Card Set Hanakotoba

Recently I was discussing with my lovely friend @istoleyourboat about the meanings behind the flowers in this new card set, and I felt the urge to chronicle them somewhere! I thought you guys might get a kick out of it, too, so this seemed as good a place as any to put it.

So without further ado...

1. Hanako-kun - Queen of the Night

The Queen of the Night (月下美人) is a cactus flower that blooms just once a year for a single night. Because of this, the most heavily associated meanings with the flower are "transient beauty", "fleeting love," and "the urge to see someone just once."

The short-lived life of this flower feels quite fitting for our ghosty boy! I also like how the flower looks both beautiful and unsettling...all around a fantastic choice by AidaIro.

2. Nene Yashiro - Strawberry Blossoms

If you have paid attention to the Hanakotoba in TBHK before, then Nene being associated with strawberries should be nothing new to you. Regardless, the prevalent Hanakotoba for Strawberry Blossoms (イチゴ) are "love," "innocence," and "you make me happy."

The "you make me happy" one makes me want to kick my feet around and squeal a little. Isn't that cute!? I also feel the strawberry is especially fitting for Nene because it seems like something she would grow in her Gardening Club.

3. Kou - Clivia

Otherwise known by the names Bush Lily or Natal Lily, the Hanakotoba for Clivia (君子蘭) are "sincere," "noble" and "good-hearted."

I think this all fits very nicely with our resident good boy Kou, hm?

4. Teru - Bird of Paradise

The Bird of Paradise (ストレリチア) symbolizes "faithfulness," "magnificence," "a bright future" and "superficial love."

Even at a glance this flower really pops out at you, making it a great fit for the ever-impressive Teru. I really, really love this choice!!

5. Sakura - Hellebore

Otherwise known as the Christmas Rose, the Hellebore (クリスマスローズ) represents "reminiscence," "never forget me" and "notice my woes."

The way this beautiful flower seems to cast its head down makes it look almost sad. I suppose that's why it has such pitiful meanings associated with it!

6. Natsuhiko - King Protea

King Protea (キングプロテア), also known as the Sugarbush, symbolizes "strength," "courage," "resilience," and "a king's quality."

If you notice, Natsuhiko always has a little crown-shaped tuft hidden in his hair, so AidaIro associating Natsuhiko with a flower that references royalty pleases me. There's still a lot of mystery surrounding him, but we can at least confirm that Natsuhiko is, indeed, strong and resilient.

7. Akane - Ivy

The plain, non-flowering ivy stands out in stark contrast to the other plants here, but that's because the hanakotoba for it is just that good. Ivy (ヘデラ) means "everlasting love," "I take this feeling to the afterlife," "faithfulness", and "marriage."

Like, if that doesn't scream Akane, I don't know what does.

8. Aoi - Hydrangea

Again, if you've been paying attention to Hanakotoba in the series, this will not be the first time you've seen Aoi paired with hydrangea. Regardless, hydrangea (アジサイ) represents "enduring love," "mystique," and "fickleness."

The hydrangea is also associated with rejection, more specifically the coldness of a person who rejects the romantic advances of another. It's just such a perfect Aoi flower, there's no wonder AidaIro is so attached to it.

I thiiiink I've done something like this before so apologies if there are any repeats! But yes, domestic boys!!!

-- Cove is not a cleaner, not because he wants to be a messy guy, but he just doesn't think about it. Maybe just talk about a routine, a division of household responsibilities, that sort of thing and he'll be all over it.

-- Like I'm not saying to make a chore chart for him where he gets gold stars for doing his chores and after so many gold stars he can get treats like a pretzel down on the shopping street or a trip to the aquarium (that one is gonna be a lot of stars) but whatever works!

-- I def know I've said this multiple times, but Derek is Mr. Fix-It. If he doesn't know how to fix something (rare), he will figure it out and then he will know forever.

