For the ship asks — nicknames and who tops ;) ❤️💚
I have been awake a total of ten minutes and just checked my laptop and this popped up! I was like okay cool something to do once I have had my meds, put my contacts in and, most importantly, I'm awake, but noooooooooo, it's biting at the inside of my brain to come out! So!
Nicknames?
Keith had no idea that petnames would come so naturally to him. They had only been together for a day when he suddenly started calling her Katie, and from there his Katie-Kat. In time it evolved again to Kit-Kat, then finally to Kitten. Pidge laps it up, purring and pretending to headbutt him affectionately when they're snuggling which inevitably leads to him tickling her under the chin, which makes her shrink her neck down and giggle endlessly, which he finds adorable. He will call her babe casually, which gets some strange looks in garrison meetings, and normally Lance pretends to stick his fingers down his throat at how lovey-dovey they are.
Pidge on the other hand, struggles with it. She doesn't like all the what she calls old-fashioned traditional nicknames, they just don't suit him. So instead she starts calling him hers. 'My emo, my Keith, my paladin. And Keith LOVES IT! He has never felt he belonged to someone before but here she was claiming him as her own at every opportunity! It pleased him on so many levels he doesn't even mind when one time she has her fingers tangled in his hair, kissing him softly and calling him 'my mullet'. Honestly, she had expected a reaction, it just wasn't for him to throw her down on the couch and ravish her! She tucked that piece of information away for more private time!
Who tops?
Keith always figured, if and when he got into a relationship, that he would be the top. He likes things his way, he likes to protect what's his, but then Pidge blasted into his life. From the start of their relationship, he knew she wasn't someone who needed saving or protecting other than to sate his own ego, so when she asked him if he had ever considered being tied up during sex, he shouldn't have been surprised that she meant him, not her, being left vulnerable. But wow, what a vulnerability it was! Being at her mercy gave him a raging boner before they even started, and Pidge delighted in the fact that her idea did that to him. She spent a long time teasing him, taking him to the edge of pleasure before drawing back again. Keith had no idea that frustration was something that would get him off so much, but here he was. And he'd do it again. And again.
That being said, that doesn't mean he can't take charge when he wants to, and he really likes to ravish her at the most inappropriate times. He likes making her stay quiet while he takes her at her desk, in the lab (only on approved surfaces that won't taint her work of course!), anywhere they could be heard. He definitely hasn't got her off while she's on a work call, not once...more like a dozen times. Everyone wonders why Pidge prefers not to take video calls, and it's because this horny bastard revels in trying new ways to make her break her work face and serious tone. He knows he's got to her when she says she'll have to call them back, and there was that one occasion where she didn't hang up on Matt properly and he wouldn't meet either of their eyes for over a week. The poor boy was scarred for life, having hung up at the first moan he never wanted to know his little sister was capable of.
And these two are not shy about experimenting with toys. Hell, experimenting should be Pidge's middle name at this point. She researches the hell out of it when they decide to try something new, reporting back to Keith like it's the most serious mission she has ever pulled a slideshow together for. Once they hit the order button, always together, there's some sloppy, rushed sex, simply because neither one can wait for the new "appliance" to arrive, whispering to one another what they will do once it's delivered.
As for Pidge, while she sometimes likes to take her time and tease Keith into an absolute frenzy, sometimes she just wants Keith to take control. He can always tell when she's in that kind of a mood because her kisses will be less forceful, she'll kiss her way across his jaw and whisper; 'please' in his ear, and then he knows. She needs him to take charge, to tease her slowly until she's almost crying with need, and only then will he flip her over and ram himself home inside her so she cries out. He demands she touch herself while he stables himself with his hands on her hips, the slapping sound of their bodies meeting at speed joining her desperate cries for release.
Bonus:
Zero. G. Sex. They've tried it. They've mastered it. And they learnt they have to work together!
Phew! I hope that was what you had in mind, because that damn well ran away with my imagination, married it in an illicit ceremony, then took it on a sexcapde honeymoon!
Send me a ship meme from this list!

Once Bitten, Twice Stupid prt 212 prt 1
212
Matt and Rieva returned in the morning. Seeing Lance hadn’t come down with a fever, or bled during the night, Keith let his fiancé sleep. The vampire had been up a couple of times in the morning to use the bathroom, collapsing back into bed as if he’d been sleep walking each time. Rieva was of the opinion Lance should rest, Matt backing up with his fiancé said, both of them leaving within the hour of arriving back home to go to work.
Flicking the TV on for company, Keith woke Lance up with the noise. Shuffling into the room, his fiancé climbed onto the sofa next to him, an arm snaking around Keith’s waist for comfort. He got a very sleepy “I love you”, before Lance fell back to sleep again him. His scent was still off. It was still off and it still filled Keith with nervous energy. Managing half an hour sleep, Lance woke up, mumbling about needing the bathroom. His lover barely gone a few moments before he was back, gripping the doorframe with one hand, and his stomach with the other
“K-Keith... I think there’s something wrong with me”
Jumping over the side of the sofa, Keith caught Lance as his knees gave out. The crotch of Lance’s underwear wet and bloodied. Fuck. Fuck... no. This couldn’t be happening, fluid spilling down the inside of Lance’s shaking legs
“Lance!”
“Nnngh... I dun feel good... I think the twins are coming”
Lifting Lance off his feet, Keith carried his fiancé over to the sofa. Squatting down between Lance’s knees, Keith was far far into panic mode
“Are you sure?”
“Mhmm... it... hurts...”
“Okay. Okay, let me get the keys and we’ll head to Platt. You’re going to be okay. You’re going to be okay, baby. Just hang on for me”
Grabbing his phone up, Keith called Coran, yelling at him to be prepared because Lance was in labour. Finding Lance’s car keys up, he rushed out to the bronco, climbing in before realising he’d left Lance sitting in the living room. He didn’t know what the plan was. Why didn’t they have a birth plan?! Rieva said they needed a birth plan. So why hadn’t they made a birth plan!? Looking to assure Lance it would be okay, that was when he realised he’d forgotten the main component of this nonexistent plan.
Running back into the house, Lance was now sobbing on the sofa, both hands on his stomach, clearly in pain. False contractions had been bad enough, Keith sympathised over the amount of pain Lance must be in. Placing his hand on his mate’s arm, Lance was freezing, that couldn’t be a good sign. He was wearing a hoodie. Why was he wearing a hoodie? Lance should be wearing the hoodie...
“You’re going to be okay, babe. You’re going to be okay. We’ll get to you Platt”
Lance shook his head, crying harder as he did
“I don’t want to go... don’t make me go”
“Coran’s going to deliver our twins, you’ll be okay”
Snatching up the blanket Lance had come shuffling in with, Keith tried to wrap it around Lance’s shoulders, Lance slapping his hand away
“I don’t want him to take our babies away!”
His ego took that as fact, rather than fear. Anger prickling at the idea of their children being stolen away. Shit. Now was not the time. What was he forgetting?! Lance’s go bag. No. No. That was still in the back of the bronco
“That’s not going to happen”
“Please... please don’t let them take them away from me”
“They won’t. They won’t take them away. Can you stand?”
Lance whimpered at him, drawing back on the sofa. He didn’t want to leave his home. They’d come too damn far to lose the twins now.
Forcing Lance up to stand, between his legs was wet with red tinged fluid. The pain leaving Lance hunched. Lifting him off his feet, Keith rushed from the living room, fighting his own ego that screamed at him as he forced himself out the front door. Fuck. Fuck. This was not the plan. This was the plan, but Lance wasn’t okay so this wasn’t the plan. Shit. He needed to call Shiro... and Krolia... and the others... fuck... Clutching his shirt, Lance gazed up at him with glassy eyes
“I don’t want to lose the twins”
“You’re not about to. You’ll be okay, baby. You’ll be okay”
Getting Lance into the bronco, Keith skipped the seatbelt, covering Lance with the blanket before leaning over to crank the heating knob to full heat. Slamming the door closed, he rounded the bronco, climbing in beside Lance, who whined softly for him
“I’m here, baby. I’m here. It’ll be okay”
Shifting closer to him, Lance buried his face against Keith’s shoulder
“I don’t feel very good... it hurts”
“I know, sweetheart. You hold on for me...”
“I love you... I dun wanna leave you...”
“You’re not going to. You’re not going anywhere”
Kicking gravel as he pulled a U-turn in Lance’s drive, Keith’s heart wouldn’t stop hammering. Labour seemed so sudden. Lance hadn’t said anything about his water breaking. Wasn’t that a thing? In the movies it was a sudden gush... Where was the sudden gush? He might have no idea about this, but these things were supposed to happen in order! Lance was supposed to come tell him his waters had broken, then he’d soothe him, and they’d go to Platt, where Coran would be waiting happily to deliver their twins. This was not how it went!
Speeding through Garrison, Keith took a few turns wide as he tried to reach his phone to call his brother. The device sliding along the dash and deciding to stay on the opposite end. The last thing he needed was the red and blue flashing lights in the rear view mirror that were accompanied by a burst of siren just after Balmera. Shit. Lance was in labour. He was on edge. He didn’t need this shit right now. He could make a run for it... but the cops would follow... he really didn’t need a high speed chase. Fuck. Fuck... fuck. Slowing the bronco, the stop was less than gentle as he pulled onto the gravel shoulder, jolting Lance. Moaning at the sudden stop, Lance blinked at him, trying to focus
“Ke-Keith?”
“It’s okay, baby. It’s okay”
Watching the officer climb out of the patrol car, Keith nearly gunned the engine. He could put a fair bit of distance between them and police if he left right now... but Lance would be mad if he did that. His lover’s hand finding his and gripping hard as let out a long groan
“You’re okay. You’re okay... fuck...”
Squeezing his hand, Keith felt something break. For being so weak, his fiancé’s strength was there when they didn’t need it. Lance had a death grip on his hand, Keith not sure it’d ever not have his impression printed on it forever.
“Sir, are you aware of how recklessly you were driving?”
Keith had rolled the window down as the officer got closer. He could do this. Nothing was wrong... just his fiancé in labour... nothing to see here
“I...”
“I trust you have some good reason for how fast you were going”
Lance let out a cry, the police officer looking alarmed
“Sir, is there something wrong with your passenger there?!”
“K-Keith...?”
The less Lance had to do with the police officer, the better
“It’s my fiancé. They’re in labour. There’s been so many complications with the pregnancy...”
“Sir, I’m afraid I’m going to have to ask you to step out of the car”
No. Nope. On the other side of the car, the man’s college opened the passenger side door. Keith’s heart beat so loud it was echoing in his head. Lifting the blanket, the officer drew back, talking past the pair of them
“We need an ambulance. There’s blood”
Keith snarled, sorely sorry for having dropped
“We don’t need an ambulance. You need to let me get him to his doctor!”
“Sir, if you’re going to continue to be aggressive...”
Nope. They weren’t taking him and they weren’t waiting for ambulance to come all the way from Platt when he could get Lance to VOLTRON faster and safer for everyone involved
“Oh, fuck this. I’m sorry”
Turning on the engine, the officer at his door tried to stick his arm inside to open the driver door from the inside. Keith tearing his hand off the handle and shoving him back so hard the man fell on his arse. Sticking his head out the window, Keith threw a blanket apology in the man’s direction
“I’m sorry, but you have no idea what’s happening and I like him better than I like the pair of you”
Shit. Fuck. He’d gone and done it now. He heard the police fussing as he pulled off the gravel shoulder, hopefully Coran would deal with the fall out. The Garrison police kind of too shocked to get their shit together in a hurry...
“Babe?”
“It’s okay. I didn’t hurt him...”
“You like me more than them...”
Swerving the bronco, the still open passenger door swung closed as he’d hoped it would
“I do, baby. I love you”
“I dun feel good... it hurts and I’m tired. You said your were worry”
Keith groaned at himself. He made a terrible criminal
“I know. You’ve got stay awake for me. You can do that for me”
“Wanna... push... ‘m scared”
“No! No pushing. You’re okay, it’s not that far”
“Bud my body says...”
All colour left Keith’s face. Nope. No. He didn’t know how to deliver a baby. Plus... Lance wasn’t equipped for things to be coming out of there... that’d hurt...
“You have to keep those legs of yours closed a little longer...”
“I dun know... they’re coming too soon... nigh...”
Squeezing Lance’s hand with his busted hand, there was no pushing happening in the bronco, Lance’s groan was too long not be him struggling
“Don’t you dare push!”
“I...”
“Our babies are going to be born at VOLTRON. Remember the drugs? Think of the drugs...”
Lance nodded sluggishly
“I wan’ the drugs”
“See. You can’t push without the drugs...”
Lance went silent for a long moment, Keith taking his eyes off the road to look at him. Blood trickled from Lance’s mouth
“Babe? Babe, talk to me”
Covering his mouth, Lance coughed wetly, the vampire lowering his hand to show a gloop of blood in his palm. Fucking fuck fuck
“You’re okay. We’re nearly there...”
“I... love you...”
“I love you too, baby...”
The cops caught up with them just outside Platt, Keith had given up on all road rules by then. Entirely selfish and reckless, though he had made sure not cause any accident. Parking in front of VOLTRON, the cops were maybe 10 seconds behind him. Flying out the car, he ran around the front of the bronco, throwing open the passenger door to pull Lance out. The officers had to be confused as hell as to why he’d brought Lance to a twenty-four hour bookstore. Moaning in his arms, his fiancé still felt icy to the touch, Coran opening the bookstore door for him as he carried his precious fiancé inside
“Coran, something’s wrong with him...”
Striding towards the elevator, Coran kept up with him, casting a glance at the officers that’d followed him inside. Mashing the button, the doors opened, closing behind them as the lady behind the store counter moved to talk to the police. They were her problem now
“Keith? Are they with you?”
“I kind of drove off and upset them...”
“Ah. Well... we’ll deal with that later. I’ve got a bed prepared for him...”
Lance moaned in his arms
“Wanna push...”
“I know, my boy. I know, you’re being very brave”
“Hurds”
Coran placed his hand on Lance’s forehead, Keith not stupid as he knew Coran had to be manipulating Lance’s quintessence or something
“I’m sure it does... How long has he been in labour?”
“I’m not sure... He was up and down a bit this morning and very lethargic, then he went to use the bathroom and came back saying he thought something was wrong. Something has to be wrong, he wants to push already”
“Not necessarily. His body is a tad peculiar. It maybe be a survival trait of breeder vampires. A long labour would put them in danger of capture or death... Or he’s simply interpreting the messages his brain is sending out in the wrong way”
Keith had clearly heard what Lance said and Lance clearly knew what he was feeling better than him and Coran
“No offence, Coran, but I’m second away from attacking you for being this close. I don’t want to hear “maybes””
“Right. Here we go, straight through and onto the bed if you please”
Lance clung to him as Keith laid him down on the waiting hospital gurney. Curled around his stomach, his fiancé looked so broken Keith found himself crying as kissed his forehead
“Don’t leave me”
As if he would. His ego was now going wild at the amount of people around his mate
“I’m not. I’m right here with you, baby. I’m here”
“I’m scared”
“I know... I know, but we’re going to meet our twins soon”
Looking up to Coran, Coran nodded
“Number two is absolutely right, my boy. Let’s take him straight through”
Coran was taking no chances it seemed. The amount of blood obviously overruled any standard way of going about this. Holding both of Lance’s hands, his fiancé panted through another contraction
“You’re being so brave”
“I dun like this at all”
“You won’t be giving VOLTRON a good Yelp review?”
“No offence, Coran, but id sucks”
Coran chuckled at Lance’s slurring
“I’m sure it does, my boy. I’ve got things ready, your Keith here has a lead foot”
“He apologised to the cops... and said he liked me more than them”
Keith let out a snort of laughter, taking himself by surprise with the noise. Lance grinned at him around his pain
“Yeah, yeah, I did. And I do like you more”
“I know...”
Wheeled into the room, staff were gathered waiting. Keith thought they’d be staying, but once the bed was positioned, the slowly filtered out
“For staff safety, it’ll be you and me in here, with a nurse for support”
“He’s too delirious with pain to hurt anyone”
“It’s because he’s delirious that we need to take caution. I assume you’re going to stay up that end”
Visions of finding Lance covered in blood came back to haunt him. Though Coran would be in control, he couldn’t face the blood
“I’m good”
“Excellent. Now, Lance my boy, I know it hurts. I need to clean you up and have a little look at your tummy”
“It hurds”
“I’m sure you’re if far more pain than you’re letting on. Let’s get you comfortable, then we’ll proceed. When’s the last time he had blood?”
“This early this morning...”
“Excellent. How much would say he consumed”
“Um... 10 bags”
Coran’s eyes widened, yeah. He got it. He should have called Coran instead of waiting
“That is impressive. Right, not to worry...”
“Telling me not to worry is making me worry”
“Oh, don’t worry. This isn’t the first baby I’ve delivered”
“There’s two of them in there. We’d like both of them, thanks”
Lance missed half the conversation
“Don’t let him take our babies away... I don’t want him to take them away”
“He won’t. We’re going to be the first to meet them”
Lance strained, trying to sit up
“I wanna see them”
“They have to be born first”
“Oh...”
“It’s okay...”
Keith’s job was to keep Lance’s focus on him. When Coran had gone to run an IV line, Lance had tried to escape him, snarling at the fae as he tried to cover his stomach. Sitting with his back toward Coran, the werewolf rubbed Lance’s leg, a blanket placed across to protect his fiancé’s dignity as Coran examined him. Lance not loving being touched, and Keith not loving that Coran was seeing Lance so intimately. Covering Lance’s legs back up with the blanket, Coran was the only one smiling
“Excellent. He’s already started dilating, amazingly fast really. The muscle ring is much softer more pliant than normal. His body is fascinating”
Coran did not just disrespect his mate
“He’s not an experiment. He’s in pain”
“Yes. Well, his waters have broken, perhaps with time he would have been able to deliver naturally, but the blood loss is alarming. You keep him preoccupied while I prep for surgery”
This all felt way too fucking real now that they’d come to a stop. He and Lance were going to be parents. After months and months and months of waiting. After their macaroons had turned to cupcakes, then foot and a half long subs, they’d soon be in the world as actual living people. Leaning in, Keith kissed Lance on the forehead, nuzzling the spot that was still too cold
“I love you so much. I couldn’t be prouder to be your mate”
“I love you, too... I’m sorry...”
“Shhh, there’s no need to be sorry. We’re going to be parents soon”
“You’re going to be the best dad”
“I don’t know, you’re really fucking amazing”
“I’m... it hurts...”
“I know, baby. I know. It’ll all be over soon”
“You won’t leave, will you?”
“Nope. I’m here. I’m here with you”
“Mmmm... best secret fiancé ever”
“Hey, you’re not too bad yourself”
Lance bit his lip as another contraction hit, snorting his breath out through his nose through the wave. Keith repeating himself, as he’d done over and over again in the longest half hour of his life
“You’re doing so good. So good for me...”
“It hurts... I feel gross”
“You look better than you feel””
“You’re beautiful. Our babies are going to be beautiful... Coran’s going to make the pain go away real soon, you just keep holding my hand until it does”
Setting a small curtain up to prevent Lance from seeing his stomach, Coran fetched Keith a chair as he let the drugs seep into Lance’s system. Coming back to them, the fae was far too enthused, followed by a nurse who wore a very tight polite smile. The fae had been gone long enough that Keith wondered if he’d run off to leave them alone to deliver the twins alone. Lance was still fighting the urge to push, Keith trying to remember how to coach him through breathing
“I’ve rung everyone, let them know what’s happening. They’ll be forced to wait upstairs until after the delivery, purely for safety reasons. Don’t want someone losing a limb because they can’t wait to see our babies. Now, this procedure is major surgery, don’t be alarmed if Lance passes out, he’s under quite a lot strain. Keith, did you manage to remember Lance’s bag?”
