We are not judging how bad the movie is, we are judging which adapted the book the worst. There are good movies that are bad adaptions.

Animorphs:

Didn't have the budget to do literally anything the books were doing, and it shows. Also the central theme of the books wasn't even touched on.

A low-budget kids' show was absolutely the worst and most embarrassing way to adapt a semi-serialized, somewhat serious (but, y'know, in a YA way) drama about war and how it changes those who participate in it. It never goes into the ethical questions or moral issues that the original book series brings up, and the violence is toned down a lot. They just didn't have the money for the special effects you'd need for a story with so many different alien races (Taxxons, one of the main types of alien employed by the enemy yeerks, are never even mentioned!), nor for the animal training/handling for so many different species that the characters are constantly morphing into. I get that they were doing the best they could for the time and medium, but it ended up being a giant embarrassment. :(

Only one season, poorly written

Tales from Earthsea:

I don't think it could have been better, but it was just so off from from the books it was mainly drawing its inspiration from (I mean, I had no interest in seeing that weird weaver guy decide to off himself in the boat, but still).

Studio Ghibli is the perfect studio to capture the Le Guin vibe and yet Goro torched it so hard for no reason

To give credit where it is due, the film has some good settings and animation. Unfortunately, its beauty is only on the surface, and it is the worst Studio Ghibli movie I’ve seen. (I’ve seen almost all of them but Earwig and the Witch.) The plot is a collage of random bits of context from the first four books of the series, as well as its own stuff. It really is not the same story at all. I may have enjoyed it more if I had seen it as a child before reading the books, but not covering all the events exactly isn’t the only issue, it’s just worse. It takes the moral complexity and sensibility of the original and turns it into a typical fantasy war between good and evil (the Japanese title even translates to Ged’s War Chronicles) with emphasis on physical violence, in which evil is personified as a goth queer-coded villain whose death resolves everything. It completely misses the point of the books, which gives no such simple answers and is more focused on the darkness within everyone than an external battle. Where is the nuance? It also whitewashes everyone: most of the characters in the book are dark-skinned, but in the movie…

I was also bitter that they did my favourite character, Tehanu/Therru, dirty. She’s supposed to be horribly scarred and disfigured on half her body and reviled by people as a monster but in the movie she’s just a pretty girl with a red mark on her face. In the books, she doesn’t appear until the fourth book, Tehanu, which takes place after Lebannen is grown up and ruling a kindgom, and in which she is a mostly-nonverbal child. But here she’s aged up and thrown into the earlier story to give the protagonist a love interest and the film has him stay with them so it can focus on their romance. Even though a plot-relevant part of his character as well is his lack of interest in women and not settling into a relationship despite the people’s wishes.

Basically, they whitewashed, heteronormatized, macho-ified, and de-nuanced the narrative, and also took out the feminism.

On top of this, trying to cram the whole series into one movie is just not a good idea, and it would have been better to just decide on one book to adapt and do more justice. And yet they still added in so much that didn’t happen. When you have that much material to cover, you don’t have time or budget to be putting other things in, mate. Turning four books into one results both in a mess. Abridgment is one thing; taking particular aspects of different parts of the timeline and combining them in different ways is another. It doesn’t make a lot of sense. It’s in an unfortunate middle area where it doesn’t follow the source material but also doesn’t give enough context that people unfamiliar with the source understand. For Earthsea fans, it’s infuriating; for others, it’s confusing. Also, why did they name it after the fifth book, which is a short story collection that it doesn’t reference whatsoever?

The failure of the movie is upsetting because the books are sooo good. Yet, it was the highest-grossing Japanese movie of the year, and did win a couple awards… The Bunshun Kiichigo awards for “Worst Director” and “Worst Movie”.

HOW ITS GONNA WORK- I have made a grid of aesthetics that will be the theme of the piece. Basically I'll draw a characters in an outfit that matches the aesthetic provided. They will get a hat, a bag and a piece of jewellery and I'll try to make it match their personality if I can! (For example, if Dylan got the Space Aesthetic I'd go more sciency. For Dawkins, more sci-fi show. For Dolly, cool aliens!)

HOW DO WE PICK THE CHARACTERS TO AN AESTHETIC?! - I'll be holding polls to decide now that Tumblr can do that. We have an A team and a B team. So we'll be voting on two Aesthetics at a time. I'll post the Aesthetic and a description so you know what to expect.

WHAT ARE THE AESTHETICS?!

Descriptions

(Please note that aesthetics can very from person to person on what they mean, and what they include!These are just my takes.)

Pastel- The pastel aesthetic is just as straightforward as its name, focusing on everything that's less saturated and in lighter hues. In particular, the word “pastel” refers to a soft and delicate shade of a color produced by adding more white.

Vaporwave- The Vaporwave aesthetic incorporates early Internet imagery, late 1990s web design, glitch art, and cyberpunk tropes, as well as anime, Greco-Roman statues, and 3D-rendered objects. VHS degradation is another common effect seen in vaporwave art.

Dark - Dark aesthetic covers a wide range of different things. If its dark and edgy , it can fall under this same system. Sometimes there's horror elements, but it can also be cutesy. All you really need is black, greys, and sparse uses of blood red and neon green. Some spikes can't hurt either!

Neon- The Neon aesthetic (Or Glowwave.) Is the use of bright, almost glowing colors on darker scenes. Reflective surfaces, sparkles and bright 'neon' pink can dominate this aesthetic.

Pastel Goth- Pastel Goth is an aesthetic that is a result of mixing goth or grunge with the sweet pastel elements of the kawaii aesthetic. Think if horror was cute, or cute was horrific if that's easier. Lots of black and pastel colours here.

Punk-Punk aesthetics determine the type of art punks enjoy, which typically has underground, iconoclastic, and satirical sensibilities. Punk can be as messy or minimalist as you want. It also tends to be more focused on the handmade, reused and recycled. Newspaper collages, safety pin, metal spikes, oh yeah!

Black and white- Contrast. That is the core of the Black and White aesthetic. Using only grayscale to convey detailed images. Tends to be fancy, simple and clean!