-- This is so serious, like if you end up buying a house and you mention that it might be nice to have like a sunroom or a playroom built onto the back of the house for kids or whatever, the guy is going to learn how to build a whole entire room. Putting up walls, putting down floors, other ... room stuff. It'll be a big project, obviously, but he'll get it done.

-- Imagine going outside and seeing him up on a ladder, banging a hammer against something all sweaty and concentrating hard. Or like imagine respectfully.

-- Derek is also a big time holiday guy. Tons of Christmas lights, the house is all decorated for Halloween and he's got on a costume and a wide variety of candy and treats to hand out to the kids. Your house is THE house to hit up on Halloween.

-- If you have kids and do an Easter egg hunt, Derek is going to be the king of this. Cove is gonna come over and hunt too and he's gonna be mad when he can't find them all.

-- Anyway.

-- Speaking of decorating for holidays, have you guys ever seen those little goose statues that people put outside and dress up for different occasions? Here, let me link it in case you think I'm crazy, this is a thing. You can get silly little outfits for every little holiday you can think of. You and Baxter saw one once and he joked about it, then you got one as a joke, then you got it outfits as a joke, and now no one knows if it's a joke anymore but you HAVE to make sure the goose has an appropriate outfit on.

-- Baxter also has some expensive candles. So expensive that you're kind of taken aback (they are all just wax, where does they money go), but the place DOES always smell really nice. He has seasonal ones he rotates, then some general favorites that work anytime.

-- If you try to light one of the pumpkin-y candles after December starts, he will treat you like you are actually insane.

-- Dance parties with Cove! We always talk about dancing with Baxter, but sometimes you and Cove just have a good time, putting on those songs that were popular when you were kids and being silly. This is really very cute.

-- Cove can't cook, but he goes through a phase where he tries real hard! Please be nice, but if you cannot safely eat something, then you don't have to (this is going to happen at least once or twice).

Cove: *gestures to chicken breast that is clearly pink in the middle* It's like when you go to a restaurant and order a steak rare!

You: No baby it really is not.

-- Derek is a grill guy. He has a "Kiss the Cook" apron and no one ever knows if he's wearing it ironically or not. Please kiss him anyway.

-- What if whenever you and Derek finally move in together, he goes through a stage where he doesn't really want to leave for long stretches of time because he's just so so happy to finally be living how he wants, to have told you how he felts after YEARS and to have you reciprocate those feelings? He would probably get too much energy, he's used to wearing himself out everyday, so he'd be running around the house like a puppy, just all excited.

-- That's not really anything, it's just cute, sue me if you want.

-- Living with Baxter is going to make you surprised that he survived for years on his own, that's how bad he is with mornings. Sleepy Baxter is a menace to himself and everything around him. What if you move into a house and he tells you he's going outside one morning to get the paper, and it's taking too long so you peek outside and he's just like standing out there in his pajamas, vaguely confused but also just not totally there. You're going to have to pull him back inside, it's not safe out there.

-- Derek and Baxter are both very clean, we already know that. They might like a chore chart too though, everybody likes treats!

-- Cove is going to be bringing home little presents regularly, you'll have like a little shelf just with trinkets he's found that made him think of you. Think little sea creature keychain from Step 1, like just so many little items that represent special things to you.

-- Derek is going to take care of you like you've never been taken care of in your life. Also wowee, the cuddles! Derek is a grade A cuddler, super warm and cozy.

-- It might take Baxter a little bit to get truly comfortable with living together, he's going to be scared you're going to leave or change your mind, like you'll realize that he's a mess (like you didn't already know and made it clear that you love him anyway) and be done with him. He'll get there though, please be patient!

-- And if he has to work late, please change the goose's clothes, he doesn't want the neighbors to see it in a pilgrim costume the day after Thanksgiving, how embarrassing.

and oh man!!!! what would katsuki smell like?? would it be weird to say i think abt this a lot aslkdfjh? i just love boys who smell naturally nice, and i definitely think he would be one of them. personally, and maybe i'm being a little biased but! i feel like he's not the type to wear cologne very often?? maybe during special events or gatherings? but in general i think he smells like fresh laundry, maybe subtly like his body wash if you get close enough — i think he'd lean towards autumny scents in that regard? apples and cinnamon, or a burning wood??

