“he’s not serious about this at all.” you mumbled, staring at the water of the fountain on which you were sitting. you heard the garden gate open as someone entered, causing you to let out another sigh of discontent.
“are you talking about prince seungcheol?” your handmaid asked quietly, eyeing the young gentleman who was now making his way towards the two of you.
you nodded, dipping your hand into the cool water of the fountain. “yes, him. he’s not taking this marriage proposal seriously at all. he’s not thinking straight and this is not the cheol i know.”
“oh, i’m sure he’s taking it really seriously.” your maid commented, just as seungcheol yelled at you, “good morning, love! i made you the biggest bouquet of flowers i could. in fact, mother might have a heart attack when she sees how empty our garden looks right now!”
you rolled your eyes at his statement and just as he came and stood in front of you, you splashed some of the water onto him, causing him to shriek and stumble back in horror.
“y/n!” he sputtered, shaking his head aggressively to shake off the water from his hair making him look like his adorable puppy that he owned (and made your heart skip a beat but that was something you would gladly keep to yourself). “why would you do that?”
“do what?” you asked innocently, standing up to finally greet your best friend properly. you batted your eyelashes at him, waiting for him to pout and whine and throw a tantrum of how you had ruined his silk coat like he always did. but instead he just cocked his head to a side, a playful smirk tugging at the corner of his lips.
“is that how you want to play, princess?” he asked with a raise of his eyebrow, causing your stomach to drop.
damn his eyebrow, damn his cocky smile, damn choi seungcheol and damn your feelings for your best friend.
“there’s nothing to play here, cheol.” you said as quickly as you could, turning away from him so that he wouldn't be able to see your facial expression. “if anything, it looks like this is all games for you.”
you turned back one more and nodded at your handmaid to leave the two of you, and you began walking away from the fountain, with seungcheol right behind you.
“what do you mean?” he asked, running up to catch up with you so that he was walking right beside you. seungcheol placed an arm around your waist and pulled you in closer, nearly causing you to trip on your gown. “what do you mean this is all games to me? do you not want to get married to me?”
“you tell me seungcheol.” you said, stopping abruptly to face him. he looked at you amusedly but his smile dropped the second he saw your now teary eyes. slowly, he reached out for your hand but you yanked it out of his reach. “do you want to get married to me? we aren’t supposed to get married. we should get married to someone we love. someone we will love. and someone we will continue to love for eternity.”
he frowned at you, looking at you worriedly. “i don’t understand, y/n. you’re my best friend. i’m your best friend. so if we are best friends, it shouldn't be that hard loving each other right? i mean, we already do but…if there’s someone else you like-”
“see? that’s exactly the problem!” you snapped, the tears now flowing freely down your cheeks. seungcheol stared at you in shock, raising his hand to wipe away your tears like he had done countless times before but you just stepped back, away from him. “that’s exactly your problem! you love me just because i’m your best friend. your love for me is just what you have for me as your childhood friend and i’ll never be more than that! i want to marry you because i love you! i want you to marry me because you love me! and not in the way you claim but in the way i see you! but for you- but for you this is just a simple ideal arrangement made by the kings of two neighbouring lands of marrying someone you already know and you’ll never love me like i love you-”
the rest of your words died in your throat as seungcheol suddenly covered the distance between the two of you in half a stride, smashing his lips against yours as he completely stole your breath away. your eyes fluttered close as he gently cupped your face, which was a stark contrast to how fervently his mouth explored yours.
his soft, warm lips roamed over yours, licking and sucking at your bottom lip making you feel like your heart was going to explode if you didn’t do something about it. in response to his sudden kiss, you wrapped an arm around his shoulder to pull him in even more closer while the other clutched his soft hair at his nape.
you could feel so many different emotions running through your heart and yet, your mind became completely blank when the two of you finally broke apart, gasping for breath.
for some reason, you couldn’t look up to meet seungcheol’s eyes because you were sure you looked as flushed as you felt so instead you chose to stare at his lips (which was a terrible decision because you immediately got this mental urge to kiss them again).
seungcheol rested his forehead against yours, finally causing you to meet his eyes. he looked at you so softly, so sincerely and with so, so much love that you were sure your knees would have given away if he hadn’t been holding you by your waist.
“i love you.” he whispered, his voice hoarse. “i’ve always loved you. i just didn’t- i just didn’t know how to approach you and this marriage proposal worsened the situation because i was worried you would think i love you just for diplomatic purposes-”
“idiot.” you whispered back, screwing your eyes shut to prevent the tears from forming due to the amount of overwhelming emotions you were feeling right now. “you made me cry so much-”
“i-m so sorry. i’m so, so sorry. i never ever wanted to make you cry. i hate it when you cry because of me. i’m so sorry y/n. i love you so much and i promise you, i’ll never hurt you like this.”
you let out a small chuckle and opened your eyes, giving the man you loved the most in this world a soft smile. he smiled back at you, displaying his dimples (which of course made your heart flutter because how could someone look so handsome and cute at the same time?) before leaning in to press another soft kiss.
“so,” he said, “will you marry me?”

Just a bet Chapter 8
Hey love here is Chapter 8 plz enjoy
Warning: abuse, fluff, flirting if you flinch
       Tuesday, September 25th
You put your things in your locker and take what you need to your class but when you get to the door of the class someone bumps aggressively with your shoulder it seems that they are running and that is why they bumped into you, "Sorry Y/n" Sana apologizes while she is trying to get out the class "it's fine"
you pick your things from the floor and fix your glasses to cover your bruise that looked better today.
"Are you ok?" Chan asks concerned but all the time he looks behind you, his eyes following the female who bumped into you with her eyes puffy and watery
"Yeah I'm good" You look behind you to see if she is still there "ok," he says still not looking at you but passing you, and runs towards the girl that bumped into you crying
Damn...
Everyone looks at you and the drama that just occurred
"What happened?" you ask Mina sitting down at your desk
"Well... it appears that they had a one-night stand 2 nights ago and she thought that they were getting back together but he said no to her" Your eyes widen not being able to comprehend the information that you just received
wow... they slept together, emptiness fills your heart as disappointment gets to you
you get to your seat now feeling worse than this morning being all excited to see him again this morning, but nevermind I need to learn my position and that's just being friends with him and that's all
                                                     9:30 am
You close your notebook and pens thanking heavens you did understand this class but you see Chan rushing into your statistics class you share with I.N, Mina, Yuna, Lia, and Chan
he sighs seeing that he missed the class "I.N did you take notes of the class dude?" he rushes to his seat but sees him sleeping in his table
"hey y/n did you took notes for this class?" you grab your notebook and give it to him and shove past him to get ready to your next class
annoyed, that how you feel in this exact same moment, does he not like you but leading you on? you kept thinking about it all class, is he just playing with your feelings or are you getting ahead of yourself?
You get to your locker and walk towards the cafeteria to buy a cookie to fill your empty stomach, "Hello can I have that strawberry cookie please" You take your cash out and pay the lady who you always see with a shitty attitude.
you get outside and sit below a tree that provides nice shade and a breeze "Hey my favorite girl" you hear that voice that always slurs the l when calling you
"hi, Hyujin," you say and he sits beside you "So.. you have any tea for me?"
you look at him confused "What do you mean?" "well you left with him last week am I right?" he wiggles his eyebrows you chuckle and shake your head
"he has a big dick right?" he remarks as he nods feeling proud of his friend "It's not like that, nothing happened," you say defending yourself
"Nah I don't believe you" he looks at you in disbelief "So he just talked to you and that was it?" you nod "Be for real right now!" he says in disbelief
"I'm not lying to you, he just took me to buy something and then left me home"
"He didn't even kiss you or anything?"
"no why would he, ain't he trying to get back with Sana or something?" you bicker a bit
"ohh you sound jealous" he smirks
"is not like that" you try to lie "Gurl be for real right now, I've known you since we were in school" he makes a sassy face towards you trying "he is just a kind person that's all" you put your chin on your knees hugging them feeling shy about the conversation
"but like I heard Sana and Chan slept together 2 days ago," I say, trying to see if the information is false hopping, it is false
"I don't know about that y/n but I can ask him," he tells me "No don't worry about that" I get scared that maybe he will mention my name while asking
"did it happen again?" he asks me "What happened?" you ask looking at him "Did he... you know hit you again?" you nod
"yeah Chan figured it out and went to buy me some cream for my eye"
"oh, yeah he is like that, but maybe... just don't get your hopes up, because he can be like that, I guess he is nice, or he likes you, at the end, I don't know" you shrug not trying to get your hope up
You always knew Chris was fine, you always saw him walking on the hallways, so you could say he was nothing but a hallway crush, but now that he started to talk to you, you felt important, but maybe your mind is playing tricks on you.
the bell rang so you got up "Bye Hyun-jin" he hugged you, and you felt the pity he gave you in that hug "Remember if you need my help you can call me right? we can call the police again and I will make sure he goes to jail"
he separated himself from you, and you grabbed your bag leaving as well, but you felt eyes looking at you with disgust and jealousy, of course, they were the cheerleaders, Hyunjin's number 1 fans.
I roll my eyes and walk towards my next class
You take your things out of your bag and start organizing your desk, clicking your pen out of boredom, but someone sits next to me nudging my arm with their elbow, it is Lia
she made a warning face, her eyes widening at the problem that was happening next to us
I raise my head and look over to my right, seeing  Jake flirting with Yuna "Seems we have a new couple aboard" she wiggles her eyebrows and I smile teasing Yuna when she makes eye contact with us
I rested my head on my arm again while Lia grabbed her phone, but I felt someone looking at me, I looked forward and I saw Chan looking backward at me, I stared at him while I thrust my head upwards asking if he needed anything, but he just shook his head and positioned himself rightly in his desk, I close my eyes trying to get some rest, but Lia keeps talking to someone until I felt her get up and leave
"Hey, thanks for the notes"

Chapter 16: Connecting the Dots
You've been Cupid for as long as you can remember. You've brought countless soulmates together, yet you've never found love.
When you're assigned to bring two childhood friends back together, it should be simple until you unexpectedly catch feelings for the mysterious and cold Ph.D. student, Dan Heng, the man with a soulmate… the man with answers to your past.
Dan Heng/You

