it happens when hes seven. He blinks and suddenly all he can see is blue, above and below, sky and sea. bright, shining blue, totally different from the pearly white walls and ceiling of his room. he blinks again, but the blue is still there.
He hears a grunt, full with confusion that he himself did not feel. after all, law was warned that this day would come. turning around, hes faced with a tall man, so much taller than him that it is ridiculous, and in the tall mans hands, there is the smallest baby of all time.
laws father was the one to explain why Lami would just disappear sometimes. as she in fact wasnt disappearing, she was being teleported closer to her soulmate. every day, once or twice she would disappear for a period of time and then appear again
lami was older than her soulmate by only a few months, but that made her the one who was pulled across the sea. soulmates worked like that, their father told him. they werent meant to be apart, so they didn't.
the older of a pair would be teleported to the younger one, so they could spend time together. law would also be taken to his soulmate one day, he just had to wait and be prepared to take care of them, since he was clearly the oldest one.
then he blinks and looks at the tall man and thinks that logically it is impossible that this is his soulmate, his eyes focus on the baby, the tiny baby that squirms in the mans arms and law knows that it is them
a moment later, the man seems to finally understand the situation. law watches his tired expression twist into one of resignation as he kneels down and shows him the baby.
''this is luffy.'' the man says, and he sounds loving, as if the baby is precious to him
law just stares dumbly as the little baby grimaces, irritated at being moved and pulled from his slumber. he watches as the little round face contorts and suddenly the boat is filled with loud crying coming from the red faced baby
when the man moves to rock the baby, a panicked expression on his face, its laws turn to grimace, impulsively approaching and pulling the man's cape.
"youre holding him wrong! you will only make him cry even more!"
he makes him sit down, adjusts his posture, placing the babys head on the mans arm, ignoring the confused and curious looks he gets throughout the process. he does everything the same way he saw his father doing on the hospital once
it takes a moment to get the baby to stop crying, but when they finally do, law finally asks.
"where is his mother? he might be hungry."
the man doesnt answer, a pained expression on his face and Law figures that its the wrong question to ask, so he continues.
''where are we going?''
"somewhere he will be safe." the man says, holding the baby tighter, a weird look in his eyes.
law blinks and "you're going to abandon him"
he watches as the man stiffens and sighs. "a child like you wouldnt understand."
"my parents work in a hospital." law says, looking away from the man to luffy. "theres a little girl there, she was abandoned by her parents because shes sick. she has friends, she has nurses and doctors and even the nuns, but she always looks extremely lonely."
the man finally looks at him, as if only now truly seeing law. law looks back.
''you shouldnt let him be lonely too. maybe he will never know of your existence, but I know he will miss your presence.''
and with that, when law blinks again, hes back in his room.

i do think it's really fun how they consistently show oliver building a wall around himself whenever anything fucked up happens to him. he stays in his room for three days after allie dies and leila is so unsure of what to do she just goes into his room to leave him a slice of pie and leaves within ten seconds. he stayed in his room when he got bullied and had to be dragged out of it. when he discovers the truth about allie he stays in a coma and then within the coma IN THE ROOM.
even outside of his bedroom any time anyone's like hey you good he goes yes ^-^ even when it is blatantly untrue. right after he gets out of the soulsnare coma esther is like ARE YOU. OKAY. and he goes me? i'm fine ^-^. when you see alicia in the glittering grotto oliver swears to save her and esther goes "oliver..." and he immediately goes sorry everybody ^-^ and keeps moving. but the most insane example of this comes from dotdd and it's when he is GIVEN DEADLY POISON AND COLLAPSES IN THE STREET AND STOPS BREATHING AND WHEN HE WAKES UP AFTER BEING GIVEN AN ANTIDOTE EVERYONE AROUND HIM GOES HOLY SHIT, OLIVER, ARE YOU ALRIGHT, AND HE GOES haha i was just tired ^-^
the only time he doesn't do this is when he is actively in distress right at that moment. if he's not actively sobbing then baby he's completely fine you have to trust him don't EVEN worry about the tear tracks. actually coming back to this i lied the other time he doesn't do this is specifically to drippy (awww) when he's trying to convince him that we HAVE to break into myrtle's house mr drippy it's the only way because if you hadn't helped ME i would still be shut away! which isn't concerning at all i promise!
it's also worth noting that when the problem concerns other people this does not apply. again this is most noticeable in dotdd (because it's superior) but he has some small moments in wotww. he's also very blunt about other people. does not mince his words. recognised character trait. in dotdd it even nets him a nemesis. but HIMSELF? he gets genuinely pissed off at drippy referring to him as a crybaby and insists it's not true. when helping myrtle drippy even remarks on it as he asks if oliver is crying and oliver snaps at him that he wasn't and he says "so much for you being honest..."
it's just such an underappreciated character flaw of oliver's i think. world's sweetest least emotionally vulnerable boy

Once again, the only writing I have to offer is dnd-related, and once again, it's also both angsty and whump-y. This is expanding on a scene that got glossed over in a session MONTHS ago, but uh, anyways, here you go:
tw for references to serious physical injury
He felt rather than saw Sigmar shake his head. “I should never have left you. If I’d known she’d bring Deadringer into this… I shouldn’t have let you go off to fight someone like him without me.”
Once again, Rook was surprised at the weight of the emotion in his mentor’s voice. He wanted to say It’s not your fault. Or maybe, I would have done it anyway, but his mouth wouldn’t cooperate. So instead he just rested his head on Sigmar’s shoulder. The damp chill that had come over him on the way here was getting stronger and he leaned into Sigmar’s warmth. “‘S cold,” he mumbled.
Sigmar picked up the pace a bit, a worried edge creeping into his voice. “Come on, come on. Just a little further.”
Rook’s eyes were heavy, and his awareness of the world was fading. He heard a door open, was dimly aware of a brightly lit, white-painted room, of being laid down on a bed. He could hear people talking urgently, unfamiliar voices joining Sigmar’s. His muddled mind only caught fragments of their words. “Concussion … Severe blood loss … Not enough…”
Multiple sets of hands touched his skin, and the familiar warmth of healing magic (when had being healed become familiar again?, he wondered dimly) flooded his body.
