Fic: everywhere but here (1/?)

first MCU fic! i’ve been wrestling with this over a month so that i can post the whole thing in one go, but honestly the story’s getting too long, i’m really unsure if i’ve nailed the character voices, and my life is so full right now. so i’ve split this into parts.

this is dedicated to the wonderful @franklyineedcoffee with whom i’ve done much nerding out over the last couple of months; and also to fellow spiderman enthusiasts, @queen-of-carven-stone, @hacash and @sunflowerchester <3

Summary: SPOILERS for Avengers: Infinity War. After the final battle on Titan, a combination of Soul Stone shenanigans and his own spider powers means that Peter is pinballing between realities, forming and reforming until he’s sure it’s going to drive him nuts. He’s desperate to get back home, but he needs to figure out what ‘home’ is first.

One

"Hey, Mr. Stark."

"Yeah."

"Remember when, um, when you and the other A-Avengers faced down the first Chitauri invasion? Like, way back when? In New York?"

"Kid, you're talking about it like you read it in a history textbook."

"It is in my history textbook, actually. Except I was also kind of there to see it all happen--well, a bit of it, anyway--and that's never stopped being awesome, but, okay. That's not my point. Do you remember what happened after?"

"Shawarma. Parties. Lots and lots of governmental red tape. Parties. The worst year of my life. Did I mention parties?"

"I--uh, we always figured that you guys, you know, lived in the Tower together for a while. I mean, you know. Training together, eating together, just--being a team."

"Like a regular domestic, you mean? Rogers manning the grill, Bruce landscaping the garden, Nat telling us we're all idiots while doing backflips?"

"Um... maybe?"

"Nah, kid. We went our separate ways until the next big world-threatening thing came around. Adult friendships, see, don't quite work the way you think they do--"

"Adult frien--Mr. Stark, I'm sixteen, not five."

"Could've fooled me."

"I guess I'd kinda hoped--anyway. Never mind, Mr. Stark. It's stupid."

"At any rate, I screwed the pooch on the whole Sokovia Accords thing, so don't hold out too much hope for a big Avengers family reunion any time soon. Or for whatever else you were fantasising. Or reading from the tabloids--"

"Yeah, okay, Mr. Stark."

"--all of which, by the way, think Rogers and I have some sort of secret super-powered lovechild, and that's how the whole issue blew up--"

"We can stop talking about it."

"--which is absolutely ridiculous; Rogers is kind of my godfather which would make the whole thing vaguely incestuous, which, hey, I'm all for whatever floats your boat usually, but that's taking things just a smidge too far--"

"FRIDAY, stop!"

"... apologies, Mr. Parker. Shall I cease the Tony Stark simulacrum altogether?"

"N--yeah, FRIDAY. Yeah, thanks. I guess I thought if I heard a familiar voice I could--um. Yeah. You can shut it down."

"May I help you in any other way, Mr. Parker?"

"No. I was just leaving."

"Catastrophic damage has rendered much of the roadways outside of this building unusable. May I suggest seeking an alternative mode of transport?"

"I'll figure something out."

It starts off as a weird thrumming sensation at the back of his neck which blows up abruptly into the worst anxiety that Peter's ever felt--his hands shaking, gut cramping, sweating almost right through his suit. His first instinct is to run--usually when he feels like this, there's something to run away from. Now, though, the shrieking sense of wrongwrongWRONG is coming from everywhere; he's being crushed by it, buried under a mountain of sensation that drowns out thought.

Peter takes a deep breath of Titan's hyper-oxygenated air. He sways, tries to catch Mr. Stark's attention, but he can barely get the words out. Besides: Mr. Stark's a bit pre-occupied at the moment, arguing with Doctor Strange--their words weave in and out of Peter's hearing, stones and destruction and this is the end of us all, over and over again--and every now and then he stops to catch his breath, hand pinned over that horrific wound in his stomach, knuckles whitening, and Peter--

and Peter--

He can't breathe, he can't, he can't. Everything around him is an orange haze when he says Mr Stark? I don't feel so good and stumbles forward; the weak sun filtering through the dust is now blinding and he can barely make out Tony turning to him. I don't know what's happening, he says, and it's starting to hurt, a bone-deep ache like that time he got really bad food poisoning from spoiled shrimp when he was ten or, or, the time of the spider-bite--