“You’re being threatened?” Stelle’s unexpected revelation almost makes Pom drop his cookie. “By who? Why?”
Stelle fidgets as she says, “I don’t know.” She gets up from the couch and picks up her phone off the coffee table. “I… took a picture of the note.”
Her bottom lip curls inwards as Pom watches her tap her phone a few times. Then, she hands it to him. Upon reading the messy scrawl on the ripped piece of paper, Pom immediately gets goosebumps. However, is it just him, or does the scrawl look a little familiar?
"Do you have any idea who'd do this?" Pom asks. "A fan? A… friend, maybe?” She looks down, hesitant to answer. “Stelle…?”
Finally, she looks at Pom and says, “No. I have no idea who'd do this, but..."
"Does the writing look familiar?"
Stelle is looking away from him when she says, "My brother."
Pom blinks once. Twice. “Caelus? How? Isn’t he, um, studying abroad?”
“I know his handwriting.” Pom takes another look at the photo, and it’s then he feels as if the scrawl mimics someone who’s slowly losing his mind. “His writing isn’t usually messy,” Stelle continues. “But I know it’s his.”
Pom gives her phone back. “But why would he write this? The message itself doesn’t make much sense if he’s the one who wrote it.”
Stelle sighs and leans back. “I… I don’t know, Pom. My dad’s been acting strange. Caelus hasn’t been answering me. I just… I feel like I’m the only one who doesn’t know what’s going on.”
“Acting strange? How?”
“He’s been doing everything he can to keep that article from running.” Stelle looks up at the ceiling. “The Withering supposedly makes people go crazy. With the way my dad’s obsessing over this article”—she scoffs—"the disease is truly making him lose his mind.”
Hold on a minute. Is Stelle supposed to know about the details of The Withering? Pom remembers her father mentioned that he doesn’t know much about it himself besides that it’s rare. Perhaps she read about it somewhere, but Pom still feels like he should ask.
“How do you know it makes people go crazy? Did someone tell you?”
Stelle reaches for a cookie. “Luocha.”
Pom froze. Did he hear that correctly? Luocha? The fake, pretty-boy doctor who was your brother? How does Stelle know about him? Through Caelus or—
"He’s a doctor,” Stelle says.
Finally, Pom takes a deep breath and takes a sip of the tea Stelle prepared moments ago. “How do you know him?”
“He’s my other brother.” Pom chokes on the tea, and he almost drops his cup. Stelle has to quickly take the cup from him and put it on the table. Then, she moves onto the couch he’s sitting on and gives his back a hard pat. “Geez, Pom. Are you okay? What’s gotten into you?”
His heart can’t any more of these surprises or else he’s going to suffer from a fatal heart attack. After hitting his chest a couple of times, Pom asks, “You have another brother? But”—he vaguely gestures to her hair just her in general—”you look nothing alike!”
“He’s—”
A knock comes at the door, and Stelle gets up to answer it. Pom quickly takes out his phone, eager to tell you and Dan Heng this shocking truth. But as he’s typing, he hears a familiar voice that makes his blood run cold.
“A friend?”
“Yeah,” Stelle answers. “His name’s Pom.”
And that’s when Pom sees Luocha come around the corner with Stelle.
“Well, what a small world.” The gentle smile on Luocha’s face makes Pom frown.
“You two know each other?” Stelle asks, looking from Pom to Luocha.
"We're acquainted," Luocha says, looking at Pom. “The last time we met… he was suspicious of me.”
Pom shoots Luocha a look to which the doctor returns with a kind smile.
“Suspicious?” Stelle asks. She looks at Pom. “Why?”
Is this what being cornered feels like? Pom puts his phone aside and says, “You were thinking too much.”
When Stelle’s phone goes off, she picks it up from the counter.” Ah, I need to take this. It’s from my manager. Be right back!”
Neither Luocha nor Pom looks at her as she walks off while answering her phone.
As soon as Pom hears a door close, he immediately asks, “What are you doing here? And... how in the world are you related to Stelle and Caelus?" Then, without thinking, “Does that mean they’re also related to Cupid—”
Luocha smiles. “How much do you know about the past, Pom?” Pom looks up and sees Luocha leaning against the counter. “Or is magic the only supernatural phenomenon you believe in?”
“Sounds like you believe in much more than that.”
“I guess my sister hasn’t filled you in.” Luocha pushes himself off the counter. “I’m talking about my half-sister, by the way. Our beloved Cupid.”
Half sister?
“I know about doppelgangers and reincarnations. I also know about a past life where I lived as Cupid’s brother.”
“You referred to her as your half-sister a few seconds ago,” Pom says.
“Because that’s who she is.”
“How are you so sure?”
Luocha walks over, and Pom instinctively gestures for him to stop with his hand. “D-Don’t come any closer.”
“There’s nothing to be afraid of, Pom. I won’t hurt you.”
“Great. Then”—Pom points to a chair that’s a fair distance away—”you can stay all the way over there.”
Luocha almost rolls his eyes. He doesn't listen, however, and sits on the couch adjacent to the one Pom is sitting on. Pom immediately moves to the end of the couch.
“Caelus was the one who told me,” Luocha says.
“...Caelus?”
“Haven’t you heard? Caelus is getting his memories back.”
Oh, Pom’s heard, of course. But nothing about you.
“And you believe him?” Pom asks skeptically.
“Does he have a reason to lie?”
“He's been hostile towards Cupid. I don’t know why, but he might be telling you things to get you to hate her for whatever reason.”
Luocha leans back and crosses one leg over the other. “Let me ask you something, Pom.”
“...What?”
“If something you were supposed to have was ripped away from you… and you found it in the hands of another person who didn’t cherish it, what would you do?”
“Are you saying Cupid stole something from him? She would never do that!”
“Not her,” Luocha says. “Her father. Or… our father.”
A young Caelus awakened to the sound of muffled conversations in the room right outside of his. He looked over his shoulder and saw his younger sister, Stelle, sleeping soundly. So, he quietly slipped out of bed and put his ear to the sliding door to hear whatever conversation was happening on the other side.
“I don’t… I don’t understand what you’re saying.” A woman raising Caelus and Stelle stood in front of two armoured men. “I am not going anywhere with you.”
“It’s the king’s orders.”
“Has he gone mad?” she snapped. Caelus quietly slid the door open a little. "I have a life here. I’m looking after two children—”
One of the men grabbed her arm. “You’d be doing the kingdom a favour.”
“No! I—”
Caelus fully slid the door open. “L-Let her go!”
The woman gasped. “Caelus!” The man let her go, and she rushed to Caelus’s side. “You're supposed to be sleeping.”
“Who are they?” Caelus asked, nervously looking at the men.
She stood in front of them, blocking Caelus's view. “Just visitors.”
The men looked at each other. Then, one of them unsheathed his sword. “If you don’t come with us, we’ll take the kid instead.”
The woman pushed Caelus behind her. “Leave him out of this.”
“...Or, we’ll kill him.”
Caelus’s eyes widened. What was going on? Where would they take him? Why would they kill him? Caelus nervously looked up at her. After a moment, she turned around and crouched to be at eye level with him.
“...Mommy’s going to be gone for tonight, okay? Just… Just for tonight.”
“Where are you going?”
Caelus could feel her trembling when she put her hands on his cheeks. “To visit… the king.”
“Come,” the man said. “We’re leaving.”
Caelus could feel it in his gut. He couldn’t let her go. So, he grabbed onto her sleeve and said, “Please… Don’t go.”
“I promise… I’ll be back soon.”
As soon as her sleeve left his grasp, his heart fell to the pit of his stomach.
“That was the last time he saw her,” Luocha says.
Pom is at a loss for words. He can only stare at Luocha who’s not looking at him but at the coffee table. Finally, Pom asks, “Who... Who was she? Did he know what happened to her? She must have lived another life or—”
"She was their guardian, and... she was murdered." Pom’s eyes widen. Luocha looks at him. “Do you want to know how I know?”
Pom doesn’t have to give him an answer.
Luocha was still processing everything Caelus was telling him in the hospital room when Caelus suddenly stood.
“...Caelus?” Luocha asked cautiously. Caelus’s eyes had clouded over, and he was swaying as if he had too much to drink. When he stepped forward, he stumbled, and Luocha steadied him, not realizing that he’d touched Caelus’s infected hand.
But that was when it happened.
Luocha saw himself sitting with a man dressed in an elegant hanfu. The men were drinking alcohol, and the older man’s face was becoming more and more flushed.
“I’m so proud of you, Luocha,” the king said with a soft laugh. Then, he downed the alcohol from his small glass. “A doctor who's also a king. You’ll be the first.”
“...I have no interest in becoming king, Father,” Luocha said.
The king slammed the glass on the table. “What are you saying, Luocha? You're my only son! If you won't take over the throne, who will?"
“Sister is getting married to Jing Yuan. I’m sure he would make a fine king.”
“Women cannot carry the family name!”
Luocha poured his father more alcohol despite seeing how red his father was getting.
“I’ve heard some interesting… gossip from the maids,” Luocha said cautiously, watching his father for any kind of reaction. “They said I’m not Mother’s son.”
“How…” A sudden laugh. “...What do they know?” The king downed another glass. Luocha poured him more. “How would they know such a thing?”
“That’s what I’d like to know. Where did this rumour come from? They said Mother was the one who admitted it.”
That was when he saw it: the darkness in his father’s eyes. Coupled with the smile, he looked almost… demonic.
“How dare she,” the king said between drunken laughter. Then, he looked Luocha in the eyes. “My son…”
“...Yes, Father?”
“I"—a hiccup—"I suppose you’re old enough to know.” Then, his father grabbed Luocha’s hanfu and pulled him closer. “But secrets come with responsibilities.”
“It’s true I wasn’t the queen’s son,” Luocha continues. “They had seven children before Cupid. All of them were girls, but they needed a boy.”
Pom does not like where this is going.
“So, he brought in a concubine.”
“W-Wait a minute,” Pom says. “Was this woman…”
“That’s right. It was the woman looking after Caelus and Stelle.”
“But you said she was murdered…”
Luocha’s gaze hardens. “After she gave birth to me, they killed her. Just like what they did with the other girls that came before Cupid.”
Pom’s head suddenly starts spinning, and when he puts a hand on his forehead and closes his eyes, he hears your voice.
“After they killed them, they burned their bodies.”
You knew. While Pom isn’t sure where this is in the timeline, he’s certain that you knew… because you were the one who told him.
“Is this too much for you, Pom?”
Pom looks up and sees Luocha looking at him. “...Cupid knew. She knew about what her father did.”
“And does she know why she was spared?”
The queen cried loudly with one last push. Two maids, who stood on either side of the queen were holding her hands. The one who delivered the baby was cradling a newborn baby girl.
“It’s a girl.” The woman’s voice broke, and the other two maids glanced at each other with a crestfallen expression.
“Let me see her,” the queen said, reaching out.
As soon as the queen saw you, she smiled with tears falling from her eyes.
Hours later, the queen was on her knees in front of the king. Only one maid was in the room, standing near the king with you in her arms.
“Please,” the queen sobbed as she bowed her head so far that her forehead touched the wooden floor. “Please spare her.”
“Why should I?” the king asked. He glanced at you in the maid’s arms. You were surprisingly quiet for a newborn, unlike the others. "Don't tell me you're feeling guilty."
The queen didn't have an answer. Perhaps the guilt had gotten to her. But she sensed something different about you when she held and looked at you for the first time.
“We can keep trying,” the queen said, looking up to meet her husband’s eyes. “I just…” Then, she clenched her fists. “There are other options.”
“What are you getting at?”
“I know of a woman… a single woman looking after two children. She lives a very quiet life. No one would know if she were to go missing.”
“...Missing? Why—” That was when it dawned on the king. Then, he laughed darkly. “I never thought you would resort to such measures.” The king stood and looked at you. “If that is your wish… I will spare her.”
“From the beginning, Cupid had a fate worse than death,” Luocha says.
Before Pom can say anything, the migraine and your voice return…
“She regrets it.”
“...Is that why you’re letting her die?”
“...Are you… are you really on our side?” Pom asks. “If what you say is true, they killed your birth mother. Do you… hate Cupid?”
“I have nothing against my sister,” Luocha says. “She is also a victim.”
“Then why are you working with Jing Yuan?”
Luocha turns to Pom, a stern look in his eyes. “We are not your enemies, Pom. Our worst enemies are ourselves.” When Pom looks away, Luocha continues, “There are still questions I don’t have answers to.”
“You're telling me all of that came back from just one accidental touch?"
"Yes. I don't know why or how, but that was what happened."
Does this mean if Pom also touches Caelus's hand, would his memories also return?
"I wasn't born yet when my father—the one in the present—was infected," Luocha says. "I relied on my mother's diary of the accounts. When he was almost completely paralyzed, he kept telling me of a woman. He started seeing her everywhere as if she was haunting him.”
Was that woman… you, somehow?
“I assumed the disease made him lose his mind as he went on about a past life. But knowing about the locket, meeting Jing Yuan and Cupid and you… I’m convinced.” Pom’s heart begins to race out of anxiety. “The description my father gave back then. It matches her. It matches Cupid.”
“...What happened to your mother?”
“She’s gone.” Luocha exhales sharply. “If Cupid was responsible for The Withering, then she killed more than just my father.”
The silence that follows is loud, almost deafening.
Finally, Pom takes a breath. “After all that, it still doesn’t explain why Caelus hates Cupid. It was her parents who broke apart their family, not her.”
“Call it a hunch, but maybe you can thank Jing Yuan for that.”
◆◆◆
Jing Yuan has just finished a call when he turns his car onto another street. He can’t believe he’s driving halfway across the city for Lan. The god had called him earlier, saying they needed “to talk.”
“Are you breaking up with me?” Jing Yuan deadpanned.
“It’s much worse than that.”
For the past ten minutes, Jing Yuan had tried getting in touch with Luocha—but the man wasn’t answering. Eventually, Jing Yuan gave up and turned his focus to getting to the hospital.
When Jing Yuan’s car rolls to a stop at a red light, he looks to the side and sees a young couple walking on the sidewalk. They are holding hands, and they’d smile at each other. Then, when Jing Yuan blinks once, he suddenly sees you… and him.
It was not long after you and Jing Yuan met that your parents volunteered you to show Jing Yuan around the village. When you saw him, you bluntly said, " You’re not going to the village dressed like that.” Your mother had glared at you, and you frowned. “He looks like he’s going to war. We’re going for a walk, not to a battlefield.”
So, that was how Jing Yuan ended up on a casual village walk with you dressed in a black-and-white hanfu.
You’d just finished telling him about some of the shops you passed by when he said, “You’re very knowledgeable.”
“Well, I grew up here. What did you expect, General?"
“You grew up here, sure, but not everyone knows so much about its history. However, you know all about the ins and outs of everything. It’s fascinating.”
"I guess that's one way to look at it." You smiled at him. "You have manners, General."
"I'm offended you'd think otherwise."
"Just accept the compliment before I change my mind."
"For a princess, you sure are... direct."
"What were you expecting?"
"Is this a trick question?" Then, Jing Yuan suddenly took your wrist, making you stop. “Tell me about this place.”
You looked up. “...The noodle shop?” You raised a brow. “Are you interested in learning about its quality ingredients Or would you like me to tell you their secret of staying in business for more than thirty years?”
“Well if you’re willing.”
“...That was sarcasm.”
“Too late.”
Before you could say anything else, he was walking inside with his hand still around your wrist and you beside him.
A loud honk snaps Jing Yuan out of his thoughts. He shifts the gears and drives off, trying to forget whatever he just remembered.

In an empty area of the hospital, Lan and Dan Heng stand off to the side. You’re sitting on a bench where Lan and Dan Heng can keep an eye on you. You haven’t said much since you left Caelus's room. After Lan had said everyone needed to talk, you had turned to Dan Heng.
“...Sorry,” you said. “I… didn’t mean to hurt him.”
He could see it in your face. It was like you were fighting with something. Dan Heng put his hands on either side of your face.
“Something came back for you,” Dan Heng said. When you looked down, he knew he was right. You put his hands on top of his, and he felt you trembling. “We’ll get through it.”
You looked down, and he wasn’t sure what to make of your silence.
“I had someone look into The Withering,” Lan says, and Dan Heng turns to him. “To conclude, The Withering is the result of black magic. And... it couldn’t have been done alone.”
Nanook had just come out of his quarters with nothing but a towel around his waist when he nearly jumped at the sight of Lan sitting on a chair.
“Who said you could just waltz in here?” Nanook frowned. “What the fuck are you doing in my room?”
“...I need your help.”
Nanook raised a brow. “Are we in danger? Since when does the all-powerful God of the Hunters need my help?”
“It involves Cupid.”
“...Cupid?" Nanook's gaze hardened. "Did something happen to her? Whose ass do I have to beat? Is it Dan—"
“She may have created a curse.”
Nanook’s eyes widened. “...What? Are you messing with me? This is Cupid we’re talking about. Why would she—”
Lan took out a vial with black liquid inside. “I need you to examine this for me.” Nanook walked over and took the vial from him. “It’s a blood sample from an infected human. I can’t match whatever is in it to any curse families I know about.”
“If I help you, you better tell me what’s going on with her.”
“I told him everything,” Lan says. “If I didn’t”—he scoffs—”he’d probably try killing me in my sleep.”
“Why ask Nanook?” Dan Heng asks.
“He’s the God of Destruction. He owns the Grimoire of Black Magic. If there’s anyone who knows something about how The Withering is made, he’s our best chance.”
“...Did he find anything?”
The next time Lan saw Nanook was to get some answer—but Lan was not expecting it to come in the form of a full-blown report.
“It has everything you need to know,” Nanook said. “All the way down to its base components, ingredients, and whatnot.”
“You got all of this from one blood sample?”
“Of course, I also had to do research. Hate to admit it, but the blood sample you gave me did help a lot, though.”
"So, you are useful for something," Lan said, flipping through the notes.
"You're lucky I'm more worried about Cupid than beating your ass right now." Lan looked up and Nanook sighed. “I don’t know what’s going on down here, but are you sure she's the one who created this?”
“Why do you ask?”
“The Withering was created using advanced black magic,” Nanook said. “We're talking top tier." Lan made a gesture for Nanook to get on with his point. "Cupid was human at the time, wasn’t she? There was absolutely no way in hell she could’ve created that.”
A small pause.
“Not on her own.”
Lan narrowed his eyes. “Explain.”
“Black magic is powerful, but advanced black magic is on another level,” Nanook said. “It requires two or more people, depending on what you’re trying to do. To create something like The Withering, a curse in the disguise of a disease, you need a human and a magical being.”
“...Like who?”
“Anyone who’s not human and knows about advanced magic."
Lan glanced down, and his eyes widened when it dawned on him. When he looked at Nanook, the God of Destruction exhaled sharply.
“Don’t have any proof, but the rabbit's lookin' a little suspicious."
Upon making eye contact with Dan Heng, Lan also knows he’s thinking of the same person.
“...Do you know something, Dan Heng?”
“Pom… he said he remembered being a shapeshifter. A shaman… he helped Young put a protection spell on the pendant to keep Cupid safe from Jing Yuan.”
Lan leans against the wall. “A shapeshifter…”
“Were there others like Pom?”
“You wouldn’t know someone is a shapeshifter unless they told you. They were common in folklore, but I’ve never met one before.” Lan looks down as if deep in thought. “If he did help Cupid create The Withering, it would explain why he’s on The Astral Express.”
“...The Astral Express?”
Before Lan can say anything more, the men see you standing, staring straight ahead. When Dan Heng looks in the direction you’re looking at, he sees Jing Yuan who has just reached the top of the stairs.
“Is it just me, or is the atmosphere awfully dreary?”
When Dan Heng is by your side, he notices you’re slightly shaking as Jing Yuan walks toward you. Then, when Jing Yuan is in front of you, he leans down.
“We meet again, Sweet—”
His eyes widen when you swiftly grab his neck without warning—but what frightens him isn’t that you’re choking him. He couldn’t move. He couldn’t even blink. He’s forced to look at you as he suddenly feels a searing pain in his stomach.
“...How does it feel?”
He hears your voice but your lips never moved. His mouth opens but no words would come. Instead, when he finally looks down, he sees himself bleeding from a gaping wound in his stomach. Another voice comes, but this time it’s his own.
“I did it... so you'd never forget me. Hate runs deep, deeper than love."
Jing Yuan falls to the ground, still reeling at whatever it was he just experienced. It felt so real. The metal through his stomach. The blood from his wounds. Then, when he looks up, he sees you and Dan Heng; the murderous look in your eyes Jing Yuan saw moments ago disappeared.
This time, he's sure this feeling is real.
Because looking at you and Dan Heng, it feels like his heart is being ripped from his chest. And the worst part is Jing Yuan has no idea why.
Chapter 17
End notes: I was not expecting Jing Yuan to have such a big role in this story, lol. But through his back story, you will gradually learn about everyone else's, including more about you and Young. This is just the surface, fellas LOL more to come...

Good: got interviewed by the Wall Street Journal (HELLO) about the artificial turf situation and then spent a few hours hanging out with the angry mothers (+ the single cool nb person) at the park and gave them much of my cool park organizing wisdom (and ended up coming up with the name of their organization 💁🏻‍♀️). They’re super enthusiastic, they were really receptive to my ideas, and I’m jazzed to see what they come up with. They’re getting their name, website, and social media gang together and I’m going to hook them up with some park resources so they can turn up to the community board with at least one notch under their belt
Not good: They’re so brand new! None of them know anything about plants! They had never considered trying to clean up the park! They have no idea how the process of [checks notes] ANYTHING works and they’re snotty about it because they assume(d) everyone would immediately jump to address their complaints! ‘The park administrator lady was dismissive of us’ yeah because you were telling her how to do her job when you have no idea what the fuck you’re talking about re: the larger issue. What actions are you presenting besides saying ‘we don’t want you to do this’? You say you don’t want turf but you’ve presented zero alternatives, you have no plan on how to move forward given that construction has already started, you have nothing organized, you presented no factual information just a bunch of highly repetitive and emotional anecdotes including comparing synthetic turf and the lack of a report about its composition to the Soviet government’s handling of Chernobyl!!!!
Very not good: the majority of people know each other from a mother’s group so while we were being, you know, interviewed for a front page story in the WSJ, every! single! one! had their child either attached to their faces like a fucking barnacle or running around and pingponging off their bodies. At one point a little boy walked up a random woman, who was not his mother, and started hitting her leg and screaming I want cookies I want cookies like hello???? Whose fucking kid is this! And she just acted like it wasn’t incredibly annoying and he kept doing it until I said ‘other people are talking you need to wait your turn’ and then he was completely silent until a full five minutes later when his actual mother showed up. She then gave him a) a cookie b) an iPhone to play a video game (full volume) while seated directly next to the WSJ reporter until I suggested they move down the bench. Are you fucking kidding me. This is the metro New York reporter for a newspaper of record interviewing us about a major environmental cause. All of these kids are under THREE YEARS OLD WHY ARE THEY HERE when I’m trying to tell this journalist about the lack of a Parks capital budget!!!!!
Bonus: the park moms were joking that I don’t like kids because I was the only person childless who told a kid to stop behaving badly (insane and authoritarian behaviour To Them) but then they left and a tiny 5 year old girl named Esmé on a scooter zoomed over to me and asked if I would race her because she didn’t have any friends and we chased each other around for a bit while her parents smoked on a bench and she ran over my foot but apologized. When they left, she gave me a single piece of popcorn and two huge hugs and said that we were best buddies 🥺🥺🥺

