Guns or Children: The Only Choice Left, America

There is always a justification for why it’s okay for Americans to own guns.

Tradition. The Cultural Importance of Firearms. Farmers Vs Wild Beasts. The Scary Non-White People Who Are Moving Into The Neighbourhood. The Need For An Unsubtle Penis Metaphor To Show-Off To Your Fellow Men.

And, of course, the worst of them all:

“I Like Them.”

I don’t care.

It has become parodic at this point to try and argue against these points because the people who make them aren’t arguing in good faith anyways: they like guns and they know that you don’t like guns so how can there be any kind of accord when you won’t even meet them on their own turf? You can’t argue with people who don’t like guns because secretly - or not-so-secretly - they just want to take you guns away. We can’t have a real argument about gun control against such an extremist position.

Which is fine because I’m not here to argue. There’s no argument to be made anymore. The time for argument was seventy years ago when America’s culture wasn’t so toxic that the sane, reasonable positions on gun ownership that other countries ended-up with could still be enforced.

That was seventy years ago. That opportunity is gone. There’s no longer any argument to be made.

The Onion makes a habit of running a variation of an article every time a big shooting happens:

The fact that America is irresponsible with guns, cannot be trusted with guns, has lost all ability to live with guns, is fundamentally true, and not in dispute anywhere other than in America itself. America’s mind-boggling gun-death rate is a direct, indivisible result of: [Note: most numbers here are from the last major survey from 2017] 1) The sheer volume of guns. America has about 120 civilian-owned guns for every hundred people in the country. There are more guns than people. If everyone in America had to start killing one-another in a grand old game of nation-wide paintball-with-bullets no one would have to share a gun and there would be spares before the first shot was fired. The next region with an entry on the guns per-people per-region list? The Falkland Islands with 60 guns for every 100 people. The Falkland Islands has a total population of some 3000 people. Its murder rate? Does’t seem to have one. Leaving aside the Falklands War I don’t think anyone’s been murdered there since 1981. Next country down? Yemen. Population: 28 million, with 50-odd guns per 100 people. Yemen a region that hasn’t known peace since... ever. Yemen has existed in some form since 1918 and not once has it ever had what you’d call a lasting and nation-wide peace.

The farthest down the list you have to go to find a country that comes close to America in terms of population size is Pakistan - population 200 million, and only 22 guns for every hundred people. Should they start that nation one -kill-paintball game most people would have to share until they’d wiped-out some eighty percent of the country.

So the three biggest gun-owning regions in the world by guns per person is a tiny British tourist trap where nobody but governments commit crimes, and civil-war ravaged Yemen. And America. Neither of those first places comes close to America in terms of either size or number of guns. America has more guns for civilian use than anywhere else on Earth. This number is not in dispute. America has more than twice the number of guns per citizen than anywhere else on Earth. This number is also not in dispute. America has a death-by-firearm rate far and beyond any other nation of its size, population, wealth, and stability. Of the six countries that make up half the world’s gun deaths, America is one of them - the other five are Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, and Guatemala, all nations with significantly more serious gang-related and stability-related issues than America. This number is also not is dispute.

