Charles finished listening to the voicemail that you sent him 30 minutes ago. He couldn't believe that it finally happened. Sure, you spent half a month fighting with him - but he thought that things would get better after that.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I think Fangbanger is the best band on the planet right now.

And I found them on TikTok only a few months ago, then drove across the country from West Virginia to Oregon to see them.

Sometimes I feel like maybe I'm seriously messed up in the head because I can't remember if I ever listened to any other band this much. And there have been a few, but those few have a lot more albums. But I'm listening to the same 19 songs a hell of a lot now. We'll get to that in a minute.

I grew up on Duran Duran and they've been my #1 favorite band no matter what else comes along since their first album. When I was a little kid, I knew I was alone in the world, and all I had were the Duran Duran tapes my aunt gave me to help me make sense of life and figure myself out with. So music has always been how I relate to the world and move through life. The next big one was Nirvana during high school, as I related a lot to them too. At 20 I got into Rammstein more just liking the heavier sound tbh. At 30 I was introduced to Twiztid and the older stuff felt relatable, but as I got older, like over 40, I reverted back to my classic rock, 80s & some early 90s.

But here at 45, I've got a new #1 favorite band and I'm probably old enough to be their momma. LOL But they are so fucking great!!!

I can't really put my finger on what it is, or how to explain it. I loved their energy from the start, from the first live from their garage that I saw, it's like what it must've been like for the older Gen X'ers who went to punk, post punk & goth shows as teenagers in the early 80's when I was still in elementary school. But it's definitely something that can't be faked. Just the same as my other new favorite band One Way Sky is, totally different band, but they authentically have this blend of chill 70s rock & 90s alternative vibe going. To compare, I remember hearing White Stripes when they first came out and thought they sucked because they're trying too hard to sound and look like they're from the 70s. So it's definitely something special to organically have that vibe and sound and feel and energy, like it could have come from another time. And be super relevant to someone my age too. Yeah, that's why I like both of these young bands. And with their energy, and how cool they are, their music, in some small way they make me feel like I'm 18 again when I listen to them. And I think they are everything I wanted to be when I grew up.

The first song I really related to and felt was Vertigo, then when I heard Disappear, yeah it certainly fit what happened at that time and it was a good driving force to get me to literally disappear 2600 miles away like "🖕 you I'm gone!" LOL And another older one that is absolutely great is Death in December. I really did cry the first time I heard it. It's such an amazing song!

So it definitely takes some work to find all of the songs that they've ever put out into the world, and I've counted 19 between YouTube, Spotify, and SoundCloud where there is more of the older stuff. And even with YouTube, you'd need to know that they were The Faint Endless before becoming Fangbanger. So here's the list I got:

hi! i was just wondering if you had any pointers for someone wanting to learn korean? i've wanted to for so long but i'm having so much trouble ; o ;

Hey there! Thank you for asking. Of course, I’d be glad to share a few tips with you. First, I must tell you a bit of my journey learning it, because I believe it is important to consider the environment surrounding any person learning a foreign language. Long post warning, I’ve put it all for you Anony.

I do not reside in Korea, but I have been two months last year. However, I barely practiced there because I was constantly surrounded by english speakers. 

- Lesson 1: If you go to Korea, do not hang out only with english speakers...or with one Korean and english speakers, because people will all switch to english. - Lesson 2: Whenever you meet Korean people, they will 99.99% of the time try to speak English to you. Do not give up, and continue speaking Korean to them. Even if it’s broken. Even if you’re shy. Speak Korean even if they reply in English. 

My main language is French. I have learned English mostly by myself while playing video games (therefore Korean is not the first language I’ve self-studied). I’ve been learning Korean for three years now mostly by myself, and I’m far from fluent. I’m an intermediate, and I’m planning to do TOPIK2 this year and I’m reaching for level 4/6. I must warn you however that I have been Italian and Chinese at the same time with my university, so I don’t spend 100% of my time learning Korean, but I’ve been spending minimum 30 minutes a day learning it in various ways:

Learn the alphabet 한글. No only it will be much easier to learn new words, but your pronunciation will be much better.  Try this order.

