puppy love
inspired by that one scene in skip and loafer where mitsumi pets shima's hair;; not my best but its cute jskfdh
kim seungmin x reader
genre: fluff, non-idol au
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
you have been staring at seungmin the entire day. not because of anything bad, it’s just that there's this one thing that has been bothering you lately. propping your fist against your chin, you let out a burdened sigh.
ever since he had dyed his hair this captivating caramel color at the start of senior year, which was only a few weeks ago, you can’t seem to get your eyes off him.
the change was refreshing, like seeing him in a completely different light. it had suited him so well, the blondish gold complemented his features like it was supposed to be like that from the start.
whenever you would place your curious gaze on him, the gears in your mind start turning, unable to place your finger on what it reminded you of. it had definitely started to become sort of a routine for you.
you’re also pretty sure seungmin had figured out you have been burning holes at the back of his head during lectures or lunch. he would sometimes look back at you with a quirk of his lip and a questioning gaze, making you shift your focus to somewhere else, cheeks reddening like a child catching glimpses of their crush.
but now you are sure he looked like someone. but who? you’re trying to figure that out yourself.
you don’t know where this sudden fascination with his hair came from, was it because it made him look so handsome? or maybe the way it looked very cute whenever it flopped around when he moved?
confused feelings for the caramel haired boy aside, you decide to let it go.
you were hanging out with the man himself and a bunch of other friends one afternoon and started scrolling through your phone. they wouldn’t mind, seeing as to how all of them were currently preoccupied with playing a board game.
“hey, you can’t just do that! you have to give me money!”
“i can do whatever i want!”
you subconsciously block the noise coming from your rowdy friends, very much used to the chaotic nature. your thumb landed on a really adorable picture of your sweet little puppy back at home, already missing him. a thought instantly strikes you.
you look up from your phone. and then to seungmin. and then back to your phone.
it’s the exact same?!
you’ve finally cracked it. he looked exactly like your family dog. comparing him to an actual dog sounded mean, but you meant this genuinely as a compliment, you absolutely adored your golden retriever puppy- haru, more than your own family. the longer you thought about it, it’s sweet demeanor and honey colored coat resembled kim seungmin right in front of you.
after thinking about this revelation, you kept it to yourself, out of context it could sound mean. the last thing you wanted was to offend someone when you meant it in an endearing way.
so upon walking home one day, hurried footsteps trailed behind yours, prompting you to turn to see who it was. it was seungmin himself, his hair flopping in the wind, resembling the cutest pair of puppy ears.
he finally stopped, panting heavily after chasing you for a good while now. he straightened up, opening his adorable mouth to say something to you.
you couldn’t help yourself, the thought of wanting to feel his soft looking hair.
“haru-” you cover your mouth as soon as the words left it, extremely mortified to have said it out loud.
“haru? who’s that?” seungmin teases your increasingly flustered state. “are you mistaking me for someone else?” it was too late, you have to explain now.
“no...its...my…family’s dog…” you blurted out, embarrassed of saying it in front of him. you had fully expected him to get mad but he doesn’t. instead, seungmin lets out a chuckle, his eyes crinkling in what seems to be delight.
“well, my hair is really soft.” he watches your face morph into confusion as he tucks his hands coyly into his pockets. he wasn’t mad?
“do you want to touch? you've been staring at it all week.”
seungmin wasn’t known for being touchy with his friends or anyone for that matter so you can imagine the shock on your face when he leans down to your level, silently allowing you to do so.
placing a hesitant touch on his honey hued locks with one hand, you slowly bring your other to ruffle his head, really going at it and much like you would do to haru. a grin graces your features as his strands get messed up, absolutely elated that you now know what his hair feels like.
once you were done, he straightens up and pats his messy hair back in its place as best as he can. seungmin quietly wraps an arm around your shoulder, as if nothing happened.
“got it out of your system?” you nod gleefully.
“good, now i can ask you out for a date.”

