Iceland Day 5 - From Seyðisfjörður to Lake Mývatn
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We said goodbye to the cute town of Seyðisfjörður and headed off towards North Iceland. On our way out of Seyðisfjörður, we stopped by a vantage/picnic spot that offered a stunning view of the mountainscape and birds eye view of Egilsstaðir. We did a quick stop at Rjukandafoss. Then we watched as the landscape changed from snowy mountains to a deserted, lifeless environment that resembles what we think Mars would look like.
We will be spending most of the day in the Lake Mývatn area, a lake which had formed from lava eruptions many years ago.(I had a detour to Detifoss on our itinerary, but accidentallly overlooked it and set the GPS to Mývatn. Oops!) Our first stop was Námafjall/Hverir, a geothermal area filled with fumaroles and bubbling mud pools. We immediately noticed an extremely pungent, strong smell of sulfur in the Mars-like landscape. We noticed interesting orange/yellow tinges in the ground, resulting from the sulfur. We then stopped by Grjotagja Cave, which is famous for the Jon/Ygritte scene in GOT. However, we are confused as to how this was the filming location when the actual scene was filmed on a set. The next stop was Hverfjall Crater, which is a volcanic crater. We were able to climb up to the rim of the crater. This attraction was not that enjoyable due to the heavy winds at the top, but we were able to have good views of other nearby craters from there. We then went to Dimmuborgir, which is a lava field filled with interesting huge lava formations and volcanic caves (and the site of Mance Rayder’s wilding army camp). The formations made the area feel very intimidating. After walking around some of the paths there, we went to Hofdi nature preserve with hopes of seeing interesting wildlife and views of the beautiful lake. It felt like being in Maryland again for the first time, with its woody areas, sunniness/warmth, and sounds of birds chirping. However, we quickly got deterred from walking along the path alongside the lake due to swarms of tiny bugs extending as far as the eye could see. Walking through them without inhaling some would have been very difficult, and our clothes soon got lined by bugs landing on them. Therefore, we quickly left the area and moved on to the next spot, Skútustaðagígar, which was filled with pseudocraters formed by steam eruptions resulting from lava heat. Finally, it was time to relax at Mývatn Nature Baths, which is a smaller version of the Blue Lagoon hot thermal bath. It is an outdoor swimming pool offering warm milky blue water filled with minerals like sulfur and a chance for tourists to relax and enjoy the surrounding scenery. We felt like we were back in Cancun again, as it had somewhat a resort feel (although with less tourists and in a more natural setting).
Then it was time to grocery shop. An Icelandic customer saved us from accidentally buying smoked trout (thinking that it was salmon that we could later cook), although we ended up buying a small sample for breakfast. With our groceries in hand, we headed off to our rented apartment in a small and somewhat isolated area called Lauger, where we would be staying for the next two nights. I was lazy when planning and decided to get a place here with the intention of doing day trips to nearby areas so that we can have one day break from moving from one place to another, but had immediately regretted that decision after booking. However, after we found out that we were being upgraded to their nicer apartments that was located on a farm, we ended up being really happy about that mistake so that we can experience an Icelandic farm holiday during this trip. The apartment was super cutely decorated, cozy, and loaded with amenities, and we loved the surrounding nice views and hanging out with the farm animals (including cute affectionate cats and moo-ing cows).
For dinner, we made a gourmet Icelandic meal using pre-marinated lamb from the grocery store. It was delicious, and best of all, a fraction of the price of eating a similar meal in a restaurant! After an evening stroll around the farm and quality time with the two cats that were following us around everywhere, we rested up for the night.

There is a glacier in Iceland, Solheimar, which has retreated a great deal, and every time I go back there and see what's not there any more, it does something to the heart. It makes you realise it's possible for a gigantic natural element to just disappear. #love #iceland2019 #trip #portugal #follow #dosek #water #india #pussy88 #beautifuldestinations #waterfall #onsen #hiking #traveltheworld #guidetoiceland #instoreapp #livinglegend #wheniniceland #norway #sony_photos #instagood #solomonislands #icelandlovers #icelandscape #brasilamadores #icelandsecret #likeforfollow #stubbornmanrúrik #instalike #instoreapp (at Iceland) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTZcuVPg-OT/?utm_medium=tumblr

One of the best parts of traveling across Iceland was taking unknown roads to see the raw nature. Iceland Day 9 - Homebound
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is hard to believe that this is our final day in Iceland before flying back home later this afternoon. We said goodbye to Arnastapi and headed back on the road towards Reykjavík. We stopped by Iceland’s famous black church, Búðakirkja, which is located in isolation in the middle of the Buðahraun lava field with only a solitary guesthouse within proximity. This church definitely stands out amount the more common white/red roofed churches that we have frequently spotted throughout Iceland’s countryside. We continued on our drive, admiring the wispy low hanging clouds that resemble icing resting on top of mountains.
Our last stop before leaving Snaefellsnes was the Gerðuberg basalt columns, which is quite a marvel of nature. It consists of a long wall of hexagonal columns, and made us wonder how nature could make something so intentional like a wall of pillars. Iceland’s wonders of nature will never cease to amaze us!
Finally it was time to head back to society. We headed back towards Reykjavík to go to Iceland’s sole Costco, a stop that we had been looking forward to all trip. At Costco, we were welcomed by an awesome breakfast sample table complete with pastries, muffins, coffee, and juice. The inside layout was pretty similar to other Costcos, but it had different selection of products (eg. excellent outdoor gear section and a focus on lamb products). Michael visited the pharmacy of course, and found out that it wad the only European Costco with a pharmacy. The pharmacy sold only unit dose meds, and filled around 2000 scripts per week. We then went to the food court, which had the customary pizza, hotdog, and chicken bake offerings. We bought a plokkfiskur (hearty fish stew) and a beytingur (mango smoothie). They also had gelato cones, with many delicious flavors to choose from (like mint chocolate chip), although we were too full to try. We visited the next door Bonus for one last Icelandic grocery store run and then filled up on awesomely cheap Costco gas (~15% savings compared to nearby gas stations!). Then it was time to return the car and check in at the airport. We are currently waiting for our flight, enjoying some chicken wing and sushi platters from Costco. Until next time, Iceland!