“It’s in the car”
“Excellent. Now, Lance, you may feel the need to struggle. I want you to keep your attention on Keith. I’m not going to harm you or the twins. Please try to keep that in mind”
Keith didn’t think Lance would fight Coran, not in his weakened state. The moment the vampire saw Coran holding a scalpel as he checked his instrument kit, Lance wanted out of there, promising this was a false alarm and he’d come back tomorrow if Coran took the knife away. The drugs had kicked in, Lance was high as a kite if he thought anyone in the room believed it. Keith didn’t want his scary his face to be the first thing their baby saw, but the poor werewolf’s ego was mad. They wanted to see the twins already, but they wanted to see them without Lance being hurt or cut open to deliver them. His ego was a stupid animal. Coran hadn’t even started the incision and Keith felt faint from the scent in the room.
Growling through another contraction, Keith’s hand was crushed all over again, Lance throwing his head back, sobbing out a “fuck” as the wave passed. Ooooh fuck... he’d grown used to Lance crushing his hand, but that was definitely Lance pushing. He wasn’t supposed to be pushing... Drugged up Lance probably couldn’t stop himself from how badly he wanted the twins out and the pain to be over
“Uhh, Coran... I don’t think he’s waiting for you”
Placing down the scalpel, Coran moved back to table. Lance was naked beneath the sheet, the fae letting panic was over his face before composing himself in the same moment
“He’s started crowning...”
Nope. They may not have had a birth plan, but Lance was clear about “not pooping out a baby”! Keith snapping at Coran
“He’s not supposed to be!”
Coran snapping back at him

Chapter 10: After the Training Mission
After the success of the morning’s simulation on the training deck, the Paladins headed toward the locker rooms, where they could strip off their armor, shower, and change into their Garrison uniforms. As Keith, Allura, and Hunk walked ahead of them, Lance and Pidge lagged behind, holding hands. Lance felt a little tug as Pidge led him toward a vacant supply room. “I need to talk to you about something in private,” she said as she led him inside and shut the door.
“Sure. What is it?” Lance asked as they set their helmets down on a nearby crate. She put her hands on his chest plate and looked up at him adoringly. Even without makeup and with sweat matting the loose strands of the hair that framed her face she looked beautiful. He felt his heart beating a little faster.
“You were incredible in the training simulation just now. Shiro was right, you know. We have never seen you fight like that before. It was amazing.”
Lance felt his face heat up. “Well, it’s like I said. I had the right motivation. My mission was to keep you safe.” He reached down to cup her face in his gloved hands. His voice deepened. “I had to protect the woman I love.” Lance gave her his most smoldering look, and Pidge’s blush was visible, even in the dim lighting.
He leaned down to kiss her, and she wrapped her arms around his neck to draw him closer as their lips came together in a passionate kiss. The room was small and Pidge was already near the wall. She backed into it, and Lance picked her up, bracing her against the wall. She wrapped her legs around his waist, holding onto him as she had when they were tumbling through the simulation of deep space. He kissed her as if she were the breath of life itself, with an urgency neither of them had ever experienced before, and she kissed him back with just as much passion. When their lips parted, they were both panting. She then kissed him everywhere she could reach—cheeks, temples, forehead, and chin. He closed his eyes and allowed her to cover his face with sweet little kisses. “I love you,” she whispered as she kissed the corner of his mouth. “I love you so much.”
“I love you, too,” whispered to her. He covered her face with the same soft little kisses she had given him. She closed her eyes, smiling and savoring the sensation. “You were brilliant today, as always,” he whispered in her ear, then kissed her there, then nibbled at her earlobe. She giggled at this new sensation. This was all so new to her, to both of them. He set her down, then kissed the top of her head. “We shouldn’t get too carried away,” he said.
“Right. Matt doesn’t want us to have to name any little garbage poofs after him just yet, remember?”
Lance laughed. “Well, I was going to take a hot shower to relax my aching muscles, but right now I think I need a cold shower first.” Pidge looked down, suddenly comprehending the meaning of his words. She blushed scarlet.
“I—I didn’t know I could cause that to happen,” she looked away from the place below his belt line where she had been staring. “Sorry.”
Lance picked up his helmet, and turned to leave. “I’m not.” He gazed at her from the now open doorway, silhouetted by the light from hallway beyond. He flashed her his sexiest lopsided grin, unashamed of himself, but secretly hoping that no one would pass by and see how uncomfortably tight his under suit was at the moment. Pidge looked adorably embarrassed, and averted her gaze. She grabbed her helmet and followed him out of the room.
They held hands again on the way to the locker rooms, and upon arrival, they finally parted from each other. “See you at lunch,” he told her, and he gave her a quick kiss on the cheek before they went their separate ways.
Hunk was putting on his uniform when Lance arrived in the locker room, and Keith, who had just come from the shower, had wet hair and was wrapped in only a towel. “What took you so long?”
“Uh, Pidge wanted to discuss the mission,” Lance said, as he turned away to begin removing his armor.
Hunk laughed. “Don’t let him fool you. He was probably making out with his girlfriend again.”
“Girlfriend? Lance finally has a girlfriend?!” Keith said in disbelief.
“Yes, I do have a girlfriend, Keith. Don’t be so shocked by that fact.” Lance sounded a bit offended.
“So, is she someone I know?” Keith was curious.
Hunk laughed. “Still Clueless Keith.”
“Typical,” Lance agreed. “I told you I was discussing the mission with her.”
“You mean Pidge?! She’s just a kid!”
“She’s eighteen now, and way more mature than any of us were at that age.”
“Listen, Loverboy. Pidge is a very important member of our team, and she’s also like a little sister to me, so if you are just messing around and trying to take advantage of her feelings—“
“I have already had this discussion with Matt, so back off, Keith. Mind your own business!” Lance yelled. Keith growled at him.
“Whoa! Calm down, both of you,” said Hunk. “For your information, Keith, I have had this talk with Lance, too, and he is handling things very maturely. Don’t jump to conclusions.”
Lance sat on the nearest bench, clad only in the bottom half of his under armor. He exhaled. “Thanks, Hunk.” He looked at Keith, then looked away. “I love her, okay? And she loves me. We are in a committed relationship, and that’s a bit scary for both of us. We have just survived the most brutal war that the universe has ever seen, and all of us have nearly died at one time or another. We aren’t doing anything stupid or irresponsible. We have actually discussed our future together.” Lance looked up at both of his friends. “Pidge and I want it all—marriage, a home, kids...a normal life. We both love being Paladins and serving the universe in the cause of freedom and all that, but we both want something for ourselves too. I think we deserve that. All of us deserve that.”
Keith sat down on the bench beside him. “I’m sorry. You’re right. And you and Pidge aren’t the only ones who have thought about the future in those terms,” he admitted. His expression has softened a great deal.
“Things are getting pretty serious between me and Shay,” Hunk confessed.
“Things between me and Allura are just getting started,” Keith added. “She’s lost nearly everything, and I know she thinks of all of us as her family, but I also know it would make her happy if she had a family of her own.” Keith looked away, embarrassed. “We have both submitted DNA samples to the exobiology lab for testing. There’s a very good chance that an Altean female can produce hybrid offspring with a male who is half human and half Galra.” Keith was blushing so deeply that he couldn’t meet their eyes.
“Shay and I haven’t even thought that far ahead,” Hunk said quietly. “But I still want to be with her even if we can’t have children. I love her.”
“Then you guys do understand. None of us are kids anymore.” Lance said. “And of the original Paladins, we know that Zarkon and Alfor had families of their own. If they can marry the women that they loved, why can’t we?”
“It’s not that easy, Lance,” Keith responded. “As far as we know, Trigel didn’t have any children of her own. Maybe she had to give that up to be a female Paladin. If Voltron is needed again someday, how would we go into battle if Pidge or Allura gets pregnant? Supposed one of them is going into labor when the universe needs us the most.”
There was a long silence. “I hadn’t thought about that before,” Lance admitted. He looked away, lost in thought.
“We have switched lions before,” Hunk mused aloud. “Shiro and Keith have both flown Black, Keith and Lance have both flown Red, and Lance and Allura have both flown Blue. Green has even accepted Matt as her co-pilot. Maybe Blue and Green would accept another pilot if Allura or Pidge were unable to fly for a period of time.”
“That’s a good point, Hunk. I think you could be right.” Keith looked hopeful.
Lance smiled. “I think we should discuss this with the girls, and with the lions,” he said. “And I’m gonna hit the shower before I miss lunch.”
Hunk was finished dressing. “See you guys there.”
Lance grabbed his towel and grooming kit and headed toward the stalls. He had a lot to think about.
Keith smiled to himself, lost in thought as he grabbed a smaller towel to dry his wet hair. He really hoped that Hunk was right. He daydreamed for a bit, wondering how his mother would react to having a grandchild that was half Altean. Then he found himself wishing his father could have lived long enough to meet Allura and the little family that they might someday have. He sighed and began combing his hair.
Lance stood under the hot water, no longer needing the cold shower. He washed his hair and lathered his body while considering talk he had just had with Hunk and Keith. Pidge, pregnant? Colleen and his mother would make such as fuss over her and the baby. Lance secretly hoped that the child would inherit the Holt family’s intelligence. What would it be like to be father to a genius? He imagined Sam would give the baby his or her first scientific educational toys. His own dad would probably pass out the finest Cuban cigars to all of their friends and family, even though none of them smoked. He smiled at the thought of all of the aunts and uncles the baby would have, spoiling the child with love and affection: Matt, Veronica, Rachel, Marco, Luis and Lisa...and the team...he imagined his baby being doted upon by Shiro, Coran, Keith, Allura, and especially Hunk. The thought of it made him so happy he began to cry a little. His mind wandered back to the training mission and how tightly he and Pidge clung to each other when they hurled through space, and that led to thoughts of how she had her arms and legs wrapped so tightly around him when they kissed in the supply room afterwards. What would her body feel like so close to his if they hadn’t been wearing armor? Soft, he thought. Smooth. He had held her in his arms when they danced and kissed before. Even though she had grown considerably taller since they had gone into space, compared to him, she was still so tiny. He would have to be very gentle with her the first time that they... No, he mustn’t indulge in those thoughts right now. He turned the temperature of the water down several degrees, and shut his eyes as it poured over him like cool spring rain.

Director’s Commentary- Fragile Hearts, Pidge finds Keith’s location
I MISSED THIS STORYYYYY
Hunk frowned, but got up to bring her the laptop. She turned it on and searched the website, happy to see that Hunk already had the same software she’d downloaded on her own computer for occasional hacking. “What are you doing?” he asked, leaning over to look over her shoulder.
“I’m figuring out where Keith’s at.”
“What?”
Pidge used the pictures to trace the locations, finding places she’d never even known existed. Keith had really gone into the most obscure places.
“Honeycomb, he could be anywhere at this point, finding the photo locations won’t- is that a government website?”
“Wouldn’t be the first time,” she answered. I liked this whole bit of banter because for me it was an allusion to how they were when they were young. And how certain aspects really stay with a person. Plus I just thought it was funny.
“In a few years, I’m gonna be visiting you in a federal prison, aren’t I?”
“Bold of you to assume I’ll get caught. I’m offended.”
“Well- whoa, what the hell?” Pidge had managed to pull up a file on Keith. “How…?”
“We were paladins. We fought aliens. You think the government isn’t keeping tabs on us?” Hunk grabbed his food and pulled his chair to sit closer to Pidge as she scrolled. “Jesus Christ. He’s been to over 100 countries. And even more cities and towns.”
“Is that his permanent address?”
“It’s what’s listed, but he hasn’t been there in over a year,” she muttered under her breath.
“This is borderline stalking.”
Pidge looked over at him and raised an eyebrow. “Everything we’ve been through, you’re drawing the line at this?” Another little funny jab.
Hunk laughed and shook his head. “Absolutely not. My girl’s a fucking genius.” Hunk drinks his respect women juice AND he loves his smart and powerful gf, these are the only type of het couples who are VALID. Pidge winked and returned to the screen. “What about a phone number?”
“There’s a house phone listed. No cellphone. God, why is he a real life cryptid, what the fuck?” I know there’s some like... fandom joke about Keith being a cryptid and such. I was never into it, but I felt like it fit the situation here. Keith’s constant moving is really just a state of constant running away and keeping busy.
“Maybe Lance is right. Maybe he doesn’t want to be found. He doesn’t have any family on Earth, there’s no one for him to stay in contact with.”
“We were his family! We spent all that time together, building relationships, fighting a war, and we created our own family. We all wanted to be found, you, me, Lance. Keith does too.” Everyone always has the bond between Keith and Lance, but I loved the fact that Keith bond was strong with everyone. He’s not a plus one to Lance in Hunk and Pidge’s eyes, he’s someone they also love and care about. And I really want that to show in this story.  Her fingers flew over the keys almost maniacally. “There. If a former paladin is traveling, you can count on our government following them. He last made it to… Attu island.” I had to research the most obscure places. Like. It was wild.
“Holy shit. You actually found him.”
“Why do you sound so surprised?”
“I mean I knew you would, just not that fast.” Pidge shrugged. There was a beat of silence, where they both stared at the name of the island on the screen. “Lance doesn’t even know if he wants to contact him though. I don’t think you should tell him yet. Let him sort out what he’s feeling.”
Pidge took a breath and eventually resigned, nodding her head and exiting the site. But she made a note in her phone of Keith’s website before finally dropping the subject fully.
Hunk wrapped an arm around her. They finished their food in silence, Pidge leaning against Hunk as they both tried to let all the new information sink in. This brings them back to their present. The hacking was a nod at who they were and what they did in the past. This part shows them coming back to this mundane life of silence and takeout.
It was strange to believe that just a few hours ago, she had told Hunk she loved him for the first time. It was a moment she thought would have been big and dramatic, probably said in front of the Bellagio, and honestly, said by Hunk first. Of course, he did say it first, but she didn’t know that.
Now she was reeling with the fact that Lance had managed to find Keith. It was concerning that he was so hung up on finding him that he managed it, but… Pidge was the one hacking government files for information. And now they knew where he was. It’s a definite struggle (especially because I was writing TNR at the same time as this) not to let this story get too far in Keith and Lance because the focus is Hunk and Pidge. When Keith does get brought in, it needs to be in light of Pidge, not Lance.
Maybe it was the fact that she didn’t have much of her blood family left. All she had was Matt. The prospect of getting her space family back together felt like a necessity. To get them all back in her life, to build that support they should have been for each other from the start.
But Hunk was right. Shiro had gone under the radar with some work for the Garrison, and Keith obviously didn’t want anyone contacting him. She wondered if they missed each other. They’d been practically brothers after all. She wondered if Keith had been living through acquaintances this entire time. Five years bouncing from place to place… it couldn’t have given him time for friends, much less a relationship as Lance feared. She wondered if Shiro was okay, and if she could maybe bring herself to go back to the Garrison, if only to see him again.
Then she began to wonder about Allura and Coran. If they had rebuilt their lives, if they remembered the paladins, if Allura ever thought of them or if Coran still called her Number Five when or if he ever talked about her.
And suddenly she was crying. She hated how often she was starting to do that, and ever since Matt pointed it out, she realized it really did happen more when she wasn’t at school. This is going to come into play in future chapters. Where Keith bounces around to run away, from his past, Pidge very much used schoolwork for that. In a way it made sense because at school she wasn’t surrounded by reminders or talking about the memories. But she also didn’t want it to be a bad thing because she loved being with Hunk and Lance and Matt. She was creating new memories with them.
“Oh, Pidge, come here,” Hunk murmured, pulling her from the chair and taking her to the couch where he could properly cuddle her.
“I miss them so much,” she whispered, wiping her eyes and trying to force herself to stop crying. She’d never cried this much even as a teen in a war. It was ridiculous.
“I know. I miss them too.” Hunk scratched her head soothingly, bringing her in closer. “We’re always going to hold on to pieces from our past. And honestly, knowing Keith? It seems like he’s been running from it. It won’t be long before he has to face it. For all we know, he’s just as strung up on Lance as Lance is on him.” He is. Very much so.
“How did we all make things so difficult for ourselves? We should have stuck together.” I know there’s a lot of posts about how it doesn’t make sense for found families to go their merry ways after it’s all over, and I wanted to show that here. That even though they were all working through trauma and trying to start over, they shouldn’t have split up.
“We all needed different things, Pidge. We just have to take it step by step.” She nodded and held onto him tighter, letting the rise and fall of his chest soothe her. “Hey.” She looked up at him. “I love you.”
Pidge smiled and bit her lip. “That’s the first time you’ve said it in English,” she whispered. He smiled at her. “I love you too.” But I mean... people who are meant to be together and who love each other will always find their way back to each other. And they’re older now, they’ll now what to do this time.

YEAR LONG VOLTRON ART CHALLENGE --ORIGINAL VERSION
Okay so, was talking to @giugiuryu about this challenge, and decided that yes, it was time to write this list up and post it.
So below the cut here we have 365 Voltron art prompts, one for each day of the year!  This list was written up by my lovely wife @wireslide and is very, VERY informed by her personal preferences and headcanons.  So I invite anyone and everyone to join me in the fun of doing this challenge, but also to make changes to the list where you see fit.  Don’t want to add stuff from the comics?  Want Lotor prompts?  Need the entire ‘draw these two people together’ section to be exclusively your OTPs?  Make it so!  I, for example, will NOT be doing the list exactly as posted, but making a few changes where the daily prompt doesn’t really catch my interest.  So think of this as a framework and jumping off point for your ideal year of Voltron.
And please, please tag me if you plan to join in!  I’d love to follow and watch your progress!

Many ways to say I love you: Day Twenty Three.
Kidge-a-palooza 2019 Prompt: Pillow Talk. Pairing: Kidge (VLD) Universe: Canon.  Status: Part 5/7
Keith threw the papers toward the table when his eyesight began to feel more tired than usual, and sleepier than he would like to admit. He brought one of his fingers to the bridge of his nose to massage the discomfort that had given him to review hundreds of reports that were the same as his judgment. Arriving on earth had had great benefits for everyone, Keith could admit that, but working with Garrison's bureaucracy was something he was definitely not used to. Not even the Blade needed to resort to so much paperwork after field explorations or errands with allied planets. After he was unable to understand what he was reading, no matter how much he tried to concentrate, Keith decided to leave until the next morning.
Or day, in space it was difficult to know the time when one was distracted for too long. He saw his holopad clock to find out how many hours of sleep he had left before starting a new routine in Atlas.
2:35 a.m
He stretched with regret while he got up, at least he could rest about five hours before the first alarm. He headed for his designated room, dragging his feet through the corridors, watching like some people still stood watching the safety of the ship in which they were traveling on orders from the commanders. Something inside Keith was removed from nostalgia when he thought about how different Atlas was from the Castle of lions. Although his last years had lived between the secret base of BOM and in the quantum abysm next to his mother, Keith still had good memories when he lived with his friends in the altean castle.
Like how Hunk was investigating and preparing new dishes with what he found on desolate planets, Coran and Allura on the central bridge directing new coordinates to their destinations as guardians of the universe, Lance competing with him for the aisles at the slightest comment or suspicious look, Shiro instructing him on what was the best combat technique in the training room. Or Pidge resting in the lion's hangar updating her duties while trying to explain to him what she was doing, failing in the attempt.
Many times, those memories saved him from the madness of living in the middle of an intergalactic war. Sometimes even he couldn't measure everything they had lived in the last time since they discovered the blue lion in the desert. But there they were, in a ship of the latest terrestrial technology created by Commander Holt, fighting together with hundreds of people of different races to restore the freedom of the universe against the coming threats.
