ooh i think i'll go chronologically here

linkin park - i was like? 12 when meteora came out? it was a life changing record. that was the age i was truly starting to get into music and meteora was the first CD i picked out for myself that i became properly obsessed with. i had a burned copy of hybrid theory i got from one of my friends but though i loved it, nothing compared to the blissful angst of laying in bed listening to "somewhere i belong" on repeat

nevermore - this whole band but specifically the album dead heart in a dead world really were life-defining albums. they were my favorite band for many years. this band made me a metalhead. i grew up listening to them (my dad was always a big fan) but that never made them feel any less like a life changing discovery i made for myself. i used to listen to their music and read the lyric booklets with a pocket dictionary in my lap so i could look up the words i didn't understand. i got one of my cousins around my age really into them at the same time and that became this massive thing we bonded over for years. i feel like i owe every good thing in my life that came out of my relationship to metal to this band specifically. hugely, hugely important.

american football - the next biggest band to mark a massive change in my life and my music taste was probably these guys. they were my jumping off point into emo, which marked a major expansion of my music taste and interests after a solid few yeas of just being a metal guy. THE record would be the self titled, of course. nothing since they've reformed has hit quite as well. there are other emo bands that had a huge impact on me, but the fact is i wouldn't have gotten into braid or rainer maria or whoever else if amfootball hadn't opened that door for me first, so they're the band that gets to go on this list.

amanda palmer/dresden dolls - trust me i'm well aware of the problems associated with these guys but it doesn't change the fact that they were, at a time when i really needed a reason to live, artists with a life-saving impact on me. if that's a hyperbolic statement, then it's only barely so. i was truly obsessed. went to every show i could. went to coachella for the AFP set, met amanda after, teared up telling her how much her music meant to me when i was struggling with the aftermath of coming out to my family and her kindness to me in that interaction helped motivate me to come out on the drive home to the person i went to the festival with. sometimes the right band at the right time in your life can really be a life preserver. despite everything else, i'll always feel grateful for that. so glad i didn't get the tattoo i was contemplating at one time, though

screaming females - in terms of impact i couldn't write this list without including this band. literally, tangibly changed my life to be a fan of theirs. back in 2015 i posted some fanfic for this video game i liked, got a nice message from someone complimenting my work, clicked through to their blog and immediately see a photoset of marissa paternoster playing a bloody guitar and immediately messaged them back to talk about music and life is strange. we had an immediate, profound, and powerful connection. 8 years on @holdsteady is STILL my best friend. i wrote a story with her. we've been to shows together. we ate street hot dogs together. i taught her to make potato wedges. she introduced me to some of my favorite bands. i made chili for her dad. i lived in her basement for a month. i literally don't know what kind of person i would be or what my life would look like if we never met. and we owe it all to the fact that we both fuckin love tiny lesbians that shred on guitar.

Some spoilers for Season 3 and High Speed!! 2

After Rin moved to Australia in sixth grade, Haru and Makoto moved on to middle school. Haru was disenchanted with swimming the relay again because their group had been broken up, but over the course of the book, he gets his competitive spirit back and forms a new relay team with Makoto (backstroke), Ikuya (breaststroke), and Asahi (butterfly). 

However, shortly after their relay competition in the summer, winter comes as you know from the original Season 1, where Rin returns from Australia for winter break dejected and disillusioned. Haru realizes his swimming hurts others (this happens several times before too [including with Ikuya and Asahi], so Rin is the ‘straw that broke the camel’s back’ essentially that sends Haru spiralling), so he quits the swim team.

Haru’s abrupt abandonment of their newly formed relay team hits Ikuya especially hard, but through Season 3 of the anime, he comes back to the fold.

In ‘High Speed 2′, the novel where all of this takes place, we learn from Kirishima Natsuya (Ikuya’s older brother and captain of the swim team) that Ikuya has made a promise with his brother as well as another childhood friend that they will all become Olympians together, so Ikuya was set up to go Olympic years ago. Since he swims breaststroke, many in the fandom long suspected that he would be the Breaststroker on Haru and Rin’s relay team--and it looks like that’s about to happen!