2) Easy access to guns. 390 million guns don’t get distributed by accident. American gun laws are known for their laxity and their ease of use: in America the courts have decided that 1791′s Second Amendment of the US Constitution, by-and-large, grants Americans the largely unrestricted right to own guns, and indeed have something of a moral obligation to do so as a guarantor against tyranny. American law thus goes out of its way to make the process of purchasing a gun as inconvenient as possible. It is easier to buy a guy in many places in America than it is to purchase alcohol. 3) A culture that worships guns. America has a culture that loves guns. A culture that lauds guns. A culture that worships guns. America has a culture that that stands around and not only says ‘shit guns are cool’ but takes the next step and says ‘and people should be able to own cool things.’ This is somewhat odd given the awesome destructive power of a gun and the average citizen’s need to posses destructive power. Tanks are cool, but nobody is handing those out to civilians. Fighter jets are awesome, but we don’t make those for sale to anything other than repressive governments. “But DukeofRiven swords are cool and we let people buy those,” you say. Well, many countries don’t, first of all, or allow much sword-freedom - in my country it is legal to own a sword, but not to wield it or carry it. Secondly, you know how many people were murdered with a sword in 2017? No, you don’t. Nobody does - no one seems to be keeping track as far as I can tell. It’s so few people that the number is statistically insignificant. I can tell you that in 2017 some 1,591 people were murdered with all “knives and other cutting instruments” compared to a full 10,982 gun homicides. This is a list that notes all defenestration murders (4), and all murders via explosion (0) - it doesn’t take a lot to get on the FBI’s “common murder weapon” radar. Swords don’t qualify. “But DukeofRiven” - I hear you cry (’Your Grace’ will do) - “That’s a lot of knife deaths. Knives are a useful tool that would be silly to ban. Guns are an important tool too - farmers who live in dangerous areas find guns useful for warding off wild animals.” Well that’s true, fictional question asker - farmers do find guns useful. There’s about 3.2 million farmers in American - slightly less than 1% of the population - so let’s do the American thing and give them a heaping, generous portion of 10 guns each. That still leaves... uh... about 360 million guns not owned by farmers. Well what if we take all rural-dwelling Americans, who hunt and shoot and kill as part of their very important rural hunting/shooting/killing culture and make sure they all have at least one gun. 57 million rural non-farmer Americans - about 17% of the population - but damn, we’ve still got 303 million guns lying around. Most American gun owners own at least three guns? Can’t deprive the rural folk of their just due so will give them each an extra two guns. That still leaves us with 181 million guns to hand out to civilian urbanites who cannot possible have a good day-to-day use for them - and that’s counting the extra seven guns we gave to each farmer. If those guns were to secede and form an independent nation they’d bump Ethiopia’s spot to become the 12th largest country by-population in the world. That’s more guns than the population of the world’s 109 smallest countries combined. “Guns are still tools used by hunters” - oh sweet boy howdy do I not give a shit about hunters. 7000 of those 2017 deaths were by handguns, a gun that literally has no other purpose other than to shoot people. Handgun deaths top all other gun deaths in America by a significant margin. A handgun is not a tool. It is a weapon. That’s all it is - and Americans own a lot of weapons. You’re drowning in them. You are overrun by guns. Right-wingers should forget curbing immigration to save white people as the dominant ethnic group - the primary demographic of the United States is gun! Y’all lost already! I don’t care that you think guns are cool, because I also think guns are cool - and I own none. I can be impressed by guns without having to own guns, without making sure my friends own guns, and my family owns guns, and that there are enough guns in my country for every single person to personally shoot another person in the head in a suicidal conga line stretching round the entire country and still have spare guns left over. Culture? Tradition? Heritage? Don’t give a flying fuck. Slavery was part of your tradition too, and no that’s not a disingenuous comparison because both practices created death, pain, misery, and suffering for profit. Both practices were morally indefensible. You’ve been a responsible gun owner all your life? Don’t give a fuck. How many gun owners need to be un-responsible before the tipping point is crossed and you would agree that there is culturally a gun problem, that no amount of responsibility by one group os making up for the irresponsibility of the other half? Why is this ‘one good man in ‘Sodom’ argument framed this way? 10000+ people died in 2017 because of a culture that glorifies an item with no functional utility to improve society. Let me be clear about this: given the number of gun deaths compared to that of gun owners that 10000 deaths is statistically insignificant it terms of responsible proportionality. Most gun owners are responsible gun owners. There’s only 118 million gun-owning households in the US - only a third of the population actually owns a gun - so if we fudge the number a bit and just say that there are 118 million individual guns owners the numbers work out to about 0.009% of all gun owners being irresponsible. Guess what: that doesn’t matter. You want to know all the stuff America bans that hasn’t ever killed anybody but someday might? Kinder Eggs. Haggis. Imported brie. Think of all the chemicals banned since the 70s because of fears that they might do something. Think of every product recall that happened because one person was simply injured. Think of the products you’ve banned for nothing more than their dangerous ideology like Cuban cigars. You banned Amy Winehouse and Margaret Thatcher’s son from entering America but you won’t ban the sale of guns? Guns aren’t nearly as dangerous as the late Amy Winehouse? The moral bankruptcy of the tradition argument was demonstrated half a century ago, when a lot less Americans were dying by the gun. When whole classrooms of children and concert goers on the Vegas Strip and students at their lectures and devoted church-goers [and hey, synagogue shooting after I first started writing this: all house-of-worship goers] all have to fear the omnipresent threat of death when does your right to admire the gun cease to be a relevant point of consideration? When does living every day with the constant gnawing fear that it could happen to you finally suffocate ‘most of us are responsible’ in its cradle? When do ‘a few bad apples’ become ‘too many bad apples’? If I’m making apple sauce you’re not going to care that 99% of my apples were perfect - because that 1% of rotten apples I tossed in was enough to ruin the batch. When does ‘most of us are not rotten’ stop sounding quite so reassuring? I’ve been listening a lot lately to Still Buffering, a McElroy extended universe podcast where - in its first year - the-then 15 year-old Rileigh Smirl shared her life with her 15-years-plus older siblings. In the episode recorded immediately after the Orlando shooting, where the adults are literally shaking and you can hear it in their voices, the 15 year-old very blandly describes life in a world where the idea of being shot in her school has been so utterly normalized for her that she has a hard time generating the same level of fear about it as the adults do. It is genuinely nauseating. Her sisters are practically crying into their microphones, sick with horror that their little sister goes to school entirely accepting that another member of her school not only might wander in with a gun and shoot-up the place, but would not be culturally abnormal for having done so. The young Ms. Smirl is already used to being evacuated: kids at her school have brought guns, brought bombs, and while nothing fatal has yet happened, she would be unsurprised if it did. resigned to the fact. If the shooter only murdered a handful of people the story wouldn’t still be in the news after a couple days (did you even remember there was a synagogue shooting a week ago?) - and if they’d killed dozens they’d be superseded by another shooting within a few weeks. (As of writing - April 26 2019 - there have been six school shootings in the US since the start of the year Eight. There were two more school shootings between me first writing this down on April 26 and coming back to finish it on May 11/12th. There were 20 mass shootings in total in just those fifteen days. 21 fatalities. Jesus Fucking Christ, America.) You know, I wouldn’t care if guns hadn’t killed a soul in 2017. If the simple spectre of their presence - the easy access, the sheer volume, the cultural identity - created a fraction of that level of fear and fatalism you hear in Rileigh Smirl’s voice in school children across America I would happily rip every single gun from the living hands of every American gun owner and melt them in a pyre the size of Delaware rather than let such a state of affairs continue. A mere 10000 gun owners were murderers in 2017? A mere 10000 gun owners a year have been murderers for the last 20 years? A mere 2,000,000 gun murderers in two decades? Damn you all. Keep in mind we haven’t touched on anything other than homicides. 10000-plus gun owners made the decision to murder others with their gun in 2017. People often bring up car deaths as a rebuttal to the gun stats - 40000 car deaths in 2017 to 10000 gun deaths should we therefore ban cars, you idiot? What a disingenuous question. That’s 40000 car deaths of all kinds - I’m talking about homicide alone, where the so-called ‘responsible person’ is proven to use their ‘responsibly’-owned item for irresponsible ends. The ‘bad-eggs.’ You know how many bad-egg car owners murdered people in 2017 as an act of willful homicide? No. And neither do I. It’s another stat so low it is presumably lumped-in with an aggregate - the 976 deaths in 2017 known only as “miscellaneous.” This, again, on a chart that notes that 13 people were murdered by poison, 4 people were murdered by being pushed, and zero people were murdered with explosions. The number of cars used to murder people? Presumably less than three. Could be as low as zero. [Note: the number is actually 50. See the Addendum and this follow-up article for expanded stats.] There are a little over 270 million car owners in the US, and from that we can conclude that while 0.009% of gun owners a year can’t stop themselves from murdering people with their guns, less than 0.000001% of car owners can’t stop themselves from being a first-degree car murderer. On the face of it those are pretty tiny numbers - infinitesimal, really. Less than one percent. Insignificant. Why get worked up? 10,000 lives ended by guns fired with a purpose to kill. By civilians, only, mind - I haven’t even touched on gun deaths by police officers, or the even broader question of gun deaths by US soldiers looking to shoot people. We’re still just focussed on civilian gun owners who felt the need to kill other human beings. ~10,000 American gun murders in 2017 alone. Three times the entire population of the Falklands, your closet neighbours in terms of guns-to-population ratio. I’m Canadian - 36 million people, a disturbing 36 guns per 100 people. If I go to Windsor and drive across the bridge I instantly become 10 time more likely to be shot to death - not specifically because I am now in Detroit, not specifically because I’m a Canadian in the United States, but simply because I went from any developed nation that wasn’t America into America. Taking Detroit specifics account, if you drive back and forth across the Ambassador bridge your odds of getting shot jump some 50 times every time you cross an invisible line on the Detroit River. Detroit and Windsor have very different crime rates: 2017 saw 267 murders in Detroit. Windsor saw 3. The Detroit Murder Rate is 45 per 100,000 people - Windsor is 0.89. These cities are less than 2000 feet apart. About 600 metres. 0.6 kilometres. 0.4 of a mile. Statistically speaking most of those crimes in Detroit were firearm deaths. I can stand in Windsor (having had an excellent meal at Smoke & Spice Southern Barbecue), walk some 300 yards, and my life-expectancy from being slain by a passing bullet balloons 50 times. People just die more in America. That’s - to be fair - partially a matter of volume. Contrasted against Canada, say, and you’re looking at nine times the number of people: of course you’ve got more deaths. But the homicide numbers don’t scale that way. Canada had 266 firearm homicides in 2017. If you made the population of Canada nine times larger, so that we had population parity with the US, we would have had about 2394 gun homicides - still only a quarter of the USA’s 10,982. You’d have to make Canada 41 times larger than it is now, creating a billion and a half Canadians, which amounts to a full 20% of the existing world population. You’d need there to be 1.2 billion more Canadians than there are Americans now to have the same number of gun homicides. Homicides alone! Because we’re still - still - not talking about suicides. Or home ‘defence.’ Or police shootings. Or killings by US troops. Just civilians with guns and the capacity to use them on fellow citizens out of a need to murder. If this getting through? Tell me this is getting through. Americans - your family, friends, colleagues, comrades, acquaintances, lovers, crushes, vaguely-recognized strangers are dying at rates from causes that are not present elsewhere in the stable places of the world. You are dying from solved problems. If ~10,000 Americans were dying yearly from the black plague you’d be upset. You’d be doing something. America has a disease, and that disease is a willingness to let friends, family, lovers, even children die rather than change. Six eight school shootings in four five months. “It’s lucky that fatalities were low,” you might say if you were a lunatic. That’s not lucky. Gut-wrenchingly relieving, all things being equal: six eight schools threatened and only one family four families had to lose a child. It didn’t happen to us think the thousands of parents whose children walked out of those six eight shootings alive. A school bus company that had six eight crashes in four five months wouldn’t count itself lucky that only one child four children died. It would be defunct as a company, drowning in litigation, its corporate officers hounded in the streets by mobs of furious parents horrified that this company had proven so incapable of a simple act like protecting their children. But six eight schools across the nation experienced an event with armed gunman and its not even notable. America, you’re broken. You’re just broken. And your problem is the guns. So I don’t care that you’re a responsible gun owner with a gun cabinet who memorized the rifleman’s credo. I absolutely don’t give a damn that you have fond memories of you and your grandfather stalking deer and bonding as family. If I weigh the cost of you sharing that bonding experience with your own grandchild someday against the ~10000 people shot dead in 2017, and the ~100000 people shot dead over the decade your warm fuzzies don’t amount to shit. Teach your grandkid to bake cookies. Go camping. Introduce him to the love of baseball. If you cannot imagine formative bonding without killing something go take a butchery course at the community college and learn how to barbecue a pig - hey, look, valuable life lessons, a trade skill, and I just made you a must-get for cool parties. Yes, I am talking about taking your guns away. All of your guns. All of them. This is a future I want - because you, America, collectively, have proven that you are not socially responsible enough to be a country that owns guns. If you can ban Kinder Eggs for 50 years because you thought it would take that much time to train your children not to swallow a massive plastic capsule that the rest of the world’s children have no problem surviving, I think at the very least a 50-year moratorium on firearms is the bare fucking minimum. There were 23 school shootings in America in 2018. There have been 20 school shootings in Canada in the entire 152 years of our existence. Over 10000 American civilians decide every year to shoot people to death. That doesn’t happen in other stable places. The difference is THE GUNS. IT’S ALL THE GUNS! IT’S ALL THE FUCKING GUNS! You can’t just talk about tightening guns laws. You can’t just talk about making gun owners more responsible - statistically speaking American gun owners are individually responsible! It doesn’t matter, because collectively you’re all irresponsible. Responsible people don’t prioritize their interests and hobbies over bi-monthly school shootings. Responsible people don’t ‘Good German’ themselves when children’s are under threat at least once a month nation-wide.