skip to loafer chapter 61 analysis // spoilers
between monster and doctors, the ones who are fit to survive are the ones who are ready to bare their souls to the world — and sometimes, the one to do so it’s the one we expect the contrary.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
at first, when i started to think about this thread, i was about to say “we have a chapter with two extremes: one character who’s ready to speak his mind and the other who’s afraid to do so”. but, as fast as this thought came to mind, it also slipped away because…well..they are not that different from each other, are they?
ujjie is tired. tired of people who do nothing but bring other’s down for their own benefits — and tired of being on the other spectrum of things. after all, what gives the right to some to step on others but act with superiority as soon as they taste their own poison? after a long time of being rejected and having his opinions denied, ujiie starts to speak what is on his mind without worrying about any retaliation — after all, what could harm him when he is someone who has nothing in the eyes of others?
Tumblr media
having this power allows him to express himself more and fight for his place in the world, as well as serving as protection. this causes him to block himself from relating to other people who are not seen as equal in his eyes. if they didn't listen to him, why would he listen to them? why do they have this right and he doesn't? (and this becomes much more explicit when he has the argument with mitsumi, someone who is really the opposite of him and who tries to see everyone's heart before anything else.)
however, ujiie doesn't realize that he ended up falling into his own trap: what ends up slipping through his fingers is the opportunity to realize that other people also hide much more than he himself imagines.
then shima enters and the concept of appearance starts to suffer a shock. well, in a world divided between monsters and doctors, who knew a monster could have a soul after all? unlike what ujiie imagined, shima is much more like him than he thinks. after all, both were silenced several times and had their desires denied in different ways. while ujiie suffered from the hypocrisy of those around him, shima was forced to accept a desire that was not even his, but that of everyone else around him. both were created by a doctor, but in different laboratories.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and it's at this moment that the second monster has the chance to show its claws: shima is finally fighting for something he likes and for a role that he admires so much. this gives him the courage to feel like he does have the right to play whoever he wants, because he will do his best to make that possible.
shima is starting to change and come out of the glass dome he had previously been placed in. it is now becoming clearer to him where his desires stand in comparison to someone else's that were forced upon him. he is starting to fill up all the things that were stolen from him and is taking them one by one, with his own hands.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
of course, not all change comes with serenity: it is still very difficult for shima to understand who he is taking the reins from. even though he now understands that he needs to make his choices alone, the shadows of all those who helped him begin to creep in. "if i have the right to take what's mine back, who should i take it from? if taking back what's mine would mean hurting those who helped me, would i still have the right to do it?"
it's still very difficult for him to see himself in any position other than the fine line between doctor and monster. he can see parts of himself with his character and his battles, but he also finds himself carried away by the speech of others, making him see a little of the doctor, who denies the monster a free life, in himself. that’s why ujiie’s right in his opinion, but that doesn’t mean he will accept it that easily.
Tumblr media
compared to all the chapters focused on shima, this is a big leap towards conquering his identity. it's very beautiful to follow shima's growth and see him abandoning the silence that has always accompanied him. sensei chose to give him a chance to find his own voice in a very gentle way, without generating any other trauma that would put him back in a dark mindset. all of this could have taken another form and shima could very well have been forced to take risks that he had never before thought of taking — but that is not the way she chose to write this story; skip to loafer is written on the basis of love, and there is nothing more tender and painful than the struggle for self-love.
in the end, we had a chapter that wanted to show two very different characters but, in fact, ended up showing how the similarities are found in details that would most likely be ignored or overlooked due to the behavior or the way the characters were developed.
this is a technique that i really like in sensei's writing. it always tends to put into combat two characters who, on the surface, have no similarity at all just to then unravel them and make them connect in the end. i don't think this means that we will see a big change in the relationship between shima and ujiie (but i, personally, would love to see the two being friends or at least colleagues), after all habits are difficult to break, especially after just one event. but i believe this showed us readers new ways of reading them. now we have a more in-depth idea of ujiie and his interpersonal relationships and we have a new shima who prefers to face what eats at him instead of absorbing everything for himself.
i'm very glad sensei chose to write this chapter and not jump straight to the trip. we do need a little more ground to stand on before facing what comes next, because that will take a lot from shima and his new power and confidence he found. he would not be able to face mitsumi if he didn't face himself or people who don't believe in him first — he needs to find his own strength to fight this new battle.
