I misread “Fanart” as “Screenshot” and I don’t know how, but anyways, it’s the first fanart I’ve done of our under-appreciated girl!

what did serina think of goro can you explain their relationship

Gorou and Sarina's relationship is interesting because it's kind of deceptively simple while being unintentionally complicated by the mountains of baggage they were both unintentionally bringing to things. Sarina -> Gorou is pretty straightforward though; as the one person who was by her side when she had nobody else in the world, he was her light and she obviously adored him. DeviousChair on the OnK subreddit also made a really good point a while back that we know that Sarina had issues with memory loss as her tumor progressed and so past a certain point, her strongest and most immediate memories would have been of Gorou caring for her. This does a lot to inform why she latched onto him and Ai with the intensity that she did, imo; past a certain point they were basically the only consistent comforting presences in her life.

The Ichibanboshi no Spica novel was a bit of a miss for me for various reasons but something it did (however accidentally) that I really liked was emphasizing the way that Gorou was basically everything and everyone to her from her POV, just out of emotional necessity: at various points across the story she compares him to a friend, an older brother, her parents (by contrasting him against them) and, of course, as her crush. I think this confused muddying of feelings and not knowing exactly what to make of their relationship rings really true and makes a lot of sense because like... how do you define a relationship like that? Especially since he wasn't her actual doctor, he was just the emotional support middle aged guy who would hang out with her and have nerdy chats LOL. Sarina had nobody so Gorou had to be her everybody.

That said, while this connection is sweet there's also an unfortunate but tbh inevitable angle of codependency as well. Since Gorou is her everything, if he's gone then she has nothing. Spica touches on this briefly but we see it most clearly in Ruby at the end of the Private arc and going into Mainstay. Even in a life where all of her dreams have come true, where she has a caring and present family and a robust support system of people who love her, she has so many hopes and so much of her emotional well-being riding on the *idea* of Gorou that being faced with a permanent separation from him contributes to a mental health spiral so catastrophic that only Gorou himself seemingly returning to her can hit pause on it.

It probably goes without saying, but this is an insanely unhealthy level of attachment to have to someone! Obviously, everything to do with Aqua and Ruby's mental health is complicated by their unique circumstances and their losing Ai at such a young age but again: this is Ruby 16+ years out from last seeing him, who has grown up surrounded by people who love and support her and her mental wellbeing is still this dependent on the idea of Gorou and she's still convincing herself that she can have her end goal of being in a relationship with him.

@aquahater made a really excellent post touching on this angle of Ruby's clinging onto the idea of Gorou, characterizing it (imo, correctly) as Ruby basically just wanting to live her life as 'Sarina 2.0' and rejecting any changes or emotionally inconvenient truths that could prevent that from happening. It's totally understandable why she would want this and I can't even say I blame her for it... but she does need to accept that it isn't going to work out the way she so obviously hopes it is.

I Want to Eat the Special Lunch!

You: Yawn... Hanayo: Good morning, You-san! You: Hanayo-chan, good morning~ Hanayo: The weather is great today! You: It is, but aren't we meeting a little too early? The restaurant opens for lunch at 11, right? Hanayo: Yes, but every day they only sell five orders of our target, the special lunch item!! The Kazesayaka, Ichibanboshi, Tennotsubu, Tohoku 194, and Inochinoichi rice varieties are combined and cooked in an iron pot to create one-of-a-kind rice balls!! They're paired with pork miso soup and rolled omelet! I absolutely have to try it!! You: .......Well, I want to eat it too. It sounds interesting that they're using different varieties of rice. Hanayo: Right!? You: Alright, then, how about we watch some school idol videos to pass the time? Hanayo: Hold on, You-san! You said the rice varieties sound interesting. We should look up more facts about them! It'll make the rice balls taste even better when we eat them. ♪

SUNSET CAFÉ

Under this beginning of sunset, we can see a silhouette, alone, sitting close to the window, enough to be seen.

About that, the window belongs to a very small and quiet café, with flowers all around the entrance as much as plants inside.