The fact you remember where I'm from and that is spring here is quite cute ^^ I've been seeing so much about fall on social media, but my vibes are different right now, I'm on flower and pretty colors vibes 🌸💐 I hope you reunite with your Sweet Bill soon, you sound so lovely together!!

And about the video, I wish it was me and Seonghwa 🥺 it would be adorable! This Wednesday is national holiday in Brazil, so, as I don't have work or uni, I'm thinking on finally watching Star Wars. What do you think? If you know a lot about the franchise, could you point me to the right direction, please? :D

Ooh, Star Wars advice. That is going to vary from fan to fan. More often than anything useful you are going to get a ramble from the person about what works for them and the place the movies found them in their life. But hey, it is my page so I can ramble. It is a deep world with lots of television shows and books too, but my knowledge is limited to the movies, and I haven't even seen all of them yet. I like the well known characters R2-D2 and C-3PO from my childhood and the more recent BB-8.

The short answer is if you just want to try one to see if you might like more the original 1977 movie that started the franchise. It is a fun adventure called Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. Alternately, the 2015 Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens is another good one if you want a more modern looking movie.

PC Magazine has a nice roundup of the movies and several suggested orders to see them. It is also fine to just watch one and decide trying once was enough Star Wars in your life. Alternately, the recent streaming shows like The Mandalorian might be more interesting than the movies so there are many ways to sample Star Wars. That's on my viewing list one day since I love the character people were calling Baby Yoda until he got a name in the story.

Two other things that may be of interest upfront, you might enjoy the adult reader insert stories of Tenelkadjowrites about Star Wars. (She is really the one to ask about Star Wars, even her username is from the wider Star Wars world!) I already liked her Seonghwa writing so seeing more work in a different fandom was fun too.

Also, my love of K-pop costuming has me smiling when I see somebody dressed in clothes that could pass for something from Star Wars. Yoongi from BTS had a photo shoot where he could have stepped off the set of the 1977 movie and Seonghwa of course keeps making me think Star Wars with his flowing outfits and swords.

On to the more personal answer with pictures (including my underwear!) and a video of the worst entry in the franchise but one of my favorites anyway!

A little too young for the first movie, I did have some of the action figures growing up and loved playing Star Wars with my friends. I was the right age to appreciate one of the most hated elements of Star Wars- the sort-of-cute teddy bearish Ewoks from the 1983 movie Return of the Jedi. I even bought Ewok Underoos recently but can only show the package I saved because I did not follow the no-heat in the dryer instructions and the iron-on design peeled right off my shirt.

I love BB-8 the most and have a lot of stuff with that character including a pillow, backpack, and plate.

So, I like the cute stuff and my love of Star Wars is shown in stuffed animals too. Here are Max Rebo, C-3PO, R2-D2, and a jawa hanging out at the end of the hallway at my house.

And I like the designs of the storm trooper costumes too so have one of those toys in my room along with a second BB-8 backpack and a matching luggage out of shot.

And last, the worst entry in the Star Wars World- the children’s Ewok movie The Battle For Endor. I was eleven when it came out and liked it. Now I can look at the trailer below and see the fern filled redwood forests I am familiar with now that I live in the San Francisco bay area. Bill says we even have some of those fern types in the backyard but he is insistent it is not because he likes Ewoks.

So my final answer is there are many ways to enjoy Star Wars including just the toys or taking one look and realizing it might not be your thing and all are perfectly reasonable ways to feel about the franchise. If you like it, there is always more to see, but it is okay if it is just a movie to you. For me it is mostly the show where some favorite characters came from.

Sunflower: What is something you don’t want to imagine life without?

A: well a lot of things (like family and friends ofc,) but if i were to think deeper I just know i couldn't stand a life without music I think i'd literally go insane-

Primrose: Describe your ideal life.