Although Keith at that time just wanted to sleep.
When he passed through the rest area, he vaguely remembered another of the many personal memories of the castle he guarded suspiciously. For a few seconds, he thought it was ridiculous, considering how many people in Atlas anyone could enter the room to pass the time. But he didn't stop his feet from moving automatically, opening the doors in the expectation of finding her with her computer.
His surprise was immediate when his instincts didn't deceive him. In the middle of a dark room, Pidge was lying on the floor wrapped in a comforter seemingly warm enough for comfort, with a cup of coffee on one side, and her computer in front. Her lenses reflected any image, so she would surely be watching a movie.
Keith smiled to himself when that image of seeing Pidge spending time as a normal teenager became very similar when they lived in the castle. His heart contracted from a sensation he thought he had long forgotten, but there he was again, excited to think of being alone in the same space as her, far from the sight of others.
''If you want to rest, we have rooms, you know?'' Pidge jumped when she heard his voice and the sound of the door closing behind his back. ''It's late, you should be sleeping.''
''Oh yeah?'' Pidge answered selflessly, stopping whatever she was seeing on her computer, stretching lazily. It seems that not only he had run out of time. ''I didn't even realize.''
''Clearly.''
Keith lay next to her, causing Pidge to slap her shoulder playfully while claiming about her ‘stolen space’ and trying to get away from him. Keith also removed the comforter after settling on the floor for Pidge to claim with greater emphasis. Causing a battle of laughter while fighting.
''Hey, that was mine!''
''I confiscate it, your leader needs it.'' Keith answered taking Pidge's hands so he wouldn't take it off easily. She just snorted incredulously.
''Since when does my leader Galra need such a thick blanket?'' She questioned struggling her wrists to free herself from his hands, highlighting the Galra in prayer.
''I have begun to age hastily during this trip.'' Keith moved enough to turn their bodies when they laughed, causing Pidge to stay under him, wrists held by his hands. ''It's something Galra.''
''What a liar you are!''
''You don't believe me?''
''Give me back my blanket!'' Pidge said, imitating an offended accent despite the wide smile on her lips. Keith approached his face to give her a quick kiss on her nose.
''Sorry Pidge, now it belongs to me.''
''The leader of Voltron is a thief and a pedophile, help!''
Pidge shouted before they fell into a new caress and tickle fight, but not too loud to be heard outside. Keith laughed at how ridiculous it sounded while defending himself against her attacks, taking her wrists to stop her again. This time, Pidge was on top of his body as she rested her arms on his chest, looking at him with that cheeky smile that Keith found so irresistible of her, especially when she bit her lower lip unconsciously at a thought.
God, he had missed her so much in recent years, even if it had been only months for her, it had been an eternity for him.
Keith for a moment realized that they had stopped fighting for several seconds, coughing slightly to rebuild their posture. It was very easy to get lost in those golden eyes when he had them so close.
''I accept the thief, but I never remember becoming a pedophile.'' Keith said with a serious look or an attempt from her. Pidge for her part, snorted hard.
''You are with a minor, Mr. Kogane. You should know that what you are doing is illegal.'' Pidge raised an eyebrow when she saw his surprised face. ''And considering that now you have two more years since your return in the quantum abyss, I fear that five years of difference implies a rather high sentence.''
''It's funny that you tell me about illegal acts, Pidge Gunderson.''
Keith defended himself, but without malice in his words, he was only following in stupid play that Pidge had decided to propose. He didn't take it seriously; they weren't on earth anyway and he had done much more than lying next to his younger companion in a government room.
The only thing Keith could fear on that ship over any officer if someone came into the room by chance was Commander Holt. Who surely had no idea about the relationship he had with his daughter under the table and anyone's eyesight. For a while, he supposed that Matt and Shiro suspected after what happened in Naxzela, but they were reasonable enough not to say anything at the moment.
The war they lived in had turned them into something strange. They were nothing, and they were all at once. Close friends who supported each other in ways no one else could.
He circled Pidge's waist with his hands to draw her a little closer to his body. The quilt several minutes ago went to the background and at that time they only wanted to stay that way, losing themselves in each other's eyes while their hands gave slight caresses in the area where they were. It was a comfortable environment, where words were not necessary.
If both could see a shooting star through the window of the room, they would like time to stop at that precise moment, where the threats seemed to have disappeared from space and Voltron was not needed.
They expected such a reality to happen soon.
A loud yawn from Pidge quickly brought them out of the trance. Keith smiled sympathetically.
''You better go to sleep.'' Keith said in a soft whisper, Pidge groaned in protest.
''Not yet. Just, let's stay here.''
''You have to rest. We both have to rest or we will fall asleep at the Shiro conference.''
''Fuck Shiro.''
They both laughed at Pidge's scathing comment, coming out more like a groan than something really insulting. She groaned again when she moved closer to Keith's body, placing her head in the space of his neck. She liked his smell; it was much more masculine and attractive than since she last felt it so close.
Pidge closed her eyes for a moment, concentrating on Keith's touches around her waist. Until, without realizing it, the words came out of her mouth.
''Do you think it will ever end?''
''What thing?'' Keith asked, without stopping his caresses, what Pidge thanked internally.
''All this war. I mean, the last time we thought we'd make it, Zarcon didn't die and we had to deal with Lotor. And when we defeated him after we met his true intentions. Zarcon's whitch appeared out of nowhere with a force much more overwhelming than Lotor's. It's like...'' Pidge paused for a moment, taking a breath while ordering the ideas inside her head. Even if she didn't see him, she knew that Keith was listening to her. ''It's like when we think we've won...''
''It just doesn't stop.'' Keith added; Pidge held on with some more force when she heard him.
''Exactly.''
''We knew that this wouldn't be easy... We would have to fight with forces that exceeded us in number and experience, but hey... We have left everything alive so far, right?''
''But how long will that fate last?'' Pidge inquired, with a latent fear blooming from her insides. ''What happens if…?''
''Pidge...''
Keith began a path of kisses on her face sweetly to mitigate her fears. He could understand her, many of those questions were also asked regularly when they left the problems barely alive and a few bruises. And he had never found the answer to any of them.
But at that time, it was his duty to calm her partner's insecurity.
''Everything will be fine.'' He took her face so they could both see each other. ''We are together in this.''
''We were also together when we were stranded in space, and you almost left on your own.'' Pidge's eyes darkened in pain; Keith bit his lower lip at the mention of that experience. ''What guarantees me that it won't happen again?''
''I know you're worried about all this... But even if I can fail, others are also there to support us.''
''It is not enough.''
He knew not.
Sometimes he used to be extremely stubborn and failed countless times as Votron's leader just because of his impulses the first few times. He couldn't help it; he was still human and many situations sometimes surpassed him. The others understood and were willing to support him when Keith was heading towards bad decisions that could cost them their lives.
But Pidge was afraid. And many times, he forgot that, despite her vast intelligence, she was still a sixteen-year-old girl in the middle of a war. Atlas could give them some more stability since they had their families close to the earth and supported them at all times, but ...
It was not enough.
Pidge removed herself from his arms to get up from the ground, with a look fallen from sleep and constant fears that possibly interfered with proper rest.
''Sorry for bothering you with those things.''
''It's ok, Pidge.'' Keith got up too, bringing his hand to her cheek. She felt freezing under his touch. ''It's good to talk those things. If you want, you can always go to my room and continue having pillow talk.'' Pidge's eyes widened at the suggestion and then gave way to a haughty smile.
''Keith, you should take your hands away from me if you don't want to be jailed.''
''Can you stop with that!?''
They started a new sleight of hand that ended when Pidge got up to the exit, taking her computer with her triumphantly. Keith took the comforter off the floor, keeping it in the closet of the room where it belonged.
Pidge before closing the door behind her, turned to Keith.
''Hey Keith.''
''Yeah?'' He answered turning to her once he closed the closet.
''Thank you.'' Keith nodded, approaching her to give her a sweet kiss on her forehead.
''Anytime.''

I really love the Kidge Child HCs, I honestly can't get enough of them! Do you have any Grandma Krolia headcanons? Or headcanons for the rest of the Paladins?
REMEMBER HOW I JUST SAID THIS WAS COMING SOON?? IT’S FINALLY HERE, EVERYBODY!!!!!
First, for those who may not have seen my other posts, here are the links to all my other Headcanon posts.
Kidge Married Pre-Babies: [here]
Kidge w/ Babies Part 2.1: [here]
Kidge w/ Babies Part 2.2: [here]
Kidge w/ Babies Part 2.3: [here] *There’s a little angst in this one, FYI
Kidge w/ Babies Part 2.4: [here]
Kidge w/ Babies Part 2.5: [here]
I’m gonna go the full monty with thisone; we’re taking about the kids with Krolia, Sam, Colleen, Matt, the Paladins(and any/all of their children), and all the other peripheral people involvedwith them! This is gonna be a little bit of a longer one, as such, but I wantto be as thorough as possible!
Also, mentioning this here, but there will also be mentionsof Shatt (I have two sets of headcanons for Shiro and Matt, both as a coupleand in relationships with other people, but don’t want to have to write downboth alternatives), Hunay, and Allurance, as well as me talking a little bitabout their respective families, so be aware.
The order will be as such; Krolia, Sam and Colleen, Matt andShiro, Hunk and Shay, Lance and Allura, Coran, Romelle, Kolivan and Slav.
Krolia
As I know I’ve mentioned in my previous parts, the kidsrefer to Krolia as “Nana Olia”. Amber was the one who started it – obvious, asshe’s the oldest – because, when trying to say Krolia’s name, she couldn’t getthe “Kuh” sound right, gave up, and opted into the part of her name that shecould pronounce. The other kids follow Amber’s lead because she’s their bigsister. Krolia loves having a special name that only the kids use for her.
So, being a grandma was never something Krolia ever thoughtshe’d get the chance to be, but she absolutely loves it. Part of this is because she gets to come over and engage withthe grandbabies at an age she didn’t get to with Keith, which is bittersweet. She comes over to visit as often as she can and loves playing with the kids;specifically, she loves taking the kids to the park and going on little walkswith them. She’ll admit in private that she has a soft spot for Kaden – due tohow much he looks like Keith – but she loves each of her grandkids equally.
So, for each of the kids, Krolia goes on the harrowingsearch for more luxite mineral to get them each their own brand new blades.Amber and Kaden are the two who make the most use of theirs; Newt keeps his incase he gets himself in a hairy situation, and Aria keeps hers mounted in herroom for safe keeping.
In regards to Amber, she absolutely adores what a fiestylittle thing she is. She often remarks that Amber carries in her the fire ofthe ancients in her, remarking that she’ll certain accomplish great things inher future. Krolia is absolutely correct about this, but that’ll be somethingwe talk about in later posts. She always starts their little training sessionswith a small meditation session to help get Amber grounded, and this actuallybecomes something that Amber implements in her every day; especially onstressful days. Krolia enjoys teaching her how to properly use her luxite bladeand teaching her about what, exactly, being a successful Blade member entails.
She never admits that Amber wouldn’t be the best atespionage due to how short-tempered she is, but she still loves how enthralledAmber gets to hear her stories.
Kaden breaks her heart in some of the harder ways during hisinfant and toddler years, simply because watching him interact with the worldis a physical mirror to what it looked like with Keith at that age, and shemissed out on all of that. She admits this to Keith and Pidge, who both trytheir best to help comfort her. As Kaden gets older, he becomes equallyinterested in the lessons she does with Amber, so she starts training both ofthem. He’s also a bit more interested in their Galran heritage and the historyof the Blade; including how long their Galran family had been involved and ifthere were any relatives of notoriety. This leaves her absolutely thrilled andshe’ll often tell him about their long family-lineage of involvement.
Kaden actually writes a history paper discussing his great, great, great, great grandfather, Tulore, for class. He got a perfect mark andgave it to Krolia to keep when it was returned.
Her relationship with Newt is a bit strange at first butdevelops much better as he gets older. At first, Krolia sees him as a littlehellion since he’s almost always a shrieking little grouch, and is very meekabout engaging with him. Due to what occurred when he was born and his infantilepersonality, she thinks this means that he’s much more delicate than hissiblings were, and she worries a lot about hurting him. Once he starts to getolder and his tears transform into tricks, she sees how clever he is and findsit entertaining. Something about a child constantly outwitting his parents andsiblings is entertaining.
She’ll occasionally bring him materials from other planetsto help improve his pranks; taking the time to explain how he safely use it, ofcourse.
Aria is a bit of an odd duck when it comes to Krolia, specifically because of how drastically different she is from her siblings. Herbeing such a delicate little thing makes Krolia hyper-aware of how she is withher, but the fact that she’s the clingiest, most affectionate of her siblings?Oh, Krolia loves nothing more than getting to snuggle up with her littlegrandbabies. Additionally, small footnote, but Aria and Krolia share a distainfor the snow. Krolia lived her years on Earth in the desert and she tends toprefer warmer climates in general. During the wintery season, she’ll oftenhunker down in the house with Aria is the other kids want to go play in thesnow, sipping cocoa and playing with her inside.
She teaches Aria a lot of old Galran lullabies, as well asactually teaching her their language, too.
Sam and Colleen
For the Holts, the kids call them “Nanny” and “Pappy”.Sometimes they’ll use their names as well, but since they have different titlesfor their grandparents, it’s not always needed. When they do add the names, they’re “Nanny Collie” and “Pappy Sammy”.
Being grandparents was something Colleen and Samuel had beenhyped for the minute their kids got into serious committed relationships. They’rerespectful and understanding to the situation, of course, but there’s a secretbetting pool between them on which of their kids will yield grandkids first.Colleen loses because she bets on Matt and Shiro, banking on the fact she knewthe two of them had been having more active conversations about it than shethought Pidge and Keith were. Samuel banked on it being Pidge and Keith morebecause he’d noticed the subtle things; Pidge looking at baby clothes whenparoozing the mall, Keith making the throw-away comment about what kind ofthemes he think would be cute for a nursery, etc.
I know I’ve mentioned this before, but Colleen knits littlebaby blankets for all the little Kidgelings, using colors that arerepresentative of the respective season they were born in. Samuel also does alittle crafty thing for them; he makes little ceramic ornaments of the kidsfeet when each of them after they’re born.
So, Amber is probably just a little bit closer to Colleenthan Samuel, but it’s a very slim margin. As I’ve mentioned, she tends to helpKeith with tending to their garden and yard at home. When she goes over tovisit with the Holt’s, she loves seeing what latest new flower or vegetableNanny has introduced to her garden. During the summer, Amber will also drop inunannounced to help Colleen take care of pulling weeds and such, since sheknows it can be hard for her.
With Samuel, Amber explores an interest in space travel andwhat, exactly, that entails. Pidge and Keith will tell the kids stories abouttheir time as Paladins, but they don’t talk about the really difficult andfrightening missions, and they don’t necessarily encourage the kids to followin their footsteps. As she gets older, Amber is a bit more aware of herparents’ apprehension, so most of her interest is only ever explored underPappy’s watchful eye. He tells her about the things he’s seen, the ships he’spiloted and helped to build, and occasionally sneaks her onto the Garrison baseto fly simulators. Samuel keeps this all secret from Pidge and Keith, though, because he thinks they’d be terrified at just how skilled their daughter is.Amber never outright asks him to keep this under wraps, but she appreciatesthat he does.
Kaden’s naturally reserved demeanor leads him towards morequiet hobbies, but also ones that are a bit more hands-on. Much like withKeith, Kaden bonds with Samuel about making models, but with Samuel it’s moreclassic vehicle models such as old trains or boats. They’ll typically sit withsome soft music playing in the background, but as Kaden gets older they’lloccasionally have more conversations about whatever’s going on in their livesat the time. It’s mostly just pre-teen angst and post-retirement gossip, butit’s nice and Kaden enjoys it.
As for Colleen, she bonds with him over painting, actually!Kaden’s not very good at drawing with a pen or pencil, but he’s pretty good atdoing landscapes with paint. I like the idea that Colleen was a hobbyist whoused painting as a form of stress relief, and she ends up passing this on toKaden. She’ll show him all the little tips and tricks she’s figured out for herown, and he’s always happy to take her advice. Colleen likes to hang some ofher favorites of his paintings in her office at work and, upon retiring, shekeeps them hanging in the guest room of the house. It always makes Kaden superembarrassed but also super flattered by it.
So, Newt’s cheeky and mischievous nature make him prettygood at things that require a high level of trickery; this includes poker, which he’s taught by his Nanny. Colleen actually tries out a couple ofdifferent card games with him – War, Uno, Spoons, etc. – but poker ends up being the one that Newt enjoys the most. The kid justloves getting to be a sneaky little shit, and he’s incredibly skilled with hispoker face. Colleen takes him with her sometimes for her weekly poker gameswith her friends and he usually makes a killing in hard, caramel candies.
With Samuel, he enjoys playing more tactical, contemplativegames, such as Risk and Clue. Newt has inherited Pidge’sinquisitive nature, but also ends up developing a huge fascination withmysteries and scandals and such. He likes the idea of breaking down lies anddeceit used for malicious intentions, inheriting his Dad’s sense of morality. He may be a little shit who likes to prank and tease his family, but he’s alittle shit for Great Justice™. One time, for the fun of it, Samuel hide aplaque he received upon his retirement and pretended it got stolen for Newt toinvestigate. During his investigation, Newt uncovered that one of the Holt’sneighbor’s was involved in helping with human trafficking.
So, since Aria’s the family oddball, she ends up with someodd interests that she shares with her grandparents, too. With Sam, they bondover researching old, classic amusement park rides and innovations, interestingly enough. While Aria isn’t a big fan of mechanics or engineering, she finds the lore and developments of entertainment technology to beabsolutely fantasy, and I headcanon that Samuel was a total theme park fan boyin his younger years. They’ll watch videos and documentaries, and one time theyactually broke into an abandoned amusement park to take pictures and videos ofhow far dilapidated the place got.
With Colleen, they learn how to make special effects propstogether. One of the little troops Ari attends for her performances is short onstage hands, so Colleen volunteers to help, and sometimes the cast have to helptoo. Part of this requires masks and other such things, but because the Holt’srun under the mantra of “Go Big or Go Home”, they become super invested in thequality of their work. They watch tutorials, take classes, watch tons of Face Off on Sci-Fi, and, of course, learnfrom some level of trial and error. Ari’s group put on Beauty and the Beast once and they actually had to remake theBeast’s face piece because the mask was deemed too realistic and terrifying forthe grade schoolers that would be coming to see it. During Halloween, Ari andColleen also end up creating the scariest haunted house in the town with howrealistic they make the make-up look. Especially zombie-with-head-axe Amber, who is surprisingly dedicated to her role.
Shiro and Matt
Mkay, so, I’m not going to get into all my Shatt headcanonshere, but I will give a brief overview of their family and their relationshipswith the Kidgelings. So, I headcanon that Shiro and Matt have three kids; a setof twins – one boy and one girl – and a second daughter; names are Akihiko,Auryon and Hikari respectively. The twins are born in the gap between Amber andKaden, placing them about a year and a half younger than Amber and a year or soolder than Kaden, while Hikari is born the same year as Newt, but at the tailend of the year. The children are biologically Shiro and Matt’s, born throughwhatever means is most comfortable to the viewer. I’m sure Altean tech could beadvanced enough to allow this sort of thing, or one of them could be trans. Ipersonally love Trans!Character headcanons but that’s just me.
So anyway! We’ll start with Shiro, then Matt, and then I’lldo small notes about the relationship between the cousins.
