Favorite Pokémon? 👀

omg i was thinking about this lately, i've been revisiting nostalgia from pokemon. there's too many designs/concepts i like!

i'll give you a really vague answer though because i'm a bit too indecisive, my favorite type hands down is probably ghost type, so naturally anything spooky and cute like gengar is a 10/10 for me. the old games like pkmn red/blue + crystal are super nostalgic so i tend to gravitate towards some old designs. but usually for pkmn starters i would choose water types, so stuff like totodile, mudkip, piplup are always the cutest. i remember growing up and having plush toys of all of them. water type has to be one of my favorites as well~

there's a lot of clever ghost pkmn designs. i love reading the spooky pokedex entries. i'm a fan of horror films and scary things in general. but i specifically really liked the concept of froslass from gen IV, she's a humanoid ghost/ice type that resembles a woman in a kimono, based on japanese folklore. (i remember it evolving from snorunt when exposed to a dawn stone in diamond/pearl/platinum)

anyway what makes this design one of my favorites...

froslass is clearly inspired by yuki-onna, which translates into snow woman (雪女). in japanese folklore these ghosts prey on travelers that get lost in blizzards and snowstorms near mountains. does that not sound spooky and cool as hell? anyway here's the pokemon legends: arceus pokedex entry. we have no choice but to stan froslass...

Squirtle line: 10/10 would recommend, had one and I loved my blastoise dearly

Charmmander line: 6/10 overrated

Bulbasaur line: the chunky baby to big boy pipeline I give many kisses 10/10

Chickorita line: 5/10 little weird but it’s got spirit

Cyndaquil line: 10/10 they’ve got an awkward teen phase and I’m a little biased because I thought a typhlosion was a real weather pattern

Totodile line: 10/10 just a little bitey guy and I love all their names, exceptionally fun name scheme

I’ve really got the least experience with these ones. Don’t know why I’ve just seen em the least.

Mudkip line: 10/10 A derp. A real derp and it’s always a derp

Torchic line: 8/10 Fighting fire chicken. Cool (though I do not like Combusken at all-)

Treecko line: 3/10 I get what it’s going for but I…don’t really like how they executed it.

Turtwig line: 10/10 love the idea and execution behind these guys!

I remember these guys unreasonably well, I guess I watched a decent amount of this season to remember it.

Snivy line: 4/10 like the actual first two designs, don’t like the third. The general personality of this line I don’t like. Little grass twerp is judging me-

Tepig line: 10/10 Chunky to WWE pipeline, also Emboar is fun to say and I like it’s tag teaming with the anteater thing against the metal ants. I like those kinds of prey predator relationships in Pokémon

Oshawott line: 3/10, like Oshawott, don’t like the other two that much. It does get another point for the name reminding me of osha though.

Fennekin line: 8/10 despite my bias cuz it was my starter I really hate how delphox looks. I wish it quadrupedal. If I were to replay X I’d see if I can find and everstone and just keep Braxian

Fun little story Anon but me and @themudokonmessiah have been talking about possible Oddworld crossover au stuff in dm's.

Not only that but a few folks in our discord made some Pokemon teams for our characters a while back. Be it for Oddworld or otherwise.

I am a hardcore pokemon fan that has been playing since Red and Blue first released in north america, own all the main line pokemon games and a few spin offs, and i plan to add scarlet to my collection when it launches ((will get violet later down the line. few people I plan to play with are getting violet and i'm the one with scarlet for trading purposes))

You want their starter choices from every main pokemon game? If you are expecting detailed reasons why they chose it then i'll have to omit most of them. There are so many main line games after all. It'll make this post clogged. You'll have to ask me those questions in another ask. Sorry Anon.

I'm currently omitting Scarlet and Violet until I find out what the final evolutions are for those ones.

Nintendo is a so-called game company, but a game company wouldn't overlook such trivial details that are a huge impact on not only their games but their players. It's almost like they want to make all of their 'fans' or just people who could care less about them themselves and only play certain games not want to come back for any sequels or prequels to their games. It's like they didn't even bother to think about this mess until a bunch of people finally open their mouths about it, but that is a hard task. Even if I get no one's attention I want to make some points that at least everyone in the community can agree on.

Animal Crossing

People have either been playing animal crossing for years or only joined with the recently made New Horizons along with me.  But in the most recent games, there have been a few things that are too blaring to overlook. It's almost like Nintendo wants to watch players suffer, which if the players suffer, the company suffers greatly too.