Rainbow- COLOUR, COLOUR, COLOUR! Rainbow is all colour all the time! With clear, fun shapes and fun splatters, rainbow is just... colourful fun.

Space- Spacecore is a type of aesthetic that is centered around astronomy, stars and planets. It can also be called astrocore or cosmic core. Spacecore uses lots of stars and planet type things in clothing or decor. Many spacecore aesthetics will have pictures of the sun, the moon or the stars.

Cottagecore- Cottagecore is an aesthetic that celebrates simple living, particularly in the countryside. It encourages a lifestyle rooted in traditional skills—like baking bread, gardening, and sewing your own clothes. Basically you live in a modern day Jeremiah Puddleduck book.

Pale- Palewave centers around muted and pale colors with a very relaxed and comfy vibe. Think light, easy, breezy and gentle designs. Nothing pops out right off the bat in this muted aesthetic.

Kidcore- Bright colours, cartoon designs, nostalgia, and fun! Its somewhat similar to rainbow, but you can't escape consumerism in this aesthetic usually! Toys, games, anything to do with just being a kid and enjoying life is included!

If you were to teach a lesson in a creative writing course, what advice would you offer to help writers differentiate literature from stories that seem primed for adaptation into film and television, or from the prevalent cinematic writing style that's hard to avoid? How does a writer encourage a reader to choose books over screens?

I believe you touched upon this in a previous discussion, possibly in reference to your hopes for Major Arcana. I also have a vague recollection of a piece by James Wood on Flaubert, where he highlighted how Flaubert pioneered a particular style of descriptive writing that veered away from traditional literature and leaned more towards the visual. My memory on this is a bit hazy, though.

Yes, in Wood's "Half Against Flaubert" (in The Broken Estate) he criticizes Flaubert for developing of style of pregnantly chosen visual detail that easily coarsens into mannerism (in literary fiction) or formula (in pulp fiction) and that looks forward to film.

I don't think fiction needs to be wholly purified of the cinematic or the dramatic. The novel is always generically impure; trying to purify it can lead to tediously programmatic avant-gardism (cf. the gradual subtraction of the entirety of the world over the course of Beckett's oeuvre). But it can do many things unavailable to cinema and should generally be doing at least one of these:

—fiction can depend for its effect on the style, voice, or character of the narrator as much as or more than even what the narrator describes (novel as performance of voice: Huckleberry Finn, True Grit; novel as unreliable narration: Ishiguro's early books; novel as both: Lolita)

—fiction can compress, telescope, summarize, and therefore proliferate tales beyond what visual media can usually accomplish (Balzac, Kafka, Borges, Singer, Bolaño)

—fiction can dramatize the inner workings of subjectivity and consciousness (Ulysses, Mrs. Dalloway, Herzog, A Single Man, Beloved)

—fiction can be discursive or essayistic, in narrative or in dialogue, and therefore convey many more ideas than visual media can (novel as essay or analysis: The Scarlet Letter, Billy Budd, Death in Venice; novel as Platonic dialogue: Dostoevsky, Mann, Lawrence, Murdoch)

—fiction can encompass every type of verbal media into a stylistic collage that takes on much of the culture or creates an air of authenticity or provokes parodic humor (Dracula, Ulysses, Pale Fire, Possession, Cloud Atlas)

—fiction can offer, even in the midst of visual description, all the pleasures of language itself, whether figuration (metaphor, metonymy) or sound (alliteration, rhythm, even rhyme), and can even be a pure exercise of verbal style (early Joyce, Hemingway, Faulkner, Bellow, Didion, McCarthy, DeLillo)

It's probably at this point less about competing with screens—a lot of people now read on screens anyway—than about setting up feedback loops between screen cultures and literary cultures: for example, what we're doing here.

Hello!! Yes ofc, I've never listened to this artist or done this type of thing before so it was REALLY fun n interesting to do, I really enjoyed it :D (prepare urself for a LONG post)

I just now finished listening to "we found two dead swans and filled their bodies with flowers" and I acc really liked it!! I'm a sucker for indie/acoustic/bedroom pop/whatever else it's called music (basically cavetown n dodie, my beloveds <3) so I really vibed with it! It was short but very much to the point with the lyrics. It's hard to explain but they're kinda abstract yet so clear in the story/message?? Idk but I LOVEEE lyrics like that so tysm for that song rec :))) I love the overall simplicity of the song too- it's just a guy, his acoustic guitar, and a few short but sweet lyrics. No fancy autotune or vocal effects, just pure vibes (no hate to artists who do use those effects tho) It's very comforting and I would def listen to it again :D (8/10)

Here's my opinion on the rest of the album too :) (I didn't listen to the whole album just half so I might be wrong but yeh :>)

Overall, the rest of the songs I listened to were kinda rock-ish (hopefully that's the right word) with a sprinkling of calm/acoustic songs which I really love. I don't really listen to this genre of music but I really enjoyed it!! I noticed that the songs are all REALLY short too- like I think around 2-3 mins on average- which is really interesting to me and I acc kinda like it bc it kinda makes listening to the whole album a big cohesive experience if ykwim?? Instead of like a bunch of different 3-4 minute songs that kinda have similar vibes but not really and are more just a collection of individual pieces rather than a big music collage like this album (in my experience ofc). I feel like the whole album could be like a really chill background music to read, draw, write, or anything in general!! At first I wasn't sure I liked it bc I wasn't used to the whole loud bg music, soft vocal thing, but after a while it really grew on me tbh :> Personally I feel that the lyrics aren't really the central focus of most the songs, it's really more geared towards the music/instruments, which again, even tho it got some getting used to, I acc really liked bc it's like you can appreciate the artist's musical abilities first and then their lyric-writing abilities; which is really what music is ab now that I think ab it. Overall, I think I'd rate the whole album an 8/10- it truly was a really fun, interesting, and cool experience!! :)

And this is my opinion of each individual song I listened to~

Everything is fine: The loud bg music and sorta muffled vocals are really new and interesting to me since, yk, it's usually the other way around. It's almost unnerving in a way, but I think that's almost the point, since the lyrics seem to be ab feelings of dread and unease, but ur trying to convince urself (or maybe others) that everything's fine (the title lol). It was fun and interesting to listen to but idrt I'd listen to it again bc it kinda made me feel uncomfy for some reason lol (7/10 tho bc it was still really good c:)