For your reading pleasure, a ficlet based on @trashcanniballecter ‘s post about "Completely Oblivious to The Fact That He's a Vampire” Steve ~
-
Just before they run into The War Zone, one of the kids finds a sleeve of cookies in the RV. It was stuffed in one of the mostly-bare cupboards. Nancy says they shouldn’t eat it -- that’s stealing. But they’ve already taken a whole home, so what’s one package of cookies added on top?
Dustin has no issues with tearing into it. Max and Lucas are close behind him, stealing handfuls from the package. Erica demands some too. Eddie’s too nervous to eat, but he steals a few sips from an unopened New Coke. Robin eats one of the loose bananas on the counter that’d gotten jostled around in the chase.
Steve takes a look in the dusty cabinet and pulls out a box of soup crackers. The bites in his side are still burning under their bandage, and it’s making him dizzy. But he forces himself to eat anyway, because who knows when they’ll get food next.
He immediately feels sick. He runs out of the RV and throws up behind The War Zone.
It’s just nerves, he tells himself.
They venture back into the Upside Down and Steve feels nothing. He isn’t immediately taken over by what he’s come to think of as symptoms of being in the Upside Down. He doesn’t feel like he’s choking on the stale air or white spores, he doesn’t feel fit to burst out of his own skin, he just feels nothing. He feels normal, almost better than before. The hot summer tarmac in the War Zone made him sick with fever, and the beating sun in the field made him think he might faint. And it’s a good thing he didn’t mention feeling ill, because now he feels so much better, in the dark, in the black. He sticks the landing when he jumps into the opposite version of Eddie’s trailer, and he feels fantastic. He feels better than alive.
Eddie’s bleeding out and Steve is hungry. He’s wracked with stomach pain.
He hasn’t eaten since those stale crackers. And now, leaning over Eddie’s bleeding stomach, he’s hit with a bout of hunger pains so bad Steve almost keels over beside him. They’ll match. Two mangled, bitten bodies. But Steve is the stronger one right now, he has to be.
He guides one of Eddie’s arms over his shoulder, Nancy takes the other, and together with Robin and Dustin following behind they drag their way back to the Gate.
Something is wrong with Eddie. He’s alive, thank god. But he’s different. The bites have changed him. He’s healed so fast the doctors don’t know what’s going on. El’s doctor-friend from the Lab, Dr. Owens, has Eddie moved to a new facility when it becomes clear that something all-together inhuman is happening. Steve doesn’t mention that his own wounds seem to be healing a bit quickly, too. He’s fine now, and Eddie’s the priority anyway, so he just keeps his mouth shut.
He makes himself useful by staying at Max’s bedside, holding her hand to let her know he’s still there. He makes the other kids eat, even though he himself hasn’t eaten for days. He still doesn’t have the stomach for it. He tries reading The Hobbit to Eddie, still in a coma of his own even with his healing wounds. Steve reads aloud, stumbling over some difficult tongue-twistery passages, but he keeps going none-the-less. He’s been meaning to read it ever since Dustin wouldn’t shut up about it, and now he has a quiet audience.
“Do you wish me a good morning,” Steve reads, “or mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not; or that you feel good this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on?”
“All of them at once, I suppose.”
Steve almost passes out. Eddie’s voice is rough and mangled. He sound like a completely different man. Something earth-made, something new.
“Don’t stop reading on my account, Harrington.” Eddie tries smiling but it’s all teeth. Like he doesn’t know how to move his mouth around the new protrusions splitting from his gums. They’re sharp.
Steve drops the book.
Eddie is a vampire. At least that’s what Dustin shouts dramatically, when he storms into the hospital room. Everyone shushes him, but no one disagrees. Because what else could he be? The doctors have run tests. Owens has been in and out all day, nurses have been taking blood samples, checking his mostly-healed wounds. They’re raised and angry still, red welts that Eddie says still burn all the time, but they look much better than they should given how fresh they are. They look like Steve’s.
Eddie throws up when he tries to eat a pudding cup. He nearly faints as soon as they wheel him into the little hospital garden for some fresh air. His new sharp teeth glint with spit in the sun and Steve can feel the pushing of something in the back of his own mouth. Two things actually. First and always, the hunger that never goes away no matter how much food he tries to eat. And sometimes, he feels pushing in the softness of his gums. He looks in the hazy hospital mirror and the skin around his canines are an angry, pulsing red, like something new is trying to make its way through.
It only takes Eddie a few days to notice.
“It’s happened to you too, hasn’t it?”
He’s interrupted Steve’s reading. They’ve just gotten to the part where the Company is about to be eaten by giant spiders.
“What’s happened?” Steve asks, and silently hopes that Eddie is just talking about the fact that Steve’s starting to become a bit of a nerd for this book, and not anything else.
“You’re not eating,” Eddie says. And it’s not a question, it’s a fact. “You don’t go on walks with the others, you’ve barely left the hospital in days. And that one time we tried to go out you looked like you were about to puke. And your teeth.”
“My teeth?”
“They’re like mine.”
“Are they?”
“They will be. At this point I’m pretty sure of it.” Eddie presses his lips together. “It’s like, I can feel you.”
Steve swallows. “You can?”
“Don’t let this inflate your ego too much, Harrington, but you’re pretty hard to miss. Even before all this, it was hard to miss you. But now it’s like. Even when everything else is blurry or I feel sick, or I feel hungry enough to die, there’s still you.”
Eddie’s right and Steve knows it. He knows it because he feels Eddie, just the same. He thought maybe it was just their new little trauma-bond, the one he shared with all the rest of the Party. Or he thought maybe it was because Eddie is just a bit loud, a bit much, and Steve will admit, a bit too pretty to ignore. But he knows it’s something else too. In his blood, he can feel Eddie lingering.
When they’re across the room from each other, he can still hear Eddie’s breath.
“Why am I not, I don’t know, a full vampire yet? I was bit before you.”
“I think it’s because...” Eddie bites his lip and his too-long teeth cut into the skin, “I think it’s because I died. I actually died, and maybe that just made it go faster? The transformation or whatever we’re gonna call it. And they took a lot less out of you than they did me.”
Unbidden, Steve opens his mouth and presses a finger against one burning canine. They still burn all the time, and his veins never stop pleading to be fed. But at least now he’s not alone. He’s not alone, and Eddie knows him. They’re something inhuman, not earth-made, but at least they’re together. They have the scars to show for it.

come back... be here | ni-ki
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
✧ synopsis: working at a cafe can be really fun: the customers being nice, cracking jokes with your coworkers, singing while brewing coffee and so on. but it's even more fun when two members of the staff bicker and fight all day and keep everyone entertained. that's what  hybe cafe is like, thanks to ni-ki and y/n.
⋆10 my little chai tea sugar cookie (written 0.7k)
after a long day at work, y/n finally got to her house. she knew that everyone would already be there, and by everyone she meant her brother, yeonjun and beomgyu.
as she entered the door, as expected, she was welcomed by a bunch of screams, but the only one she could clearly distinguish was yeonjun's. the bly had some strong vocal cords.
beomgyu came running to her, using her body as a shield
"he is trying to put an end to my life y/n!" he screamed
that's when yeonjun came into the picture, armed with a pillow that was swinging around
"you stole my last strawberry gum!" the oldest screamed back while trying to get to beomgyu who was still hiding behind y/n
as y/n was about to tell the two menaces to calm down, soobin stumbled into the entry-way, with a dirty cloth draped on his shoulder and a pot in his hand
"THAT'S IT YOU GUYS ARE PAYING FOR MY MAC AND CHEESE"
the three boys started running one after the other, trying to get revenge in any way.
during these caos, soobin with his dirty pot, bumped into y/n, who still hadn't said a single word since she entered the house. and in that moment, the guys stopped and all that could be heard was silence
"if you don't give me mac and cheese right now and SHUT THE FUCK UP i'm going to kill every one of you" she said in a calm threatening tone.
and the three man did just that: they quickly and diligently stopped acting like little kids and prepared her food. they ate all together, the atmosphere now calm.
after dinner they decided to play just dance for a while. as expected y/n and yeonjun won, both only getting "mega star" level. y/n wasn't called the "mega star queen" for nothing.
after a pause, beogyu told y/n to follow him and they got to her room
"so" said the boy "do you have something to say"
"not really" she responded
"do you like ni-ki" he asked. he was very straightforward, fortunally for y/n who always would beat around the bush, to scared to say what was on her mind"
"i mean, he is funny sometimes and he is very beatuiful but i wouldn't say i like him, not in that way at least"
"and your tweet?"
"he was cute"
"sure"
"it's true! beside i think he hates me, kinda? i know that bickering is our thing and i really enjoy it cause it's fun but sometimes i feel like there's some truth to what he says"
"i don't think so, you should see his smile when he turns around after talking to you"
"nah, he hates me"
"whatever, i know i can't change your mind when you overthink, even if you are wrong" the boy said "and kai?"
"i don't actually like him, he is just a pretty person i would like to know" she explained " it's kind of a bit to myself and myself only"
"i knew it! he isn't really your type"
"who is my type then?" the girl asked, wanting to know how much her best friend knew her
"ni-ki"
in y/n's mind a big yellow sign with an exclamation point showed up.
"shut up, i'm going to sleep" she said
"good night my little chai tea sugar cookie with red sprinkles on top" beomgyu said
"taylor'a cookies?"
"exactly, we will make them tomorrow"
"good night to you too my little chai tea sugar cookie with red sprinkles on top"
soobin, having heard the last bits of their convo whispered "they are so weird"
and yeonjun to that reponded "you are just jealous that you are no one's little chai sugar cookie with sprinkles on top"
"sure"
"but you are my little french toast with maple syrup and a cappuccino in the side" the oldest said, giving a squeeze to the younger's cheek

of course, over the years, the whole family kind of knows that mooch isn’t the best at making friends/doesn’t have many. but the one thing that makes them all realize how bad it is, is one day when jack really snaps at her about following him and trevor around (like in the last anon, but a little older). it happens one day, when mooch is just minding her own business, and she hears jack and a few of his ntdp friends walk through the front door. she doesn’t immediately run to the front door, but after a while of listening to them, having fun, she wants to join too. so she kind of runs up to jack and taps him on the shoulder, and is like “what are you guys playing, and can i join?” now at this point, jack is also having his angsty teenage boy phase (but it affects mooch a little more because she’s older too). anyway, there’s no build up, he just leads straight in to “no squish, go hang out with your own friends.” (not sure if this is this au, but i think we’ve talked about mooch having it rough in high school). mooch freezes, and so do all of jacks friends. she just kind of pauses, collects herself, and responds “i can’t” while looking at her feet mumbling. jacks instantly like “what do you mean, it’s not that hard. just pick up your phone and call your own friends.” now mooch is mad, but no one really knows everything about the friend thing, so they’re a little confused. she sprints to grab her phone, and throws it at his chest “who am i gonna call? quinn? lucky? tyler? or can i not talk to them because they’re your friends too?” and jack doesn’t respond, because he’s stunned, scrolling through mooch’s contacts. there’s…. maybe 5 people in her contacts that aren’t her teammates, her brothers teammates, or her brothers. and 3 of the 5 have moved away (as seen with the “in florida” and “from texas” beside their names). and seeing as he’s too stunned to speak, she continues, “yeah, take a real close look and tell me what friends i can call. that’s right, there are none. so sorry for me trying to fill a gap that I can’t seem to fix with your friends. god forbid I enjoying hanging out with people who have similar interests to me, and share a mutual love and appreciation for one of the most important people in my life.” and jacks just appalled, because he’s never seen the “shy” side of mooch, aka the mooch who has horrible trust issues because everyone wants her for her brothers in high school. he goes in for a hug, but she just disappointedly shakes her head and runs off. jack stops bringing his friends around so often, trying to get closer to mooch, but nothing really seems to work. a few more hang outs between jack and his friends go by, before mooch tries to shoot her shot again, and is surprised when she’s met with a “of course squishy!” they have a heart to heart after the hangout is over with, and it’s mooch just sobbing, “i’m sorry i can’t make friends, i’ll try harder, but thank you for not yelling at me this time.” and jack is just stunned because he’s now kind of seen how bad it was, but this seals the deal. after all of that, mooch becomes the first name on any hangout invite, and jack doesn’t regret it because he’s never seen mooch smile this big.
-🫂
jack feels so bad that mooch thinks it’s her fault she doesn’t have friends when she tries so hard. she just cries to jack about how she’s nice, she invites people to the mall, she brings cookies, but no one wants to be her friend for her.

Here’s my fic for @thunder-pride lesbian day in which Kayo and Gordon are disasters and Penelope is just very confused.
AO3 link
The first twelve years of Kayo’s life passed blissfully unaware of all the complicated aspects of identity. She had a vague idea of romantic love and had already decided that she wanted nothing to do with the notion for a number of reasons but mostly because the idea of kissing a guy was gross.
Besides, she had to put up with enough boys at home where her brothers were loud and annoying and did disgusting things like dare each other to eat bugs or (even worse) Grandma’s cookies. The boys at school were even worse - at least her brothers could be nice. So, no, she was quite happy by herself thank you very much.
And then Gordon chose to watch Pirates of the Caribbean for movie night and she was introduced to Elizabeth Swann.
Kayo wasn’t sure if she wanted to be with her or be her. She was everything; beautiful, clever, feisty, could handle herself and okay, so maybe the idea of kissing Elizabeth Swann sounded quite nice actually. This posed an issue because girls weren’t supposed to want to kiss other girls… were they?
She stuffed her mouth with popcorn to give herself an excuse not to talk and proceeded to ignore those feelings, which worked brilliantly until several years later when a certain Lady Penelope Creighton-Ward smiled at her for the first time and a swarm of butterflies immediately materialised in her stomach.
Oh no.
In her defence, she wasn’t entirely oblivious. She had come to accept the fact that she was attracted to women even if the idea still scared her. She was different enough already, what if this was the final straw? Sorry, you’re too much. God, no. There was a reason why she’d tried to repress her feelings for so many years with the exception of one high school party featuring underage drinking and fumbled hands in a dark room with one another sworn to secrecy.
Unfortunately, her sexuality was the one thing she couldn’t run from, as was fast becoming clear as her vocal chords spontaneously decided to strangle themselves. She opened her mouth and let out a curious squeak.
There was a flash of something in Penelope’s eyes. “Are you quite alright?”
“I…”
John had once rambled about event horizons. It was the boundary around a black hole beyond which no radiation or light could escape; a point which no longer affected the observer. Kayo absently wondered whether she could fall into her own event horizon if she internally cringed any harder.
Um, hello? Voice? Brain? Form words, please.
“You’re nice. I mean, it’s nice. To meet you.”
Oh my god. Kill me now.
Penelope frowned.
“I don’t mean that you’re not nice,” Kayo hastily amended. “I’m sure you’re very nice. Not that I’m assuming. We don’t know each other yet. But I’d like to get to know you.”
Stop talking, Tanusha, oh my god.
“As friends. Not in a weird way.”
Oh yeah, totally saved it.
Penelope’s expression twitched as she attempted to refrain from laughing. “I look forward to getting to know you too. Something tells me that we’re going to make an excellent team.”
Kayo bit back her immediate question of what exactly do you mean by that? She imagined physically clawing back the words, locking them away in her chest where they couldn’t embarrass her. God knew she could already feel heat prickling across her neck which couldn’t be blamed on sunburn.
She wiped her hands against her jeans – oh my god, did my handshake seem weirdly sweaty? – and fixed a neutral expression on her face. Penelope’s gaze remained fixed on her and for a brief moment her world consisted entirely of impossibly blue irises until her heart sort of hiccupped and she was jolted back into the present. Oh god, why couldn’t she stop staring? She tore her gaze away and spied a distraction… or, you know, a victim. She had never been so glad to see Gordon in her life.
“Have you met Lady Penelope?”
It was miracle that her voice managed to remain steady. An even greater miracle was the way Gordon also forgot how to speak and promptly resembled a ripe tomato. Somehow, he made an even greater fool of himself than she had. At least she’d managed to stay on her feet. Really, it was Gordon’s own fault for wearing those stupid sandals everywhere; he’d worn down the soles so much that they caught on the slightest rough surface and sent him head-over-heels, such as right now.
“Careful!” Penelope caught him before he could faceplant. “Are you alright?”
“Oh, hey.” Gordon grinned wolfishly at her. “Looks like I fell for you.”
Yes, Kayo silently cheered. This is great! Keep embarrassing yourself! Make me seem like I’ve got my life together in comparison.
There was a brief silence in which Gordon slowly registered what he’d just said. That stern warning from Grandma that his mouth running faster than his brain would eventually get him into trouble suddenly seemed very real. He jolted backwards with a strangled yelp.
“I mean, uh, I- Thanks. I… have to go.”
“What a coincidence,” Kayo said sunnily, grabbing his arm before he could bolt. “So do I. We have… that thing.”
“Right!” Gordon nodded frantically. “That super important thing which we should definitely go and do. Like, right this second.”
Penelope stared after them, utterly bemused. “It was lovely meeting you!”
“Likewise,” Kayo called over her shoulder as Gordon dragged her out of the room.
Nothing was said until they had fled to his bedroom and closed the door behind them. Gordon flopped facedown on the floor and spread his arms like a grieving octopus, complete with a desolate wail. Kayo dropped onto the bed and drew her feet up to sit cross-legged. Maybe the sheer act of sitting in the lotus position would have calming properties even if she didn’t meditate.
“So,” she ventured after a few seconds of silence. “That could have gone better.”
Gordon made a vague, pitiful sound not unlike a dog when someone trod on its tail. Kayo was torn between laughing and screaming. She tipped onto her back and stared up at the ceiling with a heavy sigh.
“I’m a useless lesbian,” she declared.
“I’m just useless,” Gordon mumbled into the carpet.
She rolled onto her front and propped her chin in her hands. Gordon made no attempt to move from the floor which was a bold decision give his room could be considered a certified biohazard. Kayo could spy at least five wrappers and a mouldy plate from here alone.
“It’s fine,” she decided aloud. “She probably meets lots of people every day. I doubt she’ll even remember us by this time next week.”
“Really?”
“Nope. We suck.” Kayo buried her head in her hands with a slowly dawning sense of utter humiliation. “People make first impressions within seven seconds or less of meeting someone. She’s never going to forget us and not in a good way.”
There was another pause.
Gordon let out an exaggerated groan. “You know what I love about you, Kay? Your eternal optimism.”