I mentioned this in my last post and said I’d elaboratehere, so here we go! Amber talks with Shiro a lot about sexuality and thestruggles that come with it. Keith and Pidge are completely supportive of theirdaughter, and she’s fine talking with them, but sometimes she likes getting totalk to Shiro about it. I’ve always headcanoned that Shiro is someone who isincredibly comfortable in his own skin and simply saw his sexuality as oneother part that made him who he was, and never shied away from that. It’s thatconfidence in himself that makes him so easy to talk to for Amber.Additionally, Shiro being a bit more of a modest and well-spoken sort – whereUncle Matt is a bombastic disaster – makes him a bit easier to talk to aboutwhat’s going on in her head. They tend to gossip all the time and Shiro, who isattentive to those he cares about, always remembers the stories about herclassmates and crushes that she shares with him. Aside from those talks, Shiroalso bonds with her over helping her a bit with her classical literaturereadings for school, because she finds the classics dull but I think Shirowould really respect those pieces himself. He mostly just helps her by lettingher bounce thoughts off of him and give her some additionally insight to thedifferent ways the pieces art interpreted.
Keith appreciates the help, since sometimes Amber can be abit stubborn and ill-tempered when she struggles with her homework, and Shiro’sa bit more patient.
As for Kaden, Shiro helps him a lot with his training forthe teams he joins and doing workouts. Once the kids are a bit older andindependent, Keith is able to pick his workout schedule back up and Shiro tendsto go along with him. As Kaden starts getting interested in sports and, byproxy, starts taking how well he maintains his physical health more seriously,he starts asking questions about it. Keith knows a decent amount, but admitsthat most of what he knows is from Shiro helping him out, which causes him togo ask Uncle Shiro his questions. From there, Shiro offers to help Kaden figureout his schedule to help keep him in peak form for his teams and such. Sometimesthey’ll work out all three of them, but more times than not it’s just Shiro andKaden, since Keith tends to get busy doing other things with the other kidswhen they’re gonna do their workouts. From the workouts, Shiro eventually endsup helping Kaden out specifically with his training for baseball. Shiro sees itas a good way to keep himself active, as well as pass along his own knowledge.Sometimes, he and Matt’s son, Akihiko, will join them, too.
This helps Aki and Kaden bond as well, but I’ll talk moreabout that later.
Newt is a bit of an anomaly when it comes to hisrelationship with Shiro. Between Uncle Shiro and Uncle Matt, he’s mostcertainly closer with Matt, but Newt very much loves his Uncle Shiro and findsa unique way to bond and help him. Much like a majority of people like to talkabout, I like the idea of Shiro benefitting from having a service animal. However, I also see Shiro as being someone who doesn’t like the idea of lettinghis weakness show; because he didn’t want his illness to hold him back when hewas younger, because he had to be in charge both with Voltron and later theAtlas, and in more recent times because he has three little babies of his ownto look after. I plan to write a fic about this, but Newt finds out aboutShiro’s situation and starts looking into what it takes to train a dog to be aproper service animal. He ends up adopting a young pup from one of theirneighbors, with Keith and Pidge agreeing, and starts working with specialiststo get the little pooch trained up to help Shiro cope with panic attacks andnight terrors he gets on a somewhat regular basis.
Shiro is absolutely floored but also incredibly touched bythe gesture. He ends up naming the little pooch Leia.
With Shiro and Aria, they bond over something a bit on theodd side. So, this was a headcanon that was inspired by a talk with my oldersister that I absolutely fell in love with. Shiro is a huge fan of theprohibition era style; speakeasies, mobster/gangster organizations, the wholeshebang is just wildly fascinating to him. Aria herself has a soft spot for theaesthetic and the Big Band sounds of the time. And, since Shiro is a big fan ofthat time period, he has a huge collection of music from the time period. The twoof them bond over it. One year, for Halloween, he actually helped her make hervery own flapper costume from scratch.
So, what about good ole’ Uncle Matt?
Matt and Amber bond over space travel, much like she doeswith Sam but on a drastically different note. He talks a lot with her about theworlds he got to visit with the Rebels and what all he learned. He teaches hera lot about different cultures and customs, different strategic approaches theytake and the like, as well as how to read the stars in some of the othergalaxies hes traversed to. He and Keith have a few serious conversations aboutit, as Keith is highly uncomfortable with his kids taking an interest in spaceexploration, but Matt continues to do it anyway. After the fifth or sixthconversation, he just gets better at lying about it.
As for Matt and Kaden, they bond over medical training andmedical shows. As I mentioned before, Kaden becomes fascinated by the work ofEMTs and medical professionals after he breaks his arm. Matt, through both the Garrisonand the Rebellion, has a pretty decent wealth of knowledge on the subject. Heteaches Kaden how to do CPR properly, how to make a short-term splint forbroken bones, and other such things. In regards to programs, they watch tons ofHouse, Untold Stories of the ER and Scrubs. With the drama shows, they mostly just make fun of how ludicrous it is, whilefocusing on the diagnostics. With the reality-based shows, they enjoy seeinghow the case develops and the ultimate outcome. Sometimes Auryon will jointhem, just to have something to do, but that’s incredibly infrequent.
Newt and Matt go together like peanut butter and chocolate,to say the least, and they have the most shared interests. The big one theyshare on, though, is a love for all things Star Wars and Star Trek themed; theshows, the comics, even a couple of podcasts that talk about the lore of eachrespective series in depth. Newt likes Star Trek a bit more than Star Wars –and he really likes Captain Picard – while Matt is the opposite – with a hugeaffinity for Han Solo – and they like to tease one another good-naturedly aboutit pretty often. Other than that, Matt is his biggest helper when preparingLeia to be a proper service dog for Shiro when he gets the idea and is the oneto first suggest it to Keith and Pidge.
Lastly, Uncle Matt and Aria bond about her cheerleading, interestingly enough. I like the idea that Matt, despite being a bit of stringbean, was on the cheer team in his high school years. Back then, he wasn’t verygood at helping with the flyer stunts, but as an adult who has lived throughfighting with a rebellion and being a Dad to three kids? He can most certainlylift up his petite little niece to practice her flyer routine. Aki joins thecheerleading squad as well, so he’ll help out sometimes, too. Additionally,Matt played the violin, so sometimes they’ll do duets together. They typicallypick pieces where the cello takes the lead, as he hasn’t really kept up withplaying over the years, but also because it’s good practice for her.
Now, as for how they bond with their cousins, the dynamicsare interesting, to say the least.
Aki gets along well with Kaden and Aria the best, gets alongdecently well with Newt, but actually butts heads a lot with Amber. Aki’s alittle bit of a rebel and tends to get himself into a lot of trouble, whichAmber often times tries to dissuade him away from. And, if he doesn’t listen, she tends to be the one to narc on him. As they get older, she’ll typically goalong and have Hikari, his sister, record his stupid stunts and show them offlater. Many times, she’ll end up using it as either blackmail or showing it tohis parents without showing it to him first. Her favorite was the time when hewent to a party, got drunk underage, and face-planted doing a keg stand. Asmentioned before, he bonds with Kaden and Ari over baseball and cheerleading, respectively. He’s a bit more of a physical activities kind of kid, with apassion for those kinds of things visible since he’s young. With Newt, they don’thave a whole lot in common, but Aki still looks after him because he’s hiscousin and is also a smol. Newt also occasionally helps him with his mathhomework, since he struggles a bit with his academics.
As for Auryon, she gets along pretty well with all of themequally. With Amber, they bond a lot over the ideas of space travel. WhileAuryon herself isn’t particularly interested in engaging with travelling, shedoes find the way the now-unified galaxy operates, and how the unification effectseach different planet within the Coalition, which leads to some interestingconversations between them. Auryon and Kaden bond over, interestingly enough, martial arts and hand-to-hand combat training. She admires Amber’s eagerness tofight to protect her friends so she decides she wants to learn as well. Sinceshe and Kaden are a bit closer in age, he tends to be her sparring partner moretimes than not. With Newt, they share a passion for animals. Auryon actually hastwo ferrets – named Boo and Radley – that she loves to pieces and Newt happilyjoins her with playing with them and has even helped her with cleaning up theircages every now and again. With Ari, they actually bond over learning foreignlanguages. Specifically, they both learn Italian together, but Auryon alsolearns how to speak Japanese. Sometimes, she’ll translate songs from Japaneseto English for Ari to do covers of for her YouTube channel.
Hikari, as opposed to her brother and sister, is an artistictype with a decent relationship with all her cousins. She and Amber have thebiggest rift between them, due to the moderate age gap, but they enjoy makingher brother miserable. Like most little sister’s, Kari lives for teasing her brother. So, when Amber offers her theperfect chances to do that? She’ll be there with a camcorder in a heartbeat. With Kaden, she recordshe and Auryon’s sparring sessions to use as reference for some of heranimations. Additionally, Kaden enjoys just talking with her about his lovelife. I won’t go into too much about it here, but she offers him significantlymore practical advice than his other source of information coughAlforcough. WithNewt, he’s pretty good for sound boarding her ideas off of. While he’s workingon this or that, or training the dogs, she’ll settle in and just kind oframble. If he thinks something is dumb or needs more thought, he’ll say asmuch, which she appreciates. She and Ari bond over the aforementioned YouTubechannel. She helps record and edit together the music videos that Arioccasionally makes for the songs that she performs, as well as handling thedirectorial responsibilities. She loves getting to have the experience andreally enjoys how she and the rest of their little group work together.
Hunk and Shay
Much like with Shiro and Matt, just a quick rundown of theGarrett family! Hunk and Shay had two children together; one son named Richterand one daughter named Morganite. Richter is a few months younger than Amberand Morganite is a few months younger than Newt. The reason for the huge agegap between to the two siblings is due to another headcanon of mine, in whichthe less similar two alien races are, the more difficult it is to reproducesuccessfully. Galra, Altean and humans are all somewhat similar in geneticmake-up, so it’s easier for them to conceive, but since Balmerans can bedrastically different based upon their environment. Due to this, while it’sclearly capable, it is a bit of a struggle. They’d been trying long before anyof the others to conceive Richter, and are delighted when he’s born. They weren’tactually trying to conceive Morganite and view her as a happy accident.
So, let’s talk about Uncle Hunk for a moment or two!
In regards to Amber, Hunk is actually appreciative of whatan abrasive personality she is. He knows that Richter tends to be on the morereserved side, which makes him an easy target for bullies, but she’s alwaysthere to protect him. As a sort of repayment for how good of a friend she is tohis son, he tries to help teach her how to cook and bake. Kaden ends up joiningin the little lessons, too, simply out of interest to learn how so he can helpout more at home. Amber’s downright awful at anything culinary-themed, but withHunk’s help she ends up getting decent. She can’t do anything particularlyfancy or extravagant, but she can make meals without burning down the kitchenand those meals taste well enough to not leave her paying homage to the porcelainGods.
Kaden actually ends up being a lot better than Amber, aswell as being a bit better at baking than cooking. He can make some of the mostbeautiful multiple-layer cakes out there. When the extra-curricular activitieshe participates in do fundraising bake sales, he always volunteers to help makeproduct for sale. A lot of the time, Hunk will help him as well. They alwaysend up making asinine amounts of baked goods, but they also end up selling allof it, so it never goes to waste.
With Hunk and Newt, he gets to work with him on his roboticsprojects and such. Newt and Morganite end up joining the robotics club andalways work together on the projects they’re completing. Team Punk often getsback together to help the pair out. Hunk takes the time to really explain thenecessary components to create an engine that’ll allow the robot to do whatthey intended purpose is, as well as occasionally smuggling themGarrison-issued supplies that they probably shouldn’t have access to. Do thejudges at the competition need to know that? Absolutely not. And Hunk wouldn’t breathea word of it, even if he was asked.
So, we all know that Hunk is ultimately the beacon of peaceand unity that the universe truly deserves. As Ari gets older, she seeks Hunkout for advice and suggestions on better ways to approach conflict-resolution.This is due to how some of her friends – outside of the other Palababus – like totalk smack instead of just dealing with disagreements in a more civil approach. While Ari can certainly understand that sometimes being a little petty can helppeople get over things, when the problems start causing rifts and involvingmore members of their group, she feels the need to intervene. Hunk, who wasalways the Voice of Reason on Team Voltron, he can sympathize with her. Whilehe didn’t have to deal with too much of that, he knows how it can be whenothers are using little things as an excuse to be mad and cause furthertrouble.
I see Shay as being a very affectionate and doting mother, and that extends to all the children of their friends as well. I really lovethe idea that Shay, Allura and Romelle get super invested in trashy daytime televisionprograms like Maury and Jerry Springer and such. There’s even spaceversions where different alien species go on and the trio love to watch andcommentate. The Allurance kids find the shows the most interesting, thoughthere is a level of entertainment in it for Morganite, Newt and Ari as well. Richter,Amber and Kaden tend to spend more time with her learning about the legends ofthe Balmera of crystals and how to distinguish which types of crystal are goodfor what purposes.
Richter gets along best with Amber and Kaden, and sees Kadenas a pseudo-little brother. The three of them grow up running in the samecircle and, even as they get older, remain close. When Amber’s still reallyyoung and bad at controlling her temper, Richter’s the best at getting her tocalm down. He’s also the one who deals with the petty squabbles between she andAlfor the most often. When the kids play pretend, they take it very seriously.Richter’s really good at constructing stuff out of cardboard and buildingblocks, so when they have tons of play-props that he and Kaden have built and coloredtogether.
Last note, he’s a pretty big boy who certain could defend himself, but he’s just agentle giant. There’s something really cute and funny about this really big, sweet guy being protected by these smol little firecrackers.
Now, Morganite is closer with Newt and Aria; especially sowith Newt. As I’ve mentioned, Newt’s a bit stand-offish with other people, butshe sees beyond all that to what a sweetheart he actually is. At one point, he thinksthat she’s only his friend because their parents are friends, but he realizesthat she genuinely does like him. This allows their friendship to develop evenfurther and the two of them to actually focus on the many things they have incommon. Consider them to be Team Punk Version 2.0. Lastly, I mentioned this inmy last headcanon post, but Morganite is really talented at making jewelry andother accessories. She teaches Ari how to make them, as well as helping herfigure out which accessories are best for this or that situation.
Lance and Allura
Let’s get the little notes about the McClain-Altean Heirs outof the way first! Lance and Allura end up having five kids; Alfor, Raya,Coriander, Paige and Anthony. Alfor and Raya are each a few months younger thanAmber and Kaden respectively, Coriander and Paige are a few months older thanNewt and Aria respectively, and Anthony is about two years younger than Aria. Ioriginally planned for them to have six kids, but decided to cut Anthony’s twinbrother, Ben, from the equation simply due to the fact it felt like too manykids. Additionally, since I started this before season 8 dropped, this isn’tnecessarily compliant with that; though, admittedly, it could easily just be aslight deviation where Allura saves the universe without having to sacrificeherself. But I think that we’re all mostly in agreement that that who spiel wasa little lacking, yeah?
Anyway, let’s get in to it!
I can’t talk about Lance and Amber’s relationship nearly asmuch as I want to. Initially, while Lance doesn’t hate her, he does get a bitmiffed by how she and Alfor always seem to be at odds with one another. As thekids get older, though, Lance starts to see a bit of his own struggles in Amberand becomes a pretty good source of reassurance for her. Amber clearly wants tobe someone who does great things for others, like her parents, but is unsure ifshe’ll ever have her chance to. She also worries that her abrasive personalitywould prevent her from being a very good source of comfort, even if she did getinvolved in any kind of work like that. Lance is able to help reassure herthat, so long as she’s willing to work hard and dedicate herself, she’ll beable to accomplish her goals.
Kaden goes in a bit of different direction than his sister;Kaden’s leaning towards being reserved but typically pretty polite, Lance hasno problem with him. He isn’t as aggressive as Amber can be in his issues withAlfor or Raya, and even when they do, the most that ever happens in the way ofphysicality is knocked over drinks or water fights. In regards to bonding,Lance actually offers him little tips and tricks to help him with his drivingduring his soap box races. I like the idea that Lance liked go-cart racing inhis youth so he knows a little bit about how to maneuver a smaller vehicle.Keith greatly appreciates this, as his own experiences prior to meeting Shiroand attending the Garrison is limited.
Lance actually teaches Newt a lot about farm animals. It’skind of implied by how Lance knew how to deal with Kaltenecker, and is apopular headcanon that I’m fond of, but I like the idea that he came from afamily in which his mother was a successful business owner and his father rantheir successful farm. As such, growing up, Lance had a lot of first-handexperience with the ins and outs of how to care for barnyard animals. Newtlatches on to him so he can learn all that he can about cows, horses, chickens, goats, and any other animals. While Lance doesn’t actively work on the farm anymore – what with now being one of the ruling monarchs of New Altea/ living alife as a Garrison recruiter on Earth – he has a lot of fond memories of hisexperiences caring for animals, as well as finding Newt’s passion to beendearing. He specifically regales him with the tales of his favorite animalthey ever owned, a goat named Hoppie, who would scream at you when he wanted atreat and had a bad habit of hopping fences; including a hilarious time hejumped into the pig’s pen and got coated in mud.
As for Ari, he probably likes her the best, simply becauseshe tends to be around the most due to her friendship with his daughters. Whenthey have sleepovers, he’ll often be brought in to help with braiding hair, doing facials, painting nails, etc. He also occasionally helps out with thechoreography, costuming and music for Ari’s YouTube videos; specifically, withthe music, he’ll help with the balancing of the audio and occasionally offerback-up vocals. We’ve already seen how well Lance can… Put on a show, to put itlightly, so he’s got a lot of creative ideas to help Ari catch attention. Pidgeis the one who tends to step in and rein him in if she thinks his ideas aregetting a little too salacious.
Now, what about our favorite Altean royal?
Allura gets along with Amber a bit better that Lance does, simply by virtue of seeing that her son needs someone to call him out. Sheloves her son to pieces – he is her first born and her baby in general – but sheacknowledges that he has inherited his father’s ego from their youth, whichmeans he needs to occasionally be reminded that he isn’t the greatest thingever. She doesn’t always agree with how she goes about it, and is happy tovoice her opinion, but also finds Amber’s interest and skill with fighting tobe admirable. She helps to teach her some Altean combat moves, along with herteaching them to her own kids as well, and admires what a quick study she is.
Now, her and Kaden actually bond over something kind ofinteresting; superhero comic books. Of all the Earth literature that she checksout, I think that Allura would find comics to be incredibly interesting. Thestories, the characters, the situations that cause them to gain their powers, all of it just kind of amuses her; both the campy stuff and the more seriousstuff. This hobby of hers is one that she ends up getting to spend a lot oftime bonding with Anthony, she and Lance’s youngest son, as well as Kaden.Kaden’s favorite characters end up being Spiderman, because he’s super smartbut super snarky, and Captain America, because he’s so moral. Allura’sfavorites are Thor – which is shared between she and Anthony – and Storm. Oneyear for Halloween, actually, the three of them all dressed up as their faveswhen they went trick-or-treating.
Newt, being intelligent and having some interests similar tohis Mama, talks with Allura a lot about how, exactly, she developed Shiro’sprosthetic, as well as how the Castle Ship worked. He also talks with Coranabout this, but he likes to talk with Allura about it a bit more since she wasthe one who made the ship able to jump through wormholes. He’s absolutelyfascinated by the idea of technology and magic being melded together to theextent that it was with the Alteans. Due to his lack of Altean heritage, he can’tdo anything involving alchemy, but he still finds the practice to be absolutelyfascinating and loves listening to Allura talk about everything she’s learnedfor hours on end. Additionally, Alfor is the only one of the Allurance babiesthat inherits any Altean alchemic ability, so Newt will often sit in whenAllura’s working with him just to see how, exactly, it’s done.