So the aspect is to have a bunch of villagers on your island and do a bunch of DIY's that look like 5-minute-crafts came up with how to make things. But I digress, for the most part, it does make some logical sense. But when you need to craft over ten packs of fish bait, it gets more than annoying. Or need to craft maybe four or ten chairs or benches or something seasonal. to have a perfect seasonal island for a month before switching it up again. It would be more than lovely to have the option to pick more than one. I know if you mash A a bunch it goes faster but that doesn't exactly make too much of a difference if you're making a bunch of the same item. Not only that but if you're buying maybe 10+ nook miles tickets, let's say you have 40,000 Nook Points,  You can get twenty whole NMT, but pressing A and waiting, doing that twenty or more times depending on how many points you have? It's unbearable and not even finding the villager you want after hopping island to island and waiting hours and mashing A for the amount you want or need.

It shouldn't be hard to program in a counter. You make updates for all the wrong things, I feel.

Like the update to Animal Crossing Pocket Camp, needing a certain camera lens to play a game that actually doesn't require a camera lens like that? Nintendo had an update in November of last year where they cut more than half of their player base. Their phone needed a gyroscope camera, not even phones bought last year could run the game, apparently. I was one of the players affected. I spend actual money on that game. For what? Cosmetics I can't even see anymore? Can't even use? After a month of nothing I had to uninstall, I was told that I should wait but I just didn't have the storage anymore. Sadly. I went back to see the reviews, most people left even if they could still play it because they couldn't play with their friends or couldn't play period.

I want to point out Pokemon Go!

Pokemon Go uses a camera feature for their 3D Pokemon models, which is amazing! But why does that work and yet Pocket camp doesn't? Well, technically Nintendo doesn't own Pokemon Go, Niantic does. Niantic uses different software than Nintendo itself, that and they're two different apps, they were made very differently. But then why does the camera have to be a gyroscope for Pocket Camp and not Pokemon Go? Pokemon GO uses it's AR feature more than Pocket camp! This is true, but the camera feature isn't even needed with Pokemon Go either, it's optional. So then why is Pocket Camp different? Well, Google told app developers that all apps needed to be 64bit by next year. But what does 64bit have to do with a camera lens? The gyroscope lens is implemented in all 64bit phones, that's the difference. Pokemon Go might update soon too but for now, people with a 32bit phone can play it and use its AR features. But I don't know why Nintendo would conform to Google's rules, as Nintendo is its own company and if it's still getting money... Google takes a percentage of money from players as tax for the service, so both Nintendo and Google are taking a hit. I really don't get their thought process here, people are canceling their subscriptions and spending less on their games, people on Reddit and in Google reviews are both saying the same thing.

Oh, but this is where I talk about Pokemon Go now.

Pokemon Go

Pokemon Go is an amazing game that Nintendo can't touch. Until they wormed their way in with Pokemon Go Eevee/Pikachu. Soon you'll be able to transfer Pokemon from go onto your switch games! But... they can't return back to your phone. Here's the thing I want to do, if I have a two-star Pokemon in Pokemon Go and transfer it to make it a three-star with vitamins then I should be able to then send it back into Pokemon Go and dominate. But that's the thing. I can't. We don't even know if they way to make it go two ways or if it'll forever be a one-way transfer only.

I love how Niantic added Jessy and James even though Jessy as a 3d model looks... strange. I wonder if they'll add Butch and Cassidy, since they were also semi-part of the lore, they mainly just competed with Jessy and James. But this is just a thought I wanted out there. I want more diversity, honestly. But it would take a long time to implement, but I think it would be cute to see how it is implemented. It could be an event type deal and I'd still be happy just to even see them.

I want to congratulate them for finally putting in Kalos starters! I've been wanting a FenFen (Fennekin.)

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers

Okay, so I've played Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Time and Darkness, and let me tell you the anime for it was amazing too. I wanted more. There was a 3Ds version, hated it. Circles... I gave up and restarted twice and haven't touched it for so long since it just.. wasn't as good as the original. I've been meaning to play Sky but one thing at a time. There has been a lot of people talking about the starters, and boy oh boy I'm on the bandwagon late. I was curious about the personality quiz but seeing everyone say want starter is best with what partner and seeing how everyone said 'Don't be Totodile and Mudkip!' or 'Don't be Eevee and Skitty!' it just made me confused since you... technically couldn't have two of the same type of starters. What in the heck were those people thinking? But that isn't entirely a point. The point is starters. In the switch version of Mystery Dungeon, there are some things I just cannot say. The starter selection of awful. What happened to the Unova starters? You added Cubone but not Riolu? Where did you put my baby shinx?

The starters were pretty meh, they could have added more in my opinion. The screen surely could handle it. Also, the animations for the starters weren't even special or fantastic so it wouldn't have been that hard. I hate the walking animation for Eevee. I picture for Mudkip and Skitty it's not much better.