Tumblr media
as always, thank you for reading 💛 hope you guys liked the thread and the chapter as well!! remember: if you can, please help sensei by buying the chapters or the volumes. also sorry for any mistakes. thank you thank you!!!!

the reason why everyone should read skip to loafer is because misaki takamatsu expertly articulates so much of the highschool girl experience in a way that feels deeply grounded, deeply nuanced and deeply relatable. i’ll keep specific examples out of this because one of my personal joys with reading skip to loafer is experiencing everything alongside mitsumi and friends but events like making friends with people you normally wouldn’t talk to, finding the balance between your social life and your academic goals, processing unrequited feelings and learning to love yourself. the social pressures that come with being a highly sought after person; feelings of envy towards said person and processing these feelings. these events are explored with a level of attention and warmth that is very difficult to find in other shoujo highschool manga.
this is definitely elevated by skip to loafer’s focus and exploration of its female characters, who have their own distinct goals, personalities and insecurities. i don’t think there’s many shoujo manga out there that treats its female friendships as similarly important if not MORE important than its romantic relationships. so much of highschool was just spending time with best friends. skip to loafer doesn’t have the same type of female-rival drama that most other shoujo romance works do, and when it does the efficient pacing of the story means it’s resolved fairly quickly yet satisfyingly. instead, mitsumi and her friends go to cafes, they eat lunch together, they go shopping, they team up in sports and culture festivals. everything that happens in skip to loafer feels very close to something that could happen to any regular highschooler, which makes the themes and ideas it explores more impactful and personal.
i rambled a lot but essentially you should 1000% read skip to loafer. there is nothing else i would more sincerely recommend than skip to loafer. love and warmth and friendship and the development of the self is stored in skip to loafer

skip and loafer episode 12
Skip and Loafer is one of my favorite mangas. It's a beautiful story about high schoolers growing up and their relationships with one another. I had been wanting to reread the manga for a while, but I realized I had never actually watched the anime! So, I finally decided to watch it, and I was blown away.
Tumblr media
Episode 12 was a perfect season finale, and the entire season blew me away. From the beginning, we watched as Mitsumi adjusted to life in the city by making new friends and joining the student council.
One of her best friendships is with Shima Sousuke, a popular, handsome boy. What I love about episode 12 is that we see Shima's character arc hit its climax. Throughout the show, he is a laid-back guy. However, his internal conflict has to do with his constant need to perform for validation.
While Mitsumi is sure of her future, Shima doesn't have a clue what he wants to do because he has always done what others have asked of him. Of all the people in his life, Mitsumi is one of the few who knows about Shima's child-acting phase. She's pretty perceptive when it comes to Shima. Even when many others can't tell Shima is having a difficult time, she can see through his facade.
Tumblr media
This scene may look silly initially, but it's Mitsumi's attempt at protecting Shima.
Ririka, Shima's childhood actress friend, went through a rough patch that she blames on Shima. Since Shima believes he is at fault, he is always at her beck and call despite feeling uncomfortable. At this point in the episode, Mitsumi realizes Ririka purposefully sent Shima's mom away. Despite Mitsumi having some moments where she can't read a room, in this instance, Mitsumi knows that ririka means trouble.
The only way Mitsumi can think of warding off Ririka is to strike a pose similar to that of an anteater. It's silly, but it's a testament to Mitsumi's character. She isn't afraid to look weird if it means she can help someone. Throughout the season, Mitsumi was always making little messes, such as throwing up during the assembly and getting called the "big boss" of the school. Despite these awkward moments, Mitsumi doesn't let this get her down; she gets back up and keeps moving forward.
Shima is aware of Mitsumi's resilience. Unlike himself, Mitsumi isn't afraid of messing up. Shima finds himself drawn to her. Out of all the people he's met, Mitsumi is the one that he finds himself reaching out to.
During the season finale, Shima has a monologue that is one of my favorite moments in the entire manga. It's a testament to his character and the foundation of his future development.