Learn the “soft consonants” ㅂㅈㄷㄱㅅㅁㄴㅇㄹㅎ

Learn the “hard consonants” ㅋㅌㅊㅍㅋ

Learn the “double consonants” ㅃㅉㄸㄲㅆ

Learn the “basic vowels” ㅗㅓㅏㅣㅐㅔㅡㅜ

Learn the “complex vowels” ㅛㅕㅒㅖㅠㅑ

Learn the differences between polite speeches, especially the -요. 

NEVER use Google Translate (it doesn’t do the difference between the polite and impolite speechs). Use Papago translator with moderation. 

Never ever translate literally, it’s hyper unnatural and I’m guilty to have done it. Especially expressions like: “It depends.” or even “How are you?”. 

Learn vocabulary with Anki, which I recommend HIGHLY (it’s free) and I still use it now even after 3 years!

I have Korean friends (I also met some on hellotalk, no need to go to Korea, even though I must say it’s quite crucial at some point to try to understand the culture and practice!), and I still write a lot in Korean to them, so I practice writing and reading with them. 

Writing a diary is super effective as well! Because you learn the words that you’d actually use! It doesn’t have to be a paper diary. What I do is every time I post on instagram, I write in Korean, English and French.

I talk to myself a lot in Korean and read aloud. So if you’re like me and you basically have no one to practice your speaking abilities with, don’t worry.

Listen to music in Korean. Find the lyrics. Make a file or print them. Highlight the words you don’t know. The grammar you don’t know. (It’s especially hard because there are a lot of abbreviations.) EXAMPLE I DID A YEAR AGO WITH JIMIN “PROMISE”.

Even though vocabulary is important, grammar is crucial. Learn a bit everyday. I recommend learning with Integrate Korean Grammar and howtostudykorean.com

Use Naver dictionary a lot to learn new words and it also has grammar!

Watch Netflix dramas with subtitles in Korean. It’s REALLY discouraging when you’ve just started, I would literally watch 5 minutes of the show in 30 minutes because I would pause all the time. You can also watch it with two subtitles using the app Ntflx multi-sub, but you have to be careful to not just look at the english subtitles. 

Watch every day life show. You know those cheesy high school love romances? They are the best to learn because the plots are simple. Do not do the mistake (like me) to watch Holo and cry because you can’t understand anything: AI and investors and scientific vocabulary is very advanced level. Hell, even cop dramas are hard. 

Please, do not get discouraged if you don’t understand what the actors say. EVEN KOREANS have to focus to understand them because they speak REALLY fast. I still can’t understand all and I watch with Korean subtitles. 

Play games in Korean: as you might have noticed my Animal Crossing: New Horizons game is in Korean. And god did this help me to learn vocabulary and grammar.

Listen to ASMR in Korean. I know people hide ASMR like it’s an addiction, but I swear, it’s SO GOOD to learn the pronunciation. They speak slow and say short sentences. I recommend: UNO ASMR, Veiled ASMR, Loadiy ASMR and Boyoong ASMR. 

The best for last: Motivate yourself. Learn anything about Korean culture. Watch videos. Watch movies. Read articles. Cook with Korean recipes. DIY in Korean. There is more than Kpop and Kdrama, and it saddens me that a lot of people stick only to that phase. (BUT REMEMBER THERE’S NO SHAME TO LIKE THOSE, I literally starting learning Korean because I wanted to understand more the lyrics of BTS’s songs so...)

Look, I know there are tons of people who say they’ve learned it in a ridiculous amount of time and it is extremely discouraging. Even Korean friends might discourage you at some points because they come from a culture where “productivity and effectiveness” is EXTREMELY HIGH. 