I've played it for three days and was so disappointed. First off, my partner, an AI? I had to literally kill him for my starter could get back to the same level. Thanks, blast seeds. But if I am being honest in found it to be so funny. Not only that but in said Dungeons, on any floor the boss could just be there and without warning. You could have explored the entire floor and it just appears randomly, or might not even be there. Hate that.

Also, there are no party rooms. I miss the party rooms. The party rooms are rooms that randomly fill up with Pokemon either if you hit a tile for the party room, somehow get the room by being dropped there with or without your partner (and co), or if you enter it from a path. I barely ever get past them but it would be a good experience. Also, you can only have yourself, your partner, and whatever one Pokemon you want with you. In previous games, you could have two addons. What happened to that?

Not to mention that in the story, you suddenly are exiled and after beating two birbs you then fight, Ninetails covers for you and says it isn't you, and then everything is suddenly.. just okay? All fine and dandy? So many people wanted to literally kill you over a rumor. If you died once you would lose 5,000 P and items. Um, excuse you. At the end of the journey, I gathered a little over 5,000 P because I'm a money-hungry person who wants to open all of the camps. But again, I know we'd have to go and find Ninetails and figure out the story but that.. wasn't the way to do it. You get past maybe six dungeons and are hit with that suddenly. I would get it if it was mid-game and they suddenly found out the secret and everyone was like 'you were so nice, what happened?' 'Why was it you?' 'You lied to all of us' and it broke my heart, that just upset me. None of them even let the starter explain, and even if they did the option was literally only dots. Also, why was my partner so supportive? They're just so baby and it's killing me. That's just my take on what they could have improved on.

Pokémon starters ranked (by non-Pokémon player)

What do I have to declare?

I have no attachments to any generation because I didn’t play Pokémon as a kid. The only interaction I had was Super Smash Brothers on Nintendo 64. This will be solely on how they look and how I think they convey their elemental powers.

How did I do this?

I started by ranking the generations and correcting where I felt there were complete outliers. I feel that, in general, quality is consistent in a generation.

24. Chikorita – Arguably the ugliest Pokémon that’s met to be cute. Necklace lumps would be cool if not biologically concerning. Train should immediately take to nearest nurse.

23. Totodile – This is a good idea gone wrong. The open mouth is not the right look. Eye-shadow should encase upper eyelid, but on the third eyelid is also a good look.

22. Cyndraquil – This is a small creature, that’s about as much as I can say. Honestly, without the flaming back, wouldn’t know it was a fire type.

21. Grookey – This little bastard is taking everyone’s hearts and I don’t get it. I will address my biggest issue later in this list with the highest ranking generation-8 Pokémon.

20. Chespin – Biggest issue: I forget this Pokémon exists. That hurts it the most. Not sure what those lower antennae off the face are.

19. Tepig – I don’t like its stupid nose. Looks far too round, needs more contrasting lines.

18. Scorbunny – Looks more like an ice/fighting type. That’s a thing, right?

17. Snivy – It’s the Tepig issue, too many same-y feeling curves. Those lines on its front make it better.

16. Froakie – It’s just an ugly frog with a shawl. People only like this because Greninja, right?

15. Oshawott – Honestly just a less good looking Piplup. Looks like a friend though.

14. Fennekin – This is just a fire fox. Not impressed because there are like several of these.

13. Chimchar – This is a good monkey. I think the fire butt was a little overkill. I wish it had a long tail instead. Maybe a fire like cowlick on the top of its head would be nice but I know that’s a fire type without the fire queues.

12. Treecko – He’s like creepy Yoshi. Not a bad thing but Broshi is a thing already.

11. Turtwig – I would protect this child with my extra life. It’s got a fat head and I love it. The little twig is a nice touch.

10. Sobble – The issue with gen-8, they all look the same. Circle head, cylinder body of third width, fat legs, and head ornament. Like that’s a big issue. You want your characters to have distinct silhouettes. Yes, when you have over 800 characters, you are going to get some overlap, but you would not want that with your starters. You want them to look distinct from each other at the least. But they don’t. Sobble is just the one I feel best uses this silhouette.

9. Popplio – This seal pup has an interesting aesthetic. I’m not a fan of that. I wish the nose was less pronounced and there was another color on that collar. Very soft round, wish there was more contrasting lines.

8. Piplup – Look at this puffin child. Look at’em. I want one but smaller. 40 cm seems really big; puffins are like 18 cm according to Google.

7. Torchic – Good use of contrasting lines and a good use of the fire aesthetic without setting the poor creature on literal fire. That beak could poke my eye and I would kiss it.

6. Rowlet – This is my brother’s favorite starter. Not a terrible choice. I wish it was a little less round and its wings weren’t uselessly small. I am concerned for its survival viability.