YOTO: July
Leonie/Bernadetta. Stars/friends to enemies to lovers.
The first time Bernadetta spots Leonie out by the little fishing lake is after Jeralt dies.
She sits on the edge of the dock, with her naked toes just grazing the surface to barely kiss the water.
Bernadetta originally snuck out of her room to snag some cake from the mess hall. But as she was creeping along the path, humming to herself, she heard a sniffle, then a sigh and saw Leonie seated there at the dock.
Bernadetta doesn’t talk to her, just observes her from her perfect little hiding spot outside Petra’s room. The shadows shield her enough from Leonie’s view. It’s been raining for the last few days so the air is very humid and there’s little relief; but the sky has opened up and there’s only wispy remnants of storm colours.
Bernadetta has never seen the stars shine so brightly. Varley is an arid region, but the skies are mostly covered by smoke from the factories that produce their weapons. Swords and scriptures, that’s what her people are known for.
She wants to open her mouth to ask if Leonie’s okay, because Bernadetta concerned and Leonie is Leonie. She’s like a hornet, strong, fast, zippy. Once, when she was sitting in on a lancing lecture to pass a horse backing riding exam—mandatory as she skipped so many of her assigned shifts in the stables—Leonie got hit several times by Dimitri of all people and did nothing more than stagger back and yell at him “again”. She even went as far as to taunt him, asking “is that all you got?”
Something inside Bernadetta—probably her anxiety—tells her that this is treacherous.
Maybe Leonie doesn’t want visitors? Maybe she came out here for peace and air?
Before she knows it, she’s calling out her name softly. “Leonie? Are you… um… okay?”
There’s a distinctly snotty sound and then Leonie vehemently insisting she’s alright, she’s okay in a salty, tear-streaked voice that insists she’s not okay.
Bernadetta stands in the dark night and says, “I don’t… um… know what you’re going through but uh… M-Maybe cake would help?”
“Cake?”
Bernadetta feels stupid. “Ye-Yeah. Cake always makes me feel a little better. And watching the stars.”
Leonie pauses.
“I-I was just going to go watch some. B-But maybe we could. Um. Watch the stars together?”
“That sounds good.” Leonie’s voice is small.
Bernadetta hurries and gets two slabs of cake—eating a bit of hers on the walk back—some stale cookies and thermos of tea to bring back to Leonie. She settles in beside her, but not to close and pushes the cake and cookies closer to her. Leonie finds it in her to laugh, and says “You can come closer, Bernadetta, I’m just crying, not sick.”
Bernadetta sheepishly slides closer along the dock. Panic rises inside her but it feels different this time. She fights back and tells it that it will not best her. “A-Are you okay?” Then admonishes herself. “S-Stupid Bernie, of course you’re not okay…”
“No, don’t worry.” Leonie runs a hand over her face, pushing back her bangs. “I’m just missing Jeralt. Captain… Captain Jeralt.”
“Oh.”
“He was sorta like a dad to me.” Leonie confesses softly, then mutters, “but I guess you figured that out already.”
“Sorta, yeah.”
There’s a silence between the two of them for a moment before Bernadetta squeezes her eyes shut tight and says, “I called Alois ‘Dad’ by accident.”
Leonie’s brow furrows and she sputters out a little choked laugh that’s obviously half-forced, half-genuine. “Do I wanna know?”
“Um… my father… He isn’t good to me.” She’s careful with her words, for she thinks that they’ll get back to him somehow. “Alois reminded me of my uncle, Francois. I always felt comfortable around him… I called him father a few times.”
Leonie looks at her like she understands what Bernadetta means. Her hand clasps over Bernadetta’s and for once—and at the perfect time—Bernadetta doesn’t flinch. “My old man wasn’t good to me either. Jeralt was.”
“We’re lucky to have them… Aren’t we?” Bernadetta asks.
Leonie’s voice cracks again. “Yeah. We are.”
“Stars are pretty tonight.” Bernadetta says.
Leonie nods. “Yeah. They are.”
Leonie is dragging Bernadetta back to her horse. Well, not dragging, but leading her back with her hand in Bernadetta’s. It’s late at night, after lights out. Leonie insists that she’s found the perfect spot to stargaze and when Leonie is right, she is right.
Bernadetta is shy and nervous and demure and ladylike. When Leonie told her of the plan during the lecture on tactics during battle, Bernadetta’s eyes sparkled in wonder and she murmured in curiosity if it was the same spot that Caspar took her to. She brought a little fabric knot of snacks—stolen hard cheese and bread—and her sketchbook with some thick charcoals.
“W-Would you let me draw you?” Bernadetta asks nervously. Leonie can’t help but think she looks pretty with that crimson blush and wide eyes. In the back of her mind, she wishes that Bernadetta was a little braver, not for Leonie but for herself.
“I’ve never had someone draw me.” Leonie muses. “So yeah, of course.”
The horse is tied up beneath a tree and Leonie half expects to be posed like an elegant lady—in the back of her mind, she wishes that Bernadetta does that, fluffing up her messy hair, lacing her hands in her lap, tilting her chin up while murmuring ‘now look at me’. But her hair is short and her face is round and her clothes are mismatched compared to Bernadetta’s pretty eyelet nightgown and the little sweater over top of it.
Bernadetta is on her feet and pulls her up, she’s much stronger than Leonie expected. She drags Leonie next to the horse and then instructs her to braid its mane. “Or whatever you do around them. Just act natural.” Bernadetta insists. Her voice is giddy. “Like you’re just in the stables.”
Leonie does so, but it’s hard to act natural when Bernadetta’s big eyes are focused on her. But they’re not focused on her per se; they’re focused on a spot next to her, in a space that isn’t hers. Does that make sense?
In a half hour, Bernadetta has a sketch and is showing Leonie it as they eat stolen cheese and bread and gaze at the stars. “I-It’s not even my best work.” Bernadetta says. “It looks quite bad really. Oh goddess you hate it—”
Leonie rests a hand on Bernadetta’s shoulder. “No, Bernadetta. I love it.”
Bernadetta’s face goes red and she hides her face in her hands in embarrassment. She murmurs something unintelligible, and when Leonie asks her again, Bernadetta practically yells, “I’ll come to Sauin and paint you proper someday!”
That makes Leonie smile for real, perhaps for the first time since Jeralt died.
Bernadetta isn’t a gambler, but when she does play cards, she’s a shark. Her mind is hardwired for mathematics, for chance and probability. It’s probably why she’s so good at judging when to run and hide and when it play it safe.
Leonie however, likes to gamble only when she knows she’ll win. And while she and Bernadetta are friends, one of them is rich and the other is very poor. Leonie looks like she’s got the upper hand, a cute little smirk and sharp glimpse of the eye, and Bernadetta pulls out a 15-ten, launching her ahead of Leonie and into the final peg.
Leonie sighs and hands slides the little gold marks to Bernadetta. “You’re too good at this.” She sighs. “Crib isn’t my game.”
“Don’t say that.” Bernadetta insists, taking the change and rattling it in her hand. “I th-think I have enough to get us some tea.”
“We can have tea back under the gazebo. The professor won’t mind sharing some leaves, and I’m sure if you ask Lorenz for a teapot he’ll lend it. He’s got like twenty or something. Probably.”
Bernadetta pouts and shakes her head. “I won! I want to treat you.”
“Isn’t that a waste of money?”
“Shouldn’t you hush and let me treat you?”
Leonie can’t fight the logic in that and shuts up. But before they can get down to the tea shop down below in town, Bernadetta’s anxiety spikes. “I don’t think I can do it.” She mumbles and grabs Leonie’s hand for support.
Both girls blush hard. Bernadetta feels a little stronger when Leonie squeezes it back and tells her that it’s okay, that they can to another time. But Bernadetta is adamant. She wants to give Leonie something. They pass a flower seller and Bernadetta, overcome with energy and courage actually asks the seller for a bouquet of sunflowers. Her words come out in one breath, in sentences that linger along and make Leonie wonder why she’s never like this around her. Bernadetta comes running back with an armful of stalky blooming sunflowers that reflect their golden-yellow light back onto her pallid face.
She thrusts them at Leonie and says, “H-Here! For you!”
Leonie’s never had flowers given to her before. Back home in Sauin when Saint Cethleann day hit—which was typically recognized as a day to celebrate forms of love—people would always exchange flowers. Leonie never got a single one, aside from her mother but that doesn’t really count.
Leonie blushes hard and takes them from Bernadetta, murmuring a barely audible, “thank you.” Bernadetta must not notice her blush, for she turned away quickly. It’s a huge stack and Leonie plucks one, a small one that was plucked before it had fully bloomed so the petals are still small and holds it out to Bernadetta.
“But they’re for you.” She protests.
“And I’m giving you one.”
Bernadetta vehemently refuses, all the way up to the monastery. That night, when Leonie’s doing a final walk before bed, she takes the small sunflower and leaves it out in front of Bernadetta’s door.
The next morning, when Leonie’s the first one up and doing her morning stretches, she walks past Bernadetta’s door and smiles when she sees the sunflower gone.
Bernadetta is hiding behind a table of hors d’oeuvres at the ball. She hasn’t danced yet, refuses everyone until Leonie comes over and takes her hand and pulls her to the floor. Bernadetta was never a great dancer, always too jumpy and quick, which is why she’s probably a great archer. Leonie’s always been light on her feet but uncoordinated when it comes to dancing.
So instead of the floor, where they’ll surely bump into people and piss them off, Leonie takes Bernadetta outside where they spin in the grass and collapse in the blades laughing and dizzy.
And then, as Bernadetta’s about to get up, Leonie leans in and kisses her.
It’s a short burst of a first kiss that makes both girls burn bright red and their hearts pound so loudly that they can hear it in their ears.
All Leonie can think of is “Oh goddess, oh fuck I’m so stupid, oh goddess,” in a repetitive loop.
Meanwhile, Bernadetta is staring off into space like she’s zoning out, her mind awash with “Well, everything makes sense now.”
Leonie’s mouth opens to apologize, to sputter out apologies like what Bernadetta would do; but as she begins to speak, the words die against Bernadetta’s lips as she kisses her again and again.
“The stars are prettier in Sauin.” Leonie says.
Bernadetta can’t help but believe her. They’re probably so much prettier against the open fields and bright skies. Wildflowers in the vale. The skies in Varley are shit in comparison, always covered up and smoky.
“I want to see them one day.” Bernadetta tells her.
Leonie presses a kiss against her temple. “I’ll show you. Promise, Bern.”
Bernadetta curls into her chest, her arms snaking around Leonie’s waist tightly. Leonie laughs and it reverberates through Bernadetta’s entire body. She feels warm, she feels at home.
“I’ll hold you to it, Sunflower.”
Leonie developed a taste for alcohol young. From fine brandy to shitty moonshine, she isn’t picky. But she honestly prefers it in her mouth instead of washing it over open wounds.
She’s had a stash of gin—not her favourite but it does the trick pretty quick—that’s just right to clean broken skin and wounds. She keeps it stashed in her boot, probably negating its purpose.
The arrow is lodged in Bernadetta’s thigh and she’s been unconscious for a while. She slumped over into Leonie and her grip went limp about twenty miles away from Varley Manor. Edelgard had ordered them to retreat if things looked bad, and things really started looking bad. Leonie had a feeling that the monastery would be either taken by the church and kingdom or overrun with wounded so she ran. It was the bravest thing she could do.
Leonie grabbed Bernadetta by the waist and hauled her up onto her horse, ignoring her yelp and her cries that Petra was left behind, that Petra was going to die and leave her siblings behind, that she needs to help Petra—
Leonie had grabbed Bernadetta’s hands and told her, in a low tone, a warning tone, a tone that she hated, “We can’t help Petra if we die.”
That sobered Bernadetta up. “I’ll guide Bennet. You focus on protecting Petra.” Leonie ordered.
Bernadetta nodded, her eyes glistening with tears. The two became a cohesive unit—Leonie guiding the horse, Bernadetta nocking arrows and protecting Petra from a distance as best as she could. Leonie circled around the town of Garreg Mach, fully intending to get back up to where Petra was so that Bernadetta could take Bennet and speed off to safety and Leonie could jump off and help Petra, who was surrounded.
Just as they were rounding the battlefield, another archer came outta nowhere. They missed Leonie but hit Bernadetta with a shrieking cry that made Leonie’s ears pop and Bernadetta drops her bow and cuss loudly.
Instincts drove Leonie to get the fuck off the field. Healers were scarce and her own vulnerary stash was near-depleted from a particularly nasty hit from Alois, who had nearly taken out Bernadetta. Leonie had seen it coming, saw the panic and fear in Bernadetta’s eyes, and remembered that one time, down at the lake, where Bernadetta recalled how similar he was to her uncle.
So Leonie had jumped in, Leonie had taken the hit and then knocked the shit out of Alois, ignoring the fact that he had a wife and child at home, ignoring the connection he had with Bernadetta, ignoring the fact that he had mentored her in axe-throwing when she first got to the academy.
Ignoring that he too had lost Jeralt.
Leonie snapped the reins and directed Bennet—who had been startled by Bernadetta’s high-pitched scream—away from the field.
“Okay Bernie, okay,” Leonie’s voice was uneasy, and she was trying her best to make it calm. Bennet got scared and in between soothing Bernadetta and the horse, Leonie was stretched thin. “Talk about something. Tell me anything, come on, Bernie!”
Bernadetta was half-sobbing, half-screaming and began spilling the entire story of a five-part saga about a hunter and a princess, a Cinderella story of sorts. Leonie took the reins in one hand and searched for the vulnerary that she tucked into her pockets and fished it out. She handed it back to Bernadetta who chugged the rest of it and cringed.
When Leonie realizes that the gin is in her pocket.—Leonie kept her talking by asking about the book she’s writing. Each time her voice got too faint, Leonie would shift the reins into one hand and clutch Bernadetta’s arm hard and ask, more like yelling over the hoofbeats, “okay Bern, what happens next? What happens next?”
When Bernadetta doesn’t answer, Leonie panics. Leonie isn’t used to panicking. Her mind goes through the motions of control, of what’s right, what’s logical.
We need to stop.
She pulls hard on the reins and the horse halts, whinnying in protest. Leonie hops down from the horse and Bernadetta almost falls.
Leonie braces Bernadetta and helps her down as best she can. In a panic, Leonie undoes the cloak around her waist and bunches it up to make a shitty little cushion. She tucks it under Bernadetta’s hips. Elevation. Elevation is key.
She searches for a pulse, her breath. She’s breathing but shallow, and her pulse is weak.
Leonie stumbles over cusses. The vulnerary only did so much, and it wasn’t enough. First aid, she needs first aid. But pulling the arrow out makes a breeding ground for infection. And pulling out the arrow is not a good idea for the extra blood loss.
Now, she’s wishing she paid more attention to Lorenz in between his patronizing comments and remarks as he tried to teach her white magic. Leonie was almost hopeless. Guy was a jerk most of the time but he knew what he was talking out.
All she has is here and now. Stop the bleeding. She orders herself. She has to stop the bleeding before Bernadetta’s weak pulse goes flat and she stops breathing.
Leonie grabs the cloak and bunches it around the arrowhead. Bernadetta’s body flinches instinctively and Leonie feels uncomfortable hope. Don’t get ahead of yourself Pinelli. She warns.
The professor would know what to do. She keeps thinking that Byleth would tell her what to do. But Professor Byleth is back on the front lines with Edelgard.
She dodges those thoughts as deftly as she can and searches the packs for alcohol. Leonie developed a taste for alcohol pretty young. Bernadetta did too, though she can’t hold her booze.
Leonie waterfalls it into her mouth and bitter, intense juniper and florals run over her tongue to take the edge off, breathes a sigh and steadies herself.
“I’m sorry Bern.” She says before dousing her thigh in gin. Before the alcohol washes over her broken skin, Leonie is murmuring white magic spells, tripping over the words  and half-crying because she can’t lose Bernadetta. She can’t. Bernadetta has to live because Leonie’s lost too much already—
Bernadetta shocks awake and stares at Leonie, eyes dazed and unable to hold Leonie as her focus. Leonie doesn’t care. Instead she’s sobbing and clutching onto Bernadetta and praising the all stars in the sky that the stupid spell worked.
Bernadetta tries to slow her thundering heart but she can’t. Camping sounded more fun on the first night, but after a week, her back is aching and she’s struggling to find a comfortable way to stretch out without kicking Leonie.
The idea, at first, was to try and get to Varley where they could hide out. Bernadetta remembers a few empty houses that they could wait out in for a few days until the monastery is recovered and they can contact the professor.
But after a few days, Bernadetta sends a message by express to the professor asking for instructions and gets nothing back. And worse, every time she tries to remember the way home to Varley it gets foggier. She’s blocked part of it out, the pathways and vale that’s cloaked in thick, jet-black pines. It would be easier if she could just fucking remember.
She begins to get worried when Leonie gets frustrated with her inability to remember. Leonie will ask questions over and over, trying to figure out a solution, but each time Bernadetta cries out that she doesn’t know or can’t remember, Leonie’s patience burns away.
At least they’re going back into imperial territory. Most of the noble houses bound together and are in agreement to fight against the church and Kingdom, but there’s still dissenters and Bernadetta is constantly on the edge of a panic attack.
Their plan becomes treacherous and after a week of camping with stolen blankets and in dirty clothes, Bernadetta is done.
“I can’t remember the way home.” She says into Leonie’s back.
Leonie stirs a little. Her voice is distant. “You can’t?”
”No.”
“Seriously?”
“I can’t, I’m sorry, Leonie, I can’t.”
“Can you remember the path you took up to the monastery.”
“No.” Bernadetta’s voice gets shaky. “I… I was pretty much shoved in a bag and carried there, I remember nothing. I’m sorry Leonie, I’m sorry.”
Leonie sighs and sits up. Bernadetta stares at her frame, lit by the stars. Her freckles melt into her skin and disappear; shame, for they were Bernadetta’s favourite part of her, they looked like a tiny sky painted across her cheeks and down her neck.
“Then you have to go back to Edelgard.”
Bernadetta sits up. “M-Me? What about you?”
Leonie is cold and quiet. “I can’t go back.” Her voice is defeated. “Claude needs me.”
“You’re deserting? She’ll kill you.“ Bernadetta says desperately. Her hand finds Leonie’s and holds it tight. “Leo, I can’t—I-I-I won’t… Don’t…”
Leonie’s arm comes around her shoulder for a moment and she feels her lips brush her hair. “I’ll run with you. I’ll run! W-We can figure something else out! We can go to the kingdom.”
“They know you’re with Edelgard.” Leonie warns. “The second someone sees you, or recognizes you, you’re done.”
“But I don’t… I can’t. I can’t be away from you, Leonie.” Bernadetta holds her gaze. The words jumble in her throat, thicken her tongue and take forever to come out but Leonie is patient. “You make me strong.”
Leonie just stares and holds her hand, her calloused thumb running over the back of Bernadetta’s palm. She’s quiet, gentle and attentive as Bernadetta attempts to regain herself and fails horribly. Bernadetta wants to collapse into Leonie’s arms and sob and yell that it’s not fair, it’s not fair, it’s not fucking fair.
“We’ll make it someday.” Leonie promises her. “We’ll just wait and see, okay?  I know this isn’t the end, I know it, Bern.”
Bernadetta feels her world come crashing down on her, but Leonie’s holding it up like she always does. She’s always so cool under pressure, nothing ever gets to her and it’s one of the reasons why Bernadetta is so intrigued by her.
“We’ll head back to the monastery tomorrow.” Leonie decides. “How’s your leg?”
“Fine. I’ll survive.”
It still hurts a lot, and Bernadetta’s moving slower than she should but the important thing is that she’s alive. She would’ve been dead without Leonie. Soon enough, Leonie won’t be there to make sure she doesn’t get hurt.
“They’ll take care of it better, I’m sure they have the supplies.”
Tears prick at Bernadetta’s eyes. Her arms slither around Leonie’s waist. She hugs Leonie tight, trying to remember how she’s all strength, all hard edges and sinewy muscle. Every since really taking archery seriously, Bernadetta’s slowly become like that, but village life and planting and sowing and hunting since she was a kid has sculpted Leonie into that mould.
Bernadetta focuses on the feeling of Leonie’s body against hers, her steady breathing, the rhythmic gentle thud of her heart. Bernadetta focuses on that for a long, long time until Leonie melts into sleep—she’s always been a better camper than Bernadetta—then slowly extracts herself from around Leonie.
She gets up, empties her pockets of her change, they were playing an anxious game of cribbage, trying to pass the time before the attack on the monastery, and leaves her entire coin purse of cribbage winnings by Leonie’s head, writing in the dirt, You win, Sunflower.
She says goodbye to Bennet, leaves all the rations they collected and her cloak because Leonie will surely need it and leaves the campground without looking back.
In five years, Bernadetta throws herself on Edelgard’s mercy; Leonie does the same with Claude. Naturally, as both are skilled fighters, they’re accepted back into the fold.
Edelgard keeps a close eye on Bernadetta to make sure she doesn’t run and hide. Claude makes sure that Lorenz, who has employed Leonie as a mercenary out of the knowledge of his father, keeps tabs on her.
Bernadetta doesn’t dare send a letter to Leonie, though she writes many and addresses them to the hearth in her room. Leonie doesn’t either, because she goes where the money goes.
But soon enough, five years lapse and the war goes full tilt.
Leonie is thrown from her horse. Bennet, the dumb bastard, rears up when Raphael lets out a roar to gas himself up. The battle’s barely started and she’s already half-concussed. The one fucking battle, that is the most important and she’s already messed up.
Leonie forces herself up into the saddle and follows Claude’s orders. She and Raphael are on the front line, their job is to cut a path through so that their reinforcements—mages—can sneak in and set fire to the field.
It all goes to plan, Leonie cuts down allies and enemies alike, their faces and bodies bleeding together like paint.
There, across the field she sees Bernadetta at the ballista. She looks different. Stronger, more mature, there’s a fire in her eyes that Leonie never saw before and she keeps murmuring, that can’t be Bernadetta, that can’t be her. It can’t be.
Then it occurs to Leonie that she’s on the bridge they’re going to set fire to.
Bernadetta, who left her in the ruins of a ravaged town. Bernadetta, who she thought would have died long ago. Bernadetta, who she would never have imagined in a thousand years to be here, on the front line at the Battle of Gronder Field.
Before she realizes it, Leonie is barrelling towards Bernadetta, screaming her name like it’s the only words she knows. She’s breathless, her lungs burning like hell as she pushes poor Bennet, faster, faster, faster.
She feels an arrow graze her shoulder. From the corner of her eye, Leonie sees crimson seep through her shirt sleeve and she cusses. Bernadetta nocks another one and screams at her to stop or she’ll shoot again. There’s a wild look in her eyes, a dangerous look, a look that says, “we have unfinished business”.
Leonie feels a lurch of anxiety and stops short of dismounting Bennet.
There’s a tense moment of eye contact as Leonie drinks in how Bernadetta has changed. Her hair is different, like she’s finally gotten used to using a hair brush, and she’s taller, much taller, almost as tall as Leonie herself. And she looks mature in a bad way, in a way that gives her dark circles beneath her eyes and quaking hands. She doesn’t look like the Bernadetta that she kissed, the Bernadetta that she shared secrets with, the Bernadetta that she loved and still loves.
She must have gone back to her father. Leonie shivers as she thinks it.
There’s the din of swords and shields. Leonie almost drops her lance. Bennet grows anxious with all the fighting.
“They’re gonna light this on fire.” Leonie tells her against the deafening sound. “If not them, us. You have to move.”
Bernadetta stares at her. “You said they’d protect me.”
“I was wrong!” Leonie cries out desparately. “I was so fucking wrong! I should have protected you. But you should have stayed! All you had to do was stay!”
Bernadetta’s eyes flicker behind her. She keeps the bowstring pulled tight as Leonie gets off Bennet and then lets it fly into Leonie’s shoulder. It lands hard and Bernadetta drops her bow, immediately realizing what she’s done.
She’s swearing, half screaming the words and then a cacophony of Oh goddess, oh Goddess, but all Leonie can think about is that she’s missed that anxious little voice and then realizes, “Oh fuck. You shot me.”
Bernadetta is stumbling over apologies before taking action. Like years before, but now in reverse, Bernadetta hauls Leonie on the back of Bennet and snaps the reins hard. She yells at Leonie to tell her about Sauin Village, about her home, about her travels, and Leonie, while feeling the blood ooze from her shoulder and the cloud of adrenaline fade from her mind, can talk only of the stars back in Sauin as they desert Gronder Field and their armies.
Bernadetta, Eternal Loner Leonie, Blade Breaker II
After fleeing Gronder, Bernadetta and Leonie were said to be spotted on the run for many, many years, though no official documents or records state this. Folk songs and rumours suggest that they became some sort of heroes to everyday folk, and The Ballad of the Bear and the Hornet, can be found in many children’s books.
Reports exist that an older woman with a fair amount of battle scars could be spotted inside taverns and pubs with many a great story to tell. These fun nights would follow promptly with a woman who only referred to herself as Bear, coming in to pay her wife’s tab and give her apologies.
Bonus CF Ending: Upon inheriting House Varley, Bernadetta completed her duties in solitude. When Leonie was called to dispatch some bandits, she and Bernadetta reunited and ended up staying together. Leonie became captain of her personal guard and Bernadetta ascended to become a wise, caring and authoritative leader with Leonie’s help. It was rumoured that in the early days of their relationship, Leonie would sit in and warn visiting dignitaries and politicians to mind their manners when Bernadetta was speaking with a weapon at hand; in respect to this, Bernadetta gave her a golden dagger, engraved with the name Sunflower.