But, seriously, language learning is not a race, and I try to remind that to myself everyday. Also keep in mind that it’s one of the HARDEST languages in the world for English speakers to learn (and has been classified so by the United-States foreign office).  Two summers ago, I spent 5-7 hours a day studying in the biggest stress ever and I realized it lead me nowhere because stressing yourself to learn impacts your brain in a way that it just doesn’t want to retain information. So if I can give you a final tip is: Enjoy learning this amazing language and if you have any questions feel free to ask me. :)

Anyway. If I have no good pictures I have even worse words. I've never felt such overwhelming love and energy from a crowd. I've been to a lot of concerts. Hell I saw Justin Bieber in the bit on purpose tour. And it didn't even remotely compare.

While I know some ARMYs are crazy. I can truly say that there is so much more good in this Fandom than crazies.

Yes. I was up at 2:30 am to get a good spot for merch. Yes. I woke up the day after the first show absolutely dead set on getting into the pit the next day and spending way too much money on tickets. But I'll say this.

IT WAS WORTH IT.

Day 1. At sound check Hobi waved at us after I aggressively waved at him. Jimin and Jungkook stood/crouched in front of us and stared at us singing to them. I can't tell you how absolutely beautiful these men are. But I'll try.

Let's go in fan chant order shall we?

Namjoon: absolutely flawless. His features are soft and hard all at once. He has a natural glow to him.

Seokjin: let's start by saying I already thought Jin was the most handsome man I'd ever seen. I cannot express to you with words how STUNNING Jin is. He's breathtaking on another level. Photos and videos do him no justice. He's is GORGEOUS. Truly a God.

Yoongi: Jesus fucking christ. Min yoongi is FLAWLESS. that man looks soft and just perfect. There is a distinct difference you can see in his whole body as he switches personas. It's phenomenal. He's just so beautiful and it pairs with his rough voice so well.

Hoseok: Another man I can't express in words how amazing he is. His features are so muted in pictures. Idk how. But he is so distinctive in person. And he's MAGNETIC @trinitysroses warned us after her show about him. But nothing can prepare you for Jung hoseok. HOBI IS A GOD. Through and through.

Jimin: oh my godddd. Jimin. I could barely take my eyes off him when the danced. He was wearing a Hoodie during SC and seemed like he was woken up recently. He was so cute and attentive. And as always went so hard during the dance part. Jimin was absolutely ethereal. If you ever doubted that jimin looks like an angel in person. Don't. He does 500%. His features are so sharp but he also is just a soft mochi bean. But his aura is serious and commanding it was truly a sight to behold and an experience I never would be ready for.

Taehyung: first of all. This man is HUGE. Okay. I'm not a great judge cause I'm tiny. But he is MASSIVE I was not prepared when he came out for SC. And holy shit this man exudes sexual energy. Even when he's cute? Idk. But he does. He's beautiful and so attentive to every one and he really just always brightened the room.

Jungkook: shook is not strong enough of a word to describe how I felt seeing kookie. Little baby bunny is a MAN. His jawline is so defined and he's so beautiful. He dances with grace and passion to rival jimin. His energy was absolute infectious. He's also waaayyyyy larger than anticipated. But he's also got an oddly intimidating persona and aura. It was incredible.

During the show:

I watched jungkook SNAP during baepsae. I was witness to kookie singing to jimin cutely and namjoon screaming eat that shit at jimin during anpanman. The dancing was beyond anything you could imagine. To see the tiny details of each choreography in real life was breath stealing. And THEIR VOCALS. Let me tell you. The studio versions? Compared to the live versions are absolute shit. The depth and dimensions of their voices are erased and not presented as strongly as they are. ESPECIALLY Jin. But Jimin? Oh my God. And the depth and silkiness of taehyung voice. Jungkook and his high notes? I cried. I'll tell you that. There was so much I just was overwhelmed.

I left that show feeling empty and soulless. After SC I couldn't speak for 20 minutes.

Day 2 I got blown a kiss not only from namjoon. But also the one and only Mr. Worldwide handsome. I also got a huge heart and and "I love you" from jimin. Hobi dances with us. Hobi sprayed us with water. Tae danced with us and smiled so brightly at us. Yoongi came to be hella hype with us and we got a cute wave from him too.