5. Litten – I love cats. Anyone that knows me knows that I will have 4 cats at some point if I can support them. Great use of contrasting colors and lines. It looks anxious, I want to protect and love. Definitely a fire type, though I feel like it should become a fire/dark type next.

4. Mudkip – This is a water cat-axolotl. I am sad that it frowns, why ‘e frownin’?

3. Charmander – This is easily the weakest generation one Pokémon based on design. I know this is a fire dragon, but it is so blobby. I’m not sure what would fix it, but it deserves this spot.

2. Squirtle – I love this turtle. It is obvious that it is a turtle and that it uses water in some way. Looks like baby.

1. Bulbasaur – Another turtle, but it’s also a flower-cat. That’s amazing! I want to hold’em. It would never hurt me or my feelings.

One last note about generation 8, somehow, generation 1 had very similar characters in terms of real-world counterparts but because they look so distinct in silhouette, you know instantly what each one is and its abilities, solely based on silhouettes. Generation 8 does the opposite of this and that’s disappointing.

alola: rowlet. the man, the myth, the legend (tho just for the record there's nothing wrong with popplio you're all just mean)

Recent discussions I’ve had about starter pokémon has led me to think about how I would personally rate them in order of preference. Obviously I know what my tip-top favorites are, but there are so many starters that I can’t list them in order of preference off the top of my head. As such, I’ve decided to take the time to list them all out and do it now.

(Note: Pikachu and eevee aren’t on this list because they don’t count as real starters.)

Since I have different feelings about different evolutionary stages for each starter, I’m going to have three lists: one for first, secondary, and final evolutions. At the end, I’ll list some of my findings about my preferences. Each list starts with my most favorite (#1), and ends with my least (#21). Additionally, my reasoning for why my preferences are they way they are don’t have anything to do with use in the competitive field, or anything like that. This is merely my preference list, which ones I like most, and there’s not even a set criteria. Sometimes it’s which ones I think are cute or cool looking, and other times it’s which ones I have emotional attachment to due to past journeys. And sometimes it’s because I was left with a handful of ones at the end that I was very “ehhhh” about, but I had to put them somewhere, so I did my best.

Overall Findings:

While I’m not too fond of the bulbasaur line overall, I’d actually say that bulbasaur is my favorite stage of that line, because of Ash’s bulbasaur and how much he reminded me of one of our old family dogs, personality-wise. However, the first stage category has some very fierce competition due to how cute everyone is at that stage, so as a result, it looks like I like bulbasuar less than I like ivysaur and venusaur, when that’s actually not the case. (Similar things happened with a few others.)

It seems my favorite starters from each region, going by stage, are: Kanto: First: Charmander Second: Charmeleon Third: Charizard Johto: First: Cyndaquil Second: Quilava Third: Typhlosion Hoenn: First: Treecko Second: Grovyle Third: Swampert Sinnoh: First: Chimchar Second: Monferno Third: Infernape Unova: First: Oshawott Second: Dewott Third: Serperior Kalos: First: Fennekin Second: Braixen Third: Delphox Alola: First: Litten Second: Torracat Third: Decidueye So all in all I’m usually pretty consistent with who my favorite starter is in each region, but in a few cases (Hoenn, Unova, and Alola) I end up wishing I’d picked a different one by the final stage, lmao. (I mean, not entirely, but . . . I prefer the final stages of other starters.) 

Surprising no one, I clearly have a vast preference for fire, at least going by the “by region” list I just made. I choose the fire-type starter in five out of seven regions, and although I do not like incineroar much at all, it still is worth pointing out that I prefer both litten and torracat over popplio, brionne, rowlet, and primarina. (Although it’s a tough call with rowlet, because I do love that little owl quite a lot.)

Going by the original lists, fire-types tend to score higher overall as well. They always occupy the first two ranks (thank you, charmander line and cyndaquil line), and if we look at the lowest number fire-types occupied in each list: First Stage: #14 (leaving seven grass- and water-types after it) Second Stage: #16 (leaving five grass- and water-types after it) Third: #20 (leaving one water-type behind it) (Spiders Incineroar is an outlier and should not have been counted) In all seriousness, incineroar is an outlier for me, because prior to incineroar the last fire-type was #14, which again left six grass- and water-types (and incineroar) behind it. While water- and grass-types tended to fare better in the second and third categories, fire-types were still preferred by a significant margin, particularly when you compare them by regional groups.

In Conclusion:

I really like fire-types and I’m never going to be able to say “no” to the charmander or cyndaquil lines. Which, I mean, we been knew, but it’s still nice to see it all laid out like this.

^ should that say gen oF starters? Buuuut it’s no secret I adore so many of them. Despite my url I am /not/ 100% sure Kalos starters are my absolute favorite starters (*everyone is shocked now*). Unova is definitely close to it too and I gotta say gen 3 and 7 are solid too. Maybe I have to pick Snivy as my fav starter because I love the anime Snivy so much but other top contenders are Chespin, Mudkip, Chikorita, Totodile... Better stop here, I guess.

