Do you have any favorite naruto fics you’d recommend? Any pairing, complete or not, on-hiatus, gen, oneshots, anything is fine lol

I was legitimately just pruning my bookmarks the other day!! thank you so much for asking.

I don't read too much fanfic these days, and I'm picky when I do--only about grammar/punctuation and immersion though. I ship a LOT of stuff (I guess The Youth would call me a proshipper) and although I never read darkfic, I don't shy away from weirder kinks and unhealthy relationship stuff.

categorizing by pairing, if applicable. some of them are smutty, and please note that the first 3 come from FFN which doesn't have a tagging system, but there is some SA CW I'll give in advance.

KAKASAKU | my first OTP! formative fics that totally reshaped my understanding of what fanfiction could be, and how well-written chemistry can make it or break it

HOUSE OF CROWS is the quintessential kakasaku fanfic. it was written during shippuden and so is canon divergent because of that, but also tells a comprehensive story of its own right that is intriguing and well planned. excellent characterization and world building. leaves me gutted in the best way on my yearly reread.

DUTY BEFORE HONOR is another silvershine classic. I don't reread is as often as House of Crows but they are just about equal in quality. again, the chemistry between them is off the charts, and the world feels so alive.

WILL OF FIRE for me is up there with House of Crows in being essential kakasaku reading. cynchick is a multisaku champion and a wonderful storyteller. the stakes in this one are stressful, the romance tense and believable, and we once again get lovely world building and great chemistry.

ITAKISA | a pairing near and dear to me, because men who do everything wrong are so deeply relatable. they both know they don't deserve anything good ever again but they found each other!!!! ARE YOU GUYS SEEING THIS--

A SHARK HIDDEN INN THE LEAVES doesn't have my favorite version of Kisame, but he's plenty close enough. it's a lengthy oneshot that got me into certain *ahem* kinks. it is a very fun and wild fic that is entirely self-aware of how absurd it's being, and manages to have nothing but sincerity at the same time (and I highly recommend the author's other stories as well)

AN ORCHESTRA PLAYING ON, INSANE is a modern AU (extremely rare in my bookmarks) that absolutely tore my heart out. god is it SO much to ask for these losers to be happy?! yes, it is, and I love every moment of it

MADAMITO | a rarepair I am SUCH a sucker for that has some of the most talented authors writing for it. lots of them have ot3 elements between them and hashirama, often angsty, but stuff like that is part of the appeal for me, lol

A HANDFUL OF SKY is an unfinished fic that I genuinely think about like once a week. if it ever updates then I will be over the moon. technically hashimadamito but it hadn't quite gotten there yet

LIKE ALTARS is just such a beautiful piece of writing, mostly on madara. it is everything, that is all

BLOOD AND RIVER WATER is more mito-centric but has one of my favorite madaras of all time

YOURS ARE RATTLED BONES is another short, mito-centric but gut-wrenching piece featuring the opposite type of madara from the last one

OTHER | character-centric stuff that isn't necessarily shippy but also doesn't have a very "gen" vibe either?

A SERPENT IN THE RICE is a little series about orochimaru that makes me feel so so so many things. highly recommended

HERETIC is such a love letter to kushina, and kurama too. cannot stress enough how much I adore this one

there's a few others that I probably won't link on tumblr, mostly unhealthy and/or "problematic" smut hhfhdj but maybe I'll make a public rec list on ao3 for these different categories and stuff like that.

but yeah that's pretty much it!!! I know it's not a huge list with a lot of variety but it's what I've enjoyed over the last 15+ years in the naruto fandom.

more titbits about my ocs

Hazzard became radio active due to an unfortunate stint in Chernobyl. the merc group was getting paid hella cash to hunt down some people and said people didn't want to get caught so they booked it in a random direction that just happened to be radioactive. the groups commander was the type of man to care more for results and money than his soldiers so he ordered them to advance anyway (while they had no protective gear against the radiation) Hazzard in all his wisdom went after them and of course got their asses but spent just a little too long in there and the radiation got him. now he didn't really get sick or anything (i have an au where he got cancer from it and that's the reason Romanas joined tf 141, to pay for treatment) but the radiation stayed on him. the thing that saved him was probably his height (205 cm) and density (man is built like a brick tank). Romanas, who was on the mission with him spent three days throwing up from the radiation (and stress from almost loosing Hazzard but he won't tell anyone that). Johan made fun of him. so yeah it's not fully fleshed out and i might rework it but that's the main idea on how Hazzard became radioactive (there's also a version where it happens because of a lab accident but idk because most of Hazzards backstory is a lab lol)

now Void is a different egg. you see i have the "now" and "after" of his story figured out but the "before" is beyond me. i was of the mind that the fact i don't have much of a backstory for him only adds to the whole "nobody knows anything about him" bit. i was planning on making him a lab experiment gone rouge (since commander did find him in the woods eating a deer carcass. after that the guy just appeared in the groups base) but idk about that. what i am certain on is that his tongue and vocal chords were removed surgically. who did it and why we may never know (i have like two certain story points for his backstory but i think the lack of it kind of adds to it y'know? he's Void just Void nobody knows anything about him)

also Selga trying to feed people has everything to do with the fact that food depravation was a common punishment under commanders rule so literally everyone in that group has food anxiety

also all of my ocs are very touch starved and very cuddly with eachother but they hate outsiders touching them or who they consider "theirs" (if they accept you be prepared for hesitant and testy touches and if you allow it or encourage it you'll have several grown men laying down on you like you're a bed, grumbling into your ear while they nuzzle your cheeks and under your chin) they also take group naps in cuddle piles. sleep is very important to them due to some stuff with..... "training" so sleeping and napping is among their favorite things to do once commander is no longer in charge

Since I've gotten so much information, this response probably won't be lengthy. But know that I adore what you've typed.