However, they still need someone to swim backstroke. Natsuya seems to be kind of an all-rounder (though I *think* we only really see him swimming freestyle? My memory is fuzzy), and since he has Olympic aspirations and has been training hard, he’s a strong contender. His boyfriendbest friend Nao was an accomplished backstroke swimmer, but he’s had health issues since middle school, and I think now he’s mostly in an athletic managerial position, so probably not Nao.

The movie will probably spend half the time focusing on them rounding out their relay team/becoming a real team together and half the time on the actual Olympics races (because there’ll almost definitely be individual races too! Will we see Haru and Rin competing alongside one another in side-by-side lanes?? IF GOD LOVES ME, WE WILL).

Well Usami would be the biggest thot by design if not function if he’s by Edogai- 

ihvfuovfhj in all seriousness, Edogai… is an interesting case. Because on the one hand, I have no fucking clue what to feel about him. Am I terrified? Disgusted? Protective? Respectful? Fuck man I don’t even know

Favorite Thing: His passion for his craft is something wonderful to behold. Like, if you just look Beyond the fact that its Human Skin Robbed From Corpses being made into clothes, if you just mentally replace it with fabric or focus on his taxidermy, the care and dedication he has to what he does is incredible. Not only is he precise in his methods, but he has obvious skill in what he does that speaks volumes about how much he’s honed it. And honestly, I’d even take it one step further- even with the skin clothes, the fact that he’s so willing to experiment with different designs and forms for his hobby shows a massively creative, adventurous spirit. In a lot of ways, I love that Edogai is a character that an artist like myself can see some like qualities in- though of course, my art is the simple act of writing, and not. Skin. I also just think that his personality is a lot of fun, when paired with other characters, and love how sweet he can be!

Least Favorite Thing: That he died so early, tbh. As much as I’m wishy washy over like. How I feel about him personally. There’s no denying that Edogai himself had a massive amount of potential as an antagonist, and with some character development, might have one day surpassed the likes of Tsurumi and Kiroranke. Or if not become an antagonist, becoming an unlikely ally along with Ienaga would have been fun as well. That being said, his personality was kind of annoying in big, big doses… 

Favorite Line: To be honest, nothing really stands out to me as much as Edogai being like “Well how about YOU let me skin you and tattoo that, huh Tsukishima?!” when Tsukishima is trying to be motivational. It was both pretty fuckin’ funny and gave me an inkling of a sadistic idea that will now forever be woven into future aus I get in contact with- when will the point come when Edogai decides to take matters into his own hands and get fresh skin for himself?

brOTP: Outside the confines of canon, where he presumably lives? Edogai and Ienaga, all the goddamn way. Think about it- Ienaga likely has nice skin already, so she doesn’t really need to eat much of it. And I mean, Ienaga would probably be absolutely charmed by all of Edogai’s creations, what with being kind of a freak herself, so she’d likely hand the skin of her victims off to him. Thesis statement: let Edogai have a cannibal granny who shows him the true meaning of family. Also I guess Tsukishima and Edogai would be a good brOTP, in the confines of canon

OTP: EdoSami. I know they haven’t interacted in canon, but listen dude. I’m a goddamn Sucker for that photoset where the guy is holding a rose and trying to decide which of two girls to get with, so the girls just take the rose and go out with each other. That’s EdoSami, except the rose is a freshly severed hand and the guy is Tsurumi. Some other runners up include EdoKaidou, EdoTsuki, and EdoKoi- basically, I ship him with anyone in the 7th Except Tsurumi

nOTP: TsuruGai. 

Random Headcanon: Edogai became interested in working with human bodies after his father was killed. After his father’s body was sent to the mortician, Edogai followed, grieving over the corpse. The mortician, taking pity on the youth and knowing his hobby, offers to give him a space to “do what he has to do”. Edogai didn’t understand what he meant, at first. But the mortician and the mortician’s wife let him stay with them for a few days, and the mortician showed him how to work on human corpses, pulling up the intestines with vigor and keeping the faces covered until Edogai was ready. The mortician’s wife advised him in proper sterilization and embalming. 