I think pokemon ranger is one of the coolest professions in the poke world but I think my personality would be more suitable for a lab assistant or something like that. I probably wouldn’t do well as a competitive battler (or coordinator).

You know, talking even briefly about how I don’t care much for the Gen 5 starters has resulted in me wanting to share my opinions about starter Pokemon as a whole.  Like, what I think of each of their evolutionary lines.  So let’s do that.  Not really a ranking or anything, just my opinions on each.

BULBASAUR LINE Bulbasaur’s evolution line is great, fight me.  They’re little dinosaur creatures with a giant flower that blooms on its back as it evolves, how is that not cool?  Grass/Poison was super redundant in Gen 1, putting it into conflict with every other grass type bar Tangela, but nowadays it’s...slightly less common of a typing?  Okay, it’s pretty standard.  But I really like the concept behind them.  Also, I can’t remember where I saw this, but someone insulted Venusaur’s design and I want you to know I’m judging.

CHARMANDER LINE Okay, Charmander?  Super cute, love the little lizard creature.  Charmeleon?  Okay, bigger and angrier, kind of a thing with Pokemon as they evolve.  Charizard?  The most stock-standard “dragon” you can imagine.  It’s literally just a Dragon.  Had they not been cowards about the typing back then, it probably would be Fire/Dragon.  But no, Fire/Flying.  I really don’t like Charizard.  It’s so standard and yet it’s held up as one of the best Pokemon designs, and for what?  For being a standard, boring-ass dragon.  Listen kids, dragons are boring, and we need to get over them.

SQUIRTLE LINE Squirtle itself is just adorable.  I love this thing so much, it’s honestly becoming my favorite of the gen 1 starters, even over Bulbasaur who I adore.  I’ve heard others mention that Wartortle is kinda underwhelming, but really, it’s not worse than Charmeleon or Ivysaur, and they’re just fine, so I think those people are just mean.  As for Blastoise itself, it’s a cool concept, though you do have to wonder how it got metallic cannons coming out of its shell.  Really doesn’t make much biological sense at all, which proves once again that anything that genwunners complain about Gen 5 being stupid for, Gen 1 did it too.  Overall great, probably turning into my favorite of the evolution lines.

CHIKORITA LINE Okay, I really like this evolution line, but for contrarian reasons.  Chikorita is not the cutest of the starters in Gen 2.  Cyndaquil is.  Its concept of having a giant flower around its neck isn’t bad, but Venusaur’s just a little more interesting in concept.  But ultimately, I still really like this line.  Because it’s the worst starter line from a competitive standpoint.  It’s so bad it’s hard to use even in the main game.  This poor thing deserves love, and if you hate on them, you are a bad person.

CYNDAQUIL LINE Okay, real talk: Cyndaquil was my go-to as a kid.  It’s so cute!  It’s such a cool concept, too.  The evolution line is a little stale, though?  I know the other starters aren’t exactly much better, but it really feels like it’s just slowly elongating with no substantial differences between the forms.  Also, mono-Fire feels like a huge waste on such a cool concept.  Like, imagine if this thing got a secondary Electric or Ground type or something.  Yes, horrific 4x weaknesses, I understand that, but counterpoint: it’d be cool.  And that’s really what matters.  Not like Typhlosion’s exact copy of Charizard’s stats did it any favors to begin with.  Still, this line is probably my favorite of the generation for one, singular reason.  It’s not a reptile.  Every other starter up to this point was some kind of reptile!  Gen 1 had this whole dinosaur motif going on, and Chikorita’s basically a dinosaur thing while Totodile is an alligator...crocodile...thing.  Thank you, Cyndaquil, for being the most unique animal type of the starters.  Even if your evolution path is kinda boring.

TOTODILE LINE Totodile’s line is...interesting.  It starts out as a cute little critter, and as many evolutions do, becomes a huge hulking monstrosity in its final form.  Feraligatr is pretty cool, and I do think it’s interesting how it’s the lowest level for final evolution of all starters.  That was a neat trade-off.  But man, Croconaw’s design just looks...odd.  It’s probably supposed to be like an egg pattern, but it really looks like a weird caveman cloth print, and it doesn’t look great.  It’s like an awkward teen years before getting to be a fairly cool adult.

TREECKO LINE Treecko was always my least favorite of the Gen 3 starter lines, and I never really knew quite why I was so lukewarm about it.  Spoilers, I adore the other two, but Treecko never really stood out.  I think my comments on Cyndaquil gave me a realization as to why: it’s another reptile creature.  It’s a cool-looking evolution line, but it’s still a reptile.  And I’m about reptiled out.  Still, we have to admit that Grovyle is super cool, both because of its sleek design, and its role in Explorers of Sky.