Don't like me: This had very similar vibes to the 1st song- loud music and soft/muffled vocals, but it wasn't unnerving at all. Perhaps bc of the lyrics, but it came off as more angry/upset than uneasy or panicky. It's also really cool how he was basically able to repeat the same lyrics/melody for 3 minutes but it was still really vibey- I didn't get bored at all!! I would prob listen to this again tbh, I see myself having a private dance party or doing chaotic things to this song sdfghjk (8.5/10)

Bad news: This one also had loud bg music and soft/muffled vocals (I wonder if that's just how his music is?), but the vocals were def slightly louder. It's really similar to "Everything is fine" in the meaning, but it's more confident kinda imo. Like the 1st one sounded very panicked in its dread, but this one is kinda like "yeah. I hate it here and I feel dread. What's new?" ykwim? It was way less unnerving than the 1st one too, but idk if that's just bc I've gotten used to the effect or bc it's just not as much as an panicky song. There also seems to be a pattern of using ghosts as a way to express unease or anxiety which is really cool :) (7.5/10)

Serfs up: I think we know the drill already by now- loud bg music, muffled vocals (which isn't bad ofc), but for some reason I was more drawn to the bg music than usual- I really like the upbeat kinda fast tempo it has! The vocals were VERY muffled (more than the other songs I think), sm so that I couldn't really understand the lyrics (I don't mean this in a bad way I promise 😭) but I searched them up and I think that's the point. My bro is (in the storyline and not irl btw) high af (whether off drugs or off excitement from being w the love interest or both we'll never know~)- he's very much disoriented so the music shows that. It's a really cool concept that I haven't seen before and I really like it!! (8/10)

Skate witches: Ok this is new :0 It starts off with an audio clip of some sort- apparently it's from a movie from 1986 that goes by the same name- skate witches- (Yes I did research after listening to it lmao)- which I found very cool! Also different from the other songs is that the bg music is much calmer, not as much rock/punk vibes as the other songs. It was very relaxing. Again the vocals were muffled/soft- but it was SOOO much more relaxing than the other songs- no unease, anger, etc. I love love LOVEEE the vibes from this song. I also noticed that the electric guitar was also singing along with the singer (idk how to describe it, I'll ask my guitar geek brother later) and even echoed his words. Very cute imo :> It's kinda like a spin-off of "don't like me;" they have very simillar messages, the speaker/singer is obv quite upset, but while "don't like me" is very angry, "skate witches" seems to be more accepting ab it. Like "yeah. You don't like me and that makes me sad, but ur not worth it so I'll get over you soon w my own time." At least that's what I think ofc :) I totally see myself listening to this again!! :D (8.5/10- I am very much in love w calm vibes and have bias towards them if you couldn't tell lol) [After this I listened to the album on shuffle bc I was getting a bit bored and I wanted some ✨spice✨ (NOT IN A BAD WAY I PROMISE DFGHJKL)]

Lonely boy goes to a rave: This one also started with an audio clip ab school, and I must say, MOOD. My boy is speaking straight facts fghjkjhgfdfghj (my first day at my new school is tmrw pls pray 4 me). This one again had pretty loud bgm like the other ones, but it had VERY different vibes tbh. It wasn't like ANGRY angry like some of the other ones, more like dark and fed up. I acc quite liked it! It really fits the theme/story of the song- a sad lonely boy needing to do smth exciting, or to be surrounded by new ppl bc life just don't hit right (honestly same) but it seems like he can't reach the same level of excitement/happiness that he sees other ppl having. (again. same). I really liked it! Even tho it wasn't as short as some of the other songs, I felt like it was over too soon fghjkghjk (8/10- another vibe)

Doing all the things I used to do with people- part 2 (acoustic): This one also starts with an audio clip- I think it's of the singer himself but I'm not sure- but it's SOOO VIBEY!!! The wind/thunder REALLY elevated the coziness/vibes of this song too!! It's just so comforting in general omg. Again, a sweet song of a guy and his guitar, just singing his heart out and vibing w his friend. I LOVE it!! It's so relaxing yet kinda sad at the same time. The lyrics are really sad and depressing- it's very clearly ab a troubled person goin through some shit- but the little snippets of the singer randomly talking plus the wind/thunder just makes it so cozy and comforting I just want to hug this song tbh 😭💞 I AM IN LOVE (10/10- this is going in my comfort playlist now ty)

Swimming: This one was also quite chill too! This time the vocals were more echoey than muffled if ykwim? But I really liked that tbh! I feel like it really captured how it can feel while ur underwater, everything's all muffly and slightly blurry, but sometimes you just don't know if you like it or not. I didn't understand the lyrics again, but I think that's the point. Ur swimming underwater. Everything around you is blurry. You don't really know what's going on, and for some ppl that might be relaxing, but for others, it can be scary. I listened to this twice and the first time I thought it was a relaxing song, but after listening to it again, it sounds like the speaker/singer is drowning or overwhelmed. It's really interesting!! I really like this song! It's so vibey and majestic :) (8.5/10- I lowkey feel like I'm floating away fr)

I'm so fucking bored: This one had VERY similar vibes to "Swimming", but the lyrics are much more pronounced/clear and I can def understand them better than a lot of the other songs I listened to. But while the other song was quite quiet and kinda panicky, this one is a bit more confident I would say. It reminds me of a choir kinda, like ur walking into an abandoned/haunted church of some sorts and it's dark and lonely and scary, maybe there's a few ghosts- who knows, and you hear this. It's almost ominous, but more on the sad side too. Esp the lyrics- the story/song is def ab someone who's again, goin thru some shit, they've lost EVERYTHING, and maybe they're trying to be optimistic ("I'll bet heaven it's ok"), but they're mostly resigned since it's really only just 1 optimistic lyric and in the context of the rest it really isn't too good. They've given up and now see their horrible situation as smth like "oh well. can't do anything ab it can I" ykwim? Like the contrast between "I don't have a future anymore" and "I'm so fucking bored" kinda shows how normalized it is for ppl to go into ruin kinda?? Like they should be panicking, upset, angry, but they're just bored. Very deep lyrics fr. And then the piano too- CHILLS. Idk how to explain it, it's just wow. AND THE END THING. Idk if it's just drum sticks hitting smth or smth but it REALLY gave me the haunted church vibes. (9/10- it really hits different idk why)

I ran out of space and this is like really long, plus my mum keeps telling me to study for my placement test for school but YEAH! Media has an effect on reality, people’s actions, and the environment

Yeah yeah, we’ve heard the “media has an effect on reality” argument a thousand fucking times. End of the day, people are responsible for their own actions. Just as it’s not my fault for getting catcalled due to my dress, the author is not responsible for how readers interpret their writing. And the author is even less responsible for potential actions that readers may take in response to their writing. Wanting authors/artists to shoulder responsibility for people’s actions is so incredibly entitled.