Sea Fairy Cookie x Firey Headcanons
Fandoms: BFDI, Cookie Run Ship: Firey (BFDI)/Sea Fairy Cookie (Cookie Run) Characters: Firey (BFDI), Leafy (BFDI), Sea Fairy Cookie (Cookie Run) Tw: none Summery: General romance headcanons for Sea Fairy Cookie x MTF! Firey
They actually met exactly the way you'd think they would (/s). Thanks to another one of Blocky's pranks, Firey ended up on a piece of driftwood out in the middle of the ocean. Sea Fairy was the first to respond when she called for help, immediately realizing what the problem was. I mean, it wasn't hard to piece together that a living fire shouldn't be out in the ocean on a flammable object.
Sea Fairy helps drift Firey back to shore, making sure that Firey didn't fall in the water in the process. The entire time Firey was absolutely enamored by this beautiful and strange figure that had come to save her. Sea fairy Cookie was nothing Firey had ever seen before, and she couldn't but feel a magnetic pull towards her, despite them being polar opposites.
The moment they made it to shore, Firey asked Sea Fairy Cookie out on a date, knowing this might be her only chance to be with her. Sea Fairy Cookie was both stunned and concerned. She couldn't lie that Firey was cute, but she couldn't but feel as if she was too dangerous for Firey.
"Firey, My deepest apologies, but, I'm afraid we could never be, as the goddess of water, I feel as if-" "I-I promise I can make it work! Besides, I've been put out before, we could probably just bring me back!"
Sea Fairy was a bit relieved, but still reluctant about this, cause even if Firey could come back, Sea Fairy would never be able to live with herself if she did something. It was only a few moments of back and forth before Sea Fairy finally agreed to go on a date. It wasn't anywhere fancy, which Firey was most embarrassed about, but Sea Fairy found it cute. She really did enjoy spending time with Firey. Perhaps... she should give her a chance.
They both knew they could potentially hurt each other due to their nature, so they made workarounds, and started out small. They'd mainly just hold hands, and eventually found out the quick kisses didn't cause either of them too much damage.
Sea Fairy didn't even realize Firey had an ex-girlfriend until Leafy specifically mentioned it to Sea Fairy. It wasn't in a 'jealous ex' way though, but more in a 'hey I know you're now dating my ex and there are some things you might wanna know to keep them happy. Sea Fairy was a bit surprised, she wasn't unfamiliar with the concept of staying friends after a break-up, up she wasn't sure how it was so easy for Leafy to accept that Firey was dating someone else now, let alone talk to her new girlfriend.
"So I'm sure you're still working on physical affection right? Yeah, it took a while for me and Firey to figure kissing out, I think what we did is-" "Wait what?" "Oh, did Firey never tell you? I'm her ex-girlfriend! I thought you'd appreciate it if I told you a few things about Firey you might need to know." "And you aren't bothered by the fact that I'm dating your ex?" "No, why would I be?" "..."
That's not to say she didn't accept the help, she was just a bit cautious at first. All the advice did help a lot though, so she was very thankful for that.