TORCHIC LINE Prior to Gen 6 producing the greatest starter of all time, Torchic was my stated favorite.  Listen, Fire/Fighting was a cool typing back when it happened the first time.  It wasn’t until it kept happening that everyone got sick of it forever.  A kickboxing chicken is also just about the funniest way to go with the typing, too.  You can’t deny how imaginative this line is.  Plus, the first form is super adorable.  Tiny little chicken, doing its best.  I love it so...  And its final form looks nice, too.  Really, the designs of Gen 3 were all spectacular.

MUDKIP LINE Mudkip was the one that gave Torchic a run for its money.  Mudkip itself is super adorable and precious, and while it and all its evolutions can look a little dopey, they have a lot of charm in their design.  Plus, Water/Ground is an awesome typing.  Quagsire did it first, yes, but that didn’t make it any less cool.

TURTWIG LINE Believe it or not, I don’t have very strong opinions about most of the Gen 4 starters.  Like Gen 5, I feel like none of them stuck with me that strongly, and any playthrough of the game, I’m perfectly fine dumping the starter.  That said, if I had to pick a favorite of them, it’s Turtwig.  I guess I just like turtles.  It’s mostly the concept behind its final form that I love.  It carries a giant tree on its back, and packs a fairly unique Grass/Ground typing.

CHIMCHAR LINE And now the exact opposite.  From day 1, I never liked Chimchar.  First off, I do not like monkeys.  I just don’t.  Secondly, Infernape stole the exact same typing as Blaziken, which is not only shitty, but also really boring.  Every other starter so far has been fairly unique in typing choices, and this asshole is gonna just do the exact same thing as last gen?  Oh, I’m sorry, it gets to be way faster but a bit less strong but still really strong.  Fuck Infernape.

PIPLUP LINE Piplup is cute, though.  And having its final form be some emperor penguin that’s apparently made of steel is awesome.  Torterra is the favorite from this gen, but man, Empoleon had such a cool typing it was hard to not consider it the most interesting.

SNIVY LINE Snivy’s alright.  It had a solid design, and I can understand why Smugleaf caught on as the fan favorite.  That said, that’s kinda all it’s got.  Serperior is plain boring, and it’s the only Grass starter not to get Earthquake for coverage at any point.  The only thing to its name is Contrary, and somehow it’s on its way to being the highest competitively ranked Grass starter, even above Mega Venusaur.  Which just goes to show that competitive Pokemon is broken beyond all repair and we should probably torch it all and start over.

TEPIG LINE I can’t believe they gave us three Fire/Fighting types in a row.  I’m gonna say it: if Emboar had gotten literally any other typing, it’d be my favorite of this gen.  Not even a contest, really.  Emboar looks cool, and Tepig is adorable.  Sure, Pignite is...a little awkward of a design, but that’s fine, it stood up.  It’s not lying to me unlike some middle stage fire starters I could mention.  But the fact that it’s part Fighting means it’s a huge disappointment.

OSHAWOTT LINE Oh wait, except Oshawott is also a huge disappointment.  An adorable little otter to a cool samurai otter, to whatever the hell is going on with Samurott.  “Steve, it can stand on its back legs and has the sword thing so-” no.  No it does not.  You know why?  Because it’s not drawn like that.  If you wanted to keep the samurai thing going, it’d be drawn and displayed as bipedal.  Instead, you gave us water horse, whose special attack is higher than its physical attack.  This should’ve been the favorite of the generation, but that final form does not look good, does not make sense for the line, and is mono-Water.  Not even a dual typing to keep things interesting?  Sad.  So I guess I don’t have a favorite of Gen 5 starters.  Because none of them are consistently good.

CHESPIN LINE Gen 6 did many things wrong.  Starters were not one of them.  Chespin is adorable and wonderful.  People made fun of Quilladin, but really, it’s the same deal as Pignite: it looks a little awkward but ends on a high note.  Chesnaught looks great, and the paladin concept is great, giving it a lot of good support moves and a Grass/Fighting type that is never really good but is interesting.  I like it a lot, but it’s massively overshadowed by...

FENNEKIN LINE Behold, the greatest starter line ever made.  They gave me a fox!  A Fire/Psychic fox!  Do you know how long I had waited?  Literally since Ninetales.  Fennekin is adorable, Braixen is the sassiest thing ever I love it, and Delphox is still an excellent witch design.  If there is any flaw this line could possibly have, it’s that Braixen should have the Psychic typing and access to some of the tech Delphox does.  Oh, and that the evolution line is competitive trash and has gotten literally nothing of value while a certain bastard-ass frog gets like 12 different favors over nothing.

