What to do, what to do... A recent report, titled What Do Graduates Do?, published by the Higher Education Authority (HEA) has revealed which third-level graduates from 2016 are now earning the most money.

The report notes that 18,229 (or 68% of) level 8-10 graduates for the year 2016 responded to the survey.

Strikingly, the study found that 40% of Honours Bachelor Degree graduates earn under €25k — though this is down from the 47% in the previous year's report.

The highest paid courses include Health/Welfare, Education, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Manufacturing and Construction, and Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Statistics.

According to the report, "the most common salary band for those who graduated from Health and Welfare, Education, ICT, Engineering, Manufacturing and Construction and Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Statistics is €29,000- €32,999, with 32%, 38%, 29%, 28% and 21% of graduates indicating this salary bracket."

This stacks up against courses like Arts, Social Sciences, Business/Law and Agriculture which all share €21,000-€24,999 as their most common salary band.

However, the difference is made in the upper bands. 9% of ICT graduates from 2016 are earning over €45,000. 18% from that discipline are earning between €33,000-€36,999%, compared to just 2% from Social Science.

Engineering (15%), Agriculture (15%) and Health (16%) also have several graduates earning above at least €33k in their first two years after leaving college. 93% of teachers, for example, are earning a maximum of €33k.

Smart Fleets and Smart Cities will redefine our ‘future’

The Industrial revolution followed by the IT revolution has resulted in large scale migration of people from rural to urban areas over the last few decades. The Department of Economic and Social Affairs at the UN conducted a research study that says that the global urban population in 1950 was only 30% which grew to a little over 50% in 2008. The study also predicts that by the year 2050, about 86% of the developed countries and 64% of the developing countries would have urbanized.

When you move from a village or small town to a city, you do not just expect to get a good work opportunity but also lead an overall quality life. Good education, great healthcare facilities, convenient transport system and comfortable housing are some basic requirements of any city dweller. However, all of the aforementioned are under-maintained and overtaxed and have become even unaffordable for many. These are real time concerns and the authorities needs to adopt intelligent methods in urban management to create smart solutions for its cities. The very idea of having a ‘Smart city’ encompasses the sole objective of urban development that should help alleviate many of these current problems.

A ‘smart city’ goal is achievable only when there is an active participation of both the government as well as the citizens. Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) plays an important role as it would help optimize resources, reduce costs and lead to better and efficient interaction between citizens and the service stakeholders. There are more than 2000 charging stations set up already that allows EV owners to park and charge for free. Also Ferry transport in this city is free for all commuters. Norway has dedicated 260 acres of space near Oslo airport where they plan to build a smart and sustainable city which would garner technology driven life. This new smart city would be entirely powered by renewable energy. The lighting systems in public places and buildings, waste management and traffic systems will be sensor driven. Their long-term plan is to have self-driven vehicles for mobility inside this smart city.  

 2)      Boston, USA: This was the first city to launch a concept called Innovation District at its seaport which has helped launch at least 200 start-ups in that space. One of the master plans of Boston municipality is to usher in the ‘participatory urbanism’ concept wherein every citizen can use smart apps. These apps would help them keep a track on information related to parking space as well as the exact location of their children’s school bus etc. This would also enable citizens to track a pothole on a street and report it to the municipal authorities. Boston has been famous for its traffic logs and to minimize this problem, they have introduced Digital kiosks. These kiosks will provide real time information on public transport as well as the rideshare vehicles. This concept is called Mobility microhub which will have smart sensors controlling the traffic thus preventing major congestions on roads.    

 3)      Dubai, UAE: This city has outlined a plan called Dubai-2021 that includes digitization of all government services, mobility, infrastructure, electricity and economic services. More than 90 government services are now digitized with the help of the DubaiNow app. Also, an AI driven monitoring system has helped the bus drivers to a great extent thus preventing traffic accidents.