Real talk for you people out there who own guns, love guns, would never think or murdering anybody, and are genuinely angry that I keep acting like 10000-a-year bad apples reflects badly on your interests as a whole. How high does the number have to be before your association with your hobby would begin to make you feel uncomfortable with sharing an interest? Let me put it another way: enrolment in youth football teams is dropping nation-wide as parents aren’t comfortable putting their children at risk. Football has given America exciting games to watch, stories of victory and defeat, bonding with friends and family, and one of television’s true masterpieces, Friday Night Lights (#neededmoredevin #justiceforwaverly #justiceforsantiago). But all that good warm fuzzy feeling is running up against a problem: kids are getting hurt. In some cases kids are dying. 2017 saw 13 football-related deaths among the under-18 crowd: 4 direct fatalities, 9 indirect fatalities. (Direct fatalities are causes like head injuries and organ trauma. Indirect fatalities are causes like heat stroke.) That’s a death rate of 0.095/100,000 direct and 0.21/100,000 indirect - still lower than the murder rate in Windsor. And yet football enrolment declines. Because it’s more than just those thirteen deaths: it’s the up-front injuries like broken bones and sprains, it’s the long-term brain injuries that might not emerge for years, it’s the trauma of watching friends and teammates get seriously hurt, die, or simply find the sport a source of stress rather than joy. Right now football is experiencing white flight as predatory football pipelines double-down on players-of-colour to feed their football mills, but that too will decline as a generation that grows up not experiencing a close intimacy with football loses interest in the sport. (Another demographic timebomb lurking in America’s wings.) 13 child deaths by football in 2018. 44 students shot-dead the same year. High schools are shutting down their football programs - taking football completely away - because they can’t stomach all that death, injury, and trauma. The seriousness of this has proven that America is not a nation that can handle its football, and does not want to keep its kids playing football in the same numbers as it once did. (Anyone who wants to come in here and say “would you say the same about hockey, Canadian?” Yes. Absolutely. Instantly. Ditch the whole thing. It’s just a sport, a hobby. It is not more important than lives.) So what will it take to get you to admit that if America can’t handle football it can’t handle guns? A half-dozen kids got their hair chewed in the 90s and America decided that responsibility didn’t matter, that nobody should own a Snacktime Kid Cabbage Patch Doll. One kid died from a non-blunt lawn dart in 1987 and you’ve banned them since 1988. 44 kids got shot to death last year and America thought it unnecessarily restrictive of freedom to take away a single gun. Give me numbers. Please. How many kids would have to die in America this year before you felt uncomfortable owning a gun simply by transference of shame or guilt or association? What if every gun owner but you shot a kid at a school next year? Would you still say your responsibility kept your conscience clear? An absurd, hyperbolic question, fair enough. So let’s start counting down from those 117999999 gun-owning households who aren’t you: what’s the magic number when your responsible ownership of your thing-that-just-kills no longer sits comfortably against the annual number of gun-owning, school-child murderer-producing households? Not accidents, not mistakes, not once-in-a-generation horrors by an statistically aberrant psychopath - I’m talking about systemic patterns of yearly school-child homicide via gunshot. Because last year that was about 44 child murders from about 15 households. That’s currently a number that doesn’t shame you. Start counting up. I’m asking, genuinely, because I need to know. Is there a number? 440 kids murdered by 150 household? 4400 from 1500? 44000 from 15000? Or will others actions never affect you? Is what the rest of society does is of no import, no responsibility of yours? If you were the only responsible gun owner in America, ask yourself if you’d still be comfortable owning a gun. And think - real hard - at what the ratio of responsible-to-not-responsible gun murderers and death tolls are right now, and why you’re okay with that. Then ask yourself what other hobby has that kind of real-life school-kid homicide count that needs to be updated on a monthly basis. Not a lot of gunpla hobbyists struggling with the weight of rogue members murdering kids. Knitters can be vicious, but only socially. Mountain climbers and fast car enthusiasts see plenty of tragedy in their hobby - but they’re tragedies of accidents and mistakes. Not a lot of malicious intent going around. Not a lot of cut ropes and slashed brakes. Not to the tune of 10000+ homicides a year. Ask yourself if maybe - just maybe - America has a problem when it comes to guns. Maybe, just maybe, so many of you being responsible isn’t working. Maybe, just maybe, your hobby, your tradition, your culture, your warm family memories, your constitutional guarantees of ownership, are not worth the death of children in their schools, concert goers at their venues, worshipers at their altars, families in their homes year, after year, after year, after year, after year, after year, after year in numbers that simply, truthfully, are not present elsewhere in the world in places similar to America. Maybe, just maybe, being responsible isn’t enough. Maybe, at some point, the number of dead kids will be too many. And if it isn’t, you need to come clean and admit that every child in America could be shot to death tomorrow and you’d still love owning a gun. You can get rid of the guns, America, or you can start wearing shirts that say “kill all the kids you like - I’m proud to be a gun owner.” Because there’s no other choices left to you. The time for incremental change is long over. The time for saner, less drastic measures died decades ago. There is no moderate position left. It’s the guns, or it’s the children. There are no other choices.

Hay, brothers out of this turf situation, we are heading to the Jury on the tittle deed where me as the beneficiary of the Land is letting the court to know am not interested so am opting my name to be omitted out the ownership list so its remain the property of the two. This is done by confirming my fingerprints with huduma services and my pulse rate is 68 period and i will append my signature to officiate it. We will present ourselves to the court for this occurrence to set my life in peace and harmony. Am sick & tired of women and gay character of wanting good things and moreover brothers am going to do 3-4 tattoos on my hands to as well bar me from any political seat period or from getting a visa unless otherwise which is spelt vividly in the constitution bro. Dont change that you can do a tattoo and still vie which am sick and tired of dude. Wedding At Lulu Lake

(Yay, I finally got time to get this done. Worked on it all day. It’s a bit long but I hope you guys enjoy!)

“You feeling better?”

“Yeah….just….don’t move yet.”

The weather was warm today. The sun bright and shining down on Zora’s domain. Today was a perfect day to be out and about. A perfect day for a wedding. If only the bride to be could hold her stomach down.

