Thinking that it may be time to just start buying better quality bulk dye supplies for tie-dyeing rather than shelling out for the big pre-made kits
#tie dye#anybody wanna donate to the cause?#if you send me $50 or more I will dye a blanket or comparable item for you maybe?#future tie dye projects#granted it means I'd have to also buy the soda ash separately but that might be a good thing#I've just really wanted to try more techniques and stuff#ice dyeing and mandala folds and such#went to start on that baby blanket for my friend and realized i was out of purple#and while looking at kits to order it struck me that maybe i should just invest a little more up front for larger/higher quality pigments#maybe try dyeing some random pieces and seeing if anybody wants to purchase one even#the dye seller I'm looking at also has a bunch of blank white clothing and accessories for projects#kinda want to try doing a big blankie#faye's most excellent art projects

[vid: video from above showing an artist folding a large sheet into a radial section and then, with the help of tools and rubber bands, elaborately folding it into a sort of zigzag shape. The zigzag is placed on a rack and a cardboard frame is built around it, and then careful stripes of dye are sprinkled across it, covered with ice and then left as the ice melts and carries the dye through the cloth. Once dry, the artist unfolds her work, showing first parallel ripples and then a final mandala-like starburst pattern in beautiful detail and complexity.]/end id.

Shibori Mandala Ice Dyeing -- The Process Illustrated
Shibori is an ancient Japanese dyeing technique that involves folding, twisting or bunching cloth and then binding it to create incredible patterns. The dyeing process is quite playful and the end result is undeniably stylish. We love how no one dyeing will ever be the same, making it clear that the item was hand dyed.
Using ice or snow to create one-of-a-kind vibrant, water-colored textiles while incorporating shibori techniques makes for amazing results. I discovered ice dyeing when a local artist in Portland started selling beautifully hand-dyed, vibrant robes and dresses. I didn’t even know what the technique was called at the time, but I was immediately impressed by the mottled watercolor look, almost cloud-like in the way the colors blended in and out of each other with bursts of contrasting colors here and there.
