tbh i can't help but feel a bit...disappointed by the lack of queer representation and development of spock and kirk's relationship so far. don't get me wrong, i adore anson mount as pike and i'm thrilled he's getting his much-deserved time in the captain's chair. he's killing it and snw is very much his show. but as a prequel to TOS, i was really hoping we'd get more than just the tiniest glimpse into spock's queerness and his iconic bond with kirk. instead, the focus so far has been almost entirely on spock's relationships with female love interests like t'pring and chapel. which is fine, but it feels like such a missed opportunity to explore the queer subtext and history that's been part of spock's character for literal decades. this is the vulcan who inspired the entire slash fiction genre! the pointy-eared gay icon! put some respect on his name, snw writers! i'm not expecting the show to go full-blown spirk or anything, but would it kill them to include a few meaningful nods to spock's potential bisexuality and his special connection with kirk? even just *hinting* at the depth of their relationship would mean so much to queer fans who see ourselves in their journey. toss us more than a single crumb challenge. look, i know queer rep was limited in the 60s. subtext and queer-coding were often the only options. but it's 2024 now and we're in the middle of a queer renaissance across media. star trek has always been at the forefront of social progress. it's beyond time for snw to boldly go where no trek has gone before and finally make spock's queerness canon. give us bi spock, you cowards. i'm holding out hope that season 3/4 will course-correct and give spock's character the nuanced queer development he deserves. and for the love of surak, bring in kirk soon so we can *finally* see that legendary bond start to form. not to take pike’s spotlight but to actually build up what’s shown on TOS as the prequel SNW supposedly is?? anyway, thanks for coming to my ted talk. i still love snw, but i just had to get that off my chest. #makespockcanonicallyqueer2025 #letspockbespock

The Main Strange New Worlds Season 2 Villains Might Be A TOS Classic

Star Trek has always had the best villains. Throughout the franchise’s history, they’ve given us some of the most charismatic, awe-inspiring and terrifying villains in science fiction history. Everyone from the Borg, and Q to Khan himself, Star Trek villains are always ones that really end up capturing the imagination and get years of mileage within the franchise. With its recent premiere, the latest Star Trek show continues that tradition, potentially with the return of a TOS species. Strange New Worlds season 2 villains might be up there by the time this season ends. Strange New Worlds Season 2 Starts By Bringing Back Another TOS Classic Villain Speaking of bad guys, one of the main villains of The Original Series were the Klingons. Throughout the Star Trek franchise, the Klingons started as enemies but then transitioned into frenemies, antagonists, allies and even sometimes, friends of the Federation and Starfleet. Throughout its history, the Klingons have always been visually depicted in different ways. Most glaring is the type of Klingons we saw at the beginning of Star Trek: Discovery. The look varied the most from the usual Klingons audiences saw before. However, the Strange New Worlds season 2 premiere episode brought back the Klingons, resembling closer to The Next Generation iteration, than any other on-screen version. But the story of the season seemingly doesn’t focus on the Klingons. The Strange New Worlds season 2 villains get a tease at the end of the episode. Potentially. Strange New Worlds Season 2 Villains Revealed The episode starts with narration by Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) where he mentions feeling some tension from Starfleet brass. As he narrates this, we see Robert April (Adrian Holmes) and a colleague checking some star maps, with stress on their faces. After the main story of the episode finishes, we cut back to the Starfleet brass discussing the events of the episode. The episode ends on an ominous note as April implies that there is a war coming. The camera pans to the map they were stressing about before. And we get confirmation of a Gorn attack ship on its way. This seemingly confirms that the Gorn might be the main villains of this season. Which is exciting and terrifying in its own way. Why These Gorn Might Not Be The Ones From TOS The Gorn have prominently featured in Star Trek: TOS in a classic episode. A fully mature Gorn takes on Captain Kirk (William Shatner) in what is now an iconic scene from the episode titled ‘Arena’. The Gorn we see in season 1 of Strange New Worlds are young hatchlings or adolescent ones. They are a reptilian species, and the hatchlings felt more like the Raptors from Jurassic Park. Another depiction of the Gorn was in Enterprise, where they looked like an anthropomorphized dinosaur, and definitely a lot less terrifying than the hatchlings. Similar to the Klingons, both these depictions are pretty different from their first appearance where they were pretty slow and clumsy. So I’m excited to see a proper fully mature Gorn, as part of an invasion actually looks and acts. While the young Gorn seems mindless and animalistic, adult Gorn could easily be much more formidable by combining that powerful brute strength with higher intellect and abilities. If the Gorn are indeed the main Strange New Worlds season 2 villains, it should be an interesting dynamic to the more light-hearted series that we’ve come to love. A brutal and scary species of bad guys that are as capable and tactical in space battles, as they are violent and brutal individually— would be very formidable for our Enterprise crew. Astin, Winkler, Swallow, Eckstein Among 14 Additions To FAN EXPO New Orleans Celebrity Lineup