Numbness is starting to chase the pain, spreading up from his feet and fingertips. He begins to fall, and Mr. Stark catches him--but not before he sees the tips of his fingers just... flaking away, floating  into the haze. Realisation hits him then: they’ve lost. He’s disappearing, and Mr. Stark isn’t, and Peter’s used to losing, but never quite like this, not this much. Absurdly, all he can think of right now is his promise to Aunt May that he’d help her with her new brownie recipe later that evening, finish making the last of the flash cards for decathlon practice for MJ, drop by Ned’s--ostensibly to study but really to start hammering out ideas for cosplay in time for the premiere of Solo--then maybe sneak in a neighbourhood patrol before bed, cutting through the chill air and feeling on top of the world because this is something, finally he’s doing something--

I don’t want to go, please, sir, I don’t want to go, he says, and he can’t feel his hands anymore but he tries to hold on anyway, scrabbling at Mr. Stark’s back even as he’s terrified that it’s going to fall apart in his arms too. He can’t hear what Mr. Stark’s saying over the roaring in his ears; he hopes it’s ssh, kid, I’m about to fix this like he’s heard a million times before but the words that rumble in his chest instead are if you die--

if you die, i feel like that’s on me.

The numbness is in his chest now, swamping his lungs with cold (like lake water, except Iron Man’s not here to save him this time--) Peter’s utterly out of breath (out of life) and falls, and Mr. Stark falls with him--through the haze Peter catches tears in Mr. Stark’s eyes and it is such a bizarre sight that he almost laughs. He wonders fleetingly about Uncle Ben, lying on the pavement gurgling blood and the weeks and weeks of black devastation that followed, and a part of him still untouched by the cold and fear and panic aches for the people who will live in the wreckage of… all of this (of his death).

I’m sorry, he tells Mr. Stark.

And then there’s nothing.

So. This is embarrassing.

Don’t get Peter wrong: waking up in his own bed, whole and well and alive, right after fading away into nothingness in Mr. Stark’s arms? Is not the worst thing. He’s even willing to go along with the it-was-all-a-dream cliche if it means that Mr. Stark didn’t get stabbed on a dead planet in outer space and some big purple alien didn’t kill half the universe. He seems… fairly intact (Peter checked) and his bedsheets smell pleasantly of the cheap fabric conditioner that May is attached to and Peter is so so relieved that he feels like his heart is going to burst with the force of it.

Then--

“Kiddo, I hope you’re awake, because I don’t think they’re going to excuse you showing up half an hour late anymore.”

Peter freezes. Now wait a damn second--

Uncle Ben peeks into his room. “Oh, good! Spider-Man’s still alive and kicking! Breakfast’s on the counter when you’re ready.” He winks and leaves.

“Um,” Peter says intelligently, his heart pounding wildly in his chest.

He should be freaking out. He should be--is this a dream? Is Uncle Ben an alien? A shapeshifter? Was Mr. Thor suddenly going to walk in to see Peter gaping at the door like a landed fish? Why was he even using that expression when he’s never gone fishing in his life?

“UM,” Peter says again, louder.

Like Peter said: So. Frickin’. Embarrassing.

My 10 Most Wanted Smash Ultimate Characters

Like a lot of people, I am very excited for the new Smash game and I reverted to a child when E3 came around and we finally got Ridley. I'm relatively new to the whole fighting game thing (I only bought a copy of Smash 4 last year as my first Smash game so kill me I guess) and that's probably going to show in this obligatory want list but here are my ten picks for if I could haphazardly choose who's getting to punch Mario this time around. By the way, this list is in priority order so my number 1 pick is who I want the most!

P.S I know we're only getting a few more characters if any so obviously not all ten are going to make it in. In fact, chances are none of them will. But I can dream, okay?

10. Captain Toad

I mean, look at this little guy! You can't tell me you don't want to play as him (I only just got a switch and the upcoming Captain Toad game is admittedly where my excitement is right now). While I guess I agree that the Mario series is a bit over-presented in Smash Bros, the fact that a version of Toad is finally getting his own game seems like high time that Toad became more than Peach's punching bag. His moveset would be probably be simple enough, considering how central he is during his game on the Wii U, so I guess they could just import a similar moveset over to Smash. Honestly, I know very little about Captain Toad, apart from the fact that he’s cute and likely to be in it. A Toadette palette swap/echo fighter definitely wouldn’t go amiss either.

9. Spyro

This one seems a bit less likely, but I’m aware that Nintendo and Activision are on good terms (see my number 5 pick) and it’s possible we might see the new Spyro remaster make its way onto the Switch in future, which definitely increases his chances. I don’t have a hell of an attachment to Spyro as I only played one game (very briefly), but he’s on this list generally because he looks cool and I feel like he’s an iconic third party staple that is born to be a smash addition. Again, his moveset could be ripped right from his games, his final smash could be something fire related because, you know, he’s a dragon. Before we continue, I’m fully aware that the vast majority of this list is third party and it’s definitely not realistic that we’ll get any of these characters at all. But hey, the further you get down on this list, the more you’ll understand that realism isn’t really what I was going for on this list.