As for the past month or so, Lulu had been dealing with morning sickness with her pregnancy. Her head laying in Demoiselle lap as Demi rubbed her stomach, all of Lulu’s bride’s maids were around her as they had been helping her cope. “Don’t worry Lulu. Give it a few more months. It will be worth it,” Paella stated. “I know! I just wish a few months would get here. Getting tired of this,” Lulu groaned. “It’s what happens when you get pregnant silly,” Piro pointed out. Lulu just blew a raspberry as everybody chuckled. “It’s just only one you are having, right?” Octavia asked. Nodding in Demi’s lap, Lulu replied, “That’s what the zora doctors have been saying. Though nobody is sure what the hatchling will be.”

Having her stomach starting to feel better, Lulu patted Demi’s hand as she sat up. “Better?” Demi asked. “Yeah, thanks. Sorry again for the trouble,” Lulu replied.

“Not at all Lulu. It happens. Least you are feeling better now to go through with the wedding. Ah, I’m so excited. A bride’s maid to Lulu’s royal wedding,” Emmy squealed with excitement. “I know. I’m stoked too,” Atarime replied, “Thank you for inviting us.” Shaking her head, Lulu replied. “Not at all. I wanted all my closest friends here as best as I could get them. I’m the one that should be happy that you all came.” All giving chuckles and smiles, a knock came over the door.

Popping in, the last of the bride’s maids, Hannah, Coraline, Pudge, Tartar and Pixie came walking in. “She feeling better?” Hannah asked. “Yeah. We think so,” Demi remarked. “Good. Okay, let’s get her finished up with all the garments. Wedding starts in a few minutes and we need to get her up to the lake,” Hannah replied. Hearing this, the girls scrambled around to get the last bits of Lulu’s wedding dress together.

Having her ready, the group scurried up to the surface of Zora’s Domain’s palace as they made their way up to a certain lake the wedding would be held out; Lulu Lake. Using portals to get up there, the lake and all of Zora’s Domain was closed off to public eye for today as everybody attending the wedding ceremony was standing around the stone monument; the one that described Sidon’s victory against the giant octorok.

Being what Lulu was, not many knew of Lulu’s appearance or that of her existence and relationship to Prince Sidon. Because of this, the wedding itself was kept private and only a certain amount was allowed to attend the after wedding party. Only a few were even allow to see them wed.

Coming over, Precious took hold of Lulu’s face as she checked up on her makeup. “Alright, still good. Nervous?” Precious asked. “Little bit,” Lulu replied sheepishly. “I know. I know. I was too when I married Kane’s father. Promise you, it’s all worthwhile.”

Chatting up, everybody in their formal wear for the wedding was waiting for Prince Sidon, King Dorephan, and the zora priest to show up. I’m giving my Sunshine away today and in a few short months, I’ll be a first time great grandfather. Still feels like the war was just yesterday,” Vio replied, rubbing the back of his head in nerves. “It will be alright. Enjoy these things while you can. How has she been doing? No signs of any trouble?” Doc asked. Shaking his head, Vio replied, “No, other than the morning sickness, the doctors I’ve been giving her a good bill of health. Nobody knows what it’s going to be but I just want her and the child healthy.” “We all do. We all do,” Doc replied, patting Vio on the back.

“So, you two planning to have any more after all this?” Piro asked. “Piro, don’t rush her,” Emmy huffed, annoyed at Piro’s prodding. Giving a hesitant chuckle, Lulu replied, “Can I just get through the first one?”

“I still do not understand why I’m attending,” Mr. T huffed. “Because this Lulu, like the other one we hang out with, sees you as a friend. So be cools for her. And hey, there’s cake at the end of all this,” Demi replied as she straightened Mr. T’s tie up. “Very well,” Mr. T replied.

“Oh, so you are Lulu’s mother,” Nova remarked, “Yes and you must be Mrs. Nova I’ve heard about,” Precious replies. Shaking hands in greeting, the octoling and octobomber chatted for a bit before Agatha walked up. Introducing themselves, the three talked about their children for a bit till a voice spoke up. “Ah, so you are the one I’m suppose to have a tentacle tying rivalry with,” Tamago remarked, walking up with Wasa behind her. “Pardon?” Precious asked as she looked the woman over,” Have we met before?” “No, not yet. So much, you daughter brought up about us being rivals,” Tamago explained. “Ah, I see. Well, I will say I’m quite impressed with your tentacle length. Rivals you say, How interesting,” Precious remarked. Starting at each other, Nova, Agatha, and Wasa watched as the two gave intense stares for a moment before both started to chuckle and chat way.

“So your mom and sister work for them,” Kane questioned, spotting Ao and Demi chatting with Vio and Athena. “Yes! They are...shifty, but kind enough that it works,” Groa replied. ‘I don’t know. The guy looks like some crazy mob boss,” Kane remarked shrugging. Groa just sheepishly chuckled.

“EVERYONE! THE KING, THE PRINCE, AND THE PRIEST ARE COMING! TAKE YOUR PLACES!” one of the zora guards shouted from the edge of the ledge. Quickly getting into place, Precious moved Lulu behind the rocks so Sidon wouldn’t see her yet as she moved the veil over her face.

Lining up, the bride’s maids took to the right as the best men, Bazz, Link, and a few other royal guards, took to the left. The rest of the family and guest circled around as King Dorephan, Prince Sidon, and the zora priest came walking up. Dorephan joining the group, many looked at him with wide eye stares at his size as he was even bigger than the octo samurai. Dorephan just smiled.

Whistling to get everybody’s attention as Sidon, who was dressed in gold and silver garments instead of his usual attire, was standing in the shallow waters, the priest spoke up. “If everybody is ready, may we start the ceremony?” Nods and yeses from people, the priest spoke, “The bride then.”

Coming first, Pashmina was the little flower girl as she wore a cute little spring dress as she tossed out petals from her little basket. Following behind, Vio was was walking Lulu around the rocks and straight to Sidon as he was trying his best not to loose it right then and there.

To everybody’s agreement earlier, Lulu was indeed lovely.

White gown with a golden chain around the waist that ran down to the bottom, puff sleeves that fanned out to longer sleeves that were decorated with zora charms at the elbows, patterns of sunflowers that decorated the waist up to the chest, a white veil covered Lulu face as pearls ran down all her tentacles. Holding a bouquet of white lilies and small sunflowers, Lulu looked up to Sidon and smiled, trying not to let happy tears fall down her face. Sidon smiled back; showing off those pearly whites Lulu loved.

Finally to Sidon, Vio handed his granddaughter to her husband to be as Lulu held a hand out to him. Grabbing it softly, Sidon picked Lulu up to everybody’s surprise before snuggling her a bit after pulling the veil over and starting at her with loving and content eyes. Chuckling, Lulu kissed his cheek before Hannah called out, “Can’t you two wait???” Now everybody laughing, even Sidon and Lulu, Sidon set Lulu back down as they stood at the water’s edge as the priest spoke.

“Today...is a very special day. A day where two people, two family, two worlds come together as one. A day of peace, a day of joy, a good day for a wedding. And what a wedding it is as we see our dear Prince Sidon of Zora’s Domain marry his sweetheart, love of his life, and heroine to us all, Princess Lulu of Octo Valley,” the zora priest spoke. Hearing the priest, Lulu scooted a bit closer to Sidon as she leaned against his side; Sidon moving his arm and placing it on her shoulder. In the crowd, Doc and Wasa were patting Vio’s back as the old octoling was about to loose it there, tears already running down his face.

“Now, before we began, if anybody here has any gripes or reasons these two shouldn’t wed, speak now or hold your peace,” the priest spoke. Everyone quite, faces looked around before the priest spoke up again.