Every Friday night, without fail, you saw the light filter into your apartment.
Notice how you said night?
Yeah, it was almost two in the morning, by the way.
And why was there light coming through the chiffon curtains you had hanging on the rod above your window?
(Great choice on your part, by the way.)
Well, because of your neighbor.
You've seen him a few times, actually. Usually on the street outside your buildings, or just out and about. Never spoke to him, though. He was quiet, kept to himself. Didn't seem very friendly or willing to exchange a greeting if he ever saw you.
But you never took it personally. Maybe he was having a bad day. Every time you saw him.
But that's besides the point. The point right now is that you can see the lights blaring in your room. From the apartment across from yours.
Should it even be possible for light to travel that far? I mean, we don't even live in the same building. You think to yourself as you watch the colors dance in the dark.
You debate getting up and yelling out your window to tell him to shut that shit off or to invest in some blackout curtains. You were tired of sacrificing your sleep every week.
But then you decided against it, because you quite frankly could not be bothered to get up from the warmth of your bed. You'd tough it out for the night, but the next time you saw him, you'd have a few words for him.
-
The next morning, it was almost ten when you woke up. You didn't have your shift at the coffee shop you worked at until three, so you took your time in making your way out of bed.
You noticed the curtains of your neighbor's apartment were still open, but you could see his figure moving across the room. He was clearly on the phone with someone, and he didn't look too happy. You wondered what could have him so angry at such an early time of the morning. He seemed like a person who could use someone to talk to, someone who he could vent to.
But before you let your thoughts get ahead of you, you turn away from the window, heading back into your kitchen to eat breakfast and get ready for the long day ahead of you.
-
"Hi, what can I get started for you today?" You ask as brightly as you can muster at the moment. You were halfway through your shift, another three hours until close.
"Uh, just a large black coffee." The gruff voice says, and it takes you a second until you look up and look closely.
It was him.
"O-okay, that'll be $3.27." You say, and he hands you a five dollar note before grumbling,
"Keep the change."
"Thanks, and your name?"
He gives you a look that's asking, 'what the fuck do you need my name for?'
"For the order." You try and salvage your dignity, because it feels like the stare shrunk you to a speck of dust.
"James."
That's all he all but growls before turning back to find a seat.
As your coworker takes over the cash register, you grab the biggest cup and fill it with his desired coffee.
You try to not think about it too much, but the anxiety you feel rising up inside you and just calling his name to give him his coffee feels absolutely ridiculous.
"Are you just gonna stare at the cup or give it to the customer?" The voice of your coworker, Jenna, rings in your ears and you look up at her, snapping out of the trance you were in.
"Sorry, I'm just a little out of it today, I guess."
"Everything alright?" She asks, and you nod.
"I'm fine, it's just... that's my neighbor." You nod your head towards where James is sat, in the corner by the window as he watches the raindrops run down the expanse of the glass.
"The one who doesn't let you sleep?"
"Yeah, but I don't think he'd take it too kindly if I tell him about that. He seems to have a lot on his own plate anyways," You explain, and she just nods.
"Well, that sucks, but you still need ta' give the guy his coffee." Jenna smiles and walks back to what she was doing before.
You gently slide out from your spot behind the counter and walk to his table.
"Here's your coffee, James. Enjoy, and- uh, let me know if you'd like anything else." You tell him while placing the steaming cup in front of him.
He murmurs a thank you that you barely catch, but you don't quite have the time to sit and wait for more of a reaction.
For the next several hours, James sits right where he was. He doesn't do anything in particular, either. He just watches outside, as the rain continues to pelt down on New York City, and as people come and go from where they were.
Eventually, about an hour left until close, you offer another cup of coffee.
"Do you want a refill? On the house." You ask gently, waiting to see if you'll get brushed off again.
"Uh... are you allowed to do stuff like that?" He asks, and you're a bit taken aback at the sudden concern.
"I don't think you should worry yourself too much, James. Free coffee's free coffee." You smile lightly, and grab the cup before filling it up without his confirmation. You could tell he wanted to say yes but didn't want to seem rude.
"You didn't have to..." He grumbles, and you simply shake your head.
"I know, but you've been here a while, and what kind of employee would I be if I let a customer sit here without any sustenance?" Your lips ply into a tiny smirk, trying to get him to loosen up a bit.
He seems so guarded, defensive. Like any moment, he's ready to run if need be, you inspect to yourself.
"You'd just be a regular employee, Y/N." He says, but the way he says your name makes a shiver run down your spine; and you can't tell if it's a good or bad one.
You unconsciously look down at your name tag, pinned to your black apron that's branded with the café's logo.
"Well, I felt like being nice. I hope you can deal." Your voice comes out short, but he knows you mean no harm.
As you walk back to the counter, you see a small smile playing on his lips, but he doesn't allow it to manifest on his face. You take that as a small victory for your last hour of work.
(bucky's pov).・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.
The girl who works at this café is annoying.
But she's got a nice smile. And she's nice to me, Bucky thinks to himself.
He sips on the new coffee you'd just poured for him, without his consent, he thinks bitterly.
But it was a nice gesture.
Why can't you just take a nice gesture?
Because your brain's been scrambled eggs for 70 years. You don't know what to think about anything these days.
He watches you fiddle with the espresso maker, cleaning it with a rag, which you then dip into a bucket.
You look extremely familiar to him, but he can't exactly pin where he's seen you before.
Bucky closes his eyes for a moment, trying to recall where he'd seen you, but for a moment, he comes up with nothing.
Ever since he's been living back in the real world, he hasn't been outside too much.
He goes on the occasional walk, or goes to the tower to see Steve and Sam.
But other than that, he spends a lot of time in his Brooklyn apartment. He watches movies that Steve suggests, or he invites Steve and Sam over to have beer and watch TV with him.
He hates how lonely it gets, though.
Bucky wishes that he had someone.
Someone who could understand.
And don't get him wrong, he loves Sam and Steve. They fill in the gaps in his days, and they make them better.
Sometimes, thinking about having something to do that day is what makes it. He likes having something to do, something to plan for for when his friends come over.
But it feels like a teeny, tiny part of his life is missing. A person shaped-hole in his heart.
But Bucky doesn't spend too long thinking about it, or it'll send him into a spiral about failure and how he needs to 'push himself to get out there more.'
Or that's what his therapist says.
"Hey, we're about to close, and we usually throw the pastries out at the end of the day. Do you wanna take these home, by any chance?" Your voice rings in his ears, snapping him out of the impending slippery slope of his lack of love life.
He hesitates to answer for a second, looking at the brown paper bag pinched between your fingers.
Bucky can tell you were nervous when you spoke to him. He knew he made you uneasy, and it killed him inside.
He hated that. He just wanted to have a normal conversation with someone. But everyone seems to know who he is.
Who he was.
"Uh, what is it?" He croaks, unsure of what to say at your gesture.
"It's a few cookies and a chocolate croissant."
"Sure, I'll take 'em." Bucky simply answers, watching as you hand the bag over with a soft smile and watches you walk back.
You sweep up the floor and put up all the chairs, except for the one Bucky's sitting on. You leave his table alone, and bid farewell to your coworker who was scheduled to close with you.
Bucky doesn't know what drives him to do it, but he gets up after he sees you walk out the door, and follows you home.
Damn, if you like a girl, you usually ask for her number or somethin'. Not follow her home to make sure she's safe, you idiot. Bucky's inner voice speaks and sometimes, he wishes it would just shut up because he knows he has no game nowadays, but this is all he knows to do.
He realizes the way you're walking is familiar, and not at all of the way he was supposed to be going. That made him feel a little better, less like a creep. He's about half a block behind you, and when you turn onto the same street he lives on, he's really confused.
Did you know he was behind you? Are you trying to play a trick on him?
But before Bucky can speak up or say something, you walk right past his building, and into the one right next to it.
All of a sudden, images of you right on the street in front of your buildings flash through his head. He's seen you because you're his neighbor. Bucky's seen you right there, getting ready to start your run through the neighborhood, or probably on your way to work, now that he's seen where you work.
But he feels like there's somewhere else he's seen you; somewhere familiar.
He shakes his head, wondering why he's so caught up in you. He thought you were beautiful, but he feels a pull to you that he's never felt with anyone else before.
Bucky's hands move to unlock his door, sliding the key in and twisting the lock open.
He enters, staring at his dark apartment. It's moments like this, when he spends a long day alone, that he wishes there was someone.
Someone to come home to, to hug, to kiss, to share dinner with.
Some to fall asleep with at night. Someone to keep the terrors of the dark away.
But there was no one.
And then his mind thought back to you. Your hair, your face, your warm hands that touched his while you passed him the brown paper bag of treats.
Bucky wishes he was man enough to ask you out. Not even that, just to talk to you. Have a normal conversation, to get to know you.
But that wasn't in the cards for him anytime soon, he thinks.
For now, he focuses on taking things one at a time. And right now, all he wanted was a nice, warm shower and to get at least three hours of sleep tonight.
He's in his room, forgoing the lights for now, before he looks out his window.
For a moment, he believes his eyes are playing tricks on him.
There's absolutely no way that you are standing right there, right outside his window.
Well, in your own apartment, of course.
And there's absolutely no way in hell that Bucky is watching you undress right now.
As soon as you pull off your top, Bucky turns around before he could get more than a peek of your black lace bra, and he feels a burn in the pit of his stomach.
He can't tell if it's shame, guilt, or arousal.
(y/n's pov).・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.
You couldn't stop thinking about James all day.
After yesterday, you wondered why you couldn't shake this feeling about him.
He'd made it quite clear that he's not a people person. Or maybe he just wasn't a you person.
But again, you tried to not take things too personally these days.
Sometimes, you wondered, though, as you looked through your bedroom window to his some nights.
You imagined what it would be like, watching one of those movies with him at night. Making dinner with him. Having coffee in the mornings before work, wondering what he did for a living.
You chastise yourself for your thoughts, thinking that you were crazy for these ideas you were coming up with out of nowhere.
As you pull off your clothes to get ready for bed, you feel the same emptiness fill your heart when your head hits the pillow, and another day has gone by where you're all alone.
-
The next day, your shift was at ten in the morning so you were up early.
You took your time in rolling out of bed. The warmth of your duvet was holding you down, and you couldn't help take a peek out your window.
You see that the room facing yours is finally housing a body in the bed. In all the time you'd been living across him, you've only seen him on the floor.
You feel a warm flutter at that. Whatever reason led him to actually sleep in the bed last night was, you hope you played a role in it.
-
You make your way to the café, and although walking in the rain wasn't ideal, you made it, somehow.
You clock in and head to the register, ready to take the millions of orders that come in through the day.
"Hi- oh! Welcome back. What can I get you?" Your tone of voice made it clear you were surprised, but was trying to not let it show.
"Uhm, just the same as yesterday, and... Can I get a chocolate croissant?" Bucky's gruff voice tells you.
You ring him up, wondering if you should say something about him being your neighbor. Although, he didn't seem too keen on looking you in the eye right now, and you wonder if you did something to make him uncomfortable yet again.
He seems to have this issue quite often.
Little do you know, this time, it isn't because of you or anything you did.
Well, nothing you did on purpose.
Nothing you were aware of at the time.
Anyways, you tell James to go take a seat and that you'd be right out with his order.
"Here you go, James," you place the plate and mug on the table, and this time, when you hear him say something, you turn around with furrowed brows.
"Sorry, I didn't catch what you said." You apologize, waiting for him to repeat himself.
"I- nevermind, it was stupid anyways. You probably have to get back to work." He mumbles while looking back down at his pastry.
"James, whatever it is, you can tell me." You offer with a kind smile. "I can come sit with you during my break, if you don't mind?" A hopeful smile crosses your face.
"Uh, I- yes, yeah, that would be nice." He struggles for a moment, but finally nods his head in confirmation along with his words.
"Alright, James. I get off in an hour for my break." You simply tell him with a soft grin, and you can practically feel his eyes burning into you as you walk away.
The blush creeping up your cheeks also stays there until the remainder of your shift.
-
As you plop in the chair across from James, you inspect him for a moment.
He was attractive, you'll admit.
Okay, he was more than attractive.
"So, James, where are you from?" You ask, your own cup of coffee in front of you on the table.
"Well, I'm Brooklyn born 'nd raised. Never was a time I didn't live here. You?" His lip twitches, looking out the window fondly.
"That's nice. I moved here when I was nine, so I guess I've been here a while. But no matter where I go, there's nowhere like home." You smile.
"There really isn't, huh? This place is irreplaceable." He gives you a crack of another smile, and you find yourself yearning for more from him. Just a tooth, something.
"Well, do you live around here?" You ask, deciding to play coy. You wanted to see what he'd say.
"Uh, yeah, actually. Over on DeKalb and Clinton." He clears his throat, the hint of a smile on his face melting right off.
"Huh, that's so funny. I live on those streets too." You grin, waiting to see his reaction.
"O-Oh really?" James doesn't really know what to say without giving away that he knows where you fucking live.
"Yeah, isn't that funny? Which building?" You're pressing, and you know he knows, but you're having your fun right now.
"T-the uhm... I live in the Washington." He's now making zero eye contact with you, and you're close to breaking.
"What a coincidence! I live in the Oakley!" You're in a fit of giggles when his face drops, you just can't help it anymore.
"James, can I tell you something?" You ask in a coquettish manner.
"Yeah, I suppose you'll tell me even if I say no." He gives a tight smile as a joke.
"I don't wanna sound like a creep, but I knew you lived in the Washington."
"Oh," James releases a breath of relief, "thank God. I knew you lived in the Oakley, but I didn't wanna sound like a stalker either." He says.
You laugh, sliding a hand on top of his resting on the table.
"Y'know, you do this really annoying thing where you leave your movies running on full brightness on your TV, and I can see it through my windows at night." You laugh at the incredulity of the situation.
"Oh... I never even thought of that. I'm sorry, Y/N." He looks genuinely remorseful, and now you feel bad for any bad thought you've had about the man that lives across from you.
"It's alright. No big deal." Your smile does a good job of convincing Bucky that you truly weren't bothered by his actions, but he still felt bad.
"Y'know, maybe I could make it up to you?" He asks, and you feel a blush moving up your chest. "Like, maybe over dinner?" His voice is timid, you can tell by the way he tilts his head down while speaking.
"James," you slide your hand into his this time, your smaller one resting in his large metal one. "I'd love to go out with you sometime."
Before he could react, you stood up from the chair.
"My break's over, but I get off at 3." You lean down and pull a pen from your apron, scribbling your number onto a napkin. "Here."
You walk away before he could say anything, but there's something about him this time that you notice.
He's blushing, too. And he's smiling. A bright, white, blinding smile.
You think of that smile throughout your whole shift, until you see he's still waiting for you when it's time to go.
"So, do you like Chinese or Italian better?" He asks with a crooked smile.
-
bonus scene:
six months later
You and Bucky are laid across your bed, the TV blaring a movie that neither of you are paying attention to. Your head is resting on his shoulder, leg thrown over both of his, and his hand running through your hair.
"You wanna know somethin' doll?" Bucky asks, and you feel his chest rumble under your head.
"Yeah, everything okay?" You ask while leaning up on your elbow to get a good look at him, trying to gauge his mood.
"Everything's okay, just remembered something." He laughs, his hand moving to hold your jaw in it. You shivered at the touch, but smiled fondly at the action.
"When I first saw you at the coffee shop, that first day when you gave the free coffee and pastries... I followed you home."
Your brows furrow and it's clear that you were confused as to why.
"I wanted to make sure you got home safe, and then it turned out that you lived right next to me. So I went up to my apartment and wondered what I'd done right in a past life to have you live right next to me, and then I saw you lived right across from me." His face was tipped upwards, like he was replaying that night in his head.
"You followed me home just to make sure I was safe?" You asked in disbelief that he did something so nice for you, when at the time you thought he hated you.
"Of course, sweetheart. It was dark out and there 're some real jerks out there, y'know." One corner of his mouth lifts up in a soft smirk. "Didn't want anything to happen to ya."
You lean down and press a kiss to the corner of his mouth, appreciating his gesture.
"I really thought you didn't like me back then, so this is a nice little secret you've been hiding from me." You giggle when he pulls you back in for a real kiss.
"Yeah, well, I don't think I could'a hated you if I tried, baby. You're too sweet. And at the time, I was still getting used to being out in the open without being a national security threat." You both laugh lightly, dropping your head down.
A moment passes where you bask in his words, letting them soak in. And then a thought hits you, and you can't help but become more curious. Now you need to know the answer.
"Hey, can I ask you something?"
"Sure, hon." Now Bucky's brows are pulled together, and you reach up and smooth out the wrinkle with your thumb.
"Did you ever... see me doing anything in here? Like, I usually keep the curtains open, and even if they're closed, they're pretty see-through..." You trail off, giving him time to craft his response.
You have a feeling you know the answer, considering how he turns red like a tomato in an instant as words leave your lips.
"I... there was this one time, but I swear, I wasn't trying to peep on you or anything, it was the same day I followed you and I just so happened to look into your window, and you were getting undressed, but I swear, I turned away as soon as I saw what you were doing, baby-" He was rambling, trying to save himself from sounding like a complete creep after all he's just told you.
"Did you like it?" You ask, innocently, but he knew what you were trying to do.
"I-I- You were getting undressed, sweetheart, of course I liked it... are you kidding me?" Bucky's grasping for the words, trying to make you understand.
"Well... we could always recreate it, but maybe in the same apartment this time?" You cock your head to the side, your doe eyes stirring a feeling in his abdomen.
"I think that's an excellent idea, honey." Bucky's hands grasp your waist as you slide on top of his lap. "After all, I am a hands on learner."

