DYK…
Tumblr media
whitetip reef shark is slender and sleek, with characteristic white markings on the tips of several of its fins. these markings gave it its common name. it is an agile swimmer well suited for its mostly reef habitat existence.
whitetip reef shark rely on electroreceptors in their snouts to detect the electrical charges of nearby prey. although they are formidable predators, whitetip reef sharks are preyed upon by larger fish, such as tiger sharks and giant grouper.
whitetip reef shark are the only shark in Hawaiian waters with the ability to stop swimming and rest for long periods at a time, making them more commonly observed by divers.

leopard sharks move with quiet agility, but are spooked easily and don't much enjoy human swimming companions. this shy behaviour makes them a very non-threatening species to us, as they have never been known to act aggressively.
leopard sharks inhabit the shallow waters of the north pacific, ranging from oregon to mexico.
leopard sharks have a third eyelid called a “nictitating membrane.”
leopard sharks can have very large litters, with females giving birth to up to nearly 40 pups. they can have up to 55 teeth in their upper jaw and 45 in the lower jaw.

blue sharks are one of the most easily recognized sharks. they have a distinct colouration, a deep indigo blue from above and a vibrant blue on their sides, changing to white underneath.
blue sharks birth live young that hatch internally. the gestation period is 9–12 months. average blue shark litters are 25–50 pups, but can get up to 135 pups.
blue sharks have not had sufficient opportunity to reproduce in Mediterranean waters, which is one reason why that population is assessed as critically endangered. they are caught extensively in high seas targeted fisheries and are vulnerable to fishing pressure.

port Jackson sharks?
DYK…
Tumblr media
port jackson sharks are considered to be harmless, however, if provoked they could pose a threat.
port jackson sharks are a nocturnal, bottom dwelling 'bullhead' shark endemic to the Great Southern Reef. these sharks grow up to 1.65m and can live for more than 30 years. they usually live at depths of less than 100 metres but have been known to go as deep as 275 metres.
port jackson sharks are not an endangered species and is not used as a common food supply. it is, however, useful when scientists are hoping to study bottom-dwelling sharks and can be vulnerable to being caught as bycatch.

have u posted anything in relation to epaulette sharks?
DYK…
Tumblr media
epaulette sharks are one of nine species of “walking shark.” they have evolved to be able to use their strong pectoral fins to “walk” across the seafloor and even stretches of land. they can also switch off non-essential brain functions to conserve energy in dangerously low-oxygen environments like shallow tide pools.
epaulette sharks lay an average of four eggs over a month in tough, leathery egg cases. in approximately 130 days, the young sharks hatch. they are totally independent and ready to fend for themselves.

frilled shark has 300 trident-shaped teeth, each needle-tooth has a cusp and two cusplets; the rows of teeth are widely spaced, with 19–28 tooth rows in the upper jaw, and 21–29 tooth rows in the lower jaw.
frilled shark is sometimes called a living fossil due to its lineage that goes back 80 million years. however, the frilled shark's lifespan is about 25 years.
frilled shark has the longest gestation period of all vertebrates. it can take up to 3.5 years for it to give birth to their pups. litter sizes vary from two to fifteen.

10 facts about cookie cutter sharks :D
DYK… (part 3??)
Tumblr media
cookiecutter sharks are named for the way it cuts a wound in whales, dolphins, seals and large fish. It grips the sides of its prey with fierce jaws and gouges out a circular, cookie-shaped piece of flesh.
cookiecutter sharks lose several sets of teeth throughout their lifetimes. this process ensures that they always have sharp, healthy teeth capable of feeding by their preferred strategy. unlike other species, though, cookiecutter sharks apparently purposely swallow the teeth that they lose.
cookiecutter sharks have an elongated, cigar-shaped body with a short, bulbously rounded snout. the large, oval, green eyes are placed forward on the head, enough to allow the shark to have binocular vision.
cookiecutter sharks are slow swimmers. using vertical migration, these sharks will migrate to the surface at night in order to hunt prey. during the day the sharks will return back to the deep ocean in order to escape predators.
In march 2009, maui resident Mike Spalding was bitten by a cookie cutter shark while swimming across Alenuihaha Channel.
cookiecutter sharks are thought to use the bioluminescent photophores on their belly for counterillumination. counterillumination is like camouflage for these sharks: the light they emit blends in well with the slightly lighter water above them, so an animal looking up at them can't see them very well.
cookiecutter sharks are also called cigar sharks!!
The International Union for Conservation of Nature has listed the cookiecutter shark under least concern, as it is widely distributed, has no commercial value, and is not particularly susceptible to fisheries.