He soon came to understand that they were willing to let him stuff his father like one of his taxidermies and, at first repulsed but wanting desperately to have some remnant of his only confidant and friend, he does it.

Despite Edogai’s hobby being grisly and highly disrespectful, I can… understand how it might have started. I think Edogai’s hobby evolved and mutated from a very sane place. In some respects, this comes from my own experience visitng a cadaver lab when I was 17 as well as the simple fact of human nature: to some people, the macabre and uncanny is fascinating, rather than frightening. For myself and my interest in psychology, seeing a human corpse like that, highly dissected to the point where it was easy for me to lift the intestines or poke around the ribcage to feel the heart, it put into perspective how strange and precious consciousness is, that the brain full of holes that I held in my hands once belonged to a mind and body. For Edogai, perhaps his fascination began there as well- understanding that the skin he used belonged to a person. Someone who was using it, who filled it with scars and callouses. 

Edogai is terrifying not just because of what he does with skin- but because what he does with skin is the result of something deeply disturbed. A morbid fascination, twisted in the wrong way, egged on by years of abuse and isolation. And in surrounding himself with mounts and skins and bodies, cutting himself off from others, he began to become more terrifying, perhaps not even remembering that all the graves he robbed- all the skins he took- used to belong to humans. Living, breathing, humans. With lives. With loves. With families and dreams. And in that dehumanization of the dead, his descent into madness began.

eewww, many years ago I was travelling though Indonesia and I stopped at a road side market to buy some food and they pushed a piece of Durian on me to taste. Tagging @mags-duranb, who asked (thank you for the interest btw, it was super sweet. Also, I love your art <3333) :)  I was gonna make a post anyway, but I wanted it to be a timeline photoset hence why I’m not replying directly.

I thought it was about time I gave you guys a nice long update on the purrito, since we have now officially reached 2 months of age as of yesterday!

To answer the requester’s question, SHE is doing just fine xD  That’s right, when we visited the vet about a week ago for the second round of shots, we got visible proof (or rather lack thereof) that we have a little girl in our hands.  This was only a couple of days before I made an insta post announcing the official name, because of course it was. Way to embarass me, kiddo.

So I’d like to introduce you all to Buffy, because hello, so dang pretty, look at that last pic that was taken only yesterday, and she’s also pretty fearless and resourceful, though not necessarily highly intelligent xD  Not a vampire slayer, but an ankle slayer for sure.  I generally post updates on her every couple of days on instagram.

Oh, and, just as a final note on the whole name thing, yes, we still call her purrito from time to time, as well as a thousand other nicknames ;) 

So! On to the update (and an extra... suprise?¿¿??) below the cut:

Buffy’s issues with food have gotten a lot better.  She used to be vicious about meals, meowing and pleading hours before her feeding time.  At first we thought we were perhaps feeding her too little, so we followed the general advice everyone gives re: how much to feed kittens, which is to say we just let her eat her fill.  She did not stop until her belly was so distended I had to physically drag her bowl away.  So we decided to slowly increase her intake whenever we saw she started to get skinny.  Which, given her Longcat status, was so. damn. OFTEN.  Seriously, if she looks malnourished in some pics, I assure you she’s not.  She just grows and grows like a damn weed.

Lately, however, since her weight has reached a healthy plateau, she’s gotten much better about food.  No screaming, no scratching, and she doesn’t really complain before feeding time anymore.  She still follows us whenever we dare visit the kitchen, but hey, it could be worse xD

Something I’ve never mentioned here is that when we first found her, her whiskers were very short and stubby, which we originally attributed to her being very young.  But eventually, we noticed that not only were her brow whiskers much longer, there was a lone whisker next to the stubby ones that was regular-sized, and the shorter ones looked almost... manually cut, if that wakes sense.  A bit of research led us to find out that sometimes, littermates may do this to a runt (bite them off) when they’re competing for mom’s milk, which... not only makes my heart ache for our little buddy, it starts to put her whole attitude toward food into perspective.