8. Sora (Kingdom Hearts)

Again, fully aware that KH3 hasn’t been confirmed for Switch. But Kingdom Hearts II was a pretty big part of my childhood back in the PS2 days, so I feel like Sora’s spot on the list is more a favour to my inner child. Plus, Kingdom Hearts is a product of the same team as Final Fantasy and Cloud got in, so hey anything can happen! What makes Sora especially unlikely in my mind is that he’d basically function like any of the Fire Emblem characters (which we really do not need any more of), except with a key. Still though, cool laser final smash with the keyblade? With Donald and Goofy? Okay maybe not that, I imagine that’d be a nightmare to sort out in terms of rights.

7. Lara Croft (Tomb Raider)

If Snake deserves to be slotted back in, I feel like Lara Croft fits perfectly in the roster at this point. The inclusion of Lara would be a huge selling point for the game considering how iconic she is and, much like most of my other picks, probably wouldn’t have a particularly complicated moveset. Maybe a mixture between the bow she has pictured above and short range knife could make her an extremely balanced character, akin to Link. This would be a very exciting third party reveal if it happened.

6. Black Mage (Final Fantasy)

Here’s my wildcard pick. Arguably the most unlikely in my list bar one (you’ll see), this one made it into my top 10 because of the fact that this little guy has also made its way into several games I played in my childhood; the Chocobo Tales game I had for the DS as well as (again) Kingdom Hearts II. I’m not at all familiar with the Final Fantasy franchise, in fact I’ve only really heard of Cloud and Sephiroth (who was very nearly considered for this list) because of their appearances in Kingdom Hearts. And another thing, I have very little idea what his moveset would be but I figured no one was really talking about this little dude and if none of my wanted characters are likely to make it in, might as well make ‘em weird.

5. Crash Bandicoot

Here we go. The one that almost everyone wants. The Crash N Sane Trilogy is coming to Switch and, as I mentioned, Activision are pretty pally with Nintendo right now so this is looking more likely than ever. Admittedly, the only Crash game I ever played was Crash of the Titans on the PS2, which I loved to bits at the time. So while my experience with Crash was likely not the same as everyone else’s, he’s another character with a moveset already implemented and I’d say he’s probably the most likely out of the third party big bois.

4. Shovel Knight

He’s an indie sensation on multiple platforms. He’s a unique and interesting character with a great moveset potential. He even has his own frickin amiibo, this guy was born for a smash inclusion. With Bomberman’s absence, I think that Smash Ultimate is missing a genuinely popular new indie contender. I think that Shovel Knight more than covers this ground, and I reckon Sakurai knows it too. If anyone on this list is getting added, it’ll probably be Shovel Knight and that’s very exciting.

3. Waluigi

Okay, okay, I know. Let the memes die, right? But just hear me out on this one. I’m a Waluigi stan, I won’t lie to you, I’m not proud of it but I love this weird purple egg and that’s just the way the world works. I’ve heard a theory, one that you’ve likely heard too, that suggests (loosely) that Waluigi is still in with a chance of a Smash addition:

They spent a whole lot of time during that E3 presentation specifically highlighting the fact that Waluigi is an assist trophy, even using him as an example for the fact that trophies can be K.O’d now to really drive home the fact that you ain’t getting your purple meme content this time around

During the whole of E3, including all the Treehouse gameplay and the Invitational, there has been no sighting of Waluigi in the game. Obviously, could just be because it’s a demo and we know not everything has been added yet. But still, them leaving out the most heavily focused assist trophy? Seems fishy to me (BTW, I got this info from Alpharad the youtuber, so check out his channel for a better explained version of this)

Daisy was announced. DAISY was announced. I’m not saying Daisy is a bad addition, but there is a lot less hype around her. The fact that Waluigi was explicitly deconfirmed and Daisy ended up as one of only two new E3 character announcements? Doesn’t add up. Could literally just be because it was really easy to include her as an echo fighter compared to giving Waluigi a whole new character, but you know. I love me a conspiracy theory.

So there you have it. I’m holding out a tiny bit of hope that all of this is setting up the biggest gaming bamboozle in history. But come on, they’re bringing everyone back, either way we’ve got to be happy. (Sidenote: I’ve heard people are harassing Sakurai over Twitter because of this. That’s horrible and immature. Pls stop thanks)

2. Sans

Yeah, I know. Told you realism was going out the window. I have decided to dutifully ignore how massively toxic the Undertale fandom is and hope that Sakurai sees the potential of including a character from this still amazing game. An Undertale switch port is rumoured and I’m pretty damn sure Toby Fox would be onboard for Undertale appearing in Smash, but I know this is basically impossible. What would his moveset be? How would he be animated? It’s cool, Sans is punching Yoshi and Bayonetta in my dreams.