Much as I mentioned before, Ari in the Kidgeling thatprobably spends the most time around the Allurance babies because she gets alongso well with the girls. Much like with Lance, she’ll join in for slumberparties, but she also likes to take the girls out for mani-pedis. Pidge enjoysoccasionally going out for pampering, but she’s not nearly as big into thatstuff as Aria is, and Allura is always more than happy to bring Aria along.Pidge is grateful because she wants Ari to be able to enjoy herself in herinterests. This is also good for Allura, as she sees her friends and their kidsas her family, and loves getting to spend time with all of them. Allura is alsothe one that takes the girls clothes shopping at the start of each new schoolyear, since Pidge loathes having togo shopping.
Alfor and Amber’s relationship is completely complicated. They absolutely love each other and will shank someone for bad-mouthing them, but they’d also happily roast each other until they’re a well-barbequed chickenthigh. As kids, they constantly bicker and butt heads because they’re bothincredibly stubborn and have huge egos, but as they get older and become moretempered, they’re more like caddy frenemies. There is a point where theirfriendship almost implodes on itself, but that’s something I intend to touch upon my final headcanon post coming out soon. Alfor gets along pretty well withKaden and Newt, as well. With Kaden, he takes on an older brother role andoften tries to help give him love advice, because he considers himself to be areal Casanova like his Daddy even though he’s never asked out Akihiko, who he has a HUGE crush on. With Newt, he actually really likes how hesits and watches his alchemy training. Newt will take notes and, through thesenotes, Alfor can often figure out what he was getting wrong when he’sstruggling. Alfor likes Ari, but he sees her more as his sister’s friend, so hedoesn’t really hang out with her much.
Raya is the Queen Bee of the little Girl Gang that is formedby the Palababus. While she and Amber don’t really spend a lot of time hangingout in their youth, there’s a sense of mutual respect for one another, and theydo become closer as they get older and get to know one another better. In theiryounger years, she always tries to include Amber in their activities, butnormally the older girl isn’t too terribly interested. Raya and Kaden havedrastically different interests and tend to not get along at all – due to Rayahaving a “little princess” personality and Kaden finding this annoying – thoughthey do grow to admire one another and become significantly closer during theirlate teens, as mentioned before. She and Newt don’t really talk much; shethinks he’s kind of weird and he thinks she’s a spoiled brat. Aria is theKidgeling she gets along with the best and, as I’ve mentioned before, looksafter her just as much as she does her own sisters. She helps Aria with herYouTube music videos, as well as helping her work on her cheerleading routinesand preparing for try-outs.
Coriander, much like her older sister, isn’t very close toAmber but has some respect for the older girl; though, admittedly, she thinksAmber can go a little overboard when she sticks her nose into a fight. It mightbe a little bit of a crush, but she never acts or speaks of it to anyone, andit fades relatively quickly. She also respects Kaden a lot, given hisreputation of being the Bullier of the Bullies, but is also a bit intimidatedby him. Due to her own tendency towards being a sociable and outgoing character, she finds Kaden’s quiet personality to be a bit unnerving. With Newt, she goes tohim and Morganite for some help with her academics, as she struggles a bit withscience and geography classes. Lastly, as I know I’ve mentioned multiple timesnow, but Ari gets along best with the Allurance girls. Since Cori is such asocial, outgoing girl who likes the spotlight, she ends up becoming a hugetheater kid. She’s not the best at musicals but she loves getting to do regularshows, and Ari always helps her with her lines. In return, when they domusicals, she helps push Ari to audition, as well as practice her songs/ linesonce she gets cast.
So now we get to the youngest little lady, Paige! Unlike hersiblings, she lacks the outgoing personality. She’s really sweet and friendlywith her friends, sure, and she gets along well enough with others, but she isn’tquite as interested in expanding her social circle like they are. She’s notreally passionate about it, but she does join the swim and volleyball. Herinterest in volleyball isn’t particularly big – most just doing it because sheknows how helpful extracurriculars are for college applications and such – but Amberstill helps her get ready for the team tryouts. She’s grateful for this, especially since Amber doesn’t once chide her for signing up for something justby virtue of being signed up for something. Paige is ambivalent to both theboys, though she does think that Newt’s fascination with Altean alchemy isweird. She really enjoys writing poems and actually goes to Kaden for hisopinion, since he’s the bluntest and most straight-forward person she knows, soshe knows his criticisms will always be his honest opinion. She has a huge softspot in her for cheesy romantic comedies – even the ones with awful writing –and she’ll happily marathon them with Ari. Sometimes the two of them just enjoygetting settled in nice and comfy and having themselves a squeal-fest.
Last, but certainly not least, is little Anthony! Anthony isan absolute Momma’s boy who talks a big game but will back down pretty quickwhen he knows he’s about to get smacked down. Due to how much younger than theother kids he is, he doesn’t really know Amber and Kaden all that well; mostlyjust knows what the kids say about them. At one point, after finding out he’sbeen dealing with some jerks at school, Amber outright tells him to just useher and Kaden as a threat to any potential bullies, and he actually does and itseems like enough to dissuade them from pestering him too much more. He ends upactually joining the local scout’s troop and goes to Newt for helpful tips onwhat to expect from the wildlife they encounter. Through this, he grows toreally admire how much care and effort Newt puts into learning about the thingshe’s interested in, and decides to do the same. He gets really passionate aboutdoing little magic tricks and slight-of-hand things. Aria ends up agreeing tobe his partner when he participates in shows and charity events and such. Also, instead of pulling a rabbit from his hat, Auryon will occasionally let himborrow Boo and Radley and he pulls them from the hat.
Coran
Now, I see Coran as being significantly more invested in theAllurance babies, simply by virtue of him Palababus, too. These last few willprobably be a bit on the short side, but I hope it’ll still be good!
Coran loves getting to tell the children about everything hedid and saw throughout his many years of travel. He’ll often regale them with thetales of shenanigans that their parents, as well as the OG Team Voltron, got upto. Does he occasionally embellish the stories to make their parents seem alittle more imposing? Maybe. But the kids don’t even care and the parent’s coughLancecoughappreciate being seen as total badasses by their kids. Additionally, he teachesthem how to do all the strange, alien-animal calls that he knows just for thefun of it. None of the parents thank him for this; especially not Pidge andKeith, who end up getting the worst of it because of how much Newt loves making the strange noises.
Additionally, he ends up hitting it off particularly wellwith two of the Palababus through offering them more insights in to Voltron andhow the Lions work, but, again… Subject for later! ;3c
Romelle
She ends up becoming super in to video games and Eaeth boardgames; specifically I think she’d be really in to Sorry!, Monopoly and anyRPG games she can get her hands on. Her being into games makes her a favoritewith Kaden and Newt, who loves having little gaming tournaments. She’s kickedtheir tales at literally every game they have but they still enjoy getting toplay with her. She also loves teaching them the different games they playedback on the colony when she was a child. She teaches Amber some meditationtechniques to help her calm down and help rein in some of her violenttendencies. She also teaches Aria how to play some Altean instruments, including a strange tuba-accordian hybrid.
Additionally, she tells them cautionary tales about her lifeback on the colony and lies they believed about Lotor. The kids are aware thatLotor was a bad guy, but they don’t know the extent of it. She saves thosestories until they’re a little older, just to avoid causing them nightmares, but they take what she says to heart.
Kolivan
So, I have a lot of headcanons about Kolivan that I won’t begoing into great detail about right now, but I will state I think he has atleast one child of his own, but they have an estranged relationship. Betweenthis and how close he is with Keith and Krolia, when he opts to retire fromactive Blade assignments, he ends up settling on Earth and taking up Grandpa Privilegeswith the Kidgelings.
Much like with Krolia, he helps teach Amber and Kaden aboutself-defense techniques and other such things. He decides pretty early on thathe likes how the two contrast but complement one another, what with Amber beingan enthusiastic little spitfire and Kaden being a sneaky little tactician. Theymake for a good team and he can see that the two of them have greatness laidbefore them. With Newt, he really enjoys listening to him go on his ramblesabout the tech he’s working on; specifically, he likes when he goes on hisrambles about the prosthetic limbs he wants to develop for humans and animalswith missing limbs. He thinks it’s really cute how this snarky little bratactually has a very soft and compassionate heart underneath it all. With Aria,he really loves letting her play with his hair. Since it’s so long, she’ll sitfor hours and comb it out and then restyle it. Sometimes she does simplebraids, or twists it into a bun, or even busts out her curling iron and leaveshim with a cluster of bouncy silver curls. Sometimes they’ll talk while shedoes, and other times she’ll just put on music and they’ll let the quiet musicfill in the peaceful space.
Slav
Slav is literally only here for one hilarious footnote.
One week, for show-and-tell, Aria actually smuggled Slav toschool with her. At lunch, she swapped candies and lunch tray desserts forreadings of their possible futures from the alien genius. This led to a bunchof the children going in to complete panic and the school hadto call in Pidgeand Keith.
They’re both impressed with the fact their daughter managedto sneak Slav to school, as well as how she managed to carry around a backpackwith him inside for the entire day.

Dick Down December - A Kidge Fic
This is a ‘little’ something I threw together after another of mine and @piixiefawn ‘s long yet hilarious conversations!  This just touches on the tip of the iceberg of what we’ve been talking about recently, and hopefully, the rest will eventually see the light of day!
This is also partially based on one of our theories that Matt’s girlfriend is one he built himself, so bear that in mind!
Tumblr media
Matthew Holt was an asshole.  A genuine bonafide asshole.  Pidge could call him that, he was her brother, she loved him, but damn him, he was a complete and utter asshole.  He had been teasing her relentlessly for two days.  It was almost Christmas, their first back on Earth, and so help her if he didn’t shut up about mistletoe and Keith she was really going to let him have it and damn the consequences her mom would rain down on her.  Okay, so she and Keith were…what?  A thing?  She guessed that covered it.  They were definitely more than quiznak-buddies, but they were also very private.  As in no one knew they were a thing.  They wanted people to know they were a thing but for now they wanted it to be just theirs, with none of the nosey questions and sly looks she knew would accompany any announcement of their dating status.  And they had been on dates, they just weren’t touchy feely, other than in the bedroom, where they made up for it, big time.  Regardless of that, Matt was in trouble.
Pidge wanted to pick her moment, for an opportunity when there would be the most amount of people to hear, for more people to share in her triumph over her teasing older brother.  That opportunity presented itself in the mess hall at lunchtime.  She found herself seated on one of the long tables with Keith on her left and Hunk on her right, Shiro on his other side.  Matt was opposite Pidge, a smug grin on his face at her choice of seat, with Lance opposite Keith.  They all ate in silence for several minutes, Pidge thinking about what to do to take her revenge on Matt, all the while he grinned and winked at her, flicking his glance to Keith every now and then as though threatening to reveal her crush.  Griffin approached the table and nodded in greeting, sitting beside Matt and immediately tucking into his food.  Well, no time like the present.
‘Hey, Matt?’  Pidge asked nonchalantly as she poked at her food.  ‘Does Dick Down December count if you’re banging a robot?’
Matt’s eyes went wide as Griffin choked on his food, Pidge’s mouth splitting into a smile as she watched him swallow as the rest of the table looked between the two in confused amusement.  Matt’s mouth flapped a couple of times but before he could answer Lance spoke up.
‘I don’t know, Pidge, does it also count if you’re being dicked by a half galra?’
Matt’s shock turned to horror as he turned to Keith, finding his cheeks beginning to colour a deep red while Pidge jumped onto the bench seat, planning to throw herself at Lance, and she would have succeeded, had Hunk not grabbed her and pulled her back down.
‘Nicely done, Lance.’  Hunk stated, keeping his arm around Pidge as she fought to push it off.
‘Yeah, Lance.’  Pidge growled.
‘What, like it was a secret?’  Lance laughed then stopped as he took in the many glares aimed at him.  ‘Oh come on, you guys are so loud the entire garrison knows you go at it like bunnies every night!’
Matt lurched across the table, only to have his collar grabbed by his father who had been approaching to join them.  ‘Matt, leave it.’  Sam said firmly as Keith got to his feet.
‘It’s not what you think!’  Keith said defensively but standing his ground all the same.
‘Not what I think?’  Matt yelled.  ‘I think you’re sleeping with my little sister!  That’s not okay!’
‘Don’t start.’  Pidge shot him a glare before directing it back on Lance.  ‘And don’t think I’ve forgotten about you!’  She waved her finger at him threateningly.
Matt shrugged off his father’s grip.  ‘I won’t have him using you like that!  You deserve better than…’
‘Better than what?’  Keith leant on the table with his hands, angry at Matt’s insinuation.
‘You better watch your mouth, Matt.’  Pidge said warningly.
‘I won’t watch anything.’  Matt continued.
‘Son…’  Sam cautioned.
‘No, Dad, how are you not mad about this?’  Matt couldn’t tear his eyes off Keith as he spoke, the tension from the table palpable enough that the entire mess hall had silenced.  ‘About what he’s doing to Katie?’
‘I’m not doing anything to her she hasn’t consented to!’  Keith growled, the sound lasting long after he finished speaking, and Pidge’s head shot around to look at him, knowing the signs he was now exhibiting and what they meant.  ‘You’re insinuating I’m taking advantage of her.  I don’t like that.’
‘Keith…’  Pidge finally shrugged Hunk off and got to her feet, leaning forward just enough to see Keith’s face, to recognise the tension and that his eyes had gone, for want of a better word, wild.  He was exhibiting his galra side, something she had seen and wasn’t afraid of, but she didn’t want him to unleash it just now.
‘She’s young and impressionable, you are taking advantage of her trust in you!’
Keith shifted as though to pounce, but Pidge put herself in front of him, pulling his gaze down to hers with her fingers in his hair.  ‘Keith, calm down, you don’t want to do this, not here, not like this.’
‘He needs to eat his words.’  Keith snarled.
‘He will, but not by you force feeding them!’  She said sharply, finally getting his attention.  ‘Let’s get out of here.’
‘He owes you, and me, an apology.’  Keith spat, even as he allowed Pidge to take his hand and draw him away from the table.
‘And he’ll make one, but not until we all calm the fuck down.’
‘You know the best way for me to do that.’  Keith stated.
‘Yeah, I do.’  She smiled, mostly to herself, but Matt heard, and it did the complete opposite of calming him.
Vaulting over the table he tackled Keith sideways, pulling his hand from Pidge’s as they rolled to their feet.  In seconds they were grappling and throwing punches, Shiro, Sam, and Hunk rushing to them immediately, Lance and Griffin a moment later, but Pidge was nearer, and Pidge wasn’t stupid…most of the time.  Now wasn’t one of them.  Before anyone else reached them she had thrown herself onto Matt’s back, clinging on with her arms and legs around him, yelling at them both to cut it out.
Shiro and Sam shared a look before nodding knowing they had to break thing up, and that while Matt was the one truly enraged, Keith was the greater threat, both stronger and better trained.  Shiro quickly doled out orders; Lance was to help Sam; Hunk and Griffin were to help him with Keith; and they would hopefully break it up before anyone got hurt.
Shiro led with his right arm as Sam and Lance grabbed for Matt.  Keith shook off Shiro’s grip easily, despite it being his artificial arm, swinging his fist towards Matt again the other man lurched enough to throw off both is father and Lance.  Pidge grunted at being thrown around, Matt barely registering her weight on his back.  She remembered a time, when they were younger, that she had been able to tackle him over, when they would surprise one another with tickle fights, or just trying to steal the TV remote from one another, and she realised his time with the rebels had made a world of difference to him.  He was stronger, certainly not Keith strong, but muscles she hadn’t expected to find coiled under her and she realised he wasn’t going to be so easy to take down after all.  She needed to change tactics.  She planted her foot against his thigh and pushed herself up, hoping to drop between them, knowing neither one would hurt her on purpose.  Which was a big mistake.
No one saw who landed the blow, but when Pidge suddenly dropped back and away from the fight it was obvious something had happened.  She groaned as she tried to push herself up with her arms, Matt and Keith freezing instantly as they realised she was hurt.  Each one dropped down beside her as she sat up, pressing her hand to her nose as she winced.
‘Babe, let me see.’  Keith said, as Matt asked; ‘Pidge, you okay?’
‘You’re both assholes.’  She groaned as she removed her hand, her eyes watering from the impact, and she glanced down as both men sucked in air through their teeth.  Seeing the blood she wasn’t surprised.  She wiped her hand on her pants and forced herself to her feet, shrugging off their hands as they tried to help her.  ‘Leave me alone, I’m fine.’
‘Are you done?’  Shiro demanded, looking between them, both men looking sheepish as Pidge continued to wipe at her face.
‘I’m done.’  Keith said.
‘Me too.  Sorry, Shiro.’  Matt rubbed the back of his neck as Sam took Pidge by the cheeks to check her nose.
‘I don’t think it’s broken.’  He assured her as he tilted her head.  ‘All the same we’ll get you some ice.  Do you have things under control here, Shiro?’
‘Leave it to me.’  Shiro folded his arms and gave the two men a stern look as Sam began to lead Pidge away.
‘I want the two of you in my office in half an hour.’  Sam glanced back at them.  ‘No excuses.’
‘Yes, sir.’  Keith shifted almost to attention while Matt’s expression grew more worried.
‘Show’s over!’  Shiro called to the room in general and although everyone returned to what they had been doing there was no doubt that they were still cautiously gawking at the scene.  ‘Now, the two of you are going to clear up the mess you made before you go to Commander Holt’s office, and I expect no trouble, do you hear me?’
‘Yes, sir.’  Keith and Matt replied as one, Lance and Hunk looking between them before returning to their seats.
Half an hour later and the two of them approached the door to Commander Holt’s office, neither one having spoken about the incident either to each other or anyone else.  They both knew it was unacceptable behaviour and the fact it had happened in front of the entire mess hall made matters worse.
Keith raised his hand and knocked, the door opening a moment later to reveal Pidge was already there, seated in the middle of three seats opposite the desk, behind which sat not only Sam but Colleen Holt.
‘Oh shit.’  Matt murmured under his breath before going in and standing before one of the two chairs, Keith before the other.
‘Take a seat, both of you.’  Sam indicated for them to do so, each of them turning to look at Pidge now they were level.
She looked between them, eyes like thunder.  Her nose was red, her eyes were puffy and already darkening beneath in the starting of a bruise, and dried blood marked the edge of one nostril.
‘Are you okay?’  They asked almost simultaneously and she directed her gaze back to her parents.
‘Don’t talk to me.’  She grumbled.
‘Babe…’  Keith tried but she ignored him.
‘Before we start,’ Colleen said, her tone reminiscent of Pidge’s own, tinged with anger and no nonsense, ‘is there anything the two of you would like to say in your defence?’
‘Not exactly in my defence,’ Keith began, ‘but I do have something I’d like to say.’
‘Go ahead.’  Sam nodded.
‘I want to say I’m sorry, not just as a member of the garrison but as a friend and Pidge’s boyfriend.  It shouldn’t have got that far.  I shouldn’t have allowed it to get that far.  I fully accept the blame for what happened.’
‘That’s very big of you, Keith.’  Colleen replied.  ‘And none of you should have let it get that far.’
‘And as far as we’re concerned Katie has already admitted blame for starting it.’  Sam added.
‘But…’  Matt tried, but Sam held up his hand.
‘It wasn’t her intention for it to become physical, but she admitted to wanting to tease you, Matthew.  True, the fight was purely down to the two of you, but without her provocation it wouldn’t have happened.’
‘It wasn’t Pidge’s fault.  Things got out of hand.  Sir.’  Keith added as an afterthought.  ‘It’s not fair that she should take the full blame.’
‘I didn’t say that she was taking the full blame, but I’m glad you stood up for her.  Hers is the blame for starting things.  The two of you are to blame for it getting quite so ridiculously out of hand.’