(I swear to GOD if y’all bring up the Jaws stuff I’m going to lose it. Here’s a post about that. Read it. Maybe you’ll learn something.)

“What’s wrong with telling people not to enjoy media that’s Bad?”

So the other day, I had some guy tell me I need to put a warning on my darkfic telling people to not jerk off to it (no, I am not kidding). This would be an unacceptable course of action for a few reasons:

1) Gross Trying to control what strangers jerk off to is absolutely unacceptable, and reeks of the resurgence of purity culture. You absolutely cannot police the sexuality of other people. That is the basic tenant of purity culture, despite 

2) Ineffective Say I threw my morals on the ground and decided to demand what other people masturbate to. Why the fuck would they give a shit? If someone’s jerking off to something, some jackass on the internet saying “oh noooo, don’t do that :(” is absolutely not going to do anything. All that would happen is that I now feel a sense of moral superiority; it’s just ego-boosting, self-righteous bullshit.

3) Who cares? Some person I don’t know, jerking off, by themself, in the privacy of their own home, is literally not going to affect anything at all. Mind your business.

What’s wrong with de-platforming people/franchises that are Problematic?

Because y’all aren’t “de-platforming franchises”. Y’all are attacking and harassing small-time artists and authors because those are easier targets than fucking Disney or whatever.

Do I really need to go find the story of that one struggling artist who got death threats and doxxed and whatnot so fucking hard they were fired from their job??

Do I really need to go find the stories of the kids that wrote Problematic Fic and thus got suicide-baited and harassed so relentlessly they actually fucking killed themselves? And the people on your side who treated this as a victory?

For the record i dont consider ai generated images to be art theft in of themselves because of how machine learning works but i do think having your artwork used for machine learning should be voluntary in the same way you would volunteer any other kinds of data or information for any other tech sciences venture - which necessitates transparency around how the data will be used/applied

And because of that i also think its extremely dicey for ai imagery tools to be paywalled or for ai images to be pay-for-use

But the problems that arise are not new problems, they parallel a great many prior discussion in art around creative freedom, derivitive or transformative work, economic exploitation of artists and so on

As well as other conversations around art and the accessability of mediums - who is excluded when we attempt to define what is "true art" beyond our own personal taste

And a lot of arguments made make me uneasy both as an artist with an interest in the expanse of art history in particular modern art, and as someone in close proximity to other disabled artists who rely on the assistance of others to create - sometimes to a degree where their only involvement is directing someone else's hand

But also on a shallower level i find it ironic that some of these argumenents are coming from people whove previously applauded fanfiction and other transformative works, and defended their creation wrt intellectual property laws

And i find it ironic that given how often ive seen the term neo-dadaist thrown around that people argue against ai art on the basis that its "just collage" or "presenting a premade thing as your own" (which, while inaccurate to how ai imagery works and the involvement of the human hand in it, is also blatantly dismissive of the multiple art movements that made use of techniques such as collage and premade commercial objects)

But also i just keep coming back to, you can dislike an artwork and feel it offers nothing of interest without trying to define it outside of art

And that perhaps some ai works feel soulless or uninteresting not because of the medium but becausr of the intent behind the work (am reminded of a twitter thread decrying ai art using overly smoothened disney sfm looking big titty porn images as an example - which i find very comical given the amount of those types of drawings done by digital illustrators that are equally bland)

As an artist i do not feel threatened by technology, i feel threatened by capitalist applications of technology

But im a ceramicist so this is not new to me, the invention of processes to mass pour-cast identical ceramic cups to be sold for $3 at target has not crushed the creativity and variety of the medium out of existence, nor has it crushed peoples interest in my work (the low wages of those people however has crushed their ability to buy things that are not those cheap commercial offerings)

The solution here is never going to be a further expanding of capitalist intellectual property laws nor is it going to be the ascent of artists to a higher wrung in the socioeconomic hierachy

But also some of you are just very pessimistic, art is one of the earliest recorded human behaviours, it has a long history before capitalism and despite the difficulties i truly believe it will survive long beyond it too

This is a somewhat rambly post but i have a lot of feelings about art and i dont appreciate being used as leverage against people exploring different modes of creation to my own and i really dont like that some people are effectively arguing for a legal framework wherein someone could take me to court over exhibiting a vase shaped similarly to one of theirs and i would just have to bleed up my limited income to defend myself

Because defining art theft in traditional mediums is murky in a way that you cannot capture in a set of legal guidelines - and even if you could intellectual property laws will always be applied in a way that primarily benefits the corporate world because taking something like that to court costs money that myself and many other artists do not fucking have and because the construct of intellectual property exists to protect capital

The Beginner’s Guide to Making Mixed Media Art

Create value with what is left in your house with mixed media acrylic!

Here’s how I got started with mixed-media acrylic artwork: As January approached, I realized my supply budget would never survive the remainder of the year. For example, no matter how much white paint I order or the projects I work on, I always run out.

This realization, combined with a conversation I had with a nice lady who leads Art and Success’ trainings in mixed media painting technique using acrylic, shifted me away from pop art and into mixed media art.

What is mixed media art?

Mixed-media art is a visual type of art that incorporates a range of media into a single work of art. It is related to assemblage, a 3-dimensional sculptural art form in which found objects are assembled together in quirky and unique ways, and collage, which involves the rearrangement of pre-existing elements such as cut-up paper of various types and various other small items glued to the surface of the substrate being used.