If we approach it again, we can notice that the silhouette is a man who should be in his thirties.

Long green hair buried under a bun, a long lock falling on his face, close to his slender and beautiful hands holding a big book that looks rather old because of the dust that remains on it.

He's handsome and his smile makes him even more radiant than this sunset becoming more and more orange.

At the end of the street, a man, who has rather refined features, seems to be impatient in front of the crosswalk where the cars pass in front of his eyes.

However, there is an equally radiant smile.

On his arm, we see a bouquet of purple flowers as well as his hair in a bun too : all this matches very well with his golden jewelry.

His face, his slender body; everything, but then everything gives it a serene look.

When the light finally turns green, the young man walks more than in a hurry, but we can notice his serene look with his big and beautiful smile.

As expected, he headed to the memorable café described earlier.

" - Hey Sougen ! I'm really sorry for being late. But, I brought you some flowers as an apology !

- Oh, Suzuran. Thank you so much for the flowers, I will take care of them, I assure you. Also, I didn't realize you were late, I was reading that book. By the way, I brought you some pastries and matcha tea, because I know you love these things.

- Amazing ! Thank you ! You even remembered to get some extra sugar ! What were you reading ?"

He puts his book in the briefcase next to him after closing it and faces Suzuran to answer him :

" - Of course. And it's an old book about important remedies in medicine. "

Suzuran puts his extra sugar in his tea.

" - By the way, why were you two hours late ?

- What the hell ! I thought you didn't see the time passing… I'm sorry again. After the classes I gave, I had to organize the Bibles, the kids were super scattered today… Thank God you're here ! And also all the sugar to stay in condition…

- Have you been volunteering for classes again ? You know, I love that you can do what you love and stuff but if it's going to overwork you, I would probably shut you down.

- No, no, don't worry, I even had time for a lunch break !

- Alright… But be careful. "

They look at each other, smile and drink their tea at the same time.

" - That reminds me ! Todo called me during my break, he's planning a party this Wednesday… I mean, knowing him, it would look rather like a family meeting ! Ichibanboshi, Akira and Sakuya are definitely joining him, Bo and Gyataro don't know yet… Ah ! And Katsura is probably not coming.

- We should go there even if it ends up boring, at least we' ll get some rest.

- Yes, especially for you ! You work a lot at the hospital.

- Oh, come on, you work more than I do with all your supplementary work !"

They finish their tea (and Suzuran, his pastries) accompanied by laughter and end up leaving the lovely café.

Shyly, they slowly and hesitantly join their hands and connect them with each other.

" - We should go to the flower garden while the sunset is still visible.

- Should we ?

- We will sit on the grass in front of the lake.

- I can't wait ! The last time we went it was still cool.

- I remember it, but today it's quite hot, even too hot for me.

- That's because you look hot !

- Oh no, stop your nonsense.

- What ! It's the truth.

- Shut up.

- Never.

- I hate you.

- You're a liar, you're besotted with me. "

Arriving at the garden they talked about, they quickly found a place to settle down, facing the lake dotted with cherry blossoms where tiny ducks swim, just like the many couples walking all along the park.

The gigantic trees are beautiful and colorful, the grass is shiny and takes beautiful turns, the water is of a very transparent green and the roads made for walking are of sand.

Everything is beautiful and perfect for this couple needing a maximum of rest to continue their daily tasks, every day, without being able to see each other often.

After a long silence, Suzuran notices Sougen's hand on the green grass, and puts his on it.

Sougen turns towards him, with a blooming smile, and approaches his face towards his to deposit his lips on his.

And that's how this couple's dream day ends, this couple who look like fledgling couples but have been married for many years, a marriage nourished by their powerful love for each other.

If I had a nickel for every time I liked a red, spikey haired MC in 2022 who has one brain cell and acted compulsively, and has to be looked after by a shorter person with the brain cell, and was/is wanted by the government, and has a partner who’s main theme color was blue, and had a name ending in “-boshi”, I’d have 2 nickels.

Which isn’t a lot, but it’s actually insane that there was more than one.