A: omg hard but interesting q! well, financially stable so I don't have to worry, happily married with no kids living abroad somewhere (i'm not sure where just away from here hhh,) and being able to travel to all the countries I want to visit! nothing too flashy, just a normal, quiet life where I can tick off everything on my bucket list peacefully and live happily :)) (I think that answers it?? idk shdkjsh)

Lavender: What’s your favorite thing about yourself?

A: ahh hmm, maybe my creativity? i think i've dabbled in almost every art at this point and i think i have decent creative ability at least so i'm happy i can express myself that way :'))

A: best ever? i can't think of one specifically, i like it when people call me a 'hard-worker' because i like it when my efforts are recognised, but if i were to be plain maybe just 'pretty' lmao? Heliotropium: What helps you calm down when you feel stressed?

A: omg i'm a super anxious and stressed person 24/7 i'm never not worrying and stressing about something so if anyone has the answer i'd like to know !! SHAJHS um well probably hot drinks and binge watching BTS in the soop series cause that's super calming - or honestly maybe dancing/music like i think dancing out my stress really helps (well it helps when i'm angry at least shjkhds).

Freesia: What are three good things that have happened in the past month?

A: ah thanks for this it's nice to focus on good things 🥺 umm I got a grade I was surprised and really happy about, I went out properly for the first time in a long time since covid really began (going out into London of all places after hardly being outside for months and months was really something o_O but a fun experience !!) and I guess hitting my 365 day streak on duo as a final thing?? lolol

A: MICA.... 🍼 I am once again not very good at picking favorites. (It’s different when there’s four options vs countless ones, so..) Every summer until a few years ago my family used to travel to Canada to what we called “the cottage” with my cousins’ families, and it was super fun! whenever I see sunbeams i have a distinct memory of lying in the grass with my cousin looking at the sky. we stopped being able to go there but I hope we can find another place sometime..

5.) Is there a food you’ve never had but always wanted to try?

Yes! There are so many. I feel like I've only scraped the surface with a lot of Asian cuisines, so that's something I'd like to explore more. Another friend also mentioned Flammekueche before, which sounds like absolute heaven 🤤🤤 I'll try pretty much anything at least once~

8.) Rain storms or a light drizzle?

I like both, any sort of rainy weather is nice but rainstorms are my favorite sort of weather--especially with thunder and lightning (as long as I'm not trying to drive in it). But I love being warm and cozy inside and listening to the rain, one of the things I always look forward to come spring. And it makes everything smell so good outside, too.

12.) Bright colorful living room or neutral cozy living room?

I'd go for neutral cozy with bright pops of color from things like art work, blankets and throw pillows. That way you still get the color in there somewhere but it's not too overwhelming/easier to redecorate if you want. I tend to lean towards neutral colors and comfortable textures, soft wools, sheepskins and oversized throw pillows. My dream room would be something with huge couches and warm throws, maybe with a big fireplace or a wood stove--something not out of place in a cabin.

16.) What’s a language you’d like to speak?

I really need to get better at my Spanish 😅 I still need two semesters of it to graduate, and while not god-awful, I still have so much room for improvement, and my grammar is less than stellar. If I could pick one language to learn perfectly in an instant, it would be that one.

24.) All plants are great but do you have a favorite?

I adore irises and tuilips--really any of the bulb flowers are gorgeous, but I've been more fond of violets lately too. I have a couple pots of them, and they've brightened up my space so much, with the rich colors. I love hostas too, we had a ton in my garden growing up and they'd get huge and seemed to enjoy the climate so much. There are so many pretty varieties, and remind me of summer days. Moss is one of my other favorite plants, and would still love to have a garden of it someday.

28.) Do you still watch shows you watched when you were a kid? even from time to time?

Occasionally, yes! Especially if I've had a really bad day and need something a little mindless. Sometimes I'll watch Ghibli or Pixar films, but occasionally I'll put on an episode of the original Pokemon series. It was my favorite when I was younger, and it's a little silly, but it definitely improves any sour moods.