If you are new to mixed media art, the best way to get started is to enroll in a mixed media painting techniques beginners’ course. However, in this article, I will attempt to provide you with some fundamental guidance toward becoming a mixed-media art artist.

Basic guide to mixed media artwork

Keep in mind that mixed-media art can include 3-dimensional objects as well as cut-up paper, but for the purposes of this article, I will concentrate on artwork that uses a variety of media, including acrylics, oils, crayons, and pencils. But remember, with mixed media art, everything goes!

Mixed media painting

Painting is one of the most intriguing types of art. Mixed media can be used to create a variety of stunning effects when painting. Even if you have little expertise with mixed-media techniques, you can do this. You can experiment with mixed-media painting with alcohol-based paints or salt. As a beginning in mixed media art, be open to learning skills from a variety of sources, including online research on novel mixed media painting techniques.

It is fundamental to keep an open mind in order to benefit from the unlimited mixed-media creative possibilities. Paint mixes, mixed media acrylic, mixed media canvas, chalkboard paint, spray paint, and fabric paint are some simple ideas to get you started.

Mixed media acrylic

If you are new to the field of mixed media art or are simply enthusiastic about the various varieties of acrylic paint available to assist you create mixed media magic, a quick course from a mixed media painting technique professional would be beneficial.

Acrylic paints, which are water-based paints made up of pigments suspended in an acrylic polymer solution, are ideal for layering. Try them out and learn while you’re on the go!

Mixed media painting techniques

One of the many advantages of mixed media painting is the overwhelming range of techniques available. Painting, drawing, layering, collage, texturizing, the peel-paint effect, mono printing, rubbing, slicing, weaving, frottage, and many more methods are used. My first zine pages 

Subhumans page

My starting idea for the page i'm going to show you, was to use an existing album cover and make it my own, a lot of the process for this one was simply me playing around with photoshop and procreate, and trying to make it look fun and bright, as well as being able to improve my skills on photoshop.

As at first I wasn't completely sure if I wanted to use this page in my actual zine I didn't photograph the process of the journey as well as I would of wanted to, if I knew how much I would love the final outcome. So the top photo is before pro create and the bottom photograph was in the second stage of making the collage. First I will explain the first steps I took on photoshop with actually laying out the images and figuring out how I wanted it to look. As I said before the basis of this idea was to use an album cover as the background, and one of my favourite punk bands were Subhumans, who I have already mentioned in my previous research as they were a very politically driven punk bands, and I always thought their cover of the album The Day the Country Died was really cool, and I really wanted to use this.

But I really wanted it to be bright so I decided to test out colour ways on the gradient map, where I decided to choose noise, which makes the colours al to more in your face and have an almost grainy effect on it. I then went to adding the photographs I wanted to use for it, with the bottom left one being one of my friends at a gig, after putting the photo in, and using the select and mask tool to get rid of the background I realised that she also had mohawk style hair just like the photo, so I decided to build the rest of the photos around this. The bottom photo I got from my friends art account called Cr0sspxtch, where she provided me with a folder of photos she had used at a gig, and seeing a photo of our friend Liam who has a mohawk I thought it would fir perfectly. However I didn't only want to use photos, I was interested in the idea of using a zine page, so I again looked through the Fanzines book by Teal Triggs which has so far being really helping me in this project for research and inspiration for my own work, here I found the perfect zine called '10 things Jesus wants you to know'.

Where the man had a mohawk, and the woman also had a spikey type hair cut, so I felt like this fit in really well. I was definitely happy with the progress so far but I still wanted to add something more. I wanted to link the fact that Subhumans were a very politically driven band so I thought a nice contrast would be to use a punk headline, and one of the most famous punk headlines of the 70's titled 'Punks with prospects', I thought this was a really nice bottom touch and as I knew I was going to add quite a bit on procreate I decided this would be a good time to move it to there.

This is the first time I had really started to experiment with procreate, I knew that I loved doing digital work but I also wanted to use my own handwriting and stick to the old zine style as well, and I knew that with procreate you can use many different types of pen and pencil styles using an apple pen which gives it a more physical feel than it does when using a font on photoshop. I'd already decided that I wanted to have fun with this piece, so I just started drawing whatever I could think of onto the page as this felt like the most authentic way to do it. From this I started to draw a black line around the mohawk in the album cover and add little bits of text like 'riots in the city' and 'subhumans', I did this by using a pencil type pen, I then coloured in the newspaper headline and the t-shirt in the bottom left corner, and as I did that in red I thought it would look cool to add some devil horns and tail, keeping the whole page quite sketchy. I loved the sketchy look of the whole page so far and while testing pens I drew a smiley face, and actually ended up really liking it so kept it in. One of the last things I did to that page was colour in the teeth green and yellow and from this I thought I gave the man quite a grim look, so I decided to extend this, as on the original album cover there is spit and also snot coming out of his mouth and nose, so I chose to extend this by drawing some of my own in green and while onto the photo below of Liam, I thought this looked quite humorous and on top of this is brought in the two elements of the cover and the photo well, so I decided to keep it. The one reason i was really like ring this page is because of how sketchy and authentic it felt to me.

This page was by far my favourite so far and I felt like the most evolved piece I had done showing my progress in using photoshop and also decided i certainly wanted to use pro create again, so I felt like it really set me off on the right track for the rest of my zine and gave me confidence to start making more pages. On the other hand I knew I didn't want to get too comfortable in my digital work and show what else I could do with my physical work.

Gig blood page

My baseline idea for this page came from a photo I took at a gig, that I has already shown in my digital sketchbook.

I thought it would be fun to name the page gig blood, as I took this photon at a gig when one of my friends got a busted lip from being in the mosh pit. Throughout the years punk gigs are notoriously known to be quite violent, Vim Renault writes about this for punkgirldiaries.com 'When the punk movement took off, the violence came on board. Bands like the West Ham supporting ‘Cockney Rejects’ took part in what has been described as ‘the most violent ever punk gig’...there were riots all the time at punk gigs.' A difference now however is that punk gigs aren't violent in the way of rioting and actual fights going on but in the most pits it's not uncommon to be hit or hurt, as the whole premise it to push each other around. On top of this there is a real sense of friendship inside the scene, most people know everyone there as the same crowd go to the gigs so no one hold anything personal if they get hit by one of their friends, and I really wanted to develop this idea into a page.