FROAKIE LINE This is the worst starter line of all time.  Froakie itself was fine.  The idea of going ninja-theme on the frogs?  Fine.  I don’t care about ninjas at all, but fine.  That should’ve been the end of it.  But no.  It could’ve been just as simple as “not my preference” and move on.  And it should be.  But instead, they give it Protean, one of the most broken abilities in the series, on top of its blistering speed.  Hell, in ORAS, they gave it Gunk Shot, which rounded its coverage so perfectly it got banned to fucking Ubers.  So obviously, we went too far, right?  Time to dial it back.  Haha, idiot.  In the change to Gen 7, they give its multi-hit priority move a special designation instead of physical, because god forbid this bougie-ass frog have to work for anything in its goddamned life.  Oh, and we gave it a special snowflake form based on the anime, that gets like 50 more base stat points than a goddamned mega evolution.  Because, again, god forbid this bougie frog have to work for a damned thing in its life.  I thought it was blatant favoritism that Charizard got two megas.  I thought it couldn’t get any more obvious who their favorite starter was.  I was a goddamned idiot.  They could’ve gone way harder, and they did.  Greninja deserves nothing but getting its ass nerfed into the ground where it belongs.

ROWLET LINE You know, I actually wish the Rowlet line was better than it is.  Rowlet itself is cute, and while the final form’s design isn’t really my thing, the concept of it being an extinct bird and thus being part Ghost is...morbidly hilarious.  It’s also an archer!  That’s really neat!  But...it’s not very good.  I blame the speed.  Why did they want to make everything so bulky offensive this gen?  It didn’t work.  Whatever their reason, it’s a nice enough evolution line that just doesn’t quite hit the mark for me.

LITTEN LINE Ooooh boy, okay.  Look.  Litten’s super cute.  Torracat?  I can work with that.  But Incineroar...  Oh my god it looks so weird.  I don’t know what it is.  I think it’s similar to Bewear, in that it really just looks like someone’s fursona, only instead of being a really bad and lazy fursona with no personality, it’s a surprisingly high-quality one with a backstory about being a wrestler that’s simultaneously endearing but also concerning how much effort was put into it.  I know it’s a fire-type thing to stand up in the final form, but maybe...you shouldn’t have.  Maybe you should’ve been like Samurott.  Actually, maybe the two of you should trade places!  Samurott should stand its ass up, and you should sits yours down.  Then everything would be fixed.  Forever.

POPPLIO LINE Were it not for Fennekin being an adorable fox with the best typing, this would be my favorite evolution line.  Popplio was cute.  Maybe a little odd looking, but still cute.  Brionne was one of the prettiest middle evolutions in starter history, and it ends on the most elegant thing in the world.  Primarina is gorgeous, and I adore it.  Much like Fennekin, if there’s any real detriment, it’s that the middle stage doesn’t get the secondary Fairy typing.  Then it would truly be perfect.

"Out of all of the other ways we could've done this, we decided to be extra." you said regretfully, your Mudkip the only one listening. The Water-type Pokémon chirped happily as you both walked out of the backyard and into the daycare center. You readjusted your grip on the egg in your arms as two Rattata pranced around your feet before bolting off deeper into the yard. Around you, different Pokemon played with each other in the grass, slept on the warm rocks, or splashed around in the large waterhole.

You worked at your region's local Pokemon Daycare, owned by your family. It is a good business, since many Pokemon trainers came from all around just to leave their Pokemon in your care, either to temporarily clear space in their bag or to hopefully come back to an egg. You enjoyed every second of your job, since you loved to work with Pokemon and you enjoyed meeting the other trainers of the area.

Except, different could be said a number of months ago.

Nearly a year ago, you were walking around in the nearby forest when you accidentally ran into another Pokemon trainer. You were only looking for berries for the Pokemon of the daycare, but the other trainer, who proclaimed his name was Jackson, insisted that you had to battle him. It was amusing to see him so passionate about the childish, spontaneous battle, despite being quite older than your average amature Pokemon trainer.

Nonetheless, you battled him to satisfy his pleas, and surprisingly won against his Totodile with your Lapras. In a fit of his ego being torn, Jackson began to follow you around that whole day, annoying you to no end. After that, you two became "sworn enemies," according to Jackson. You didn't care about being enemies, but you ended up rolling with the term when his bugging antics never ceased every time you entered the forest.

After about a month, your mother came to you with a new handful of Water-types to personally look after. You had a reputation for your specialized Water Pokemon care, since you adored them and they tended to obediently follow you. Everyone constantly complimented on your bonds with the Water pokemon, but you always responded with a case of humility and pride. However, that pride has taken over much of the humility since the "Water-Type God Jackson" came strolling along, causing you to look at everything associated with him as an act of competition.

