will this comic Ever end???
I was blocked on this for the longest time but Justin's resignation kind of reminded me of the spirit of the thing again and I realized, wait, we haven't really explored what pushed Bertie to board that plane and show up like a wet r*t on the doorstep. Any excuse to draw more prairie bros :)
(and you know, not that this comic takes place in the present day any longer with how slowly I've been adding to it, but you just Know bertie is one of Those Guys who bases his entire personality around hating Justin... even after he's gone...)
some notes and explanations where I think of them
sorry sask i can pick on you because we Both have annoying premiers, ours is just louder (although this flashback represents [groan] simpler times)
back at u of t when wexit was big in the news, the western canadian contingent of my cohort formed a group chat called wexit and "let's wexit on out of here" became a common phrase during our trip to ottawa, so it's stuck with me lol. Fond memories of showing our Ontarian classmates our shitty Alberta health cards at their bougie rest stops.
BC isn't real. would a person who's definitely not hiding in BC say that? Maybe.
I did try to think of spicier insults than "liberal" but the only one i could think of that wasn't gross was hypocrite and that didn't fit contextually, sigh sigh. but it remains an enormous insult in alberta at least ahaha
i feel bad for putting mani through this but in a short time from this comic he will have a premier everyone is jealous of. hang in there, mani...
obligatory reference to bert's og bio where he gets drunk and sleeps it off at 24 hour tims
the flashbacks include bertie kissing the cod / getting screeched in, playing hockey with ben and the rupert fam, skiijoring in banff, regatta day in st. johns, checking out borealopelta at the royal tyrell, and a quilting bee with the atlantic coasters
HE DID MAKE THE SHORTBREAD WITH HIS OWN HANDS!! i think bert is the guy who doesn't know how to cook rice BUT he can do shortbread/pie crust really well. Trust me.
something something i spend enough time torturing bertie i need to remember him happy so that i can also remember to be happy in these Trying Times

i meant to do this ages ago but you know, stuck in BC, work, tragedy, etc etc. but today i'm home alone and can cheer myself up by doing this :) I did a couple of takes, second one is a little weepier, and that's my unedited voice on laptop mic because it's been So Long.
it's hard to voice bert normally because a lot of the energy i summon for him involves speaking tersely/more monotone but omg crying AND drunk bert? who's this
thank you @nakamopapina for this scene that i think about constantly and always cheers me up <3
I made an animation thingy! This one has no audio though, that is because I have no way to add audio to them. Thus the subtitles.
This is a little party the Provinces are attending. (Owen and Joel no longer trust the punch)
Also, enjoy a lil bit of the dirty moneys.

IAMP Characters
A long overdue reference list for tumblr for ctcsherry's provinces and territories, around which we based the YouTube I Am Matthewian Project (2009-2013) and which subsequently inspired @project-canada (2013-2017).
Please note: not all the characters received human names while the project was active. Please see my post on human name explanations (and the notes for a couple of characters I missed), I have included the fanon names that I am aware of.)
While I did not create these characters, I was part of the cast/crew of IAMP from the fall of 2009 until the end, so I'm happy to clarify whatever I (or anyone else who was around!) can remember or dig up. I also just want everyone to keep in mind that the Hetalia fandom was a very different place in 2009, and a lot of characterizations do rely on tongue-in-cheek stereotypes. They have been interpreted a lot over the past 15+ years by different people. Take it with a grain of salt!
Rather than link to the IAMP wiki, which has been edited by non-cast/crew members and thus has dubious or non-canon information, I'll link to Sherry's (ctcsherry) original bios for each province. While the 2009 LJ post in Hetanada still exists, the images are not retrievable from there even with the WayBack machine.
Alberta - Ralph Campbell (172cm - 5'8")

British Columbia - Victoria "Van" Cheung (160cm - 5'3")

Manitoba - [ see above post ] (168cm - 5'6")

New Brunswick - Marie McCain (170cm - 5'7")

Newfoundland (and Labrador) - Benjamin O'Reilly (178cm - 5'10" as an adult)

Northwest Territories - [ see above post ]

Nova Scotia - Joel McKenzie (178 cm - 5'10")

Nunavut - Nanook Puqiqnak (~70cm - 2'4")

Ontario - Oliver Stanley (173 cm - 5'8")

Prince Edward Island - Annie Montgomery (145cm - 4'9")

Quebec - Jean Tremblay (175cm - 5'9")

Saskatchewan - [ see above post ] (176cm - 5'9")

Yukon - Kate Sahneuti (158cm - 5'2")

Some other bits:

I don't know if Sherry's height chart still exists anywhere online currently, but I'll put it here for reference as well.

#iammatthewian project#iammatthewian#iamp#projectcanada#hope this helps!#guess i can make this the pinned post over on ye olde procan blog#linking to the wiki does not work well so i have ended up replacing the links with the bios themselves#all these images were created by ctcsherry#added the heights in cm and ft

Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4
Notes below
1) Oh boy that quote from Douglas Haig in theory is one he said when he visited in St Johns (this was from A Sisterhood of Suffering and Service ) but then the Fighting Newfoundlander source claims it was said by Lieutenant-General Sir Aylmer Hunter-Weston. What is the truth when the sources conflict? I don’t know. I decided to keep it as Haig because there is a lot of complicated feelings around that man and the decisions he made (especially when reading Into the Blizzard and A Boy from Botwood) 2) I was having conflicting feelings about posting this and having Ben be bitter about the war, with the intentions of memory being more from a working class perspective. I feel like a lot of war narratives glorify it as nation building and a wonderful thing to happen and when boys become men, when in reality its the poor people being sent out to die on the rich mans orders and being promised the world, when in reality all they get is shit. It was quite depressing reading post war narrative where, while some companies hired veterans, there was literally the need to hide the fact you were a war veteran because companies did not want to hire disabled men who had PTSD. 3) Bert is the type of man who typically would look away from someone expressing an emotion that is not anger. The fact he even attempted to comfort is miraculous haha. He is also secretly Very Thirsty for all the Information because he was raised on war propaganda and thinks the war is cool 4) Yes for some god foresaken reason I did read numerous books just to draw some sad war comic, please do not question how my brain works. I suppose this is more fun than a research paper.
5) Ben survived Beaumont-Hamil and went on to fight some of the other battles such as at Gueudecourt, Sailly-Saillisel and ending at the Battle of Aras, where he lost his leg (is this a spoiler??) (Maybe the question is Why did I think this Through so Much) I should probably say I’ve put him in the first 500 mythos, so he did go to Gallipoli as well and got to enjoy all the flies and trench rats. : )
6) Looking forward to wrapping this comic up. 7) Let me know if you want to know anything else

Who are your favourite characters in the IAMP? Mine are NB, NS, PEI, Newfoundland, BC, Saskatchewan, Yukon, NWT and Nunavut.
While I love all the characters my favourites have to be ONT, MAN & QUE. So the centrals!

I got to visit Whitehorse last summer.
When I lived back east, it was about a day’s drive to get to Montreal. I knew it was an old city—older than anything else I’d seen—and tried to press as much of it into my memory as possible, saving the smell of rain on the cobblestones and the sounds of piano from a third-story apartment for my next murky Connecticut day.
Living on the west coast kind of sucks. The weather never changes. Back in August, my mother got some ticket discount from Alaska Airlines. I convinced her to book a trip north. It was always our inside joke that I wanted to see Whitehorse, a tiny industrial town in the middle of nowhere. We spent a few days in Alaska and drove over the mountains to Yukon. As we reached 6,000 feet, my water bottle burst open and soaked the carpeting in our rental car.
We stayed at a sled-dog lodge a few miles outside the city, down two kilometers of unpaved and unmarked road. We spent a few days hiking and visiting museums and admiring the plant life. I was recovering from a head cold that hit the morning we flew out, aggravated by the chilly, damp Alaskan summer. It was weird to finally realize I dream I’d had since sixth grade.
That was the year I emerged from my childhood cocoon. Looking back, it’s the watershed moment when I began to use the internet and uncover the world in earnest. I don’t remember how I found Project Canada, then called the IAMP. I think Yukon was my favorite character, even back then. Nascent admiration for butch gals, I guess. Actually, my trip north wasn’t even the first time I’d gotten my family to visit Canada because of something in the IAMP. The summer between sixth and seventh grade I convinced my parents to see more of Eastern Canada. We did a multi-week tour of the maritimes, driving from one side of Newfoundland to the other in our packed minivan.
I’ll never forget Belle Isle, or Lanse-aux-Meadows, or the iceberg in St. John’s harbor. I’ll never forget picking bakeapples as we made our way along the boardwalks, or the furious winds at North America’s most eastern point. I’ll never forget the majesty of the fjords, like something out of a Decemberists’ song, or the taste of cod cheeks and pineapple crush (which I still haven’t found outside Newf).
Thank you, Project Canada, for making my world a little bit bigger.

Opus Daily Practice: 5. Silhouette (& 6. Pattern)
my first thought with "silhouette" is usually character design related - I did the black outlines first in pen and then did the rest of the line art with coloured pens before going in with pencil crayons. I did do markers for the skin but they smudged like hell.
this took me longer than I wanted to because I was trying out combining materials and I kept losing daylight and getting distracted by obligations but! here's the result of my usual insecurity about character differentiation that rears its head every few months or so.
sask in my head is a very solid dependable rectangle and ben is more pointy triangle. (also: ben is canonically taller than him by like 2cm)

in true canadian fashion: sorry i'm late
although, in some ways, i'm actually early. You know what I realized doing this ambitious painting? this year is going to be the 15th anniversary of IAMP.
The call for auditions was uploaded September 22, 2009, and if I recall correctly my audition as artist and VA was accepted around October or November of that same year. I've grown a lot as an artist and as a person in that long time and for some weird reason I just can't let these guys go.
anyway, thanks for everyone who participated in the roulette, I know it doesn't seem like a big deal but I really struggle drawing all of these guys without losing steam. it really helped! especially since I don't do a lot of gouache work and I second guessed myself a lot. It warms my heart a little to see you guys engaged in this silly game.
what else is there to say. oh yeah, I put two types of maple leafs. the stereotypical sugar maple is in the upper right of course, but I also put a manitoba maple in the lower left because that's the kind of maple I'm most familar with where I'm from. it's long been my mission to bring the western rep in whatever I do, so it's kind of my love letter signature to my own constantly changing understanding of Who Am I and Where Am I From.
anyway. enjoy :) i enjoyed making it. thanks to ctcsherry for creating these guys

Here are some Nyotalia doodles with Sask and Newfoundland (plus a bonus Nova Scotia, and a very little Nunavut)
The spicy snacks is a reference to @funofcanada ‘s headcanon that Nova Scotia is pretty much unaffected by spiciness. (Sask can handle spiciness, but can’t handle anything spicier than Habanero peppers)
The top right pic is more or less because @acetechne ‘s condensed milk comic still lives rent free in my brain, and I still revisit it once in a while (sorry, not sorry)
My personal favourites are the one where Newfoundland is cutting a fish, while wearing an apron that says ‘both fish and women want me’, and Nunavut looking grumpy because his big brother has the audacity to leave him with his stupid girlfriend for like 5 minutes, so he’s purposely acting like a gremlin.
