#i'm listening to defunctland and the history of it

i'm really surprised there isnt a single defunctland video on even just one knott's berry farm attraction. i feel the history of knotts is so tied in closely with the history if disneyland, and he's also done videos on other non-disney attractions, it just feels natural to me that he would have done a video at some point. does anyone know if theres an episode in the podcast? (i havent listened to it yet)
that being said i think it would be amazing to see him do a video on the windseeker - knott's windseeker specifically, not any of the ones at the other cedar fair parks. this one windseeker was shut down after less than two years of opening, after passengers got stuck on the ride for four hours and, in a separate incident, a wheel fell off.
(im not interested in video essays or docuseries by others tbqh, i quite prefer kevin perjurer's style of documentary and he has a rly soothing voice)

I think my thoughts on tma2 can best be summed up like this:
I trust Jonny more than I trust RQ
And I don't mean that in a parasocial way, I mean it in a "I've read and supported Jonny's other works and have enjoyed his storytelling repeatedly" way. I trust that he can and will deliver a good and satisfying story because I've liked all of the other stuff he's put out. If he wasn't involved with the project, I probably wouldn't listen but because I know he's taking part and that I like his storytelling, I'm actually excited for tma2

Absolutely normal friends on a normal show
[Image Description: a picture of Ryan Bergara, Brian David Gilbert, and the Professor on the set of Puppet History. The Professor is a fuzzy blue puppet with glasses and a tan hat and coat. The text above the photo says "just three normal pals doing a normal show that doesn't have anything dark and mysterious in it" /end ID]

Rewatching the conjuring house episode of buzzfeed unsolved and I *fully* forgot that these two idiots (affectionate) pretended to be cats to try and find a ghost dog

Idk why but this part of the Garfield themed tunnel of love ride Defunctland absolutely slayed me

39?
39. youtuber you’ve been obsessed with and why?
Ok so!! I don't watch that many Youtubers but there are a few I like to have on or listen to when I'm drawing, and sometimes their videos are so good I have to give them my full focus too. Here are some recommendations:
Nitro Rad - Top-tier gaming youtuber. He's introduced me to a lot of obscure 3D platformers, indie games, and horror games (this last category I would never play on my own because I get scared too easily lol). I really admire his approach to analyzing games, wanting to see the positives in them, and trying to see where the devs were coming from even with ideas that don't work out in the end, rather than being exaggeratedly negative or dismissive for "entertainment". When he can't enjoy something at all, you know it must be really horrible, lol (see: Frogger- the Great Quest). He's really an inspiration for my own approach to how I interact with and describe games.
Defunctland - I know a lot of people know about Defunctland but I just have to echo the sentiment that Kevin manages to make everything interesting. So many times I've started the most recent video thinking "I can't possibly care about a Wiggles ride" or whatever, but I managed to be invested and eager to hear about the attraction's fate by the end. He turned an investigation into the four-note Disney Channel theme into a full length documentary that literally made me cry. I'm not a theme park expert but I do love them and find them fascinating and I've learned a lot about theme parks and related topics from these videos.
Matt McMuscles - the What Happened series is always fun and has taught me about the dev histories for a lot of notorious games (and even some good ones!) and how rough and messy the game industry is behind the scenes. Like Nitro Rad, he tries to give credit where it's due; he investigates when "bad" games are the result of crunch, low budget and bad management to help banish myths about devs being simply inept or lazy. But I also really love his "The Worst Fighting Game" series! I don't know much about fighting games myself but it's just cool to see someone analyze something they're so passionate about!
Designing For - ok I'm biased because one of the writers and the person who does the voice-over is my friend, and I've done some art for the channel and even a vocal cameo, but seriously they do amazing work and I'm always super pleased to see their work spread around. They put out a decent-length Donkey Kong video for EVERY DAY this past December and all of them were varied and interesting!! Their analysis is great, and their editing is frenetic and hilarious- so I never just listen to these, I always give them my full attention.
These aren't the ONLY youtubers I watch or anything but they're my favs that come to mind right now.

i'm looking for more youtube videos to have on in the background while i work, could you recommend any youtubers you like?
Here’s a smattering of YouTubers that I can broadly recommend, excluding some obviously mega popular content creators (I’m not gonna be like “hey have you heard of the McElroy brothers and Defunctland?”)
Jeremy Parish for his series like NES Works and Game Boy Works in which he looks at a system’s entire library in chronological order. He’s great about providing the historical context to convey how much of a step forward (or back) each game was for its time
GeoWizard’s straight line missions across Wales, in which he attempts to hike in as straight of a line as possible across Wales, and the subsequent mission across Norway. It’s much more entertaining than it sounds
Movies with Mikey. He’s always got an interesting angle on the movies he talks about, and in a sea of nitpicky CinemaSins wannabes it’s nice to have someone just talk about why he likes movies
Maggie Mae Fish is a rising star of the leftist YouTube media critic scene. He videos can be a little heavier since she talks about a lot of media that covers heavy topics and she doesn’t shy away from political angles, but her stuff’s always interesting. A good first video to watch from her is her Cats video
8-Bit Music Theory goes over my head half the time but it’s always interesting to see in-depth analysis of game music.
For something similar but more digestible to music theory casuals, check out Scruffy, who also has a great video on Sonic music
Errant Signal’s like one of the granddaddies of thoughtful game criticism on YouTube, looking at them more as art than as products, but I still gotta recommend him. His “Children of Doom” series charting the evolution of the FPS genre has been interesting lately
I’ve liked alexandcrackers forever and her stuff (usually about games, but sometimes about web culture and other stuff) never gets enough attention. She’s always got an interesting angle and she makes it fun
He can be a bit dry but donoteat01′s Franklin series in which he charts the development of an American city from the colonial era into the modern day through Cities Skylines and uses it to talk about all sorts of political issues relating to urban planning is super informative. He also made the definitive video on why Elon Musk’s loop is a bad idea
Supporting Actor Spotlights (formerly No Small Parts) looks at the whole career of a single supporting actor in film and TV and it really gives you an appreciation for character actors
Studson Studio does very entertainingly edited craft videos where he makes scale replicas of buildings and other things from games and whatnot out of largely recycled materials. He also does some Gunpla kitbashes
GST Channel does cool genre-based mixes of obscure SNES and Genesis music as well as artist spotlights for classic game composers (especially all the people who made music for old licensed games that was way better than it needed to be), including extra trivia popups if you’re watching along and not just listening to the tunes
If any of y’all like Transformers and don’t already follow him then I gotta plug Thew Adams for his extremely entertaining figure reviews in which he gives love to even the weirdest and least mainstream of Transformers
I don’t even follow sports but I’ll watch any sports video by Jon Bois. Easiest to recommend is his history of the Seattle Mariners
Stop Skeletons from Fighting is one of the most fun retro game channels, particularly their Punching Weight series where they celebrate the weird, ambitious, and unnecessary
Okay I could go on and on but I think this is a huge enough list

i did indeed mean midsommar, many apologies! i was 7 pages deep into an essay about modern horror and I honestly couldn't breathe without hearing cheesy scare chords. thank you for listening regardless of my silly error. as for the essay, the one i watched is by kay and skittles! highly recommend, it explains things very well and in a way i found fun to listen to.
ah, I'm glad I didn't somehow manage to miss something lmao, honestly wouldn't surprise me if I'd managed to like... forget a whole other conversation or something. but anyway thank you for the rec! I will definitely have to check all of this out, especially as I'm on a major video essay kick right now. just finished watching Defunctland's history of Disney's FastPass and I'm going insane. he did so much.