‘Do you have any idea what the fight was about?’  Matt demanded, wondering if his parents had any clue of just what was going on.
‘It doesn’t matter what it was about,’ Colleen told him, ‘it was unprofessional and irresponsible.  I expect better, from both of you.’
‘He’s sleeping with Pidge!’  Matt announced, hoping it would get them to realise it wasn’t a small matter.  ‘He can’t just go around doing…her!’
Pidge started to facepalm then thought better of putting her hand anywhere near her sore face.  ‘Matt, don’t be an asshole.’
‘He can’t!’  Matt glared down at her.
‘It’s consensual, dumbass, it’s perfectly fine.’
‘Is that what Mom and Dad think?’
‘She’s right, it is perfectly fine.’  Colleen said as Keith tried to take Pidge’s hand, only to have her move it away.
Matt’s jaw fell open.  ‘You heard what I said, right?’
‘We heard.’  Sam nodded.  ‘And it’s okay.  Keith and Katie came to us several months ago and asked for our blessing.’
‘Months?’  Matt yelped.  ‘It’s been going on for months?’
‘But we didn’t want a big fuss made so we asked to keep it between ourselves until we were ready.’  Pidge gave him a sideways glance.  ‘I don’t think either of us realised Lance knew.’
‘His room is right beside mine.’  Keith said offhandedly.
‘No.  No, no, no, I’m not hearing this!’  Matt shook his head.  ‘You can’t just do this, even if you asked them, you didn’t ask me!’
‘You’re my brother, not my…whatever else might need permission!’  Pidge snapped, having had enough of the entire situation.  ‘I don’t know what the problem is, whether it’s because it’s Keith, or because you don’t seem to have realised that I’m actually an adult, or some other reason, but I’m tired of your teasing!  You started it, I just finished it in a bigger way than I expected.’  She slid down in her chair until most of her lower body was off it, arms folded, in what could only be described as out of sheer frustration.
Matt opened his mouth to speak again but Sam silenced him.  ‘That’s enough, Matt, Katie is right.  She’s a woman now and we have to accept her decisions, and I know you like and respect Keith.  If you want to discuss this then we will do so like adults.  But not before we discuss your punishment.’
All three of them inwardly groaned and Pidge pushed herself back up in the chair to sit up and take whatever was coming.
‘We’ll take whatever you wish to dole out, Commander Holt, we need to set a good example.’  Keith assured them.
‘Good.  Katie, you will be helping with the grade one cadets, assisting the science teacher anyway they see fit.’
‘But Dad, I hate the science teachers!  They never listen to what I…’
‘You’re there as an assistant.’  Colleen stared her daughter down.  ‘You aren’t teaching and you aren’t to interrupt.  You beat erasers if they need it doing!  Your job will be to do as you’re told.  Do you understand, young lady?’
‘Yes, Mom.’  Pidge replied solemnly.
‘And as for the two of you.’  Sam looked between the two men.  ‘The punishment for fighting is a month of detention, but given your heroic status we will be lenient.’
Keith let out a breath he hadn’t realised he was holding but Matt wasn’t so ready to think they had got off lightly.  His parents were creative when it came to punishment.
‘You will spend a month working behind the scenes in the mess hall, doing some good old fashioned grunt work to remind you of how important it is that we all work together to make all of the garrison a well oiled machine.  If you start to disrupt just one area, especially with rash actions, then the machine will break down.  The two of you need to start to rebuild that which you broke by showing you can work together.’
‘Yes, sir.’  Keith bowed his head and Pidge’s hand finally reached for his, offering him a small smile as he finally gave it a reassuring squeeze.
‘And it won’t end there.  You will be working together to strip down some of the old engine parts for recycling, cleaning and testing each one.’
‘But Dad, that’s grunt work!’  Matt complained, knowing it was one of the least desirable jobs in the entire garrison.
‘And until the two of you remember how to act like the officers you are then you are grunts, both of you.’  Colleen snapped.  ‘Behave yourselves and set a better example.  You’re war heroes, not opposing gang members!’
‘Yes, ma’am.’  Keith said quickly.
‘Anything to add, Matthew?’
‘No, Mom.  I mean, yeah.  Sorry.’  Matt shifted in his seat awkwardly.
‘Me too.’  Pidge added.  ‘But if he hadn’t been teasing me in the first place then I wouldn’t have tried to get him back.’
‘Enough teasing, both of you.  You’re not kids any more.’  Sam groaned, sounding as though he had had his fair share of punishing them for that very thing over the years.
‘Alright.’  Pidge nodded, hating to agree to it before Matt but wanting to be the bigger sibling, the one who extended the olive branch first.  If he didn’t take it she could always beat him with it later.
‘Yeah, okay.’  Matt said somewhat reluctantly.
‘Good.  Now you just have to apologise to one another.’  Colleen said as she got to her feet, closely followed by Sam.  ‘We’ll give you some privacy for that.’
The door closed behind them and Pidge huffed out a breath.  ‘Who wants to start?’
‘I’ll start.’  Keith stood and offered his hand.  ‘We should have told you about us and I’m sorry you had to find out the way you did, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to stop seeing one another.  I love Katie, that’s how it is.’
Matt got to his feet, narrowing his eyes at the other man.  ‘Wait, you love her?’
‘Yeah,’ Keith smiled down at Pidge, who looked smug yet embarrassed at the same time, ‘I do.’
‘You think after as long as we’ve known each other we’d really just be a fling?’  Pidge asked.
‘I…don’t know.’  Matt admitted, taking Keith’s still outstretched hand.  ‘But I hadn’t even considered that…you know what, never mind, just don’t give me too much information.  Ever.’
‘I don’t think that will be a problem.’  Pidge finally joined them in standing and it allowed them both to get a proper look at the bruising and swelling on her face.
‘I know we don’t know who did it, but I’m sorry you got hit.’  Keith caressed her cheek with his palm and she fought not to wince.
‘Me too.’
‘Me three.’  Matt added, resting a hand on her shoulder.  ‘I guess we deserved the punishment though, right?’
‘You guys maybe.’  Pidge touched at her nose gingerly, even the small touch making her eyes begin to water.  ‘With your stupid testosterone.  I think I suffered enough.’
‘You’re the one who accused me of sleeping with a sexbot!’
‘You’ve been teasing me about Keith for weeks!’
‘You kept your relationship with him secret or I wouldn’t have!’
‘Okay, enough!’  Keith raised his voice over their bickering.  ‘This is the thing that got us into trouble in the first place!’
‘Right.’  Matt muttered.  ‘Can we all at least agree no more secrets?  Not big ones like this?’
Pidge sighed but Keith answered.  ‘Sure.’
‘You know, out of everyone you could have picked out of the entire garrison, Keith’s the one I would have picked for you?’
‘I didn’t know that.’  Pidge frowned up at him.  ‘If that’s the case why were you always riding me about kissing him?  You know I always do the opposite of what I’m told.’
‘I hoped just this once it might give you a push.’  Matt shrugged, slinging his arm around her shoulders.  ‘And to celebrate the fact, once our punishment is done, I’m taking us all out for burgers.’
‘Triple deckers and sides thrown in.’
‘You got it.’
Pidge stormed through the corridor to the upper level of the hangar, Colleen and Sam close on her heels.  It had been six weeks since the incident in the canteen and two weeks since their punishment ended, but it was still causing her problems.
‘Katie, what are we doing down here?’  Sam called after her as she reached the door to the upper gantry where she stopped and held it open for them.
‘Just go out there and take a look.’  She said insistently, her face a mixture of frustration and anger.
‘What are we looking for?’  Colleen asked, shooting her daughter a glance as she passed.
‘You won’t need me to point it out, trust me.’  She let go of the door and approached the railing, pointing at the very back corner where the large metal cages of old parts for testing remained and there, in the middle of it all, were Keith and Matt, wearing dirty coveralls and goggles, welding a part onto what seemed to be a chassis of some kind.
‘Their punishment was over two weeks ago.’  Colleen murmured.  ‘Why are they still at it?’
‘Because they BONDED!’  Pidge threw her arms in the air.  ‘They’ve turned it into a project and are trying to build a high speed, lightweight two person transporter with stealth capabilities for scouting!’
‘That sounds like a great use of the scrap parts.’  Sam gave her a confused look.  ‘What’s the problem?’
‘The problem is that’s all they’re doing!’  She whined.  ‘I haven’t seen either of them properly for weeks!  They just do this!’
‘We wanted them to get along better.  I’d say the punishment worked.’  Colleen replied proudly.
‘Well, I want my boyfriend and brother back!’  Pidge demanded, just as the sound of laughter erupted from the two men who had turned off the welding torch and were high fiving one another.  ‘Get a room!’  She yelled before storming back out of the hanger.
‘What’s her problem?’  Matt asked and Keith shrugged and shook his head.
‘No clue.’
‘Oh well.  Want to take this baby for a spin?’
‘You bet!’
Colleen and Sam watched as they started the engine on the still crude contraption, a dull rumble echoing through the hangar.  ‘I think Pidge was right.’  Colleen said as she leant towards her husband.  ‘We may have created a monster.’

Voltron Fic Recommendations
Unsurprisingly, I’ve hooked my attention onto a new fandom of space gays, and boy oh boy has this series turned up some phenomenal stories.
Back With A Madness (Champion) by Mytay (Keith/Lance, Shiro/Matt -- Action/Adventure)
Lance gets himself mixed up in an underground fight club tournament in a bid to protect a local family and one by one draws the rest of the team into the fray, leading to extensive anxiety, battle practice, espionage and rigging, and way too many cryopod visits for a growing boy.
Has the most unique romantic confession scene I’ve ever seen in fanfiction, a healthy heaping of platonic affection between all characters, fun OCs, and an intreguing subplot involving Shiro and a clone.
The Dreaming Dark by Pterodotyl (Keith/Lance -- Thriller/Adventure)
The Garrison Trio comprise a deep sea explorative team tasked with diving 14,000 metres into the Kraydah Trench in search of answers as to what happened to the Kerberos Mission, and in doing so discover something a little more... monsterous.
By far the most well-researched story I have ever read. The author is a sweetheart and crafts amazingly cinematic scenes, and there’s a curious political subplot simmering in the background. The character interactions are gold, and things shift between fine and terrible so quick you can’t put the fic down. Lance has the voice of a chipmunk for two chapters. A close second on my Coolest Story Ever list.
Goodnight, Travel Well by Europa_report (Keith/Lance, Shiro/Allura -- Horror/Thriller)
The team discover a silent planet with a terrifying history, and awaken something with a very deep-seated grudge. Caught in a 400 day countdown until certain doom and with their leader missing, the paladins are stuck desperately searching for a way to defeat all-encompassing evil while handling undead invaders, an ancient curse, uncontrollable wormholing, and a baby.
Witty, wildly inventive, harrowing and so absolutely endearing in the character affection department that each new chapter makes me cry at least once. Tops my Coolest Story Ever list for its absolute complexity and complete deviation from the fanfiction norm. Cinematic to a fault. Heartbreakingly romantic and sweat-inducing terrifying. This is not a fic to pass by.
Ghost of The Future and Shadow of The Past by Wittyy_name and Zizzani (Keith/Lance -- Adventure/Romance)
In a freak ancient tech accident, Lance is launched exactly a year back in time... and his past self is launched a year forward. These two fics run concurrently, and between all the avoidance of “spoilers” by each team and the standard run of missions with one very out of place paladin, it becomes very obvious that doing the time warp is not good for a person, especially when you do it again.
I’m a sucker for loop distortion anyway, but these two stories really stretch the concept by creating two parallel event sequences that effect each other in real time. The romance is heavy, the paradoxes mind-bending, and the these fics get bonus points for being the final push I needed to start learning Spanish.
Homesick At Space Camp by Kobot (Keith/Lance -- Drama/Romance)
After realizing that Lance’s antagonism has been keeping Keith from really connecting with the team, he makes it his solemn duty to be the Best Possible Teammate, even if that means sticking his foot halfway down his throat and roping them into pretending to be lovers for the sake of avoiding Keith’s engagement to an alien.
Absolutely hilarious chapter titles, solid characterization, and a play on the fake relationship trope that’s quite grounded and realistic. Charming and sweet. Lots of dancing, an epic final battle worthy of the Jak series, and an exceptional butt-ton of all over gay.
Nothing’s Quite As Sweet by Dimpleforyourthoughts (Keith/Lance, Shiro/Allura -- Drama/Romance)
Keith works at a the world’s worst cafe due to debt and a simple lack of anything going on in his life; Lance works four different jobs and also across the street. Cats ensue.
Honestly this is the perfect coffee shop AU, no challenge. Have you been having a shitty day? Do you like soft non-sexual romance stories? Are you the opposite of a dog person? Look no further. Side effects include great need to snugglebum it up with gourmet lattes and overwhelming sense of hope for your own potential to change someone’s world.
Never Saw You Coming by Dimpleforyourthoughts (Keith/Lance -- Biography/Drama)
Keith has always been ready to run, to reach the stars, and to die, more or less in that order. Lance Fucking McClain repeatedly throws wrenches into all three of those ideas.
Repeat contender DFYT is back again because my dudes I couldn’t show you the soft fic without its bookender. Part Keith exposition and part romance story, this one is heartaching to a fault and pulls no punches. The rough and tumble idiot boys in love poem you’ve been hunting for.
Hearts Don’t Break Around Here by Klancekorner (Keith/Lance -- Drama/Romance)
They’ve been wheeling around each other since first grade, always with one foot in the other’s orbit, no matter the fights or fears or losses. Keith realizes he’s fallen in the same way the moon would if it arced too close to the Earth -- quickly, irreparably, and ending in disaster.
This seems to be an AU that already has a reputation, and for good reason. The song I Found by Amber Run encapsulates its core emotion, by which I mean the scenes are well-suited to a prime-time YA drama, and that at its heart this fic is daringly romantic. The author builds characters from the ground up and fleshes them out so fully that they might as well have called the entire cast OCs with canon name tags. I got weepy, I admit it.
The Purity of Sin by IcyPanther (Platonic Keith/Lance -- Action/Drama)
Being kept away from their lions and trapped on a hostile desert planet of short, angry cat-people would be difficult enough had they not gotten Lance wrapped up in sacrificial cult magic with a three day countdown. Thankfully, Keith is nothing if not determined to keep them both alive, no matter the cost or consequences.
Talk about a whump fic, but one with some solid worldbuilding, good characterization, and a satisfying, fit-for-TV climax. Great for those times you want affection and care between your characters but none of the romance. Allura cosplays as a cat.

When to Give (More)
A day late but!!!! Here with my piece for the @klancepoetryexchange, I have a fic inspired by A Question by Robert Frost, for @kittymeow321. It’s been a pleasure creating for this event, and I hope you enjoy!
A voice said, Look me in the stars
And tell me truly, men of earth,
If all the soul-and-body scars
Were not too much to pay for birth.
tw: heavy mention of self sacrifice and near death experiences
Lance and Keith have a nasty little habit of throwing themselves in harm’s way. They have a habit of gritting their eyes and shoving a teammate away to take the blow meant for them, and as those wounds have come to turn stretches of skin into leathery scars, they smile anyway because their team is safe.
Veronica comments on it, seeing her brother heading for the beach on a rare day off after evicting the Galra from Earth. His back is a mottled, pale mess. “Hermano,” she hisses, pulling him aside when his team isn’t watching. They all have scars, faint little nicks and tallies of days they’ve lived to tell the tale of their victory, but none like that. “What’s your back from? Why didn’t you tell any of us about it?” He’d had time, certainly, more than enough time in the hospital after he nearly died yet again.
Lance merely shrugs. “Coran was going to get hurt. I had to do something about it,” he tells her in that simple way of his, head snapping back around to stare at Pidge as she cackles something crude from the waves. Veronica watches him go, teeth gritted together and brow furrowed in concern because she can’t help but feel like she’s just missed something important. She knows just as well as anybody about the merits of sacrificing for the team, but there’s a fault lying in Lance’s shiny flash of a grin—a grin that, if she remembers correctly, used to be brighter—as he runs to tackle his teammate into the surf. Try as she might, Veronica can’t seem to find it and is left with nothing but the memory of her brother without a lion, ready to meet his maker.
Krolia pretends that she doesn’t notice, is completely oblivious to the way her son’s fingers are too tight—strained—around the controls of his fighter. There is a fear there she’s yet to uncover, and attempts to do so with subtle prods at his team, as her status as a Blade leaves her prone to do. She is met only with the occasional confused stare or bewildered silence over the comms, that she knows they chalk up to her not knowing their patterns as a team. She does not divulge that she has spent her every waking moment memorizing the people who she will inevitably have to entrust Keith to, being sure to correct any flaws she sees in her eagerness to remedy the cracks running through them.
In the cave, with her leader, she smiles at him and lets their time together keep her from shedding a single, undignified tear until they’re far away and Kolivan is fast asleep. Even with all that Keith has grown, she knows there are gaps in him that she’s unable to fill. She merely hopes that someone, anyone, can. If not, she hopes they can keep them from growing wider.
And Lance should be able to.
Keith, as leader, has tried very hard to know his team. To read when they can carry out a mission without a hitch, and when they’re seconds away from falling down a hole far too treacherous for Keith to dig them back out of.
Lance, in particular, he’s kept his eye on. He asks him on Earth, once, if everything’s alright. There’s good reason for the question; when Lance thinks nobody’s watching, his face will fall and his nails dig into his palms with force just shy of enough to draw blood. Lance snaps back to normal with blinding speed. Keith can only blink in surprise as Lance nods. “Course. You know me, mullet, ready for anything the universe decides to throw at us.”
When Keith isn’t happy, he shows it. He closes himself off and uses everything he has to scream comfort away. Usually, it works, with the exception of Shiro. Lance, on the other hand, is a clam with a pearl of hurt he’s desperate to hide, and every time Keith comes knocking, he closes up even tighter. He nods, pretending that Lance has him fooled. “As long as you’re good,” he says casually, and when they talk about their strategy for their next mission, doesn’t make mention of the tightness of Lance’s eyes. In turn, Lance doesn’t mention what Matt confessed to him once, after everybody else had long gone to bed and the two of them were left around the table, reeling from Nacxela.
“Keith, he—he was going to give himself up. He was ready, Lance. If Lotor hadn’t—” Matt had shaken his head. “We’d be down one more man in the fight.”
Lance had lain awake in his bed then, staring up at the ceiling and wondering why, when he thought of making the same sacrifice as Keith, he didn’t mind it so much on him. When had he stopped caring?
Lance hopes, sincerely hopes, that Keith wouldn’t do that again, but he never brings it up again because how can he? He’s such a hypocrite, really.
Keith can only ask himself the same.
One might think they’d break individually. A chip here, a crack there. When one blow after another meant for someone else turns into nightmares that aren’t calmed as easily as they used to be. It’s almost cruel in its irony though, how in sync they’ve always been. Tit for tat, them.
They’re back out in the universe, answering the distress signal of a planet a good few systems away when it happens. An explosion rocks the lions, sends the both of them down for a good few minutes.
They come to eventually, and the battle is hard won.
For Lance, there’s the memory of something almost like a friend floating in front of them, and then searing blackness that ends days later as he stumbles out of a pod. For Keith, there’s the weight of a thousand cuts when all he wants is Shiro.
They meet that night.
Both of them are fresh out of the Garrison med bay, skin like ash and the taste of what had almost been flaky in their mouths. It’s almost eery, the way Lance’s hand slots into Keith’s like it’s the most natural thing in the world, and yet there’s no emotion accompanying the action. It’s all empty, meaningless.
They walk to Lance’s room, sit on his floor and stare at each other, a thousand unsaid almosts hanging between them.
“I can’t do this,” Keith whispers first. Lance—never still, never motionless—has his fingers drumming lightly on his thigh.