 Smart Fleet helps cities get smarter

Smart cities are driven by Internet of Technology (IoT) infrastructure and this collates basic data of the citizens for a better connectivity. IoT will be synced with vehicle technologies which will enable safety on roads, better connectivity between service providers and citizens through mobile apps, and anyone will now be able to report issues or accidents online to the respective department.

Also data from IoT can connect vehicle to vehicle as well as vehicle with network infrastructure. This data would include every information from vehicle’s location to its fuel requirements thus helping the fleet management company take a timely action on any situation. For this week, we gon chill out in our own boxes/sanctuary! But you guys must be wondering.. why? As far as we all can remember, we will be having our hands-on quiz take 2 this week, right? Well, Saints Peter and Paul saved us! Not figuratively but literally because in our town, we celebrate the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul and fortunately, it was on the same day with our ICT class so cheers to that!

But before we get cozy in our sanctuaries, also remember when I said last blog that I was waiting for Sir PEralta to send the right codes in our JS4 hands-on quiz? Well, he must have heard me (and my classmates) wish! 

Sunday around 10:30 in the mornig, Sir Peralta sent us the right code. When I clicked it, I was like... what? Why is it built like that? I was confused! Below is the code for you to see it yourself!

Madness! I think my code is somehow near (dream on sis) from Sir Peralta’s Code. I’m just quite confused if why was the <table> in the lower part of the <tr> and <td>. I tried coding the code to experience it firsthand but my code wasn’t working! I copied it perfectly, even the variable names, and yet it is not working! Maybe I forgot to add a terminator or there was a missing bracket, I don’t know!

Also, remember when I said this “ As far as I can remember, our last activity for nested for loop was during our week 33! Or is it?” Well, my subconscious is right because we’ve been expose to nested loops before and not just in that activity! We had different for loop activities that were actually considered as nested for loop! God how dare I not recognize them at all! 

Well, no need to worry about that now since it’s all done and I got no worries anymore! JavaScript 4 is done and no more coding for the rest of the year! YES! School year 2020 - 2021 has ended! But before I celebrate this school year’s ending, I must have to worry first because of my grades! 

You all know that I had no passing scores or quizzes this 4th quarter but I am complete and an early passer when it comes to requirements so I hope that helps! Also, I passed my JS5 codes although Sir Peralta said that passing it is already optional since he already submitted our grades to the school’s office. Oh well, hope my grades won’t skyrocket downwards! I mean, if I got a score lower than 90 would b the death of me. We have passing grade in our program so pray for me!

Also, my research defense was already done and it really went well! I defended my research well and Sir Dan Soriano, our panel was so kind! So yeah, I really am happy that this school year has finally ended! It was so chaotic, a lot of ups and downs, rollercoaster ride indeed!

Nigeria’s creative industry gets a boost as CBN opens access to N533m CIFI fund

Respite is coming the way of operators in Nigeria’s creative industry as the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Monday released the Creative Industry Financing Initiative (CIFI), calling on youths into creative business to go to their bank of choice to access funds up to N533 million at 9 percent interest rate. The CIFI, which is part of efforts to boost job creation in Nigeria, particularly among the youths, was developed by the CBN in collaboration with the Bankers’ Committee. The initiative, targeted at providing funds for the creative art industry, according to the apex bank, comes in four pillars – fashion, information technology, movie, and music. “Interested applicants in the creative industry are hereby advised to submit applications to their banks for approval and disbursement,” the CBN said on its website on Monday. Through the notification seen , the lender is inviting Nigerians who have business in fashion, ICT, movie production, movie distribution, music and software engineering student to apply for loans which at a maximum of 9 percent interest per year.

“You can get a loan of up to: (a) N3 million for software engineering student; (b) N30 million for movie production business; (c) N500 million for movie distribution business; (d) cover your rental/service fees for fashion and information technology business; (e) cover your training fees, equipment fees, and rental/service fees for music business,” the apex bank said. Interested persons are to prepare their business plan or statement on how much they want for their business.
