. He deserves to never have to fight again.
Favorite Moment: The conversation on the roof with Dirk. It showed the conclusion of his internal struggle - calling out his abuser, facing his hatred of conflict, being open about his sexuality for the first time with someone other than Karkat. He was vulnerable. He hugged Dirk. He asked for help. It was powerful.
Idea for a Story: Oh my goodness so many. I actually just wrote one on AO3 [Post Traumatic Strider Disorder, for those interested]. For this… Dave becomes really good friends with Kanaya during the planning for her and Rose’s wedding. She teaches him about fashion, which he appropriates ironically, wearing things just slightly out of season or “technically appropriate” but garish. This leads to the frustration of everyone on Earth C, who are tired of seeing Dave walk around in peuce suits and tailored shirts made of jpeg artifacts.
Unpopular Opinion: Okay, so, this is gonna be a rant - DAVE STRIDER IS WHITE. Now hear me out - I don’t care what race people attribute to him at all! You HC him as Japanese, African-American, Polynesian? You go! He’s still white. Dave Strider is an albino - he has red eyes, something that is only seen in the human race in albino people. Even African folks who are albino are born with ghost-white skin and hair. This is something that NEVER gets representation - ever albino I know from literature is a villain or pariah, not a hero! It’s also the only canon hint that we get at the appearance of the kids. Please, PLEASE - if you draw Dave Strider, draw his white skin. It’s important.
Favorite Relationship: I’m filthy DaveKat trash. They’re wonderful together. They compliment each other perfectly. Dave struggles with his sexuality, so having a partner that has no hangups about it helps him relax in his identity, and not label himself in a way that would make him panic. Karkat struggles with major quadrant confusion and issues with his mutant biology. Having Dave around is great for him, because Dave doesn’t think he’s selfish or greedy for quadrant flipping, and he finds all alien biology equally weird - he couldn’t care less if Karkat had vestigial gills or red blood or nubby horns. He thinks it’s all cool/weird. They’re great together and I wish we could see what happened on the meteor.
Favorite Headcanon: Dave struggles with saying I love you. Bro used to say it every time he finished beating the shit out of Dave so the words just don’t come out. But his friends never question it - he shows it in other ways. He writes songs for John’s birthday and helps plan Rose’s wedding (even walks her down the aisle). He helps Jake slowly handle longer excursions with people and gets Dirk to laugh through stupid jokes. He cooks with Jane, and helps invent Alternian Fusion food so he and Karkat dont have to buy two sets of groceries. And he does everything he can for Karkat. Once he relaxes into himself, he is the king of PDA - always holding hands, giving quick kisses, constantly being in contact with him in some way. It flusters Karkat but he never complains - he knows it’s Dave’s way of saying “I love you.”
(Thank you, nonnie!! Dave Strider has a big place in my heart - I always love an excuse to rant about him!)
