La pubblicità, così come è stata descritta, ha radici nella storia dell'uomo molto pù profonde di quanto si possa immaginare: basti pensare che recenti scavi archeologici effettuati a Pompei, hanno riportato alla luce incisioni di stampo politico che, rapportate alla situazione sociale e tecnologica dell'epoca, ci danno la possibilità di considerarle pubblicità a tutti gli effetti.
Le successive rivoluzioni tecnologiche che hanno dato un grande apporto, in maniera crescente, in questo ambito, sono sicuramente l'invenzione della stampa, della radio e della televisione, ma, come in ogni rivoluzione, la loro applicazione reale nel mondo del marketing non è stata immediata.