Long story short, we were prepared for the possibility that she may forever have issues with food, but she’s been improving constantly.

Other than the food issue, Buffy has grown into a happy, healthy kitty :) She’s up to date on her shots, and we took her to the vet only last week where we got nothing but good news.  

She’s very attached to us, especially me since I work from home and basically see her all day, and though she doesn’t complain and yowl when she’s left alone, she is super cuddly when we return home.  

Given her age, she’s incredibly playful to the point that we get more exhausted playing with her than she does xD She likes climbing all over the place and exploring everything within reach, always looking for new ‘lairs’ and stuffing her butt into every nook and cranny, she loves to chew on cables (which has led us to do some highly creative concealing) and often engages in what we call ‘Crab Dancing’ when she gets excited/territorial during playtime:

We were glad to see she takes to new (human) acquaintances very well, and she hasn’t (yet) started wreaking havoc in our apartment.  She, has, however,  gotten very bitey during playtime, and it’s ALWAYS playtime, so we’re trying to encourage her to bite on toys instead of our fingers: it’s a sloooooooooow process.  There’s also the possibility that she’s teething a bit early so she’s just constantly looking for relief.  We’ve bought her a few special chew toys that should arrive shortly, and hopefully they’ll help.  Even if it’s still early for her, hey, new toys, amirite? xD

Still, she never lashes out to us in anger/anxiety, not even when we gave her a bath where she was visibly distressed (yes, I know it’s not necessary for cats, but we’d never cleaned her with anything but pet wipes since we rescued her; she needed at least one) and yet she never tried to scratch or bite us.  TL;DR she’s mischievous, but not aggressive outside of playtime.

She’s super long for her age and will most likely be a pretty long kitty when she reaches maturity.  Seriously, y’all, Longcat 2.0:

I’m still bummed my theory that she was part Van doesn’t seem to be true (in my defense, she has something very similar to the characteristic Van spot on her nape!), but hey, less shedding xD She also has a permanent bald spot on her spine now (as we knew she would), where the vet had given her that shot that saved her life back when she got sick.

She’s a sweet little doofus, who thinks she’s really a parrot and likes to perch on our shoulder, and meows the whole time I’m in the kitchen because how dare someone in this household eat when she’s not eating too, and when I ignore her grey-green supplicating eyes she just curls up over my foot while I wash the dishes, and she constantly gets tangled up in our legs and waits for us behind closed doors, and she’s a friggin’ Duracell battery who does.not.tire, and she  tosses half the litter out when she digs, and she loves to take naps with us cuddled right over our chests so our heartbeat can lull her to sleep, and we love her.

The above was the post I had prepared and was going to post yesterday on Buffy’s 2 month ‘birthday,’ so I’ve left it intact.  However, I would be remiss if I didn’t add this latest development:

For a while now, we’ve been discussing how to deal with Buffy’s inexhaustible energy levels, because we do have other responsibilities, all of whom also require a good night’s sleep, which as you may imagine, has been a bit rare lately.  There’s this saying that the only one who can keep up with a kitten is another kitten, but we were very reluctant to adopt another one, since we’re currently dealing with an imminent move and we weren’t sure if we could even afford it.

Well...................

I found and rescued Buffy.  My partner found and rescued this little guy yesterday:

Five things here:

2) MY PARTNER DIDN’T EVEN FIND HIM IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD HE WAS VISITING HIS MOM ASJKFDHLSADGHFDDFAS

3) WE SERIOUSLY DON’T KNOW IF WE’RE KEEPING HIM.  SERIOUSLY.L

I’m going to be even more reluctant to make any grand claims than I was when we found Buffy, because this little dude (this one is a dude, indeed) is in pretty bad shape.  Though she’d been abandoned, Buffy was very clean and hale when we found her, even if she was a bit small and underfed.  

This one though... poor little soot sprite is all skin and bones, he was flea-ridden until we took him to the vet, he’s filthy, he’s terrified and has a bum leg from some sort of accident.  We didn’t even have a plan yesterday when my partner found him, but we figured since we had a lot of leftover milk powder and kitten pate from Buffy, we might as well feed up this little orphan. 