This is the work I did on photoshop for this page, I pre planned to do most of the work on photoshop for this so I wanted to keep it simple and just use photo shop as a way to display my images in the best quality I could. I added another photo I took of her in that night at the same gig and use the select and mask tool to get rid of background, and lay it on top of the other photo, and make sure I left an intentional gap so I could write gig blood at the top like a headline.

Here was my outcome, my first step was to fill in the white gap that I had left, for this I used to eyedropper tool on procreate to get the purple colour out of the photo itself and used a textured pen to start to fill in the gap, however I thought this looked quite flat and wanted to include more of the colours, so I used the eyedropper tool again to get the red out of the photos and the same pen to fill it in. I was happy with this, and it was really cohesive with the images, so I moved on to writing gig blood. Im usually not the best with handwriting but the one I used really helped me to write it quite quickly, I wanted the letters to be different sizes so as I wrote one letter too another I was changing he size as I went along, which I thought gave it a really interesting effect, it didn't really take me long at all to write it out and I was happy with the final outcome. To add more elements to the page used a pencil tool to draw round the photo of her and the top of the other photo in the same red and also black, which is only a small addition but I felt like it needed it just to bring kore colour into it with the black instead of moving just red and purple, this is why I also outlined gig blood with black pen as well.

This page possibly took me the fastest although it didn't feel rushed, I just had quite a developed idea of what I wanted it to look like before I did it so it wasn't too hard to actually translate that to the page. On top of this I also don't really have any negative feedback for this page as I think its quite simple, which isn't usually my style as I like to have really busy, in your face work, but it was nice to go more out of my comfort zone for this one to be happy with it without loads of elements onto it, and i really feel that this is because the images are quite interesting, and large on the page, and I wanted them to be the main focus.

I decided to put these two pages together as a double page spread, as they both have music links with the album and gig factors, and in addition to this I felt as though the colours worked quite well together. Lastly because the subhuman page is quite loud it could of been too much to put another loud page next to it, which gig blood is not.

Coastal walk experiments

In my last tutorial we spoke about how I should play around with a range of experiments. So here I have drawn the landscape of how I see it. With this one I walked and drew but also to make it look a bit nearer and have some structure I stood. I started off by drawing one view in one colour and then repeated in 2 different colours of different angles of my view point. So that I could create the overlay effect with the different colours. I didn’t use realistic colours of the landscape. As I wanted to try it with some more vibrant ones to change it up a bit. I would say this is one my favourite experiments. As I feel like it turned out well showing my different view points on my journey clearly. If I wanted to develop this experiment I would like to try and incorporate some watercolour / acrylic into it so that I could try and include some of the natural colours I see whilst drawing.

This experiment was seeing what it would look like with different time frames with different coloured pens. As you can see the green ink you don’t see much of due to setting myself only to have 30 seconds to draw. Then a bit more navy blue with a minute of drawing then the most colour used is the teal colour where I set myself 2 minutes to draw. I thought about this experiment to see what my eye would focus on whilst drawing in a short time frame what I would be drawn towards on my journey of walking. I would prefer it if it was a bit neater although it shows what I picked up on which I showed through the use of make making. It was a fun experiment to test myself on, would try it again to see what the outcome would look like.

Bit of a different experiment I then wrote down some thoughts what came to mind and what I saw on my walk. This was interesting to see how many things you actually pick up on whilst walking. What you notice see hear whilst out exploring. I mainly focused on writing down things I saw and heard as I didn’t really have many thoughts except focussing on the landscape and walking. This photo isn’t great as I used a pencil.

Bit of a different experiment to some more of playful and more creative ones I’m used to. But I find creating a wider range is better to see what I like the most and showing a variety of mark making examples showing my journey. The first example is a line drawing with a running out of ink pen which created an interesting looking mark. Where I focused on an area of cliff drawing the rock on the edge. Then I also drew this plant which was growing next to me. From the photos they look like pencil drawings due to the ink running out. But they did create a detailed simple drawing focussing on the shape within the plant and cliff. To improve these adding some watercolour to add a bit of life into them I would say would bring them to life a bit more and make them look a little less flat and enhance them.

After I thought of a way I could show walking and create a pattern / another type of mark making method. So I thought about how I could let my hand relax whilst it touching the paper and walking and move it slightly across the page. When waking bounces the pen creating these jagged lines of the movement of my walking. This examples look s but like jagged rocks / mountains. I would like to add some different colours on top to see what other sort of mark making I can create. With different thicknesses. These were created from walking down hill. So maybe walking up a hill or flat surface may create a different outcome maybe less jagged and maybe more smooth depending on the surface I walk on.

Lastly I wanted to focus on some parts of the landscape which stood out to me. Like the daisys and barbed wire. Which I drew in a collage way. Focusing on more of the details. I also drew some of the pathway as well to created some leading lines. I like this experiment. As adding in parts of the landscape you notice and admire but placing them wherever you like on paper. Which creates this overlapping collage style. I would like to complete this with some other colours and maybe some water colours as well to enhance some of the colours within the landscape.

Signup Tips for First-Time FTH Creators

Never offered an auction in FTH before and not quite sure what to put in all those text boxes? We've been doing this for a few years now and have seen what types of offerings are most effective, so here are a few pointers to help you get started:

For everyone:

It’s okay (and even encouraged!) to offer only one auction if you are new to creating for FTH. This auction is reliant on an honor system; bidders need to trust that creators will follow through on their promised fanworks. We do a lot of followup, but ultimately we can’t make the fanworks ourselves – we have to trust that you will follow through on your pledges. It’s tempting to offer as much as you possibly can, we know. But defaulting on your promised fanwork(s) can result in you being banned from participating as a creator in the future, and we want to see you and your wonderful work back again year after year! Trust us; start small, and see how it goes for your first round. 

