Wtnv ep 250 spoilers:

The episode felt...shallow. They didn't explore the emotional ties between any of the characters, even when it was plot relevant. Tamika raised the Boy for a year and didn't even say goodbye or try to save him from Lauren. Carlos knew Kevin for a full decade and they didn't so much as speak to each other.

Then Carlos severed the portal between the Desert Otherworld and Night Vale just like that? Where is the emotional weight behind that decision? Even from a scientific standpoint, there's so much about the Desert Otherworld that we don't know, and that connection was just kinda casually cut. (Even though, as an aside, Desert Bluffs Too hasn't been a threat to Night Vale for years - decades, from their perspective - and so it feels hasty to cut off access to an entire town as a precaution.) It feels like that storyline might be done, and it's such wasted potential if so.

Speaking of wasted potential - Lauren's departure, and her lackluster interactions with Kevin. A few vaguely mean words, and she decides to leave? Why? We're not given any insight. Kevin and Lauren's vaguely antagonistic relationships was fantastic, and even that received little fanfare in the end.

This arc could have ended in so many different ways, and it was ultimately so unsatisfying.

Yes I did! I actually knew about the comic a couple years back, because I saw a screencap of golden child William Hawkes and was vaguely reminded of Jason Grace from the Heroes of Olympus series LMAO

I didn't follow through reading it then, however, because 1) as I mentioned I was very much into the Percy Jackson and the Olympians fandom at the time and 2) life just got in the way as it tends to do ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

But then, around the beginning of this month, I was reminded of the webtoon by looking into another similar one (called The Interpretation of Shadows) and thought "hm, let's see what it's about" and oh boy.

Oh Fucking Boy.

I read the damn thing in three days. THREE DAYS. I went through 150+ chapters in three days. That's 50+ per day. I was so fucking invested (I still am) and sped through the thing because I have no discipline and I love me a good mystery/thriller series. I'm definitely going to reread it at some point, since I'm sure I missed out on some key things, but it's so fucking good!

Silly Game Time: Who are some of your favorite alien (non-human *and* extra-terrestrial) characters? And what do you like about them?

They can be from sci-fi or fantasy, from other worlds or dimensions or realms. All that matters is that they're not from Earth and that they're not human in any traditional sense (and, most of all, that you find them interesting).

MY FAVOURITE ALIENS. i've been a little bit in love with space since i was 9.

and for the recognisably human, but still extraterrestrial, because i really wanted to include these guys:

mara of the acoma from feist & wurts' empire trilogy. she is one of my favourite fictional women ever. in the context of her own series, she's not an alien, but in the context of the riftwar saga (which was published first and contain more elements of feist's mainline plot than the empire trilogy), she is, so. i think she counts.

the mandalorian. i'm not immune to single fathers... or general badassery...

todd from the knife of never letting go (book) / chaos walking (movie). i have fond memories of going to see this at the drive-in with a friend when it came out.

actually, this list is shorter than i thought it would be 🥺 there's a couple of other books/movies i love about space but they're all human-focused and mostly about astronauts. if anyone has any recs pretty please drop them below?

I think I like shameless because it allows character who had emotional parental abuse to have complicated relationships with those parents but not necessarily have to forgive them, because it hits very personally for me and it's nice when I get to see characters who aren't forced by the narrative to forgive their abusers and allowed to have complex feelings and relationships instead of it being all black and white all the time

I’ve put off posting this for months because I wanted to find my comics so I could talk about how she fits into this one story wise, but I’ve officially given up on that so AT LONG LAST here’s Lauren in The Midnight Giant!

Comic Lauren is younger and a little less mature than her show counterpart, she has less of a parental role towards Hilda and enjoys messing with her. She’s considered a lot less…reliable by her mother. But she genuinely tries, she does everything she can to help her family and prove to her Mum that she’s capable, but that’s a little hard when Johanna’s focus is on Hilda’s shenanigans so often…