“Now, your highness,” the priest began, “Will you love and cherish this lovely lady for as long as you live?” “Always and forever with all my heart for my Little Minnow,” Sidon replied. Blushing, Lulu covered her face as small giggles came from her. Straightening back up, Lulu took a breath before the priest addressed her. “And you my dear Princess Lulu, will you love and cherish our prince for as long as you live?” the priest asked. “Till I die an old octopus. Sidon’s my heart. I’d be lost without my Sweet Prince,” Lulu replied. Hearing this, Sidon’s head tail was going a mile a minute as the priest chuckled. “Then the wedding vows.” the priest spoke.

Now turning to each other, Sidon bent down on one knee as he began. “My Little Minnow, My Pearl, Water of my Gills, from the moment we met, my heart was yours. You are so kind, caring, brave, passionate in all the things you do. More and more I got to know you, more and more my heart filled with love for you till I realized I was in love with you completely. So let me promise this to you. By marrying me, I will be your knight, your savior, your king, and your loving and devoting husband for all our days. I will cherish both you and our unborn child. I will fill your days with happiness and love. This I promise you,” Sidon spoke.

It took all of Lulu’s strength not to break down crying and hugging him as she spoke. “Sidon, you have been one of the best things to have happen to me. You love me for me, you cherish my family and my people with all your heart, you are so kinda; so loving. More and more it makes me happy to be the mother of your child. Our little life we made together. So let me promise you this. I’ll be by your side. As your queen. As your support. As your wife. As your lover. I will be all these things for you through the years. When times are hard, I’ll hold you up. When times are good and happy, I’ll be there laughing along with you. This is my promise to you. I love you Sidon and I want to spend the rest of my life with you,” Lulu spoke.

Nodding, the priest spoke, a smile on his face, “Now you have heard these two. So by your eyes and mine, I now pronounce these two husband and wife. Your highness, you may kiss your bride!”

Practically jumping into his arms, Sidon spun Lulu around before kissing her as cheers, hollers, and chapping could be heard around them.

Once everything had settled down, everybody got Lulu and Sidon ready for the ride up the waterfall; a traditional event for Zora weddings. Wiping the makeup off Lulu’s face, Precious took the veil, the bouquet, and Lulu’s heels off of her before handing her over back to Sidon. Picking her up and helping her onto his back, Lulu held on as Sidon walked into the shallows and then into the waters next to the river.

On the priest notion, Sidon started to swim up the waterfall as Lulu hung on; popping her head up from the water to watch the ones from down below before looking up in excitement. Up and up, at the top, Sidon jumped which tossed Lulu a bit up in the air as Sidon back flipped and landed on his feet before catching Lulu in his arms. Walking to the edge, Lulu waved down as everybody gave cheers before she looked out towards Hyrule. “Oh wow Sidon! It’s beautiful up here,” Lulu remarked, seeing all that she could. “It is, but doesn’t compare to you,” Sidon replies. Blushing, Lulu kissed him before both of them were giggling and laughing; both soak and wet.

As evening set in and Lulu was switched into a dry white gown with her veil and heels, the wedding party started as all guest invited celebrated the union of Prince Sidon and Princess Lulu. Or course by this point, Vio had finally broken down crying as Athena, Precious, Dorephan, and Doc were consoling the poor old octoling.

Enjoying their first slow dance as a married couple, Sidon holding Lulu in his arms as she leaned against him, many watched as others chatted away for a few hours.

Getting as much info from each other as they could, Ao and Zelda were chatting each other up as Link and Nova stood there with them sighing.

“So, now that our children are married, perhaps we should set up a system of trade,” Dorephan suggested. “That wouldn’t be a bad idea. Of course our technology is off the table, food and jewelry isn’t,” Vio suggested, having finally calmed down enough to be sociable.

“So, now all you got to worry about is your son finding someone,” Agatha remarked as Precious took a seat with the other ladies. “Ugh, that’s going to be a struggle! That boy is a handful. I would have to pray to the great kraken above for someone to be able to put up with him,” Precious sighed. Agatha just laughed.

Once seeing Sidon and Lulu down, Groa walked over to Lulu to congratulate her. “Congrats Lulu. Happy to see you wed the shark you love,” Groa remarked. Lulu giggled, “Thanks Groa. Maybe when we get a chance, I’ll have Sidon tag along to see the restaurant and let him try your cooking,” Lulu replied. “I’ll wait for that day then,” Groa chuckled.

Keeping Pashmina from running around and getting lost, Piro started to play with her as Pudge and Coraline joined in the fun. Pashmina seemed quite happy with all the play mates.

“Wait! So music literally effects you emotionally and physically?!?” Kane questioned surprised. Nodding, Sam replied, “Yes. I guess that’s why there hasn’t been any music playing.” “Yeah, Lulu said little to no music cause of some of the guest. I guess that’s why,” Kane replied, hands behind his head.

“LULU! COME ON! LET’S DO THE BOUQUET TOSSING!” Atarime called out. Hearing this, Lulu came over as Atarime handed over the flowers, and all the ladies behind her, watched as Lulu turned around and tossed the bouquet into the air. Landing in the mix of them, the bouquet wound up in the hands of Tartar as everybody around her gave giggles. Tartar just blushed.

Giggling herself, Lulu was scooped up by Sidon as he spun her before bring her over to the wedding cake at the food table to cut it. Setting her down, as people and zoras gathered, one of the zoras brought a long knife. As Sidon held Lulu’s hands, they both cut the wedding cake together as everybody around them gave joyous laughs and cheers. Taking the first two slices as Sidon picked Lulu up again, each gave a bit to one another before kissing once more.

As things were winding down, Lulu decided to take up sorting the wedding gifts as Octavia and Max came over to the table Lulu was at. “What’cha doing?” Max asked. “I want to sort the wedding gifts by the families. That way it will be easier when Sidon and I open them up. Care to help me out you two?” Lulu replied. Nodding, all three went to work when Max noticed something.

“Hey Lulu, this one doesn’t have a name on it,” Max remarked; holding up a very small and plan looking box. It indeed had no name on it nor no wrapping. Just a box and lid. “What? That’s odd! I know I mentioned to everybody to put their names on them so why is this one missing one? Is there a tag or something somewhere that fell off?” Lulu questioned. Looking around, Octavia shook her head. “No tag anywhere. How odd, it’s such a plan box too. Is there anything in it? Someone might have just left this here for no reason,” Octavia replied.

Shaking the box a little, there seemed to be something inside of it. Deciding to see and perhaps figure out where this came from, Lulu took the lid off as she pulled out-

“A...a mask?” Max questioned. “It’s so plan looking,” Octavia remarked. “It has my name on it in the inside,” Lulu replied, “How odd. What is this for?” Turning to look at the others, Max called out, “Hey, did anybody give Lulu a funny mask as a gift?” when Lulu decided to place it on her face.

“AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHEEEEEHH,” Lulu screamed. “LULU!!!” Octavia screamed as she watched Lulu hit the floor and came rushing towards her. Hearing her scream, everybody came barreling over; Sidon the first to reach her.

“LULU! LULU, WHAT’S WRONG?” Sidon panicked before noticing something. As everybody came around, they all noticed it.

Long blond hair covered Lulu’s face as Sidon got her to sit up and lean against him. Looking up at him and then at the others, all eyes went wide as blue eyes with no face mask looked at them. Then she looked at herself before feeling the hair that sat on her head instead of her tentacles. “Wha,” Lulu went before looking back up to Sidon. Sidon’s face was flushed at seeing Lulu like this.

“Holy Kraken. What happen to her?” Kane remarked. “She’s-” Piro went. “HUMAN,” Ao and Mr. T remarked.

Indeed, somehow, Lulu had turned human; Hylian to be exact. “Both of you, what was going on when this happened?” Sidon questioned and demanded. Straightening up, Octavia replied first. “We were just helping Lulu sort the wedding gifts when we found this plan gift,” Octavia replied in panic. “Yeah, it had this plan looking mask in it and I was going to ask if anybody sent a mask,” Max replied. “When I just wanted to see if it fit my face,” Lulu finally spoke.