Tumblr media
Shima's constant need to perform has forced him to believe his OWN ideas and feelings don't matter
Since childhood, he has thought acting would be a way to make his mother happy. Although he hasn't worked since childhood, he has held onto that mentality his whole life. If he gives people what they want, they'll be happy, even if it costs Shima happiness.
Shima is tough on himself despite his "laidback" appearance. He believes his words and actions have no meaning and that he has no purpose if he isn't "performing" for someone else. He even calls Mitsumi and Kanechika "dazzling" and says that they're so far away from him. He doesn't see himself as someone who can fearlessly do what they want.
Although Shima clearly admires Mitsumi, it isn't until his big performance that he realizes what many of his feelings boil down to.
Tumblr media
"I know this feeling. It's envy."
During his performance, he engages in an inner dialogue that circles around the idea that Shima doesn't know himself. Did he want his mom there to watch him perform? Does he want to keep acting? Was he glad she didn't stay? Is his lack of confidence the reason he is uncomfortable around girls? "Does it mean I can act if it's for myself?"
At the end of the day, Shima does not know who he is or what he wants. Unlike Mitsumi and Kanechika, who go 100% into everything they do and are genuinely happy about their choices, Shima has no clue what he finds joy in.
"You'll never be one of them."
It's a simple quote, but this is what leads Shima to understand his jealousy. He has separated himself from those he finds resilient, and despite believing he has to put on an act to make others happy, Shima is envious of those who can live freely.
Yes, this way of living may have been "easy" for Shima and may have even made many people happy, but it doesn't work anymore. After meeting someone like Mitsumi, he sees someone who isn't afraid to "get her hands dirty." Even Kanechika, who has succeeded with his plays, wouldn't have been able to get to this point without doing a few awful projects.
To find success, you need to be willing to make a mess and fall a few times. Although finding success is significant and unique, the most important thing is finding what you love and doing all you can to achieve your dream. This is why Mitsumi and Kanechika are so resilient. They understand there will be troubles along the way, but no problem is too big if it means they can accomplish their goals.
Tumblr media
Shima takes a step forward to a new way of living by being vulnerable with Ririka.
Shima feels guilty about what happened with Ririka from the beginning, but we see him gather the courage to finally form a boundary. He isn't completely cutting himself off because he genuinely cares about her, but he tells her he can't keep following her down this destructive path.
I can not stress enough how important this moment is. He had spent so long doing what people expected of him because he believed it was the right choice. He was a people pleaser to a fault, but now he wants more for himself.
Tumblr media
"I enjoy this school."
This is one of the rare moments when Shima is honest about his feelings, especially when he loves something. He loves his school, he loves acting, and he loves his friends, and he isn’t going to keep being the same person who was once passive about everything.
This scene is just so impactful. Following his inner monologue, where he talks about doing what others want and being jealous, now he can unapologetically say what he feels. This entire sequence is just so perfect.
I may be incredibly biased since Shima is one of my favorite characters, but this episode was one of the best-written episodes I have seen. It was a perfect way to end the season, with Shima finally stepping forward to become his own person.
Of course, he'll have moments when he's clumsy, but the important thing is that Shima is ensuring that he has a chance to find himself.
Tumblr media
Towards the end of the episode, we get a cute moment between Shima and Mitsumi, which leaves her thinking, "But today, he seems almost like...a kid?"
I just love these last few moments of the episode. The little interaction between Shima and Mitsumi was too cute and such a nice touch to the season finale.
What I love the most about this scene is that Mitsumi notices that Shima has a more childlike air. It's almost like all that weight that was piling up throughout the season is finally gone, leaving Shima with the chance to spend his high school days comfortably.
Tumblr media
All in all, this episode was the perfect season finale! The writing, the voice acting, the animation—everything was just so well done. It truly brought the story to life.
--------------------------------------------------------------
There aren't enough words to describe how much I loved this episode, but I hope this post at least gave insight into why I love this series so much. Shima's growth is one of the best parts of this series, and this episode begins a new chapter in his life.
I love Shima and Mitsumi so much. Skip and Loafer is one of the best pieces of media I have ever read, and it will always have a strong impact on my life.