Bucky awoke to the sound of the guards unlocking the door, the metal creaking as Alexander Pierce walked in, waving the guards off to leave the two alone.
“you have another mission today” the man spoke smoothly, bucky getting up from his small bed and staring at the man infront of him, “you need to finish this before it gets out of hand” pierce spoke, eyeing the soldier as he stared blankly ahead.
“Do you understand?” He questioned, bucky looked at him, nodding his head silently as the guards took him out, taking him to get ready for his mission.
He had stopped resisting, he had nothing left, he couldn’t remember much and he had no idea who he even was. Bucky followed the motions, suiting up and grabbing his weapons alongside the other HYDRA agents.
You frowned at steve and natasha, grumbling to yourself as Sam let you into the house.
“im y/n, sorry about these two” you smiled at the man, extending your hand out and turning to your two friends.
“thank you for coming y/n, we really need you” Steve spoke, natasha nodding in agreement as she dried her hair slowly.
“yeah, yeah everyone always needs me” you joked, sitting next to them and rubbing your eyes, “woke me up from my nap so this better be good” you spoke, crossing your arms over your chest and leaning back.
Steve and natasha explained the situation, telling you what they knew about the winter soldier, you soaked in the information, attempting to google him but coming up with almost nothing.
“hm, so you want me to do what, exactly” you questioned, looking at the trio staring back at you.
“fight with us, help us, we have to stop HYDRA” Steve spoke, looking at natasha before continuing, “i don’t know who to trust and” he sighed, “we know we can trust you, are you in?”
You smiled, getting up and pulling the three in for a hug, sams eyes going wide.
“of course I’m in, i care about you guys too much to let you die alone” you chuckled, pulling away, looking at Sam before speaking up, “no ones dying by the way, right?”
The four of you were on the rooftop, getting information out of Sitwell, laughing when natasha kicked him off.
“What about that girl from accounting, Laura?” Natasha spoke, looking at Steve as he thought about the woman’s name.
“Lillian! Lip piercing right?” Natasha nodded and Steve shook his head.
“yeah I’m not ready for that” you laughed at the two lightly.
“you should get with the time have a little fun!” You teased, Natasha smiling as you sided with her, nodding her head excitedly.
As Sam brought Sitwell back you began the interrogation, threatening to throw the man off for good is he didn’t start talking. Your eyes were steely and they let you handle him, getting all the information you needed.
“i didn’t know you could be so-” sam stopped, trying to find the right words.
“evil?” Natasha offered.
“terrifying?” Steve chuckled and Sam nodded.
“Insight launched in 16 hours” you spoke up, checking your phone, Natasha nodded speaking up after you, “we’re cutting it kinda close here.”
Steve looked ahead with furrowed brows nodding his head, “well use him to bypass the DNA scans and bypass the helicarriers directly.”
Sitwell scoffed next to you, blabbering on about you something, you rolled your eyes, going to say something when someone reached through the window and threw him out, your eyes going wide.
“what the fuck!” You screeched, looking up and seeing who you assumed was the winter soldier.
Your eyes were wide as you stared out the windshield, a tug in your chest as you saw him sliding across the concrete, steadying himself with his metal arm.
Natasha pulled her gun out, aiming at the man. A car rear ended you, pushing you forward and knocking your wind out. The soldier jumped atop the car, holding on tight as the truck behind you pushed you all foward.
Sam pressed on the breaks, trying to steer away from the other cars. A metal hand reached through the windshield and tore the steering wheel out from his grasp.
“shit!” Sam yelled, eyes wide as the car drove into another, Natasha reaching her gun and shooting in hopes of hitting the masked man.
Steve grabbed onto the three in the front, looking back at you with wide eyes.
“go!” You yelled, scrambling to open the door before the car crashed into the wall.
“hang on!” Steve called, jumping out, with you bracing yourself for the impact seconds after, you flew out the door, hitting the ground with a thud.
You ran to join natasha and Sam, ducking behind cars to avoid the bullets, finally pulling out your pocket knife and hitting one of the men in the chest, running again as they shot at you three even more.
You and natasha jumped down, holding onto her as she shot something under the bridge to swing from.
The two of you landed safely, you pointed to the shadow of the solider, running alongside her to shoot at the man.
You both aimed and fired, hitting his giggled and causing him to turn back. You let out a sigh, hoping they would give you a minute to recover. You both ran for cover as he leaned back over, machine gun in hand and shooting wildly.
“fucks sake” you let out, breathless as you aimed to shoot back at him, running for cover once again, hiding behind the parked cars. Your eyes focusing on the bus steve had fallen into, relief flooding your body when you saw him jumping out and hiding behind the shield safely, eyes moving to the highway and seeing Sam shooting from above.
“I’m gonna leave this recording here, ill sneak up behind him and then you try and get him, we can double team him” Natasha spoke, you nodded, letting her record the memo before setting it down and running.
Your heart raced as you saw the soldier approach the vehicle, waiting for the right moment to strike. As Natasha ran to tackle him from behind you noticed the amount of people still around you, the explosion next to you sending people flying.
“shit” you mumbled, running to help them as Natasha held her own.
“get out of the way! Run! Get out of here” you yelled, pointing at those in frenzy to run in the opposite direction, you glanced over your shoulder, Natasha being thrown into a car.
As you turned to help her you noticed a little girl crying, alone. You debated for a second before running up to her, taking her in your arms and handing her off to some random adult who was fleeing.
Natasha had messed the man arm up, joining her in her sprint as you all yelled for people to move and to take cover. You heard the whirl of a bullet and natasha groan, doubling over next to a car.
“take of her!” Steve yelled, holding off the soldier. You let eyes were wide, putting pressure on Natasha wound and looking around.
“you’re gonna be fine” you told her, looking into the car and breaking the window with your elbow, opening the compartment in the passengers seat and smiling when you found a first aid kit.
“come on” you mumbled, moving her gently and cleaning the wound, doing your best with what little you had. You tried to bandage her, the sound of the bullets hitting Steve’s shield making your hands shake.
“go help them, I’ll be fine” Natasha groaned out, you hesitated before nodding, running to where Steve was.
You hid behind a car, watching as he shoved a knife into a van, barely missing Steve’s head.
You jumped from behind the car as Steve reached to grab his shield, hitting the metal armed man, you used your body weight to twist him back.
Visions flashed in your eyes, quick flashes of a man with a charming smile and beautiful blue eyes. The sound of laughter echoing in your ears as the mask fell besides you. You saw the two of you cuddled up on a couch, you saw two two of you watching a sunset while on a picnic, giggles falling from your mouth.
Bucky saw it too, his mind flashing with pictures of a life he didn’t recognize, seeing you, his mission in them. He saw you cuddled at his side, he saw you on a stage together singing with lyrics on a screen, he saw the two of you rescuing a white cat from the rain. Bucky saw you holding out a present for him, a bright smile on you face, he saw you throwing flour at him in a kitchen, cookies baking in an over.
He stayed on the ground, memories who he used to be flooding his mind, hope of who he could become clouding his judgement.
Tears brimmed in his eyes as he looked up at you, standing in front of Steve with an equally shocked look on your face.
“it’s you” you breathed out, your heart tugging in your chest as your eyes met his blue ones, they were cloudy and they were broken but god, you already loved them.
“it’s you” he whispered. A year rolling down his face before HYDRA agents surrounded you all.
“Bucky?” Steve spoke, finally getting a good look at the man.
The super soldier stayed quiet, panic in his eyes and he looked at you, setting his weapon down. You made a move to run to him, but Sam flew in, knocking him feet away from you, Natasha soon launching a grenade.
“no!” You screamed, running to where he was. He was gone.
“No! Please i just found him no!” You cried, sinking to you knees, Sam ran over to you, holding you tightly as you sobbed, agents surrounding the four of you and telling you all to get down on your knees.
You sobbed into sams chest, only leaving his embrace when the agents ripped you from him.
Buckys eyes were wide as he sat in the chair, his heart racing as he recalled your face, your hair. He recalled the flashes he saw, his future with you.
He had something to hold onto, he had something to fight for, someone to survive for. He thought about the man who was next to you, he was familiar, he was in his old memories.
Buckys mind raced, knowing they would wipe his memories, he soaked in every last detail, praying he could hold onto to what he had after they wiped him.
He could hold onto you, his hope.

Late Night Encounters Part 3
Pairing: Fred Weasley x Fem!Reader
Warnings: SMUT!! Female receiving oral, unprotected vaginal penetration
Word Count: 3.5K
A/N: It’s my birthday so I didn’t proofread this!! I’m sorry!!
Once again, Fred had a date. He woke up that morning and remembered every bit of what he had said, and stood by his words. He told Y/N he still wanted to see the ring on the table when he got home. He wanted her to think about it for at least 24 full hours before she made a decision.
Y/N and Fred had narrowly missed each other that morning. He was off running errands for the day and she had only just woken up. He was home for lunch and she was out with Hermione. Y/N felt her heart sink, feeling guilty for wanting to see him. Why guilt, though? She didn’t feel like she had a valid reason to feel guilty. After she got home from lunch Fred had already left for his date, so she fell asleep on the couch in the living room, figuring it was a good way to pass the time until she saw her new best friend again.
“Why was this on the kitchen table?” George asked, waking Y/N up out of her sweet, dreamless sleep on the couch. He was holding the ring.
“I can’t sleep with jewelry on.” She shrugged, getting up and going to grab the ring. He held it up higher. She almost laughed until she saw the look on his face.
“I’m serious.” She sighed heavily at this.
“I know, George.”
“You know what?” The audacity that men have.
“I know you’re sleeping with her again.”
“W-what?” He almost dropped the ring.
“I just don’t get it, George.”
“I w-wouldn’t do that again.”
“Except you are.”
“Why are you accusing me right now?”
“Because I’m not dumb! Just because I trust you doesn’t mean I’m dumb! I’m not naive. The first time, sure. This time, no! It’s the same as last time, but you thought I’d stay with you just because you proposed this time! Maybe I won’t, did you think about that? What if you get her pregnant? Did you just expect me to stay around and raise the kid? Or what if we both get pregnant, who are you leaving alone with their child?”
“I cannot believe this right now--”
“Stop that! Stop it! You’re gaslighting me! You know I’m right! Stop lying!”
“Fine!”
“How long?”
“A year.”
“So immediately after we got back to where we were.”
“Yes.”
“Why? What did I do? Why am I not enough for you?”
“Maybe if you--”
“Actually, no, fuck you. I’m enough for me. I’m enough for so many people. I gave you a second chance and you fucking blew it! I’ve done so much for you, for Fred, too!”
“I--” He sighed. He was speechless. It was the first time you’d really fully stood up for yourself. It was on him, he knew that. “I think...I’m going to spend the night at the Burrow, and we’ll talk about it tomorrow.”
“No.”
“What?”
“Go, spend the night with her, but don’t lie to me and say you’re staying with your mom.” She spoke bluntly, tears streaming out of her eyes quietly. It was a silent cry, the only way Y/N ever allowed herself to cry in front of people. He hesitated, but he turned around and left the living room. Y/N entered the kitchen, starting to grease pans for baking.
-
Fred came home that night, mostly confused. Y/N wasn’t in the living room tonight, which didn’t make him feel great. That wasn’t the worst of it though. The date was great. She was perfect, but...he hated it. Something was missing. As she listed off interests, favorite movies, her favorite quidditch team...all he could think was that something was missing. When he got home, and Y/N was missing, it dawned on him. It was her. She was missing. The girl had listed off all of Y/N’s favorite movies, her favorite songs. She liked to bake. Her favorite quidditch team was the Holyhead Harpies, the team his little sister played on. Suddenly, Fred felt rather sick. He can’t have feelings for his brother's girlfriend--no, fiance!
With a pit in his stomach, he walked into the kitchen, where he opened his eyes wide. The entire kitchen table and window sill were covered in baked goods. There was one clean counter, where Y/N sat staring off into space, waiting for her next round of cookies to finish.
“Oh! I forgot! I’m sorry, how was the date?”
“What’s wrong?”
“Oh nothing--”
“Don’t, please don’t close yourself off. We’re close now, just let me in. What happened, what’s with the baked goods?” He asked, leaning with his arms crossed and his back against the island counter across from where she sat. He noticed the ring was missing, it wasn’t on Y/N’s finger, it wasn’t on the counter or the table where he’d seen it last.
“He admitted it. He’s cheating on me with her again.” She sighed, looking to the ceiling and holding back tears. “And it sucks so hard to know he wasted all this time of mine again. He proposed to me. I know he’s your brother, but that’s just so...crazy. Who does that?” She paused, and just as Fred was about to talk she kept going. “And the worst part is that I don’t...I don’t feel anything. The first time he cheated with Angelina it was like my whole world came crashing down. He was my best friend, my boyfriend, and my roommate. Now, it barely even feels like we’re roommates. I thought I could love him the same way after it all, and maybe he cheated because I couldn’t.”
“Don’t blame yourself. Cheating is always a decision. If he realized you didn’t love him the same way he should have communicated with you. Broken up. Not proposed and delayed this.” Fred sighed. Y/N wouldn’t make eye contact with Fred, assumingly because she was upset.
“I--” She paused, chest tight. She looked up at Fred, making blatant eye contact. “What if I’ve been emotionally cheating?” Fred’s eyes widened and his heart sank. He felt awful, like his feelings for her would just have to go away again. Right as they were getting close.
“W-what? With who?”
“You fucking idiot.” She sighed, pushing herself off the counter. She went to walk away, but Fred put his arms on either side of her on the counter, pinning her where she was.
“Don’t walk away.” He whispered, so close to her face. Her heart pounded.
“I--” She sighed. “Fred, I’ve felt more for you in the past five days than I’ve felt for George in the past year and a half. I waited all day for you to be here, and I kept feeling guilty for it. I’ve felt so guilty, and then I find out he’s cheating and I’m so numb to it because you’re all I can think about.” She paused to breathe before she continued her quick ramblings. “Also, the idea of having feelings for you is so weird, because we only just started to like each other, but you’re standing so close to me and all I can hear is my heart pounding in my ears. I can’t stop thinking about all the girls you used to bring home and how I don’t want to be just one of those girls you sleep with. But obviously I can’t just be with you because I think I just broke off my engagement with your brother and also because you haven’t said anything--” So Fred, in his overwhelmed state, pushed forward and pressed his lips against hers. She grabbed both sides of his face as he grabbed her hips. After a few moments, he quickly pulled apart, moving one of his hands to keep her hand on his face in place
“I couldn’t tell you the other night, but I had feelings for you that summer before the war, but you were with George. I couldn’t...I couldn’t just confess then, and besides you were so happy with him. Then we didn’t like each other, and the night before you got engaged I couldn’t stop thinking about you all over again. And...George made us spend all that time together and you’re the only thing I think about. The girl I went on the date with was so perfect, but I couldn’t get you off my mind and I realized she was just like you. But she wasn’t. She wasn’t you, no one will ever be you.” Fred spoke in a hushed tone with his eyes closed, as if speaking any louder or seeing her would make Y/N evaporate into thin air. Slowly, he opened his eyes to see her with tear tracks down her face.
“I don’t think anyone’s ever said anything that nice to me before.” She whispered, taking the hand that wasn’t trapped by his and wiping her face. He giggled, letting go of her hand and using both of his hands to hold the sides of her face. He leaned forward and kissed the tear stains on Y/N’s face. “You’re like this perfect man, it’s so wildly different from George.” She mumbled.
“I can’t account for where he went wrong, and I haven’t always been great. But if you give me the chance, I will love you better than anyone else could dream of.” With tears streaming down her eyes she pulled him in to kiss her again, he smiled against her lips. He held the small of her waist as she rested one of her hands on his chest, the other sat at the back of his neck playing with his hair. He moaned when she pulled it gently, causing her to smile into their kiss. She almost missed being able to see him rolling his eyes at her smirk.
“Love me, please. Tonight, tomorrow, every day. Just--love me tonight.” She whispered against his lips as they panted for air.
He leaned down, kissing her again as he grabbed the back of her thighs and lifted her back to a sitting position on the counter. Y/N threaded her fingers through Fred’s hair, one of Fred’s hands was on her thigh, the other rested on her waist. Finally, she bit his bottom lip in an attempt to get him to do anything. In response, he gave a noise that sounded between a groan and a growl, moving to her neck to leave bite marks. He licked the shell of her ear and bit the lobe as he moved down to the length of her neck, sucking hard. She moaned softly, whimpering when he used he grazed his teeth over her neck.
She started grinding her hips against his in an attempt to get some friction. He grabbed her hips, pulling her closer to him to aid in her plight for friction. After he felt satisfied with the bruises he’d left on her neck he went back to her lips, sucking on her bottom lip briefly before licking it in a silent asking of permission to use it. She gracefully licked his tongue, granting his own tongue admission to her mouth. Their tongues wrestled messily, Y/N playing with Fred’s hair and occasionally pulling softly to hear him moan. She was starting to feel frustrated with just grinding, so she moved the hand that was on the side of Fred’s face to gracefully feel all the way down his body before she started palming him through his slacks. He gave a harsh groan this time, pulling apart from her mouth briefly.
“You’re so beautiful, so sexy.” His voice was deep with pleasure and she moaned at the sound alone. Her heart swelled, she hadn’t been praised like that sexually...ever. Fred took one of his hands off of her hips to thread into her hair, pulling gently to hear her moan. He swore to himself that he could hear that every minute of every day and never get tired of it. While Fred knew he was going to fuck her, his intentions were pure-- he wanted to make love to her. Y/N, however, was getting frustrated with his politeness. She started to unbutton his slacks and he broke off their kiss again. “Hold on, I want to take care of you.” He whispered, flush against her lips.
“I appreciate that, but I want you inside of me.” She whispered, her hand that had been unbuttoning his pants was now tangled in his shirt. Fred felt his heart drop to his cock when she said this, groaning at her lack of restraint. Y/N started unbuttoning his shirt as he separated her thighs and pulled her completely to the edge of the counter.
“You’ll just have to be patient, princess.” He grinned as he went to crouch, kissing her knee on the way down. He left kisses all over the inside of her thighs, leaving her soaked to the core before he had even really touched her. Both Fred and Y/N were thankful she was wearing a dress that day, making his access considerably easier as he rubbed her through only her thin panties. Kissing the inside of her thigh as he looked up into her eyes, he felt like the luckiest man alive. He almost grinned when he saw she was adorning another pair of fruit covered panties.
“You know, I wasn’t kidding when I said the cherry panties were sexy,” He smirked up at her, rubbing circles into her clit through peach covered cotton. “These are sexy too, but I think they’d look a lot better on the floor.” He grabbed the cotton on her hips and pulled them down, leaving them on the floor like he promised. Y/N’s thighs were shaking from all the teasing he had done already. He licked from her inner knee to where he promised to take care of her, latching his mouth onto her clit. She gasped at the feeling of his warm tongue, closing her eyes. He used his tongue to create figure-8’s against her clit, and slowly pushed one finger into her. At this, she threw her head back, resting the crown of her skull gently against the cabinet behind her. She laced her fingers through Fred’s hair, now pulling hard. He groaned in his own pleasure, creating vibrations against her clit which in turn made her moan. He pushed a second finger into her, slowly pumping them as he worked her clit. After adding a third finger, her legs were shaking violently, showing she was nearing the edge. He quickly swapped his fingers and tongue, using his thumb to rub circles against her clit and sticking his tongue as deep as he could inside of her warm pussy. He had his other arm wrapped around her thigh, one of her hands reaching to hold the hand there as she neared her end even faster than before.
“I want you to say my name when you cum, baby, can you do that for me?” He paused briefly, looking up at her, she nodded vigorously. His tongue returned to it’s warm reserve inside of her. The motions he made with his thumb against her clit became faster, and soon enough she was squeezing his hand and nearly screaming his name. Fred waited for her to stop squeezing his hand to stand up and kiss her on the lips again. “You did so good, baby.” He whispered against her lips.
“Freddy,” She whimpered against his lips. “You haven’t even fucked me yet and I don’t think I’ll be able to walk.” She almost laughed at the thought. He grinned, happy with his work so far. He tucked a strand of her behind her ear, kissing her ear as he spoke.
“You won’t need to, baby. I’ll fuck you right here,” He started licking and kissing her neck again, making her whine. “And I’ll take care of you so you don’t have to walk.” He whispered against her quickly bruising flesh. She whined again, reaching to finish her job unbuttoning his shirt and unzipping his already unbuttoned pants. He let her continue as he wrapped his hand in her hair once and pulled back, exposing the front of her neck to him where he continued his attack. When she finished unbuttoning his shirt he helped her pull it off his shoulders, exposing his freckled and scarred skin on his chest to her. She rubbed her hands against his chest, feeling every individual scar and wondering where each of them came from. He watched her eyes dart around, a small closed-lip smile adorning her face as she felt the raised white scars. He rubbed his thumb against her cheek softly, loving his own view. Using the same hand that was petting her cheek, he lifted her face to look up at his. He pulled her face close to his own and kissed her softly.
“I love you, Y/N.” He whispered against her lips with his eyes closed. She smiled, reaching her face up to kiss his eyelids. Angel kisses on his blonde eyelashes. It was a sweet moment, to remind them both that not only was there no going back after what they were about to do, but also to remind them that this wasn’t just fucking. This was real, unadulterated love. He opened his eyes, looking deeply into hers as she pushed his slacks and boxers down as far as she could with her hands, using her bare feet the rest of the way. He lifted her dress over her head, tossing it somewhere behind him, inevitably landing on some type of baked good. She rested one hand against his jaw, pulling his face close to hers, her other hand pumping his cock and gently rubbing the tip. He closed his eyes, letting out a deep breath at the feeling of her small hand around him. He rested one hand on her jaw, mirroring her. His other hand rested on the small of her back to push her closer to him. They kissed gently, feeling like this moment was fragile and could be broken. Y/N moved the hand that was on his cock and squeezed his bicep, quietly communicating that she was ready. He moved his hand from the small of her back to line himself up with her entrance, and as he pushed in the both gasped quietly at the feeling. Fred rested his forehead on Y/N’s shoulder, eyes closed as he waited quietly and politely for her to adjust to his size. After a few moments she tapped him to tell him to move, her eyes squeezed tightly closed for preparation of any pain that would come from his movements. He moved slowly, truly taking this moment to get to know Y/N’s body. He felt every groove inside of her, every dip and small raise in her skin, memorising her inside and out. As they both started to get used to this puzzle-piece moment in which it felt like the clicking of soul-mates finally coming together, they started kissing again. Fred’s tongue entered her mouth, exploring, dead set on memorising her entire body. Her hands found themselves resting on his back, nails digging in every so often. If this had been her sex dream, she would’ve been wondering how many girls had dug their nails into his back, but in person all she could think about was him. He filled her every sense, she could smell him, feel him everywhere, taste him, his freckled skin stuck on her eyes even when they closed, and their shared moans overwhelmed her ears. If this was what making love was, she definitely had never shared that with George.
Fred lowered his hand, rubbing her clit gently as his pace got faster. He wasn’t sure if he had ever felt so good so quickly, he was almost positive he hadn’t ever felt his high come so quickly. As he pounded into Y/N’s g-spot and rubbed her clit, she found herself loudly moaning. Her nails were now leaving deep marks into Fred’s back, and Fred hadn’t even noticed.
“Fred,” She moaned his name loudly, the sound of which made his own high come even faster. Set on finding their highs together, they were flush together. Y/N nor Fred had never been so close to someone, their entire bodies touching. Her legs were wrapped around him, her torso flush against his and her face buried into his chest. His face was buried into her neck, leaving occasional kisses to avoid his own moans. Quickly, they found their highs together. After hitting her g-spot so many times, she warned him. He quietly thanked Godric, his own high coming as well. So as they came together, panting, completely embraced, they felt loved. They’d both felt fucked-out before, but this felt different. This felt simultaneously heavy and weightless on their hearts, and they stayed together for a long time. They kissed quietly, Fred not really wanting to leave her, and she not wanting him to leave her either. Before he pulled out she spoke.
“I love you too, Freddy.”