“Yeah?” he murmurs. The utterance is neither approval nor condemnation.
It’s a nice thing that Keith can’t be bothered asking for either. He doesn’t even respond.
“You never realize how close death is until it won’t leave you alone. I thought I was okay with that, as long as everyone was safe.” Lance sighs. His fingers haven’t stopped moving. A pause. “You think we’d be better at this whole heart to heart thing. I mean, it’s not like we’re hiding how hard it is to care when you think you’re helping the team.”
Keith huffs a laugh that smacks of fire and their fellow paladins screaming through the comms. A beat.
“What do you think the Garrison will say?”
It’s like that, drained and so fucking tired of the constant fear and wondering which goodbye will be the last, that Keith doesn’t even have to ask for him to clarify. “They’ll be mad. Yell at us about it.”
Lance nods.
It’s so weird, how not caring turns into the only thing that matters being the not caring, and then everything starts to matter so much. It’s so weird how death gets a wave and a slap on the back when it passes by, but when it arrives with purpose, that’s something to fear.
“Haven’t we done enough yet?” Lance asks, standing like the conversation’s over now that the unsaid decision is mostly said. He takes his shirt off and strips down to his boxers, not bothering with any of his skincare as he crosses to the bed and rubs his hands over his eyes.
Keith follows his lead but keeps his top on. Lance holds up the covers for him to slip under.
It’s not the first time they’ve done this, exactly, but before it’s always been with a kiss and some kind of lightness between them. Holding onto each other’s shoulders as the lights flick off just feels like it’s all there’s left to do now.
The discussion doesn’t stop. “It’ll never be enough. There’s always another battle to fight,” Keith responds, voice lacking inflection.
Lance nods. “Wanna’ ignore the alarm?”
Keith shrugs. “Shiro’ll be mad.”
Before, that might’ve meant no. Lance sighs, closing his eyes and ignoring the tickle of Keith’s hair on his cheek. It’s gotten shaggier since being with Krolia. Keith thinks of what his mother would say should she know that he has so little left to give now.
“I’m glad you’re with me tonight,” Lance says. Keith smiles from above his head. There’s a little flicker of love in that, but to feel it in full force is too exhausting. A little love is good. Between the two of them, a little means there’s at least some semblance of realization when it’s too much. That’s important to them right now.
“Me too,” Keith responds.
They’re tired, and the sound of their heartbeats together is a perfect lullaby. Tomorrow will be a beast, surely, telling the Garrison that they can’t keep going, that they need a break. Just for now though, in the space between heartbeats, it’s okay to pretend like nothing is waiting for them in the morning.

Once Bitten, Twice Stupid prt.58
Lance left him hanging until the weekend to wake up properly. His boyfriend had woken sporadically over the last few days, only really long enough to express his relief that Keith was okay, then fall back to sleep. His external wounds had healed within the first 48 hours, all of them breathing easier for it. Coran had said Lance would wake when he felt, probably run down emotionally from Miriam being ill and neglecting himself because he worried too much for other. Matt’s wounds took about the same time, the bottom of his face swollen and bruised, teeth missing and a few hair line fractures in his lower jaw. Matt had tried talking to Pidge, but she wasn’t ready. Keith had more luck talking to Hunk, who’d called demanding to know why Pidge wasn’t making sense and what had had happened to Lance. Telling him there’s been an accident in the tunnels and that both Matt and Lance had been hurt, Hunk demanded answer, Shiro plucking the phone from his hold, and reassuring Hunk on the way to Platt to get them both looked at, before hanging up. Keith had tried messaging group chat to say both Matt and Lance were okay, but had gotten no reply. He couldn’t help but empathise with Pidge, probably understanding her feelings better than everyone right about now. He wanted to reach out, but was scared of the rejection he might face.
While Lance had slept, Keith had done everything he was suppose to. Eaten. Showered. Slept. Trained. Training helped him vent his anger. He wasn’t even sure who he was angry at any more. Kosmo was eager to follow him everywhere he went, Blue preferring to stay with her human, curled up on Lance’s chest except for the times the door opened and closed. Keith didn’t understand cats with doors. They knew what was on the other side, but every time a door opened they seemed curious as if seeing it all again for the first time. Keith didn’t have the time to be curious... despite being on a whole new floor at Voltron. It made sense there was more to the place than what he could see, but now they were further under ground, Coran having his access card over the elevator panel, bringing up a whole panel of underground levels. They were using rooms normally reserved for hunter. Keith and Lance sharing a room, Curtis had his old room back, Shiro between VOLTRON and their apartment, with Matt and Rieva returning to Garrison. They were all worried about Lance, but things needed to be done. Plus Matt was majorly depressed overly hurting Lance, Coran suggesting he visit once Lance woke so they could talk. The incident in the tunnels had to be reported, Coran had promised he’d take any all blame “for the blunder”.
It was some ungodly hour Saturday morning that Lance woke. Keith wasn’t sleeping, instead he was playing with his camera, brought by Shiro to distract him. Kosmo sleeping curled up against his side after a hard day of being adorable. When his boyfriend spoke, Keith nearly jumped out of his skin
“Hey there, come here often?”
Fumbling his camera, Keith rushed out of his bed and to Lance’s. There were two singles in the room, not quite able to fit two fully grown men when Keith was paranoid about hurting Lance in his sleep. Catching an armful of him, Lance held him tightly
“I see I was missed”
“You fucking idiot. You had me worried”
“I know... God, that hurt. Are you still okay? I know I was out of it, but you didn’t get hurt, did you?”
Keith deflated a little, this was how their brief conversations had been going
“I’m okay. Shit hit the fan, but I’m okay”
Lance nuzzled into his chest, poor Blue was now stuck between Lance and the wall thanks to Keith
“Good. I would have to punch you in the dick if you weren’t”
“You wouldn’t”
“No. I feel like I’ve slept for a month”
“Only since Tuesday”
“What’s today?”
“Saturday”
Lance groaned, his boyfriend trying to sit up while simultaneously not let him go. Keith moved to be less in Lance’s lap, Lance nearly squashing Blue as he pulled himself up to sit. Blue jumping on Lance’s shoulder before bolting off the bed
“Fuck... hold on... fuck...”
Keith wasn’t going anywhere. Lance’s words falling time with Blue’s leaps. Sitting back against the wall, Lance covered his mouth as he yawned. This was the most progress he’d made in days
“Babe? You okay? You had a huge shock to the system
Lance slid his hands up, rubbing at his eyes before sliding his hands back down to cover his cheek and nose
“Please tell me I didn’t bite you and tell me I don’t remember Pidge being there”
It’d be nice if Lance didn’t remember. He’d barely woken up and there he was making more sense than he should
“I’m sorry”
Keith didn’t know what to do other than apologise. He’d messed up... Lance swearing softly
“Babe. It’s okay...”
It wasn’t okay, because this was Pidge
“Is she okay? Have you heard from her?”
“Not really. Matt tried to talk to her, but she didn’t want to talk. She talked to Hunk, and Hunk was kind of freaking out...”
“Fuck... God... I didn’t want to her find out. What did you guys tell her?”
“I said there was an incident in the tunnels...”
“Couldn’t you have lied and said a prank gone wrong?”
That would have been the smart people’s approach to things. His brain unfortunately decided he need to try and tell the truth because he cared about Pidge and Hunk. Lowering his gaze, he mumbled
“Rieva turned too...”
Lance started to draw his knees up. Keith tearing up. He’d ruined everything for Lance
“Lance, I’m so sorry. This is my fault... if I hadn’t let you go... this wouldn’t have...”
“Stop it. Stop right there. Right now I can’t... You didn’t do anything”
“I should have...”
Hauled up from sitting beside Lance, Keith was manhandled into Lance’s lap like Lance was picking up Blue. Wrapping his arms around him, the vampire rested his forehead against Keith’s arm
“Keith. Just stop. Stop it. No. You didn’t know. You had no idea. Coran wanted to see the tunnels, and we would have been stuffed without him”
“I fucked up. Pidge saw. Hunk and Shay won’t talk to me. Pidge saw Rieva as a damn wolf. You got hurt. Matt got hurt. Curtis popped a fucking horn. Why didn’t I say something?”
“You did. You told me we could totally blow it off. It was fine until Coran poked at the magic”
“He said it was some kind of spell to stop supernatural things from living down there”
“If I had to feel that every day, I wouldn’t want to live down there either. But anyway, how are you?”
“You already asked me that. I haven’t even asked how you feel”
“I’m okayish. My arm’s not broken anymore, so that nice. What happened to Matt?”
“Busted jaw. Coran did some kind of fae magic on him. I feel like you’re changing the topic”
Lance sighed at him. Neither of them were not thinking about Pidge. Nosing at his arm, Lance was no doubt beating himself up internally
“I’ve never... I didn’t want Pidge to find out like this. What I want to do is call her, but she probably won’t answer me. I know there’s magic in the tunnels now, and that’s why we snapped, but I feel like a douche for being mad at Coran for touching it”
“Coran’s been here a bit. Allura too. I didn’t want to leave, but Shiro said you’d be disappointed if I didn’t try to take care of myself”
“I think I would have been angry, but I would have understood. You needed time to process things. I get it. I’m sorry I scared you, but I’m not sorry that you didn’t get hurt”
It clicked in Keith. Part of that anger was because Lance had been hurt. That Lance willingly let himself be hurt
“You can’t just do that to me. I was covered in your blood. I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t even know if you’d make it through. You can’t do that to me. I swear I really will punch you in the dick as hard as I can if you ever let yourself get hurt like that again”
“I know... but... God. When Matt turned, I thought... I didn’t even think. It was all instinctual. I just wanted you to be safe”
“You’re still an idiot and I’m still mad at you”
“Join the club. I guess this is it for me. Pidge and Hunk know. I’m going to have to start all over again”
“Pidge might come round...”
“Or she might be at home researching every known way to kill a vampire. She’s going to think I was using her... but... I really loved her... I love her, Keith... she was family and now she hates me”
Keith knew this was coming. His heart broke all over again to hear Lance say it. He’d heard all his boyfriend’s fears before. Turning in Lance’s hold, Keith straddled his boyfriend’s lap. Cupping Lance’s face, Lance shook as he cried
“Hey. We don’t know that. She could just need time. I know I needed time when I found out. Shiro can tell you about it. I didn’t know anything... and Pidge... she’s not like me. She was open to the idea before she saw”
“I lied to her for years”
“So did my mum. She... she left me behind. She knew everything and she left me behind. Pidge... Pidge knows now, but you... You two... You two are tight. Pidge needs to calm down and work her own thoughts out”
“But... but now Hunk knows. They... I’ve had friends before, but never like them. I love them so much. I know pushing her now will only make her mad, but when I think about how much she’s hurting... This is why... why I shouldn’t...”
Whatever Lance was going to say was cut off as he dissolved back into tears
“Don’t give up on Pidge before you jump to to the worst. Okay. This is Pidge. She’s probably going to storm in here and start kicking everyone’s arse”
Lance sniffled wetly, Keith wiping away his tears as he attempted a wobbly smile
“She... she would”
“Damn straight. Our little gremlin is a force to be reckoned with”
“I’m sorry... for... she’s your friend too...”
“You don’t have to be sorry. Unless it’s sorry for getting snot everywhere”
Lance barked a laugh before sniffling again
“I’m sorry about that... Hey... thanks... I know I slept a lot... but thanks...”
“I would say anytime, but I don’t want to see that ever again. I was a mess. Hell, Shiro had to bath me because I was so out of it”
“Should I be worried?”
“About Shiro seeing me naked? Nah. About the other stuff, we’ll figure it out”
“I don’t deserve you”
“My boyfriend thinks I’m a catch”
“Your boyfriend would be right. Seeing I don’t see him here, would he be mad if we cuddled?”
“I think I can convince him it’s okay. He’s got this thing where he’s like ridiculously nice to people”
“I heard it’s only to people he cares about that”
“I heard that too... but I think he just cares about everyone”
Lance snorted, but it wasn’t a happy snort. It was a “I’m now beating myself up about something else”
“Babe?”
“I haven’t even asked about Mami...”
Oh...
“I think Coran’s been to visit her. And we can totally go see her too”
“I left her alone again...”
Keith bit back telling Lance that his siblings had probably been with her so she hadn’t been alone, but that would probably be taken wrongly
“She’ll understand. I know you spent the last few days sleeping, but you still need to rest”
“Yeah... probably... you’re probably right... Can I hold you?”
Keith should be the one holding Lance, not the other way around
“I think I can manage that”
“Good... I still... I’m still scared... that I’m going to wake up and find...”
“And find me snoring? That’s more than likely”
“You know what I mean”
“I do. I’m okay, you know. Matt didn’t hurt me, and no signs or symptoms of suddenly turning”
“My blood is dangerous... you should have left me”
His boyfriend was so stupid. He wasn’t leaving him
“Don’t be stupid. I’m not going to leave you when you’re torn to shreds”
“If anything happened to you, I’d never forgive myself”
“Then it’s a good thing nothing’s going to happen to me”
“You can’t make promises like that”
“I can for the rest of the night. Let’s get some rest and talk about this in the morning”
*
Lance still felt the lingering tenderness of being a werewolf chew toy. When Keith fell asleep in his arms, Lance laid awake for hours processing. Pidge knew his secret, and he really couldn’t blame her for not wanting to see him. He remembered biting Keith, he felt his face all wrinkle up as he showed her his vampire face. Matt and Pidge would be fighting. Matt as stubborn as Pidge was. He’d be trying to talk to her, while she shut them all out as she processed. If she hadn’t approached Matt, asking what was happening, then that was a bad sign. Pidge had waited months for Matt to come home. She would have been glued to his side if this was some rumour she was checking out.
Ever since they’d met, Pidge had been Hunk’s best friend. Lance adored the pair of them, and never wanted to be in the way of that friendship. Giving Hunk the “choice”, Lance wanted him to choose Pidge. But Hunk was the greatest and most forgiving man to ever walk the Earth. He’d talk to Lance, upsetting Pidge, and possibly causing a rift between them. If that was the outcome then it was better he left Garrison. Pidge might come around, but if he was in town there was always that chance of upsetting them. He couldn’t go home. He didn’t have a home to go back to... Not until... not until Pidge had had enough time and space to make her mind up without pressure.
And then there was Keith. He was dating Keith... yet... Pidge and Hunk were so good for his boyfriend. Keith was making friends, starting to see he was worthy of love. And god if Keith didn’t deserve love. He was awkward as fuck, had a low people threshold, and completely hopeless on recent events... He fitted in. He filled the gap and Shay smoothed the edges. Shiro was stuck in this too. He was best friends with Matt. Curtis had a horn! Curtis and Shiro were on the cusps of becoming more and now his curse had been ramped up.
Then there was Coran. He loved Coran. Coran had shown him such unconditional love. Coran couldn’t have know the magic would... but... he... Surely Coran had felt the magic. He should have said something earlier... If he suspected. If he cared... Coran did care. Lance just didn’t understand how one afternoon could turn things upside down. They were lucky that it hadn’t happened on the weekend. Not when Coran hadn’t been there to subdue Matt. He... But if it was in front of Pidge, Shay, and Hunk, then... He didn’t know. He couldn’t have protected all of them. Matt had the jump on him. He’d acted without thinking. Proper thought went out the window when Matt’s claws raked down his back. And Matt... he hoped he was okay. He wanted to talk to him. He wanted to see he was okay. Matt hadn’t been in control, so he couldn’t blame him.
And then he was back to Keith again. He adored Keith, but Keith could have turned. Keith was covered in his blood. That must have been so traumatic for him. Then he’d left him alone to mentally abuse himself as he buried himself in the waves of misplaced guilt. Lance was glad they got Keith out the room and doing things. He had the time to sit by his boyfriend’s side, but Keith didn’t. Keith was human.
So where did that leave him now? Coran hadn’t wanted him coming here thanks to the new vampire in town... but he couldn’t go back to Garrison. He could work from anywhere, provided he had his phone and laptop. Coran kind of owed him... so maybe he could live here until the dust settled. Blue and Kosmo were already here. There was no way he was asking to stay with Keith and Shiro. That wasn’t even a question, and if it was, he’d say no. He wouldn’t put them in danger, nor drive a wedge between them. Shiro probably had a few choice words over him biting Keith. If he could, he’d punch himself in the mouth for that. Keith was precious to him. Moving to the step of having sex was right for them. He felt closer when Keith was buried inside of him, and not just proximity wise. He felt accepted by his boyfriend, and while sex might have happened, he still wanted to take things slow with Keith. He wanted to build a real relationship with him. He wanted to support him. Not financially or anything like that. He wanted to support him the way his boyfriend always supported him. He’d been awake a little while before initiating conversation, trying to process all that happened. But he couldn’t do that when he had so many questions. Keith was stupid enough to think that they could just go see Miriam. He loved that in Keith. He was broody, hot headed, and he’d grown since Lance met him. Or maybe he’d finally been able to open up? To be himself? When morning came, he’d message Pidge. He’d apologise and let her know he’d be staying in Platt, and he’d be ready to talk when she was. That was the only solution to the situation. Until then, all he could do, was bask in the feel of his boyfriend against him.

Pt12
"You barely ate anything," Keith protests. He can see the bones in Shiro's face are more sharply defined, now.
Watching Curtis slide in behind Shiro and wrap his arms around the other man's middle, Keith wonders if Shiro would even sit up without the support. He seems frail. He's never seemed frail before. Never.
"I put the soup bowl back mostly full," he continues. "We brought sushi, if you'd rather..."
Krolia takes the cue to bring food over from the counter. Along with drinks and Lance gets up to help her load the coffee table with silverware and food.
"Or pizza," Matt suggests.
"Or if youre queasy... Soup or juice."
Shiro breathes out through his nose.
"Patience yields focus," Keith, Matt, Pidge, and Lance all day in perfect unison.
Shiro just wrinkles his nose in mock irritation by way of response. Leaning over he picks up one of the juice packets and makes a big show of being unable to open it one handed. He could if he wanted to.
Curtis snorts, and wrestles the packet away to crack it open and pass it back. But not before faking a hand over and then taking a long drink of it, first.
"Gross," Shiro mutters.
"You've had my tongue in your mouth, but sharing a drink is where you draw the line? Well guess where else I guess my mouth doesn't belong."
"Oh, no gross. No, not cool." Lance pretends to cover his ears. "Even referencing old people sex is nasty!"
"Old!" Shiro says indignantly as he can. Play along. Fake it till you make it.
Tempted to make an experience joke, Curtis feels it might hit a sore spot. For all he knows Lance has done a little dating recently.
"Yeah I mean you look like a grandpa, why don't you dye it?" Matt asks. Mostly still teasing.
"So i can look as tired as I feel?' Shiro tries. It falls flat. "The senior citizen discount is better than the one for veterans...." He tries, working a smile onto his face.
Lance looks at him, and lightly touches the Altean marks on his cheeks. "Its for her, isnt it?" He asks, eyes overbright. He's really moving on fine. But he'd never thought all those times Shiro checked on him, that Shiro was still grieving, too.
Looking down and away he presses his lips into a thin line so they won't tremble. Taking a drink of juice, he lets the flavor roll over his tongue. At least no one's pushing him to eat.
When Shiro finishes off his drink, Lance makes eye contact with Curtis. Shifting back, he understands. And isn't shocked when Shiro is slammed into him and Lance's arms dig into his middle.
"I miss her, too," Pidge says abruptly, and Lance holds out an arm. She squishes into the pile. "Keith just get your ass in here," she snaps irritably and he 'reluctantly' joins. Curtis shifts away, letting Keith take his spot. Keith settles behind Shiro, supporting him.