“A magic mask,” Zelda spoke up, fist smacking hand in realization, “It must have been a magic mask. Magic mask have magic on them that can turn one into whatever the mask was designed for.”

“Then this one was designed to turn someone human?” Vio questioned. “It would seem so,” Zelda replied back. “Well, will it come off?” Precious questioned. Walking over, Zelda bent down and check the side of Lulu’s face; much to Lulu’s panic and flinching. “Ah, here we go. There are groves here. Alright Lulu, hold still,” Zelda stated.

Starting to pull, Lulu screamed in pain. “NO! STOP!!! THAT HURTS,” Lulu shouted. Stopping for a second, everyone watched as Lulu started crying. Comforting her, Sidon held Lulu close. “She’s not going to turn back to normal till that mask comes off,” Zelda stated to Sidon. “I know. But I can’t bare to see her hurting,” Sidon replied. “I understand but we don’t know the effects of it yet. Sooner we get it off the better,” Zelda remarked as Lulu looked back at her. “Give it another shot?” Zelda asked. “…...I guess,” Lulu sniffled.

Trying again, sadly, things were no different as Lulu screamed again and pushed Zelda to let go. Now sobbing from the pain, Sidon held her close as everybody had concerned faces. “Well, shell, what the kraken are y'all going to do about this?” Ao questioned. “It needs to come off but how?” Athena asked concerned.

“Move!”

All looking around, Wasa, who had been quite most of the day, came up and bent down to look at Lulu. Looking up at him, Lulu was surprised when Wasa started to wipe the tears away before petting her head. Calming down, Lulu seemed to be comforted by Wasa petting her. “Uncle Wasa?” Lulu questioned.

“You really should just retired those cuttlegear duelies of yours,” Wasa spoke.

“Whaaa? Uncle Wasa, what does that have to do wit-AAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!”

In one quick move, Wasa grabbed the back of the mask and pulled it upward and off Lulu’s face as she was distracted by his comment. Tumbling a bit backwards in Sidon’s arms, he grabbed onto her and smothered her. “WASA! THE SHELL?” Doc screamed. Holding the mask up, Wasa replied, “It’s off.”

Seeing the mask in Wasa’s hand, everybody looked as in Sidon’s grasp, Lulu turned back to normal; tentacles and face mask returning as she looked back at them; some blue light fading off of her. “Ah, thank goodness,” Athena sighed. Handing the mask to Zelda, Wasa watched as Zelda looked it over. “Oh yes, indeed a magical mask. Though these are quite rare now. I wonder where this came from,” Zelda remarked. “HEY! There’s a note here and another box just like it,” Octavia called out as she held the note up and pointed to the other plan looking box; much bigger than the other one. Walking over, Vio took the note from Octavia as he read it out loud.

“To the newly weds,

May these help you two in your travels between your worlds. I know being what you are has been a struggle for you two as one does not blend into the other’s society so let me give you something as a proper thank you for all you have done.

The Creator”

“Ah, the creator sent them?” Tartar questioned. “Seems so,” Vio replied, “Octavia, open the other box.”

Nodding, Octavia opened it and pulled another mask, much larger as black rings circled around the eyes. “Ah, Sidon’s name is on this one,” Octavia remarked. “So what do you think that one is for?” Precious questioned. “Well, one way to find out,” Sidon stated.

Walking over, Octavia handed it to Sidon as he took a quick breath, before placing it on.

Blue light enveloped around Sidon as to everybody’s shock. When the light faded, golden eyes looked at blue as a blush came over Lulu’s face. “Ah! He’s-” Demi started. “A sharkling if I ever did see one,” Vio stated.

Indeed he was as red scales became red clothes with open cut sleeves as he garments became slightly loose and his shoulder finds became shoulder pads. A human shape hand was placed against Lulu’s cheek as she grabbed and rubbed her cheek in his palm. “Not bad look for yah,” Lulu chuckled. Looking over himself, Sidon didn’t seemed to bothered. His head tail still there, his face matched more of an inklings as he stood up and picked Lulu up to hold. “Not bad indeed,” Sidon replied.

“Ah, that must be it,” Emmy remarked, “This creator person must have given you the masks so you could blend in with each world. Lulu to be human and Sidon to be a sharkling.”

Looking at each other, then back to the others, Lulu watched in surprised as Sidon moved Lulu around in his arms to hold her in one and using the other, quickly ripping the mask off. To everybody’s shock as they saw Sidon flinch but change back, Sidon gave a smile before handing the mask to Zelda. “I’ll look into these more for you two but if what your friend has said is true Lulu, I believe these will be more than handy for you two,” Zelda stated.

Nodding, Sidon replied to everybody, “Well, the night is still young my friends. And there are more gifts to see. So how about it!” Chuckling, Lulu nodded as Max rushed over and grabbed another gift.

“This was fun. It was nice meeting you all,” Demi remarked as the celebrations were over. “Yeah, we should actually hang out some time,” Kane remarked, “I see why Lulu likes you so much. Can’t believe you’re actually Dedf1sh.”

“When I get a chance, I’ll write down recipe for you,” Athena stated. “Oh, I would love that. I’m sure Deva would find great use for it,” Nova replied.

“If yours were a bit longer, I would show you how to do a six point tie,” Tamago remarked, “That’s alright. But you can show me how you do that bun you are wearing right now,” Precious replied, “Will do,” Tamago chuckled.

“So how long will it be before we can see Lulu on turf again?” Atarime asked. “Once’s she laid the egg, she should be good to go,” Hannah remarked before noticing something, “HEY! Where is Lulu and Sidon?”

Sure enough, the two were nowhere to be seen as the newly wedded couple had slipped off to the top of the Eastern Reservoir Lake. Floating along the waters, Lulu laid on Sidon’s stomach as she watched her husband; arms crossed behind his head with his eyes closed.

“Hmm, what’cha you thinking about?” Lulu hummed. “Just how tomorrow will be our first day as a married couple. I can’t wait,” Sidon replied. Smiling bright, Lulu laid her head down on his stomach as Sidon moved an arm around to lay it across her. Floating along, things were peaceful.

“Tomorrow will be the start of our lives together. I couldn’t ask for anything more.” Lulu thought as soon sleep took a hold of her and dreams of the future floated through her mind.

I think you are way too forgiving of Emilio's ex, he should be serving a prison sentence for what he did. It was evil and unacceptable and it's weird that you still draw him as cute when he is a rapist

I want to apologize because I despise posting drama on this blog. I would much rather talk to this person in a direct message rather than publicly. Nevertheless, I have to address this.

I will put my answer under the cut, so that people who rather not see drama will be able to scroll by.

Let me answer each section of your ask properly.

“I think you’re way too forgiving for Emilio’s ex,”

First, let me ask… What did you hope to achieve by sending this to me? Cause all this sounds to me is that you don’t like the way I do my story. Which, is perfectly fine. You don’t HAVE to like it, just like, you don’t HAVE to tell me you don’t like it.

And to add, your criticism isn’t very constructive. You gave me no insight or ways to improve my comic. You just told me your opinion and (I’m guessing) expected me to drop everything and change it.

This is how criticisms work:

“I like how you expressed Trent here! I just don’t know if it will contribute enough to the plot… Maybe we can find a substitute.”

This is you:

“You’re too nice to Trent and its weird. I hate it.”

“he should be serving a prison sentence for what he did.”

I agree, but it isn’t what I want in my story yet. I thought I explained why, but I’ll re-explain in detail for you.