The celebrity roster at FAN EXPO New Orleans grew by a whopping 14 with today’s announcement that Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings, The Goonies), Henry Winkler (“Happy Days,” “Barry”), Emily Swallow (“The Mandalorian,” “Supernatural”), Ashley Eckstein (“Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” Her Universe founder), “The Office” standouts Kate Flanery and Leslie Baker and eight others will attend the event, January 6-8 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

Today’s lineup additions also represent a variety of TV, film, gaming and animation franchises. They include Billy West (“Futurama”), Royce Johnson (“Daredevil,” “The Punisher”), Matt Lanter and James Arnold Taylor (“Star Wars: The Clone Wars”), David Hayter (X-Men, “Metal Gear Solid”) and the “Super Mario” trio of Charles Martinet, Samantha Kelly and Kenny James.

Astin has demonstrated his innate ability to share his heart with the world through such iconic roles as “Mikey Walsh” in The Goonies, the title character of Rudy, “Samwise Gamgee” in the LOTR trilogy, and “Bob Newby” in "Stranger Things 2," roles that epitomize hope, determination and loyalty. Sean's recent feature films include the award winning thriller Adverse (2020); the family comedy Hero Mode (2021); Charming the Hearts of Men (2021); and this year’s comedy iMordecai.

Winkler first captured the nation’s attention as the leather-jacket wearing, motorcycle-riding “Arthur Fonzarelli,” a.k.a. the “Fonz” in the iconic series “Happy Days.” He has gone on to produce TV shows like “MacGyver,” direct several movies, act in plays and feature films, and author the popular Hank Zipzer children’s book series, with co-author Lin Oliver, about the adventures and misadventures of the ever resourceful, but struggling student named Hank.

With her portrayal of “The Armorer” in “The Mandalorian” in the hit Netflix series “The Mandalorian,” Swallow added another role to her growing resume. She also appeared as “Kim Fischer,” a regular on “The Mentalist” and as “Amara / The Darkness” in the 11th season of “Supernatural.” She also lent her voice to the role of “Lisa Tepes” in the animated Netflix fantasy action series “Castlevania.”

In addition to voicing “Ahsoka Tano” in numerous iterations of the “Star Wars” franchise, beginning with 2018’s “The Clone Wars,” Eckstein founded the fashion label Her Universe, dedicated to providing stylish, fashion-forward merchandise for female sci-fi fans.

The 14 newcomers to the FAN EXPO New Orleans celebrity field join a star-studded roster that already includes legendary filmmaker Sam Raimi (Spider-Man, The Evil Dead franchise); Matthew Lewis (“Neville Longbottom”) and Bonnie Wright (“Ginny Weasley”) of the Harry Potter franchise; Katee Sackhoff (“The Mandalorian,” “Battlestar Galactica”); Christina Ricci (“Addams Family,” “Wednesday”); Giancarlo Esposito (“The Mandalorian,” “Breaking Bad”); Carl Weathers (“The Mandalorian,” “Predator”); the “Stranger Things” trio of Joseph Quinn, Grace Van Dien and Eduardo Franco; Anson Mount (“Star Trek: Discovery,” “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds); and the stars of “Trailer Park Boys” Mike Smith, John Paul Tremblay and Robb Wells. The event will boast a featured lineup of celebrities, voice actors, creators, cosplayers, authors, exhibitors, compelling programming, meet and greets, special events, family zones and more.