Make sure to use those Portfolio Links! A lot of people who are new to the auction worry that they're not "popular enough" to get any bids. But many people browse FTH specifically to find new creators whose work they love! If you include links to your AO3, Tumblr, DeviantArt, etc, people who aren't familiar with your work can get an idea of your style and decide if they want to bid.

If you link to your Tumblr (or any website that uses a tag system), try to link to the relevant tag (many people use "my art" or similar) if possible. People are more likely to look through your work when they don’t have to do additional searching for it.

We only put the ~100 fandoms we expect to be most popular on the drop-down menu, but you aren’t limited to just those options! You can always write in any other fandom in the "Other" box. Yes, you can offer three write-in fandoms! If a write-in gets more than a couple of offerings, it may be added to the drop-down for the next year.

If your fandom has unique terminology, be sure to explain it! For example, in some fandoms "fancam" refers to a fan bringing a camera in to a concert and filming the performance from a different angle than official videos; in others, it refers to a video collage of footage of a particular performer from across performances or media they've been in.

More tips for each type of fanwork under the cut!

If you're offering a written fanwork:

Avoid the "Any fandom" option. People looking for fanfiction (or other written fanworks) tend to want someone who is familiar with their specific fandom and/or favorite characters/pairing. If you choose this option, your auction also won't get any specific fandom tags, and that is where people tend to look for fanfiction. Choose the 1-3 fandoms you're most interested or most comfortable writing in.

If your interest in a specific fandom is waning, it's not a good idea to offer it for FTH in the hopes that a good prompt will help you find that spark again. One of the most common reasons that creators default on their auctions is because they lose interest in the fandom, and you might get banned from future auctions if you can't fulfill your fanwork promise. If there's really only one fandom you feel like writing in right now, stick to that one! Don't feel pressured to offer multiple fandoms just because the option exists.

Put the pairings you're most interested in as well as your favorite tropes in the box asking if there's anything you're particularly interested in focusing on. Some people get very detailed here, which is great as long as you're careful to note which things are "this would be cool" and which are "I will ONLY write this." For example, "I prefer the book canon to the movie" is different from "I've never seen the movie and can/will only write book canon."

If you don't have much fanfiction posted, this box is extra important. This is your chance to let people know that even though you've only ever posted one Blorbo/Scrunglo fic, you've been reading a ton of Eeby/Deeby and would love to get your hands on them.

In the "NOT willing to address" box, be sure to put your hard nos. No matter what, you will not be held to any expectation from a bidder that you address anything you list here. This can be pairings, media adaptations, kinks, tropes, themes, whatever.

Be realistic about length. If it takes you six months to write a 5k fic, that's totally fine! But it’s probably a bad idea to offer 50k, given that you will need have it done by the December 31st deadline. No one will be upset if inspiration runs away with you and you end up writing far MORE than promised. But we (and your bidder) will expect you to hit whatever word count you choose as a minimum.

If you're offering fan labor:

Unlike fanfiction writers, you should seriously consider using the “Any Fandom” option! If you're just offering general beta services for a medium-to-large fandom, there will probably be plenty of interest just from that fandom. However, if you're offering up your specialized knowledge as a paramedic or culture-picking for a country that not many AUs are set in, consider whether you'd be willing to help with a fic from an unfamiliar fandom. Remember that you'd just be looking at the topic you're knowledgeable about, and wouldn't be expected to know characterization, etc. There might not be anyone in your fandom who happens to be looking for insight into the emergency room right now, but you might just make someone's day in a fandom you've never heard of!

Be realistic about what skills/experiences you can -pick for. We don’t require proof of how qualified you are to -pick for a certain topic; we trust you! But there is, for example, a difference between being familiar with a country’s culture because you consume a lot of content from that country, and being familiar with that country’s culture because you have lived there and experienced it yourself. Stick to subjects you have lots of real-world experience with.

There is a space to let bidders know exactly how much and what type of experience you have. You can put things like “bachelor’s degree in [subject]”, “native [language] speaker”, “[x] years of experience doing [hobby/job]”, or anything else you can think of that will help potential bidders understand how you can help them. 

If you're offering art, videos, or podfic:

The “Any Fandom” option is a bit of a toss-up here. It's useful for many people in these categories, who are willing to look at references, sort through clips, or read fanfiction for fandoms they've never heard of. And, like with fan labor, you might be making someone's day who's in a tiny fandom with no podfic, for example! Unlike written fanworks, a lot of people do look through the “Any Fandom” tags for these categories. However, be realistic about what you are willing to do. If you know your motivation is tied to the fandom, or you're really not confident in your ability to do work based on things you're not familiar with, don't feel obligated to put “Any Fandom”! It's just something to consider.

Be specific about what exactly you're offering. We give some options for artists like painting/drawing, moodboard, etc, but feel free to give more detail than that. The more the bidders know about what they can expect to get, the more confident they'll be about bidding.

If you're offering an “other” type fanwork:

Make sure it really belongs in “other.” Fanwork offers in the “other” tag don’t show up when people search any of the other tags. This category is really useful for truly unusual offerings that really don’t fit anywhere else, such as digital typesetting of a written fanwork, or a guest spot on someone’s podcast (both of which we’ve had, from time to time, in past years!) But if you think that your offering might catch the eye of a potential bidder who is browsing through the “written fanwork” or “fan art” tag, you are probably better off signing up in that category, and then using the “other” subtag.

where do you get your background textures? do you just google images of what you have in mind or is there a specific website you visit? I love the way they make ur art look & might want 2 try it for myself :3

SO most of the stuff i do for backgrounds is already accessible through any art programme! I'll run you though all the methods I use! ^^

With this its more of a papery simple texture to add! I use medibangs pre-set noise. This one is called "marker paper 2" and I usually use it on overlay on top of a colour I already like ^^. Generally anything grainy works but I like this one. I tend to expand it about x2 so you can see the grain of it in the final piece!

This type of grain is actually made with brushes instead of a noise filter! On medibang the brush being used here is called "stipple" and I usually use it on its absolute highest setting.

you might not realise you have a stipple pen in your own programme because usually it just looks like a weird little grainy brush but when its REALLY blown up it helps to add some texture.