The only way for him to go to prison is if Emilio filed charges against Trent. But, typically, rape victims don’t IMMEDIATELY go to the police. Why? Cause they blame themselves and/or they’re ashamed. There are people fighting for a law in the US to stop putting a limit on when people can claim rape, BECAUSE RAPE VICTIMS WAIT A LONG TIME BEFORE PRESSING CHARGES. It’s a hard, HARD process for someone to go through.

Plus, people in abusive relationships are typically insecure. Confident people don’t stay in abusive relationships for long because they know they don’t deserve it. My goal is to have Emilio become more confident in himself and finally press charges against Trent. There’s a term for this; Character Development. And every story needs character development… Sorry to burst your bubble.

I assume you are pretty young to not know this? If so, I would advise to look into a subject before taking a stance. I don’t appreciate being accused of being too soft on a rapist.

Just a little bonus; if Emilio was confident and got Trent in jail, there would be no comic. The whole conflict starts with Trent walking up to Emilio after a turf war. If that disappeared, I don’t know where the comic would’ve gone; Or, if it would even start.

First of all, I draw Trent the way I designed him. Sorry, that’s not going to change. I’m the artist… I’m allowed to be creative, even with douchey characters. I’m not going to draw him like scribbles cause he’s shitty. Not all artists work like that.

Plus, Trent being “cute” in your eyes isn’t my fault. Beauty and likeness is all from perception, your own mind causes that. Someone could easily say, “I love Trent! I think he’s cute and he’s my type,” as another could say, “Ew he’s just awful, I hate Trent”. Art has, and still is, been about the viewer. I have a certain goal and perception in my art, but it doesn’t mean we share the same one.

YOU decide it’s cute, I just provide the content. Don’t blame me for your own perceptions.

In conclusion, your ask is unusable. You brought no information that could help me improve and had little to no information to back up your statements. Therefore, I don’t understand why you would send it other than you want to share your opinion.

I would like you to put yourself in an artists shoes before you send an ask. I work very hard to keep this comic weekly without pay. I put up a little silly comic and the first ask I received was this. I would advise you to think before you send an ask. Thank you.

☪️ —— Her family is a bit of a mixed bag, and I’m not fond of the nuts. I focus primarily on her grandmother, her father, and her mother. She is an only child.

We’ll go down the line. Bourbon Charbonneau is where her changed name comes from. She is her paternal grandmother, and presumably deceased. A war hero from the Great Turf War hundreds of years ago, she rose from the ashes purely out of spite. While size was supposedly not her forte, she more than made up with it in range, being an excellent sniper racking up kills that extend vastly beyond the weak threat that was her height.

She was born with nothing, and made something, despite it being grounded in once amicable blood. With the supposed loss of her eye, she retained her wealth by war profiteering. This money seldom went to frivolous thrifts, instead paying back to the slums she hailed from.

Her son, Clair Charbonneau, was born without a father figure in his life — not that he needed one. The idea to have him alone was indeed Bourbon’s idea; she needed no one, she believed, but she wanted a child to spread her riches to, long after she was gone.

A shame he put it to bad use. As he grew, his fondness of money did too. Far too tired to police her son ( she quite heavily believed she did no wrong in raising him, and that money itself corrupted an innocent mind ), Bourbon, once he hit eighteen, opted to leave his life. He found no issue with this — she had left him a hefty sum and told him that he should try spending wisely, for once in his life.

To his credit, he did — he invested in manufacturing and in Cuttlegear, becoming a large stakeholder and supplier of their weaponry. Like mother, like son, he’d insist — war profiteering soon became his life. Though he never once stepped on the field himself ( even Turf Wars, when they had become a sport, were perceived as grotesque in his eyes ), fatter pockets tempted him — enough to secretly aid Octarians behind the company’s back, creating a need for new armaments.

With a never-ending cycle of weapon necessity, his bank account grew comfortable. He invested in Custom, another heavy armaments manufacturer, and sat pretty while doing as much damage as possible — as many do, using Custom weapons.

On an extended visit to Wuzeiguo, he fell for the daughter of diplomat, named Chen Meiling. Her mother ran the Nouveau Corporation of Wuzeiguo, while her father extended their relations outward. Meiling was an artist, enthralled by the lighter side of things. Multilingual, and generally seen as a TCK, she was amused by the foreigner’s attempts at wooing her, for oblivious she was not. It was only when he ( poorly ) spoke her tongue that she opted to fluently speak his.

While business was indeed in her blood, Meiling preferred to enjoy the passions of life. Her designs and blueprints for Nouveau’s weaponry seldom go used ( oh, how an artist scorns their own work! ) but her craft found use elsewhere.

There was an initial distrust between this man and Meiling — though she enjoyed the variety of people that constant travel allotted, his weariness of self-detail piqued interest. It wouldn’t be the first time someone came solely to invest or benefit themselves down the line — Nouveau was by no means a start-up company, but their general demographic encompassed many influential children, and allowing them to enlist amidst wartime was far from their minds.

Proximity wore down her guard, and she ultimately reciprocated his feelings. Their eventual marriage ( and legal renaming to Celeste Charbonneau ) marked her step up in the world, for her mother transferred her to Inkopolis to become the CEO of the Nouveau Corporation there.

Still, Celeste was one for her family — they would occasionally travel back to Wuzeiguo, to check on how they fared, and explain standings at the company. Clair would oft follow, though his ability to speak their language hadn’t improved ( why bother, when he found their own tongue to be fine enough? ). One such visit informed her family that she was carrying, and another found that her child was to be born urgently. Without time to leave, Chen Xiuying was born, premature and silent.

With little diagnosis as to explain why, they hung around Wuzeiguo, checking to be sure that naming her wasn’t for naught ( Clair was quite the pessimist — Celeste harbored disdain for that ). Once they were given the okay, she was raised temporarily in Wuzeiguo, only to return to Inkopolis when her health improved.

There, she was renamed Bonbon Charbonneau ( to Celeste’s growing irritation — homesickness began to quickly settle, with the birth of her child ).

Living in a mansion close to the city, their newborn’s room was soundproofed. In fact, Clair had decided ( single-handedly ) that their child would be raised deaf, for fear of her illnesses. Celeste, opposed to the idea, had grown tired and complacent — fine. Many of their lies, white as they might have intended to be, were to further a world where everyone spoke in hands. Bonbon grew up believing that the world was silent, indeed.

This was not the only decree Clair placed upon her — she was not to meet with other children, who might be far too rough for his delicate little girl. As such, he seldom rough-housed or allowed her to do much of anything on her own, while Celeste would steal her away to play ( to his chagrin, for he believed her to be made of glass, not ink ).

Ultimately, she grew up to appreciate her father more than her mother, for when time came that she was informed that they had been lying to her, he was quick to pin the blame on Celeste. Her mother took it easily — she knew that, at this time, the man she had fallen for was fragile. He could not handle their daughter’s vociferous rage, and thus would crack under pressure. Patiently, she allowed for her own child’s hatred to boil her alive, smiling all the while. He would soon get his due reward.

The couple had long fallen out of love, but come Bonbon’s eventual moving out, they had a mutual fear for her naivete — especially when she completely cut herself off from their riches. It was with comfort that they heard their daughter’s name in bright lights, particularly for Celeste, whose heart would always remain in the arts. Clair, on the other hand, was simply ecstatic she had dropped the silly notion of going to war for his grandmother’s honor.

That was, until she returned, skeptical of his gains. Snooping about would find that she located her birth certificate — which clearly defined that she was, unlike first thought, not born in Inkopolis like he had insisted. Having an extreme loathing for lies, she dug deeper — and found more of his shady dealings, on top of their hospital arrangements for her in her youth.

Exasperated, she called him out on it — in public court, where he was to be tried for nigh treason.

When declared guilty, he plead for solitary confinement — a deal they accepted with Bonbon’s push. Bitter, she wanted him to feel as she did as a child — isolated in sound and comfort. Yes, this would mean that those who he encouraged to fight couldn’t beat him senseless, but she’d grown tired of battle as a whole — and would rather him rot alone.