1. Rayman

Considering how iconic this guy is and how close Ubisoft and Nintendo are now (Mario x Rabbids anyone?), it looks as if it’s time for Rayman. On top of that, Rayman had a trophy presence in Smash 4, so we know Sakurai has considered him. His moveset makes itself so he would be a brilliant third party add and, considering that Rayman Legends is one of my all time favourite games, there’s no contest here as to who’s top of my list.

Well, there you have it. Feel free to crap all over me anonymously about my lack of knowledge/differing opinions. Or, if you like, send me your wants/predictions for character adds and we can have a cool lil discussion about it because we now have six months to wait so we have to fill the time with something.

SNK has always been a wild ride, but I don't believe I've ever been this excited and frustrated that I don't have the next chapter in my hands RIGHT NOW- if only to satisfy the itch of knowing which half-hidden face is who from Paradis. And also to figure out what they've done to Porco, Pieck and Zeke to neutralize them while Eren gives Reiner the most uncomfortable tableside chat.

My heart was pounding throughout the entire chapter. The last time that happened was chapter 84 and I gotta say, I finally feel like this whole Marley arc has been worth it. What an adrenaline rush it's become! Now that's now Attack On Titan is supposed to be. I can't wait to see everybody else again and proceed to reach the climax of the story.

The hype for SNK 100 is too real. Everything will explode

I need Ch100 right now immediately. Waiting another month is going to be torture. In the meantime I hope Porco and Pieck enjoy their time in the pit. If it turns out that Helos is Levi I will eat my own platform boots

We thought so too and had a hard time limiting ourselves to just these six. The look of horror on page 20 was Reiner’s expression as Eren told him, “I’m the same as you. This wasn't an option for the question about what the soldier was whispering to Mads, but I thought it had to do with that panel where the guy on the rooftop said to "report it" no matter how small it is. The Marley soldier was relaying that report, whatever it is.

The lack of concern over the disappearance of all the Warriors from the audience is alarming...unless it's part of their plan, which removing the fighters from the crowd sounds like something inline with what Paradis would be attempting if they're about to hijack the play.

I think Willy is working with Armin, whereas, Eren is working with Zeke. Isayama did say they were going to split.

I think Zeke is helping Eren for the time being but I also think it is only a temporary alliance. He will double-cross Paradis like he did the Restorationists and Marley before the end, and he will be a sizable end-game threat to both Paradis and Marley.

Zeke does seem to comply with too much questionable activity to not be working secretly with someone. He doesn't question being separated from Pieck and Porco, he's the only one not facing the guard that summons them, he let - encouraged- Reiner to go with Falco right as the ceremony started, and the baseball mitt Eren had likely had something to do with him. The Zekeret is still a wild card though so it makes all this hard to pinpoint.

When I first read the chapter and found similiarities between Connie and the trap-kun soldier I was like "what the fuck?!" And than I thought Connie being that soldier would be absolutely LIT.

I don't think any of the background characters are people we know. We saw how Isayama does that with Amputee-Kun, he appeared several chapters before the official reveal and there was no doubt once it was done. Trapdoor-kun, Helos Cosplayer, anyone else? Nope. as expected of pieck, she figured out the soldier was an impostor

Personally I really hate how people are making these predictions and analyzing details like chin shape in attempt to recognize him. We simply do not see enough of his face to tell who it is so it's pointless that people are arguing about it so vehemently. It could be Connie. I could be Levi. It most definitely isn't Armin. It could be a whole lot of people but right now at least half of the people will be wrong about it so arguing is going to get us nowhere. End of rant.

Pieck was actually exactly right! I always loved her design and oppressed but trying her best herb merchant aesthetic. So cool that she saved the lives of Reiner and Zeke, her influence on character relationships and the plot.

In RtS I wanted Reiner dead. Half to end his suffering, half to be vindicated for the things he'd done, but I guess it was Berty Beetle's turn.

Regarding Eren he ackwonledged that Reiner and co. were just clueless kids trying to save the world when they destroyed the Wall. And he is stating that he as well has been forced in this role. To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Attack on Titan. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Eren's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Attack on Titan truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Zeke's existential catchphrase "As expected of Pieck 👉😶👉," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Hajime Isayama's genius unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools... how I pity them. 😂 And yes by the way, I DO have a Reiner and Historia tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.