Truth or Dare
Tumblr media
(Spencer Reid x fem!Reader)
The one where Spencer is married with children and JJ confesses her love for him. Length: 2.7k A/N: this is technically a bonus chapter of The Receptionist and the Profiler but can definitely be read as a standalone. this is my take on the JJ confession, enjoy! don’t be shy, leave a comment or reblog! masterlist
Y/N furiously clicked her mouse in response to her computer screen lagging. She released an exasperated sigh and placed her head into her hands. She could practically feel the bags under her eyes increase in size and depth as she tried to regain control of her breathing. Raising two children and being the BAU’s liaison was proving to be extremely difficult, she couldn’t go out into the field or travel with the team as much. After what happened with Cat Adams, she had a hard time leaving Emelia and Adaline. Emily only requested her help as a liaison in the field when she absolutely needed it, anything else could be taken care of from Quantico. Her head pounded against her palms and her only reprieve from her incessant headache was closing her eyes. She must have dozed off in her office because the next thing she knew, she was waking up to a warm hand squeezing her shoulder.
She shot up in her seat, heart beating at an alarming rate until she was met with her husband’s eyes. Her shoulders instantly relaxed, “You’re back.” She said with relief, standing to wrap him in a tight hug.
“Are you okay?” Spencer asked into her shoulder, squeezing her tighter than usual.
She fought back a yawn and nodded, “Yeah, I’m just exhausted.” She pulled back and rested her hands on his face to inspect for injuries and found none on his face. A bandaged hand wrapped around one of her wrists and she gasped, “What happened?”
“It doesn’t matter, it’s not that deep, just a little gash.” Spencer said dismissively, his thumb rubbing against her wrist. “Let’s go home.” She nodded and quickly packed her things, eager to see her two baby girls.
On her way out, she noticed JJ and Rossi speaking in hushed tones. She managed to wave at them as she and Spencer made their way to the elevator. Rossi waved back, JJ looked away. Y/N had thought nothing of it, perhaps this had been a hard case on her. At least they had Rossi’s wedding tomorrow to look forward to and unwind a little. The girls would be with a babysitter and Y/N was looking forward to dressing up and hopefully getting a little (a lot) wine drunk.
Spencer was silent the entire way home, which wasn’t uncommon, so again, Y/N had thought nothing of it. As soon as they made it through the door, Emelia and Adaline came running up to the door, squealing with glee. Each parent scooped up a baby girl and showered them with kisses until they switched.
Here, with a beautiful healthy daughter in his arms, he could forget about all the confusion of JJ’s confession. Spencer usually dealt with these difficult things on his own and in his head. He hadn’t had time to process it fully to bring it to his wife. He would deal with it later, right now, all he wanted was to spend time with his three favorite girls. Y/N hadn’t noticed anything different in the way Spencer was acting around the girls, but each hug he gave her felt a little tighter. She appreciated it and was definitely not about to complain about receiving tighter hugs from her husband.
The suspicions began the next day at Rossi’s wedding. With the girls not serving as a distraction, Y/N began to see the signs of Spencer retreating into himself. She hadn’t heard all the details of the last case yet, but Emily will soon let her know.
Emily was in the middle of giving a speech when Y/N snuck a look at Spencer beside her. He was politely listening, but everything about his eyes let her know that he was elsewhere. She caught JJ’s eye across the room, it seems as though JJ was staring at her husband as well. Before Y/N could ask with her eyes, JJ had looked away once more, the aversion of her gaze hinting at shame. A sinking feeling resided in her chest.
She leaned towards him, linking their arms together, her heart strings intertwining with his in some metaphysical sense. Her sudden affection made him turn to her and send her a small smile. He quieted down the question in her eyes with a tender kiss to her cheek, knowing for a fact that the woman across the room watched what happened, a silent declaration of what he chose, what he will always choose.
Before they knew it, the music began blaring with Luke, Matt, and Penelope stealing the show with their dance moves. Y/N couldn’t contain her laughter as she watched them all prance around. In true Garcia fashion, she approached her and pulled her up to begin dancing. Y/N looked back towards Spencer for help but he just laughed and encouraged her to dance. All too soon, the music morphed into a slow paced rhythm. Turning around to ask Spencer to dance, she found the seat to be empty. Eyes flitting to the bar, she found Spencer and JJ in the middle of a conversation.
“Hey, you can dance with me!” Tara said, whisking Y/N away from the scene. Y/N sent her a small grateful smile, but her curiosity was heavy.
“Is JJ okay? Did something happen?” Y/N asked Tara as they slow danced together. Tara was visibly taken aback by the question, she thought Spencer would have told Y/N about what had happened by now, but she decided that it was not her story to tell.
“Yeah, JJ’s totally fine.” Tara said dismissively and began steering Y/N away from that conversation. They soon broke apart to gather around the cake. Y/N was only half paying attention until she saw JJ take her place next to Will and was alerted of Spencer’s presence as he placed his hands on her hips from behind. She leaned into his warmth and let it go for the final time that night, she would ask about it when they were alone. But by the time the night ended, JJ was not on Y/N’s list of important things to remember. She was a little bit past tipsy and Spencer practically had to drag her out to their car.
The weekend went by smoothly, Spencer had his head buried in mountains of papers from his students even though Y/N told him that he could read them online and save so much paper. The weekend had come and gone and they were back in the office in the blink of an eye. The awkwardness between the two lifelong friends resumed. JJ was arguably the closest person to Spencer on the team (besides Y/N of course), so she found it more than weird that the two were actively avoiding each other.
Lunch time came around and Y/N had had enough of it, she snuck into Penelope’s office.
“Hey, sunshine!” Penelope greeted, taking a hefty bite out of her donut.
“Hey.” Y/N said, leaning against the desk adjacent to Penelope’s, stirring her coffee.
“What’s going on?” Penelope stared at her knowingly. Y/N immediately put the coffee down and stared at Penelope.
“Did something happen between JJ and Spence on the last case?” Y/N asked directly, deciding that beating around the bush would help no one.
Y/N didn’t miss the slight widening of Penelope’s eyes, “Wh-what? Why would you ask that?”
“They’ve been acting really awkward around each other and JJ’s been avoiding me like the plague.” Y/N huffed.
Penelope panicked, stuttering out, “I uh, I really think you should talk to Spencer.”
“No one’s telling me anything! Not you, not Tara! Should I be worried?” She asked, exasperated.
“Honestly? No, I don’t think so. Spencer loves you.” Penelope said surely.
Spencer loves you.
What does that even mean?
Y/N turned on her heel, leaving her coffee and marched all the way to Spencer’s desk. The carpet drowned out the clickity clack of her heels. Spencer raised his head from his files to smile at her.
“My office, now.” Y/N said simply, her tone neither angry nor cool, his smile retreating as he followed her like a puppy. Matt and Luke shared a knowing look between them and pretended to focus on their work so as to not get caught in the line of fire.
She closed the door and the blinds, crossing her arms and turning to see him taking a seat, “Care to explain why Garica just felt the need to assure me that my husband loves me? Or to explain why you and JJ have been acting so weird and having secret conversations? Or maybe why she’s been acting like I don’t exist for the past 3 and a half days?”
For a moment, Spencer looked like a child who had been caught stealing cookies out of the cookie jar, then his face returned to an unnerving mask of calm. This mask made her panic even more.
“Does this have anything to do with the hostage situation you two were in?” Y/N asked, she had just gone over the report that morning, but it had little to no details.
Spencer took a deep breath and rested both hands on his thighs, in any other circumstance, Y/N might have been tempted to sit across his lap and kiss him until they were both red in the face. But not right now, right now she needed answers.
“Yes, well--okay, yes. Something did happen. I promise I was going to tell you, but it never seemed like the right time to bring it up, I didn’t want to bring it up at home around the girls, and I didn’t want to bring it up here either.” Spencer said, leaning back to rest against the chair.
“What happened?” Y/N took a seat across from him, no longer feeling the need to attack, but rather to understand.
“JJ and I were being held hostage. The unsub, Casey, was about to shoot JJ and me. He told her to reveal something that she’d never say aloud and she…” Spencer swallowed, trailing off. Y/N leaned forward, already expecting where this was going.
“She told me that she’s always loved me and that she was just too scared to say it before.” He spoke softly, meeting her eyes.
Y/N blinked slowly, “Bullshit.”
Spencer furrowed his eyebrows at her.
“Are you sure she wasn’t just saying that in front of the unsub to get him to back down? Are you sure it was real?” Y/N said, standing up from her seat. She paced around her room, trying to piece together any evidence from the past few years that could back up that claim.
JJ had been the one to push Y/N and Spencer together. JJ couldn’t have had all these feelings for Spencer. What about Will? Henry? Michael? They were her and Spencer’s Godchildren for crying out loud. Y/N’s brain was going a hundred miles a minute. Spencer watched her pace around the small office.
“I, I don’t know. It seemed real.” Spencer wished what he had to say would calm his wife, but he really didn’t know at this point.
“Do you…” she swallowed, the question heavy on her tongue, “do you feel the same?” The tears were ready, resting at her waterline, waiting for the call. Her insecurities were ready to take over.
“No!” Spencer objected, standing from his seat. Normally, his defensive reply would have made her suspicious, but the look of utter shock and hurt on his face quelled any doubt that arose.
“No, I don’t. I love you. I have always loved you. God, you know this, I’ve loved you even when you weren’t mine to love. I’ve loved you since I was just a baby faced profiler and you were just a receptionist. I will never stop loving you and the girls, Y/N.” He said definitively, walking towards his wife and grabbing her clammy hands in his. He pressed a gentle kiss to each of her hands, staring into her teary eyes.
The cavern in her chest began to patch itself up as he looked at her that way. She had no choice but to believe him.
“Okay, I believe you.” She smiled, a tear escaping. He reached up to tenderly swipe it away. With a simple tilt of his chin, he captured her lips in an intense, passionate kiss and like all of their kisses, he took her breath away. But something about the desperation in this kiss made it hard for her lungs to perceive air. He had a point to prove.
A few moments of silence passed between them and Y/N took a deep breath, “I should talk to JJ.”
Spencer hadn’t pulled away yet, “It’s your choice, my love.” He placed a soft kiss to the center of her forehead and stepped back to catch her eye, “Are we okay?”
Y/N couldn’t help but smile at him, “Yes, we’re okay. Can you ask JJ to come in after you leave?”
With a nod and another kiss, he left the office to go summon JJ. Y/N took her seat at her desk and folded her hands in anticipation, the undeniable and unrelenting feelings of anger and jealousy coursing right underneath her skin.
A gentle knock sounded throughout the small office and Y/N invited her to take a seat before her.
“Listen, Y/N, if this is about what I said back--” JJ began, but Y/N wasn’t interested in any of the formalities.
“Did you mean it?” Y/N asked, making direct eye contact. JJ was taken aback at the similarities between Y/N’s question and Spencer’s. They had both asked in the same way. She wasn’t ready back then. But she is now.
“Yes..” JJ whispered, averting her gaze once more. The gaze of the wife of the man she thought she loved was too heavy to face straight on.
“Yes, what? Do you love my husband?” Y/N spoke with an unrecognizable sharp edge to her voice.
“Yes, I love him. I’ve always known it. Things just got too messy too quickly. I have Will and the boys and I would never ever give them up. Spence-- Spencer has you and the girls and I could never dream of taking him away from you.” JJ spoke clearly, her eyes reddening and glistening with unshed tears.
“You are the perfect wife, I watched him fall in love with you. You’re also the best mother to his children, it’s hard not to be jealous of you.” JJ continued. The sinking feeling returned to her chest.
“You have nothing to be jealous of, I’m just doing my best. You’re one of the greatest mothers I have ever known. I need you to tell me that this is where it ends, JJ. I cannot afford the stress.” Y/N replied.
“This is where it ends, I promise. It’s over. He has you and Emelia and Adaline and I have Will, Henry, and Michael. If we were ever meant to be, then it would have happened. He deserves you, after everything he’s been through. He deserves you.” She said tearfully, wiping away stray tears.
Y/N stood from her seat and walked around her desk to embrace her in a tight hug. JJ cried into her shoulder, “I’m so sorry. I’m sorry, Y/N. I didn’t mean for any of this to happen.”
“I know. It’s okay, we’re okay.” Y/N rubbed her shoulder, pulling away.
“Are things going to be awkward now?” JJ chuckled, blowing her nose.
“Only if you keep avoiding me.” Y/N joked back, JJ promised she wouldn’t and excused herself to get back to work.
Y/N followed her out and stopped at her door. Leaning against her door frame, she caught her husband’s eye across the bullpen and sent him a smile and a nod.
It’ll be alright.
They’ll be alright.