Stone was originally an OC where no one was supposed to know much about him (I still think Johnny & Gaz don't know too much about him) but then I got excited about his backstory and told literally everyone. So I'm rocking with the fact that not much is known about Void's backstory.

Selga trying to feed people because they all have food anxiety hurts me deeply. I hope the commander's dead. He deserves to be dead.

We love cuddle piles here, The Lions share barracks because they like to cuddle.

Another lengthy post about my upcoming camping trip nobody asked for, but here i am typing it out anyways. I need to brain dump because i have too much on my mind.

I did not realize how much more camping supplies we needed to go in early spring/end of winter. But all this stuff is adding up, giving me anxiety, and I just need to accept it's going on the credit card, and I wasn't as ready for this trip as I thought. Mentally, I'm already there, though, lol

And, all the supplies we need are still less than we could go to a hotel or airbnb for 2 nights, so I guess this is technically part of my summer fun budget even though it's stuff to keep us warm.

Still need to buy:

A mattress topper - or apparently the air mattress will steal all our body heat?

A propane heater with carbon monoxide shut off, and propane to fuel said heat.

Hot hands hand and foot pads.

Some card games because our are LOST and I'm upset about it.

A heavy wool blanket to keep us from freezing to death.

A new lantern cause we threw away our junky one.

And some odds and ends like batteries and duct tape.

And just for fun, I really want, but do not need, to buy insulated wine cups with lids. Alcohol is part of camping for me, which is why I bought so many shot bottles last night. Oh, and I talked to Chris about buying a bottle of mango cream liquor to chill and sip on, and he sounded good with that idea. I think he likes it more than I do anyways but it would be really yummy out the cooler.

We're also going to State Park right by the weed man's house, so we might stop and replenish our weed supply on the way to the camp ground. I want to buy a fun edible from the tobacco shop, but I probably won't have the extra money for a one-time fun experience.

I need to use this nervous energy to clean up my house, but I'm having a hard time not looking up more information and making plans.

After lengthy consideration, I'm going to put this under a cut lol

Ooooh this is hard ... there's a couple that I really like. Crimson Curls is definitely up there because I have been trying to write murder mysteries forever, probably since I was an elementary school kid reading Nancy Drew books, and that was the first time I actually completed one in a way that holds up to me. I'm definitely proud of the first chapter-- I think I really got the whole "true crime podcast" feel down for it. I'm also super proud of A Breath and A Whisper, which is unsurprising given that it's another mystery. I had always wanted to write a ghost story and I was really happy with the way that turned out-- I'm hoping to be able to outdo it for this Halloween, although I realize I probably won't have time to finish the story I want to write in time. Also Attached and Severed-- I think I'm the only person who read those (which I get lol) but they are literally the imaginary world I used to play in as a little kid brought to life, and so that's very exciting and special to me.

Fractured, 100%. Looking back, I understand why-- it was the companion/sequel to a oneshot that had been out for a year, it's more focused on an OC than Loki, and it's a two parter (in retrospect I really should have stuck to my instinct of keeping it as one part). But at the time, I thought it would be really big. Whole is still one of my most successful stories on AO3, and I had gotten more than a few requests to write a sequel/continuation to it, so I had really high expectations. It took a year to write and I put so much effort into it and was really proud of it, so it kind of hurt when it got very little interaction. But that's just the way the cookie crumbles.

Probably Orange is the Happiest Color because that was such a goofy idea that I wrote for kicks and giggles and then it became my most interacted fic on Tumblr for months lol. In general though I tend not to have a good track record for guessing what will be popular-- fluffy, more lighthearted stuff tends to do super well, but since I don't really like reading or writing that very often, I'm always surpised when my fluffy fics get a lot of attention. Likewise, I always expect my angsty stuff to do much better than it does because I love writing it and put way more effort into it 😂

If we're talking fanfic, then Until Tomorrow, which was an experiment for me to see if anything would happen with it lol. It didn't do super well when I first posted it to tumblr, but it got a good amount of interaction on AO3 which was really exciting and inspired me to continue writing fanfic. If we aren't talking fanfic, the very first thing I posted to tumblr was an original story that I was very proud of when I wrote it but now physically cannot read because I hate it 😂 I won't link it but it is still on my masterlist .... along with several other old cringy original things lol

A Friend From Work, which I wrote for the lovely @naterson's birthday in June ... it's been a bit lol. This summer was kind of rough mentally and I had a lot of writer's block as a result of it, which was disappointing because I had such big plans for the stuff I wanted to write this summer. I do have one finished story that I'm trying to decide on when to post, and I have a couple others in various states of completion. I've also been outlining a massive Halloween fic, which I am very excited for but I don't know if I'll be able to write now that the semester is here (I'm doing an honors thesis this year so I fully expect a writing burnout). Still, I hope I can finish it because it's a really cool idea