Here's what the progress of that method looks like! Usually I'll do this on top of a smooth gradient, with one end I'll add some stipple grain in the lightest colour, and then vice versa with the darkest. By hand, I dot in some bits of light and then add a motion blur effect to the spots! If you use a Luminosity or an Add layer it makes them look like little stars.

For this watercoloury/cloudy look in the backgrounds I use actual images of clouds!

Here's all the transparent clouds I use! I dont remember where I got them all now but I probably just stole them from stock image sites.

I just collage them on top of each other! Then I'll use a "hard light" or "hue" layer to get the background colour that I like. I tend to add a semi transparent layer of colour on top of it to "smooth out" the texture a bit? so that the lights and darks arent so intense. In this example I also added some stars as well to put a bit of grain into it.

You can use some of these examples in conjunction with each other if youre trying to get a certain graininess out of the final piece! I would usually recommend adding a little bit of VERY light texture to your character as well so they dont look unnatural in front of the background! I hope this helps!

Kalim really is the type of character that’s needed at NRC! He’s distinctly different than most of the other boys in his demeanor and in his emotional vulnerability dbjsbshdbejeje and even though he’s sometimes looked down on for it, it never seems to get to him though that might just be because he’s kind of oblivious... Somehow Kalim manages to still smile despite all the assassination attempts and knowing that he isn’t as talented as his peers, even after the revelations of chapter 4 and 5...

His true strength lies in his ability to influence and to understand others with his positive attitude (though he seems to do this unintentionally; can you imagine how powerful he’d be if he knew how to manipulate better?????????). It’s really understated compared to flashy spells and more bombastic personalities, but as you’ve said, Kalim’s able to significantly soften blows from some pretty nasty people 😳 and that’s a rare skill that’s super hard to teach! It should definitely be praised more!!

This time the question is for a single idol... That's rough. There are a ton of idols who need to be written IMO. But I'm gonna say

Kim "YR" "Katie" Yerim... AKA Yeri (of Red Velvet)

So one of my favorite things to do is put a spotlight on lesser-known idols, but I've got a bone to pick with Kpop smut writers. And that bone is: Why the fuck is Yeri (effectively) ignored in the context of Red Velvet smut?

To preface: The rest of Red Velvet is smut-worthy. They're hot/cute/pretty. They're talented. Etc. But proportionally, Yeri gets very little attention. Even Wendy, Red Velvet's official visual hole (which is not my personal opinion, it is LSM's marketing strategy, hashtagWendyIsHotAwareness) appears in more than twice as many M-rated fics as Yeri on AFF according to a simple tag search. From personal experience looking for Yeri smut, for a majority of those fics she appears in, she is cameo character to justify using her name to pad out the fic's tags. You get this to a certain degree with Joy as well, but the difference is less stark, and Joy is less often relegated to background character status. If you ask me, this disparity is a tyrannical injustice and here's a list of reasons why you should join the very real crusade that I will eventually probably start for Yeri to get more smut written about her.

1. Yeri is hot as fuck.

I don't know if you've noticed, but Yeri is hot as fuck, and that's a pretty good reason for you to write smut about her. Are the other members of RV hot? Yes. BUT... is Yeri hot? Yes. And you know she is. She is not only hot, but she has little to no reservation about proving it.

Surprise, mother fucker. Yeri has an ass. It may not always seem like it because she's top heavy, but she definitely has an ass.

Don't try to pretend you weren't already thinking about her god-like tits. Without even being obscenely large, they are capable of changing the center of gravity. Of your eyes. To make you look at them. Because she has boobs. Does your bias have boobs? Don't answer that. I didn't THINK SO. Haha, gottem.

She's got the Squirtle lip, implying she is a water type, implying she is constantly wet and/or a squirter and/or lactates probably. She puts out house fires while wearing sick shades.

As someone with half a foot fetish and an expert opinion, I can also confirm she has the cutest feet in Red Velvet and is in at least the top 5 overall for idols as a whole.

Of course, given how blisteringly hot Yeri is, there are many more physical characteristics that I could cover here, but Tumblr has an image limit and I already spent too long making the collages above while my rapokki gets cold.

2. Yeri cusses.

I love when idols swear in English and this is my list so you can fuck off you gosh damn cunt.

3. We stan a horny queen.

We've all seen the clips. "Hi, I'm Katy. Nice to meet you." and "Yeah, I like girls... GENERATION." These were clearly what we call in the biz a panty drop and a gay panic, respectively. Yeri loves porn, sleeps naked, and has at minimum depending on how you count sixteen confirmed kinks (including a foot fetish, voyeurism, degradation/humiliation, something about vampires, and many more). She is a pansexual (meaning sexual toward anyone, though she may also have sexual feelings for kitchenware), gender fluid, ethnodiversity-appreciating switch. With all of the above in mind, she is obviously willing to fuck anyone in any way and if you write about it, she will surely find/read/enjoy it. Also she would have the longest, thickest futa dick in Red Velvet, a fact which is not up for debate.

4. She's not a massive bitch.

Don't @ me, Irene stans. It's a joke and I am exaggerating. Every celebrity of every caliber is under a lot of interpersonal/social stress guaranteed to manifest at random intervals as behavior ranging from mildly to severely antisocial.

But no really, Yeri is a pretty normal person. For as much as you can be if you're an extremely successful idol and influencer, Yeri's kinda normal. She still fangirls over stuff, she regularly shows gratitude, and she's not afraid to be seen as a regular human being, illusion of idol perfection be damned. She actually exhibits more emotional diversity than your average can of grapes, which cannot be said about a looot of idols. Maybe you should write emotional fluff about her too. You can't spell fIuffery without using all the letter's in Yeri's name. And honestly, why would you even try? (In case you missed it, that was a capital i, and was extremely clever)

5. Yeri is a meme idol, and she's funnier than you.

Yeri is an effortless comedian. Seriously, you should appreciate that more. She tries really hard to make you laugh, and you swine don't seem to appreciate them pearls.

If you write like I do, the fact that she's so fucking hilarious is extremely helpful and inspiring.

So yeah.

Also, if you want an idol to write who just doesn't have like nearly enough smuts in an overall sense, write Yooa. I know this was a rant about Yeri, but Yooa is also cool and hot.