During the show:

Day 1 we failed yoongi and jimin with fan chants during their songs. Day we got them both and the smiles we got for it were surreal. Jimin looked so happy I shed tears. And we got a small hearteu in the camera. Yoongi kitten smiled twice and it was so sweet.

Day 1 everyone also only started chanting for taes solo stage. And me being me was mad af. So day 2 you bet your ass I put all my heart, soul, energy, and effort into making sure everyone got their name chanted before their stage.

This has been insanely long. But. I have yet to process how my life works after seeing such an amazing show and having so much energy from BTS and the rest of the ARMYs in there with me.

If you've read this far. Thanks. I'm still crying listening to them and seeing their videos. I'm so proud of them and I won't even start on the UN/UNICEF initiative cause I'll go on even more. Just know that I think Namjoon is an artist with words and his entire message was inspiring and I hope it invokes a new age of self love and speaking out among more than just ARMYs.

Okay I've been puzzling over this for a few days so I'll just ask, I don't understand what you mean when you say it's disrespectful to write about John's actual death in fic. why/how is it disrespectful?

why wouldn’t it be disrespectful? 

you have to consider that fanfic, for the most part, is just a bunch of thirsty fans writing wish fulfillment. very very few set out to write accurate, biographical retellings of the events that took place during the beatles’ lives, mostly because those things already exist, and there’s like… no need for anyone to rehash it unless they’re like conducting their own interviews or something. but in that case, you’re no longer writing a fanfic. what i’m getting at here is that fic is kind of a frivolous medium, in the grand scheme of things, which makes it unfit for certain topics (the most extreme example being using the holocaust as a backdrop for some shitty love story with a nazi guard and a jewish person as your otp. the argument here isn’t that holocaust stories should never be told; in mature, respectful hands, holocaust stories can be told in a poignant, informative way–see schindler’s list or the boy in the striped pajamas, to name a couple–but it should never be reduced to like a porno fantasy sequence).

there is a gray area when it comes to writing fic, though. a lot of people use writing as a way to cope with their own experiences, so while one could argue that topics such as abuse and rape are too complex to be used as a backdrop for a love story (because, let’s face it, the majority of fics are love stories), we don’t know what the author has experienced. in my opinion, it’s not unreasonable for a young writer (say 12 or 13 years old) who has experienced abuse to write a story in which the hot next door neighbor swoops in and saves them from their circumstances and gives them a better life. on the surface, this is a “problematic” story, but a young writer wouldn’t know that or care, they just wish it would happen. which brings us back to my first point: fanfiction is wish fulfillment. 

so my question is: why on earth would a fan wish for john to be dead? why would you wish to see paul grieving? why would you want to give his murderer any more attention than he already has? that’s the real kicker here, for me. writing about john’s death is different because he was actually murdered. to make his murderer as a character in your fic is like… so gross. to be fair, i think there’s a difference between telling a fic where john and/or paul just happen to die in a fictional way that makes sense with the plot of your story. i just don’t think john’s real death should be taken lightly. 

the fics i’ve stumbled upon that touch on his death (i’ve never read one that was about his death specifically, but it’s been thrown into other fics without reason or warning) use it solely evoke “feels” or make you cry or whatever. if an author can’t make you feel something without bringing up a real life tragedy and reminding you that someone you love is literally dead, i have to question if they’re a good writer at all. it’s an easy, guaranteed way to upset your audience. 

there’s a fic i’ve read (i won’t mention it by name, but i’m sure most of us have read it) that is literally a get together fic starting when john and paul first met. it’s a sweet little story about them falling in love, all pre-fame, but throughout the fic paul has these random premonitions which make him push john away or whatever. so that right there is like just a forced, random conflict and the fic would have honestly been more enjoyable without it. but at the end of the fic, when they finally get together and all is well, the author ends it with something like “but we all know they can’t live happily ever after as john’s life ended on december 8th, 1980 as paul had predicted…” like?? okay?? that literally had nothing to do with the story. it was just supposed to be one last punch in the gut, i guess, and that’s what i find disrespectful. a real person’s actual murder shouldn’t be used for shock value. the fic i mentioned is like 200k; it should be able to make the audience feel something without ending it with “lmao but they’ll never be happy because john is dead.” do you understand? 