The Apothecary Diaries Episode 5: Covert Operations
Tumblr media
Sure, this might not be the most visually stunning series of the year, or the most engaging or whatever other metric you might measure by, but I think, much like today's episode of Spy x Family, it does something that a lot of people wouldn't truly appreciate until they understand it, and that would be blocking and layouts.
Yes, blocking. It's a weird thing to talk about in terms of an anime, but it can be incredibly important in the process of "building" a scene, and comes from the heart of the storyboards. I mean, just look at this scene from early on in the episode.
Tumblr media
What does it do so well? It makes sure that viewers understand that the space that exists within this series is three dimensional, and it accomplishes that very efficiently with character blocking. They're not orthographic or perfectly aligned with one direction or right in the center of the screen or anything like that. They're placed within the scene in a way that remains very intentional and purposeful, but without "catering" directly to the eyes of the viewer. It forces the viewer to understand the scene in a totally different context because of how things are placed and where.
Let me give another example with Maomao.
This one's incredibly simple but I think in the most deceptive way possible very good. The general idea that they're playing with is "balance" and is very important in scene composition.
Tumblr media
Allow me to explain. What we have in this is: the back wall, a desk with a lamp and some fabric on it, Maomao, and then a table in the front left corner of the scene.
And I think that table is the sneakiest part of the whole thing, because it's what really provides the depth and distance of Maomao in this sequence. Even better is that, much like the fabrics and large desk, it's cut off by the frame. I talked about this sort of thing to no end with Skip and Loafer, but to bring it to this episode in particular, cutting objects off, especially in a three dimensional space where they don't just extend in one direction past the frame, but in multiple, is such an incredibly good trick for providing depth and a sense of space to a layout.
Finally, to tie a neat bow on this one, how the placement of objects builds the frame. Maomao is not in the absolute center of the frame, both horizontally and vertically, and that offset requires effort from viewers to correct for. Similarly, placing objects at the edge of the frame forces viewers to become aware of the limitations on the lens that they are viewing the content through. It builds an impressive sense of scope that exists outside what is being shown and is a great trick to use to accentuate things like Maomao's character acting in the sequence.
Armed with that knowledge, the episode really shines in its effort to place character acting and interaction at the forefront while providing a far larger sense of space through its layouts that love juxtaposing proximity with distance. But also, just look at how impressively well the episode adheres to the rule of thirds.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think my favorite example of the expert blocking and layouts is how they use it to convey the differences between the four concubines and their ladies in waiting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's incredibly impressive in how they're able to convey so much from so little. The difference in the angles (both pitch and tilt), the spacing between the concubine and their ladies in waiting, the organization of the ladies in waiting, there's a world of information that appears with them that tells countless stories without saying a word.
That said, the best example of blocking with the concubines is Gyokuyou's later on in the episode, just look at this.
Tumblr media
Gyokuyou and Maoamo, the "main attractions", of this grouping comprise the middle of the scene, while the other ladies in waiting are off in the wings. What's so great about it though is the depth that is provided by the layout. None of the characters are sharing the same space in terms of depth, and it builds a really impressive scene where Gyokuyou comprises the front of the group as the "head" and Maomao brings up the rear as the last, but most important in the group. All the while, the main duo separate the pairs of ladies in waiting vertically. Just really incredible stuff that gives life and feeling to the composition of the scenes in the best possible way.
And then there's the stuff between Maomao and Jinshi. I just love how they intentionally preserve the height difference and are aware of that despite the two not sharing a scene often. And then the dark vs light in terms of composition and brightness? Really just expert work that makes for an incredibly satisfying scene in ways that you might not grasp right away.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's just a hell of a lot of effort in terms of direction and boarding to create an episode that is not just consistently aware of space, but puts focus on character acting and movement so efficiently. Really really great work on the episode as a whole.