"I'm really sorry about Adam, too," Keith says softly. "I let you blow me off once and I never... We both loved him."
"I never even thought to check..." Matt says. "After you left, he and I got closer. He was a good guy."
Shiro's shoulders start to shake in silent sobs.
Colleen and Sam have finished up enough to know the topic has turned to Adam. "He knew how you felt about him," Sam promises. "And he knew you were alive and coming home." If that helps he doesn't know, but hopefully it's better than knowing nothing. "I think he was excited to see you. Even if you two never were going to be the way you were before."
Curtis quietly does his best to explain to Krolia who Adam was. She knows Allura.
"It doesn't upset you? Them praising him?"
"That's Takashi's past. I'm his present, and I hope...his future."
Krolia shrugs. Humans are weird.
At some point the grieving winds down and concludes. Keith is gently rubbing Shiro's back and trying to reassure him. For all he knows his brother is mortified at having broken down in front of witnesses.
Curtis drags over a box of tissues that gets passed around.
"Okay my turn, move aside boys," Colleen says, forcing the paladins to clear out until she has a path to Shiro. Pulling him into a tight hug, she's gratified when he leans into her and hugs back. Patting his back gently, she kisses the side of his head. "I don't know when we forgot you were just a young pilot... Not much older than Matt. You've always been like family to us."
Shiro tries to brush her comments aside but she's not having it.
"Sam knew you were the best. And somewhere along the way we forgot you were anything other than a leader. We forgot to be family. You and Adam and Keith were one. And at the Garrison it was you, Sam, and Matt."
"I was your boss," he points out, voice muffled by her shoulder.
"Moms trump all military rankings. I'm always able to veto you," she tells him reassuringly.
"Pff," he protests, only to scrunch his face when she peppers him with kisses.
"Earth mothers have no shame," Curtis comments to Krolia quietly.
"Make a comment like that and you're next," Collen warns. "We're all family here."
"Why does that sound like a threat?" Keith asks, grunting when Shiro pushes against him in a lackluster attempt to escape more affection.
"Because it is," Pidge and Matt say in unison.
"Holt family hug!" Sam insists, bunching up his kids closer to his wife.
Curtis isn't sure how it happens but somehow they all end up squeezed together in a group hug. It's not comfortable, and thankfully it doesn't last long, but it feels kind of perfect.
Once freed Shiro takes an interest in the food, leaning forward to use his fingers to pick out random pieces of sushi and dumping them on a plate before settling back against Keith.
"Are you gonna use me as furniture all night?" Keith complains. Not like Shiro and Adam hadn't told him the same thing hundreds of times before. He wriggles a little in mock discomfort and Shiro makes an annoyed noise when it makes him drop his sushi.
"I've got this Shiro," Lance reassures him, leaning over to grab chopsticks.
"Oh no, take cover," Pidge warns.
"Hey! I'm really good at using chopsticks!" he drops the piece of sushi twice before he has it.
"Why're you taking my food?" Shiro complains.
"Im not, I'm helping. Open wide."
"What?"
Keith starts to laugh. Curtis can't imagine Shiro letting someone feed him. He won't even eat off Curtis' fork at restaurants unless Curtis passes the whole fork over. Laughing, too, soon everyone but Lance is giggling.
"Nope. Not gonna happen." Shiro selects a different piece and stuffs it into his mouth.
"Fine!" Lance jokes, setting the piece back along with the chopsticks.
Shiro takes them up instantly with a little smirk.
Keith leans over Shiro's shoulder. "That looks good," he says, reaching for a piece.
"Hey!" Shiro protests, trying to rebuff him with just his shoulders. Stuffing the piece in question into his mouth, he tries to inform Keith that it's gone now. His mouth is too full.
"I mean there's more on your plate," Keith points out. He'll do this all day if it means Shiro will eat.
"Cut it out," Colleen warns. "You'll choke."
Shiro gives Keith a look that most definitely says : no I won't.
"Gross. Shiro, gross."
"Seems interesting to me," Curtis grins, having caught the exchange.
Keith gives Lance a look. "I gotta stretch," he tells Shiro, gently patting his back. He wheezes when Shiro leans back on him more. "I will pee on you," he threatens and Shiro instantly sits up straight.
Lance shifts some, not to take Keith's spot but to offer more support. Pidge and Matt shift in response.
"Hey, can I talk to you for a second?" Keith asks Curtis, checking to see Shiro is occuppied by Pidge, Matt, and Lance.
"Sure."
"Ask Shiro, I'm really bad with words, okay? But I feel like I should say something. I know very little about you guys and I'm sorry. But I can tell you really love him. And he loves you. And I don't know how it works, or what the future holds...
But it was so different with Adam. He was so different. Patience yields focus. Everything had to be controlled. And he had to be perfect. He was a little bit of a show off... And he drove himself to the edge." Keith takes a breath. "And they suffered for it. Trying to support someone who never chooses you first. I was so angry at Adam but I get it now. And... I see him choosing you. This time he's choosing you.
"I see the way he looks for you. Or just the way you guys look at each other. You're so in tune." Keith looks down. "And I'm so sorry you had to call us to task... You're right. We are his family. And so we're yours, too.
"And i don't know what I'm really trying to say other than... He's not struggling or fighting for anything. He has you. And I'm so grateful he has you. I haven't seen him relax... Or drop his guard... He was so annoyed all of us came," Keith laughs. Curtis grins. "And he didn't even try that hard to play Mr. Perfect and cover it up. We got to grieve with him. And tease again." He rubs at his eyes.
"I don't know what he'd be like without you in his life right now, but I'm glad I don't have to find out."
(I'll edit more in later?)

random thought: imagine adam and shiro are just catching up when they reach earth. no funny business at all because they’ve both moved on but it’s just good to see someone who you thought (and thought you were, respectively) was dead, especially if they used to be important to you. but every time they are catching up krolia pulls shiro away under the guise of important voltron work. shiro is chill bc he’s used to krolia popping out of the shadows. but adam is confused bc he thinks krolia 1/2
2/2 is shiro’s new boo. except she’s really only looking out for her son, who we all know is head over heels for shiro. it’s all just misunderstanding and confusion but krolia is definitely the type to keep everyone on their toes and I love that about her
i recognize that this is not a prompt, but given that it’s a really interesting prompt, i’ve elected to ignore that
Krolia doesn’t have much of what Keith’s father used to call maternal instinct. It sounds like a human thing, something that her people haven’t identified in their own species.
But the nearly twenty deca-phoebs of separation paired with the sudden appearance of her son back in her life and the two deca-phoebs spent together have left her protective. Their journey through the quantum abyss left no room for secrets, and they know things about each other now that parents and children don’t normally speak about.
That’s what makes this so unacceptable. Krolia feels almost as—as maternal now for Shiro as she does for her own son, has heard all the deep details of his life that Keith had been privy to as a close friend at the Garrison. She knows about his hopes and dreams as much as his failures, and she knows about the devastation wrought at the hands of the same asshole Shiro is sitting across from now, two cups of coffee between them.
Her footsteps are silent, but the tray of food she drops on the table as she sits in the seat next to Shiro is anything but.
“Hello,” she says, voice pleasant. Her hand drops to Shiro’s wrist, squeezes once, and then falls away. “Adam, is it?”
***
In between meetings with very annoying humans who stare at her like she’s going to kill them all at any minute, Krolia keeps watch. It’s the skill that made her such an important asset to the Blade for so long, and without her life in imminent danger as an undercover agent, it’s refreshing to put it to use without the constant threat of discovery.
Keith is like her, in this way. He isn’t quite as stealthy or as quiet, particularly in his personal life, but he likes to keep tabs. Knowing what’s happening in his surroundings makes him feel secure, and he stays in tune with his teammates for similar reasons.
It’s interesting, then, to see it all fall away around one man.
***
Adam starts showing up  more often, which Krolia doesn’t love. He stands at Shiro’s shoulder like a slighter, more unfortunate shadow. She does her best to draw Shiro away, a hand to his shoulder. She narrows her eyes at Adam—another human motion taught to her by Keith—but refrains from speaking. His unease grows from day to day.
***
The upshot of all this is that Krolia gets to know Shiro in his own right and not as someone who exists only through Keith’s eyes. He’s smart, sharp, dedicated—every inch of him is committed to the ideals of Voltron and to the quiet fire that burns at the core of him. This strange new growth of friendship between him and Adam seems contradictory to Krolia at first, but the more she watches, the more she understands.
Shiro sees the good in people. He notices the best parts of them and forgives much of the worst, and Krolia wonders if that could be a vulnerability, if this is the soft underside of his belly, too often exposed.
He sees the good in her, too.
***
“I see what you’re doing,” a voice says from behind Krolia. She doesn’t startle, having already heard and noted the steps leading to her, and instead turns around smoothly. “The name’s Matt Holt. We sort of met.”
Krolia clasps his hands in the human way and then presses her fist to her chest in acknowledgement. “What are you referring to?”
“I don’t like him either.” Matt’s eyes slide to her left, and she turns to follow his gaze straight to Shiro and Adam, heads bent over a PADD.
“Shiro?”
Matt snorts. “Yeah, okay. Just want you to know you’re not the only one who’s not thrilled.”
“You’re protective of him.” Shiro seems to inspire that everywhere he goes, and Krolia has watched it make people overly zealous in their assumptions of who Shiro is and who he should be.
“No,” Matt says. He sighs, heavy, and shakes his head like he can’t believe what he’s about to say. “I’m protective of both of them, same as you.”
***
“Keith loves you,” she says. The weight in Shiro’s arm clatters to the ground, drawing the eyes of half the people in the gym. Krolia continues loading her weights onto the bar like she heard nothing.
Shiro’s cheeks are scarlet.
“He’s—he’s my best friend,” Shiro says, refusing to look at her. “And I’m his.”
“Yes,” she says, sitting down on the bench in preparation to begin the workout Shiro taught her. Human gyms are different but very efficient, and she enjoys the meditative aspect of weightlifting. “He told me about you while we were on his journey.”
Shiro swallows and stares at the ground, hand twisting in the hem of his loose shorts. “What did he say?”
“Well,” Krolia says, and she tries to figure out how far she should go, if it’s in the interests of both her son and the man he loves. “He told me just that. He loves you.”

My Keith (Voltron) Headcanons
All of these help shape the way I portray Keith in my big fic Shore Leave to some extent or other. They haven’t all been directly referenced, but they are there in my head when I am writing him.
His accent/language:
he does speak some Korean, but it is primarily ‘baby talk’, the names of foods, and honorifics
he understands more Korean than he can speak, but even that is very kid-friendly stuff
when he was young, he had a drawl, like his father. He lost it in part because he was in the system and hearing so many different accents in the various homes, but also because he CHOSE to get rid of it to blend in to the background, and to be able to have that be something he shared with his Dad and no one else
his English no longer shows any trace of his original accent, but it DOES influence how his pronunciation and cadence shows up in NEW languages. So, Allura and Coran would find his attempts at Altean to be strange. Likewise, the Blades would find his halting Galran to have a strange rhythm and accent
he speaks a tiny amount of Japanese, and understands a bit more than that. Shiro tries his best to hide his cringe whenever Keith uses any Japanese words, because he knows Keith is doing it as a way to express how close he is to Shiro, but his pronunciation is just... wrong
he is close to fluent in Spanish, which allows him to mostly understand Lance’s Cubano (largely because he knows the way Lance tends to phrase things and express himself so well that he can intuit the overall meaning of his statements even when he misses words or the sentence structure seems odd to him)
He actively avoids speaking Spanish if at all possible. He is well aware that his accent is bad. He and Shiro have discussed this multiple times, because he BARELY passed his Spanish language class, despite doing really well in the written portion and in comprehension, because he just butchers the accent. The first time Lance hears him say ANYTHING in Spanish he is shocked at just how terrible Keith’s accent is.
he knows like, a dozen or so Hebrew words and phrases- mainly related to food, holidays, greetings or insulting someone
His relationship with his Dad:
he was very close to his father, and actually is a lot like him in terms of interests and temperament (which I think is fairly canon)
his Dad home-schooled him
he and his dad would take things apart and rebuild them for fun, and he still enjoys simple mechanics, and would enjoy model building if he ever tried it
one of his earliest memories is learning to make kimchi with his grandparents during their last visit before they passed away
his father used to wake him up with pancakes and whipped cream in bed for his birthday every year
his Dad was very encouraging of his penchant for drawing and made sure he always had a wide range of art supplies and when they ran out of room on the fridge to showcase his drawings, his dad started pinning them up on the walls all through the house or putting them in photo albums
he was five when he told his father that when he grew up he was going to have a husband, not a wife, and his Dad just mussed his hair and said that was fine, but he wasn’t allowed to date until he could get the cereal down from the top shelf without help. For his entire life, he stores the cereal boxes on the top shelf of the cupboard because reaching them reminds him that his Dad accepted him the way he was (ending up in less than supportive situations caused him to question and struggle with his sexuality for a bit, but he was definitely one of those kids who KNEW from a young age that they were gay)
when his father was working at the fire station, Keith went with him and stayed with the support staff while the fire fighters were on a call. It was against policy, but everyone had a soft spot for the little guy, and he was generally quiet and helpful
his favorite thing to do at the station was to make sure all the boots were standing upright and paired together ‘to help’ them get into their gear faster
his second favorite thing to do was wash the tires when it was time to clean the trucks
every firefighter in the station had at least one picture in their lockers that had been drawn and very seriously gifted to them by Keith
he knew about his father’s death before the crew returned to the station, because he heard the whole thing over the radio in the station without anyone realizing
His time in the foster system:
he bounced between ‘foster families’ and ‘group homes’ because he had a social worker who really believed he would thrive if he was able to find the right situation
his first foster family gave up on him just when he was starting to trust them and that left a scar
he was never abused by any of the foster parents or workers he had, but he was a bright, observant kid and he’d seen enough of the other kids get hurt that way that it made him especially wary (and reinforced the idea that his walls and standoffishness was working to protect him)
he was incredibly touch-starved, and that led to him being sexually precocious and exploring his sexuality with his peers at a young age. This continued throughout his time living with Adam and Shiro and their struggles to understand it and how to handle it was the source of a significant amount of stress in the home
because of Shiro’s health issues, Adam was the official foster parent on record, which Keith did not know until after Shiro was declared dead
Adam and Shiro had wanted to legally adopt him, but again, Shiro’s health issues caused issues. Had they not broken up before Kerberos, Adam was planning on pursuing the adoption on his own
His relationship with Shiro:
he is incredibly protective of Shiro’s privacy and Shiro, in general. Much of what is seen by the other Paladins as him being closed off actually comes from him not wanting to reveal anything personal about Shiro
he has very conflicted feelings about Shiro, and is repressing a lot of stuff that really should be brought up, but he is terrified of causing Shiro any more pain than he’s already endured
he goes through periods where he is very clingy and tactile with Shiro and periods where he is very standoffish and closed off. He hasn’t made the connection, but those periods correlate with how well he is sleeping
when things are calmer, he tends to act more like a bratty kid brother- teasing and annoying Shiro and getting a kick out of getting under Shiro’s skin
he can recognize that Shiro is in good shape and is a handsome guy, but is genuinely grossed out by people making any kind of sexual reference about him
he adores his ‘big brother’ but cannot understand why the others have not figured out that ‘Shiro is a HUGE dork’
about half the time their ‘sparring sessions’ end up in very sibling-like wrestling matches with noogies and tickling and ‘stop hitting yourself’ elements that make them both seem a couple of 11 year olds
he pretends not to notice that Lance and Shiro have a lot in common
he sees Shiro as his brother, and Shiro refers to him the same way, but Shiro’s emotions around Keith are much more parental even though he would never say that out loud for fear of making Keith think he might be trying to ‘take his Dad’s place’ (which is ONE of the reasons he was so insistent that Keith is not allowed to call him ‘Space Dad’)
His relationship with Adam:
it took longer for him to warm up to Adam than Shiro and they had a quieter bond, but Keith was very close to Adam
Adam was very protective of Keith, and had a knack for getting him to open up and talk about stuff that was bugging him
Adam was very ‘family oriented’ and made regular plans for the three of them to do stuff together and is the source of Keith’s “bonding moment” terminology
when Keith struggled academically, Adam was the one to tackle homework with him
Adam made sure Keith got out to his father’s grave regularly, and started donating to charities in his father’s honor
because Shiro is a menace in the kitchen, Adam taught Keith basic cooking skills
music was a big thing in their house, and Adam was the one that got Shiro hooked on kpop- he wanted Keith to be able to hear the language of his childhood in his new home
when Keith’s first ‘real boyfriend’ made him cry, Adam grabbed the phone and dumped him on Keith’s behalf. Keith pretended to be furious about it for weeks, but it actually made him feel really safe and loved
Adam was the one that helped Keith see Shiro as A PERSON and not just some kind of savior or perfect hero
he pretends not to notice that Lance shares some of his favorite traits of Adam’s
grief and guilt and anger after Kerberos drove a wedge between Adam and Keith that came to a head when Keith got kicked from the Garrison Program. They fought, and Keith packed up and moved out that night after Adam fell asleep. He had just turned 18 at that point so he didn’t HAVE to stay (and Adam felt helpless to do anything to change it so never went after him)
Keith is very ashamed of how he left things with Adam
Keith thinks Adam was relieved not to have to deal with “Shiro’s stray” anymore (this is not true)
General/Misc:
he has nightmares often. They rarely wake him
he often thinks he smells smoke if he wakes during the night and can’t get back to sleep until he confirms that there isn’t something smoldering or burning
he has two general modes of flirting- the subtle, understated stuff we’ve seen on the show (with Rolo and Hunk), and VERY blatant, overt stuff that barely even counts as flirting because it is so blunt
his way of coping with the loneliness and touch-hunger of living by himself in the desert was to have one night stands and hook-ups a couple of times a week in town (he was also prone to no-strings hook-ups with ‘townies’ when he lived with Adam and Shiro)
the way he interacts with Lance is not generally typical of how he flirts- because he was actively trying NOT to show his interest in Lance
his crush on Matt was very wholesome and adorable and he wasn’t nearly as good at hiding it as he thought he was
he’s attracted to kindness and bravery
he genuinely really enjoys hanging out with Pidge and thinks she’s hilarious. He also finds it adorable how much of a soft spot Shiro has for her
he finds Hunk to be absolutely fascinating. He is in awe of how everyone immediately takes to Hunk and how he never seems to second guess what he says. He is amazed by how easily Hunk expresses affection and connects with people
he notices a LOT more about Lance than even Shiro realizes
he really admires Allura and her distrust of him when his Galra blood was revealed really hurt him because he thought they had enough in common that she might ‘get’ him better than the others. He still doesn’t trust her enough to let his guard down with her
he thinks it is really weird that no one ever mentions the fact that Coran and Alfor were CLEARLY a couple (except for a few oblique comments by Lance in private) because “like, it’s totally obvious, right? He saved TWO people: Allura and Coran. His kid and his lover, right? I’m not the only one who hears those bonkers stories Coran tells, right? Those are not ‘buddy stories’, those are ‘couple stories’, right? Just me?”
he pretends he doesn’t, but he LOVES to sing- he just doesn’t like to draw too much attention to himself
he wears the fingerless gloves because they made it easier for him to get a good grip on the handles of his hoverbike (because he was small for his age and had small hands) or the controls in the simulator, and even when piloting the lions
he never deletes a picture, voice message, or video message that someone sends him without a GOOD reason, so his phone has messages like ‘don’t forget to pick up milk on your way home’ from Shiro from his first year at the Garrison, because he’s terrified of forgetting what someone he’s lost looks like or sounds like (because most of the time he can’t remember his Dad’s voice)
he LOVES kids and is actually really great with children, and especially babies