It took some coaxing with a syringe, but he got a bit of milk down which got his appetite going and we were able to feed him some pate.  He actually ate a fair bit, which is encouraging.  We know for a fact he was abandoned by his mom, btw, she’s still roaming around the neighborhood but refusing to tend to him since he’s already older than 4 weeks (maybe 1,5 month old max).  Just two weeks younger than Buffy.  After he got some food down, we took him to our vet, who was reserved but cautiously optimistic even for the leg.  He made us no promises, of course, and he advised we prepare ourselves for the possibility that he might not make it.

We’ve now had him for just under a day and he’s been improving.  He was very scared at first, hissy when I went near him, and the first time I fed him at home, the new environment had stressed him out to the point that I had to use a syringe again to get him to eat.  And yeah, we’ve had to keep him isolated ofc to protect Buffy (and him, omg, she’s literally twice his size in weight, no exaggeration, and most likely a social dunce with other kittes, she would destroy him).  I’ll be able to give him a bath tomorrow afternoon after the 48hr clock on the flea medicine runs out, which is yet another reason we had to isolate him.  Today, he’s been getting less and less reserved around me and he hasn’t needed to be force fed once, he’s been downing pate like no-one’s business.  I weighed him earlier and found he’d gained about 40-50 grams, a number I offer cautiously as both weighings at the vet and today aren’t entirely accurate, because squirmy kitty.  Still, he’s gained weight, even if only a little.   

Buffy can tell something’s up, since we basically had to move her litterbox and feeding area and haven’t let her in that room since.  It’s been... an adjustment xD But she bounces back admirably fast, she didn’t even bat an eyelash at the change; she’s just curious to discover what we’re hiding from her, obviously.  She’s probably heard him meowing, too.

We honestly have no clue what we’ll do with him.  Taking it one day at a time.  He might not make it at all, and even if he does, he may never get along with Buffy, in which case we’ll have to give him away for both their sakes.  I’m not gonna lie, money is a concern.  Research tells me at their age and beyond the cost isn’t prohibiting, not even double that of a single cat.  So if he doesn’t require any costly meds, we can afford him, especially since Buffy can now eat dry food (and so will he in a couple of weeks).  This, again, is all hinging on a) him not having any serious, contagious illnesses, and b) him and Buffy getting along.  In the long run, we know it would be way better for Buffy to have a companion to play and cuddle with, but we have to be realistic and prepare for the worst for now.

Soot sprite is a little cutie, he has the softest, most plaintive meow and there’s even hope for his little leg down the road (though honestly, that’s the last thing that concerns us; even in his current state, he’s perfectly mobile).  His eyes, too, should get better with time if he grows healthier. 

SO WE’LL SEE.  RN I am beyond stressed and reserved, but also kinda hopeful. *sigh*

this is actually a skit the theater troupe i’m part of is putting on for incoming 9th graders on how to deal with high school drama

(side-note: i call this teen drama but the funny thing is that at least 2 out of 3 in this scene are like. legally not teens. like i don’t remember ever knowing how old amia is (either now or was in fall 2015) but i gave noés age as 16 in fall 2015 and at this point in realtime he’s 18. prax’s age was given as 18 at the start. and whats funnier is that for like EVERYONE IN THE CLASS whose age was given at all it’s like that. everyone who had a given age was between 16 and 18 at what was presumably the start of their freshman years of high school. this is why we don’t judge jasmyn for thinking joelle and asha were high school students)

fun fact: in my mental plans for this episode she was gonna run into the bathroom acting like a hero to “examine” the scene. she was gonna claim to have invented this glove that when in contact with certain toxins would change in some way that most people wouldn’t notice but she could because she’s the shsl toxicologist (or maybe she’d just then be able to take it for brief further testing--either way, she can find the results while others can’t because that’s her talent) to indicate what must have killed someone, and she’d use it by... putting it on and shoving her hand into the toilet bowl

of course, the glove would’ve just been a normal heavy duty rubber glove (similar to how in the actual episode here, we know gretta didn’t really figure out the cause of death just by looking)