9 episodes in and I’m still trying to articulate what exactly I love so much and find so fascinating about Skip and Loafer and I think it’s that... it sits in this interesting crossroads between lighthearted slice-of-life school story and teen drama. Like, it touches on some of the stresses of adolescence so pointedly and so well - self-esteem and body image, balancing ambition with burnout, trying to navigate social scenarios when your anxiety tells you that everyone will automatically dislike you so you should dislike them first, the terrors and joys of moving to a new city, whatever trauma Shima is clearly carrying around from his childhood (even a bit of transphobia in Nao-chan’s case, though obviously she’s not one of the teens)... but the tone is always so warm and so sincere that it never feels harrowing and heavy to watch these kids go through their emotional turmoil. There’s an undercurrent of melancholy to the show - again, especially where Shima is concerned - but first and foremost it always tackles its themes with such heart and provides such a positive outlook that you can’t help but come away feeling hopeful and happy and like everything is going to be okay. This is by no means a tone balance unique to SkipLoaf but it’s pulling it off in such a skillful way

For the manga ask: 1, 11 and 17
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
HIIII HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
AND ALSO THANKS FOR NOT ONLY SENDING ME A ASK BUT SENDING ME THIS TWICE SINCE I ACCIDENTALLY BLOWED UP THE FIRST TIME TEEHEE <3 <3 <3 odeio escrever coisa pelo celular augghh
Anyway I'm answering those questions here!!!
1. Your top 5 reads of 2023
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meme for symmetry lol
No Home - NO HOME MY BELOVED MY BESTIE NO HOME,HOW IT CAN BE SO WELL WRITTEN IT MAKES ME INSANE BRO... COMICS OF ALL TIME. I have no words to explain... I do want one day stop being a coward and write out some analysis on it, buuut--oh well~~
Dungeon Meshi - I got into the party almost "too late". Well, I don't really believe that starting something after if finished is getting into it too late, but I do get that you lose some experiences if you get into something late than other... And in my case I got into it some weeks before it officially ended lmao. Always heard about it and finally gave a try, it's extremely funny and charming, can't wait for the anime this week :]
Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun - I saw the anime back when it was releasing, enjoyed it and...that was it. Hoped for season two (kinda still wish for it),but yeah... Then finally said fuck it and OHH IT GETS SO MUCH BETTER. LIKE ITS NOT THAT THE ANIME IS BAD BY ANY MEANS BUT WELL...it only covered one part of it and it always keep getting funnier and funnier! Wakamatsu is so much more insane and dumb... The characters we never got to met there. I do have some issue here and there but in general I have a pretty fun time :]
Ikoku Nikki - yeah maybe sometimes see that something gonna end next week really pushes me to read it lol. Anyway I do want to re read again sometime soon, but it was a very emotional read!! Makio women of all time, a aro icon <3 she everything!!!!
After School Lessons for Unripe Apples - another fun read!!! Don't think I have too much thoughts but I really enjoy Mi-ae and Cheol dynamic <3
Just making clear that in this top 5 I put stuff I started reading in 2023,so like ... No Skip to Loafer here lol even thought I enjoyed the new chapters that were released in 2023,in the rules my head made it didn't count lmao.
11. Your favorite covers
Suddenly I actually never read anything in 2023 :) GJJSAJFN ok guess Hirayasumi covers are very neat!!! I love the painting of it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But yeah I noticied I remember chapter covers much more than I remember volume covers, so originally I was going to show some of my favorite chapter covers...but then 10 photos limit. Even thought I was sure nowdays is 30 idk if its because I'm stuck in mobile but whatever,I spend two hours looking covers on my phone I gonna show it on a rb or something lmao
17. A manga you didn’t expect to like
Hmnm ... I don't remember lmao. Like at least not anything that I felt that extremely "omg what pleasant surprise!!!!!" ? The best I could think of is kisses x kiss x kisses that ...well does have a cringe name that kinda put you expectations at low I guess lol
Tumblr media
It's nothing amazing, it's a finished romance comic, that is very sweet. I liked the contrast of the protagonist and his love interest being like, boy with big family all living together and boy that lives alone with parents in another country lol. It is a cliche and not gonna pretend they do anything groundbreaking with it, but it's still a nice storyline. Lowkey big spoilers ahead I guess but: I liked that while the protagonist dream of living completely alone changed a little (cause come on its a fluffy romance lol), he still got separates room cause he does want be able to experience and enjoy not sharing a room, having more privacy and stuff. It's kinda small overall, but it's nice that his dream and his goals didn't do a complete change because of love.