However, in this batch of Pokémon, there was a Totodile you were familiar with. Somehow, your sworn enemy was unaware that his top competitor worked at the local daycare.

It only took a handful of extra Oran berries after supper to get the Totodile to love you. Now, best friends with your enemy's partner Pokemon, you came to realize that your rivalry with Jackson was quite childish, and on the week when Jackson came back and saw his beloved Totodile not wanting to let go of your leg, he surprisingly agreed as well. A friendship between your "sworn enemy" grew after that, and eventually, Jackson became your "sworn soulmate."

Now, here you were, with your starter Mudkip, and an egg you found next to Jackson's recently evolved Feraligatr and your Lapras. You were absolutely floored when you found out about the origin of the egg, being extremely happy that your Lapras has laid an egg, but greatly amused from the irony of the situation.

You rubbed the egg to sooth and warm it before pulling it under your shirt to hold it against your stomach. As you began to think about it more, this idea was really dumb, but so was Jackson, so you suspected that he would at least give some kind of reaction you wanted.

Jackson was a very playful boyfriend, and he always wanted to make life interesting. You loved how he tended to find a way to put a smile on your face, no matter how simple and boring the situation could be. His personality was like a recharging battery that charged the parts of you that made you whole.

He also seemed to influence you to be a very mischievous person, however. Lately, Jackson has been throwing prank after prank onto you, and you think it has to do with all of the kids he trains with in the forest. Last week, it was trading out your entire team for a full team of Magikarp. The week before that, it was washing all of your clothes in a strong, honey scent, so that if you wanted to go out to the wilderness, Pokemon would instantly flock to you.

This week, it was your turn to change the tide.

You waited off to the side until you saw the back door of the daycare building open, revealing the love of your life. Jackson probably came back from training his fifteenth Squirtle, which was normal of him. He didn’t notice you right away until you sped-walked to his side.

“Hey (Name), how’s th-”

“Babe guess what I’m pregnant.”

That line certainly stopped Jackson from any sentence he was going to say before. His eyes instantly fell to the abnormal roundness of your stomach, and the way that you were holding yourself and how your Mudkip was perfectly acting along you think you got him hooked on.

“Wh-what?”

At this point you weren’t expecting Jackson to tear up, and in panic you began to drop your facade to keep your boyfriend from crying.

“Babe wait-”

Jackson choked up a gasp and put his hands to his face, the rambling already starting.

“What I- I can’t be a father I think- ohmygod is this even possible we haven’t even done anything like this toge- Can it even happen like this? I don’t know I’m scared what’s going on jagiya-”

You pulled the egg from under your shirt and placed it on the ground next to you hastily so that you can embrace the poor, disheveled Jackson. You, your Mudkip, and Jackson’s Squirtle were cracking up hard, and you tried your best to study your giggles so that you can take Jackson’s face in your hands.

“JAckson- oh my- JACKSON it’s okay, it was just a prank babe everything is okay, I’m not actually pregnant it was just an egg.” Jackson held onto your forearms like handles, his face morphing into confusion, then a pout.

“You are so cute, do you know that? I can’t believe that you were convinced that I was pregnant like did you even notice the shape of the egg? Why would a stomach be that oval-” Jackson groaned, now embarrassed.

“I was so convinced! It was in a flash and I only had a glance and I just immediately thought that we were going to be parents and I felt my whole world falling around me because I was not prepared for any of this.” He pressed his forehead against yours temporarily, made a high-pitched groan of stress, and placed a long kiss on the middle of your forehead. He didn’t pull away, opting to stare into your eyes for a few heartbeats before pouting more.

“You nearly gave me a heart attack from that. I was seriously caught so off guard, I didn’t know what to do next.” You scrunched your face up into a grin and wrapped your arms around Jackson’s torso, not saying anymore.

The two actual parents of the egg were partied by the large waterhole, so you dragged Jackson to return their egg.

“These are the actual parents of this egg,” you explained as you placed the egg near the Feraligatr, since your Lapras was in the water. You looked back up to another surprised face of Jackson.

“Wait- so they- our Pokemon they-” You nodded repeatedly, answering Jackson’s mushed up questions.

Jackson motioned towards the egg, the Pokemon couple, and back between you and him. “That technically makes us parents as well! Technically we are having a child!”

You exhaled through your nose in amusement and took Jackson’s hand.

“After today, let’s leave the parenting to them.”

An RP thing me and @pika-ace did related to BMC Miraculous Ladybug AU where the main seven have a game marathon with the PMD series.

Jeremy: Well...I was thinking that we all play the games, like I would have Red Rescue Team, Michael would have Blue Rescue Team, etc etc