again, i’ve never read a fic that is focused specifically on the day john died and paul’s reaction to it, and i imagine that some of them must exist as a coping mechanism. i would never contact any of these authors directly or like try to tell them they’re wrong, because it’s impossible to know their motivation; maybe they had a loved one who died, or was murdered, and they’re using writing as a way to understand their own feelings. that’s totally fine. i would encourage it, even. that being said, i can’t help but side-eye some of the people i’ve seen planning fics like this, when they’re like “i’m writing a 1980 fic and you guys are going to cry your eyes out paul is going to suffer >:))))” 

like. what is wrong with you. why would you do that. these are real people, paul did suffer, and that pain is not our playground. god there’s even a gifset that goes around which shows paul in the 80s tearing up while listening to one of john’s songs, and someone added a caption like “he’s so hot while he’s grieving.” like that is so fucked up?? 

writing about john’s death because you think paul is hot while he grieves, or because you like “paul in pain” stories, or because, for some fucked up reason, you want to write about death in graphic detail, then you’re being disrespectful. i don’t see any way around this. unless you’re very young or very fortunate, someone in your life has died. how would you feel if people were exploiting that and using it as a backdrop for some quasi-love story? 

like, true, it’s very unlikely that paul would ever see our fanfiction (though there are fucked up kids who tweeted images and links to fucking red hall during his twitter q&a and got their asses blocked–good riddance), but i think if we respect him as a person, and respect his feelings and realize that this is something he actually lived through and has to deal with to this day, not some quick little story that you can read for “feels” and will be over in 30 minutes, it becomes unimaginable to use that for entertainment. 

like i mentioned earlier, i’m sure it’s totally possible to write an informative and respectful retelling of john’s death. i just don’t think it could ever happen in fanfiction. it’s not the right medium. 

fanfic is a great, safe way to explore all kinds of topics and kinks, but when real people are involved, that changes things a little. if you want to expand on someone’s murder and tell a story about it, then you should probably write about fictional characters instead imo.

Seriously though, I have no idea. It’d probably depend on how I feel at the time and how my possible future wife would feel. I’d like to name any kids I have after characters I’m fond of, maybe Peter for a boy after Peter Parker. Probably give him Clark as a middle name too after superman. On the off chance I ever marry a Japanese woman though I’d insist we name our son Goku, but that’s a very specific situation so I don’t see it happening.

My mother, my paternal grandparents, and all of my old pets that have passed away.

Are we talking in a romantic relationship ending sense or a friendship ending sense? If it’s the former I have no idea, no dating experience. Pretty meh, had a number of ups and downs, some really bad days, and some very good ones. And of course I discovered just how unbearably frustrating and depressing politics can really be and how much America and my own country make me want to bang my head against a wall. So, not a great year, but for me personally I coped alright. I just wish I’d done more to move forward with my life, like finding a full time job. i’m stuck in part time and I’m still looking.

I don’t think I’ve cried for that kind of reason. I usually only cry if I’m very sad or depressed over something, extreme annoyance tends to manifest in anger, ranting and fidgeting for me.

I named my first cat Socks.

I Didn’t realize there had ever been any cast changes on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers until Kimberly left because I missed the episode writing out Jason, Zack and Trini, so I somehow didn’t notice that the black and yellow rangers were being played by actors of completely different races in the later parts of season 2 and season 3 until years after the fact. No, seriously, I was just that stupid as a really little kid.

Once when I was a kid I drew on the walls of my parents bedroom to make the place look like a jungle, as well as drawing whiskers and animal markings on me and my sister’s faces. I don’t remember it honestly, but I can tell my parents were mad about it.