Her mother, after the trial, explained everything to a reasonably devastated Bonbon. Celeste, however, was effervescent — their assets now belonged to her, and the first decree she’d enact was the reversal of her name. Others soon would follow — she took over the shares of the Custom brand that her husband ( soon to be ex ) possessed, and pulled out from supporting Cuttlegear’s actions.

Striving for a world where the species oppressed by her ex’s actions could co-exist peacefully, Meiling now supports any and all endeavors above ground by Octarians. Art, once again, has become her life, and she actively brings artists from Wuzeiguo to experience life in Inkopolis — in the hopes that her daughter can too share their rich culture.

So, I Finished reading Legend of Korra: Turf Wars.

Recommendation to fans who are UK residents like myself: if you’re still waiting until August 8th -10th, try looking a comic shop as opposed to a more mainstream retailer. I’d preordered mine at Forbidden Planet, went to pick it up on the 28th, and they had copies out on display for sale. In fact, any fan in any country, if a comic shop is an option for you, go for it.

I don’t want to risk spoiling it for anyone who hasn’t read it yet, so I’m going to add a ‘Keep Reading’ feature, and have it tagged to be on the safe side. Just wanted to express a couple of viewpoints about the comic. Expressing my opinion... on Tumblr... why do I feel like this isn’t going to end well :/

I can’t stress enough if you’ve yet to read it, SPOILER WARNING! Keep reading at your own risk.

What I Adored/Loved:

Like I even need to say it; KORRA AND ASAMI! Seeing them together, all the little looks they gave eachother, the interactions, the dialogue, the kisses. It was sweet, cute, funny, and heartwarming. It’s all I could ask for, just seeing them so happy, after what they’ve both gone through since LoK began, and getting far more freedom to express their feelings than the show would allow. Cannot wait to see more of that expanded on in the next books.

Speaking of interactions, dialogues, and looks, I think every character during some of the most ‘stand out’ moments in the comic really spoke a lot more than words ever could. Irene Koh has clearly proven herself to be highly talented at depicting the feelings and emotions of characters through expressions and body language, and i’m eager for more she has to offer not just in the continuation of Turf Wars, but in her own work. What can I say, I like analyzing the subtle features within art. Some of my favourite examples, i’ll list as seperate points;

Kya’s suspicious/curious little glances as she suspects something’s up between the two leading ladies.

Tenzin’s enthusiastic smile/look of joy at the evacuee camp when he see’s Korra and Asami have returned. And looking so proud of Korra after she’s addressed the people. She even referenced a past advice quote from him (“Change can be good or bad, depending on your point of view.”). Being her mentor and also - dare I say - like a second father to her, it all feels just so right for his character and gives me a major case of the feels.

Mako during Korra and Asami’s reveal to their friends. I’ve said it before that regardless of my pairing preferences, I like him as a character, and while I suspected this was going to take him off guard at first, he’d be supportive because that’s the kind of loyal friend he is. And his reactions throughout that scene were not just priceless, but appropriate (considering the past position he’s been in ;) ). Like much of what I’m saying throughout this ‘review’ it’s all just my personal opinion, but if you’ve read the comic and are reading this, look closely at Mako’s expressions throughout that scene. Doesn’t it look like that - in his head - he’s thinking the following: Whoah, What just happened? > Well, how about that. Good for them > Wait, are we all actually expressing reactions now? Should I say something > OH DAMN! Ummm. Uhhhh. What do I say?

Speaking of Mako, his skills as a detective are my favourite aspects of his character, so it’s great to see him back on the job and not letting that still injured arm of his slow him down.

Mako and Bolin: Brothers in Armed Forces :P Adored the Brothers together, and smart move getting team Avatar 2.0 back together before the major fight towards the end. So sweet to watch Mako still viewing Bolin as his goofy sidekick/younger sibling throughout, only to embrace how well they work together side by side during the climax. “Thanks for the save -- Partner”. And I can’t help but be all smiles as i’m continued to be reminded how Bo has grown and that there’s a formiddable fighter behind the goofiness. Want a good way to pwn a villain? Break his Weapons!

What I thought was Great:

Tokuga. I didn’t know what to make of him at first, but I began to see him shine trough as a villain as I watched his fight scenes and took a closer look at his fighting style. Notice how one panel focuses on how he snags Mako’s sling with one of his hook blades; he saw a weak point and exploited it! Perfect villain behaviour. And look who came prepared with Gas Grenades and Throwing Knives. Add his little ‘spirit infection’ at the climax into the mix, and now I await great things from him.

Some extra exploration into the lore/myths of the Avatar Universe. In this case the four nations’s different views of same sex relationships. Now, I’m not going to talk about how this is significant to/relates to representation of LGTBQ relationships - as a straight, it’s not my place to say - but as someone who’s list of Kryptonites includes lore/myths/history within fictional worlds (*cough* Dragon Age *cough* Mass Effect *cough* Lord of the Rings) I just find extra details like that fun and fascinating.

That one of my other favourite pairings - Bopal - is still going and got some recognition (if only minor). Bolin even proposed a double date with Korra and Asami! Oh, by Raava, please make this happen! If not, looks like i’m going to have to get my arse back in to gear with new drawings. Already been feeling a burst of inspiration after reading this!

Zhu-li takin’ charge. Like in Book 4, she’s no longer settling with just being Varrick’s assistant, as she tries to keep things under control at the evacuee camp and starts collabing with Asami for a solution. And if the teaser description, on the preorder pages I’ve seen on Amazon, for the plot for Turf Wars Part 2 is anything to go by, she’s only going to get more awesome!

What I feel indifferent towards:

Some characters either missing or getting ‘backgrounded’. E.g. Where’s Bumi? Where’s Varrick? Or Kai? That being said, I realise that this is only the first part and there may be more chances for characters to make a proper appearance. And in hindsight I have no expereience within the comic industry so I can’t pretend to understand the process of writing a story, working within limits, and not to overload it with more content than it needs.

Would’ve been nice to see a little more ‘page-time’ with characters than they got. Such as Tenzin, Lin and Opal (still having fingers crossed for that double date). But like the previous point: I need to remember that this is only the start. I’m just being honest and I don’t wish to sound ungrateful - espeically with all the things I listed which I loved - but in the unlikely event that anyone who actually worked on this comic actually reads this, I apologize and hope you don’t take what I say too much to heart.

Korra getting mad with Tonraq after the initial celebration of her and Asami’s comming out to her parents. I silly little thing to nit-pick at, I know, but it just makes me sad seeing Korra and her Dad fight *feeling horrible Book 2 flashbacks* and so soon after the whole family was happy for her and Asami. On the other hand, it’s understandable that he - as a parent - would feel cautious, it does lead towards the afformentioned exploration on same sex relationships within the Avatar Lore, and is all in keeping with Korra’s character. I love her, but she can be quite the hothead. I just hope that in one of the next comics, there’ll be a forgiveness/making up moment between father and daughter.

What I didn’t Like/Hated:

Wonyong Keum. Prick. Yep, that pretty much sums it up.

Raiko being a moron... again! I’m not gonna lie, I’ve never been much of a fan of politician characters for petty reasons. But Raiko is just one of those guys that just keeps finding ways to aggrivate me. What was it he said: “Avatar Korra... so you’re finally done gallivanting around the Spirit World?”. Said the guy who has previously banned her from Republic City, then acted as if they were good after her poisioning, and invited the annoying press whilst Korra was trying to work on a solution to the Spirit Vine issue at the start of Book 3. After all that she’s done to try and help the city up to this point...you ungrateful sod. I’m just gonna say it now: ZHU-LI FOR PRESIDENT!

That I now have to wait until January until the next part. Thought i’d close this with a joke ^^;
